Alfred and Bernice Vrazel Visit Czech Republic
Alfred and Bernice Vrazel, members of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts, recently returned from a tour of the Czech Republic. They enjoyed seeing all the sites in Prague as well as a boat cruise on the Vltava River. In the town of Pilsen, they visited the memorial to the American Army and General Patton Memorial Museum. In Southern Moravia, in the town of Straznice, they attended the International Folklore Festival enjoying traditional music, dance, and costumes of many different groups. Some of the other sites visited while in Moravia were the Open Air Museum in Roznov, Jelinek Distillery in Vizovice, a chateau, churches, and other points of interest. A total of 46 people were in the tour group, which was organized by Alfred and Bernice Vrazel. Other countries visited were Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and Austria.
Left to right are Dana Kubesova, Bernice Vrazel, Alena Ruzickova, and Patsy Gaines.
Many evenings included special parties and sing-alongs with the group. (Alfred always brings along his accordion!) One evening was with the Veselanka Band, which has played in Texas several times. Bernice and her sister, Patsy Gaines, visited their cousins who are from the town of Pisek. One of the highlights of the tour for Alfred was when he went to the town of Zdechov in Eastern Moravia to the house where his grandfather, Henry Vrazel, was born in 1866. Alfred’s father, Lawrence Vrazel, was born in the town of Kromeriz, also in Moravia in 1903 which Alfred visited several years ago. The family immigrated to America in 1903, and settled in the Marak, Texas, area. The trip was educational, moving, and lots of fun. —SPJST—

Adult immunization
August is National Immunization Awareness Month—the perfect time to make sure you and your loved ones are up to date on your vaccinations. Many people mistakenly believe that vaccinations are most beneficial for children; however, immunizations are just as important for adults. In fact, the Department of Health and Human Services reports that 50,000 adults die from vaccine-preventable diseases each year. Check with your health care provider today to confirm that you are up to date on the following vaccinations: • Tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis • Measles, mumps and rubella • Pneumococcal pneumonia • Influenza • Hepatitis A and B • Varicella (chickenpox)
Some people believe that immunizations aren’t safe, but the CDC cites that vaccines undergo years of testing before they can be used, making them both safe and effective. Editor’s Note: Thanks to Mary Steinman of Lodge 154, Fort Worth for

State Youth Director’s August updates
Dear Members, It is amazing how fast July 2012 has come and gone! By the time you read this newsletter, we will have celebrated the achievements of our SPJST youth at State Youth Achievement Day at the Frank W. Mayborn Center in Temple. I am very proud of the number of youth who participate in our youth program. SPJST Youth Camps have come to an end. What a great time I had with all the youth, District Youth Counselors, their assistants, youth leaders, and chaperones. I have many memories of the high ropes course and riding the inner tubes on Lake Fayette with the youth. Besides the usual activities at camp such as high ropes, archery, swimming, boating . . . each district provided their youth with other unique activities, such as teambuilding, survivor challenge, tie-dyed tee-shirts, ice cream making, and camp stories. This is what makes my job a lot of fun — having the opportunity to see how creative our District Youth Counselors and Assistant District Youth Counselors are! I applaud each of you for the time and devotion you give our youth and youth program.

Lodge 25, Ennis youth thanks Vestnik readers
Dear Extremely Awesome Organism Who is Proudly Reading This, I’ve been really busy lately (as usual), but right now instead of telling you what all I’ve done in the past few weeks, I would like to thank a few people. All the people who are out there reading this letter, I would like to thank you sssoooo much because without y’all, I probably wouldn’t be writing this right now. All the time, I have people walking up to me asking me if I am April Dvorak, and then they

Next, I would like to thank Melanie for putting up with my ridiculous grammar in my letters, and for always talking to me with a huge smile on her face and saying thanks for writing to the Vestnik. :D ^.^ OK . . . now that I’m done thanking people, I wood like to tell you about camp. That’s right, I went to SPJST camp. I had sssooo much fun. If you don’t go to camp then you don’t know what you’re missing. It’s awesome! Talking about camping, I just remembered we bought another travel trailer! We bought it just in time for

Get Acquainted with Orel Hello! My name is Orel. I am an eagle and I symbolize the ideals of the SPJST: strong, stable, clear vision, soaring spirit, dedicated, focused, determined and proud to be an American. By the way, did you know that Orel means “eagle” in Czech? SPJST has many great programs for all ages, especially families. Hope to see you at an SPJST event real soon.
What Does the Czech Seal Represent? The coat of arms pictured here is the most frequently used symbol of the Czech Republic. It can be found on all public buildings, city halls and offices. The three original lands of the Czech Crown are represented on the national seal by three different crests: a lion with two tails representing Bohemia, a red-and-white checkered eagle representing Moravia and a black eagle bearing a silver crescent representing Silesia. Color the Czech national seal below.
Answer the questions below 1. What does Orel mean in Czech?

vacation. Well, our first vacation. We went to Belton Lake! It was super epic. Misty (my favorite sista :P), my Daddy, and, of course, me—went bike riding a lot around the park. My Mommie went sometimes, but the only reason why she didn’t go bike riding was because she was at a nurses’ meeting. It was awesome! While my mommie was trapped in a boring class, the rest of us were having fun. :) :D After that was one of my most favorite things about SPJST. ~YAD~ (to be said with an epic whoosh). I had so much fun. If you wanna see what I get to bring to State YAD, you have to come. I can’t wait until State! Lodge 9, Snook Youth: Summertime of Activities
Dear Vestnik Readers, This summer has flown by, and summer will be coming to an end. Then, it’s back to school. During these summer months, I have got to enjoy all the activities SPJST has to offer. Starting with LIT Retreat in June—we had a great time at Cooper Farm meeting other members from across the state and spending time dancing,
making ice cream, blobbing, and ropes course. District One always has a great time dancing. In July, I participated in Youth Achievement Day in crafts, talent, and royalty and will go to State YAD with my pictorial arts entry. Congratulations to District One King Nikolas Faust and Queen Emily Lewis. I’d like to say thanks to J. Beaux Hruska for being my duke.

At Todd Shipyard, she met John, her future husband. He was soon inducted into the United States Army and was severely wounded in France in 1945. They were married in 1946 when the battle-injured John returned from the war. Their first two years of married life were spent in El Paso, Texas, as John received treatment for his injuries at William Beaumont Army Hospital, and they had their first child, John. With their new baby in their arms, they returned to Houston in 1948 and built their lives and family there. Mary’s primary interest in life was her husband and four sons. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She had many friends and will be greatly missed. Life for Mary was an adventure that she shared with her family and friends. Mary was a member of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, and she enjoyed fellowship with the Birthday Club Sisters and other SPJST friends, PTA leadership at Love Elementary and Hamilton Junior High Schools, teaching Cub Scouts, creating ceramic art pieces, hosting parties, baking, sewing, traveling, and playing bingo and dominoes. Well into her later years, she still enjoyed dancing, bowling, and swimming. Mary’s funeral mass was July 23 at Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Church in Katy, Texas, with Monsignor Jack M. Foreign laborers harvesting onions.
ily is interested in every report in the papers and on TV of some work offers somewhere else. My parents and I saw on TV that a Czech vegetable producing firm located about 100 miles from our domicile, hires Russian-speaking foreigners because the Czechs do not want to work for them. This made us angry, so we found the address and contacted the company on the Internet. We called Mr. Director and said that we would be interested in working for them. The Director said that we could arrive to WATCH the workers. We told him we would report in advance. Before Easter Wednesday, we announced to Mr. Director that we would come to them on Thursday. That morning we got up at 6 o’clock, dressed in the standard travel clothes and shoes, and went to the railway station. The train left around 7 o’clock. Three return train tickets cost us 442 CZK, and six tickets to the bus cost us 108 CZK, for a total cost of 550 CZK (approx. $29 U.S. dollars). Travel by car would be even more expensive because of the high price of gasoline. We got to the destination at 10 o’clock in the morning and dialed Mr. Director by a cellular telephone. He said that he would send his representative to meet us. The representative met us in a
mini-bus and took us to the field, where Russian-speaking foreign women were working. He told us that we also have to work. We were surprised enough—we thought we were to watch. We did not bring boots, gloves, or warm work clothes. Yet, we started to work gathering winter onions, shearing the roots with a knife, and removing the upper shells and dry leaves from them. Then, we bound up the onion bunches with rubber bands. We placed 30 bunches of onions in one plastic transporter. We were wet; we had heavy chunks of mud on our shoes; and our hands were dirty and cold. At the 13 hour (1 p.m.), the representative came to pick us up. He gave us one bunch of the onions, but no pay, and then he took us dirty to the bus stop. We returned home half-dead tired, but with life and health.

Ivo and his mom harvesting onions.
The representative told us that, in theory, we would earn only 15 CZK per hour like everyone else. We have got a new skill and we were outside in a fresh air, but we have had loss of money. It is clear that we would not commute daily to harvest onions. To earn more money than cost of travelling, we could live at the hostel there, such as the Russian-speaking workers do. That’s all for today. Sincerely, Ivo —SPJST—

Vinobraní dance set for September 8 at Sokol Fort Worth
Please join our members for a night of family fun celebrating 100 years of Sokol Fort Worth and 115 years of SPJST on Saturday, September 8, 2012, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Sokol Fort Worth/SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth, located at 6500 Boat Club Road in Fort Worth, Texas. Music will be by Czech and Then Some featuring polka, western, and all types of fun dances. Cost is $5 per person; ages 5 and under free of charge. Czech and Then Some is from Ennis, Texas. Earlier this year, the band received the great honor to play in Washington, D.C., at Kennedy Center. They were selected by the Czech Embassy to play for two special performances including one called, The Music of Prague. Food and cash bar will be available. Klobase sandwiches, sauerkraut, hot dogs, nachos, corn dogs, and kolaches will be served. Czech and Then Some is sponsored by SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth members Jerry and Henrietta Milan in honor of their 55th anniversary — “carrying on the Czech traditions.” Also enjoy memorabilia displays including photos, movies, museum, etc. Vinobrani literally translated means Grape Harvest Dance. Bohemia’s rich soil and mild climate were well suited fro the cultivation of grapes. Local wine industries developed. Near the end of the growing season, the farmers would contract with the vintner to sell their grapes. After an agreement was concluded, the grapes became the property of the winemaker (even though the grapes were still on the vine). Soon it became mischievous sport for the former owners of the grapes to sneak out into the fields and remove portions of the crop from the vine. The new owners of the grapes had to keep watch over their investment. To do this they employed constables to police the vineyards. The townspeople did everything they could to outwit the policemen and escaped with bunches of grapes. Every year this routine was repeated and before long it became a tradition.
Vinobraní is a reenactment of this event. The grapes and apples you will see in the Hall “will become the property of the winemaker.” The policemen will begin patrol of the property. Everyone at the dance are encouraged to join in the sport of
stealing the fruit. Some will be successful while others will be arrested by one of the policemen and taken to the judge for sentencing. All will enjoy the judge's decision. Vinobraní originates from dances dating back to the 1300s, when King
