They also have a chance to socialize with other youth club members. SPJST State YAD is the culmination of a year of hard work by some of the best and brightest SPJST youth club members. Winners of SPJST District YAD competitions across Texas qualified to compete at the state contest. Seven District YADs were held in June and July in Caldwell, Holland, Fort Worth, Rowena, Houston, Taiton, and Jourdanton. The grand finale of the 2012 State Youth Achievement Day was the pres-

Editor’s Note
VӖSTNÍK
Fe ast of Hope . . . Something brought me to a Facebook page recently that I could
not help but take note. A longtime friend started a page called “Feast of Hope.” One of its purposes is to rally local youth groups, organizations, businesses, churches, Sunday schools, or just a few people working together to volunteer to feed needy/homeless people in Temple from now through December. The requirement of this “Feed My Sheep” feeding program is to provide approximately 80 sack lunches with two sandwiches, a granola bar or snack, a piece of fruit, and a water and be available to serve between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Feeding Center in Temple. For almost the past year, the Salvation Army has been providing a hot meal and a sack lunch to-go each day for anywhere from 60 to 135 needy/homeless people in Temple. The Salvation Army Feeding Center was to begin serving just sack lunches, rather than hot meals with a sack lunch to-go. Serving just sack lunches was supposed to make it easier to get volunteers. However, the sign on the door two weeks ago read, “Closed for today and many of the days during the month. That is because there are only 12 churches that have committed to serving.” So hungry people were showing up at the Feeding Center—located just blocks from the Home Office in Downtown Temple, but yet there was no food available for them. How sad is that. The next day, I mentioned seeing this Facebook post to Ingrid Petrik
and Susan Hutton, both of Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy. Ingrid and Susan are the ladies who keep the Home Office clean and smelling great! These two ladies immediately sprang into action. They contacted Feast of Home volunteer Kaye Cathey who informed them about the project and all of the available feeding days. Ingrid then took around a letter to some of the Home Office staff members that read, “Good day, everyone. It has come to my attention that homeless people were left at closed doors when coming to get a sack lunch. I cannot close my eyes to that, and I am willing to pick more than one day to help serve so these children of God are not going hungry or thirsty in this hot weather. Actually, it does not matter - hot or cold - I need to help! Of course, I don’t have the means to do this on my own so I am asking for help in making the sack lunches. Susan and I will make the lunches and deliver them on my picked days to the homeless people, serve them, and clean up after we are finished. I just know there are more days. Right now, they are covered through Monday, and then Susan and I are serving Tuesday and Wednesday. After that, there are still many days left where there is serving desperately needed. Please, please—I am begging you to help me cover more days for these poor people in our community. We must step up and help those less fortunate, and God bless you for hearing me out!” “Thanks to the generosity of Mr. Leonard, Doni, Melanie, Cynthia,

Roy, Socorro, Karen, and Susan — along with cases of SPJST bottled water — we were able to purchase food to feed these hungry people for two days,” Ingrid said. On Tuesday, August 7 and Wednesday, August 8, the two ladies prepared and packaged 80 brown bags filled with two sandwiches, a bag of chips, and a piece of fruit each day. Then, they delivered these bags to the Feeding Center and handed them out. I had the pleasure of accompanying them. (See pictures on page 15.) As I drove up to the building, people were lined up by the door. The line of people stretched down the sidewalk and around the building. Serving began promptly at 11:30 a.m. The people receiving the lunches were very appreciative and offered “thank you’s” and “God bless you’s.” Someone donated packaged cherry and lemon pies one day so we handed those out to first come, first served. Many of the people’s eyes lit up when they saw the pies. Something so simple – something that I can run into any convenience store or grocery store and pick up one or two in a heartbeat – no big deal . . . But, yet, this one gentleman smiled so brightly when he saw the cherry pie and said he hasn’t had a cherry pie in so long that he can’t remember. He thanked us over and over. There was also a pan of bread buns, and some of the people were taking the buns and eating them right there on the spot. (This is the type of food that I occasionally throw out to animals that roam the neighborhood around my house.) It was really, really sad to see some of these people and what they have to face each day, but yet they boastfully offered us their “God bless you’s”—and really meant it. These past two days have truly opened my eyes. Small things that I take for granted each day are really large things that are cherished and appreciated by those who have nothing. Sometimes we get so caught up in our own little worlds that we forget about those who are struggling and need just a little help to get on their feet to take that step to better themselves. It is almost unimaginable to think that 966 homeless people are living in Bell County. In Texas, 80,940 homeless children have been identified. The average age of homeless is only nine years old. Families are the fastest growing group of homeless. Austin has 3,789 homeless on any given day, and Waco has a homeless population of 600. These facts were compiled by Sue Hamby, PhD, who is a member of the Center of Hope Campaign Steer-
ing Committee in Temple. Thanks to Ingrid and Susan for stepping up and feeding these homeless/needy people. Thanks also to Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point who signed up to serve on Sunday, August 26 and Sunday, September 30. If you or your lodge or youth club would like to participate in this project, please email Kaye at feastofhope@gmail.com. “Or, if someone is willing to donate bread, sandwich meat, chips, granola bars/snacks, or fruit, or funds to purchase these items, please let me know,” Ingrid says. “Susan and I will be glad to prepare the lunches and serve them. Just give me a call anytime (254) 760-5968 or email me itcp315@gmail.com. We must help these people and restore hope for them. We can and will make a difference in their lives and turn things around.” And, Feast of Hope is collecting basic need items: socks, deodorant, razors, tee-shirts, boxers, Carmax, sanitary products, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and hotel-sized shampoos, conditioners, soaps, bath gel, and lotion. The goal is to have these available to give out at the Center. It’s sad when you ask someone what their special need is, and they ask for a pair of socks or a razor (and even sadder when you don’t have it to give to them). If you have extras of these items, please share and make a difference. Winston Churchill once said, “You make a living by what you do . . . you make a life by what you give.” If any member, lodge, or youth club in the Temple area can assist with this project, please contact Ingrid, Kaye, or myself. And, if you are outside the Temple area, check out ways you can help feed the homeless in your own community. Thank you kindly.
No Vestnik Dated August 29 Please make a note that no Vestnik will be printed the week of August 29. We publish 50 issues per year, and that is one of our non-publishing weeks. So please plan ahead and get your items submitted by August 15 for the August 22 Vestnik or by August 29 for the September 5 Vestnik.

Member expresses scholarship thanks
Dear SPJST, I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for the $1,000 scholarship that I received from SPJST. I will be attending Eastfield Junior College this year. This scholarship will help me so that I can stay focused on my education. I will also be able to play baseball for the Eastfield Harvesters. Playing baseball at the college level has always been a goal of mine. SPJST has been a wonderful organization that has always been a positive influence on my life. I have been very fortunate to have great youth leaders throughout the years that I have participated in Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club. I hope to use my leadership skills from SPJST to be successful in college. Thank you, Michael Jurik Lodge 25, Ennis —SPJST—

I will be attending Blinn College in the fall and plan on transferring to a larger university later. I am pursuing a degree in nutrition to pair with my yoga teaching certification I received this summer. I have hopes of working in the range of alternative medicine. I am looking forward to achieving this dream! Thanks so much for your support towards my education. It will help me tremendously, as I will be paying for my college education. Thanks again. I sincerely appreciate your generousness! Sincerely, Bowyn Bauer Lodge 1, Fayetteville —SPJST—

Lodge 30, Taiton Donates Firepit to SPJST Education and Nature Center
Lodge 30, Taiton donated a firepit to SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm. It was constructed by Lodge 30 Fraternal Activi-
to face this disease, or anything else, alone. I’ve been fooling myself and everyone else for years, but early this year, the doctors told me I must consider candidacy for a lung transplant. This was tough! Physically, I realized how truly sick I was. Emotionally, I wrestled with emotions I didn’t want to deal with most of all - saying out loud to my family, friends and town, “I need help.” But my family and friends were right there for me. Since they couldn’t cure me, they were determined to help with the money. Before a candidate can go on the list for a transplant, a certain amount of money must be available. After that, the living and medical expenses during the six-month process can add up to $500,000. It’s almost too much to think about, but they never gave up. Saturday, June 30, the BELIEVE benefit was held at SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin. I couldn’t believe my eyes as person after person came in to support me in this fight! The hall was full, and we sold out of food! People I’ve known all my life and people I don’t even know donated items for sale and brought their checkbooks to the auction. It was awesome! When my husband and I met with the transplant team in Galveston this week, we were able to say, “We’ve got this.” Thanks to our community, we have the money required for the transplant team to continue. Now, we wait and pray. I can’t begin to name all the people and businesses who fill my heart with such happiness, but give special thanks to Meyer’s Sausage and Smokehouse, First National Bank, Frontier Bank, Manville Water Com-
pany, EHS Class of ‘93, my husband and son, my whole entire family, and my friends who worked so hard to help me BELIEVE! I started this journey with a dream to one day run the bases with my son. With my family, my friends, and my whole town and community beside me, I know anything is possible! We have an incredible community. I think I’ve always known that, but it’s an incredible feeling to know that this town is standing behind me and my little family. Thank you, Christy Joseph
It has been a month since the benefit. A match for Christy has been found in Tennessee. Five doctors flew to get the lungs so surgery had to begin on Christy at 3 a.m., and they finished by 12 noon. How wonderful that on the second day, Christy was breathing on her own and her new lungs were working good. With the help of the good Lord, we hope and pray that everything else will go the same. Floor Chairman Gene Pavelka had a good turn-in for the month with dances and rentals to the public. Bar Chairman Randy Pavelka gave his report as well. Under old business, Gene Pavelka had the water leak repaired. Thank you, Gene. Under new business, we will talk to Jason Breton about repairing the ceilings. New flooring will be installed in ladies’ and men’s restrooms and behind the bar areas. A motion was made by Janie Brewer to replace all commodes in the women’s restroom. A motion was made to give Diana Kuehl $40 to cover the cost of the meal that she so graciously prepared for us. It was so delicious, and we thank her so much. Walter Kubitza seconded the motion, and it carried. We had 10 members and five guests present. Walter Kubitza celebrated his birthday on July 16. We hope you had a great day. The meeting was adjourned, and we all enjoyed the chicken spaghetti dinner with all the trimmings. Thanks again to Diana Kuehl. Eat Sensible, Eat Seasonal, Eat Local
Are you a locavore? If you eat seasonal produce and meat sourced locally, you are. If not, below are six good reasons to “eat local,” and tips on how to do it: Seasonal, local food is fresher and tastes better. Local farms don’t need
to cultivate produce or breed livestock suitable for long-distance travel; instead, they can focus on producing the tastiest food possible. Local produce is more nutritious than food that is out of season. As soon as a fruit or vegetable is harvested, its nutrients start breaking down. The longer it takes to get to your table, the fewer nutrients it has. You get to know your farmer and where your food comes from. When
you buy local, you get the opportunity to meet the person producing your food, and confirm that you are comfortable with how they do it. Local food is often less expensive. Because transportation costs are minimal when you buy local and in- season, farmers are often able to sell their goods at reduced prices. You support local farmers. When you buy directly from local farmers, you ensure that they get a fair price for
VӖSTNÍK
their products and you stimulate your local economy. Eating local is good for the environment. When you eat food that doesn’t require a diesel-powered semi to transport it across the country, you reduce your carbon footprint.

Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Shares Summer Activities
Dear Vestnik Friends, I have been so busy this summer. It started with National Polka Festival in Ennis. My family and I rode on the SPJST Float. We had a lot of fun dancing. I saw my BFF Madison. Even Uncle Tim and Aunt Kimberly came, too, from Lewisville. Uncle Michael came to dance with us at Brave Combo. At Polka Festival, I got a halo put in my hair. It was so cool. I love my halo! I went to Sokol Slet in Dallas. I got second place in Level 3. I get to move up to Level 4. I was in the special number called Aquarius. We dressed in a tie-dyed shirt, purple shorts, and hippie glasses. We received first place. I went to Temple because my mom had a nurse convention. We stayed at Lake Belton in our RV. We got to swim in the lake. I counted 124 deer, five wild turkeys (one momma turkey and four baby turkeys), one bunny, 54
ducks, goats, one fish crane, four longhorns, squirrels, and six buffalos. Next, I had District Three Youth Achievement Day. There was no new correspondence. We worked on our skit for State Youth Achievement Day, and we discussed what happened at District Four Youth Achievement Day. We did have fun, and everyone expressed their excitement of being with the other groups in our district. Due to a conflict in dates, our lockin will be postponed until later in the fall. We were all rather disappointed, but our youth leader said we will do something exciting in its place. Before leaving, we were reminded of the upcoming State Youth Achievement Day. Everyone was encouraged to begin thinking about their Christmas tree ornaments.
Next Meeting—September 9 The next youth club meeting will be September 9 at the lodge hall at 4 p.m. This will be on Grandparents
Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club Reorganizes with Fun, Games, Activities
Dear Members, On August 5, 2012, Lodge 29, Taylor held its first youth club meeting for the 2012-2013 youth year. District Two Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky joined us and brought a few games and door prizes for us to enjoy. The kids really had a blast tossing Cheetos on the
person wearing the shower cap topped with shaving cream! We had a “magic carpet ride” and played a few other games. We watched a slideshow of camp pictures and enjoyed an ice cream party, too. The games really helped all of our youth interact and play together. I am so excited about how many youth joined us
to kick-off our youth club and am looking forward to our youth club journey together. We will hold our meetings on the first Sunday of the month at 1 p.m. at our SPJST hall in Taylor. Fraternally, Cristy Girod, Youth Leader —SPJST—

Going Back-to-School
It’s school time again! You’re probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and maybe even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around for a little while. Let’s find out more about going back to school.
The First Day Most teachers kick off the school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the stuff you’ll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over classroom rules so you’ll know what’s allowed and what’s not. Pay close attention so you’ll know if you need to raise your hand to ask a question and what the rules are about visiting the restroom. You might already know a lot of kids in your classes on the first day. But it’s a great day to make a new friend, so try to say hello to kids you know and new ones that you don’t. Make the first move and you’ll be glad you did and so will your new friend!
Moving to Middle School? Sixth grade often signals a move to middle school or junior high, where you’ll find lockers and maybe a homeroom. This is just what it sounds like
— a classroom you’ll go to each morning, kind of like your home in the school. In middle school, you might move from classroom to classroom for each subject. Your teachers know that this is a big change from elementary school and will help you adjust. Most teachers let you pick your own seat on the first day, but by the second or third morning, they’ll have mapped out a seating plan. At first, it’s a good idea to write down where your seat is in your notebook so you don’t forget.
Feeling Good on Day One Seeing friends you haven’t seen in a while can make the first day a good one. You also can make the day feel special by wearing an outfit you like. Maybe you got a great tee-shirt on vacation, or your new sneakers put a spring in your step. If you wear a uniform, you might wear a favorite watch, a new hair band, or a piece of jewelry to show your personal style. It can make you feel good to be prepared and have all the supplies you need. Some schools distribute supply lists before the year begins, so you can
Lodge 87, Temple Youth Attends First Pro Baseball Game
On July 7, 2012, I got to go to my first pro baseball game! It was so much fun. Our youth club went to watch the baseball game and to cheer the Texas Rangers on to a victory. My dad was not able to make this outing because he was working, but he told me to watch what happens when one of the Texas Rangers makes a homerun. Hamilton was the first one to make one. Man, it was amazing to see the ball fly out the field . . . the crowd goes wild. Then, all of a sudden they shoot off huge fireworks! They are awesome to see. That was the best part of the whole game! I could not wait to call my dad and tell him I got to see the fireworks. The rest of the game I could not
wait for them to make another homerun so I could see the fireworks. We sat in the all-you-can-eat section, and I made myself sick with all the food I ate. I really enjoyed the fun at the game. I loved singing the funny songs. I sat next to my mom on the end. I injured my ankle, and I was on crutches. I liked to see all the interesting facts on how baseball bats are made. Thanks, mom, for a great outing, I had so much fun. The night ended with a ride on the golf cart. Since I was injured, they took me to my car. It was so much fun. Ryan Davidson —SPJST—

come stocked up on pencils, folders, and whatever else you’ll be needing. Once you’ve covered the basics, you might tuck an extra few dollars in your backpack for an emergency (like forgetting your lunch money). Or maybe you’d like to bring along a book or magazine to read while you’re on the bus. Whatever you put in your backpack, make sure you pack it the night before. This prevents the morning panic when you can’t find your homework or lunch box. Speaking of lunch, that’s something else that can help you feel good at school — whether it’s the first day or the 100th day. Help your parents pack it the night before if you don’t like what’s on the menu at the cafeteria. Try to include a variety of foods in your packed lunch, especially fruits and vegetables. Get Oriented The first day of school is your first chance to find your way around a new school, or learn the pathways to new classes in your old school. It’s a lot to learn in one day, so don’t be surprised if you need a reminder or two. It might help to write a few notes to yourself, so you’ll remember the important stuff, like your locker combination and that lunch starts at 11:43, not 12:10. Before you know it, your fingers will fly as you open your locker and you won’t have to check your notes to know what time lunch starts!
A Bad Start? What if you hate school by the end of day one? Teachers recommend giving things some time to sort themselves out — once you know your way around the building and get adjusted to the new routine, you’ll probably feel better. If those feelings don’t fade, talk to your mom, dad, teacher, or school counselor. Here are a few final tips for a fantastic school year:
• Get enough sleep. • Eat a healthy breakfast. • Try your best. • Use good work habits, like writing down your assignments and turning in your homework on time. • Take your time with school work. If you don’t understand something, ask the teacher. • Keep a sense of humor. One teacher we know shows his new students a picture of himself graduating high school — a grinning ape in a red grad-

Save on back-to-school clothes shopping
(MS) The back to school season can be bittersweet. Parents may miss having their youngsters around the house when summer officially ends, but it’s also fun for parents to watch kids partake in all that school has to offer. One of the things few parents look forward come the end of summer vacation is back-to-school shopping. Such shopping can be costly, especially when it’s time to outfit kids with new wardrobes. While a complete wardrobe overhaul might not be necessary, kids typically need to replace a few items they’ve outgrown since the start of summer break. There are several ways parents can save on back-toschool clothes.
Get a head start. Parents can save themselves some money by shopping early for their children’s back-toschool wardrobes. Though kids may experience a growth spurt during the summer, shop for items, like socks, that they aren’t likely to grow out of before the back-to-school season begins. This affords you time to comparison shop and spread out the cost of replacing your child’s wardrobe in-

stead of being hit with one big bill all at once.
Establish a budget. Without a budget, it’s easy for parents to overspend on back-to-school clothing, especially for those parents who wait until the last minute and simply buy the first things they see. Establish a budget, ideally several weeks before your child’s first day of school. Having a budget in place reduces the likelihood that you will overspend, and developing the budget early helps you spread out your spending.
Shop at consignment stores. Consignment stores offer name-brand clothing at discounted prices, something parents of ever-growing youngsters can appreciate. Kids will like the name-brand gear, while Moms and Dads will enjoying not having to pay name-brand prices. A consignment store with significant inventory might sell anything from blue jeans and Tshirts to sneakers, shoes and jackets.
Swap clothes with other families. Clothing swaps between families have grown increasingly popular as more and more parents look to save money on rising clothing costs for their kids. Typically, families will swap clothes, including jackets, if their kids are similar in age and one youngster has outgrown his or her clothes. If you can’t find a family to swap with, visit your local community center or church to see if it has a clothing swap program.
Shop discount stores. If the local consignment store has already been raided, consider a discount store like Marshalls or TJ Maxx. These stores typically sell items at heavily discounted prices and often have similar inventories to mall department stores.
Shop online. A relatively new way for parents to save on back to school clothing is to shop online. A popular store’s Web site might offer discounts that their brick-and-mortar store does not. Parents can also scour a host of coupon Web sites to find special codes they can use at checkout. These codes might offer free shipping or a percentage off the bill when consumers spend a certain amount of money. —SPJST—

anebo předá peníze tam či onde, peníze jsou v rukou universitních úředníků a nadace má malou pravomoc ovlivňovat postup práce university. —SPJST—

“We are Chosen” Cecil E. Wondrash, Jr. shared some correspondence with us from a distant relative of his wife, Ronee Schneider, who is a DAR genealogist and said, “Finding her was a miracle because without her, I do not think I ever would have been able to complete my wife’s DAR and UDC applications. Ronee and my wife Catherine share a common ggg grandfather John Milligan II. My wife’s gg grandfather Ellis R. Milligan and Ronee’s gg grandfather Israel Milligan were brothers.” Ronee forwarded to Cecil a poem by author Della M. Cummings called “We are the Chosen,” which he states, and we thank him for sharing these remarkable words, “I agree with these words completely as this is totally what drives me to see who my relatives were and where they all came from. If I have time left in life, I want to try and compose short stories about my memories of the ones I lived with and remember and also try and find written history in books, articles, obituaries, etc. I just feel as though I owe a part of my life to each of them.” This poem encapsulates what we try to convey to every person who walks into our museum—a pride of heritage! We Are the Chosen
My feelings are in each family we are called to find the ancestors. To put flesh on their bones and make them live again. To tell the family story and to feel that somehow they know and approve. To me, doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts but, instead breathing life into all who have gone before.
We are the story tellers of the tribe. We have been called as it were by our genes. Those who have gone before cry out to us: Tell our story. So, we do. In finding them, we somehow find ourselves. How many graves have I stood before now and cried? I have lost count. How many times have I told the ancestors you have a wonderful family, you would be proud of us?
How many times have I walked up to a grave and felt somehow there was love there for me? I cannot say.
VӖSTNÍK
It goes beyond just documenting facts. It goes to who I am and why I do the things I do. It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be lost forever to weeds and indifference and saying I can’t let this happen. The bones here are bones of my bone and flesh of my flesh.
It goes to doing something about it. It goes to pride in what our ancestors were able to accomplish. How they contributed to what we are today. It goes to respecting their hardships and losses, their never giving in or giving up. Their resoluteness to go on and build a life for their family. It goes to deep pride that they fought to make and keep us a Nation. It goes to a deep and immense understanding that they were doing it for us. That, we might be born who we are. That, we might remember them. So we do. With love and caring and scribing each fact of their existence, because we are them and they are us. So, as a scribe called, I tell the story of my family. It is up to that one called in the next generation, to answer the call and take their place in the long line of family storytellers. That is why I do my family genealogy. And that is what calls those young and old to step up and put flesh on the bones.
—Della M. Cumming ca 1943.

Sts. Cyril and Methodius Slavic Heritage Festival, Sept. 30 in Houston
The 49th Annual Saints Cyril and Methodius Slavic Heritage Festival will be held Sunday, September 30, 2012, at Knights of Columbus Hall, located at 607 East Whitney in Houston, sponsored by local Croatian, Czech, Polish, and Ukrainian cultural groups. The cultural groups and public will begin the day at 10 a.m. with celebration of a Catholic Mass with readings and hymns in each of the different Slavic languages. The festival will begin at 12 noon with a parade of participants in traditional costumes. Traditional foods will be offered by each of the cultural groups, and each group will display traditional arts and crafts from their regions. Entertainment provided by Croatian, Czech, Polish, and Ukrainian singers and dancers showcases the heritage preserved by these cultural groups. Festival-goers can dance to the music of Czech And Then Some, with a repertoire that includes polkas, waltzes, and country music. The group

performs at many state and national venues, including a performance in March 2012 at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. A variety of vendors offer jewelry, arts, and crafts for purchase. The Slavic Heritage Festival is one of the oldest ethnic festivals in Houston. It was first held in 1963 to celebrate the work of Saints Cyril and Methodius, two Greek brothers who brought Christianity to the Slavic tribes in the ninth century. The late Bishop John L. Morkovsky, Bishop of the Diocese of Galveston-Houston, worked with Reverend Dmytro Blazejovskyj, Pastor of Pokrova Ukrainian Catholic Church, and with Maurice Hafernik, a Houstonian of Czech descent, to organize the celebration.
