Henrietta Zavodny Slavik Celebrates 100th Birthday

Henrietta Slavik celebrated her 100th birthday with a noon luncheon on Saturday, June 16, 2012, at Ratibor Country Grill in Ratibor, Texas.

Henrietta displays a certificate that she received from Texas Governor Rick Perry recognizing her 100th birthday.

Henrietta Zavodny Slavik was born on June 16, 1912, in the Meeks Community of Bell County. Her parents were Joseph Zavodny and Lydia Bartos Zavodny. Her father Joseph Zavodny emigrated from Valasska Polanka in Moravia with his parents and siblings in 1896. Her mother was born in Texas, but her grandmother Marie Sembera Bartos emigrated with her parents from Dolní Heřmanice about 1879. Henrietta attended Cyclone School. Her siblings are Alfred (deceased),

Jerry Zavodny (deceased), Lillian Mikulec, August Joe Lee (deceased), Leon Zavodny, and Milton Zavodny. On September 24, 1935, she married Frank Slavik of the Marak community in Milam County. They married in St. Cyril and Methodius Church in Marak and moved to a farm in Milam County. When her husband died in 1973, Henrietta continued to live on the farm and managed it. Their four children are Henrietta (Retta) and husband Charles Chandler, Frank Slavik and wife Gwynn, Lydia (deceased), and Thomas Slavik and wife Betty. She has seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Henrietta is a member of SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone. She joined SPJST in 1974. “I remember riding a buggy to church as a little girl,” Henrietta says. “I also remember the first car, getting electricity, running water, studying by the light of a kerosene lamp, and getting radio and TV.” She adds, “The washer and dryer were the best things that happened to me.” In addition to the duties that are demanded in raising four children and maintaining a farm with chickens, cows, guineas, turkeys, cats, and dogs, Henrietta’s interests as long as she was able were gardening, canning, baking (especially angel food cakes from fresh eggs), sewing, quilting, and assembling various craft items. Each year, she ordered some new plants or trees from the seed catalog and watched them grow, bear fruit, or bloom beautiful

Orel Hearts SPJST! *

Hello! My name is Orel. I am the mascot for SPJST. I am an eagle, and I symbolize the ideals of the SPJST fraternal benefit society: strong, stable, clear vision, soaring spirit, dedicated, focused, determined, and proud to be an American. And, my name—Orel— means “eagle” in Czech. How grand is that! For the past year, I have been flying everywhere. I flew north, south, east, and west—all across this great, beautiful land of the free and home of the brave. I searched far and wide looking for the best organization for both adults and youth. And, I found it . . . right in my home state of Texas. I am one lucky Orel to be part of SPJST—an organization that truly hearts* and cares about its members and offers lots of benefits! (* loves) Plus, new and exciting things are happening in and around the SPJST Home Office . . . and I can’t wait to share the news with you! I flew by SPJST State Youth Achievement Day and dropped off a handful of Orel Bucks to give to anyone and everyone who “likes” our SPJST Facebook page. All of the Bucks were given away, and our Facebook fans went from 569 all the way to 617! That’s terrific! Fun is planned for the Facebook page so “like” it and watch for ways to win Orel Bucks! By the way, you can buy neat and awesome items in The SPJST Store with these Orel Bucks. I overheard that an updated catalog of items is in the works, too! Hopefully, this catalog will feature some miniature me’s! Something Epic . . . State Royalt y Begins Reign

Congratulations to State King Jerry Pechal, State Queen Emily

Lewis, State Duke Michael Hoelscher, and State Duchess Kyleigh Hruska! They were crowned on August 4 and will travel the state representing SPJST throughout the next year. King Jerry is from Lodge 47, Seaton. It has been 22 years since Lodge 47 has had a State King! And, another interesting fact is that Jerry is the grandson of the late SPJST Museum Curator Dorothy Pechal. Queen Emily is from Lodge 9, Snook. It has been 25 years since Lodge 9 has had a State Queen. And, in 1987, when Melissa Victorick was crowned State Queen, her duchess was Rebekah See (now Rebekah Hruska), mother of current State Duchess Kyleigh. Plus, Emily is the sister to 2011 State King Robert. We have had two or more siblings win the state crowns before, but I do not believe that we have ever had two siblings win back-toback. So history has been made! Congratulations and best wishes to these youth! Their first appearance is on Saturday, September 1 where they will ride in the Westfest parade and participate in the festival on Saturday. If you are planning to be at Westfest in West, Texas, be sure to come up and meet the new State Royalty.

Readers Write

Touched by story

I read the Vestnik this morning and was really touched by your story on feeding the hungry. We all need to (unfortunately) be reminded of our blessings and how we need to help others. We have Christ’s Kitchen here in Victoria, and they do a tremendous job each day. Your article reminded me that I need to send cookies their way again. Thanks again for all you do for SPJST and others. Thanks, Annie Vahalik Lodge 4, Hallettsville —SPJST—

Scholarship recipient extends gratitude

Brian Vanicek, Thank you very much for the $1,000 scholarship. It is greatly appreciated. This money will help me a lot in this coming year. I am attending McLennan Community College. Thank you again for your generous award and support. Sincerely, Brittany Chupik Lodge 54, West —SPJST—

Don’t Sell Yourself Short

We all have seen the commercials; help sponsor a starving child for less than $1 a day. How can you not find $1 to help keep a child from starving. I use to buy three iced teas a day at $1.89 each. If I cut down one and add 11 cents, I can feed two kids. That was easy. Had they taken the approach for only $31 a month, or $365 a year, I would never be able to afford that. I have too many other bills to worry about. Insurance agents in general would rather sell less insurance than to change your prospective. It’s not that you can’t afford it, the agent just finds it easier to sell less. That is why 56 percent of all Americans are under-insured. It is not the agent’s job to sell insurance. He or she is responsible to insure your family does not invoke hardship when someone passes away. Underselling may seem like a solution today (“something is better than nothing” syndrome), but it could be doing you more harm than help. How many times do we hear in the news a fund being set up to help some family be-

cause they couldn’t afford the cost of the funeral? Many of them actually have insurance but didn’t get enough. More importantly, that family is not just collecting money. They are sitting with the funeral director deciding what to leave out. Nobody needs that stress during the worse time of their lives. When you put things in prospective, you would be surprised how easy it really is to find the right solution. It is as simple as changing habits. For example, a $50 per month premium is $1.67 a day. That could be one Starbucks or even a regular coffee anywhere. Maybe you go out to eat once a week. That could be once every other week. It may be that one fast food stop every day, or maybe that drink after work. It could be only buying the paper every other day or maybe the extra snacks when you go grocery shopping. A $30 premium is less than $1 a day. We all waste over $1 a day. It is really all about prospective and exchanging habits for something better. A $50,000 Universal Life on a child that will be well-funded and help build a college fund, is less than 90 cents per day. A $100,000 whole life policy on a teenager is a little over 80 cents per day.

True Story As I mention earlier, I used to drink three iced teas a day. I bought a $100,000 Universal Life with an increasing death benefit and funded it on the high end, for my one-year-old granddaughter. To save that $50 per month ($1.67 per day), I now take one tea with me at the start of the day and buy one $1 large tea at McDonald’s in the afternoon (they are everywhere). She now has a $100,000 life insurance policy with increasing death benefit (in case she becomes uninsurable before she buys more), a well-funded college savings plan ($13,000 if the economy crashes today and never recovers and over $20,000 if it continues to grow), and it has not affected my budget one penny. Before you ask your agent about a $5,000 policy, ask him or her what else is available. Let grandma or grandpa buy the $5,000 policy on the baby, and you start them off right with another policy. It really is about exchanging habits for something better. Remember, if you sell yourself short, nobody will know until they are in the time of their biggest need . . . then, it’s too late. She loved cutting out quilt patterns from old dresses, shirts, woolen pants and woolen jackets, coordinating the colors, and sewing the pieces together for a quilt top. She stayed busy working on some project at all times. Henrietta continues her enthusiasm and good attitude by reading the Vestnik, the Cameron Herald, the Temple Daily Telegram, and several magazines, working puzzles, and playing bingo. She keeps up with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and knows exactly where they are and what they are doing. She encourages them and tells them how proud she is of all of them. —SPJST—

Lodge 24, Cyclone youth: thanks, Mrs. Ruth, Lodge 25, Ennis from Tamryn Youth Club I am writing this letter for my little participates in sister, Tamryn. My family and I got to Project PB&J enjoy the C o r p u s Christi Getaway Weekend again this year. We had a blast! On Saturday night, it was western night. I didn’t dress up, but Mrs. Ruth Hanusch did, and she came in with a pink unicorn stick horse that my little sister really liked. Mrs. Ruth won Wild West Queen! Congrats to her! After visiting with her, Mrs. Ruth gave my little sister the pink unicorn, and she was really happy. It even makes noise. I only got hit in the head with the stick part on the way home about 10 times. Thank you, Mrs. Ruth, from Tamryn Stock! Your friend, Ty Stock —SPJST—

SPJST State King’s Notebook By 2012-2012 State King Jerry Pechal District Two • Lodge 47, Seaton

Dear Vestnik Readers, Wow—What a year it has been in SPJST! I have enjoyed and loved everything SPJST has offered to me this past year . . . starting from winning king in my district and going to state and getting first runner-up and all of the parades, events, YADs, and camp! After I won District Two King for the second year, I felt blessed. So then it was going on to state and having a load of butterflies when you walk on stage for the first question. After it was all over and time for the results, my heart started pounding. When my name was announced as State King, it felt like it really didn’t happen. But, after I saw my family crying and them saying that I did it, it then felt real. I want to say that I have the best District Youth Counselor in the world because if it was not for her, I would not be State King. So thank you, Patsy, for giving that extra push to run for king. Melanie and David, I look forward to spending this year with y’all and getting to ride on the wonderful floats! To District Two Queen Julia Zavodny—wow—you blew me away at district and state! This being the first time for you to run for queen, winning district and second runner-up at state—that is amazing. This will be a fun and wonderful year! I commend you for winning queen and wish you luck in the years to come. To State Queen Emily Lewis, first, congratulations on winning state! I look forward to getting to know you more and riding in the parades with you. This will be an amazing year, and I will see you soon on Saturday, September 1 at Westfest! Last, but not least, thank you to my youth leader, Lynette Talasek, for believing in me that I can do it. Also, thank you for taking some time and listening to my speech when I asked. It meant a lot. Well, I know school is about to start, and summer is coming to a close. I hope that every one will start off right and have a wonderful year. Whenever you need help with some problems, remember God is always right there next to you! I am glad to say that I am the SPJST State King for 2012-2013! 2012-2013 State King signing off, Jerry Pechal —SPJST—

Lodge 186 Caldwell Youth Club reports on August meeting

The August meeting was brought to order by President Shelbi Ramon at 2:40 p.m. Shelby-Lynn Rose led the Pledge of Allegiance and SPJST motto. With nine youth and five adults attending, we discussed old business— camp at Cooper Farm. Everybody had a very good time being with the youth from the other lodges. Youth Achievement Day (YAD)—everybody entered and won something along the way, even though no one advanced to State. At the end of the summer pool party, everybody enjoyed a cool dip in the water to get out of the hot weather. New business is Grandparents Day on September 9. We will have our regular meeting at 2:30 p.m. then have a potluck meal for them at 5:30 p.m. Sincerely Elias Rose, Reporter —SPJST—

Lodge 186 Caldwell youth: fun at Schlitterbahn

I had a fun time at Schlitterbahn. They have a new water ride called the Falls. You go through really rough rapids and up this conveyer belt then they go down the other side to the rapids, and you go really fast. After that, I went to the lazy river where it was slow. Sincerely Elias Rose —SPJST—

Lodge 87, Temple Youth: YAD is “Family Time” Opportunity

On July 14, 2012, all of District Two youth gathered at Lodge 80, Holland to participate in Youth Achievement Day. Lodge 87, Temple Youth Club was very excited about YAD this year. We had a lot of craft projects entered and one individual talent this year. We also entered in our youth club’s scrapbook and poster.

It was a lot of fun to play with all of our friends . . . and compete. The best part about YAD is hearing the winners announced. It does not hurt to have our lodge called out either! We did not win much, but what we did win, we were very proud of! We worked hard all year long . . . well, some of us did . . . but the ones who worked a few weeks worked

hard, too. I had a lot of fun singing, too. I am happy this year is over, and we are already plotting next year’s projects. Thanks to Patsy, Donna, and Lynette for all your hard work! It really showed this year at YAD—one of the best years so far. Ryan Davidson, Reporter —SPJST—

Lodge 87, Temple Youth Club Participates in District Two YAD

Lodge 87, Temple Youth Club: July Meeting Scenes

On July 10, 2012, Lodge 87, Temple Youth Club members all met at the lodge hall. We had a meal with the mother lodge. We went over the upcoming Youth Achievement Day events. Everyone had a lot of fun. We can’t wait until YAD, and we get to compete with all of our craft projects. We finished up the scrapbook and poster! Our youth leader Jennifer David-

son also went over items for camp. She reminded parents where to find the camp list. We are all very excited about camp. The next meeting will be August 5 at our lodge. Good luck all Lodge 87 YAD participants! Ryan Davidson Reporter —SPJST—

On July 14, we had Youth Achievement Day for District Two. I look forward to this day all year long. At the beginning of each year, I figure out what I want to do for my projects. Then, my mom and dad help me figure out how to do my projects. To me, this is the best thing about YAD. It’s not about winning (although that’s a definite plus); it’s about spending time with my parents. My dad cloned this as “family time.” We laugh and play around, and it usually takes us double—if not triple—the time to get my projects done, but it’s done ‘Davidson-style!’ This year, my dad got to go to

23

YAD. In the past, he has had to work. I really enjoyed singing for my individual talent. The best thing about YAD was hearing my name called out for either first, second, or third place! I do have a project that’s going to State YAD! I’m looking forward to that already. After District Two YAD, my parents and I went out to eat at Backyard BBQ in Morgan’s Point. When we pulled up, there were a few deer out and I got to watch them for a while. It was an awesome way to end YAD to me. I love my “family time!” Ryan Davidson —SPJST—

The Kolache Bake Show has grown into a statewide contest with five divisions that draw contestants from all over the state of Texas. Each division has 11 classes of kolache based on the filling used. So you want to visit the Czech Republic?

If you want to visit the land of your roots, and after you do this, you will wonder what took you so long! Your first decision to be made after flying, of course, is the mode of travel after you get there. Decide if you want to use public transportation or rental car. If it is by car, don’t be afraid, for if you have driven the freeways here, you will have no problem. My wife and I have been traveling to Europe since 1981, visiting most of the countries there. We have always driven by automobile enjoying traveling to out of the way sites, getting often lost, but always seeing something new and different. We have taken the train several times, but the problem with public transportation is with baggage, and you usually wind up in a central point and have to take a taxi to someplace you have booked previously. So this method obviously takes plenty of advance planning, which you can do from home. As a result, in our travels, we preferred to rent a car (we now have a home in south Moravia and leave a car there), plan our destination, and proceed without knowledge where to stay. Fortunately, there are plenty of hotels, guest houses and private homes you can stay in. You can have multiple destinations in Europe and motor to the Czech Republic; however, if you would like to start in Prague, plan your flight there.

If you are computer literate, visit Travelocity or any one of the travel booking sites. Put in your date to fly and return and check out the different airlines. We prefer Frankfurt, Amsterdam, or London and avoid Air France to Paris, not because we don’t love Paris, just because the airport is so huge. Your choice of hotels is endless, and if you want to stay several days— as we did recently—and wish to have an economical, clean hotel right on a Metro station, google “Hotel Brno Prague.” We stayed with our daughter there for about half or a third of the price of a four-star, for example, right on the Metro which we used to travel all over Prague to the popular destinations. The hotel has a limousine service on-call, quite reasonable for out of the way destinations which they can arrange. Arrange for your transportation from airport to whichever hotel you find. At the Metro Station, find a route map, book a ticket from the machine, trip or all day, etc. and start exploring. Avoid crowded street cars or Metro trains especially boarding where that is a favorite spot for pickpockets jamming you up on boarding where they work in teams. Buy a belly pack to put your money, passport, and credit cards in. Try to avoid heavy travel times, if possible. When in a Metro station platform waiting for your train, take a car at the end of the train which might be less crowded. If you intend to visit destinations out of Prague, we recommend renting a car in the United States to be ready there (plan ahead for it would be more economical)—preferably automatic not stick shift, although that is all I drive there. Purchase a GPS if you don’t have one and load the Europe maps on it, a Czech road atlas, learn the driving rules, and take a small dictionary. Then, strike out and don’t worry about a place to stay. If you speak some Czech, you can always ask locals about places to stay. If you don’t, look for signs that say “Zimmer Frei” (We know that’s German, but the Czechs use it) or Volny Pokoj. The driver should avoid any alcoholic beverages as there is zero tolerance there for the driver. Strictly abide by speed limits which are posted in kilometers/hour. Distance signs in kilometers; a trick is to multiple times 0.6 to think in miles per hour. Don’t worry about changing money in the United States. Take your credit cards and dollars with you to change at posted change places. If you insist on taking trav-

eler’s checks, you will have to go to the bank and show your passport. Spot change places that advertise no commission. Any bank will change also, but it usually takes more time to do so. Look in the newspaper before you leave for the number of Koruna per dollar so you have an idea. Prices displayed there are in Crowns or Koruna. If you see something for 100 kcs, we round it off by multiplying times 5 in our head to 100 kcs would be about $5. Your hotel room that says 1000 crowns would be $50. (This is based on about 17 kcs to one dollar.) But check the change rate and figure your shortcut. At the Hotel Brno, breakfast was included, and it was a good one. Prices are higher in Prague than they would be out on the road. Look for a Hospoda (Pub) for light lunch and refreshments, but here again, if you are driving, avoid the alcohol! You do not need to get an international driver’s license. No one has ever questioned my Texas license when stopped, as they sometimes do at road checks, mostly for automobile safety checks. Don’t pass up on home stays or B&Bs as a base of operation. They are a lot more fun and more economical than a hotel. You will probably leave in the afternoon sometime to arrive at your transfer point around 7 or 8 a.m. to take a connecting flight to Prague. Check your layover times, and try to get them at least two hours or so. These are big airports, and your first flight will probably gate at one end of the terminal and connect a long way in another terminal. (It seems the airlines do that in spite!) Connecting flights of less than an hour will be a task to get to the departing flight. So you leave one day and arrive the next day in the morning. We prefer the foreign carriers (KLM, Lufthansa, etc.) as they give you all the wine and beer included whereas the domestic carriers are not that free with the libations. You can check one bag up to 40 pounds and take a carry on. Check with the carrier for weight limits. Extra bag checks will cost, as will extra weight. When you go, check the temperature over there for sure; take your meds, etc. Have fun. Good luck. Have a safe trip. Let us know how you did. Miss Czech Slovak US 2011 shares year of activities

In August 2011, Christy Dowling was crowned Miss Czech Slovak US. She was also presented the Grand Talent and Oratory awards. This marked the first time in the pageant’s history that a representative from Kansas was awarded the national crown. Her involvement in the Czech heritage stems far back into her childhood. Her maternal grandparents and both of her parents are from Wilson, and her grandparents still live there today. She has been attending Czech festivals in Wilson for as long as she can remember and grew up watching the Kansas Czech Queen Pageants. At the age of 10, she was crowned Miss Bohemian Belle Princess at the inaugural Miss Czech Slovak Princess Pageant. In 2008, she was crowned the Kansas Czech Queen. She went on to compete in nationals the following summer, where she won the Grand Talent and Americanized Kroj awards. In 2010, she was once again honored as the Kansas Czech Slovak Queen. In her Spring 2011 semester of college, she moved to Brno, Czech Republic, for her education.

While there, she studied Czech grammar and vocabulary, Central European History, and Modern Czech Theatre. She was able to travel all over the country, and even found the original church her great-great-greatgrandparents were married in. For the last couple of years, she has been a

member of the Partner City Committee in Manhattan, Kansas. The group stems from an agreement between Manhattan and the city of Dobrichovice in the Czech Republic. Fundraising was completed in the fall for a flag plaza in the city park to commemorate the relationship. While in the Czech Republic, Christy acted as a liaison for the committee, meeting with the City Council for Dobrichovice and receiving the official flags to be used for the plaza. Last summer, she represented Kansas in Wilber, Nebraska, and brought home the national title. It is also noteworthy that Christine’s sister Catherine competed in the 2005 pageant, winning both the oratory and talent phases of the competition, and finished as the first runner-up. This marks the first time two sisters have both won two of the top awards in the competition, and the first time sisters have each finished in the Queen’s court in their respective pageants. Throughout her reign, she has travelled many miles to attend festivals and Czech events. Since her coronation last August, Christy has travelled to many festivals in Kansas, including Wilson, Munden, Cuba, and Blue Rapids, as well as events in Oklahoma, Florida, and Nebraska. Christy has also met with Czech Ambassador Petr Gandalovic, Slovak Ambassador Peter Burian, Kansas Governor Sam Brownback and several honorary

Consuls to the Czech and Slovak Republics. This summer, she returned to the Czech Republic and Slovakia for several weeks. She presented a paper about the Miss Czech Slovak US Pageant at the Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences World Congress in Zilina, Slovakia, in July. From there, she visited many different places in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and once again represented Manhattan in Dobrichovice with the city council. Christy is a senior at Kansas State University. She will graduate in December with a degree in biology and pre-dentistry and a minor in business, and will begin dental school in the fall of 2013. Throughout college, Christy has been very active in many organizations. She has served as an ambassador for the College of Arts and Sciences, co-president of the K-State Pre-Dental Club, a member of the

Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, Greek Honor Society, and National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Christy sings in the choir and acts as a student ambassador at St. Isidore’s Catholic Student Center. It was from the student center that she became involved in volunteering to visit the nursing homes and hospitals in Manhattan. At K-State, she works with the Czech exchange students, helping them to adjust to their new surroundings in the United States. She works to promote the heritage through many outlets at the University, and can be seen promoting study abroad in a video on their homepage within the Kansas State University webpage. She feels very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to represent her heritage around the country and across the world, and will continue to do so even
