Lodge 15, Buckholts Member Paints Komensky School Play Actors
From the moment an envelope was placed upon a Temple city secretary’s desk, the forgotten story of a rural Czech school started to unfold. Inside the envelope was a photograph of 13 people dressed in the style of the Old West, and at the top of the photo was written the words, “Komensky School 1919.” Newspaper clippings for two plays were included, one written in Czech and the other entitled The Texas Ranger. Thanks to the kindness and foresight of a Corpus Christi resident, Bob McKinley, a slice of Czech history has been re-revealed. He found this photograph and the newspaper clippings in an old trunk that had belonged to his mother Julia Huckabee McKinley. As a young woman, Miss Huckabee taught at Komensky School which had been located within East Bell County bordering Little Flock, Lost Prairie,

of 1937, the school taught 38 children ranging in age from six to 17. “Komensky” was a common Czech name, the most well-known belonging
to Jan Amos Komensky who was a Czech-Moravian teacher and bishop. The first illustrated textbooks are attributed to him as is the extending of comprehensive education to both males and females. The Czech families within the Komensky School’s jurisdiction were both strong supporters of their homeland as well dedicated patriots to their new country, the United States. Komensky School, for example, reported 100 percent participation in support of the Red Cross. During the time this photo was taken, World War I had only recently ended, and the world was facing a new and very different enemy: the influenza pandemic of 1919. In the spring of 1919, Miss Julia Huckabee presented The Texas

Hands On Czech-Tex
Last week, the Vestnik office was forwarded information from the
Supreme Lodge President’s office about an exciting Czech program that will be offered to more than 2,000 third and fourth grade students in Temple and Belton. And, Hands On CzechTex needs volunteers who are interested in sharing their Czech heritage. Hands On Czech-Tex was created to honor the Czech immigrants who came to Texas in the 1800s. An introductory video created by Byron Loveloace will be followed by participation in a Czech fairytale called “Salt is Sweeter than Gold,” dancing a polka, creating a pysanka, and learning about several artists. The program is sponsored by the Contemporaries, a group that provides funding for the Temple Cultural Activities Center (CAC) in support of performing and visual arts with a major focus on opportunities for children to participate in activities that will stimulate a lifelong interest in the arts. All third and fourth grade students are invited to participate in original programs developed by the Contemporary members. Coming
on Thursdays or Fridays in late September and October, classes will participate through rotation in theatre, movement, visual art, and gallery. The Czech Heritage Museum is sharing its exhibits which will be used during the gallery presentation and will be on view at the CAC. The workers at the museum have been extremely helpful in sharing information and keeping the program on the right track. Volunteers interested in sharing their Czech heritage are encouraged to participate by calling Sharon at (254) 702-0979 or sending an email to dougbs@vvm.com.

Motivational Sales Message
Prepare Logically - Adapt Needfully
“Selling is a business of dips, dives, diversions, changes, adaptations, and rolling with the punches. If we know that, why not make these detours work for us instead of destroying our energy?” —Burt Meisel, CLU
This week’s motivational message is about preparing logically; adapting needfully. Sales agents must acquire these traits in order to be successful. Thanks to Jack and Garry Kinder of Kinder Brothers International (www.kinderbrothers.com) for this message:
Study the word PLAN. To us, it’s always meant: Prepare Logically — Adapt Needfully. In other words, make thoughtful, definite plans. Then, adapt and modify those plans as the situation might require. Great salespeople, like effective performers in all walks of life, are those who are organized, flexible, and
adaptable. They size up situations and, when the occasion demands, they quickly, effectively and confidently alter their original course and go to “Plan B.” In the Navy, this kind of adaptability is referred to as “changing the course.” In the Boy Scout training, it’s called “improvising.” In football, it’s “calling an audible.” In selling, it’s adapting the prepared agenda to meet the need. In other words, the situation is the boss. In every sales encounter, you must learn to adjust and adapt. When the prospect starts making objections and offering resistance, “call an audible” — adjust and adapt. Display flexibility. Move ahead to achieve your goal — another satisfied customer. Remember that in order to be able to adapt needfully, you must be prepared. Ad-libs are for amateurs. Preparation will give you the confidence to adapt, should the situation require it. —Jack and Garry Kinder —SPJST—

Komensky School
Continued from Page 1.
Ranger as a fundraiser “for the benefit of the war sufferers in Bohemia.” The play was a huge success. The photograph sent to the Temple City Mayor Bob McKinley depicts the cast of this very play posed in their costumes. Due to the popularity of the premiere performance, the play was performed again at Seaton Hall. It was entitled Kiejce Nitka and was well-received by a sizeable Czech-speaking audience. By 1937, attendance at the Komensky School was decreasing as students transferred into other districts. Komensky merged with the Seaton
district, and these two ultimately combined with Rogers ISD. A cultivated field is all that remains of the little schoolhouse which left a memorable mark not only on Central Texas history, but on the patchwork history of a respected and honorable people: the universal Czech culture. Class actors in Komensky School’s 1919 play The Texas Rangers are, front on floor in the painting, Walter “Ladis” Kamas. Lodge 30, Taiton Honors Michael and Kathy Ahlstrom with Reception Monday, August 20, 2012 • Taiton Community Center in Taiton, Texas
Dear Vestnik Readers, On August 20, 2012, Lodge 30, Taiton wished a fond bon voyage to a wonderful couple. Michael and Kathy Ahlstrom were not just any members of District Six; they were very important members and not because of the title “Director.” Some people may describe Mike as the district director, but he was so much more—not only to our lodge, but to all of District Six. He was a presence throughout the year at every turn. He believed in SPJST as a service organization, and he was always willing to give his all. And, when you saw Mike, most often right
beside him was Kathy. If given a title she would have to have been called “Deputy Director.” They will be missed very much in the general everyday activities, but we wish them well in their new endeavours. They plan to spend much time traveling, enjoying family, and most likely spreading that famed SPJST fraternalism around. The evening began with a toast to the couple given by the officers of Lodge 30. A meal of lasagna, salad, and bread was enjoyed with a few words of thanks for their time given to our lodge and district. They were reminded that while they have
retired, they are no way released from being a part of our lives, and we will expect to see them often. For dessert, a cake decorated with the SPJST logo and “Thanks for the Memories, Mike and Kathy” inscribed on the top was enjoyed. The evening ended with much reminiscing from years past. Thank you again, Michael and Kathy. You will never be forgotten. Fraternally yours, Marjorie Treumer Reporter —SPJST—

Lodge 15 Buckholts welcomes guests
SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts meeting was called to order at 5 p.m. by President Doug Williams. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by one of our guests Martha Daniel, and followed by a moment of silence in memory of our departed members. All officers were present. We were so pleased to have as guests Martha Daniel, Carla Williams, and Regina Peevey. President Williams welcomed everyone and thanked them for attending. The secretary and treasurer each gave their reports which were approved as read. Several members from our lodge attended the District Two Fall Meeting at Lodge 47, Seaton. We enjoyed it. It was very nice and well planned. Everyone enjoyed the games. We were lucky and got to bring home several goodies from the cake walk. The barbecue chicken dinner was very good. It was Grandparents Day, and Lodge 15 member Frank Tomascik won the award for being the oldest grandparent at the age of 91. In old business, we want to thank Joe and Janet Rozner for the extra donation they gave us on their recent rental. We appreciated it so much. In new business, we are in need of someone to sell SPJST insurance for our lodge. If you are interested or know of someone who might be interested, please call the SPJST Home Office in Temple. They are developing Apache Pass near Cameron as a tourist attraction. The Historical Society thinks in the near future, we will be getting tour buses visiting our area to view all the historical sites which will include our lodge building. The roof on the lodge building leaks and badly needs repair. We decided we cannot wait on the Restoration Project to replace it. We must get some repairs on it presently so Sandie Fischer made the motion that we get bids for the repair, seconded by A.W. Zajicek. Motion carried. We had a nice surprise at the meeting. Lodge member Lamerle Zajicek brought her oil painting of the old Komensky School in the year 1919. The students in the painting are in their costumes that they wore when they presented the play The Texas Ranger as a fundraiser to benefit the war sufferers in Bohemia. The play was per-

A Writer’s Life By d.knape Lodge 187, Round Rock
A writer’s life is lived with pen as words arise inside of him they multiply time and again words represent the world to him
A writer lives only to write to share a moment of insight he hopes to see to set it right before it passes into night
Tides of thoughts come and go he records them writely so what’s written lives lets others know poetry opens like a rose
A writer’s life is lonely and a little different from most men in a way it’s all pretend yet the writer’s story never ends. —SPJST—

SPJST supporters make the CCMH gala a roaring, rollicking success
On August 25, 2012, more than 200 guests enjoyed the entertainment by the Bay City Coastalaires, an open wine bar reception, and delicious hors d’oeuvres in Brno Gallery then moving up to Prague Hall Ballroom for a sumptuous, seated plated dinner by Ral’s Fine Catering. Spirited bidding at the silent and live auctions and two drawings—one for 220,000 air miles for a Prague trip and a Kamil Kubik painting—which along with lively conversation, completed the evening for guests reluctant to leave. The annual galas are major fundraising events for the Czech Center Museum Houston, as is true for many non-profit organizations. Guests are asked to contribute a nominal $150 price considering this is major fundraiser, and most Houston benefits are generally $300 and up for admission for banquet tickets knowing that a portion of the proceeds are dedicated to the general operation and goals of the organization. As always, a great many of our members and friends contribute to these affairs over and beyond just the admission price of the Gala. What made this event especially significant is the revenue raised by the participation of two SPJST lodges—Lodge 88, Houston and Lodge 142, Houston. Of course, many of our members are SPJST members, and many also were there. But, we were absolutely delighted that these two lodges chose to fund four tables at the Gala. This very significant partnering means so much as they went beyond just supporting their own organizations and reached

out to join with us in making our Gala a successful event along with other significant donors listed in our program. We had a houseful of VIP guests! The Gala honored our volunteers. “We honor, not just today, but every day, our volunteers, members of the Czech Center Museum Houston Guild. They tend the Prague International Gift Shop, give docent historical tours, meet every visitor to the CCMH from around the world, answer every telephone call for its execution. We educate all who enter, the importance of embracing their heritage from wherever, to know who they are, as the roots to being a citizen of the world, not only as Texans or as Americans. Volunteers are unpaid, yet give financial and charitable support to help grow our institution to be enjoyed by others via education, service, the arts, culture, history and heritage. We honor our ancestors in whose memory the CCMH was built, to remember they came to America through great trials and tribulations, stayed, and made a difference, as all immigrant groups have. We honor all our members, friends, board members, past board members, guests present here today and those who could not attend.” Submitted by, Bill and Effie Rosene Lodge 232, Mid-Houston —SPJST—
