Host the Float; promote SPJST
Can you believe that Christmas is coming up real soon? We will begin
constructing props and decorating the floats for Christmas in a couple weeks. A listing of parades that the SPJST Float will participate in appears on page 3. If your lodge or youth club has a parade in your town or community and would like to host the float, give me a call. A Home Office driver brings the float, sets it up, drives through the parade, packs the float, and returns it to Temple. We ask that lodges/youth clubs hosting the float have enthusiastic riders for the parade! The float is a great promotional tool for SPJST, and participating in a parade is a lot of fun. Give me a call if you are interested in hosting the float during the Christmas season. And, we are also booking for 2013 parades.
Sales Agents’ October Blitz Contest Katherine and I enjoyed lunch with the Insurance Department last week. The Communication and Marketing Departments are working on several upcoming iniatives so it was great to get together and share ideas. During lunch, Vice President McBride announced a special contest for sales agents. The winning agent who submits the most applications (see official rules on front page) between now and October 24 will receive two tickets to the Dallas Cowboys vs. New York Giants football game. Maybe, just maybe, this winning SPJST sales agent will bring some luck to the Cowboys and pull them to victory at that game! Best wishes to SPJST sales agents and to the Dallas Cowboys! And, members, now is a great
time to think about your own life insurance. Do you know how much coverage you have? Is it enough? What about your spouse and other loved ones? Are they insured? Do you know who your beneficiary is? Give your SPJST sales agent a call. He or she will be glad to help you. And, if you do not know who your agent is, give us a call at the Home Office (800) 72-SPJST or (800) 7277578.
Punctuation is Powerful An English professor wrote the words: “A woman without her man is nothing”
on the chalkboard and asked his students to punctuate it correctly. All of the males in the class wrote: “A woman, without her man, is nothing.” All of the females in the class wrote: “A woman: without her, man is nothing.”

Father proud of heritage; looked forward to Vestnik
Dear Ms. Zavodny, Thank you so much for publishing my dad’s (William J. Cerveny) obituary. You have no idea how much this would have meant to my father. He looked forward to receiving the Vestnik and always shared it with anyone who would listen. He encouraged my mother, myself, my two children, as well as family friends, to read it while he would share information he learned from it. It really brought a joy to his life that nothing else could fill. My father was so proud of his heritage that I would have to say, that is what defined him first and foremost, as he was 100 percent Texas Czech as is my mother (both first generation Americans). His father, Joseph Cerveny, used to sell SPJST insurance and his uncle, Frank Cerveny, was District Four Director at one time. So, I think the SPJST pride was instilled in him very early in life. And, of course, as soon as he married my mother, he made sure that she became a member as well as all four of us children. So this pride has continued in me and my children. Thank you, Nancy L. Cerveny-Zinno —SPJST—

back. Daniela would like to return to the USA and especially to Texas, as I have spoken so much about it. I know that she would be good for a fundraising event. Funny thing, I take the train from Podivin to Brno then a salina tramvaj (street car) to their business. Going by train, I get a senior discount and every time I am asked to show my ID or passport for proof of my age, it is like being 21 and carded when going to a tavern! I don’t know if it is “good” to look so young or not. Haha! Fraternally, Jan z Podivin John A. Kuba Lodge 133, San Antonio —SPJST—

From the Fraternal Department
State Fraternal Activities Coordinator: October Updates Some District Fall Fun Day meetings have been held in the month of September. Reports from members who attended have all been very favorable. Host lodges have done an excellent job preparing for these Fun Days. Remember, the fall meetings are fun events. All business is typically limited to timely or emergency issues. What a great time to meet fellow members in your district, renew old acquaintances and make new ones! Coming up in October will be: District One—October 14 SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm District Three—October 28 Lodge 84, Dallas District Four—October 13 Southwest Park Baptist Church in Abilene
100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive Spread the word! October 1 kicked off the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive which will benefit the scholarship fund. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Donations of any amount will be accepted and added to the general fund that is maintained by the Home Office. In 2011, a total of 62 scholarships were awarded for a grand total of $63,500. Thanks to all who donated. No amount is too small or too large. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive will run through March 31, 2013.
Plan to Observe Czech Heritage Month October is Czech Heritage Month. That is something to consider if you are looking for an enjoyable theme for your October meeting. Here is an idea: How about hosting a covered dish social at your October meeting with an emphasis on Czech food? Many good, traditional, and modern recipes can be found in the SPJST cookbooks.
Fraternalist of the Year Nominations It’s time to start thinking about selecting your lodge’s Fraternalist of the Year for 2012. This is your chance to recognize a stand-out individual who through example and accomplishment, provided outstanding service to your lodge or community this past year.
Your lodge’s fraternalist of the year will also be recognized at the 2012 SPJST Awards Banquet scheduled for January 26, 2013, at the Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center in Temple, Texas. Please know that your local lodge fraternalist of the year may be chosen in a variety of ways. You decide the method that works best for you. The main emphasis should be on making sure that all adult members ages 16 or older be considered without bias. Individuals previously honored by your lodge may be honored again if they meet your selection criteria. Important to note: The entry form that will be used for submitting your lodge fraternalist for SPJST Statewide Fraternalist of the Year is being simplified and will be mailed to you within the next couple of weeks. The main thing to remember is that SPJST has a lot of great volunteers within our ranks, and we want to give credit where credit is due. Thanks for tending to this item at your October, November, or December meeting. If you have any questions, please give me a call.
Fraternal Alliance Of Texas Bowling Tournament Start making plans now to be in New Braunfels, Texas, on Saturday, February 9, 2013, at Fiesta Lanes, located at 1202 Huisache Avenue (behind HEB on Walnut Street) for the Ninth Annual Fraternal Alliance Of Texas Bowling Tournament to raise funds for scholarships. All lodges and/or members are encouraged to bring an item for the silent auction which will be held in conjunction with the bowling tournament to raise additional funds. Those who participated in past years will attest that it was a fun day filled with lots of fraternalism shared with many brother and sister fraternals from all parts of the state of Texas. Teams again this year will consist of five members – any combination of men and women. Lane assignments and late registration (provided lanes are available) will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday with bowling starting at 12 noon. A handicap of 80 percent of 200 per game will be added to the total score following the completion of the third game. All teams are encouraged to pre-register by February 1. A flyer will be available at www.spjst.org.
Congratulations to Hannah Dawn Kovar of Lodge 9, Snook in District One and Clay Patrick Altenhoff of Lodge 30, Taiton in District Six! They were 2011 SPJST winners in the Fraternal Alliance Of Texas Scholarship Program. Winners of the 2012 scholarships will be announced at the Fraternal Alliance Of Texas convention to be held at Hilton Garden Inn in Temple, Texas, on October 20. Lodge 20, Granger Member Darwin Machu Introduces “The Brick Sidewalk”
Congratulations to Darwin Machu of Lodge 20, Granger who recently published “The Brick Sidewalk,” a story about his life experiences that he has worked on for the past 15 years. To commemorate the publishing, Darwin’s family hosted an open house/book signing on Sunday, August 19. From the book’s preface: One day, about 1995, when I was talking about my many experiences growing up, my children, Rhonda and Greg, listened, and then suggested that I write a book, since I had such a great memory about my childhood. I just laughed. I explained to them that I had never had very good handwriting, and it wasn’t enhanced when I lost two of my fingers and mangled two others. They had the answer: “You can type the stories. With computers, it is much easier to type.” I had not tried to type since I got out of the Army in 1954, and with my 10 thumbs and my history of learning to type, I doubted that I would have much luck typing. One day, I decided to try my hand at typing on the computer, and I discovered that I could do it . . . slowly, and
with a bunch of errors, but . . . I could still type! So I decided to begin typing the stories, as they occurred to me. The fact that I learned to use the computer has completely changed my life. As I worked on my new project and talked with my friends and relatives, we often recalled things that happened many years ago. That brings back many memories of my younger years. I began to think about all the interesting information that is lost, from generation to generation, because the younger generation doesn’t have time or doesn’t really care about “the good old days.” I have wished many times that I had questioned my parents about their experiences growing up and the experiences of their early married life. Others have told me that they, too, regret losing these tidbits of information that make our families so

interesting. So I began to think that this book could be my legacy. One day, perhaps, my descendents will want to read it and will get some family information, along with a few laughs, about my simple, carefree, somewhat mischievous life as a Czech farm boy in the 1930s and up to the time that I moved to Austin and began family life there. I would like to acknowledge three ladies who have shared pictures and recollections with me. My sister Sadie was tremendous help in recalling the details of our life on the farm and Sybil (Machu) Stojanik furnished information she had, including pictures of the family. Frances Barton graciously supplied the photo of my teacher, Evelyn (Dusek) Barton and her husband Ted. Other family members, classmates, and friends helped, too, as we recalled special times together.
I appreciate the suggestion from my children that I write a book about my life. The process has been a huge endeavor, which I would have never begun without their words of encouragement. I appreciate the work that my wife Nancy did. She had the job of taking all of my typewritten stories and piecing them together to help the information flow. And, the person who deserves the most credit, and the person I can never thank enough for all the encouragement and work that she did in the final stages of the book, is our editor Deane Hodon. Without her help, this book would never have been published. The stories herein are my recollections, and the dates I used are those I believe to be correct. Others may have different twists of some of the information. It is my hope that everyone who reads the book will find it interesting, entertaining, and informative. The book is available by contacting Darwin or Nancy (512) 218-1559 or emailing nbmachu@aol.com or dlmachu1@aol.com —SPJST—

Ennis Sewing Circle
Ennis Sewing Circle met on September 13, 2012. Ann Clagett, Irene Prachyl, Dorothy Prachyl, and I arrived at 8 a.m. We started stretching Irene’s quilt, a bowtie pattern, really pretty, for her granddaughter Jordan. We also arranged table and chairs. By that time, Eleanora Pelzel, Martha Ritchey, Dorothy Booth, Dorothy Kudrna, Pat Fowler, and Victoria Vlk came, and we had quilters all around. We also had two new guests Cathy Falkenbach and her mother Evila Cervantes that joined our Circle, and they are quilters. We are so happy to have them. By lunch time, we had 21 members and four guests – Cathy, Evila, Joe, and Julius. President Dorothy led us in prayer, and our quilters always to get to go first in line for lunch. Thank you, members, for the delicious food and thank you to the kitchen crew for the set up, clean up, and the member who took out the trash. She didn’t want her name mentioned, but thank you. After lunch, the quilters returned to

quilting, and President Dorothy called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and a moment of silence was held for Rupert Hoeing brother of Eleanora Pelzel, Geraldine Jezek, William Dlabaj, Ruphine Patak, Albert Zabojnik, Raymond Slovak, Willie Kucera, George Janicek, Alfred Laznovsky, Herbet Ludwig, and Albert Gurecky. Secretary Margaret was unable to attend, but she dropped off her minutes, which were read by Ann Clagett. Treasurer Dorothy gave her report, and both were approved as read. Sunshine Lady Eleanora announced our one and only birthday celebrant - Libbie Vrla. “Happy Birthday” was sung to her. Eleanora had a birthday card for all to sign for Sadie Kubin - her birthday will be October 5. Pat Fowler announced we will quilt for Eleanora in October, Junior Sokol Polka Festival quilt in November, and December, we have our Christmas party. Pat also reminded if anyone had a top ready for quilting to be sure and put their name down for 2013. The kitchen committee reported that we will need plastic spoons next month. Olga Krysinski volunteered to bring them. Thank you to Willie Matus for donating dessert plates and Ginny Svehlak - sugar. Someone brought paper towels, but sorry, I didn’t get your name. We truly appreciate all that our members donate. Bertha Podhrasky reminded everyone about the Czech Heritage festival to be held at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas in the African American building on October 7. They always need help. It is a fun-filled day, many different countries will be represented with performances, and of course, Sokol gymnastics will also participate. The Circle voted to purchase an ad in the program book, same as last year. Victoria Vlk was thanked for her donation to the Circle for quilting her
quilt last month. Pat Fowler had scrap material donated by Betty Gillespie if anyone wanted any. Pat, also, was selling Telico Volunteer Fire Department tickets. Their annual barbecue, dance, and auction fundraiser was planned for September 29. We had a brief discussion on our shut-in members’ Christmas gifts. You know, Christmas will be here before you know it. Irene thanked all who quilted on her quilt. She also said she has started volunteering at Helping Hands Food Shelters. They are always in need of food items such as peanut butter and jelly, noodles, soup, spaghetti, and items like that. She suggested that we all bring an item like this to the next meeting. I think that is a very good idea. Eleanora told of her trip to visit her aunts last month. It sounded great. One aunt is 91, and the other is 96 years of age. The one who is 91 has a new car, and she drove them all over the country. The story she told was really funny. Olga Krysinski told of her trip and cruise to Alaska. Olga, her two daughters, and sister Bernice Gee flew to Vancouver, boarded a ship, sailed for seven days, saw icebergs, and lots of glaciers, and two whales right next to their ship. In Skagway, they went gold-panning, but didn’t find any gold; did enjoy the show, and the summit was gorgeous. By train, they went to Dencli. She said the colors were so pretty - red, yellow, burnt orange, apricot colors - so many different fall colors. They went to McKinley Wilderness Lodge and visited several small towns and did a lot of shopping. Then, they boarded a plane for Houston, a six- and one-half hour flight then on to Dallas. She was glad to be back home. Libbie Vrla, Lil Kosarek, and Joyce
and Joe Ehrenberger told of their trip to Russia. In Russia, they went on a cruise. Libbie told of things they did and saw then Joyce added to it then Lil added a little. I’m sure Libbie will write about it in her Friendship Club letter. They had a wonderful time. President Dorothy reminded all that the next meeting will be October 11. We then had the door prize drawing. Month before last, Georgia Holy won it, last month I won it, and guess what? Georgia Holy won it again this month. Little gifts were passed out by Dorothy Kudrna - always fun. Motion was made to adjourn the meeting, and Pat seconded the motion. Thanks, everyone for coming. The next meeting is October 11. We will quilt, have lunch, door prize, and little gift exchange. Also, remember to bring an item for Helping Hands Food Pantry. Stay well and see you. Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST—
Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth
Our meeting took place on Tuesday, September 11, 2012. September 11 is a day that is still so vivid in our memory. We began with a prayer of remembrance for those lost 11 years ago and the Pledge of Allegiance. The Pledge of Allegiance took on a special meaning this day. President Marlene Bass welcomed the “crowd” (yeah!) of 51 members including a few men. The minutes were read and approved, and a note from Robyn Brownlee was shared. Robyn was present and feeling much better after her hospital stay. It was good to have her back, as well as her mother.

The financial report was given, and we continue to be in the black. As Sunshine Chairman, Pauline sent cards to Theresa Clay and Linda Horner. Ladies, we send our thoughts and prayers to each of you, that you will be doing much better by now. Treasurer Pauline also reported on her mystery illness which was not the mumps as the doctors first thought. She is no longer a mystery, but I can’t spell what they decided she has. We also send our prayers to her as she deals with unpleasantness. Under old business, the activities for Czech Heritage Day were discussed. Evelyn Scaff agreed to oversee the cakewalk fundraiser, and we appreciate her willingness to take the lead. Donations of cakes or money would certainly be appreciated to boost our bank account. Our thanks to Evelyn for her willingness to help us out. New business discussion regarding changing the once-a-year special meal from November to December took place. A motion was made, seconded, and passed. We will now have our catered meal in conjunction with our Christmas Party on December 11. Woohoo! Can you believe that Christmas is only 83 days away. Good golly, it’s time to start shopping! I think I hear jingle bells! Hostesses were Doris Maple, Catherine Ann Davis (who snuck a deviled egg before we got to them), Alene Kercho, and Wilma Perry. Thanks to you for stepping in to help. Good stuff was served, and once again I ate like there was a famine in the country.
Happy Birthday, Benjamin Dodd!
Happy birthday to Benjamin Dodd, who celebrated his special day on October 4, 2012. He is the grandson of Joe and Jean Motl. They are all members of Lodge 155, Austin.
Our birthday members included Mary Ann Krivanek, Luy Martinez, Don Morbitzer, Betty Loyd, Margaret Adamek, Faith Lindeau, and Liz Howard. Mary Ann has been associated with SPJST for a very long time and is more than active at the lodge and at her church. Betty’s mother was a member, and we loved her statement that she was “full-blooded Czech” and she’s proud of it.” Her daughter Cherie was there, as was her granddaughter, and her “due any moment” grandbaby. Liz Howard has also been a member for many, many years and loves to come visit with everyone. Several announcements were made:
1. Sandi Celusniak talked about the Nuns of Saint Mary Namur and how much they need assistance. Sister St. John has written a book, A Little Bit of Good, and the proceeds from its sale will benefit the Nuns greatly. The book is available at the OLV Care Center, 909 West Shaw in Fort Worth. We understand it is very interesting and tells the story of that particular order. 2. Margaret Laymance’s husband Don passed away recently, as did Harold Green, who is a lodge member. Our condolences and prayers go out to each family as they deal with their losses.
3. Joan and Bobby Shropshire announced their anniversary. It’s been 53 years and when asked how they would celebrate, the reply was “by attending the Ladies Circle Meeting.”
4. Pauline and Don Morbitzer celebrated their 53rd anniversary last week, and they really did celebrate several times over.
The meeting proceeded with the giving of a beautiful basket made by Gloria Farek and 15 door prizes. Our thanks to all very thoughtful ladies who brought items Yours truly said the blessing for lunch, and everyone ate to their hearts’ content. Bingo followed, and it was awesome to have such a great crowd! Just a wonderful day. See you in October. Joan Simek Shropshire Secretary —SPJST—

The Wall
A Rabbit Named Jack
By d.knape Lodge 187, Round Rock
We’d like to find out who in fact had the gall to call a rabbit Jack
His heart must have been cruel and black to name a lovely rabbit Jack The name is so inane it lacks and should indeed be taken back
By d.knape Lodge 187, Round Rock A wall stood tall between the two each with something to protect
The wall was built of stone in fact no one would listen or inspect
Their greetings nil, their words so few a hatred grew from pure neglect
Behind the wall they never knew their rigid views were circumspect The wall entombed them, it was true no word of kindness ever let And in the end, between the two the pity was they never met. —SPJST—

State Youth Director: October updates
Dear Youth Leaders, October is here, and that means it is Czech Heritage Month. Here is your opportunity to learn more about Czech culture and heritage. The 2012-2013 State Royalty Court (King Jerry Pechal, Queen Emily Lewis, Duke Michael Hoelscher, and Duchess Kyleigh Hruska) made their first public appearance at Westfest in West, Texas, on Labor Day weekend. Westfest is a celebration of Czech heritage and culture held annually in the Central Texas town of West. The Royalty Court rode in the parade and also made an appearance in the Cultural Amphitheater. As an added treat, Royalty Court distributed SPJST fans to the audience and helped with the fraternal games and game booth. The Royalty Court also assisted with registering the public for the drawing of college logo canvas chairs. Thanks to Lodge 183, Arlington members who rode on the float in the Westfest parade.

Fall District Youth Counselor’s Meeting The 2012 Fall District Youth Counselor Meeting was September 22 and 23 at Schlitterbahn Resort in New Braunfels, Texas. The setting at Schlitterbahn during off season is a very relaxing destination for a group meeting. We had our meeting on the back porch of the DYC’s suite overlooking the Comal River. Thanks to Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek and District One Director/Supreme Lodge Chairman Donnie Victorick who spoke to us at the beginning of our meeting. They communicated to us how important the youth program is to the future of SPJST. The SPJST Youth Program could not do it without the district youth counselors, assistant district youth counselors, and youth leaders. Both Brian and Donnie expressed they want to hear our ideas for the youth program, debate the ideas, and possibly act on them. In that time, we did come up with some ideas that we will be talking about in the coming months. Youth leaders, we had a very productive meeting. Before adjourning our meeting at

Dear Members, The annual District Two Fall Meeting was held on Sunday, September 9, 2012. Lodge 47, Seaton hosted the event. What a fun-filled afternoon for all those who attended! Thank you, Lodge 47, Seaton officers and members, for making our day so enjoyable. The meal was delicious. Thanks to all who prepared it. There were 160 in attendance at the meeting. I was so pleased to see so many youth (approximately 70 in attendance). We began our day with the introduction of District Two/State King
Jerry Pechal of Lodge 47, Seaton and Duke Michael Hoelscher of Lodge 24, Cyclone and District Two Queen Julia Zavodny and Duchess Emma Regan, both of Lodge 47, Seaton. Thank you, Jerry and Julia, for presenting your winning royalty speeches. September 9 was a special day for many in our audience. Those special to our hearts—grandparents—were asked to stand and be recognized. A special award was given to Mr. Frank Tomascik of Lodge 15, Buckholts who was recognized as our “Youngest (age 91) Grandparent” attending our meeting. Going trick-or-treating For many people, autumn events like Halloween and Harvest Day are fun times to dress up in costumes, go trick-or-treating, attend parties, and eat yummy treats. These events are also opportunities to provide nutritious snacks, get physical activity, and focus on safety. Below are tips to help make the festivities fun and safe for trick-ortreaters and party guests.
Swords, knives, and costume accessories should be soft and flexible. Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk in groups or with a trusted adult. Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you. Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating.
daily dose of 60 minutes of physical activity. Be sure walking areas and stairs are well-lit and free of obstacles that could result in falls. Keep candle-lit jack-o'lanterns and luminaries away from doorsteps, walkways, landings, and curtains. Place them on sturdy tables, keep them out of the reach of pets and small children, and never leave them unattended. Remind drivers to watch out for trick-or-treaters and to drive safely. Follow these tips to help make the festivities fun and safe for everyone!
Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating so others will see you. Always test make-up in a small area first. Remove it before bedtime. Look both ways before crossing the street. Lower your risk of injury by not wearing decorative contact lenses. Only walk on sidewalks if possible, or edge of the road facing traffic. Wear well-fitting masks, costumes, and shoes to avoid injury.
Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats. Enter homes only if you're with a trusted adult. Never walk near lit candles or luminaries. Wear flame-resistant costumes. Expecting trick-or-treaters or party guests? Provide healthier treats for trick-or-treaters such as low-calorie treats and drinks. For party guests, offer a variety of fruits, vegetables, and cheeses. Use party games and trick-or-treat time as an opportunity for kids to get their

Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club hears family stories
Dear Readers, Family reunions are a great way to make a connection to your ancestors which is what our youth club was able to experience at our last meeting on Sunday, September 9, 2012. The meeting took place during the Trojacek reunion so this was a great opportunity to incorporate one of our Czech heritage projects. Pat Trojacek Fowler, who is Justin and Jacob Mraz’s grandmother, was our guest speaker. Pat shared the story of how our ancestors traveled by ship from Czechoslovakia to the United States. My great-grandfather Josef and Pat’s grandfather Anton (brothers) came on the same ship — the S/S Bohemia from Bremen to New York, but at different times. Pat showed us a picture of the ship and made mention of how these ships were not your everyday

Carnival Cruise liners! The travelers suffered many hardships such as sickness, tight quarters, lack of food, and sometimes untimely death.
My grandma, Annie C. Martinek, was born a Trojacek. At the reunion, photos were displayed and one that has always fascinated me, is of Annie as a 10-month-old baby and her oldest sister Mary, who was about 18 or so. Grandma would tell the story of this picture to us many times. She said that her mother promised her mother, whom she left behind in Czechoslovakia, that she would send her a picture of her newest addition to the family. By the time the picture was taken and arrived to its destination (which, in those days, may have taken two to three months), her mother had passed away and therefore never got to see the picture of baby Annie.

A big thank you to Olivia and Samuel Zmolik for taking charge of this project and to all the youth and donors who participated. Betty, thank

BENEVOLENCE
Presidentr řádu Freddie Kaluža zahájil schůzi, přivítal přítomné, složili jsme přísahu vlajce a republice, kterou zastupuje a uctili památku našich zemřelých členů. Rodinám vyslovujeme upřímnou soustrast a odešlým klidný odpočinek. Naše pokladní Mary Lou Mynář podala velmi pěknou finanční zprávu a naše vklady peněz přibývají každým rokem, i když bankovní úroky jsou vemi nízké.

• Letters to Bibbie •
This article is one of a series of “Letters to Bibbie,” written by Ivo Marek to his distant relative Vickie (Bibbie) Cooper of Granger, Texas. Ivo and his parents live in Choceň, Czech Republic. Ivo is an engineer by profession and an accomplished weaver and textile artist. In addition, his hobbies are gardening, cooking, and fine-tuning his English.
Dear Bibbie, Although it’s after Easter, the high price of hen eggs goes on in the Czech Republic. Folks are buying chickens in large quantities, and interest in domestic hen breeding is constantly on the rise.

My parents do not remember anything like this ever happening before. A poultry breeding company worked in Czechoslovakia from 1965 until 1975. Great feed-house of broilers, Xaverov, was in Prague. The company had seven centers, with corporate headquarters located in Berounska behind Prague. It was possible to buy

from hatcheries 30 unfertile eggs for 6 Kčs or 1 egg for 0.20 Kčs (U.S. $ equivalent about 1.7 cents, supposing that U.S. $1 had value of 12 Kčs at that time.) In this center, they bred around 20,000 hens.
Since 1989, fowl breeding has come to a halt, and egg prices are rising. Eggs and slaughter fowl began to heighten from abroad. Egg prices in the last year have been in the range from 2.50 Kčs up to 3.00 Kčs for one egg. The reason for the price of eggs this spring in the Czech Republic is a new EU (European Union) ruling. Breeders had to enlarge their cages, or change from farming in cages to farming on bedding. It caused the farmer to reduce the size of his flocks, plus the additional costs for new technology. This cost caused the price of 10 eggs to climb somewhere up to 60 to 70 Kčs! Some countries, namely Poland, supply almost 70 percent of the eggs in the Czech Republic. Supervisory authorities of the Czech Republic decided to control imported eggs and return the ones that didn’t come from enlarged cages or from alternative technologies. The EU decided that Member States must give lists of egg producers with registration numbers and the type of technology. The State that doesn’t have an origin of the eggs
from the point of view of technology may not import eggs into the Czech Republic.
Czech inhabitants have reacted to the situation by renewing its domestic hen breeding, and are buying up laying hens. When a fowl farm in Střižov u Přeštic in west Bohemia sold oneyear-old laying hens for 35 Kčs for one hen, a crowd frenzy burst forth. From the evening of Tuesday, April 16 to Wednesday, the 17th, many customers lined up in front of the fowl farm in Střižov near Pilsen. The very first customers came on Tuesday at 16:30 in the afternoon (4:30 p.m). They waited in the cold night in cars equipped with sleeping bags and heatflasks with coffee. This over-measure of interest about hens caused a traffic collapse. After waiting 14 hours, the sale began at 7 a.m. Customers bought as many as 200 hens at once. Before noon, police had to block the roads in the area. Another fowl-farm, Druko Střižov, is selling 16-week-old chickens for 135 Kčs for one chicken. Their website says, “All chickens have booked.” Another fowl farm in Dynin in Českobudějovicko region still does not remember such a big interest about chickens. The egg crisis is graduating. Many keepers report that all their young chickens have been sold out. Abroad,
