The group welcomed new directors Jesse Pospisil of District Two and Karen Kaspar of District Six. The 2013 Supreme Lodge Chairman and Vice Chairman were elected. Early Voting Starts This Week Election Day is Tuesday, November 6, but early voting started October 22 and continues through November 2. Early voting sure beats standing in long lines on Election Day. So take advantage of these two weeks of great opportunity, and exercise your right to vote today!
Lodge/Youth Club Mailouts We received several lodge mailouts last week for Christmas parties. Thanks to the lodges and youth clubs who are planning ahead and submitting their information early. This really helps us! Each SPJST lodge and each SPJST youth club is offered (free of charge) one mailout per year. Submit the information to the Vestnik/Communication Department. We design and prepare a flyer/letter and mail it to all member households of the respective lodge. (Youth club mailouts are sent to lodge members who are ages five to 16.) Give us a call or email details.
Get Well Soon, Jerry! We send get well wishes to Honorary Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas who underwent knee surgery recently. Brother Jerry is recovering at Cornerstone Gardens Rehabilitation Center in Temple. Jerry
served as Financial Secretary and retired in 2010 with 50 years of service to the Home Office. Best wishes, Jerry, for a speedy recovery. We miss you.
Don’t Quit When things go wrong, as they sometimes will, When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill, When the funds are low and the debts are high, And you want to smile, but you have to sigh, When care is pressing you down a bit, Rest, if you must, but don’t you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns, As every one of us sometimes learns, And many a failure turns about, When he might have won had he stuck it out; Don’t give up though the pace seems slow— You may succeed with another blow. Often the goal is nearer than, It seems to a faint and faltering man, Often the struggler has given up, When he might have captured the victor’s cup, And he learned too late when the night slipped down, How close he was to the golden crown.
Success is failure turned inside out— The silver tint of the clouds of doubt, And you never can tell how close you are, It may be near when it seems so far, So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit— It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit. —Author unknown —SPJST—

Reader appreciates “The Moravians” at Muziky, Muziky
Ms. Zavodny: I am writing you because I attended the Muziky, Muziky program at Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange on Sunday, October 14 and was so impressed with the brass band from Ennis that I would like to spread the word about them. I hope that they can become better known in our Texas Czech community. The group is called “The Moravians” and is from the town of Ennis, Texas. The group started among high school friends (about two years ago) and played Czech music, principally polkas and waltzes at the Muziky, Muziky event. Their vocalists even sing in Czech. They are excellent musicians and play with such joy and happiness. It just spilled over into the audience.
Because these young men are probably 18 and 19 years old, they might not last long as a Czech band and should be enjoyed while they are still together. Lorence Bravenec Lodge 88, Houston Retired TAMU Professor —SPJST—

From the Supreme Lodge President Lodges Encouraged to Designate Their 2012 Fraternalist of the Year
Dear Brothers and Sisters, Fraternalism — doing good for others — is a natural and outward expression of compassion. Our fraternal brothers and sisters who give of themselves help to define the concept of fraternalism and further the goals of SPJST. Through the Fraternalist of the Year Program, SPJST lodges honor lodge members who through example and accomplishment have provided outstanding fraternal service to their lodge, Society, and community during the past year. SPJST 2012 Fraternalist of the Year program information as well as the newly revised, easy-to-complete nominating form were mailed to lodge fraternal activities coordinators (FACs) and lodge secretaries this past week. I hope that every active lodge con-
siders designating a Fraternalist of the Year in 2012 — someone who has shown a strong commitment to SPJST while making a tireless effort to make a positive difference in the lives of others. Complete information regarding the SPJST’s Fraternalist of the Year Program including a new, shorter and easy-to-complete nomination form may be viewed online at www.spjst.org. Please review this information at your next meeting. Thank you for your attention and for all that you do to bring vitality and meaning to the fraternal ideal. It’s a blessing and a pleasure working with you. Fraternally, Brian Vanicek Supreme Lodge President —SPJST—

Lodge 187 Round Rock welcomes new members
Jennave Fuchs started off our meeting with some entertainment of showing us a painted gourd that she got from her neighbor. Then, Jennave brought some old boxes—one was a Flor De Melba cigar box from the 1930s. We all talked about how we all keep old boxes and reuse them to save things in them. What do you put in them to save?
Here is what some said: decoder rings, green stamps, paper dolls, receipts for taxes, and coupons. Birthdays and anniversaries were announced. In September, Wilford Fuchs enjoyed his 91st birthday, and on September 29, Johnnie Haak celebrated 80 years of age. In October, Mona Larson celebrated her 81st birthday. On October 22, Wilford and Jennave Fuchs celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. Congratulations to all of these members! The lodge discussed whom we should nominate as fraternalist of the year, and we all selected and voted on Lindsey Johnson. She is honored to represent our lodge. We also voted Lindsey Johnson as assistant youth leader since she already helps out so much with the little ones. Lodge members also met our newest members, Kadnce and Kember Meyer, who are 11 months old, but turn one year old on November 1. They are the daughters of Misty and Kenneth Meyer. We ended the meeting with a wonderful potluck. Thank you to all! Blessings to all, Jennifer McCarthy Reporter/Youth Leader —SPJST—

The roll of membership was called, and we had nine members present. The minutes were read and approved. Our president had a lot to tell us so she asked Treasurer Vernell Foyt to give her report first. Sunshine and Ticket Chairlady Delores Pavlicek was ill so there was no report from her. The president said there will be no meeting in November since we will be taking a bus trip that day. She asked for cakes for the month of December, and Vernell Foyt, Bette Hurta, and Almeida Bravenec will bring cakes. December 12 will be our Christmas dinner, and we will have turkey and dressing, gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans, slaw, and cranberries. Vernell Foyt will make the arrangements with Ben’s Chuck Wagon for dinner. Bette Hurta will send invitations to the board and lodge officers. Nell Stautberg then made an announcement that on November 6 at 11:30 a.m., Jersey Village Baptist Church will have a lunch, and the Sal-
vation Army Harbor Light Choir will perform. She will collect money and will get the tickets for this. Tickets are $7 per person. Let her know by October 28 if you want to go. Next, we discussed Czech Day which will be October 28. We decided to get 30 dozen kolaches for this occasion. Nell will make the arrangements to get the kolaches. Helen Hegwood talked to us about our trip to La Grange on November 14. The bus will leave at 8:30 a.m. so we need to be at the lodge no later than 8:15 a.m. Calcutta was won by Willie Mae Pechacek, Louise Jacob, Helen Hegwood, and Vernell Foyt. We had one birthday celebrant— Mary Krippner, and we all sang “Happy Birthday” to her. We had a closing prayer. We then all said “The Lord’s Prayer,” and the meeting was adjourned. We had a lunch of lasagna, garlic bread, and salads along with coffee and iced tea and cakes for dessert. Thanks, Louise Jacob, for getting the lasagna. Fraternally. Bette Hurta, Secretary —SPJST—

The Music of Rain
By d.knape Lodge 187, Round Rock
thunder booms like kettle drums going away away the sound leads me into the distance
raindrops tap tap start to click clack on
my window calling me to come look
rain hisses against the glass occasionally a lightening strike bangs and flashes in crescendo accenting the energy of the night nothing is nicer than the sound of a good rain a lullaby of pleasantness as I lay listening wanting more thinking to myself soft thoughts in concert with the rain with the music of it what joy there is in just the listening
who needs an orchestra I have the music of rain let it play. —SPJST—

In Memory of Matilda Bubela
Matilda V. Bubela, age 89, passed away on April 2, 2012, and went to be with her Heavenly Father. Matilda was born in Columbus, Texas on January 28, 1923, to John and Albina Urban and was the youngest of five children. She married Jerome V. Bubela on August 14, 1943. Jerry was in the service when they married. After his dis- Matilda Bubela charge, they spent the first few years of their marriage farming in Fayette County, Texas. They moved to Houston in 1952 and built a home in Houston Heights. Although never having children of their own, Matilda and Jerry had numerous nieces and nephews and were godparents to many of them. They were founding members of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and supported their church community in many ways throughout their lives. Matilda was especially proud of their contribution of the baptismal font located at the front entrance of the church. Her religion and her church were always foremost in her heart and although she was not

able to attend church services in the last few years, anyone visiting her would always see a rosary near her, if not in her hands. She enjoyed friendships with many of the priests of her church and always remembered their birthdays and anniversaries of ordination and other special days. Anyone who visited Matilda often would tell you she loved cats. Her home was filled with pictures of cats, cat knick-knacks, stuffed cats, and for most of her life, her cat friends. She treasured them especially after Jerry passed away and treated them like family. Something else you would notice about Matilda was that you seldom left her house without a “doggie bag.” She would give candy to people who visited or brought her meals, took her for doctor’s visits, or bought her groceries. You never went away unappreciated. She truly had a kind and generous heart.
Matilda was preceded in death by beloved husband Jerry; brothers John Urban of Ellinger and Steve Urban of La Grange; and sisters Clara Chovanec of Columbus and Albina Sralla of Houston. She is survived by many nieces and nephews and friends too numerous to count. The family received friends on Tuesday, April 3 from 5 to 8 p.m. with the rosary being recited at 7 p.m. at the chapel of Pat H. Foley and Co. Funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 4 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Houston. Interment followed at Memorial Oaks Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Matilda’s name may be made to St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, either to the food pantry or the general fund. —SPJST—

District Four youth participate in fall fun day
On Saturday, October 13, 2012, District Four had its fall fun day, hosted by Lodge 229, Abilene, at Southwest Park Baptist Church, and fun it was! There was a pumpkin carving contest, handicraft contest, cake walk, bingo, and hula hoop contest. Ms. Nancy of Lodge 49, Rowena, was the winner in the senior division of the hula hoop contest. What fun! The youth of the district also had their Christmas ornament contest. So glad I did not have to judge, as we have so much talent in this district— they all were winners as far as I am concerned. But, as in any contest, there can only be one blue ribbon awarded in each age group. Winners of the blue ribbons were: ages kindergarten to eight years—Hunter Wood of Lodge 49, Rowena; ages nine to 11 years—Morgann Wood of Lodge 49, Rowena; ages 12 to 14 years—Katelyn Taylor of Lodge 229, Abilene; and ages 15 to high school senior—Chelsy Stevens of Lodge 229, Abilene. The winners will have their ornaments hanging on the SPJST Home Office Christmas tree this holiday season! Youth clubs gathered for a short time to talk about the district youth activities, and youth completed a simple craft. It was a good time for sharing ideas! Thanks to Janice Stevens, Deborah Stevens, their youth club members, and Lodge 229 for hosting the fall fun day and all of the work. They served a chicken strip dinner that was delicious! Members were present from Lodges 49, Rowena; 160, San Angelo; and 229, Abilene. Special guests were Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club Members Enjoy District Two Camp
Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club members attended District Two Camp held at SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm on July 26 to 29, 2012. This year’s camp was all about surviving. Each team had to come up with tribe names, create a tribe flag, build a shelter, and go through an obstacle course. Then, a few brave campers endured the

Lodge 187 Round Rock Youth Club enjoys Halloween party
Hello! The youth club made a graveyard dirt cake and a tray of goodie treats for the adult lodge. Afterwards, we got together and made mummy heads and spider pumpkins to take home while snacking on the treats. Several of the kiddos are going to dress up for Halloween. Brodi Volek says that she will dress up like a taxi driver while Ashley Smith will dress as a nurse. Alexandria Johnson will be a vampire-zombie, and Luke McCarthy is planning to dress as Frankenstein. The rest are still undecided. All of the teenagers mentioned that they like Halloween parties instead of trick-or-treating, but the younger ones still say that they love going trick-or-treating and dressing up. The first method is baking a cake and then crumbling it up into a bowl. Then a container of cake frosting is added, making the mixture moldable. The mixture is then formed into balls, which are put on lollipop sticks and dipped into melted chocolate. The second cake pop method is to purchase pans or special waffle-iron-type devices that turn batter into balls while cooking. Then the cake balls are put on sticks and covered in frosting or chocolate. Candied fruit: Caramel-covered apples are an autumn tradition, but you also can dip bananas into chocolate or pieces of pineapple for a pseudo-healthy treat. Halloween’s world celebrations
Halloween dates back thousands of years to ancient Celts and Europeans. Although Halloween is now largely associated with the celebrations that take place across much of North America, where 65 percent of Americans decorate their homes and places of business in the Halloween spirit, Halloween is celebrated in various ways around the globe. England: In the past, Brits tossed objects such as stones, vegetables, and nuts into a bonfire to frighten away the spirits. These symbolic sacrifices also were used as a form of fortune-telling. If a pebble thrown into the flames at night was no longer visible in the morning, then it was believed that the person who tossed the pebble would not survive another year. Halloween fell out of favor after the Protestant Reformation spread through the country. However, in recent years some have begun to adopt the American tradition of trick-or-treating. Hong Kong: A Halloween-type festival in Hong Kong is known as “Yue Lan,” which is the festival of the hungry ghosts. It is believed that, during this time, spirits roam the world for 24 hours.

France: Halloween is considered an American holiday by most French and was relatively unknown before 1996. Ireland: Ireland is thought to be the birthplace of Halloween, and many of the same traditions of old are still practiced today. In addition to costumes and treats, individuals may play an apple-bobbing game called “snapapple,” where participants have to try to take a bite of an apple suspended on a string. Children also play tricks on neighbors, including “knock-a-dolly,” which is essentially a variation on “ring-and-run.” Spanish-speaking nations: Many Spanish-speaking nations celebrate El Dia de los Muertos. It is supposed to be a joyous event where people remember friends and family members who have died. Candles and incense are burned to help the departed find his or her way home. Austria: Some people will leave bread, water, and a lighted lamp on the table on Halloween night before going to bed. It was once believed that such items would welcome the dead souls back to Earth on a night Austrians considered to be full of strong cosmic energies. Czech Republic: Czechs place chairs by a fireside on Halloween night. There are enough chairs for each living and dead family member. Italy: Halloween traditions have just recently begun to blossom in Italy, where decorations and pumpkins are popular. While many of the traditions borrow from the Americans, there is at least one uniquely Italian tradition taking place in the hill town of Corinaldo. La Notte delle Streghe, “The Night of the Witches,” occurs in this town with music, dancing and a witch-themed fashion show that names Miss Strega (Miss Witch). Australia: Halloween isn’t as popular in Australia as it is in the United

Dear Bibbie, This time I will tell you about the cruel events in Moravia from the 17th century. These events were called, “Witch Trials.” Preserved written documents were kept. The end of the 17th century was a period of approximately 50 years after Emperor’s edict that allowed only the Catholic church in countries of the Czech crown. North Moravia had the Reformation (Protestant) church tradition. The Jesuit order of the Catholic Church pointed out that there was a connection of the Reformation to wizardry. A beggar-woman was blamed in the first proceeding in the year 1678. She was reported to have taken the Holy wafer at Holy Communion, but she did not swallow it— she put it into her prayer book. A parish clerk and parson informed noblemen in Velký Losinách (Great Elk). The baroness from Galle suggested to the manor’s manager to start a hag’s proceeding against the beggar-woman. Mr. Henry Francis Boblig from Edelstate, an inquisitor and executor of law, set up a commission. He had skills with hags’ proceedings in Silesia. The commission blamed the beggar-woman; then others were blamed and were sent to a torture chamber. They had to strip naked and the com-

This article is one of a series of “Letters to Bibbie,” written by Ivo Marek to his distant relative Vickie (Bibbie) Cooper of Granger, Texas. Ivo and his parents live in Choceň, Czech Republic. missioner sought on their bodies so called “signa diabolica” (freckles) with which they say was the devil’s sign of witches. The commission showed torture tools to the victims and physically tortured them until they were forced to plead guilty. Witches were executed by burning at the stake. Boblig especially blamed the daughters from wealthy families for wizardry, so that he could levy their wealth into his profit. Before execution, some of the convicted avowed publicly that they were falsely blamed and were tortured to confess. Some Catholic priests falsely accused innocent people; the most famous was the vicar of Šumperk, Dean Lautner. He was popular among believers for his kindness and forbearance to Protestants. Velký Losinách’s priest, König and other priests made up a protest list against the activities of Boblig and sent it to Olomouc’s Bishop. Boblig gathered against Lautner false accusations of wizardry forced by torture from 36 people. Bishop Charles II from LichtensteinCastelcorn ordered the arrest of Dean Lautner in 1680. Dean refused to plead guilty for four years. That is why the Bishop gave an agreement to his torture in 1684. Lautner was tortured and judges tried to break his resistance. Dean Lautner was burnt at the stake in Mohelnice in September 18, 1685, in the Lord’s summer. After Lautner’s death, Boblig continued his fear work for more than 10 years. The manor Velký Losinách lost competent services and grew poor; Šumperk went through economic decadence; and the wealthiest
burghers perished on stakes. Other towns did not want “Witches’ centers,” so farmers revolted. Boblig began blaming folks from Velký Losinách and Šumperk who were then compelled to make false testimonies against the wealthiest burghers from Olomouc. Olomouc’s councilors sent a protest to the Emperor against the activities of Boblig’s tribunal and throve them to reach the Monarch’s countenance. Boblig had to withdraw his accusations, and the activities of his tribunal were stopped in 1696. During the 18 years, more than 100 folks were killed. Boblig spent the last years of life in peace. He married and

About Daniela Mahoney Born in Prague, Czech Republic, Daniela Sipkova first experienced traditional egg decorating as a child during Easter. Under the guidance of her grandmother she learned the basic wax resistant technique and practiced the craft as a seasonal hobby during her childhood and adolescence. In 1980, Daniela and her mother fled Czechoslovakia and settled in West Germany. Since Daniela spoke five foreign languages, she worked as a freelance translator and interpreter. In 1982, while working in an automotive trade show as an interpreter in Frankfurt, Germany, she met Patrick Mahoney, who was seeking merchandise for his auto parts stores in Portland, Oregon. He not only found new products for his stores, but also a wife.
Wednesday, October 24, 2012
They have been married since spring 1983. In the United States, Daniela returned to traditional egg decorating at Easter time as a hobby and soon developed the craft into a full time business. Over the past 29 years, Daniela participated in hundreds of art shows, craft shows and ethnic festivals nationwide. She also developed educational programs to teach cultural crafts as part of the Czech and Slovak heritage preservation in communitybased settings. She became a resident artist for Young Audiences of Oregon and Washington and the Regional Arts and Culture Council in Portland, Oregon. Daniela is known for organizing large scale egg decorating events for children, such as “1,000 eggs with 1,000 children in four hours.” Daniela has also published several children’s coloring and activity books: Czech Republic; Czech, Moravian and Slovak costumes paper dolls; Czech, Moravian and Slovak costumes coloring book; and Czech and Slovak Castles and Palaces. Daniela originally used the wax resistant method of egg decorating, but since 1987 has been using the engraving technique. Over time, she gravitated from traditional designs inspired by the Czech and Slovak traditions to novelty designs, such as bridges, lighthouses, and even the Statue of Liberty. Her egg ornaments are sold nationwide in museums, galleries, and specialty gift stores. Since in the old mythology the egg symbolizes new life, it became a perfect medium of choice for Daniela to showcase her artistic talents when starting her new life in the United States. The egg became not only a canvas for expressing her feelings through art and her desire to reconnect with her homeland’s traditions, but it also became a bridge to self realization and economic prosperity in a new country. Daniela stated that since spring 1983 she decorated about 84,000 egg ornaments (an average of 10 per day). If stacked in dozen-sized cartons, they would form “Daniela’s tower of Freedom,” about 1,750 feet tall, more than 11 times the size of the Statue of Liberty. Daniela holds two degrees from Portland State University: an undergraduate degree in marketing and a graduate degree in social work (MSW) and currently works in the field of geriatric social work. In the future, Daniela plans to de-

TCGS plans “Czech Veterans: This Parade’s For You”
Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) has set the bar as only it should be for Czech Veterans—high. A wine and cheese reception will be held Friday, November 9, 2012, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Caldwell Civic/Visitor Center, located at 103 Presidential Corridor-Highway 21W in Caldwell, Texas. This reception will honor all Czech veterans and will be the first viewing of the Czech Veterans’ video. Saturday, November 10 begins with registration and morning refreshments at 8 a.m. Special guest speakers include Jerry Curtis, Ralph Muchler, and Patrick Dewane. Mr. Dewane will be the keynote speaker and entertainer who is bringing his “Accidental Hero” performance to Texas. The powerful multimedia show traces a World War II soldier’s journey. “Patrick Dewane’s grandfather refused to talk about his service in World War II, yet when he died his basement yielded a trove of typewritten accounts, photos and rare film footage. Dewane brings this archival material to glowing life in a one-man, multimedia show that offers an enthralling, humorous and heart-warming tale of miraculous escapes and astonishing coincidences. He takes on a dozen different roles as he powerfully recounts his grandfather’s journey through the Battle of the Bulge, the liberation of Czechoslovakia, and the poignant rediscovery of his own roots.” From the Minneapolis Star Tribune, August 5, 2012
Patrick Dewane tells a true story of an American farm boy born into a Czech immigrant family who becomes an officer in World War II. “The Accidental Hero” can be described as a monologue, docudrama, or reminiscence of Dewane’s grandfather’s role played in World War II. There is a unique mix of narration and multimedia enhancements that brings Dewane’s story to life.

“Powerful Multimedia Show Traces World War II Soldier’s Journey”
“Patrick Dewane’s grandfather refused to talk about his service in World War II, yet when he died his basement yielded a trove of typewritten accounts, photos and rare film footage. Dewane brings this archival material to glowing life in a one-man, multi-media show that offers an enthralling, humorous and heartwarming tale of miraculous escapes and astonishing coincidences. He takes on a dozen different roles as he powerfully recounts his grandfather’s journey through the Battle of the Bulge, the liberation of Czechoslovakia and the poignant rediscovery of his own roots.” Minneapolis Star Tribune, August 5, 2012
