Lodge 157, Lubbock Member Angeline Cuba Shockley Achieves Grand Age of 96

Between 1834 and 1900, approximately 200,000 people of Czech descent immigrated from their native lands to America. Many of those found their way to Texas. Impressive numbers; however, statistics alone do not tell the story of Czech immigration and settlement in Texas. People do. One such person is Sister Angeline Shockley, a member of SPJST Lodge 157, Lubbock who recently achieved the Grand Age of 96. As such, Sister Angeline is entitled to all SPJST member benefits with no further dues or assessments required. Like so many of SPJST’s longtime and devoted members, Sister Angeline’s story is deeply rooted in the history of Texas. Our story begins with an early portrait of Runnels County, Texas — 1,060 square miles of broad, rolling prairie in west central Texas. Geo-

graphically, the Colorado River flows through the southern third of Runnels County, from northwest to southeast. Several streams, including Mustang, Oak, Elm, and Valley creeks, rise in the northern part of the county and flow south into the Colorado. The original inhabitants were Jumano Indians, whom the early Spanish explorers encountered in the mid-1650s. During the 1870s the rich grasslands of Runnels County began to attract stockmen

who were willing to risk Indian attacks. The extension of the Texas and Pacific Railway through in the 1880s brought the promise of new settlement. The lure of fertile and available land brought a flood of Czech and German immigrants to Runnels County. Included among them were the Bolf family from Victoria, Texas, and the Olsak family recently arrived from Vsetin, Moravia — now the Czech Republic. It was on January 2, 1910, in Runnels County

that young John Bolf took Mary Olsak for his wife and a new family had begun. First there was a son, Louis, and then another, Robert, Then on September 4, 1916, a precious daughter, Angeline, was born. The Bolfs farmed north of the Miles community in southwestern Runnels County where Angeline attended the one-room Red Bank School. Hard times on the farm took a turn for the worse, Angeline recalls, when the family moved on snowy January 2, 1932, from Runnels County to Levelland — approximately 225 miles to the northwest. As the name implies, says Angeline, “There were no trees . . . only prairies to see.” In spite of being blessed with fertile farmland, the region was sub-

Angeline Shockley

jected to a seasonal assortment of challenges, ranging from droughts and snowstorms to intermittent hailstorms, grasshopper plagues, and dust storms. The most visible evidence of how dry the 1930s became were the dust storms. Tons of topsoil were blown off barren fields and carried in storm clouds for hundreds of miles. The driest region of the Plains – southeastern Colorado, southwest Kansas, and the panhandles of Oklahoma and Texas – became known as the Dust Bowl, and many dust storms started there. “It was necessary to sweep and shovel dirt out the front door before the family could sit down for the evening meal,” recalls Angeline, who was by now attending Levelland High School. “We were living in a three-room shotgun shack but that was home.” The Great Depression of the 1930s represented hard times for most Americans and not just the hard-working families in Levelland. But it wasn’t all bad. It was during this time — July 18, 1935, to be exact — that SPJST Lodge 157, Rozkvet na Plains, or “Rose of the Plains” was organized in Lamb County. “Everyone enjoyed the fellowship of the SPJST lodge,” says Angeline. “SPJST gatherings were all-day affairs. You had your meeting and your visiting and then your dance at night.” Angeline’s husband, Martin Cuba, was one of the 13 charter members of Lodge 157. Angeline and Martin were married on June 13, 1934. The newlyweds farmed in Anton community, located midway between Littlefield and Lubbock. “Martin’s first cotton crop yielded one 500-pound bale,” Angeline says. Martin and Angeline later moved to Levelland where the couple built a two-room house. In addition to farming, Martin also worked at the gin. “We gritted our teeth and stayed with it,” says Angeline. In time — in spite of the elements and with great perseverance — the Cuba family grew and even prospered. Two daughters — Martha and Jacqueline — were born and Martin received the opportunity to accept a position with the Texas Ag Extension Service in Hockley County. It was a good life. With the girls grown up and married, she thought it would be fun to take up the art of overglaze painting on porcelain — or as it is more commonly

5

known, “china painting.” One of Angeline’s teacher friends taught her the fundamentals of china painting and it really struck a chord, appealing to Angeline’s desire to give something of beauty to the world. Not only did she become an avid china painter, she also began teaching china painting, achieving significant renown for her talent. It was a hobby that in time became a calling for Angeline. In the ensuing years, she would travel throughout the state and nation presenting workshops on the art form. In 1971, after 37 years of marriage, Angeline lost Martin to a heart attack. “I had to make another adjustment,” she says. “I had just finished South Plains College and decided to substitute teach.” For the next 13 years, Angeline forged ahead, became a grandmother many times over and met someone special, Rudolph Shockley. Angeline and Rudolph were married in 1984. “We enjoyed travelling, fishing, and spending time in Ruidoso,” says Angeline. “Rudolph and I both liked fishing. It was always enjoyable to see which one could ‘outfish’ the other.” In that regard, one of the most exciting times she can recall was the time she “outfished” Rudolph and caught an 18 3/4-inch rainbow trout. When Rudolph passed away in 1994, Angeline continued to teach china painting. For more than 40 years, it has remained her passion and helped to fill her desire to give something of beauty to the world. “I stay as busy as I can,” says Angeline. A daughter, Martha Olis, passed away in 2008 at age 72. Daughter Jacqueline Tomison, lives nearby in Levelland. Angeline also has five grandchildren, two greatgrandchildren, and eight great-greatgrandchildren. These days, she still finds time to paint and “make the best of everything I do,” she says. That includes tending to her miniature roses and providing water for the birds to drink in her garden. “I have so many memories,” says Angeline. “Thanks for the memories.” SPJST is greatly indebted to Angeline Shockley and others of her generation for the sacrifices and achievements that they have made over the years and for their commitment to our fraternal order,” says Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek. “May Sister Angeline be surrounded by the warmth of happy memories and secure in the knowledge that she has made this world a better place.” —SPJST—

prayer to start our day on the right foot. Minutes of the September meeting were read and approved with one correction. The secretary failed to include Sunny Kercho as one of the hostesses last month. My sincere apologies go out to her for the oversight. Treasurer Pauline Morbitzer gave the financial report and stated that cards had been sent to the families of Florence Greer and Margaret Laymance on the death of her husband, Don. Lucille Kret reported that her daughter, Linda Horner is still in rehab after surgery to her foot and Betty Loyd has a new great grandbaby. Mother and baby are doing just fine. President Marlene asked for suggestions for a caterer for the December catered meeting. Several names were given to the secretary after the meeting. Please plan to attend the November meeting when details will be discussed, and a decision will be made. Well . . . Halloween is over, Thanksgiving is approaching, and can you believe that Christmas time is so near? Gotta get busy! While we should share our blessings every day, it seems that come November, it is foremost in our minds. We will be addressing the needs of

those less fortunate. This month, we plan to share our bounty by bringing donations of toiletries for the Women’s Haven, food for St. Thomas’ Pantry, and clothes for John Peter Smith Hospital emergency room. November is also the month for our crafters who have been working on their projects this year bring their items to sell. I can hardly wait to see what we have to choose from. Last year, we had beautiful jewelry, holiday wreaths, and much more. Bring dollars, please! Hostesses for this day were Gloria Farek, Magda Kronenberger, Kathy Ormsbee, and Jacki Phillips. Thanks went out to them for the wonderful lunch. Also at this time, we need to recognize our favorite little pumpkin for bringing each person a handmade witch’s shoe filled with candy. Have you ever seen a barefooted witch flying on her broomstick! Well, there were some this Halloween. The birthday song was sung to Bill Campbell and Janet Basham. Janet shared a bit of her life and her journey back to her heritage. She is happy to once again be involved with the ladies of the Circle and have the opportunity to go back in time and remember her past. We really enjoyed her comments.

Joyce Tesar gave the October schedule for the hall. Lots of dances have been planned by outside groups, and everyone is invited to come and enjoy the evenings. Several announcements were made:

Helen and Albert Kubala have moved to the Pilot Point Nursing Center to be near their son. President Marlene’s sister volunteers at the Center and will keep us updated on how they are doing. Mary Ann Krivanek had tickets for sale for the Saint Thomas Building fundraiser. Contact her if you wish to purchase tickets. A card was passed around for Father Tom of Saint Paul’s Catholic Church in River Oaks. His health issues make it difficult for him to get around, and we send our prayers and good wishes to him. There were 21 door prizes given away this day. That means almost 50 percent of those who came went away with a gift . . . good golly, that was tremendous. We also had a raffle of a couple of plants, basket, and placemat set provided by Ms. Gloria. The blessings just flowed and flowed with lots

Last weekend, I got the chance to go to a San Antonio tradition where thousands of people dress up as zombies and walk downtown in a herd of the undead. I went with my best friend, whose mom is an art teacher. She made fake scars and put paint on them, then pasted them on our face. We tore up some old clothes, and put “blood” all over them, then we left. We had to stop at HEB and Whataburger, and people were giving us crazy looks. Finally, we got down-

town and started walking around. There were news reporters and many visitors from out of town to see us walk. There were movie star zombies, baby zombies, and even a Pac-Man zombie! After we walked around for a while and got some ice cream, we headed home. It was an exciting (and scary) day, and I will never forget that experience. Fraternally, Amanda Hoggard —SPJST—

District Two dances at State Fair

Dear Vestnik Readers, Back in March, I came up with a dream of thanking the District Two

Beseda Dancers and parents for the many hours and hard work they have put into keeping the Czech heritage alive by performing the beseda. I could not think of a more exciting place for these groups to dance than at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas.

Everyone got really excited, and we knew to fulfill the big plans, we’d all have to work together—all 19 families. First, how do you get a spot to perform at such a big function? I knew Bessie Petr and Lynda Novak would

help me out. And, yes, they did! These ladies got me all the information needed, and we were welcomed with open arms to be a part of the 17th Annual Heritage Festival at the State Fair of Texas. The District Two Beseda Dancers

District Two Beseda Dancers Perform at State Fair of Texas in Dallas

District Two Beseda Dancers were invited to dance on stage at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas on Sunday, October 7, 2012. The kids and their families worked hard to raise enough funds for everyone to have an expenses paid trip to the fair. The group stayed the night in DeSoto and had a great buffet-style dinner at Benavidez Restaurant.

On Sunday morning, it was all business with an 8 a.m. morning practice. Then, everyone headed to the fair to do their thing. We are very proud of our District Two Beseda Dancers. We currently have three circles and are working on a fourth. The youth really do seem to love dancing, and the dedication that they have to

had a wonderful and exciting experience performing on Sunday, October 7 on the beautiful outdoor stage next to the African American Museum. There were many different cultures represented. It was an awesome experience, and one that will never be forgotten. Even with the weather being very chilly, dancers, you performed excellent, and I am so proud of you! Arrangements were made with Bessie for each of us to have one of her delicious lunches. That sausage, potatoes, and sauerkraut boat was unbelievable, as were the kolaches. Delicious, delicious food. Thanks again. Thanks to many of you, members, family, friends, and businesses, the fundraiser we held in August was very successful. Our goal was met and performers and parents had a weekend to enjoy and remember. Many took the opportunity on Saturday to visit Dallas Cowboy Stadium or Texas Rangers Ballpark. Others enjoyed the fairgrounds. Then, there were those who enjoyed the hotel pool and family time. Everyone was treated to a nice meal at Benavides Mexican Restaurant. Following the meal, everyone went back to the hotel and enjoyed swimming. Once again to everyone who helped in any way by supporting District Two Beseda Dancers, we thank you! It is definitely a lifetime memory you made possible to many who had never been to the State Fair. There were several members not involved with beseda, that wanted to go to the Fair and asked about it being a District Two trip. Names started coming in, and before long, we had enough

members to fill a bus. The trip was open to all members—youth and adults. It was great to have several mother lodge members who enjoyed the trip with us. It was rather cool on Sunday, but we all had a great time. Thanks to those of you who joined in on the fun. New beseda groups will be forming in mid-November. District Five youth, parents, and youth club leaders visited the San Jacinto Battleship and Monument on September 29, 2012. Although the weather was not very cooperative, everyone had a great time touring the Battleship and Monument. During the tour of the Battleship,

we learned that the Battleship Texas is the only surviving battleship to have served in both World Wars. We were also shown what life was like for the American sailors and Marines who lived on the ship. After touring the Battleship, everyone looked for a dry place to sit and enjoyed a picnic lunch

and visit. We ended the day with a tour of the Monument and Museum and also a short film “Texas Forever! The Battle of San Jacinto.” Brenda Moyle Assistant Youth Counselor —SPJST—

V této části Texasu pravděpodobně více pršelo a příroda byla více zelená. Fotografie budovy a okolí ukazují různé zajímavosti. Hlavní novost z architektonického hlediska je umístění větších a menších kamenů, které slouží ke zpomalení vody při silném lijáku a proti odplavování půdy. TCGS presents “This Parade’s For You” this weekend

Be sure to be in attendance at the Caldwell Civic/Visitor Center, Caldwell, Texas, on Friday, November 9 and Saturday, November 10 when The Texas Czech Genealogical Society hosts a special weekend of tribute to all Czech Veterans, male and female, in all branches of service anywhere in the world. The festivities begin on Friday at 5:30 p.m. with a wine and cheese reception, followed by a delicious dinner. The lineup of speakers/entertainers for both days is top-notch, beginning on Friday evening when Dr. Mike Middleton takes the stage to present a special musical program, which is sure to trigger memories of years gone-by. Carroll Brincefield follows with a new and enlightening talk about Colonel Edward Kallus, a Caldwell native who survived the Bataan Death March, Camp O’Donnell, and Camp Cabanatuan. Saturday’s program will begin at 8 a.m. with registration, kolaches, coffee, and juice, giving everyone a chance to relax, visit with fellow Czechs, and prepare for a full, exciting day. No one can present our country’s colors better than the awesome A&M Color Guard. They will be on hand to open our Czech Veterans event promptly at 9 a.m. Colonel Jerry Curtis, who spent more than seven and one-half years in various North Vietnamese prison camps, will be our first speaker of the day. Colonel Curtis believes that the Lord miraculously brought him through those horrible days, if only to

tell his story. Ralph Mutchler served in the United States Army and worked as a DPS officer for more than 20 years. He has the unique hobby of restoring a M38 Willys Korean War Vintage Jeep and a 1970 M274A5 “Military Mule,” which will be on display. Once again, TCGS has translated and published another much-anticipated book, Czech Legionnaires, The Natives and Citizens of Vsetin County, 1914-1920, containing more than 1,000 surnames. This new publication will be available for the first time on Saturday, November 10. The book will be specially priced at $17 on Saturday, November 10. After that date, the book will sell for $21, plus $3 for shipping and handling. Everyone who has roots in Vsetin County will want to own this book, and you can save $7 by purchasing it at this event. Following a delicious lunch, our indoor Czech Veterans Parade will begin. All Veterans will want to participate when his or her branch of service song begins to play. The keynote speaker, Patrick Dewane, will take the stage immediately after the parade to present his inimitable and nationally acclaimed oneman show, “The Accidental Hero,” which is the story of his grandfather, Lieutenant Colonel Matt Kanop, who declared the liberation of the Czechs from the Nazi occupation in the village of Pilsen. This incredible story has been presented in many venues throughout the United States, but this will be the first performance in Texas. You simply do not want to miss it! Comments from audiences who have attended the show describe it as “unbelievable, chilling, and impossible to forget.” Following The Accidental Hero presentation, Patrick Janis will show, for the first time, a portion of the Czech Veteran Video, which features almost 100 of our own Czech Veterans. It will be an event filled with excitement, good food, mystery, entertainment, and Czech fellowship. We hope to see you there! TCGS  publishes Czech Legionnaires book

The Texas Czech Genealogical Society is proud to announce its latest book publication, Czech Legionnaires, The Natives and Citizens of Vsetin County, 1914 - 1920. With a little over 1,000 surnames within its 160 pages, you will definitely want to have a copy of this book in your personal research library if your ancestral roots are located in Vsetin County, Czech Republic. This book was authored by Dr. Ladislav Baletka and Zdenek Pomkla in 2001 after having spent several years compiling information on Czechoslovakian Legionnaires. Before Dr. Baletka’s death, he and Mr. Pomkla graciously granted permission to TCGS to have this important genealogical research book translated into English. Czechoslovakian Legions were military units and regiments which were organized during World War I in allied countries to serve as military power for Czechoslovakian resistance abroad. The Czech natives in France, perhaps 600 persons, entered the service of the French Legion, where they organized in the summer of 1914. The Italian Legion was organized mostly from former Austrian-Hungarian soldiers who were captured in Serbia or Italy. The largest part of the Czech foreign army was the Russian Legion, which was formed immediately at the beginning of World War I, under the leadership of Czechs and Slovaks who had settled in Russia.
