Lodge 47, Seaton plans Christmas party
Dear Vestnik Readers, On a beautiful and exceptionally warm Sunday in November, 28 members and four youth met for the regular monthly lodge meeting of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton. President Edwin Pechal called the meeting to order at 1 p.m. The flags were presented by youth members Chase Alexander and Seth Martinez. Members stood for a moment of silence in memory of member David Klinkovsky. May God bless his family
during this most difficult time. Roll call of officers, board members, and sales agents showed all present except Youth Leader Lynette Talasek, board member Calvin Skrabanek, and sales agent Dolores Skrabanek. A thank you note was read from the family of Matilda Sefcik for the peace lily sent in her memory. On the sick list is Johnny Herring. Take care, Johnny, and get well soon. Also, let’s keep State King Jerry Pechal in our prayers and thoughts. He had an auto accident on Friday night coming home from the football game. He was taken to the hospital and thankfully came home with only bruises and scratches. He will see his regular doctor for some testing this week. The October lodge minutes were accepted as read by Secretary Patsy Koslovsky. She also read the unofficial October board minutes. President Pechal asked all veterans present to stand and be recognized. The gentlemen thanked for their service to our country were Leroy Dana, Frank Klinkovsky, Edwin Marek, Woodrow Marek, Edward Mares, Otis Meier, and Edwin Vasicek. To all veterans, we say “thank you.” The hall floors look so nice and clean. President Pechal thanked those who came for the two days of moving the chairs and tables. President Pechal stated that we will be in our present lodge hall for 50 years in 2013. Plans are to celebrate this special occasion in conjunction with our annual June picnic will be discussed. I would like to thank the members of Lodge 47 for nominating me as the lodge fraternalist of the year for 2012. There are many who deserve this honor. I want to follow in their footsteps and enjoy helping in any way I can for the betterment of not only our lodge, but the entire SPJST Society. I am very blessed to have good health to keep me going and for the many, many friends I have within SPJST. Thank you, Lodge 47, for your vote of confidence. Dear Members, I would like to share a letter from VFW Post 9196 Commander John Multer that our youth club received recently.
Dear Members of the SPJST Youth Organization, I wanted to thank you for inviting the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9196 to your youth meeting on Sunday, October 14, 2012. We were honored to present the program on the flag and to explain what the Pledge of Allegiance means. I was very impressed with the youth members as they conducted their meeting. The training they are receiving in how to conduct a meeting is something very important. These youth are our future - future leaders, citizens, veterans, and voters. They will lead the nation. The skills they are learning now are skills that they can use throughout their lives. We compliment your organization for providing this training and expecting them to conduct a meeting properly. Thank you again for the invitation. We are available in the future for any additional patriotic programs. Sincerely, John Multer Commander VFW Post 9196 I am so proud of our youth club. • Letters to Bibbie •
This article is one of a series of “Letters to Bibbie,” written by Ivo Marek to his distant relative Vickie (Bibbie) Cooper of Granger, Texas. Ivo and his parents live in Choceň, Czech Republic. Ivo is an engineer by profession and an accomplished weaver and textile artist. In addition, his hobbies are gardening, cooking, and fine-tuning his English.
Dear Bibbie, I will talk you today about a moving love story from the beginning of 19th century. It happened in the army stronghold of Josefov in East Bohemia. At that time, Czech countries belonged to the Austrian Empire under a government of the Emperor Francis II. Katinka was a daughter of Prague’s burgher. It is not known the date of her birth. After the death of her parents, Katinka lived in Josefov with her sister, the wife of a quack and herbalist, Italian Jan Vidoni. Vidoni had a vehement and choleric character and strictly guarded the chaste of his sister-in-law, who was pretty and charmed Josefov’s youths and officers of the local army garrison with her grace. Katinka secretly met with an Italian first lieutenant Famagolli, with whom she fell very much in love. At the time, every Austrian officer was required to save a bail security for a wedding, lest the Austrian Army need to pay debts for him because of light officers’ life. The bail security was a rule that parents of bride had to pay. Katinka had no parents, and the first lieutenant Famagolli was poor. That is why Famagolli decided ask for Katinka’s hand and for bail money from her guardian Vidoni. Vidoni, however, denied the request to give the bail security. In this impasse, the lovers decided to finish their lives together. Katinka then used an opportunity of the absence of her brother-in-law, to take poison and wait

to meet her lover at the set hour in a store. He was not far away, but he could not come at the appointed time, because the inspector general paid him an unexpected visit. Katinka did not wait for her lover to take the poison, but with horrible pains, died 10 July 1827. Famagolli came on rendezvous after a half-hour delay, but when he found Katinka dead, he vanished from the stronghold and never again showed up in Josefov.
enna. Burial was done so ostentatiously, as leaders of the stronghold in Josefov did not watch either. That is all for today. Yours faithfully, Ivo —SPJST—

Burial of Katinka Betsageova took place in the middle of the night. Officers carried the dead body of Katinka by light of torches. The funeral procession went to the end of newly founded park, where she was buried without church ceremonies. The grave of Katinka lies outside of the cemetery in Josefov’s park. The leader of the stronghold allowed a small monument to be built on the grave of Katinka so that officers would be reminded that they should not choose a poor bride whose family is not able to pay a bail security. The same story yet repeated itself 72 years later. The beautiful Josefinka Kostelecka also died from unhappy love after drinking poison on the stairs of shop in the same house where Katinka died. This incident about Josefinka was talked about even in Vi-

Czech city of Pilsen was site of World War II bombing raid by Rev. Bob Uzzel Lodge 6, Cottonwood
Since the death of Senator George McGovern at the age of 90 at a Sioux Falls, South Dakota, hospice on October 21, 2012, much attention has been given to his long life and career, including his military service during World War II. Already a private pilot, McGovern volunteered for the Army Air Corps soon after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. However, there were not enough airfields or training planes to accommodate him until 1943. He married Eleanor Stegeberg on October 31 of that year and arrived in Italy shortly afterward. Italy was his base for the 35 missions he flew in the B-24 Liberator christened the Dakota Queen after his new bride. On December 20, 1944, he learned that the target for his bombing raid was the Škoda works in the Czech city of Pilsen, which was heavily defended because it was a principal manufacturer of arms for the Germans. Pilsen, or Plzeň, is a city in western Bohemia and now the fourth most populous city in the Czech Republic. It is located about 90 km west of Prague at the confluence of four rivers—the Radbuza, the Mže, the Úhlava, and the Úslava—which form the Berounka River. The city is known worldwide for Pilsner beer. Following Czechoslovak independence from Austria-Hungary in 1918 the German-speaking minority in the region hoped to be united with Austria and were unhappy at being included in Czechoslovakia. Many allied themselves to the Nazi cause after 1933, in hopes that perhaps Adolf Hitler might be able to unite them with their German-speaking neighbors. During the Nazi occupation from 1939 to 1945 the Škoda Works in Pilsen was forced to provide armaments for the Wehrmacht. In January 1942, over 2,000 Jewish inhabitants, most of Pilsen's Jewish population, were deported to the Nazi extermination camps as Terezin. According to Stephen E. Ambrose’s 2001 book The Wild Blue: The Men and Boys Who Flew the B-24s over Germany, on December 20, 1944, an hour away from the Škoda Works,
Dakota Queen’s Number two engine (inboard on the left wing) quit. With only three engines functioning, McGovern had to struggle to keep up with the formation. He told his co-pilot Bill Rounds: “So we’re minus an engine. Let’s keep going.” They did. Heading over Pilsen and approaching the drop point, flak hit the plane, causing number three engine to begin throwing oil and smoking badly. As Dakota Queen lost altitude, the pilot ordered everything loose thrown out of the plane to lighten it up and gave any crew member who wished to bail out the opportunity to do so. None did. They made an emergency landing on Vis, a fifty-eight-square-mile mountainous island forty miles off the Dalmatian coast. With both McGovern and Rounds on the controls and the two good engines overtaxed, the plane was bought in as slow as possible without stalling. They pressed the breaks as hard as possible. They wheeled off at the very end of the runway, going pretty fast. Eventually, they bogged down in the wet clay and stopped. The crew piled out of the plane. Some of them threw themselves on the ground and kissed it. McGovern and Rounds embraced. On May 6, 1945, near the end of the war, Plzeň was liberated from Nazi Germany by the 16th Armored Division of General Patton's 3rd Army. Also participating in the liberation of the city were elements of the 97th and 2nd Infantry Divisions. Other Third Army units liberated major portions of Western Bohemia. The rest of Czechoslovakia was liberated from German control by the Soviet Red Army. Elements of Third Army, as well as units from the First Army, remained in Pilsen until late November 1945, assisting the Czechs with re-building from the war. After seizing power in 1948, the Communists undertook a systematic campaign to suppress all acknowledgement of the U.S. Army's role in liberating the city and Western Bohemia. This continued until the Velvet Revolution of 1989 when the

Communists were removed from power. Since 1990, the city of Pilsen has organized the annual Liberation Festival, taking place in May, which has already become a local tradition. On May 13, 2009, a memorial dedicated to the Czechoslovak soldiers who fought on the western front was unveiled on Husova Street by officials from the Pilsen Regional Authority, the City of Pilsen, and Military Car Club Pilsen. Honored guests included Czech and American war veterans, officials from Czech Armed Forces, and dozens of Pilsen residents. —SPJST—
