A Bountiful Thanksgiving

Here we are – ready to eat turkey – seems like we just did that! This year has gone by so fast we have hardly had time to stop and think of every day since last Thanksgiving. Busy with “life” – so are we busy just being busy – or are we taking time to thank God for each day for the gifts He has blessed us with? Whenever I hear the word “bounty” or “bountiful,” I seem to always think of plenty – or an abundance of. I decided to look up the correct definition in the dictionary. I was on the right track – these definitions are listed . . . “bountiful” – abundant . . . “bounty” – generous gift or generosity in giving. Will you be bountiful in thanking God for all blessings and gifts? And, what about thanking your family for what they have done for you and what they mean to you. Don’t stop there – so many people we are in contact with daily, weekly, monthly . . . they have an impact on you – and you have an impact on them. We should be thankful – and because we’re thankful for what we have been given – we should want to give to others. Does that thought sound like fraternalism to you? It does to me. Bountiful also makes me think of a cornucopia. Most homes have one on their Thanksgiving table – just totally overflowing. It can be filled with anything – usually vegetables, fruit, candy, nuts – even colored ornaments during the Christmas season. If only

I actually started thinking about “bounty” when we were in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, during the middle of O c t o b e r. Mike and I were on a bay cruise where they were catching lobster – and yes – we had lobster for dinner – and yes – we did give thanks! On that cruise, we saw the tall ship HMS Bounty . . . she was the “star” of Mutiny on the Bounty and Pirates of the Caribbean. All of us were in awe of seeing the “real” ship from these movies – as well as many other movies. Little did we know that would be the last time most people would see her. Just a few days later, she was going to set sail for Galveston to be moored alongside the tall ship Elissa. She never made it to Galveston. If you keep up with the news you know the ship sailed with 16 . . . there were 14 survivors when the storm Sandy caused the horrible disaster off the North Carolina coast. Later, they recovered the body of the 15th person – the captain has not been found, and the ship sank. I will always think of this tall ship when I hear the word “bounty.” We never know when the last time to see someone or something might be. Regrets are not good – rarely do we get “do-overs.” I saw the 14 survivors giving an in-

SPJST Agents Encouraged to Attend Lodge Holiday Parties and Meetings Here we are! The holiday season is upon us. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and a new year are fast approaching. If you are an SPJST sales agent, you are encouraged to attend your local lodge holiday parties and meetings. Yearend lodge activities and member attendance will increase these next few weeks. Take the time to attend and support your local lodge and renew those old acquaintances or begin new ones. Call and be in touch with the local lodge officers. Let them know how much you appreciate their service to the lodge members. This is the time to give thanks and reflect on the many bless-

ings we have received this year and throughout the many years.

“Virtue is its own reward. There’s a pleasure in doing good that sufficiently pays itself.”

Believe in the Value of What You Do It’s too bad we can’t all read our obituaries and determine how other people view our life. There is at least one exception to this and that is Alfred Nobel. Nobel was the wealthy Swedish businessman who established the

Nobel Prize. He had invented dynamite and became one of the world’s largest producers of explosives. When his brother died in a test of explosives, a newspaper mistakenly printed Alfred’s obituary instead of his brother’s. It read: “The Merchant of Death is dead . . . Dr. Alfred Nobel, who became rich by finding ways to kill more people faster than ever before, died yesterday.” When Alfred read it and saw that his life amounted to so much destruction and killing, he was devastated. He decided to do something to benefit humanity, and he used his fortune to establish the Nobel Prize for people who do good in the world. As a fraternal insurance professional, you are doing good in the world and in your community. Believe in the

value of our products and services for your prospects and clients. Think greatly of your function as a service to others.

Lodge 15 Buckholts welcomes guest speaker

The November 2012 meeting of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts was called to order by President Doug Williams at 5 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by guest Dirk Dyk-

stra followed by a moment of silence in memory of our departed members. Veterans Day was observed today. We especially want to remember our Veterans who have served our country in the past as well as the present. We want to especially honor our longtime, faithful member Frank Tomascik, Sr. who served his country during World War II. He was in the 1st Cavalry Division before it was mechanized. He served in North Africa under General Patton. Later, he was in Italy where he directed artillery fire from the Leaning Tower of Pisa. He was a forward observer and had no one with him, and all he had for protection was a Colt 45 pistol. He tells of one of his experiences when one night he spread out his bedroll on the ground. Later when he awoke, he was covered with snow. He was overseas for 31 months. We have another member we wanted to honor, but he was unable to attend the meeting - A.W. Zajicek. He served on the board of school trustees for 42 years. That is a lot of years which involved a lot of his time and

Granddaughter Graduates from Waco HS With the ending of this school year, our family, like many others, proudly celebrated the graduation of a family member. In the case of Debra and me, it was our granddaughter, Alicia Denise Bass, who was part of the Class of 2012 of my alma mater Waco High School. Alicia, who was born in Houston on September 14, 1993, is the second of three children of our younger daughter JoAnna Bass-Parker and her husband Charles Parker. She is a ninth-generation descendant from an African named Gobi. She grew up in Waco. Her older brother, Dominique Bass-Parker, graduated from Waco High in 2011. Her younger brother, Charles Davion Bass-Parker, currently attends school in Cedar Hill, where the Parker family now lives. Alicia has always enjoyed going to school and participating in sports. At Waco High, she took college preparatory classes through the AVID program and graduated with a 3.6 grade point average. She participated in volleyball and basketball and

served as an athletic trainer. She enjoys reading and music and is a selftaught hair stylist. She has also dabbled in dress design. She has done volunteer work in various venues. Alicia, who has been accepted at Navarro College for the fall semester, plans to major in criminal justice and minor in sociology. She wants to work in the areas of social work and forensics. She eventually hopes to obtain a doctorate in criminal justice. Solving crimes and helping others is what she wants to do. Her parents and grandparents have always taught her that she can make a difference, and she is determined to do this. On Saturday June 2, Debra and I joined family members at Alicia’s graduation ceremony at Baylor University’s Ferrell Center, the site of the 1995 graduation in which both our older daughter Ericha Bass-Prox and I received degrees. This year’s ceremony was followed by dinner at Waco’s Summer Palace. Our family is very proud of Alicia in her achievement of this milestone and wish her God’s richest blessings as she embarks on the next chapter of her life. efforts to keep the school in good standing. Our school board does not get the recognition and appreciation that it deserves for all it does. President Williams greeted everyone and thanked all for attending. We were few in number, partly due to illness. Lamerle Zajicek just returned home from the hospital today. We hope that she continues to feel better. We had as guest Dirk Dykstra, who is superintendent at Buckholts ISD. He has been there since February, but most of us had not had the opportunity to meet him. It was nice meeting him, and we enjoyed having him. The secretary and treasurer each gave their reports; both were approved as read. Under new business, we want to remind everyone that we will elect officers at the December meeting. So everyone, try to be at that meeting. Regina Peevey and Lamerle Zajicek have come up with some ideas to improve the appearance of the front entrance of the building, but since Lamerle could not be with us, we will plan on that at the next meeting. President Williams asked Superintendent Dykstra if he would like to bring us up-to-date on the school happenings; sounds like a lot of improvements have taken place. Due to the cut back in funding, a few of the teacher positions had to be eliminated, but they have adjusted to that and are doing well. More students are now taking part in sports events. Buckholts is going to have a baseball team this year. They have done real well with their new football coach. In fact, they will be in the playoffs this week. He said one of the school’s worst problems is finding housing for teachers. There is just none available close by. Teachers have so far to drive having to live so far away. He said they really appreciated all the school transfer students. Sandie Fischer made the motion that we adjourn, seconded by Martha Glaser. Motion carried. Lots of nice door prizes were awarded followed by a delicious meal that was enjoyed by all. Next Meeting—December 10 The next meeting will be on December 10 at 5 p.m. I hope you can be there. Dear Readers, SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone held its meeting on Monday, November 12, 2012. There were 13 adults present. President Daniel Wilde called the meeting to order about 7:10 p.m. We recited the Pledge of Allegiance and remained standing for a moment of silence in honor of any deceased or sick members. The meeting continued with all reports given and being approved. We discussed the fraternalist of the year award, and Vice President Shirley Hoelscher was nominated. Congratulations, Shirley. Under old business, we discussed the fact that there is a lot of work that needs to be done around the hall. If we had enough help, some of this work could be done by members of the lodge, but some of it will be hired out. But, if there is any of you able-bodied members out there who thinks they might be of some help, please call Daniel Wilde or Wilbert Mikeska and let them know. Grandson Graduates from ATI

On FriNoday vember 2, 2012, our grandson Dominique B a s s Parker graduated from ATI Training Center, receiving a certificate as an automotive service technician. The ceremony was held at Double Tree by Hilton at 8250 North Central Expressway in Dallas. For more than three decades, ATI Schools and Colleges have operated schools throughout Texas, Florida, New Mexico, Arizona, and Oklahoma with the primary objective of preparing its graduates for rewarding careers in such fields as health care, personal fitness and wellness, business technology, information technology, automotive repair, air conditioning and refrigeration repair, and welding. Dominique Bass-Parker was born on September 4, 1991, in Waco, the son of Charles and Joanna Bass Parker. He is the grandson of Debra Bass Uzzel; the great-grandson of Aldessa Henry Bass; the great-greatgrandson of Gladys Durham Henry; the great-great-great grandson of Willie Anderson Durham; the greatgreat-great-great grandson of Rance Durham; the great-great-great-greatgreat-grandson of Allen Durham; and the great-great-great-great-greatgreat grandson of the African Gobi. Dominique’s first Christmas oc-

curred on December 25, 1991. His gifts included a tee-shirt containing the words “ M y Granddaddy is a S h r i n e r. ” Thus began a family tradition. Throughout the years, he and other grandchildren have worn such shirts when I have taken them to the Shrine Circus. Dominique grew up primarily in Waco, living briefly in Houston, Mesquite, and Cedar Hill. He graduated from Waco High School (my alma mater) in 2011. He now lives in Cedar Hill with his parents, his sister Alicia, and his brother Daveon. Although Dominique’s mother did not name him after anyone, I once took him to the Dominican Priory on the campus of the University of Dallas, where one of the Dominican Fathers was kind enough to tell him about Saint Dominique Guzman. I hope and pray that he will cherish this experience all of his life. Dominique’s plans include working as an automotive service technician, earning a business degree, and owning his own repair shop. Debra and I are proud of his achievements and pray that God will bless and guide him in all of his future endeavors. Dominique is a member of SPJST Lodge 66, Waco. —SPJST—

Lodge 187 Round Rock recognizes Veterans

We started the meeting with entertainment from Jennave Fuchs. Since it was Veterans Day, she discussed Wilford Fuchs’ family who was in the military and also about Wilford’s military experience in the Army Air Force (as it was called then). While we all gave thank yous and blessings to all the other Veterans in our lodge, we wanted to point out our oldest and still very proud Veteran—Wilford Fuchs who is 91 years young. We had great surprise guests—Jesse and Linda Pospisil. Jesse mentioned how well SPJST is doing and that there is an overall increase in insurance sales. He continued by mentioning the new 10-Year Annuity. Jesse ended with telling us just how wonderful Rubie Volek is. As a sales agent, Rubie was in the “top five” in our district. We already knew that she is so wonderful, but now there is another reason added to her list. We are so proud to have her in our lodge! Joann Oman started the discussion on the incentive program and for us to only write up our volunteer hours/activities from July to December. She also indicated that it would be helpful to add notes to the hours that we list on the form. Please return the form/s back to Joann at the December meeting. Next, we went over the donations that should be considered. So far, there are Hutto Food Pantry, Rescue Animals and service dogs, Taylor Senior Center, St. John’s Vianney Social Ministry, and clothes to the schools. Please have other places in mind if you are not happy with the ones listed so we can vote on them at the December meeting. Birthdays for this month are Gladys Nelson on the 28th, Linda Johnson on the 22nd, and Eldon Lange on the 20th. We ended our meeting with a juicy turkey and ham dinner. Thank you to all!

Next Meeting—December 9 December 9 will be the next meeting and our Christmas fajita dinner. All are to bring a dessert or a salad. Also, please bring two or more cans of food for the local food pantry. Please check for expired dates. We will have a white elephant gift exchange. Please bring a gift between $9 to $11. Blessings to all, Jennifer McCarthy, Reporter —SPJST—

Rain of Leaves By d.knape Lodge 187, Round Rock

Leaves come down like rain in the October woods brightly colored specks of gold and orange and yellow fall like sparkling raindrops

The first touch of cold has shaken the limbs moved them just enough to start the release of leaves and so the rain begins all coming down like colorful confetti coating the trails and pathways in fanciful mosaics

Leaves tumble and twirl coming down from great heights you can see them falling feel them on your face smell them in the air they signal a new season

Our Defecit

By d.knape Lodge 187, Round Rock

Somehow we softened you can bet our lives reclined on the internet

The thing that gets us so upset the country’s broke and deep in debt

Only one thing we can suggest let’s go to work work up a sweat

Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) Hosts Successful “Czech Veterans, This Parade’s For You The festivities began on Friday evening, November 9, 2012, at 5:30 p.m. with a wine and cheese reception for Czech Veterans in the Caldwell Civic Center.

Dr. Mike Middleton

Following a delicious dinner, toes tapped and smiles spread as awardwinning performer Dr. Mike Middleton of Temple took the stage. The joyful sounds from his accordion brought back memories of old. A man of numerous talents, Dr. Middleton is the Director of Nuclear Medicine and an Associate Professor of Radiology at Scott and White Clinic/Texas A&M Health Science Center in Temple. Dr. Middleton’s musical accordion talents were a real crowd pleaser, and his special renditions and arrangements of “Amazing Grace,” “Ghost Riders in the Sky,” and others, including “Beer Barrel Polka,” were among the favorites. “Can you play all night?” was one of many remarks made during the standing ovation Dr. Middleton received at the close of his program. The presentation of the evening was brought by Caldwell resident and Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) member Carroll Brincefield. With Carroll’s deep interest in U n i t e d States Military history, it was not surprising that she de- Carroll Brincefield veloped a presentation especially for the Czech Veterans event. The evening’s presentation was extra special as it centered around one of Caldwell’s natives, Colonel Edward Kallus.

By Nancy Machu • SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor

Colonel Kallus survived the Bataan Death March, Camp O’Donnell and Camp Cabanatuan. Colonel Kallus was a unique Czech-American who loved this country, defending it in both World War I and World War II. Many items from the Colonel’s personal collection of military memorabilia, including his original military documents, are on display at TCGS Czech Veterans’ Military Museum and Czech Veterans’ Wall of Honor, located downstairs in the SPJST Home Office at 520 North Main in Temple. Of course, every Czech event has to begin with kolaches, coffee, and juice, and “This Parade’s For You” began in just that manner on Saturday morning. 8 a.m. was the magic hour for registration and morning refreshments before TCGS President Charlene Hurta officially opened the day’s event with the awesome Texas A&M Color Guard which presented our country’s colors.

play. Ralph relayed many tales of his military service years. At the conclusion of his presentation, a number of the men in attendance cornered Ralph Mutchler him at his “military mule” to learn more about the vehicle. Ralph is a resident of Caldwell, Texas. The Czech Veterans’ Indoor Parade followed a delicious barbecue lunch. A special blessing was had by all who watched the members of Cub Scout Pack 1814 as they carried out their special duty of the day. Eight members of the Pack proudly carried their assigned military flags, leading the Czech Veterans’ Parade with the United States flag. As each scout passed by, carrying a flag from a branch of the service, each veteran fell in behind his or her respective flag and marched around the meeting room while military music played.

The multimedia show offered enthralling, humorous, and heartwarming tales of miraculous escapes and astonishing coincidences as it traced Patrick Dewane the life and World War II journey of Patrick’s grandfather, Matt Konop. We learned of his grandfather’s connection to Texas and how the Czechs in Czechoslovakia could not believe their good fortune of being liberated by Matt’s division. In return, the Czechs made Matt Konop a folk hero with banners in Czech saying, “Matt Konop, we are liberated by one of our own!” The third standing ovation of the day was given to Patrick Dewane.

Colonel Curtis and wife Terry

While flying a Combat Search and Rescue Mission in North Vietnam on September 20, 1965, in an attempt to rescue a F-105 pilot, Colonel Jerry Curtis’ own helicopter was shot down. In the first presentation of the day, Colonel Curtis told of how he was interned in various North Vietnamese prisons over a period of 7 1/2 years. Today, Colonel Curtis believes the Lord miraculously brought him through those horrible days so he could tell his story. At the close of his presentation, he received a much deserved standing ovation. After graduating from Texas A&M University, serving in the US Army, and working as a DPS officer for 20plus years, Ralph Mutchler began a unique hobby. He loves getting greasy while restoring a M38 Willys Korean War Vintage Jeep and a 1970 M274A5 “Military Mule,” which was on dis-

Bringing his one-man performance to Texas for the first time was Patrick Dewane of Minnesota. The Accidental Hero has been a hit in many areas across the United States. Like so many of us have discovered, trying to learn what loved ones went through during World War II is next to impossible. Patrick found himself walking in those same shoes until he received an unexpected Christmas gift. Opening it, he found something he never would have guessed. His gift was something he had wanted and sought to obtain since boyhood.

A day filled with excitement, good food, mystery, entertainment and most of all, Czech fellowship, came to a close around 4 p.m. We anxiously look forward to our next event, Digging For Gold, which will again be held at the Caldwell Civic/Visitors Center on January 26, 2013. Be sure to mark your calendar for this event as you will not want to miss our special guest speaker, Jan Dus from the Czech Republic. —SPJST—

Expression of Sympathy

SPJST Lodge 9, Snook members and officers would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of MOODY FAUST. Funeral services for longtime Snook civic leader and former Burleson County Pct. 2 Constable, Moody Ray Faust, 84, of Snook, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, October 28, 2012, at Snook Brethren Church with Reverend Joseph J. Moody Faust Polasek officiating. Interment followed in Snook Cemetery. Visitation was from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, October 27 with the family present at Strickland Funeral Home in Somerville. Mr. Faust died Wednesday, October 24 in College Station. He was born November 11, 1927, in the New Tabor community, the son of Frank and Frances (Maresh) Faust. He was the fourth child of eight children. He first attended school at Liberty School in Cooks Point until his family moved to the Brazos Bottom in 1939 to the then Joe Surovik farm. He then went to school in Snook where he completed the 10th grade. Moody was needed at home to help with farming chores. The only time he was able to go to school was when it rained or it was too wet to work the land in wintertime. At those times, they had to walk through muddy fields three to four miles to catch the bus. Since he was not going regularly to school, he fell behind in his lessons and was held back so he decided to quit school. After some time, he got a job as a ranch hand (better known as a cowboy) with Smith Brothers in the Brazos Bottom. That was the job he seemed to love the most – working at different ranches with cattle. On February 19, 1953, he married Lydia Mae Vajdak at Caldwell Brethren parsonage. Reverend Henry Beseda, Sr. was pastor. They lived on the Smith Ranch for about two years. They then moved to Clay where he worked for his fatherin-law Henry Vajdak for two years. They decided to buy a place of their own in Snook where they resided for 55 years. During this time, Moody farmed

cotton and grew feed crops. After losing his crops to flooding several times, he went back to raising cattle and building fences for people. He also spent several years working for Charlie Sebesta at his furniture store and helped him tend to his cattle operation. Moody always worked hard at whatever he did. He loved his children and grandchildren. He loved to take them to the pasture to feed the cattle or go fishing in the ponds. There was always a time for fun and a little mischief when Moody was with his grandchildren. His family was important to him, and he always encouraged his children to work hard at whatever they were involved in. In 1999, Moody and Lydia Mae were crowned King and Queen of the Kolache Festival, and he was selected Senior Citizen of Burleson County in 2001. He served several years as the City Marshall when Snook was organized as a city and served on the city council as alderman from 1994 to 1998. He was Burleson County Constable for Precinct 2 for 16 years. Moody was a member of SPJST Lodge 9, Snook for the majority of his life and was a founding member of Snook Volunteer Fire Department. Moody was baptized on January 28, 1928, at New Tabor Brethren Church by Reverend Motycka. He was confirmed in 1946 at Snook Brethren Church. He was faithful in the worship of his Lord. He was very involved in his church, having served as an elder for many years. Not only did he attend Sunday school regularly, he also taught Sunday school classes. He taught his children that Sunday was the Lord’s Day and they were to respect their time for worshiping. Moody was preceded in death by his parents; son Bobby Ray; infant son Moody John; brothers Franklin, Marvin, Alvin, Ed Louis, and Leo; and sister Dorothy Wilha. Survivors include his wife of 59 years Lydia Faust of Snook; daughter Melinda and husband Mike Wilson of Centerville; and sons Bruce and wife Tammy Faust and James and wife Stefani Faust, all of Snook; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister Judy Pittenger of Graham, Washington; sisters-in-law Margie Faust and Nancy Faust, both of Somerville, and Tammy Faust; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives. Our club will truly make a difference in the lives of 60 children around the world. Our charity donations we have been collecting over the past few months will be sent to families for the holiday season. We called this project “Operation Christmas Child.” We also voted to send $50 to Twin City Mission to help with feeding the needy for Thanksgiving. Also we will

Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club Shares Fall Activities

Dear Readers, Our October meeting was held Saturday, October 27, 2012, at the Krajca house in Telico. Devin, Kim, and Darren hosted this fun evening for the youth, and we appreciate their hospitality. Hot dogs were served, and everyone enjoyed Devin’s spooky cupcakes!

Our garage sale was a huge success—thanks to all of you who donated items, helped set-up; and work it on Saturday, October 20. The proceeds will go toward our charities as well as to help provide transportation to camp next summer. Don’t forget to collect those socks for the nursing home. Tori and Dustin

Motley’s family is coordinating the fall charity project. If you have questions or would like to donate socks, please give me a call (469) 337-2284. We’ve headed into the holiday season and busy month of November. Our youth will help the adult lodge bake strudels on November 18. If anyone would like an apple strudel for

the holidays, call Margaret Krajca (972) 878-6149 or Betty Macalik (972) 878-7719. I hope to see ya’ll then! Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! Fraternally, Rita Holland Youth Leader —SPJST—

Lodge 202 Jourdanton youth advances to regional tourney

While playing soccer on an adult coed team, I was asked if I wanted to play for a youth league team. Three guys that I played soccer with a few years ago were on the team so I thought it might be fun to play another season with them. The team was based out of Spring Branch, 30 miles north of San Antonio, but they said we could just hit practice once a week and many of the games were in San Antonio. As it turns out, we were able to

pull together as a team fairly quickly. We played every team twice, with only the second meeting counting towards the standings. Last Saturday was our final game of the season. We knew if we won the game, we would advance to the playoffs. We led at half 1-0, but the other team scored just minutes into the second half. We continued to play aggressively and with about 15 minutes left in the game, we regained the lead. A few minutes later, we added another goal to seal the deal with a 3-1 win and a final season record of 4-0. We will be playing in the Western District regional tournament the first weekend in December in Brownsville. Hopefully, we can advance to the state finals, which conveniently will be held in San Antonio the following weekend. Wish us luck! Fraternally, Lane Hoggard District Seven King —SPJST—

Wait a minute, there are only two of us! Where did the third one come from? Don’t worry, there aren’t three of us. Amanda joined us in her play costume for this picture. We were there opening night to support her acting debut in the Bradley Middle School

theater program. The evening was a compilation of comedy short stories, which culminated in the final act with “Check Please” – a series of bad first dates. Amanda was dressed as a guy and revealed that she was an actress who was trying to get into character for a play that she was cast in. Her “date” was not impressed and threw a glass of water on her to close the scene. Amanda and all of the actors did a great job, and it was an evening we enjoyed with our grandparents, Lloyd and Bettie House, who had joined us for the show. Amanda was surprised when we presented her with a bouquet of flowers after the show. Fraternally, Sammy Hoggard —SPJST—

• Letters to Bibbie •

This article is one of a series of “Letters to Bibbie,” written by Ivo Marek to his distant relative Vickie (Bibbie) Cooper of Granger, Texas. Ivo and his parents live in Choceň, Czech Republic. Ivo is an engineer by profession and an accomplished weaver and textile artist. In addition, his hobbies are gardening, cooking, and fine-tuning his English.

Dear Bibbie, Today I write to you about the methanol scandal in the Czech Republic. It is currently a topic with a heavy and sad theme, because it concerns the health and lives of frustrated citizens of our country. Neither I, nor my parents had in the beginning of September experienced any one with methanol poisoning. We take it as a big decadence and degradation of the level of life in our country. The cause of the methanol tragedies was a desire of some immoral entrepreneurs to get rich. Poisonous methanol is a cheaper alcohol then ethanol. That is why the forgers illegally stirred cheaper methanol with more expensive ethanol in consumption spirits (liquors).

for alcoholic beverage production, as an addition to fuel, and as an antidote against methanol poisoning. The price of consumption alcohol (80 volume percent, including taxes) is approximately 344 CZK/1 liter or $17.2 US per liter. Liquors are sweet alcoholic beverages, containing 20 to 40 percent ethanol. Brandy (brandy and schnapps) is formed by distillation of fermented crushed fruit containing 36 to 50 percent of ethanol; examples: plums, apples, apricots and other fruits; vodka, whiskey (from grain); and rum (from fermented cane molasses). Tuzemak is produced from a cold potato spirit and rum essence. Distilleries in the Czech Republic: Distillery Jan Becher (Becherovka); Distillery Drak (Tuzemak); Distillery R. Jelinek (Slivovice).

issued a partial ban on the sale, offering, or distribution of alcohol beverages with alcohol content of 20 percent volume or more. In September, police charged 39 people and announced that the methanol probably came mostly from the warehouse of the company in Opava that produces fluid to wash cars. The two main suspects detained were from town Karvina: Fian, trader and Křepela, entrepreneur who mixed the “death cocktail.” They face a punishment of prison from 12 to 20 years to life. Spirit-counterfeiters even falsified labels and revenue stamps on bottles. From the time of poisoning, 26 people have died and dozens more have been hospitalized in the Czech Republic; many suffered permanent damage of sight. In “Tuzemák” from the distill-

Methanol was not imported into Czech Republic until 2010 because methanol was not permitted in industrial production, especially for anti-freeze mixtures into sprays of glass in automobiles in Czech Republic. The EU permitted methanol use in 2010; the Czech Republic did the same. Since this time (2010), it is permitted to use methanol in antifreeze mixtures and liquid sprays of glass in automobiles in Czech Republic. Methanol poisonings began in the town Havířov on September 9, 2012, with the death of two people. The government set up a task force, and on September 14, the Health Department

Methanol (methyl alcohol) is a colorless, alcoholic-smelling liquid, miscible with water, is combustible, and highly toxic. It cannot be differentiated from ethanol by taste, smell, or sight, so laboratory tests use gas chromatography to determine its composition. Its poisonous break-down produces formaldehyde and formic acid that can damage the central nervous system, the retina, and can cause blindness and coma. First aid is to drink 2 dcl = 0.35 pt = 1.4 gills of quality 40 percent alcohol (e.g. vodka), and then find a doctor. Ethanol or antidote fomepizol
