Christmas Is Coming!
Float No. 1 made its Christmas season debut at the Tomball Holiday
Parade on Saturday, November 17. Riding the float were members of Lodge 88, Houston. An estimated 35,000 people lined the streets of Tomball, Texas, on a bright, pleasant, sunny morning. Lodge 88 Youth Club hosted the float. After the parade, members enjoyed lunch at a local restaurant. David and I enjoyed the parade and the social with everyone. Thanks, Lodge 88 Youth Club! Since then, Float No. 2 has been completed and is ready for the Christmas parades. See the list of parades that our floats will be visiting and promoting SPJST at this Christmas season. Parades are also posted on our SPJST Facebook page.

Ennis Sewing Circle
Ennis Sewing Circle met on November 8, 2012. Ann Clagett, Dorothy Prachyl, Eleanora Pelzel, and I arrived at 8 a.m. We started stretching the Junior Sokol Polka Festival 2013 quilt. It is really pretty. We also set up the tables and chairs, and Ann decorated all the tables in the Thanksgiving theme. Ann always does such a good job. Thank you so much. The quilters started arriving - Irene Prachyl, Evila Cervantes, Victoria Vlk, Georgia Holy, Martha Ritchey, Dorothy J. Kudrna, and Pat Fowler. We appreciated you coming early to help quilt. By lunchtime, we had 22 members and three guests - all their names starting with the letter J - Joe, Jerry, and Julius. President Dorothy led us in prayer, and she remembered all our Veterans— especially those three who were with us - the three Js. We all enjoyed a delicious lunch of turkey, ham, dress-

ing, gravy, and all the other delicious dishes. Thank you to everyone, and thank you to the set up and clean up crew. After lunch, quilters returned to quilting, and President Dorothy called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and a moment of silence was held for Viola Dlabaj, Thelma Pruitt, Mildred Novy Jordan, and all our deceased Veterans. Secretary Margaret Martinek read the minutes of the last meeting; they were approved as read. Treasurer Dorothy Bobalek was not present so we had no report from her. Sunshine Lady Eleanora announced our November birthday celebrants — Willy Matus and Martha Ritchey. “Happy Birthday” was sung to them. Eleanora had a card for all to sign for member Barbara Phipps who was in the hospital, and one for former member Emily Harrison, who is residing at a nursing home. We wish them both good health for the coming holidays. Ann Clagett read a thank you note from Martha Ritchey for us remembering the passing of her mother Louise Haba. Quilt scheduler Pat announced that we will not quilt in December. We have our Christmas party. In January and February 2013, we will quilt for Pat and Ann. I didn’t get whose quilt will be first. Thank you went out to Willy Matus and Libbie Vrla for donating dinner and dessert plates. We have added one more member to our Christmas shut-in list - Libbie Elsik. I am sorry that I missed her last month. President Dorothy announced that we will be collecting 2013 dues next month. We are also selling chances on our Christmas quilt so bring cash to pay your dues and to buy lots of chances. The quilt is really pretty. Irene Prachyl thanked all who brought items for the Helping Hands food pantry. The donations are most appreciative. The Christmas party was discussed. We will meet around 10 a.m. on December 13. Bring your gift for $10 with your name on it. We will have no door prize and no little gifts - just your Christmas gift. We will have turkey, dressing, gravy, and all the other wonderful dishes you bring. It was so good to see Ella Mae and Jerry Zmolek. We have missed you. I want to send a special thank you to Jerry for getting the ladder and climbing it to change the clocks back one hour and for taking out the trash. You
were a big help. Members Ginny Svehlak, Willy Matus, and Margaret Martinek went on the Polka Mikula cruise. There were many people on the cruise from Ennis, and they all had a great time. They stopped at two ports, ate too much, and Ginny had lots of pictures for us to look at. They told of some incidents that happened that I won’t mention! They truly had a wonderful time. The door prize was brought by Libbie Vrla and was won by Ann Clagett. Little gifts were handed out by Ann, which is always fun. President Dorothy thanked everyone for coming and asked if we could help put all the table and chairs up and to remember the December 13 Christmas party. Bertha Podhrasky made a motion to adjourn the meeting; it was seconded by Irene Prachyl.
Other News Mary Zabojnik is planning a 25th wedding anniversary/Thanksgiving dinner for her daughter Deanna Inman and husband and all their family at her home November 18. I know they will have a wonderful day. Joyce and Joe Ehrenberger and their daughter Julie and her family were here from Charlotte, North Carolina, for a long weekend. They enjoyed seeing the Arboretum which they had not seen since they lived in Dallas over 20 years ago. They worried about flying home on Monday where Superstorm Sandy was hitting the East Coast, but they had no problems. The other day, my friend Wilma Vrla called me on my birthday. She does that every year, and we have a long, good visit. She and Frank have moved to Preston Wood Tradition Retirement Home and are very happy and doing fine. It was so good to hear from you. Someone told me to say hello to one of our faithful readers—Jimmy Strunc. If ever you’re off on one of our meeting days, come and have lunch with us. Remember, everyone: December 13 is our Christmas party. Be sure and come, bring your gift, money for dues, and quilt chances. We will have lots of good food and fellowship. I hope to see you all. Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth
The Ladies’ Circle of Lodge 92, Fort Worth met on November 13, 2012, with 44 members, one guest, and four men attending. President Marlene Bass led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance and welcomed all to the meeting. One guest came for lunch. She was Pauline Morbitzer’s daughter, Donna Thompson, who hails from Oklahoma. Vice President Theretta Praslicka shared an inspirational poem, entitled, “Laughter Thru the Tears,” and offered a prayer. She always talks to God in a very special way. Business proceeded with the reading of minutes and financial report. Lucille Kret reported that her daughter Linda Horner is still having health issues. We send our love and prayers to her that she will feel better soon. A thank you note from Gayle Scaff Krengel of Lodge 92, Fort Worth was read thanking the Circle for donating money to help with the expenses of the lodge’s Czech Heritage Day celebration. Comments were made from yours truly, thanking the group for the card and money sent to me after having had surgery. Sunshine Chair Pauline will be sending Christmas cards to those

President Marlene presented the information on caterers for our December luncheon. John Durham will be providing our meal, and we are so looking forward to his good cookin’. You do need to make reservations so please call me (817) 551-0965 or one of the officers to get your name on our list. Plans for December that were voted on and discussed are:
• There will only be a very short business meeting. Only laughter and love will be allowed. • John Durham will cater. • There will be no door prizes this time. • A $10 gift for the gift exchange is required if you want to play with us. • Please bring an unwrapped toy for Toys for Tots or a stuffed animal or bear for the Snowball Express. • Other donations to our targeted organizations will be accepted as well. We will be sending cash to them at year’s end.
Gloria Farek will head up a committee to get a slate of officers for the coming year, and once again, she showered each of us with a “prize”

Hostesses were Mary Ann Krivanek, Marie Keller, Lupe Esparza, JoAnn Wilcox, and Darlene Tompkins. Mary Jean Loy was to help, but we got word that she was ill and couldn’t come. We are hoping she is better by now. Although we had several birthdays, there was only one person to sing to. President Marlene Bass was 39 once again. She told how she and Pauline

Door prizes included several books (Chicken Soup for the Soul for Christmas), money, bracelet, wine, hand lotions, beautiful Christmas pillow, placemats and napkins, and a crystal pumpkin. There were others but our hostesses won them and didn’t have time to share. We also had a raffle of a basket full of personal items. Lucy not only won the Christmas pillow but the basket as well. Lucky Lady! Betty Loyd brought plants from her yard for the taking. Everyone is always so giving and kind to think of these ladies. It is truly a blessing to come and see the

District Three Queen: Tribute to Nana
Dear Vestnik, On November 10, 2012, I lost an important person in my life. My Nana went to be with the Lord after she fought a courageous battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease. She was always so supportive of me in anything I was involved in. She was there to support me when I won District Three Queen on June 26, 2012. She hadn’t been diagnosed yet, but still feeling the signs of her illness, she sat and watched me that day in support of my run for queen. That was the type of Nana she was. The Saturday she passed away, she
was honored in a special way by an ALS walk. I was privileged to be part of the walk, along with 25 other family members and friends. Together, we raised $4,500 for a cure for ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). Judy Baucom, my Nana, I know is so proud of all of our hard work. I hope to make her proud in all I do. I will always hold special memories of her in my heart. Fraternally, Reagan Langer 2012 District Three Queen Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club President —SPJST—

Lodge 187 Round Rock youth saves friend’s life
After a weekend of soccer at the Houston Shoot Out, SPJST Lodge 187, Round Rock member Brodi Volek and friend Kendall Ayers asked Granny Rubie if they could drive to Galveston to relax on the beach. At the beach, the two girls were out riding waves and talking when suddenly Brodi realized that the waves were very strong and taking the girls out further so she suggested they return to shore. However, the next wave swept them out from under their feet. When they tried to stand up, they couldn’t reach the bottom. Apparently, there was a drop off. Each wave carried them out further and further soon to be too far to be heard as they called out for help. Then, the big surprise came as Kendall announced to Brodi that she could not swim. Kendall asked Brodi to help her. Brodi asked her to hold onto her arm, and she would try to make it to the berm that extended some two blocks out into the ocean. Still being quite a distance from the berm, Brodi knew there was nothing else to do but to try to reach it. Kendall panicked and reached for Brodi and wrapped her arms around her neck causing Brodi to go under. Once they were able to surface to the top of the wave, Brodi asked Kendall to let her go and just

hold onto her arm and to try to dog paddle to stay afloat, ride the waves, and try to reach the berm. Each time, the wave would take them further and further out into the ocean in very, very deep waters. Meanwhile, Granny is calling out to them, and they could not hear anything due to the waves. Granny tried to climb the berm at shore and noticed the lifeguards attempting to make their way out toward the deep waters toward the girls. Kendall was crying and in a panic asking Brodi to please not leave her to drown. Brodi tried harder and harder to reach the berm, each time getting swept off and out and under. Brodi felt that she herself could possibly swim and reach the berm by herself, but she just didn’t want to leave her friend to drown so she kept holding onto her hand and attempted time after time to reach the berm, each time getting swept away and down and out with her friend crying and pleading for her life. Brodi noticed the end of the berm and knew if they didn’t make it to the berm in the next couple of waves, they would be swept out into the ocean— never to be seen again—the lifeguards still not reaching them. With one last try, and with the help of her Guardian Angel, Brodi finally was able to grab hold of the very rough berm with her left hand and called out to Kendall that when the next wave comes, she should stick out her hand as far as she could, and that she would attempt to reach for it. Brodi told Kendall that if they locked
hands and jumped when the wave comes, she would attempt to throw her on the berm. She felt that would be their last and final chance before being swept out into ocean waters. Brodi explained that her hand stretched out at least five or six feet, and she was at last able to reach her crying friend again, and the plan worked. Both girls didn’t even notice the lifeguards coming, but they were able to climb the rough, jagged, unfinished rocks of the berm, both bleeding from cuts and bruises. But they were safe! Kendall wrapped her arms around Brodi, hugging her tightly and saying,

“Thanks for saving my life.” Brodi told relieved Granny that she just could not leave her friend out there to drown. “I just couldn’t do it even though I felt I could make it by myself. I had to try to save her. I just couldn’t leave her,” Brodi explained. The girls fought the waves and water for over an hour and were totally exhausted. The lifeguards got there as the girls climbed up the very rough rocks and helped them to shore which was about two blocks away. One guard stated that the waters in that area are very, very deep, and that they have lost several people in that same area. Brodi stated, “God just threw us up against those rocks.” Rubie Volek —SPJST—
Great gift ideas for kids to give
(StatePoint) Between family, friends, coaches and teachers, some children give as many holiday presents as they receive. Helping your child pick out great gifts can be tricky and often times, impersonal. This year, encourage your child’s creativity with easy kids’ crafts they’ll give as gifts. Do-it-yourself handmade gifts are a growing trend, thanks to the popularity of sites like Etsy and Pinterest. “Unlike a store-bought present, a handmade present is a personalized treasure made by you!” says Meg Survil, general manager of the brand MakIt, which preserves children’s artwork on objects like plates and bowls.

Here are a few suggestions for thoughtful gifts kids can give this holiday:
Scrapbook Scrapbooks are a great way for children to show their appreciation for friends and siblings. They can create an interactive stroll down memory lane with pictures, cards and other mementos. Include shared interests and pictures of both the child and gift recipient together to truly personalize the present.
Art and Photo Projects Immortalizing your child’s artwork or an adorable photograph is a perfect keepsake from your child. For example, MakIt will embed your drawing or photo into everyday items such as plates and travel tumblers you can enjoy daily. The products are nontoxic, BPA-free and made in the USA. Dishwasher-safe, they are also breakresistant, so they can last forever. And don’t forget Fido! You can create gifts for your pets and from your pets as well. Learn more at

Themed Gift Baskets You and your child can have fun putting together gift baskets. Choose a theme to reflect the personality of the recipient. If the basket is for a beloved teacher, an educational theme would be great. If your child and grandparent love to play catch together, a sportsthemed basket would be ideal. Use your imagination when it comes to the theme and always make sure the basket is overflowing! With handmade gifts like these, your child is sure to have the perfect present for everyone. —SPJST—
Protect your pets from holiday hazards

(StatePoint) You can bet that during the holiday season your pet is bound to sniff out leftovers, dig into the presents and have fun with all of your decorations. And while these holiday effects can spread cheer and joy amongst your human family members, they can be a real hazard to pets. This season, keep your holiday celebration safe, happy and healthy for pets by taking these key measures:
Decorate Wisely Avoid poisonous holiday plants like poinsettias and holly. There are plenty of toxic-free alternatives as evocative of the season as these traditional holi-
day favorites. If you must deck the halls with such plants, place them in an out of the way spot your pets can’t reach and keep your pets away from those areas of your home. Tinsel and gift ribbons are tempting for pets that like to play with shiny things, but when swallowed, such items can cause intestinal obstructions. Clean up after opening presents and vacuum around the tree to pick up any gift debris, as well as fallen pine needles which pose a similar hazard. Avoid the Problem When it comes to the holidays, there’s no need to be a Grinch in order
to keep your celebration safe for pets. New technologies are making it easier to teach pets to stay away from certain areas of your home, both indoors and outside. For example, Invisible Fence Brand Micro Shields Avoidance Solutions are small mobile wireless units to train pets to avoid areas of the home or yard where they might get in trouble. And if you have multiple pets, you can set different rules for different pets. So don’t forgo that lovely holiday candle display just because you have a pet in your life. More information can be found at www.invisiblefence.com .
Watch Your Plate As most great pet owners know, not all human foods are safe or healthy for pets. Pets can choke on bones in meat or fish dishes. And such foods as onions, macadamia nuts and chocolate — which are commonly found in holiday cooking and baking — are unsafe for dogs. Avoid having your well-meaning guests sending Spot to the vet by laying ground rules about sharing food. Also, one man’s trash is a pet’s treasure, so be sure to keep the lid on the garbage secure. By taking proper precautions, you can keep the holidays festive this year for both you and your pets. —SPJST—

Christmas tree lighting tips
Lighting a Christmas tree may seem like child’s play, but time and again people struggle with the task. Untangling wires and wrapping them around boughs can be nerve wracking, but lighting a tree doesn’t have to be a chore when you follow some tips from the professionals.
First, keep in mind that wrapping lights around the tree horizontally is more work and often doesn’t produce a multi-dimensional effect. Rather, string the lights from the trunk up to the top, working vertically. This is actually how the tree decorators at Rockefeller Center in New York City do the famous tree year after year. This method helps eliminate tangled wires and empty spots. Remember to plug

in the strands of lights before you begin to check for burnt-out bulbs and to adjust the spacing of lights to prevent dark spots. Think about varying light bulb sizes to add more dimension. String an inner layer of small LED white lights to produce an inner glow on the tree before adding larger, colored lightson top to increase visual appeal. Just be sure to match the same wattage of the lights so that you do not

have power surges and can prolong the life of the bulbs. (MS) —SPJST—
