Christmas Parade Floating

We participated in the big Fort Worth Parade of Lights on “Black

Friday” - November 23. There were thousands and thousands of people lining the streets of Downtown Fort Worth and seeing SPJST! It was such an awesome experience. Thanks to Lodge 154, Fort Worth for hosting the floats. Riders from Lodge 92, Fort Worth also joined in. Special thanks to Float Driver John Hoelscher and wife Lisa for assisting us with the floats. And, something special—one of the floats was awarded an honorable mention. That is impressive considering the magnitude and professionalism of this parade. The next day, David and I traveled to Ballinger’s Olde Town Christmas parade where we met up with Lodge 49, Rowena Youth Club members and parents to ride the float. Hats off to these very polite and very well-disciplined youth! The float received the first place youth award. How exciting! Thanks to the lodges who have requested the float during this Christmas season. As of this writing, we have nine more float appearances in 2012. We are taking bookings for 2013. Give me a call or send me an email to book the float for 2013.

2013 SPJST Calendars 2013 SPJST calendars were mailed out last week. If you do not receive your calendar by December 15, please contact Financial Secretary Roy Vajdak’s department at the Home Office.

Fraternal Alliance of Texas Bowling Tournament and Silent Auction Start making your plans now to be in New Braunfels, Texas, on Saturday, February 9, 2013, at Fiesta Lanes, located at 1202 Huisache Avenue (behind HEB-Walnut Street) for the Ninth Annual FAOT (Fraternal Alliance Of Texas) Bowling Tournament to raise funds for scholarships. All lodges and/or members are encouraged to bring an item for the silent auction which will be held in conjunction with the bowling tournament to raise additional funds. Those who participated in past years will testify that it was a fun day filled with lots of fraternalism shared by all while raising money for a worthy cause. Teams again this year will consist of five members - any combination of men and women. Registration will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday with bowling starting at 12 noon. A handicap of 80 percent of 200 per game will be added to the total score following the completion of the third game. All teams are encouraged to pre-register by February 1. Visit www.spjst.org for additional details. Congratulations to Cullen Hairrell of Lodge 9, Snook in District One and Jessica Fucik of Lodge 30, Taiton in District Six as 2012 SPJST winners in the Fraternal Alliance Of Texas scholarships. Twenty students representing 10 active fraternals in Texas were named recipients of scholarships at the conclusion of the 112th FAOT Convention held at Hilton Garden Inn in Temple, Texas, on October 20. With your continued support, next year we aim to present more and possibly bigger scholarships. Progressive “42” Domino Tournament The first SPJST State Tournament of 2013 will take place on January 12. This will be the Progressive “42” Domino Tournament to be hosted by Lodge 6, Cottonwood. Please include in your New Year’s resolution to become actively involved in all state and local lodge activities in 2013. For additional details about the tournament, visit www.spjst.org.

Tarok Tournament The SPJST State Tarok Tournament will be held on February 2, hosted by All participants are encouraged to preregister so we will have some idea as to how many players plan to participate and so we can notify the host lodge how much food they will need to prepare for the noon meal. Non-members will be permitted to participate in all state tournaments. The registration fee for members will be $7 while non-members pay $15. If anyone knows of someone (member or non-member) who would like to participate, please encourage them to submit an entry.

Thanks for the Memories It appears that just yesterday, I assumed the duties of SPJST State Fraternal Activities Coordinator. Through the years as Colleen and I traveled across the state of Texas promoting SPJST, training officers and members, assisting in local lodge fundraisers (peeling potatoes, cooking, and washing dishes), working state tournaments, assisting officers with the necessary paperwork, bringing greetings from the Home Office, or just being there to show appreciation to local members for all they have done to promote SPJST and fraternalism for their lodge and the communities that they serve, we have made many new friends and acquaintances. On return visits, these friendships and acquaintances were reinforced and strengthened. As many of you may or may not have heard, I will be retiring January 1, 2013. The warm welcome we received from all our visits will always be cherished and remembered for a long, long, long time. If we ever have the oppor-

State Youth Director’s December updates

Dear Youth Leaders, I hope you and your family enjoyed Thanksgiving. As we rap up 2012, “no pun intended,” we see all the blessings within our SPJST Youth Program. Christmas Day will be upon us very soon and even now your youth are having visions of sugar-plums dancing in their heads and of course Ol’ Saint Nicholas who will soon be there. You will be hard at work preparing for your December meeting and all your other activities. I wish you and your family an amazing Christmas, and thank you, leaders, for the wonderful work you do with our SPJST youth. I hope everything is going well for you and your youth club. Looking back on 2012, it was an impressive year for the youth program. Any time you and your youth are able to make a positive difference in the life of an individual, family, or on a community, that’s an amazing accomplishment. We did that numerous times this year. I hope that everyone keeps up the great work in the weeks and months to come and keeps the program strong into 2013! In my last letter, I asked you to challenge your youth to help a family or collect food for a local food pantry. Thank you for your email responses telling me what projects your youth will be working on in their community. You make a big difference in the lives of our youth. If there is anything that I can do to help you and your youth club, please let me know.

Youth Leaders’ Retreat Plans are for the retreat to start on Saturday, March 9 at 10 a.m. at Hilton Garden Inn in Temple. Youth leaders may choose to stay overnight and leave

• West Library Tale Tellers will entertain children with several performances of Christmas Czech tales. In the Czech culture good children are rewarded with fruits and candies; naughty ones are scolded and may receive a piece of coal or a potato. Children who sing a song or Christmas carol, or say a prayer, receive sweets or toys from the angel. If for some reason St. Nicholas cannot visit a home, children put a stocking in a window, on a doorknob, or under a pillow in hopes of receiving a gift while they are sleeping. St. Nicholas and Santa Claus Children will be delighted to visit with our version of Czech St. Nicholas, Sv. Mikuláš. Dressed in the customary miter, cloak, and stole and carrying a crozier, he is accompanied by an angel and a devil, as he visits with children. And what Christmas would be complete without the classic jolly Ol’ Santa Claus. Santa visits will be available each Saturday beginning with their grand entrance on December 1.

TCGS receives publishing awards

Wednesday, December 5, 2012

Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) has been a leader in publishing Czech genealogical books since its inception more than 10 years ago. On November 2, 2012, TCGS was recognized once again for its excellence in publishing by receiving three writing awards from the Texas State Genealogical Society (TSGS) at its annual conference held in Fort Worth, Texas. The Cesky Stopy (TCGS quarterly publication), Lee County Czechs (history of the Czechs of Lee County written by the Reverend John Gantt), and the soon-to-be-released, Early Czech Schools, each received monetary awards in their respective categories. This is the second time that TCGS has received recognition from TSGS. In 2011, TCGS received an award for Czechs in Uniform Volume 3. Texas State Genealogical Society has developed this recognition program to encourage and assist partner societies in their efforts toward the development of research resources. TCGS is very pleased to have been recognized two years in a row by this prestigious organization. During the awards banquet, TCGS was commended for success of its submissions, mentioning that three submissions won awards out of the five publications submitted, which was a remarkable feat. The Texas Czech Genealogical Society has adopted five purposes (objectives) to which it is dedicated. These purposes are:

ogy of the particular group of people known as “Texas Czechs.”

2. To identify sources of genealogical interest to the Texas Czech genealogical community.

3. To preserve items of genealogical interest to the Texas Czech genealogical community and make them accessible to the general public (including, but not limited to, preservation of rare books, manuscripts, vital records, and personal notes).

4. To publish materials of interest to the Texas Czech genealogical community (including, but not limited to, reprints of rare books, manuscripts, vital records, and personal notes).

5. To provide and/or promote educational activities directed at aiding individuals in furthering their personal genealogical research activities. TCGS feels strongly that publishing these types of resources helps TCGS to meet these stated objectives. —SPJST—

Border Crossings now available

Border Crossings is the well-told and dramatic story of a young man whose comfortable life is abruptly transformed by the savagery of World War II. Forced to rely on primal instincts and his familiarity with the rugged highlands of Moravia, Charles Novacek casts his lot first with the anti-Hitler Underground and then with the resistance to the Nazis’ Communist successors. “My recollections pain me,” he writes, “still, they have made me who I am.” Novacek’s experience as a Hungarian-speaking Czecho-Slovak patriot demonstrates the folly of petty nationalism and the resilience of human decency and love.” ―Madeleine Albright, former U.S. Secretary of State

The Story This absorbing and previously unpublished memoir, chronicles the remarkable life of Charles Novacek― one that took him from his youth spent in the Czech resistance against the Nazis and the Communists to the displaced persons camps of Germany to the military dictatorship of Venezuela

before granting him access to the American dream. Charles (Karel) Novacek was born in Ožd’any, Czechoslovakia, on May 11, 1928, to a Hungarian homemaker mother and Moravian policeman father. In 1938, his idyllic childhood was shattered with the Munich Agreement, displacement of the Novacek family to Moravia and the ensuing Nazi occupation of Bohemia and Moravia. The family became actively involved in the Czech resistance. At the age of 11, Charles and his sister Vlasta were trained for wartime resistance by their father Antonin and Uncle Josef Robotká: how to resist pain, hunger, and fear―and to trust no one. Novacek continued his work in the resistance after World War II ended as the Soviets occupied his homeland. He endured arrest, capture, and torture ultimately escaping across the German border. Novacek’s memoir brings the experiences and thoughts of the young resistance fighter sharply to life while also bearing the sage perspective of a man in his eighth decade of life. The book is supplemented with a map, 30 black and white photos, a timeline, and biographies from Political Prisoners.eu and the Institute for Totalitarian Regimes.

The Author Charles Novacek graduated from the Industrial College of Engineering in Brno, Czechoslovakia with a degree in mechanical engineering and attended the Masaryk University School of Law in Brno. After escaping his homeland in 1948, Novacek fled to Germany, then Venezuela and was finally able to immigrate with his family to the United States in 1956 where he taught himself English as his seventh language. Novacek became a registered professional engineer and spent 33 years in the Detroit, Michigan, metropolitan area as a civil engineer, project, design and quality assurance manager. He received an ACI Construction Practice

In addition to being an accomplished engineer, Novacek was a talented artist who carved stone and painted many fine and vibrant works, and a world traveler who was ever interested in the beauty and intricacy of other cultures. He was a lifelong learner who continually sought knowledge, earning two masters degrees and studying Chinese in his retirement years. Novacek died in Detroit, Michigan, in 2007.
