Merry Christmas from Melanie and David and Our Kitty Family
This is probably a story of fiction, but the moral of the story is very real.
A few years ago, a group of salesmen went to a regional sales convention in Chicago. They had assured their wives that they would be home in plenty of time for Friday night’s dinner. In their rush, with tickets and briefcases, one of these salesmen inadvertently kicked over a table which held a display of apples. Apples flew everywhere. Without stopping or looking back, they all managed to reach the plane in time for their nearly-missed boarding . . . All but one! He paused, took a deep breath, got in touch with his feelings, and experienced a twinge of compassion for the girl whose apple stand had been overturned. He told his buddies to go on without him, waved good-bye, told one of them to call his wife when they arrived at their home destination and explain his taking a later flight. Then, he returned to the terminal where the apples were all over the terminal floor. He was glad he did. The 16-year-old girl was totally blind. She was softly crying, tears running down her cheeks in frustration, and at the same time helplessly groping for her spilled produce as the crowd swirled about her; no one stopping and no one to care for her plight. The salesman knelt on the floor with her, gathered up the apples, put them back on the table, and helped or-

ganize her display. As he did this, he noticed that many of them had become battered and bruised; these he set aside in another basket. When he had finished, he pulled out his wallet and said to the girl, “Here, please take this $40 for the damage we did. Are you okay?” She nodded through her tears. He continued on with, “I hope we didn’t spoil your day too badly.” As the salesman started to walk away, the bewildered blind girl called out to him. “Mister . . .” He paused and turned to look back into those blind eyes. She continued, “Are you Jesus?” He stopped in mid-stride . . . and he wondered. He gently went back and said, “No, I am nothing like Jesus — He is good, kind, caring, loving, and would never have bumped into your display in the first place.” The girl gently nodded. “I only asked because I prayed for Jesus to help me gather the apples. He sent you to help me, so you are like Him — only He knows who will do His will. Thank you for hearing His call, Mister.” Then slowly he made his way to catch the later flight with that question burning and bouncing about in his soul: “Are you Jesus?”
Do people mistake you for Jesus? That’s our destiny, is it not? To be so much like Jesus that people cannot tell the difference as we live and interact with a world that is blind to His love, life, and grace. If we claim to know Him, we should live, walk and act as He would. Knowing Him is more than simply quoting Scripture and going to church. It’s actually living the Word as life unfolds day to day. You are the apple of His eye even though you, too, have been bruised by a fall. He stopped what He was doing and picked up you and me on a hill called Calvary and paid in full for our damaged fruit. Sometimes we just take things for granted, when we really need to be sharing what we know . . . Being happy doesn’t mean everything is perfect. It means you’ve decided to see beyond the imperfections.
Best wishes, dear Věstník readers, for a wonderful Christmas and New Year 2013. Thanks for your friendship throughout the year. May God bless you and your family always. —SPJST—

Lodge 15 Buckholts reports on December meeting
We had a very brief meeting this month due to the extreme cold weather. We had to prepare for the freeze and drain all the pipes at the lodge hall; therefore, we would not have any water in the kitchen or bath-

rooms. So we met in the Tomascik’s home where it was nice and warm. We did not want to reschedule the meeting as it is such a busy time for everyone with Christmas so near. We did need to meet in order to elect officers for the coming year. The meeting was called to order by President Doug Williams at 5 p.m. Regina Peevey led us in the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a moment of silence in memory of departed members. President Williams said he had a nice letter from District Two Director Jesse Pospisil. He gave us his support for the coming year. He had intended to attend the meeting, but was so sorry it did not work out. He wished us all a Merry Christmas and a successful year for our lodge. In the election of officers, we regret that Vice President Frank Tomascik said that he didn’t wish to be reelected due to his age and health. A.W. Zajicek will fill that position beginning in the new year. The other officers agreed to fill their spots so Frank Tomascik made the motion that they elect them all by acclamation, seconded by Virginia Williams. Motion carried. President Williams spoke on all upcoming SPJST events. He also asked Regina Peevey to report on the Christmas cantata held at First United Methodist Church in Cameron in which she was the pianist. Regina said that it turned out great. Regina always does such a superb performance. President Williams asked Lamerle Zajicek to give us a report on what she and Regina have decided would work to brighten up the entrance for the pic-

State Duke shares activity updates
Hello, Fellow Members! I have not submitted a report recently, so I thought I would update everyone on what I have been up to this year.
On September 30, we sang the Czech National Anthem during the opening ceremonies in Houston. We were representing SPJST at the Slovak Heritage Festival. There were different booths representing many regions. We ate lunch at the Croatian booth. It was interesting! Jerry and I tried our best to stay warm at the State Fair of Texas held in Dallas. We bought lots of hot chocolate that day!
This was also at the State Fair. I was cold on stage, but it was fun!

Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club reports on Christmas program
On Sunday, December 9, 2012, we had our monthly meeting and annual Christmas program. Our charity for this month was to bring two canned food items. We discussed old and new business. On Friday, we went to Grand Station for our Christmas social. Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club also joined us. I had a really good time with my friends from camp. Laser tag was my favorite. After the meeting, we practiced for our Christmas program. I read a poem. We started the meal at 5 p.m. and the program started at 6 p.m. It went well, I thought. After the program, we all sang, “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” Then, we sang “Jingle Bells” loudly to see if Santa would come. He did! We were able to tell him our wishes, and he gave us a goody bag with candy and fruit. Next Meeting—January 2 Our next meeting will be January 2, 2013, at 6:30 p.m. I am so ready for Christmas break. I will be able to rest and visit with family and friends and not to mention I hope to get the Kindle I asked for. I think I’ve been good enough this year. I would like to wish everyone a safe, fun, and family-filled holiday season. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Fraternally yours, Kaylea Walker —SPJST—

Lodge 47, Seaton youth enjoys Thanksgiving at Fort Hood
Dear Members and Readers, I would like to share an experience I had this Thanksgiving. Our family was invited to visit Fort Hood and eat dinner with the troops. There were all kinds of food to eat and enough to feed an “army.” There was everything from turkey to crab legs and pizza.
The best part was visiting with and saying thank you to all the soldiers. It was really great to see them smile when they were told “thank you” for protecting our freedom. I hope to have this opportunity again next year. We all should pray for our soldiers, and be sure to thank them for what they do. Angelina Ringwald —SPJST—

—SPJST—

Josef Lada (born December 17, 1887, in Hrusice; died December 14, 1957, in Prague) was born into the family of a cobbler. For his pictures, he used many native subjects from Hrusice and surroundings. At the age of 14, he went to Prague to learn decorating and scene-design. He was a self-taught person in drawing. He gradually developed his own style with characteristic strong lines and rounded shapes of figures. He did not have vision in his right eye from childhood, so that is why he lacked depth perception. This handicap influenced his way of painting and the finished look of his pictures. Josef Lada married Hana Budějická (died 1951) in year 1923. They had two daughters. The older daughter, Alena Ladová (1925-1992) was also an illustrator and painter. She wrote a book entitled, My Father, Josef Lada. The book published over 9,000 issues. The younger daughter, Eva, perished in an air bombing of Prague in year 1945. In 1947, Lada received for his work an award title, “The National Artist.” Lada’s villa in Hrusice is currently regulated by the Josef Lada Memorial
and is managed by the Regional Museum Prague-East. Lada worked as a cartoonist, an illustrator, and a writer. He wrote many fairy tales and books for children, including Kocour Mikeš (Tom-cat Mikesh) and The Clever Auntie Fox. He illustrated a novel about a soldier in World War I written by Jaroslav Hašek entitled, The Fateful Adventures of the Good Soldier Švejk During the World War. This was followed by Karel Havlicek Borovsky poetry Tyrolean Elegies, Epigrams and King Lavra collections. Lada illustrated fairy tales from authors K.J. Erben and Drda. He was author of theater decorations, scenes, and costumes to theater plays and operas brought out in the National Theater. Lada was the
head designer of the successful Czech film, “Playing with the Devil” in 1956. Lada created about 400 pictures and about 15 thousand illustrations. His illustrations inspired the Czech Poet Jaroslav Seifert to write a collection of poems, “Boy and Stars” (1956). The most well-known of Lada’s pictures are Czech Nativity Scenes; Hasterman in the Winter; Nicholas` Presents; At a little Fire; Wake; and others. Lada’s works are successful at auctions. The master canvas of Josef Lada’s Ponocný (1947) was auctioned on Saturday November 24, 2012, through the company Dorotheum in Prague. Calling price was 0.5 million Kč=$25,600. The new owner bought the picture Ponocný for 1,2 million Kč

= $61,500 (without auction fee 20 percent). The picture Ponocný was auctioned for the most money from all of Lada’s pictures. The picture Ponocný has a typical motif. This picture is, however, above-average large and perfectly worked up. The artist placed the figure of Ponocný singularly (exceptionally) into a city world and at once he kept the folklore impression of the motif. The ponocný or bellman depicts an
extinct profession of a villages’ night guard or watchman who, every night would patrol through a town or village and announce every hour with the sound of a music horn or a bell from a belfry. The ponocný guarded the village against the dangers of fire, attack of strange armies, or thieves. In addition to the horn, he carried a stick or a halbert for protection. In contemporary time, ponocný is a tourist attraction in the CR. So it is as in Prague, Domažlice or in Znojmo.
