VӖSTNÍK
. . . keep it growing bigger and better . . .
2012 was a landmark year for SPJST with its 115th birthday and
for the Vestnik with its 100th birthday. And, 2013 is another landmark year. It’s the 60th anniversary of the SPJST Youth Department. I remember fondly 10 years ago, during the 50th anniversary, we had a year-long celebration honoring SPJST’s benchmark program. It was a big year. And, we set a big goal—to grow the Youth Program bigger and better and to establish 50 active youth clubs. We rolled up our sleeves and hit the road! Working together—President Leshikar, the District Youth Counselors and assistants, youth leaders and assistants, parents, youth club members, Supreme Lodge, Home Office, and all departments and members throughout SPJST—the goal was achieved and even surpassed as a total of 53 active youth clubs were in existence by year-end. It was truly an amazing feeling and such a sense of accomplishment and pride to be able to carry on the dreams of our SPJST Youth Program founders. I will never forget that feeling. I can’t help but notice that in the most recent Youth Program quarterly report, a total of only 31 youth clubs submitted reports. That really concerns me. Sure, there are many other youth programs out there for kids that compete for their time. But . . . how many of them will teach children how to make a motion in a meeting with parliamentary procedure; how to speak in front of an audience; sewing, cooking, photography, painting, and social skills; Czech heritage; self-confidence; teamwork; leadership; patriotism; character; re-
sponsibility; camping—all of that plus a whole lot more under one roof—in the SPJST Youth Program. I think I could probably write a book about how strongly I believe in the principles of our Youth Program. I lived the program from age six to 18. I was local lodge youth leader for a few years. And, I served as State Youth Director from 1998 to 2004. I believe in it. And, I know it works. We have a team of DYCs and assistants and youth leaders and assistants who work hard at leading our young people. My sincere appreciation and heartfelt thanks to these individuals. One of the driving forces behind SPJST’s Youth Movement in the early 1950s was Birdie Hilsher Pech. I have shared her quote many times because it is still so meaningful today—maybe even more so. In a Vestnik column that Sister Pech wrote in 1953, she says, “If you think that the grass is just a little greener on the other side of the fence, better think twice. Our SPJST has all of the green grass. It is up to us to keep it watered now and keep it growing bigger and better all the time. Keep our youth and keep them entertained for a greater future of our SPJST, for without them, we would perish as grass would die without water.” I hear stories time and time again about what a positive difference the Youth Program has made in participants’ lives. It’s very touching. We must all step up and ensure that these experiences continue for the most members possible and that the Youth Program will grow bigger and better for future generations of SPJST. —SPJST—

First SPJST newspaper editor’s great-grandson enjoys commemorative Vestnik
Dear Ms. Zavodny, Thank you for sending me the special 100-year commemorative issue of the Vestnik. I enjoyed reading about the early history of the newspaper and its predecessors. I was particularly interested in reading about the original Slovanska Jednota, published by Frank Lidiak because he was my great-grandfather. I knew that he was a publisher, but never realized where his printshop was located and was very surprised to learn that the building was still standing in downtown La Grange. Thank you, George Zapalac Lodge 155, Austin —SPJST—
Former State FAC expresses thanks for memories, friendships
What a wonderful way to end 2012 with friends sharing the evening with me on December 27, 2012, at Casa Sol in Seguin. The evening was the annual Lodge 258, Seguin Christmas social with SPJST Home Office chiming in on the event to give me a huge send off toward my retirement. It was so wonderful to see so many fellow employees, neighboring lodge members, and friends taking time out of their busy schedule to make the trip to Seguin and gather to help me celebrate the occasion. It means a lot to me that these wonderful people cared enough to share the evening. The near seven years I spent as State Fraternal Activities Coordinator have been quite enjoyable and sometimes challenging. In our travels, Colleen and I have made many friends as we assisted with state tournaments and events, local lodge/district functions, fundraisers, and just visiting lodges to let them know that we cared and were available to assist whenever needed. On return visits to the many lodges, our acquaintances were strengthened, reinforced, and more friends were met. We will always cherish the warm
welcome we received whenever we visited or attended lodge activities in your area. We plan to stay active with our local lodge and SPJST activities in the coming years. We plan to keep the friendship alive and warm. If we are ever in your neighborhood, we plan to stop in for a cup of coffee, iced tea, or whatever you may have on ice! Thanks for the memories, and we look forward to seeing you soon. Fraternally, Chester and Colleen Jenke Lodge 258, Seguin —SPJST—
Readers “impressed beyond measure” with commemorative Vestnik
Dear Melanie, We just had to let you know that Bill and I were impressed beyond measure with your Vestnik, Volume 100, No. 51—Special Commemorative Issue. What a great representation and illustration of 100 years of publishing by first page examples of some of those issues. Whoever had the idea is to be commended. Also, we read your Keynote presentation to the Texas Czech Genealogical Society meeting with great interest to learn of that organization’s role in preserving the Vestniks to make them available on a searchable database. Our thanks go to all those who devoted their time and effort to this endeavor. We were especially interested in your “Locating Equipment and Software” part of your talk, which will help those of us that would like to do mass scanning of documents for archiving purposes. Thank you again for the great work you and your staff do. We wish you and all continued success in presenting SPJST to its members with future Vestniks. Sincerely, Effie M. In December 2011, Lodge 79, Corpus Christi donated 90-plus hats/caps to the Oncology unit at Driscoll Children’s Hospital. I challenged my fellow members for 2012 with a donation of lap blankets for the hospital. I knew these were bigger projects and would take more time to create, but our members came through with shining colors—like always! We had a goal of 20 blankets, and our grand total of blankets donated on January 3, 2013, was a whopping 39! These blankets were handmade with
love and care by our members and friends of our members. Some of the blankets came from as far as Oklahoma and Tennessee. The hospital representatives were very excited to receive this donation and said they would be put to good use. I would like to personally thank all our members and friends who took time from their busy schedules to create those beautiful blankets. Fraternally, Gerilyn Donnell, Youth Leader —SPJST—

Lodge 92 Fort Worth: 2013 to be year of rebuilding

Happy New Year, Everyone! I hope the new year will be a great one for everyone. Lodge 92, Fort Worth rang in the new year with our annual New Year’s Eve dance. We had an outstanding turnout with the music from the Gary Lee Band. As the music filled the hall so did the dance floor with everyone enjoying the evening. The 92 Road House Band played January 6 for the retirement party for our manager Joyce Tesar. There were 300-plus people in attendance who came to honor Joyce for her 32 years of service. Most of the attendees have become close friends with Joyce and her family during Joyce’s time as manager and had a chance to visit with Joyce and express their appreciation for her work. After several years of volunteering to help her husband’s parents, Frank and Marie Tesar, who were the man-

agers at that time, Joyce took over as manager in 1980. Through the years, Joyce has been responsible for many things, but one she will be remembered for is how well she decorated for different functions and always had things set up to run smoothly. This year will be a rebuilding one for our lodge as we are making changes to upgrade and move forward to keep up with the fast pace of our world today. The first item on the agenda is to make necessary repairs to the hall and begin accepting credit cards at the bar. We are also working with the city of Lake Worth by joining the Chamber of Commerce and offering the hall for its functions. It is our goal to let people know we are here and available for all kinds of functions. Cheryl Hubenak, Reporter —SPJST—

Dear Friends, It is with great pleasure and eager anticipation that the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas in collaboration with the College of Music at the University of North Texas and the Janáček Academy of Music and the Performing Arts of Brno announces the forthcoming celebration of the life and work of Czech composer Leoš Janáček (1854 to 1928) during a weeklong International Festival and Conference on the UNT campus in Denton. University Singers will be followed by the premiere performance here in America of Janáček’s dramatic song cycle, Zápisník Zmizelého (The Diary of One Who Disappeared), featuring the Janáček Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Professor Vit Spilka, Head of the Department of Music at Janáček Academy.
The story - most likely inspired by an old folk tale - centers around the mysterious disappearance of a fine, upstanding young man from a village in East Moravia. Fearing the worst, the villagers searched his room for clues and found a diary which contained several short poems which held the key to the mystery.
Janáček was a passionate collector of folk songs. His music, like that of Dvořák and Smetana, was deeply influenced by the tranquil beauty of the Moravian (or Czech) countryside and the folk songs of his native land. He was the fifth of nine children born to an impoverished school teacher in the village of Hukvaldy in Northern Moravia, a few kilometers east of Příbor. At the tender age of 11, young Leoš was sent to Brno when he began his musical training as a chorister at the Augustinian Abbey of St. Thomas. After studies in Prague, Leipzig, and Vienna, Janáček returned to Brno where he would spend a lifetime teaching, directing, and composing while battling the prejudices of the powerful German-speaking intelligentsia against the use of the vernacular in Czech classical music. Success was slow in coming. Janáček’s work remained virtually unknown outside Moravia until he was well into his sixties when at last he achieved recognition outside his homeland through the success of his opera, Jenůfa. This was after his move

I hope you will make every effort to attend some of the performances in Denton during this milestone in the study of Czech music and culture at the largest and one of the most prestigious schools of music in the nation. In closing, I would like to express our gratitude to James Scott, Dean of the College of Music, for his enthusiastic support of CEFT’s work at UNT, and to the College of Music for shouldering the lion’s share of the costs. We are grateful as well to Professor Tom Sovik whose work on behalf of CEFT and the study of Czech music at UNT is indispensable. Somerville Calculus Teacher Jessica Windham states: “Brittanie’s a great student. She’s fun to have in class. She’s so energetic, and she’s a hard worker, and she’s really a pleasure to be around. Brittanie just works hard in class as soon as she gets in the class; even if she doesn’t have a chance to complete everything the night before because of a game or practice. Then she just completes it as soon she comes into class and works hard while she’s there. And, I’m sure there have been plenty of late nights where she’s finishing up papers, and finishing up homework, or studying for tests . . . She just takes it as it comes, and she just works as hard as she can.” Somerville Girls’ Head Basketball Coach Sean Fuller says, “It seems to come natural for her to take that lead role. She tells everybody where to go and how to be there. And there’s been a couple times she hasn’t learned a play that I thought that they learned. She literally blurted out, ‘We didn’t learn that play,’ right in the middle of the entire game which was quite hilarious to everybody else; it was comedic. But overall, she has been doing a great job. She tells everybody which way to go defensively and offensively, and tells everybody kind of what I expect of them. And so it’s been a great ride so far.” “Becoming a leader has been a pretty good struggle for me,” Brittanie says. “It didn't start out easy. From not really playing basketball that much when I was younger; then starting in junior high, it got a little bit easier and

2012 - 2013 Youth Club Member Update - Merit Points and Meeting Attendance
Second Quarter Merit Points and Meeting Attendance The totals below in the column labeled “Pts” are merit points earned in the first and second quarters (June to November 2012). This is total merit points for the 2012-2013 youth year. Please see “What is the Merit Point System?” for complete information about the contest. The number in the column labeled “Mtgs” is the number of meetings each youth club member has attended during the June to November 2012 youth year. Please see “What is an Active Youth Member?” below to determine number of meetings needed to participate in youth activities.
What is the Merit Point System? Youth club members earn merit points for participating in SPJST lodge, district and state activities. At the end of the youth year, points are totaled and the youth with the highest points in the youth club receive cash awards.
Contest Dates June 1, 2012 to May 31, 2013
Merit Point Contest Age Divisions Junior—Entering Kindergarten to Age 12 Teen—Age 13 to High School Senior
Rules The youth leader or assistant youth leader is responsible for keeping track of the merit points for each active member of the youth club. The points are to be sent to the State Youth Director on the Quarterly and Merit Point Reports each quarter. Youth club members are also encouraged to keep up with their points and turn them in to the youth leader on a quarterly basis. This system helps both the youth leader and the youth member keep better records of youth participation. Current, official Quarterly and Merit Point Reports, available from the State Youth Director may only be used in the Merit Point Contest. The Quarterly and Merit Point Reports sent to the State Youth Director by the youth leader will be kept on file for at least six months following the conclusion of the contest. Merit points are earned for only those activities listed under Youth Point Values. An activity can only earn points in one category on the point sheet. When in doubt about any activity earning points, contact the State Youth Director prior to the contest conclusion. Everyone will be subject to the same rules in every contest. Failure to comply with any rule shall mean immediate withdrawal.
Merit Point Awards First through fifth place awards are presented in the junior and teen divisions of each youth club. The amount of points that top winners receive in both divisions will determine where the point rankings of the first through fifth winning categories begin. First place winners will be those equal to and 20 points below the top place winner in their age division. Second Place will be 21 to 40 points below the top winner in their age division. Third place will be 41 to 60 points below the top winner in their age division. Fourth place will be 61 to 80 points below the top winner in their age division. Fifth place will be 81 to 100 points below the top winner in their age division. Awards are presented on the lodge, district, and state levels in the junior and teen merit point contests. At each District YAD, the Home Office presents first through fifth place awards to qualifying junior and teen youth club members. The junior and teen with the most points in each district also receive recognition. In the event of a tie, all who tied for first place will receive the award.* Junior and Teen Point Awards First Place $30 Second Place - $25 Third Place - $20 Fourth Place - $15 Fifth Place $10
What is an Active Youth Member? A youngster with a current SPJST insurance certificate may enter the youth program the youth year that he/she will be entering kindergarten. To be considered active, youth club member must attend a majority (seven) of the monthly meetings during the year. The youth must attend the majority of these meetings at his/her home youth club. In those instances where a lodge does not have a youth club, the youngster may attend adult lodge meetings or the meetings of another youth club. The youngster will be eligible for camp and Youth Achievement Day (YAD) after the completion of his/her kindergarten year. Active youth members must be single and not be pregnant or a parent. The age of the youth on June 1 of the current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.). The youth year begins June 1 and ends May 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school.

In Loving Memory of Rose (Rosie) Katherine Milan Steinman
July 22, 1924 - December 12, 2012 • Member of SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth
“Rosie”
Rose (Rosie) Katherine Milan Steinman was a spectacular human being that God shared with us for over 88 years. She was brought into the world by her parents, Anna and Joe Milan, who were respectively from Kunovice, Moravia, and Novigrad, Crotia. They brought with them their rich and vibrant East European heritage. Joe came to America with only eight dollars in his pocket through Ellis Island and went to St. Louis, while Anna came through Galveston. Anna and Joe met at an SPJST dance in Fort Worth and fell in love, but didn’t have the money to get married. In route to Herman Park to go to the traveling Buffalo Bill Wild Show and picnic, they stepped off of a trolley and were hit by a cab. Although they weren’t hurt, the cab company gave them a hundred dollars, so they got married.
They made their way to St. Louis where Joe attended a Croatian Sokol and learned to play a musical instrument. He found work in a Wild West Show playing in the band. The show went to Temple where it broke up, and they returned to Fort Worth where Joe worked for Swift’s & Co. for 43 years and Anna worked for the O.B Macaroni Co. They settled on North Side where they raised a big family: Mary Renfro, Joe G. Milan, Jeannie Mason, Frankie Milan, Rose Steinman Milan, Emil Milan, Frances Mamula, and Jerry Milan. They started doing gymnastics in their backyard and the backyards of Walter Hale and John Becan. Finally, they all joined SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth and formed Sokol Fort Worth on North Houston. In 1934, they formed the Sokol on Northwest 28th Street and started SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth. Anna started selling SPJST insurance during the war, and Rosie became one of the original “Rosie the Riveters.” She worked at Texas Steel making metal parts for airplanes and bombs. She met Donnie at a USO service dance where he was in the Army Air Corps and stationed in Fort Worth. They married on November 11, 1943. Rosie was dedicated to her husband and her family: Donna Rose Parker, Donald D. Steinman Jr., Roy Milan Steinman, Teresa Marie Steinman, Susan Peaton, Mary Steinman, Vicki Hix, Lori Pace, and Jody Steinman. Rosie’s life has not only been dedicated to her family, but to her friends and her Czech heritage. She was a devoted Catholic and photographer and was affectionately known as “Sister Mary Kodak.” —SPJST—
A Rose From Heaven
By Sharron Connelly • Lodge 154, Fort Worth
Rosie went to heaven, as we always knew she would, Then she looked around for Donnie, to find him if she could. He smiled when he saw Rosie, and with a twinkle in his eye, He put his arms around her and kissed her with a sigh.
She recalled her handsome soldier, uniformed and slim and tall, And their joyful, festive wedding and the dancing at the hall.
Married life was good for Rosie, she loved her soldier man, And dancing with her new husband to her Daddy’s oompah band.
As ruler of the household, Donnie thought he was the head, But, as just a friendly reminder, Rosie nailed a crucifix over the bed! Their little house was kind of lonely, without the prints of little toes, So, she prayed for God to fill it, so the story goes.
God whispered, “Put your order in, and Rosie said, “That’s fine!” Then she leaned to Him and said real loud, “I think that I’ll take nine!” One by one, the babies came. What a wonderful sight, And, God kept his promise, much to her delight.
First came Donna Rose, then Donald, then Roy and Teresa, then Susan, Mary, Vickie and Lori. Then OOPS! There came Little Jody, grinning and running all over the place. (Blessings from God, designs by Rosie and Donnie) Rosie was so happy with these blessings from above, She loved the sound of laughter their household full of love.
Things were not so easy, with a family of eleven then, But, they always seemed to manage with everybody pitching in.
Rosie was so loving, and hugged everyone she cared, But if you messed with one of her babies, she’d come out yelling like a bear.
When times were hard, with a mother’s touch, Rosie stretched a budget thin, And Donnie worked a job or two to bring the groceries in. In the midst of all their happiness, tragedy came too many times to stay, And God, for some unknown reason took three of their children away. With Rosie’s profound faith in God, she never questioned why, She knew they’d be united, someday in heaven in the sky. Rosie’s heart was wounded, but no one ever knew, She dedicated her suffering to unfortunate ones she knew. The kids grew up and went their way, But, they didn’t live too far away.

And no matter how far she’d roam, They kept up with their mother on the telephone.
Now, when God hears the angels, singing from a far and distant cloud, He can tell which one is Rosie, because she always sings real loud.
Her colorful Czech heritage, Rosie truly loved, And, she went to all the meetings of the Czech related clubs.
It only took a moment, till she found the wooden door, lt looked just like the old Sokol, but it didn’t have a floor.
Once a month to the Friendship Club, with all her favorite dears, Where she was the only Vice President for over fifty years. As a lifetime insurance member of SPJST, She was as faithful a member, as a member could be.
And, as the lovely Czech Ambassador, all dressed up in her kroj. She became a real Czech doll, like one of her coveted toys. She loved the annual escapades, Wearing her kroj in the many parades.
Rosie had her picture in the Vestnik, more than anyone you see, If those Vestniks were lined up end to end, they would stretch from sea to sea. She dearly loved the Polka Festival, and the festivities at West, But of all the things she loved to do, she loved Sokol best.
A Sokol Sister through and through, she marched, she drilled, she sang, “Fly ye Sokol, Fly on high,” that was the sweet refrain. Rosie went to every Slet, and afterwards the dance, She took part in all the drills, and even went to France.
She was a dedicated Sokol, so faithful and what’s more, And her last special number, was when she was only 84!
In later years, she ran around with the “Golden Girls” each day, They cleaned and cooked and played bingo, till God took most of them away.
The GOLDEN GIRLS were Jeannie and Anna, Big Mary, Little Mary and Rosie.
When Rosie went to heaven, an angel took her by the hand, And led her to the joyful place, we call the “Promised Land.”
She heard our tears and weeping, it was much for her to bear, But she knew some day, all of us would be meeting her up there. God was so delighted to see Rosie back once more, He quickly told St. Peter, “Open up the Golden Door!”
When He looked at Rosie’s record, he marked it with gold paint. And, then He told St. Peter, “They should have picked her for a saint.” One day Rosie asked God if she could join the choir. “To sing among the angels has always been my heart’s desire.”
27
Rosie heard familiar sounds, and quickly raised her hand, She recognized the tuba sounds, from her Daddy’s oompah band.
The stage shone like diamonds and the band was dressed in white, And to Rosie, it was truly heaven, to see such a familiar sight. The band was playing a waltz, the beautiful Skirt of Blue, And Donnie danced with Rosie to that favorite dance they knew. And there at a domino table sat Jeannie, Wilber, Mary and Bill, And big Mary Pavey, was mopping up, an imaginary spill.
Kathryn was at the bar serving pivo and a coke, And Uncle Benny with his toolbox, was fixing things that wasn’t broke. Carrie Bell with all her make-up on, was dressed up to a tee, She was serving hot kolaches, one for you and two for me.
Uncle Joe was leaning over, kissing the one that he adores, Laughing, and telling Carrie Bell, how he snuck in the golden door. And over in the corner, as quiet as he could be, Was Bobby, looking at a photo album, “Rosie snuck it in for me.”
He was kissing pictures of Carolyn, B.J, Carrie Ann, Loy and Kye, And double kissing pictures of his grandkids, the apples of his eye.
Then, Donnie took Rosie by the hand, and brought her undulating joy, For happily playing bingo, was Donald and Theresa and Roy. The meeting brought on laughter, and many hugs and tears, For that part of their family was reunited, after all those many years.
When on earth, Rosie was always late. She’d say, “Well, that’s just fine!” I’m from a big Czech family, and we call that Milan time.” As the official Sokol photographer, Rosie trounced across the land, You never saw her leave the house without a camera in her hand. She documented every event, from having fun to tears, All the Sokol Slets and parties, throughout the many years.
The family would get embarrassed and say, “Rosie definitely not!” Then she’d sneak around behind them, so she could get a better shot.
But when she brought the photos in, for everyone could see, They would look at them with pride and say, “Hey! That’s pretty good of me!” Everyone had to be on guard, and always be aware, For fear she’d snap your photo, while you’re in your underwear.
Her albums number hundreds, documenting it all, Perhaps, there’ll be a place for them in the museum at the hall. So . . . If you are thinking of doing something that you shouldn’t oughta do, Remember, now Rosie’s God’s photographer and she’ll take a picture of you! —SPJST—
