SPJST is . . . Friendship!

We will honor and recognize the 2012 local lodge fraternalists of

the year, winning lodges and youth clubs, district recruiters, and sales agents this Saturday, January 26 at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple for the 2013 SPJST Awards Banquet. The Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center is located on I-35 at 3303 North 3rd Street in Temple. The day’s schedule is: 12 noon - Doors open 1 p.m. - Welcome Speech Presentation by Dianne White Delisi Awards Presentations Banquet Dinner Barbecue Beef, Sausage, Chicken, and Trimmings Door Prize Drawing

Cash bar and concession will be open. Complimentary water and coffee will also be available. The banquet’s theme is “Friendship 2013” which celebrates the beauty of the relationships that SPJST membership fosters. Do You Have a 1992 Camp Tee-Shirt? I received a very special request from a past youth club parent. In 1992, youth Cara Spanel-Weber was the grand prize winner of the camp tee-shirt design contest. Her mom Deborah is in the process of gathering Cara’s tee-shirts to make a teeshirt quilt. “I cannot find any of these shirts around my house even though we had bought several,” Deborah writes. “I think we must have worn them out, and they must have been sent to Goodwill for rags!”

If you have one of these tee-shirts and you would be willing to part with it, please contact me and I will put you in touch with Deborah. The teeshirt design appears below.

Czech Republic President to be Elected This Week The first direct presidential election in the Czech Republic was held on January 11 and 12. No candidate received a majority of the votes in the first round, so a second round runoff election will be held January 25 and 26. Nine individuals secured enough popular signatures or support of parliamentarians to become official candidates for the office. Miloš Zeman and Karel Schwarzenberg qualified for the second round of the election. The incumbent President Václav Klaus is term-limited, thus precluded from seeking reelection. His term ends on March 7, 2013. The newly elected president will begin his fiveyear term on the day he takes the official oath. Source: Wikipedia —SPJST—

Member in Czech Republic experiences Presidential voting

Dear Sis Melanie, We just went through the first round of President voting here, and the two men who received the most will face off now. Both men have served in The Czech Government and are well qualified to hold the post of President of The Czech Republic. Many people did not vote as they were not sure who to vote for or did not think that their vote was necessary . . . sounds familiar! Many don’t understand how a democracy works and runs—it is by the people; for the people; and of the people. Lest we all forget. Fraternally yours, John Albert Kuba Lodge 133, San Antonio Czech Republic —SPJST—

Czech Heritage Museum offers thanks for $11,276 donation

Dear Melanie, The staff and the Board of Directors would like to thank you for the donation of $11,276,82. It was totally unexpected. We know it was a lot of hard work on your part to raise these kinds of funds. We just cannot tell you how much we appreciated what you have done for the museum. Not only have you raised funds, but you also helped us to communicate the happenings of the museum throughout the state. We can tell that the museum means a lot to you, and we sincerely appreciated you donating your time and funds to help the museum. Please come by and visit us any time. Again, thank you. OMG! What an outstanding Vestnik 100 issue. I congratulate you for such a monumental feat! I certainly hope you get your ‘just dues’ for your contribution. Again, this is by far—one of the greatest contributions to our SPJST. Best regards, James J. Janousek Lodge 84, Dallas —SPJST—

SPJST Recognizes Longtime Members

SPJST extends its thanks and appreciation to the many members who are achieving membership landmarks in 2013. This week’s Vestnik lists the SPJST members achieving 50- and 75-years of membership in SPJST and the Age 96 and Age 100 members. Congratulations to these honorees. Members who achieve “The Grand Age of 96” receive special recognition in SPJST. At this special age, members are considered to have “outlived” the terms of their insurance certificate and are allowed to collect its proceeds. They remain members of SPJST with all the privileges and benefits of the active members but are not required to pay any dues or assessments. The 2013 honorees are listed below.

Lodge 187 Round Rock learns about Snow White

Hello, There! Jennave Fuchs gave us a sneak peek at her Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs skit that she does. She gave us a some information about the film that most people may not know. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was to be the first full-length animated feature in motion picture history and as such, Walt Disney had to fight to get the film produced. Both his brother and business partner Roy Disney attempted to talk him out of it and the Hollywood movie industry referred to the film derisively as “Disney’s Folly” while it was in production. He had to mortgage his house to help finance the film’s production, which eventually

16

ran up a total cost of $1,488,422.74, a massive sum for a feature film in 1937. Jennave just may do the whole skit at the February 10 meeting if all or most attend. I sure hope she does because it looked very funny. We started the meeting with asking everyone if they know Gladys Simecek Crisbe. We have her listed as a member and that this is her 50th year with SPJST. We would love to meet her and award her with her SPJST 50th year of membership pin. If anyone knows her, please contact Jennifer McCarthy (512) 565-9156 or email JSupak@Gmail.com. We discussed the awards banquet in Temple on January 26; the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive; and the Lifetime Achievement award. We also discussed the upcoming Join Hands Day and that the adult lodge will be joining the youth lodge. Please have some ideas to share with the youth club on the community adventure for Join Hands Day by the February meeting. We ended the meeting with a wonderful tasty potluck. January birthday is Jennave Fuchs on the 17th. Next Meeting—February 10 The next meeting will be on February 10. There will be bingo, so please bring a dollar prize if playing. The Boy of Joy

There was a boy so full of joy he seemed a sparkler a firecracker about to pop

running around lighting up rooms and hallways filling whole houses with laughter and sunshine the music of his chatter flying to the rafters his jabbering bouncing delightfully off the walls in boundless happiness and exuberance and wherever he went the joy went with him and spread to others that came in contact with him like honey on fingers it literally dripped from him to them

once you saw his joy you became immersed in it and felt goodness once again his eyes telling his story that there could be joy in the world he knew no other way it dwelled in him and sprung from him and he shared it freely without hesitation he had so much to give

that others would see it catch it and keep it remembering when they were young and filled with the same uncomplicated joy

because of him they were renewed and given new insight and meaning to their lives and when they returned to routine their hearts were filled with the joy the boy had given them

it was a simple thing to give yet more precious than all the gold and diamonds in the world yet the boy had give it away unselfishly such was his nature and his spirit as the boy grew so did his joy bringing his example to all reminding us that happiness is a simple thing and made to be shared and given freely to others

the world needs more of him we think— this boy of joy.

Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Leader shares activities

Dear Readers, District Three King Dustin Motley and Duke Lane Slovak, along with Lodge 25 Queen representative Tori Motley participated in the Ennis Festival of Lights Christmas Parade. Unfortunately District Three Queen Reagan Langer was unable to attend the parade due to class obligations; however, she was instrumental in providing the classic convertible car they rode in as Reagan’s grandpa is the proud owner. Reagan, Dana, and grandpa, thank you so much for decorating and providing such special transportation for us! We held our monthly meeting and Christmas party on December 9. April Dvorak, with help from Tori Motley, entertained the group with stories about Czech Christmas customs. Thank you, April! We had a “really cool prize” drawing for a boy and girl. Criteria for the contest was that for each time a member attended a meeting or event their name was put in the drawing. The more times you participated, the more chances of winning. Winners were Paige Tignor and Devin Krajca. After the meeting, Betty distributed gift bags filled with candy and a Sonic gift card to the youth. Then, we all went to the IOOF nursing home and presented the residents with a Christmas program. We sang Christmas carols as a group. Samuel read a Christmas story, Paige played the flute and April, her clarinet. Reagan read a Christmas poem; Dustin Motley, along with guest Todd Forbes danced the hula to Melekelekemaka, and Betty and Rita sang “Narodil se Kristus Pan.” The residents were thankful for our gift of time to them as well as the socks and lap blankets that we gave

Please let me know if you plan on attending or if you need more information. Finally, if you are a new Lodge 47, Seaton member and cannot make it on this day . . . do not fret! I will get with you one-on-one on a day that works for both of us. Just let me know what I can do to help you. District Two youth members were given a choice on what they wanted to do for their social! Here are some pictures of option A. These groups of kids were guests at The Main Event in Austin, Texas. The gathering was divided into three groups, and every-

one bowled, played laser tag, putt-putt golf, and lots of really cool video games. In the middle of all the activity, everyone had time to eat some great pizza and drink some much needed beverages. This was such a good time to catch up with friends from other

Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Shares Christmas Fun

Dear Vestnik Readers, I have been very busy lately. I was in UIL Ready Writing and Spelling. I didn’t make the spelling team for UIL, but I made the ready writing team. I received second place, and my best friend received

first place. During Thanksgiving vacation, we went to Mima and Pawpaw’s new ranch. It was awesome. April shot her first deer there! It was so pretty at the ranch. I also went to Sokol’s Winter Gymnastic Exhibition.

Expression of Sympathy

SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis officers and members extend their deepest sympathy to the family and friends of GEORGE F. GRAMMER, age 87, who passed away in Dallas, Texas on Sunday, December 30, 2012. Visitation was held from 1 p.m. until service time at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 5, 2013, at J.E. Keever Mortuary George Grammer Chapel of Ennis with Reverend Kenneth Cashion officiating. Pallbearers were Larry Gilbert, J.B. Jr. Lowrey, Jim Edd Underwood, and Joe Bob Underwood, Joe Pool, Raymond and Tim Armstrong, and Elmer Holley. Honorary pallbearer was Willie Minor. Interment followed in Elm Branch Cemetery of Bardwell under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary, Inc. George was born in Bardwell, Texas, on June 12, 1925, to George and Bessie Grammer, Sr., the eldest of four children. He grew up in Bardwell, and graduated from Bardwell High School. He met his beautiful bride Mildred Ruth Hearron on the school bus one morning. As he put it, he was just minding his own business when she sat down next to him and proceeded to strike up a conversation. As she put it, she had noticed his big blue eyes and his “handsomeness” for weeks, and he had not made a concerted effort to talk to her so she knew she had to make the first move or it was never going to happen! On October 15, 1944, he married the love of his life Mildred Ruth Hearron, and the rest is history. They made their home in Bardwell before moving to Ennis in 1992. George was a jack of many trades including owning Grammer Real Estate and owning Bardwell Co-Op Gin. He was also a tax accountant. He served as mayor of Bardwell, as president of the Elm Branch Cemetery Association, was founder of the Bardwell Water Supply Company, and was president of Bardwell Community Center. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis and First Methodist Church of Avalon.

He is survived by daughter Dee Grammer Holley of Dallas; brother Chester Wayne Grammer of Cedar Creek; and sister Willie Mae Deittrick of Austin; grandchildren Jamie Holley and Lindsey and husband Ryan Clemmensen. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Mildred Grammer on June 27, 2001; and sister Pauline Simmons. The family requests donations be made to Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 200906011; or by phone (800) 272-3900. With deepest sympathy, Betty Macalik Financial Secretary Lodge 25, Ennis —SPJST—

tured speaker for the entire event, serves a small congregation about 100 miles east of Prague. Rick Steves, in his article, Prague and The Czech Republic, paraphrased it this way, “Are you a genealogical freak or do you just want to know a bit about your ancestors? Are you searching for your ancestral home or would you just like to travel the unbeaten path? Reverend Jan Dus may just be the person to help you. Jan enjoys helping travelers connect with locals in small villages of eastern, southern and northern Bohemia and Moravia.
