Congrats, Agents and Members!

It was wonderful to see many members at the awards banquet held

on Saturday, January 26 at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple. Congratulations to each and every member, lodge, youth club, and sales agent that received an award. The banquet recognized and celebrated 25 local lodge fraternalists of the year; 45 local lodges who achieved incentive award categories; 22 youth clubs; six district youth clubs; seven district top recruiters; and 33 sales agents. Pages 7 through 21 of this week’s Vestnik are filled with Tribute 2012 award winners. Thank you for your efforts. Special congratulations to Patsy Koslovsky of Lodge 47, Seaton on being named State Fraternalist of the Year. Patsy is a lifetime member whose life pretty much revolves around SPJST! Thanks to Patsy for all of her years of service. Best wishes in the national competition. Congratulations, Teresa! We were honored to have 20122013 State King Jerry Pechal draw the winning name—Teresa Sablatura Schilhab—from among hundreds that were received in the “Tell Us How You Would Like To Receive Your Vestnik” response that appeared on the back page of the December 26, 2012, 100th anniversary commemorative Vestnik issue. Responses have been mailed in, called in, emailed, hand delivered to the Home Office, and entered through the website. The form included three ways to receive the Vestnik—by mail, by email, or by both mail and email. The email edition of the Vestnik will begin soon. If you would also like to receive your Vestnik by email, visit www.spjst.org and enter your

information online. You can also scan the QR code on page 22 of this week’s Vestnik to take you to the website page. Congratulations to Teresa, and thanks to everyone who submitted a response. Insurance Department Hosts Agent Training The Home Office meeting room was filled with energy and enthusiasm on Friday, January 25 as 42 sales agents converged for a day of training. Friday is our Vestnik print day, so I could only partake in a short portion of the afternoon, but it was long enough to hear great comments from many agents who attended. Hats off to the Insurance Department for hosting this class and for bringing our sales agents to the Home Office. It’s always a great day when members visit us at the Home Office in Temple. Come on over—your invited anytime! New Czech President elected

Early elections should be held as soon as possible in the Czech Republic, president-elect Miloš Zeman told Czech Television today. Zeman said the center-right government is reliant on LIDEM, an offshoot of the Public Affairs (VV) Party which was never elected. PM Petr Nečas responded that the government is responsible to Parliament, not the president, and will continue as long as it holds a majority in the lower house. Zeman, a leftist candidate, won the Czech presidential elections with 54.8 percent on January 26, receiving half a million votes more than his conservative rival Karel Schwarzenberg. The voter turnout was 59.11 percent. Submitted by, John Kuba Czech Republic Lodge 133, San Antonio —SPJST—

Insurance Department Hosts Agent Training Seminar Friday, January 25, 2013 • SPJST Home Office in Temple, Texas

On Friday, January 25, 2013, the SPJST Insurance Department sponsored a one-day agent seminar at the Home Office in Temple. Forty-two insurance sales agents participated in this event that was scheduled in conjunction with the SPJST Awards Banquet held on Saturday, January 26. The purpose of the seminar was to assist sales agents as they write new business and launch the Friendship 2013 marketing campaign. The seminar began with the Pledge of Allegiance and opening prayer. Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek gave the agents a fraternal welcome encouraging agents with lodge participation and a brief overview of the Model Lodge Program. Vice President Gene McBride then gave the agents an Insurance Department welcome. He also reviewed the agenda for the day and thanked the corporate sponsors who sponsored the break times throughout the day. Sponsors included Allen Bailey and Asso-

ciates, Paper Graphics Printing, EMSI, Doss Sales and Company, Optimum Re Reassurance Company, and Portamedic. In addition, Allen Bailey and Associates sponsored the agent seminar luncheon. The agent seminar reviewed the new application process and discussed top reasons new applications may be delayed. This was presented by New Business Technician Donica Zabcik. SPJST Underwriter Doni Powell discussed the application underwriting process and SPJST underwriting guidelines and presented to the agents underwriting examples why applications are delayed, rated, or denied. Next, agents received an agent persistency questionnaire and were led in discussions about understanding and ways to improve agent persistency. The presenter was Business Development and Marketing Manager Don Strickland. Financial Secretary Roy Vajdak discussed with the agents several up-

dates from the Accounting Department which included billing statements, identification of nearly 6,000 SPJST members that have unknown or incorrect mailing addresses and the near future acceptance of credit card payments for insurance premiums. Grant Borgholthaus, Field Representative from Portamedic, spoke on his company’s paramed exam service to SPJST and the good working relationship with the SPJST Underwriting Department. Vice President Gene McBride introduced the Insurance Department staff to the agents and spoke of their dedication to assisting agents and members with their insurance needs. The day concluded with an entertaining way to provide excellent customer service by SPJST member Butch Doss of Doss Sales and Company. Part of his guitar and harmonica “gig” was recorded and is presented on the SPJST Facebook page.

Vice President Gene McBride then unveiled the Friendship 2013 marketing campaign. Friendship 2013 is a concerted effort to reach out to the members of SPJST and grow it from the inside out through our relationships. He discussed the monthly and end of the year awards to the agents and lodges for meeting these goals and reaching 2,100 new members. If each SPJST member invites just one new person to join this year, these goals can be met. The agent seminar encouraged agents with good fellowship, good food, and good fun and a renewed focus on the insurance writing process along with its effect on the members and new members of SPJST. The priority of the SPJST Insurance Department is to reach out to members and meet their changing insurance needs along with the changing insurance needs of their family. —SPJST—

To compete, you must be at least 16 years of age and a member in good standing. Teams will consist of five players – any combination of men and women. If you will be bowling and are a member of more than one of these organizations, you must choose which one you will be representing. The entry fee will be $20 per bowler, or $100 per team. Walk-ins will be registered from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on the day of the tournament provided lanes are available. Bowling will start at 12 noon. The bowling center has 36 lanes available, so entries will be on a first come, first served basis. Any entries arriving after the lanes are all

filled will be placed on a waiting list in the event of a cancellation. Awards will be awarded to the top three women and the top three men for high series and high game. The traveling trophy will go to the fraternal with the highest average. To qualify for this trophy, a fraternal must have a minimum of three teams entered in the tournament. All scores will be calculated with handicap included. This will give all participants an equal opportunity to win an award. Make plans now to join us in New Braunfels on February 9 for a day of fun and fraternalism.

100 Pennies Scholarship Drive Although the deadline to apply for a scholarship was February 1, the 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive continues through March 31. Thanks to all lodges and members who have contributed to this worthy cause to assist members in furthering their education and helping them to achieve career goals. Keep those pennies coming in. Any amount will be graciously accepted.

Join Hands Day May 4 marks the date for this year’s Join Hands Day. Join Hands Day is a program of the American Fraternal Alliance. The 127-year-old organization unites not-for-profit fraternal benefit societies that operate in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Canada. We hope your lodge has discussed plans for a project to involve youth, adults, and/or other organizations to make improvements in your community. Projects from previous years include baking for the needy, cemetery clean-up, highway beautification, assisting veterans and senior citizens programs and conducting a variety of fixup and refurbishing projects or you can go online at www.joinhandsday.org for more ideas. The Home Office again will offer the $100 incentive to all lodges who register their project with the home office. You can do this by completing the Join Hands Day flyer and returning it to the SPJST Home Office. This year American Fraternal Alliance is asking not to register your projects on their website prior to JOIN HANDS DAY. They are asking that you share stories of your projects, including and especially, photos on their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/fraternalalliance. SPJST Tasty Traditions Cookbook Sales have been tremendous over the past year. We still have a number of

cookbooks for sale. If you have not received your edition, you can still place your order online at www.spjst.org or you may call the Home Office to place an order. The books include 700 pages and approximately 1,400 recipes. When ordering through the mail, there will be a $3 charge for shipping/postage per book.

Happy Valentine’s Day – February 14 Each year in February, across the country, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. Although the tradition of St. Valentine began many years earlier, Americans probably began exchanging hand-made Valentine’s in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland started mass producing valentine cards in America. According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated one billion valentine cards are sent each year, making Valentine’s Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. President’s Message to Attendees of the 2013 SPJST Awards Banquet By Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen; fraternal brothers and sisters. Welcome to Temple, Texas. And, welcome to this: The 20th Annual SPJST Lodge Recognition and Incentive Awards Presentation and Banquet. Wow! Twenty years it’s been . . . As it was then, the aim of the program remains the same: To increase membership in SPJST and member participation in local lodges. Congratulations to all of the winning lodges and winning sales agents in attendance today. Thanks, in large part, to your efforts, SPJST remains strong. Strong fraternally. And strong financially. Let me bring some perspective to that statement: Twenty years ago, at December 31, 1993, SPJST recorded assets of $100,430,000. I remember very well achieving that landmark. Attaining $100 million in assets represented a noteworthy plateau for our organization — a plateau that it took 96 years to achieve. As of December 31, 2013, — twenty years later — SPJST recorded assets of $226,374,150 reflecting a $7.3 million gain in assets over 2012. In essence, the size of SPJST has more than doubled in the last 20 years. With regards to life insurance, SPJST recorded $324,891,000 of life insurance in force at year end 1993. At year-end 2012, the Society recorded approximately $957 million of life insurance in force — or roughly a three-fold increase. Twenty years ago, the certificate count at year-end 1993 stood at 49,222. Total certificate count at year-end 2012 was 51,579. By that measure, we’ve also grown — not by leaps and bounds — but incrementally. Even so, I’ll take incremental growth — provided that it is quality growth — over mere quantity every time. Here’s the point: SPJST remains a living, growing, and evolving fraternal benefit society. Through 105 lodges throughout the State of Texas, SPJST offers products and services that offer protection, that celebrate achievement, and that bring people together. Insuring and enriching lives. That’s what we’re all about. Our job as SPJST sales agents and lodge leaders is to convey that message to others. 2012 was an eventful year. It was a convention year. And, it was a year in which SPJST fared surprisingly well — from a financial perspective — in spite of the challenges dealt out by the economy, operational issues, and in some areas, even the weather. SPJST posted a net gain in assets for 2012 of $7.3 million. At year-end 2012, SPJST posted investments, excluding mortgages, of $210,376,000. That amount reflected an

investment gain of $19,598,830 for the 12-month period. That represents an annualized return of 6.54 percent. I also would like to point out that the average annualized return over the past four years has been 10.22 percent. The overall credit quality of SPJST’s investment portfolio has improved considerably over the past four years. Thanks to SecretaryTreasurer Mikeska for his part in overseeing these dramatic improvements. Much of SPJST’s growth over the past four years has come in the form of capital appreciation. For the sake of this discussion, let’s say that SPJST purchases an investment bond for $500,000; furthermore, let’s say the bond appreciates in value to $550,000. Even as that represents a 10 percent increase in the growth of the asset, that doesn’t translate to liquid assets that can be used in the Society’s daily operations. Rather, these are the assets that back the financial integrity of all our life insurance products and annuities. Any excess capital appreciation provides an additional measure of financial strength and security. The funds that actually “pay” the interest on our members’ annuities or universal life insurance certificates are derived from the interest that is paid on the bonds that are specifically allocated to each interest-sensitive product that we sell. And, in the current interest rate environment, those spreads are razor thin. SPJST’s mortgage loans totaled $23,180,000. There have been no foreclosures over the past four years and none pending. In the area of life insurance, sales persistency has improved significantly in recent years. The stats for 2012 were significantly improved over 2011 also: Certificates issued were up nearly 20 percent — from 1,046 in 2011 up to 1,253 in 2012. Insurance issued increased by 27 percent — from $54,600,000 in 2011 up to $69,490,000 in 2012. Earned premium was up a healthy 35 percent in 2012 — from $532,146 in 2011 up to $788,526 in 2012. While new production remains an important element in the growth of SPJST, “persistency” — which is the percentage of insurance that does not lapse and remains in force — represents a critical factor in our success and one which the SPJST Supreme Lodge continues to address vigorously. The real and dynamic growth, I believe, in the coming years for SPJST will be through our concerted efforts — fraternal as well as financial — to grow organically. When I say “organically,” I am referring to the new insurance that is written by servicing of our existing members,

their families, and extended families as well as circles of friends. In fact, it is this emphasis on taking care of our existing membership base that comprises the heart of SPJST’s “Friendship 2013” marketing thrust and incentive program. SPJST’s business philosophy — to work to establish a reputation for quality among members, sales agents, employees, and management remains an ongoing initiative. SPJST member involvement in our fraternal order has remained consistently strong over the last generation and over the preceding year. We are moving forward with the implementation of the SPJST Model Lodge program which addresses 10 specific areas of lodge management including the important role that life insurance and service after the sale play in the total SPJST experience. Highlights of the SPJST's statewide youth program included the youth club training workshops in the spring, the spring youth leaders retreat in Temple, the Leaders-in-Training retreat at Cooper Farm, seven District Youth Achievement Days, SPJST Summer Camp, and State Youth Achievement Day. Sincere thanks to the statewide network of District Youth Counselors, youth leaders, and supportive parents and grandparents that help to field SPJST’s youth program. Moving on, the SPJST Scholarship Program continued to provide a collegiate complement to the Youth Program as the Society awarded a total of $64,000 in scholarships in the spring and at State Youth Achievement Day in August. Within the fraternal realm, SPJST and its lodges recorded multiple successes in 2012. Local lodges hosted a wide range of family-oriented activities, including community service projects, charitable fundraisers, school events, cultural and heritage programs, recreational events, dances, picnics, musical and choral groups. The pages of the Vestnik — our weekly newspaper — helped to document the wonderful fraternal story that is the SPJST. It was great to see up close and personal and through the pages of the Vestnik so many lodges making headlines in 2012. My compliments to Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny on marking the newspaper’s 100th anniversary this year with a special commemorative issue. In 2012, SPJST continued to show strong support for a multitude of annual public events, most notably helping to sponsor such events as the National Polka Festival in Ennis, Westfest in West, Heritage Day at the Texas State Fair, and the Slavic Heritage Festival in Houston. The Society also offered its support to an array of cultural and heritage groups including Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS), Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT), Texans of Czech Ancestry (TOCA), Czech Heritage Society of Texas, Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange, Czech Center

Museum Houston, and Sokol. It was an honor for us to work with and to be affiliated with these fine organizations and the projects that they championed. This idea of fraternalism — of doing good for each other and for our communities — is a powerful motivator once we allow the fraternal spirit to guide us in our mission — in our lodges, in our youth clubs, in our district and state activities, and in the affairs of the SPJST Supreme Lodge and Home Office. Moving forward into 2013 and beyond, SPJST will continue to support and encourage our lodges to support the SPJST Scholarship Fund, Czech Heritage Museum in Temple, and SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm. Likewise, we will encourage our lodges and youth clubs to identify with meaningful causes that will help to define the character of their lodge locally. Details of the Model Lodge program will be mailed out to lodge presidents in the coming days. Subsequent articles in the Vestnik and lodge visits will help us to communicate the program to all members. I noted earlier that today’s event represents the 20th installment of the SPJST’s lodge recognition and incentive program. From a management standpoint, I want to see us work together in the coming months to bring new definition and renewed excitement to our incentive program as that relates to establishing challenging, yet attainable incentives for everyone involved — from our sales agents to our lodges, lodge officers, youth clubs and youth club members. We’re expecting on an outstanding year in terms of sales and growth. The Friendship 2013’s emphasis on servicing the needs of our existing members, their families and their friends is right for the times. Adding to that, 2013 will be a great opportunity to buy additional coverage. One of the reasons is that guidelines which govern the amount of reserves that the Society must set aside with increase in 2014. As such, we are anticipating the price for multiple SPJST life insurance products to increase next year. In closing and as we progress forward in 2013 and beyond, may each of us subscribe to the highest ideals of fraternalism in all that we do. It really is as simple — and as challenging — as subscribing to the principles of the Golden Rule and that is to do unto others as we would have them do unto us. Fraternalism is built on the simple, time-honored idea of doing good: First for each other -- as members and brothers and sisters united; and doing good for the communities that we seek to serve. Thank you brothers and sisters for your attention and for your devotion and for your service. —SPJST—

We began the meeting by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and President Marlene Bass welcomed new members. We had no guests this day. Minutes were read and approved, and the financial report was given by Pauline Morbitzer. Pauline announced that it was time to pay dues for 2013, and they will remain at $4 again for the year. Also as Sunshine Chairman Pauline announced that she sent a cards to Lupe Esparza on the loss of her brother. Lucille also reported that her daughter, Linda Horner is still receiving treatment. Later on in the meeting, we found out that Catherine Ann Davis was scheduled for back surgery the following week. Just know that your lady friends in the Circle are praying for you daily during these difficult times. As part of our efforts to make a difference to those less fortunate, donations were collected and delivered in December for several organizations. This month, we will be sending cash donations to the Tarrant Area Food Bank and also to Meals on Wheels. Our members are so generous and always willing to give from the heart. In that manner, our fairy godmother, Gloria Farek, had gifts for everyone once

again. Where she finds the goodies she brings is a mystery. Thank you, Gloria. New/old officers for the year were elected. They are President Marlene Bass, Treasurer/Sunshine Chairman Pauline Morbitzer, and Secretary Joan Shropshire. Evelyn Scaff was welcomed as vice president, and we appreciate her willingness to serve. The four of us look forward to sitting at the front table for another year (smile). We will try to make the meetings enjoyable, and that's our solemn promise (another smile). So . . . beginning in February, we will be wearing red or pink. It will be Valentine’s Day, you know. Thanks went out to our lovely hostesses for their work in the kitchen. There were Bessie Ellsworth, Lisa Ellsworth, Patti Williams, and Gloria Farek and granddaughter Margaret Willingham. Lunch was delicious as usual with many good offerings. Oh and we can’t leave out Garland Ellsworth the official cleaner-upper! As a plug for the SPJST Tasty Traditions cookbook, I brought “Bus Driver Potatoes” which turned out really good. The books are huge and interest-

ing as well. There are a few recipes in there from olden days that I’m not too sure about! “Happy Birthday” was sung to Lorinda Manasco, Bessie Ellsworth, Theresa Clay, Lois Smith, Catherine Ann Davis, Robert Kurtnick, Darlene Tompkins, Mona Lee Hattendorf, and Kitty Rippin. Several months ago, we added a sharing or memory time for the birthday celebrants. Snippets from this month’s honorees was interesting to hear. Theresa Clay has known Bessie Ellsworth and Pauline Morbitzer for about 70 years. They went to school together as youngsters and were known as the Three Musketeers. On Sunday nights, they would attend dances at the lodge and dance with each other. Catherine Ann Davis was blessed with family, and I think she said either she or the boys looked better at night during the war when there were “black-outs.” A very comical lady. Lorinda Manasco has been friends with Pauline Morbitzer for 20 years. Robert Kurtnick went to Mt. Carmel as some of the others in the group. He is an ex-Marine and worked as an engineer at GD. Mona Lee Hat-

tendorf was born on the North Side and has a great family and is an inspiration to me personally. Lois Smith was Postmaster at the Ridglea station, a Mott’s Manager, attends St. Thomas Catholic Church and can remember the polka dance fests at the lodge. Kittie Rippin’s parents were members of Lodge 1, Fayetteville near La Grange, Texas when she was young. She was in the Navy and knows how to fly. Bessie Ellsworth just said, “Ditto Theresa.” She and Garland celebrated 55 years of marriage this month. There were door prizes, a lunch blessing, good camaraderie, and bingo. Then, last of all, a surprise gift was given to Joyce Tesar for her many years of service to the lodge and to the Ladies Circle. She was always faithful in her duties, and we thank you Joyce for your hard work. As always, we would love to have anyone visit our meeting and enjoy the fellowship that we have. You are welcome. Fraternally yours, Joan Simek Shropshire Secretary —SPJST—

Youth Department presents February updates Dear Youth Leaders,

Youth Development Workshop This year’s Youth Development Workshop will be a one-day workshop for all youth club members. The workshop will be held on Saturday, February 23, 2013, at the SPJST Home Office in Temple, Texas starting at 10:30 a.m. Parents are invited to attend the informative sessions. We’ll be hosting the workshop at the Home Office in an effort to have them in a central location and make it closer for all participants. In our first session, youth will be broken up into four smaller groups. Adult leaders will review the importance of each officer position: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Reporter, Flag Bearer and Sergeant-at-Arms. Leaders will review the officers duties to the youth. In our second session, youth will be broken up into two groups -- boys and girls. The groups will go into different rooms and the topic for the boys will be, “Bullying Behavior in Boys and What to Do About It”. The girls group topic will be “Relational Aggression in Girls Bullying Behavior and What to Do About It”. Our youth are great kids and our District Youth Counselors do an exceptional job with our youth at camp. I want to arm our youth with knowledge about dealing with the subject of bullying. They face these problems in other places such as school, team sports just to name a few. This will help them to understand how to handle those situations that unfortunately happen in today's society. The third and final sessions will be

on scrapbooking. Guest speaker Barbara Barabas will give the youth tips on how to organize materials before starting the project. She will also share some creative ideas, color themes, placement of photos, etc. This will be very informative for all youth and youth club scrapbook committee members. Between the sessions, we will have some games for the youth and lunch will be provided by Jason’s Deli and we will have lunch box meals for kids. There will be a choice of ham, turkey or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, chips, pickle and cookie.

Good luck with your youth club’s participation in the Friendship 2013 Membership Program. President’s Volunteer Service Award The SPJST Youth Program is sponsoring the President’s Volunteer Service Awards for all SPJST youth who are eligible to receive the awards. 2012, through December 31, 2012. Volunteer Service Tracking Forms are available from the State Youth Director on the SPJST Youth website. Forms must be returned by February 28 to the State Youth Director.

Eye Glasses and Hearing Aid Donations Please keep those old eye glasses and hearing aid donations coming in. This is an ongoing collection effort that we have been doing for some time now. Thanks to your efforts, we have already helped many people through this program. The actual program is being run through the Houston Eyeglass Center and the University of Houston. The reconditioned eyewear is redistributed throughout the United States and the world and the repairable cell phones are given to various care shelters throughout the country.

Pull Tabs for Ronald McDonald House The continuing support of sending pull tabs in for the Ronald McDonald House is also a worthy charity that we have been supporting. They use the money from the sale of the bottle tabs to buy gas for their transportation vehicle and to buy much needed supplies for the house. I strongly encourage all of the SPJST youth clubs to save pull tabs for this worthy and ongoing proj-

ect. Your youth club will receive a thank you letter from the Ronald McDonald House and the knowledge that they helped someone in need that really needed help. Please mark your donations clearly so I can make sure your group gets the proper recognition that it deserves. Youth Leader Retreat Plans are for the retreat to start on Saturday, March 9 at 10 a.m. at Hilton Garden Inn in Temple. Youth leaders may choose to stay overnight and leave Sunday, March 10. I am working on lining up a guest speaker for our meeting and having Business Development/Marketing Manager Don Strickland speak to you about marketing strategies in promoting our youth clubs.

All youth leaders and their assistants are encouraged to attend. If you are planning to bring a spouse or guest, please let me know, and I will work with you on making arrangements. We’re going to cover a lot of ground on Saturday’s program, including Friendship 2013 Incentive Program, training skits, and YAD preparation. In addition to covering all of the regular topics such as rule book changes and camp, we’ll also be addressing any questions that you may have about the youth program. 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive Thanks to all of the young people and youth clubs who have contributed to this wonderful project. All young people who donate at least $2 will re-

ceive two merit points. All young people who donate at least $5 will also receive a certificate. March 31, 2013 is the deadline to receive credit.

Mark Your Calendar: May 4 is Join Hands Day Our goal for 2013 is to have 50 or more lodges participate. What can your youth club do? Some of the great projects from past years included baking for the needy, cemetery clean-ups, highway beautification, assisting veterans and senior citizens programs, conducting a variety of fix-up and refurbishing projects and fundraiser for your local volunteer fire department. You’ve still got plenty of time to decide what you want to do in 2013. The main thing — at this point — is committing to doing something. When

coming up with ideas for your project try to do something that will be noticed by the public. If you have any questions on this, please contact me. Again, this year, the Supreme Lodge will offer a $100 incentive to local SPJST lodges to be used in developing and/or promoting their project.

I hope that all youth that finished their 8th grade year through graduating seniors will participate as LIT’s.

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Leader sets Q&A meeting

To All Interested Parties: I will be having a meeting on Monday, February 18, 2013, at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall starting at 5:30 p.m. We have had several new members join in the last year and as we all know, Youth Achievement Day (YAD), merit points, camp, and the club in whole can all be a confusing topic for new people and even some seasoned members. Písně větru or Songs of the Wind now available

Greetings: I am writing to bring to your attention a book recently published in Prague that makes use of a combination of Czech and English. Písně větru or Songs of the Wind is a light-hearted, humorous fantasy novel. Czech and English stand in for the primary languages of the fantasy setting. The heroine (who relates the tale in the form of a diary) is bilingual, but feigns no knowledge of English with indifferent success. The other main characters speak primarily Czech, but have some knowledge of English. The tale includes many different levels of language. A third person narrator, who relates some of the adventures of the main characters without the heroine, speaks in standard spisovna Czech. The main characters speak hovorova Czech, but their accents and manner of speech vary. Some use a very educated language,

while others use a more common tongue. There are instances of Ostravian and Slovacka accents. The heroine herself uses a “foreigner’s Czech” that combines book-learned archaisms with grammar mistakes and unusual formulations. English is treated similarly, although Czech is the primary language of the book in roughly proportions of 60:40.

The majority of the book is taken up with conversation. In some instances, characters will relate the same story multiple times, shifting between languages or combinations of languages each time, and losing or confusing meaning with each iteration. Ultimately, only the reader knows what has really been said. I am a Montanan, who learned Czech in 1994 at age 22 and spent seven years completing a doctorate of botany in Brno. The main characters are modeled very closely upon classmates of mine and reproduce their actual manners of speaking, accents, and vocabularies. Here are links with excerpts from the book and examples of the artwork:

A to mám přeloženy nějaké dvě desítky knih z angličtiny. No a pak přišla čeština, pak zase angličtina, a pak všechno dohromady. I felt a hand on my shoulder. I spun around to find myself facing a hideously scarred Corani, armed with a staff. Fear and anger surged up in me, and I cried, »Neodvaž se na mne sáhnouti, Korháči, nechceš-li to litovati hořce!« He replied, »Já si tu sednu, dokud se neuklidníš, jo?« His voice was surprisingly pleasant, warm and flecked with soothing melodies. He seated himself upon the sand and proceeded to calmly twirl his staff between his fingers. I was stunned speechless. Eventually, I managed, »Tak, možná jsem přeháněla…« To this he replied, »Já se nezlobím. Viděl jsem, co se ti stalo.« »Tak . . . tak ty jsi Jar?« His blondered hair was in two long braids, a style I had not seen before. »Jo. Pojď. Stará se o mě jeden kněz…« »Kněz?…« Clearly I had reached a Jarin village, Gemalan. »Ilvira?« »Ne. Edra.« »Edra! Jest možné v době této?« And Sarkum is the only other Gemalan village with a keep… I was fairly sure… »Co máš proti Edrovi?« his voice grew colder, had a defensive edge that was almost frightening.

Přišel podzim a s ním čekání. We crested the hill and started down the other side. Siegfried exclaimed, »Podívej se, Matyldo, na ty kytky tam!« He picked her a bouquet. She began to gaze at him with limpid eyes. »Opovaž se na ni šáhnout!« growled Ilviromila under her breath. I could not think what should be so fascinating about riding skirts. Any horsewoman owneth one. I own one myself! »Jé!« Matylda was delighted. »Jako princezny! Adéla mi koupí koně, až

bude bohatá, ale já nemám ty šatečky… koupil bys mi šatečky?« she asked Siegfried sweetly. The rest of us shook our heads in disgust. »To jsem neřekl!« Siegfried exclaimed. »Ale… ale možná jo… tobě by to slušelo… moc… V Dyrise mají taky obrovský kamenný most přes Eryn. »Musí všechno koranského být nesmysl?« asked Racek sadly and softly. I had not meant to hurt him… not that. I ducked my head and felt guilty and unhappy. »Je taky v Dyrise jeden velký kruhovitý chrám a tam je všechno samé zlato. Mají takové divné sukně, na kterých jsou řemínky ze zlata a ony jsou… no prostě takové… hodně… jemná látka to je, no prostě, taková docela hodně jemná a zajímavá jakási takové oblečky a víš, mají ještě druhou část – nahoře…« »Nahoře? Čepička?« asked Matylda with delight. No, a pak jsem měl najednou text já. Bude to už dost přes rok…

Budu se cvičit, abych…« Nolan burst in disrespectfully, »A ty si myslíš, že po tobě budou házet kamenama?« (The horror, the horror of his lowborn grammar! Two stones? Just two?! Ne!) »Strčí tě do pytle jako mladého berana!« This was Ilviromila’s cue to begin berating Nolan, »Nolane, prosím tě, mlč!« »Už zase s těmi ovcemi,« Racek shook his head in disgust. »Obdivuhodná, vskutku obdivuhodná a mistrně formulovaná definice!« I said with some exasperation. . .« Racek seemed reluctant to talk.

Help Wanted

»Tak co?« Ilviromila asked. »Budou otrokáři?« »Co se ti vlastně zdálo? Viděls Lískulku?« demanded Nolan. »Já si to dobře nepamatuji…« insisted Racek. »…asi to nemělo význam…« řekl Racek váhavě. »Ale třeba jo a my ti to pomůžeme vyložit,« offered Ilviromila. —SPJST—
