Youth Development Workshop Youth from across the state will gather at the SPJST Home Office this Saturday for a Youth Development Workshop. The day begins with registration at 10 a.m. The workshop begins at 10:30 a.m. and continues until 3:30 p.m. Lots of great activities are on the agenda, and it will be a great day to meet new State Youth Director Lynette Talasek! Jason’s Deli will serve lunch, and five lucky attendees will win $20 Academy gift cards. Register today by calling the Youth Department at (800) 727-7578. Ordinary Words and Common Sense Thanks to past State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Chester Jenke for sharing this. Chester says, “Keep that brain working. See if you can figure out what these seven words all have in common.”
1. Banana 2. Dresser 3. Grammar 4. Potato 5. Revive 6. Uneven 7. Assess
Give it another try . . . Look at each word carefully. You’ll kick yourself when you discover the answer. No, it is not that they all have at least two double letters . . . Answer—In all of the words listed, if you take the first letter, place it at the end of the word, and then spell the word backwards, it will be the same word. Did you figure it out? No? Then, share this with more people and stump them as well!
Win Orel! Ten adorable Orels flew into the Vestnik/Communication Department last week. These little guys are now waiting to go to their homes — maybe yours! We have a very special contest for those on Facebook who have “liked” SPJST’s Facebook page. We will give away these 10 Orels to 10 fans who “like” our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/spjst. So if you are on Facebook and have not “liked” our page, please do so today. One Orel will be given away each day from February 19 through February 28. Good luck! Watch our Facebook page for winners’ names. —SPJST—

The youth club will then present an Easter program followed by an Easter egg hunt for all ages. Lodge 15 Buckholts reports on February meeting
For once, it was not freezing cold for our scheduled SPJST meeting day so we met as usual at the lodge hall. President Doug Williams called the meeting to order at 5 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Hilda Burtis followed by a moment of silence in memory of our departed members. All officers were present for the meeting. The secretary and treasurer both read their reports and were approved as read. In old business, the Hee Haw Show was a great success which was a fundraiser for our local fire department. The presentation of the SPJST
check to the fire department by District Two Director Jesse Pospisil as well as his personal check were greatly appreciated. Longtime faithful member Hilda Burtis celebrated her 97th birthday on February 6. We congratulated her, and all joined in on singing “Happy Birthday.” She said she was our very first secretary when our lodge was first organized. She has been a member for over 75 years. In new business, the District Two Spring Meeting will be held at Lodge 80, Holland on March 17. Be sure to mark your calendar. The vice president informed us about all of SPJST’s upcoming events. For anyone who feels lucky at dominoes, there will be an SPJST Straight Domino Tournament held at Lodge 47, Seaton on March 2. You must preregister before Monday, February 25. He encouraged all high school seniors who are SPJST members to submit an application for the Fraternal Alliance Of Texas Scholarship. For more information, contact Chester Jenke (210) 413-3053. Join Hands Day will be on May 4 this year so we need to start making plans for that. In looking at our list of Lodge 15 members, so many do not have their current address on file. Some are even listed as “unknown.” We intend to research everyone’s address to bring them up-to-date. The most important event coming up is Valentine’s Day — according to women! This is a chance to express your love and appreciation for all we do. Valentines have been around since the 1840s when Esther Howland started mass production. According to the Greeting Card Association, one billion valentine cards are sent each year so remember your loved one on this day. We missed our faithful visitor Regina Peevey at the meeting. Lamerle Zajicek reported that she has her paint and brush ready to go as soon as the weather clears up, and the sun shines for her to paint the mural on the lodge building. We are all looking forward to that. Lamerle Zajicek made the motion that we adjourn, seconded by Derrick Ruzicka. Motion carried. Door prizes were awarded followed by a delicious meal. The next meeting will be on March 11. We hope to see you there. Fraternally, Dorothy Tomascik, Secretary —SPJST—

Lodge 24, Cyclone hosts successful Mardi Gras party
SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone met on a wet winter night in the lodge home, Flag Hall, for the monthly meeting. The hall did not sustain any damage from the storm on Sunday morning. However, several members did have trouble. Maybe the SPJST Lodge 24 Mardi Gras party the night before had caused the storm to veer away. We are mindful of our neighbors’ and their losses. The party was fun and earned a profit for the lodge and the youth club. We are indebted to Pauline Hoelscher, Alice Hoelscher, and Leroy and Patsy Hoelscher for the valuable help. Without them, we would have been sunk. Cook Jason Hoelscher did a yeoman’s duty in cooking the gumbo along with Leroy Hoelscher. Prize winners were: Academy gift card - Ed Coufal; 32inch television - Dr. Barbara Procter; 15-inch laptop computer - David Frei; Day-at-the-Spa - Kacir Construction; and B-Dell’s Fire and Ice Dinner Frank Sodek. Children’s award winners were: Kindle Fire - Seth Ray; $50 Walmart Gift Card - Kinsey Hargrove; $50 Academy Gift Card - Hannah Procter; and $5 GoGo’s Cup Cakes Shelby Bruggman. We appreciate everyone who purchased tickets and contributed to the silent auction and gun raffle. The winner of the raffle was Daniel Wilde. Also, the work of Brenda and Mark Maddux was outstanding. The meeting was called to order by President Daniel Wilde. We had the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silent prayer for sick and deceased members. The minutes were read by Margaret Mikeska, and Wilbert Mikeska gave his last bar report. Assistant Youth Leader Brenda Maddux gave the youth report, and Linda Wilde gave the treasurer’s report. The youth met on Sunday, February 10 and had 15 members and nine adults present. They have moved their Join Hands Day to be on the Special Olympics Day. Youth Development Workshop will be on February 23. Three are going to Leaders-in-Training June 14 to 16 at Cooper Farm. Corpus Christi trip is August 9 to 11. Emma Hoelscher, Shelly Bruggman, and Kalen Ashcraft have birthdays this month. The FAC report was given by Brenda Maddux for Shirley Hoelscher who was on a trip to College Station

Lodge 187 Round Rock to clean hall for Join Hands Day

We started with an open discussion about the Join Hands Day project. The youth club submitted their idea—to do a spring cleaning with repairs and landscaping of our own lodge—the lodge loved it. The Join Hands Day project was voted on by the lodge and passed. Now, Rubie Volek and Jennifer McCarthy will start making a list of all the repairs, cleaning, and landscaping that needs to be done to make our lodge a shining beacon for all to enjoy. We also discussed the vandalism that the lodge has encountered, and we should contact the city by writing a letter and asking them to put up a fence or something to that effect. Afterwards, we discussed the lodge insurance that we have now and about making changes to a new revised insurance policy. It was passed that we revise the policy since that would be best for our lodge. Entertainment was bingo! Thank you to all for bringing the great prizes. Thank you to Jennave Fuchs for passing out the Shining Star pins to all. Birthdays this month is Tom Etheredge on the 3rd. And, Tom and Rose Etheredge celebrated their 29th anniversary on the 4th. PolkaWorks, an Austin-based nonprofit organization, has been awarded an $8,070 community grant from Humanities Texas to help produce a traveling, multi-media exhibit about Texas-Czech culture called “Texas Czechs: Rooted in Tradition.” The exhibit’s co-curators are Lori Najvar and SPJST Lodge 155, Austin member Dawn Orsak. “Texas Czechs: Rooted in Tradition” will document and celebrate the rich culture of Texans of Czech descent. It will educate and engage viewers about Texas Czech settlement in the state and specifically highlight currently-practiced ethnic and community traditions. The exhibit will consist of freestanding panels that feature short essays on cultural topics illustrated by historical and contemporary photography. Artifacts and short documentary films and audio samples will complement the essays. Public programs in conjunction with the exhibit will engage members of other ethnic groups to make connections between cultures and inspire them to learn more about their own heritage. The exhibit will be ready for booking in October 2013 and will travel statewide for at least two years. Preeminent Texas Czech scholar Clint Machann of Texas A&M University says, “It is exciting to contemplate a multi-media traveling exhibit of this kind. The audio and visual components of the exhibit should be effective in attracting a substantial audience - including young people - who want to know more about this important part of Texas history.” Humanities Texas is one of 56 nonprofit state and jurisdictional humanities councils in the United States. As the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, they conduct and support public programs in history, literature, philosophy, and the other humanities disciplines. Learn more at www.humanitiestexas.org. PolkaWorks is a 501(c)(3) organization that recognizes unique cultural traditions through documentaries, photography, and educational programs designed to educate and inspire. Dear Youth Leaders, Greetings from the SPJST Home Office! This is my opportunity to say “Hello!” and let you know how excited I am with the prospect of working with each of you in the coming weeks and months! I look forward to meeting you — as well as your youth club members — when the SPJST Youth Department hosts the 2013 Youth Development Workshop on Saturday, February 23 at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. I realize that Saturday is a busy time for everyone. Even so, I hope that you will consider devoting Saturday morning and afternoon to what promises to be an enjoyable learning and leadership experience. Registration starts at 10 a.m., and the program will start promptly at 10:30 a.m. We will be covering a lot of hot topics related to the Youth Program, goal setting, and leadership. By the end of the day, program participants should have a better understanding of the many and varied aspects of the SPJST Youth Program, the fraternal ideal as well as the importance of taking responsibility for the local youth club. Five lucky door prize winners will receive $20 Academy gift cards in addition to other prize items awarded throughout the day. Lunch is being catered by Jason's Deli. The afternoon session will include a segment on scrapbooking during which time presenter Barbara Barabas will present attendees with a wealth of affordable scrapbooking ideas. Lodge 49, Rowena youth enjoy valentine activities
Happy Valentine’s Day to all of the Vestnik readers—even if it is late! We did have fun at our meeting this past Sunday. Ms. Diana decorated a box, and we put all of our valentines in it. Then, President Sutton pulled them out and called our names. We also ate pizza and exchanged gifts with our secret pals. I got some new pens for school. We had several parents and some little boys and girls there also. Brandon Teplicek —SPJST—

We all discussed the wonderful ideas for the upcoming Joins Hands Day. We voted on spring cleaning, repairing, and landscaping our own lodge. While doing this, we also worked on the Vestnik projects. Afterwards, the kids enjoyed Valentine’s Day treat bags full of candy and other treats. Also, all had an opportunity to make Valentine’s Day cards for family and friends. Birthday this month is for Alexandria Johnson who celebrated her 10th birthday on the 5th. Blessings to all, Jennifer McCarthy —SPJST—

—SPJST—
