Youth Members Perform Beseda at “An Afternoon About Rosie”
On Sunday, February 17, several members from SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth participated in “An Afternoon About Rosie,” a tribute to the late Rose Steinman of Lodge 154. The afternoon started with a fabulous Czech meal of roast pork, sausage and sauerkraut, followed by a program honoring Rosie that included many stories and a performance of the beseda. Current, past, and future youth club members and their families created three dancing circles. All dancers felt honored to perform in memory of such a wonderful woman and SPJST member. Many were wearing beseda costumes handed down from family members, some more than 100 years old. After the program, the band Czech and Then Some played, and the dance floor filled. At the end of the dance, the band had a sing-along with several songs that were Rosie’s favorites. One of the
songs was “A Ja Sam.” Youth club members sang this one loud because it was one of the songs that they learned at summer camp. All Lodge 154 Youth Club members attended the program and many helped with decorating, setting up, and cleaning up. The planning, preparation, and production of the afternoon was a group effort by many who loved Rosie. Although, not physically there, Rosie was definitely there in spirit, and she loved every minute. We’ll miss you dearly, Rosie. Just a note: While looking for pictures for this article, we realized we only had a few of the youth club members with their family in their beseda costumes. Why didn’t we get all the pictures we needed? Because Rosie wasn’t there to take them . . . —Lodge 154, Fort Worth Youth Club —SPJST—

In the spring of 2012, I had the opportunity to participate in a workshop for SPJST youth club members. One of the topics that we explored was the role that SPJST plays in the lives of its members. Simply stated, we were seeking to establish a solid understanding of the role SPJST seeks to fill in the lives of its members and in the life of the community. The question, “Why are we here?” generated a wide assortment of answers. The fact that SPJST touches so many and varied aspects of our lives makes that a challenging question to answer. Think about it: We’re financial. We’re cultural. We’re social.
We’re educational.
We’re recreational.
The strength of SPJST resides in its diversity. The challenge for us — as SPJST lodge leaders — is threefold: First: To recognize our strengths as individuals and as a group; Second: To identify the mission that our lodge seeks to fulfill in the community; and,

Third: To convey that message through our words and by our deeds to our fellow members and to the community at large. Several years ago, I settled on a simple response to the question, “What is SPJST?” “We’re a fraternal benefit society,” I would say. “The basis of the SPJST is to do good. To do good for each other and to do good for the communities that we seek to serve.” Doing good for each other and for the communities that we seek to serve: Therein, I believe, resides the heart of our fraternal mission. Even so, it isn’t a complete explanation. As stated in our SPJST By-Laws, “The purpose of this Society is to provide security for its members and the families of the insured, through the various certificates issued in accordance with the fraternal insurance laws of the State of Texas.” There’s more: “This Society promotes providing a wholesome family environment for the entire family unit and endeavors to promote our common bond by keeping alive and encouraging the cherished traditions of the Czech history, culture, heritage, and family.” It is through the SPJST lodge system that we seek to further define and

Lodge 87 Youth Club Chili Cook-Off Lodge 87, Temple Youth Club hosted its first-ever chili cook-off on Saturday, February 16. The event included good chili, fun, friends, fraternalism, and . . . more good chili! It was a well-organized day that was enjoyed by all who attended. And, I
was also impressed by the adult lodge members who showed up to support the youth. Hats off to Lodge 87, Temple Youth Club, under the leadership of Youth Leader Jennifer Davidson. Watch for pictures in next week’s Vestnik.
It Was An Afternoon About Rosie On Sunday, February 17, the family and lodge of the late Rosie Steinman hosted a very special event — “An Afternoon About Rosie.” The day was perfect and honored her beautifully—complete with a delicious Czech dinner, beseda dancing, and Czech music. The atmosphere was filled with so many memories of Rosie. It was a grand tribute to a very precious woman who was filled with “gumption” and epitomized Czech heritage, family, and fraternalism. Thank you, Rosie’s family, for sharing her with us. See pictures and a special tribute article in next week’s Vestnik. Youth Development Workshop What a wonderful site it was at the SPJST Home Office on Saturday, February 23! The parking lot was filled with vehicles, and the inside meeting room was glowing with energetic, smiling youth club members, leaders, and parents. The Youth Development Workshop covered parliamentary procedure, youth club information, bullying, and scrapbooking. I enjoyed the time that I spent in the workshop. Thanks, SPJST Youth Department, under the direction of new State Youth Director Lynette Talasek, for a great presentation. And, welcome, congratulations, and best wishes, Lynette, in your new position. I look forward to working with you! —SPJST—

March Fraternal Updates
SPJST Model Lodge SPJST lodges are the life and foundation of our Society in the communities that we seek to serve. Lodges bring people together and establish a common bond among men, women, boys, and girls of many backgrounds. Lodges help to keep members informed of the life insurance programs and array of fraternal benefits afforded through membership in SPJST. Finally, it is through service to others and fraternal programming, that lodges help SPJST convey a sense of purpose and tradition. To help lodges achieve these worthy objectives, the SPJST Supreme Lodge has developed the SPJST Model Lodge Program. The program addresses a checklist of 10 best practice areas, identifying standards of performance applicable to our SPJST lodges. The Model Lodge program will be presented in its entirety in the Vestnik, starting in the March 6 issue. The first installment will focus on the importance of establishing a mission and goals for your local lodge. Please know that a complete copy of the Model Lodge Program is being sent under separate cover from President Vanicek to lodge presidents. Watch for it in the coming week. The SPJST Model Lodge program is not connected to any existing SPJST incentive program nor is it considered a competition. Instead, it is our belief that thoughtful consideration and discussion of the components of the Model Lodge Program by lodge officers and in lodge meetings will result in a more meaningful and enjoyable lodge experience for you, your family, our members and the community. If you have any questions please contact me by cell phone (254) 534-0681 or email frankh@spjst.com. 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive As we head into the final month for our 2013 scholarship fund drive, now is the time to send in your contribution to the Home Office. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Since its inception in 1982, the Scholarship Program has presented SPJST scholars with nearly 1,700 scholarships valued at more than $1 million. Our goal this year is to raise $20,000. This is in addition to the allo-
cation the Supreme Lodge has made. Any amount you submit will be greatly appreciated.
State “42” Domino Tournament The State “42” Domino Tournament will be hosted by Lodge 48, Beyersville on April 6. Please remember, all SPJST State Tournaments are open to non-members as well as members. The non-member registration is $15 while the member registration remains $7. You may go online to www.spjst.org and download an entry form to submit to the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator's office. Please preregister by April 1 so I can let the host lodge know how much food to prepare for lunch. We do accept walk-ins as well. We hope to see many of our domino players in attendance along with non-members.
SPJST State Horseshoe Tournament The SPJST State Horseshoe Tournament will be held at Lions Park in Temple on Saturday, May 18. Adults (age 16 and above) will be able to participate. Teams will consist of two persons (two male, two female, or mixed – one male, one female). Preregistration by Monday, May 13 is strongly encouraged so that we will have an idea of how much food to purchase for lunch. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 18 with tournament play starting at 10 a.m. State Tournaments are open to members as well as non-members, so please invite your fellow members as well as non-member friends to participate. The member registration fee is $7 while the non-member registration fee will be $15. For additional information or to preregister, contact me at frankh@spjst.com or by cell phone at (254) 534.0681.
Join Hands Day Hope your plans are coming along for Join Hands Day, which will be observed Saturday, May 4. It is a great way for the youth and adults in your lodge to take on a project together! Many lodges have already made plans for their project. The goal for this year is 55 lodges to participate. Take plenty of pictures and get them to the Vestnik so we may share your project with other members. SPJST again will offer a $100 in-
centive to all lodges who register their project with the Home Office. You can do this by completing the Join Hands Day flyer and returning it to the SPJST Home Office. This year, American Fraternal Alliance is asking not to register your projects on their website prior to Join Hands Day. They are asking that you share stories of your projects, including and especially, photos on their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/fraternalalliance. If you need ideas or additional information for planning your project, please contact me at frankh@spjst.com or phone me (254) 534-0681. You may also visit the Join Hands Day website for ideas. Bloomin’ Temple Festival The Bloomin’ Temple Festival will be held in Temple on Saturday, May 11. Please make plans to attend for a good time! All proceeds from this event will benefit the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center in Temple. For additional information or to volunteer with the car show, please contact David (254) 534-0809 or Melanie (254) 534-0807; email melaniez@vvm.com; or visit www.spjst.org.
End of Summer Getaway Due to popular demand, good times await you at the Corpus Christi Getaway. This event gets bigger and better each year. Chris Rybak will again perform on Friday night and all the evening activities at the Aloha Party. The theme for Saturday night will be a tribute to the “Groovy Seventies.” In addition to last year’s events, there is another golf tournament planned for Friday, August 9 at one of the local golf clubs. Watch for additional details as they become available. The Fraternal Department is working hard to make your weekend more enjoyable. Start making plans now to join us on August 9 to 11 for a fun-filled weekend. This year, rooms have been blocked in the tower (front section) at Holiday Inn Emerald Beach. Fraternal Alliance of Texas (FAOT) Bowling Tournament What a great day it turned out to be

on February 9 at Fiesta Lanes in New Braunfels, Texas. Ninety-three participants representing six fraternals in the state of Texas enjoyed a day of fun and fraternalism while raising money for FAOT Scholarships. Bowling, the silent auction, and sales of raffle tickets raised $1,936.69 for this worthy cause. Thanks for your support. If you missed this year’s event, please make plans now to participate on February 8 next year.

convey this purpose. SPJST lodges are the life and foundation of our Society in the communities that we seek to serve. Lodges bring people together, establishing a common bond among men, women, boys and girls of many backgrounds. Lodges help to keep members informed of the life insurance programs and array of fraternal benefits afforded through membership in the SPJST. Finally, it is through service to others and fraternal programming, that lodges help the SPJST convey a sense of purpose and tradition. To help lodges achieve these worthy objectives, the SPJST Supreme Lodge developed the SPJST Model Lodge Best Practices Guide. The guide offers a checklist of 10 “best practice” topics for lodge leaders to consider and discuss with members in building their fraternal program. The 10 sections will be parceled out on a weekly basis in the Vestnik. The first section will appear in next week’s Vestnik and every week thereafter until the guide has been printed in its entirety. Lodge presidents will receive a complete copy of the SPJST Model Lodge Best Practices guide. The guide will also available online at www.spjst.org for members to review or download. The 10 best practice objectives are: 1. Lodge has a clearly defined mission statement and annual calendar of events. 2. Lodge elects a full slate of officers.
3. Lodge meets regularly and meets Home Office reporting requirements. 4. Lodge communicates regularly to its members and the general public. 5. Lodge hosts a variety of events and partners with other groups in the community. 6. Lodge supports an active youth club (where applicable). 7. Lodge records an annual net increase in membership. 8. Lodge has an active sales agent(s). 9. Lodge hosts an annual member appreciation event. 10. Lodge maintains a lodge building (where applicable).
The SPJST Model Lodge Best Practices checklist is not connected to any existing SPJST incentive program nor is it considered a competition. Instead, it is our belief that thoughtful consideration and discussion of the components of the Model Lodge Best Practices guide will result in a more meaningful and enjoyable lodge experience for you, your family, our members and the community. Thank you, lodge leaders, for the important job you are doing and for your willingness to review and embrace the Best Practices presented herein. Please know that the SPJST Model Lodge Best Practices Guide remains a work in progress. I would greatly appreciate your input in any or all of the areas addressed by in the guide. District Two Spring Meeting Sunday, March 17 at Lodge 80, Holland
Just a reminder that our District Two Spring Meeting is coming up in March. The date is Sunday, March 17, 2013. The meeting will be hosted by Lodge 87, Temple, but it will be held at Lodge 80, Holland. We are so happy that we now have one of our lodges that has not hosted a meeting to join in on some of the fun! We would like to encourage more of our lodges in District Two to get more involved. The district officers would like to thank Lodge 80, Holland for being so kind to let us use their lodge hall for the spring meeting. This will be our election of officers,
so if anyone would like to be nominated, just step up and let us know. We will be having an Easter egg decorating contest. This will be for anyone—the young and young-atheart. We have had some of the adults join in on the fun in the past, so let’s see more of you come up with your own ideas. District Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky will have the children do the beseda dance for our entertainment, and we all know that these children do a wonderful job dancing. We will be having door prizes and drawings. I know that Lodge 87 will
do a fine job of giving us a great meal. And, following the meal will be an Easter egg hunt. So mark this on your calendar— March 17—District Two Spring Meeting. Also, since this will be St.

District Six Cemetery Association Receives $1,500 SPJST Allocation
District Six Director Karen Kaspar, far left, presents a check for $1,500 to District Six Cemetery Association President David Bucek of Lodge 151, Wharton, second from left, Secretary-Treasurer Johnnie Hoffman of Lodge 184, Moulton, and Vice President Vlasta Bartos of Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje. The allocation was approved by delegates at the 31st Convention in 2012 to give a maximum of $500 per cemetery annually. The annual allocation will benefit SPJST Cemeteries in Moravia, Shiner, and Velehrad—all located in District Six.
SPJST Moravia Cemetery Receives Historical Marker
The Texas Historical Commission (THC) has recognized SPJST Moravia Cemetery as a significant part of Texas history by awarding it an Official Texas Historic Cemetery Marker. The designation honors SPJST Moravia Cemetery as an important and educational part of local history. A dedication ceremony to commemorate the event will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2013, at the SPJST Moravia Cemetery at 9:30 a.m. The SPJST Moravia Cemetery is located on FM 957 in Moravia, Texas, just north of FM 532. It is located next to the Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Cemetery. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and umbrellas (to shield the sun) to the dedication ceremony. Immigrants from Northeastern Moravia settled in the area presently known as Moravia, Texas. SPJST Lodge Nova Morava, No. 23 was established as a charter lodge of SPJST, a Czech fraternal benefit society, in 1897. Lodge 23 elected Ignac Jalufka,
one of the founders of Moravia, Texas, as its first president. Later, Lodge 23 built a lodge hall which was completed in January of 1914. The SPJST Moravia Cemetery was established by Lodge 23 in 1922. SPJST members provided funeral and burial services in the Czech language. Some funeral services were held in the SPJST lodge hall. Three charter members of Lodge 23 are buried in the SPJST Moravia Cemetery. They are Joseph Trojcak, the first financial secretary of Lodge 23, his wife Anna Trojcak, and Joseph Klapuch. In addition, several veterans from World War I, World War II, and the Persian Gulf War are buried in the SPJST Moravia Cemetery. Three generations of Jurena veterans are buried in the Jurena Family lot. At the present time, the SPJST Moravia Cemetery is part of the SPJST District Six Cemetery Organization. —SPJST—

Ennis Sewing Circle
Ennis Sewing Circle met on Thursday, February 14, 2013, at 10 a.m. Ann Clagett, Irene Prachyl, and I arrived at 9 a.m. to set up and for Ann to decorate for Valentine’s Day. The reason we met later than usual—we were supposed to quilt for Pat Fowler, but she was in Dallas Baylor Hospital. So we met later and did other things. We hope Pat is home now doing well. Since we weren’t quilting, Irene and Ann brought their cutting boards, rotary cutters, different materials, sewing machine, ironing board, and iron. They showed how they cut patterns, sew them, iron and put the squares together. They started a baby quilt which they will finish by July, which is elephant sale and show-andtell month. We will sell chances on the quilt which is a little moneymaker. It was really interesting and enjoyed by all. We all watched, visited, and had coffee; it was very enjoyable. By lunch time, we had 20 members and one guest - Joe Ehrenberger. Irene Prachyl led us in prayer then we enjoyed a most delicious lunch as always. Thank you, all, who set up, cleaned up, took out trash, and I didn’t get your names - sorry! President Dorothy called the meeting to order and installed the new officers. She thanked the outgoing officers and welcomed the new group: President Irene Prachyl; Vice President Ginny Svehlak; Secretary Dolores Vrana; and Treasurer Dorothy Bobalek. President Irene led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and a moment of silence was held for Annie Salik, Janynie Arnold, Wallace Arnold, and Bob Cunningham. Secretary Dolores read the minutes from the last meeting, and Treasurer Dorothy gave her report. Both were approved as read. Ginny Svehlak read a thank you note from Frances Vinkler; a note from Anne Tupy for Libbie Wisniewski, and Agnes Dujka; and a note from Pam Todd for Libbie Elsik and Vickie Kohn for their Christmas gift sacks. It was good to hear from them all. Ginny also read several cute newspaper clippings - Laughing Matters, Coffee Time, Opposites, Where is My Sunday Paper?, Pure Evil, Best Medicine, and the History of Aprons. These were enjoyed by all. We had a good laugh. Thank you, Ginny. You
did good. Sunshine Lady Eleanora read the February birthday celebrants - Anne Tupy, Libbie Wisniewski, and Sidney Bridewell. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Sidney on her 95th birthday, and she went first in line for lunch. I’m sure she will have a wonderful party on February 23 in Dallas. We will be thinking of you, Sidney. Geraldine Valek was thanked for donating two serving spoons and tongs, and a big box of valentine candy. Libbie Vrla was the lucky winner of the candy. The kitchen committee reported that we will be needing plates and coffee creamer for the next meeting. I didn’t catch if anyone volunteered to bring these. President Irene showed how she made a cute sewing travel kit from a used plastic flossing box which was really neat. She also showed how she made a pair of pillow cases, trimmed in the same material of one of her quilts. She then rolled the quilt up and stored it in the pillow case. That way, you know what quilt is where. Irene also typed and handed out the new telephone committee list. She reminded all that we will quilt for Eleanora next month. She also asked for all to think about going to a quilt show in the future. One will be coming up in Midlothian soon. I think that would be fun. President Irene asked all for patience in her conducting the meeting. This was her first time, but she did a good job and so did all our other new officers. Irene thanked Ann for decorating for all the set up and clean up. She didn’t realize how much work it was. When setting up, I still always think of our dear Vlasta Laznovsky who used to have it all done when we got to Sokol Hall. Thank all of you for coming. This month of February is a busy month for Sokol. We had the Czech Music Festival on February 9 and saw many friends as I was in the museum - Milton and Madalene Jaresh. I can’t mention everyone, but it was good to see you all. Sokol had a good crowd, and the music was wonderful. Mollie B is coming February 22 to 24. The hall is being spruced up and is looking good. Then we have the 10K Giveaway on March 2, and later in March, Sokol has its annual exhibition. It is a busy, busy time. Everyone, stay well and warm. See you all March 14. Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth
This meeting on Thursday, February 14, 2013, was about the craziest one we’ve ever had. The right hand didn’t know what the left hand was doing, and the whole group was amazed at the confusion. Or, was it the moon full? That was it! Almost everyone was in red and in the spirit of the day. I really think the 40-plus attending had a fun time; I know I did and even this afternoon, the day brings a smile to my face. We began the meeting by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Our president thanked Theretta Praslicka for the beautiful floral arrangements that brightened each table. Her daughterin-law donated the flowers and made the arrangements for us. We are so blessed. Then, business happened, but was not as usual. The secretary left the minutes at home, but had the recent Vestnik article to refer back to. The only correction to her comments that I remember was that Lucy Esparza’s sister passed away; it was not her brother. Thank you letters from John Peter Smith Hospital, the Food Bank of Tarrant County, and Meals on Wheels for the donations sent last month were shared. The financial report was given, and we have money to continue on. Get well cards were sent to several of our members. Sonny Kercho and Robert Campbell had been hospitalized recently, but were feeling well enough to attend the meeting. Catherine Ann Davis who had back surgery in January was doing so well that she was also able to attend. It was reported that Linda Horner is back in the hospital, and her mother, Lucille Kret, is currently in rehab. We send our thoughts and prayers for continued healing for those mentioned, as well as those we do not know about. Last month, we voted on new officers. Evelyn Scaff agreed to fill the vice president’s position, and her nomination was accepted. This month however, Evelyn has so much going on with the lodge, etc. that she resigned, and Theretta Praslicka was appointed to take her place. Thanks to both ladies for their willingness to work with the lodge and the Ladies Circle. Both of these organizations are of such importance to the history of Czechs in Fort Worth. Next month, we will celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day by wearing green, and we will have a silent auction in con-

junction with the meeting. Each member is asked to bring one item to donate (if they wish). The items can be new or nice white elephants. We will have signup sheets available for each donation and go from there. We just thought it might add a little excitement to the next meeting. If it works, we’ll do it again sometime. Our birthday girls and boys were celebrated. They were Pauline Brownlee, Pauline Morbitzer, Shirley Martin, Mary Ann Kozel, Glenn Gibson, and Bobby Shropshire. Missing for the occasion were Madeliene Myers and Brenda Lackey. Comments from the group were great. Pauline B. is a charter member. Pauline M. is a retired nurse, and she shared an old picture of herself. She was also reminded by someone that her dad, who was a carpenter, built some of the tables and chairs for the lodge early on. Mary Ann Kozel met her husband Joe at the lodge on August 3, 1962. Willie Pickle was playing wonderful “stuff” to hear. Sherrie Watkins announced that Don Peachey from Wisconsin will be playing for the Saint Patrick’s Day dance on March 17. She is taking reservations for tables at this time. Just call the lodge, and she will be able to assist you. Once again, Ms. Gloria brought a basket to auction off. Theresa Clay was the big winner, and she stated that she was going to give it to her granddaughter Amber. We had 17 door prizes, and there may have been more. The table flowers were also given to those whose were sitting in lucky chairs. Then, we selected a Club Sweetheart. Evelyn Scaff was runnerup sweetheart and received a basket of goodies. Joy Booe, our sweetheart, received flowers and candy. Show-and-tell took place, and the prayer for lunch was given. We were starving, and our wonderful hostesses—Evelyn Scaff, Lucy Martinez, and Theretta Praslicka—had lunch ready. I know I have probably forgotten something important, but I hope not. Lent is a time for reflection and contemplation. Let’s always be thankful for what we have, and share the love of our Savior. Respectfully submitted, Joan Simek Shropshire Secretary —SPJST—

Dear Readers, On February 24, I went to San Antonio with my family. I love history, so this trip was extra special. I went to the Alamo and got to see William B. Travis’ “Victory or Death” letter. It was special because the letter was signed February 24, 1836, so I got to see it in person exactly 177 years later to the day. If you get a chance, go and see it. It was really a really neat Texas history experience. Dillon Narro —SPJST—

100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive There’s still time for youth club members to send in donations for this year’s 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. Thanks to all of the youth and youth clubs who have contributed to this wonderful project. All youth who donate at least $2 will receive two merit points. All youth who donate at least $5 will also receive a certificate. May 31 is the deadline to receive credit. May 4 is Join Hands Day Our goal for 2013 is to have 50 or
more lodges participate. What can your youth club do? Some of the great projects from past years included baking for the needy, cemetery clean-ups, highway beautification, assisting veterans and senior citizens programs, conducting a variety of fix-up and refurbishing projects, and a fundraiser for your local volunteer fire department. You’ve still got plenty of time to decide what you want to do in 2013. The main thing — at this point — is committing to do something. When coming up with ideas for your project try to do something that will be noticed by the public. If you have any questions on this, please contact me. Again, this year, the Home Office will offer a $100 incentive to local SPJST lodges to be used in developing and/or promoting their project. District Three Enjoys Youth Development Workshop
District Three attended our new State Youth Director’s workshop in Temple on February 23, 2013, at the SPJST Home Office. This was our great opportunity to meet Lynette Talasek and her wonderful ideas to help our youth clubs. The youth learned how to conduct a meeting with its proper procedures. The hands-on class session was a big hit with all the youth who attended. Lynette had a scrapbook demonstrator speak to the youth about their youth club scrapbooks. She also had a hands-on project for everyone to work on to give ideas to take back to the clubs.
17
The youth had a private session to discuss bullying that is going on and how to help stop bullying. District Three welcomes Lynette on her new journey in the SPJST Youth Department and cannot wait to get more involved with all of her fresh, new ideas. St. Patrick’s Day parades across the globe
Most celebrations are commemorated by a parade, and St. Patrick’s Day is no different. All around the world, millions of people will participate in Paddy’s Day fun, and thousands upon thousands will line up to watch any number of planned parades. The first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place on March 17, 1762, in New York City to honor the Catholic feast day of St. Patrick. At this time in history, there was an abundance of Irish settlers in American colonies, many of whom were indentured servants who brought their St. Patrick’s Day traditions to America. Although St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland, the first recorded St. Patrick’s Day parade was not held in Ireland. As more Irish immigrants continued to pour into America, the March 17 celebration became solidified and widespread. Today, the parade has become a staple of St.

Kilts and Irish culture
21
The image of a kilt-wearing gentleman has been deeply rooted in Scottish culture, so much so that the garment has been largely associated as an item hailing exclusively from Scotland. However, while the history of the kilt is a subject of debate among historians, the Irish have been known to don kilts as well. There are some people who claim that the kilt has been worn in Ireland as far back as the 16th century, but most historians agree that it is more of a recent phenomena that came as a result of Irish Nationalists adopting them at the beginning of the twentieth century as a symbol of Celtic identity.

At our February youth club meeting, the youth and adults made valentines for the residents at Will-O-Bell Nursing Home. We bought bags of M&M’s to go along with the valentines. On Saturday, February 9, 2013, Lodge 80, Holland

The kilt is a knee-length garment with pleats in the rear. It was the traditional dress of men and boys in the Scottish Highlands. However, the first kilt — the great kilt — is believed to be Norse in origin and not Celtic as first assumed. The plaids designated different families of Scottish heritage, and the kilts were made of twill and woven worsted wool. The Irish, known as Scotti, who migrated to the area of north Britain that would be named Scotland, never wore kilts before they arrived in this area. Rather, they wore trousers. Kilts were developed in the 16th century and then became common dress. Traditionally, nothing was worn under the Scottish kilt. Variants of the Scottish kilt began to be adopted in other Celtic nations and slowly became associated with the Gaelic language by the 20th century. The kilts worn by the Irish began as solid colors, rather than the intricate plaid tartans of the Scottish varieties. The most popular color was Saffron, which was worn by Irish military regiments. Black and green have also been used in Irish kilts. Some historians surmise the reason
people mistakenly assume the kilt in Ireland is older is because they have mistaken an older Irish garment, known as the Lein-croich, as a kilt. The Lein-croich actually was a long, linen tunic made from solid-colored cloth, but it was not a kilt. Today there are many variations of the Irish kilt, and some mirror the tartans of the Scottish varieties. These tartans are a fairly new development, having been first produced by a Scottish company that decided to produce them mostly for the Irish-American market. Irish tartans are virtually unknown in Ireland. Visitors to the Emerald Isle will rarely see a kilt being worn on the streets of Ireland. Still, thousands of Irish-Americans wear their Irish kilts with great pride to show off their heritage. Although Scottish kilts predate their Irish cousins by centuries, kilts have grown to be a form of formal wear widely accepted by Irish-Americans today. (MS) —SPJST—

What is corned beef?
At least once a year, people gather to enjoy a dish that is widely associated with Irish culture. Corned beef is a meat that is customarily served alongside potatoes and cabbage. Many people understand the “beef” part of the corned beef name, but do not understand the “corned” part. Corning refers to pickling meat in brine. Brines, which are composed of salt water, were often used to preserve meats when refrigeration was not available. According to the Department of Agriculture, the word “corn” comes from Anglo-Saxon times when meat was dry-cured in coarse “corns” of salt. Pellets of salt were rubbed into the meat to preserve it. Corned beef brines today contain more than just salt. They may have different spices and flavorings to add to the taste of the meat. (MS) —SPJST—

On Friday, February 22, 2013, which happened to be my birthday, my middle school one act play cast went to competition. We had worked very hard during the weeks of practice leading up to this, and we were prepared. The performance went off great. We felt like we had done our best and all that was left to do was wait for everyone else’s performance and the results. We just wanted to place, since the last time our middle school placed was seven years ago, and that was a third place. Finally, it was awards ceremony time. There were six “large” middle schools competing for three places and eight individual All Star Cast and eight Honorable Mention Actor awards. They began with the Honorable Mention awards, and I was stunned when they called my name. I could not believe I was selected in my very first competitive acting performance. Moments later, a second member of our cast was also recognized. Next, the All Star Cast awards were presented, which included two of our cast members. Finally, they announced the overall places and we won, what else - second place! What was the name of our play? The Miracle Group. What a great birthday! Fraternally, Amanda Hoggard —SPJST—

Lodge 229, Abilene Youth Club Ride SPJST Float in Christmas Parade
On February 9, 2013, I participated in an art contest known as VASE (Visual Arts Scholastic Event). VASE is a contest where high school students can enter forms of art from digital media to three dimensional sculptures. I entered in the mixed media category with an art piece that is a self-portrait I did with pencil and added to the image with pin and watercolor. In the image, I have a look on my face like I am pondering, and the paintbrush in my hand is a tool to put those thoughts onto paper. At the contest, judges interview the participants about the artwork asking the purpose of the piece, the different
techniques utilized, and steps employed to obtain the desired results. The judge that interviewed me seemed pretty impressed with my work, and it showed in my scores. I received 56 out of 60 points, which converts to a four on a scale of one to four, with four being the best. I received a medal, and my score entitled my work to be considered for advancing to state. I am also eligible to exhibit my work at Night Gallery, a districtwide high school showcase of art. TCGS sponsors Memoir I/Life Story Course; begins March 6 at SPJST Home Office
Think of the personal life and family stories of your parents and grandparents which were lost because they did not write down their stories. They thought no one would be interested, and now wouldn’t it be wonderful to go back and talk with them again? Don’t let this happen to your stories! Don’t let your stories be lost! Putting your past on paper is the best way to ensure that future generations know about your life and about your family’s life. Everyone’s life story is filled with all that life has to offer and each story is worth preserving. No writing skills are needed. This workshop teaches about preserving your life stories, and you will learn that writing skills, or lack of writing skills, actually add to your story. You will learn how to: 1) Get started and organize your work; 2) Prompt your memories; 3) Create your story collection. These things will be taught in six two-hour sessions from 1 to 3 p.m. each day on March 6 and 20; April 2 and 17; and May 1 and 15. The total cost is $75. Everyone who can come at 12 noon is asked to bring a brown bag lunch to enjoy as we become better acquainted. To register, call Charlene Hurta (979) 848-6517. —SPJST—

Brazos Valley CHS hosts valentine dance
The Brazos Valley Czech Heritage Society hosted a valentine dance on Sunday, February 17 from 3 to 6 p.m. at St. Joseph Parish Activity Center in Bryan. A disc jockey played polka, waltz, and two-step music for everyone’s dancing pleasure. The decorations and “snacks” were impressive. It must be a Czech thing to call a table full of good food and drink “snacks!”
Thank you to all who worked to put this event together. It was a fun, family atmosphere where young children can learn to dance polkas and waltzes. And, there were a lot of energetic children willing to dance. A good time was had by all. Clay and Barbara Seward —SPJST—
TCGS hosts “Digging for Gold”
“Digging for Gold in 2013” was the theme of the Texas Czech Genealogical Society’s Annual Meeting which was held on January 25 and 26, 2013, at the Caldwell Civic/Visitors’ Center in Caldwell, Texas. The weekend activities were kicked off on Friday evening at 5 p.m. with a wine and cheese reception honoring Reverend Jan Dus and his wife, Anna. This couple is from Policka, Czech Republic. Besides serving as pastor to a small congregation about 100 miles east of Prague, Reverend Dus is a licensed genealogical researcher. He enjoys helping travelers discover information about their ancestors from Moravia and also from the eastern, southern, and northern Bohemian area. He has a remarkable record of organizing trips and performing genealogical research for visitors from the United States. Reverend and Mrs. Dus lived in the United States for a number of years, so they understand English and speak it fluently. Following the very enjoyable reception, those in attendance partook of a delicious Czech dinner, catered by Slovacek’s. After the dinner hour, Reverend Dus gave his first presentation of the weekend. A most interesting talk, “Siller’s Pamatnik and What We Learn About the First Czech Protestants in the USA” kept the group focused and entertained. Attendees were anxious to come back on Friday for the next two presentations from this talented speaker. Saturday morning, promptly at 8 a.m., people from all over Texas began arriving to register and to enjoy a continental breakfast. Promptly at 9 a.m., opening ceremonies were held. TCGS President Charlene Hurta welcomed those in attendance to the meeting. Reverend John Gantt offered the prayer and led in the singing of the “Star Spangled Banner,” after which Caldwell Mayor Norris McManus addressed the group,
welcoming everyone to his city. During the brief business meeting, Bennie Stasny was elected secretary of TCGS, and Patsy Robertson was elected treasurer. Monica Havelka was thanked for her work as secretary the previous year, and Wayne Wendt was thanked for handling the job of treasurer for a number of years. Two awards were presented: The 2012 President’s Award was given to Monica Havelka. She has been handling many behind-the-scene functions along with her duty of TCGS photographer. She is also working on a project depicting Texas Czech Pioneers, which will be displayed soon in the Czech Veterans’ Museum in Temple. The 2012 Member of the Year Award was presented to Geraldine Lindeman, who lives in Caldwell and can be counted on to arrive early and stay late to help with set-up for every event that we have in Caldwell. No job is too large or too small for Geraldine and that makes her a very valuable member of TCGS. The first speaker of the day was Reverend Dus, whose topic was “Early History of Christians and Jews in the Czech Lands and Slovakia.” His presentation mentioned many interesting events that most Texas Czechs are unaware of, and his remarks made us appreciate the religious freedom that we enjoy today. Who among us has not wished that he or she could sit down and talk with parents, grandparents, or other deceased relatives about their lives? After the mid-morning break, Beverly Scott spoke about “Writing One’s Memoirs and How That Fits with Genealogy.” Beverly encouraged everyone to write stories about their lives, which future descendants can read to learn about us and the way we lived. Beverly will be conducting a Brown Bag Workshop in Temple at the SPJST Home Office, with six separate sessions to help those who would like help in writing their memoirs. The workshops will begin on March 6. The fee for the six sessions is $75 and should be sent to Charlene Hurta. An outstanding lunch was enjoyed by all in attendance. The meal was prepared by Texas Country Catering and consisted of stuffed pork loin and stuffed chicken breast, new potatoes, steamed vegetables, homemade hot rolls, tea, coffee, and apple dumplings! Following the meal, Liz Carmack offered a presentation about the types of information that are contained in non-governmental records and how we can efficiently access this information

and use it. Liz has researched and written two non-fiction books, which were available for sale: Historic Hotels of Texas: A Traveler’s Guide, written in 2007 and Rodeo Austin: Blue Ribbons, Buckin’ Broncs, and Big Dreams, published in 2012. She is currently a copywriter and editor for the Texas Association of Counties. Following the afternoon coffee break, Reverend Dus again took the stage to discuss his third and final topic: “Modern History of Christians and Jews in Czech Lands and Slovakia.” Charlene Hurta closed out the day’s presentations by giving a glimpse of all the projects and events that TCGS has on the calendar for 2013 and beyond, thanking TCGS members for all the work that they do to help the organization achieve its lofty goals. Door prize drawing winners and silent raffle winners were announced, after which everyone went home looking forward to the next event—the “Generation to Generation Research Conference” which will be held at the Caldwell Civic/Visitors’ Center on July 12 and 13, 2013. —SPJST—

Prague: My Long Journey Home Author Charles Ota Heller’s early childhood in Czechoslovakia was idyllic, but his safe and happy world didn’t last long, Three years after his birth, Germany forced an occupation of his country; afterward, most of his young life consisted of running and hiding. His life, just like those of the other youths who lived in Europe during the late 1930s and early 1940s, was shaped forever by the dangers, horrors, and unsettling events he experienced. In this memoir, Heller, born Ota Karel Heller, narrates his family’s story—a family nearly destroyed by the Nazis. Son of a mixed marriage, he was raised a Catholic and was unaware of his Jewish roots, even after his father escaped to join the British army and fifteen members of his family disappeared, tells of his Christian mother being sent to a slave labor camp and of his hiding on a farm to avoid deportation to a death camp. With the war coming to a close, Heller tells of how he picked up a revolver and shot a Nazi when he was just nine years old. Heller, now an assimilated American, left the horrors of the past, along with his birth name, behind to live the proverbial American Dream. In his memoir, he recalls how two cataclysmic events following Czechoslovakia’s Velvet Revolution brought him
face-to-face with demons of his former life. On his personal journey Heller discovered and embraced his heritage, one which he had abandoned decades earlier. Czech born American Author Charles Ota Heller and Bart Childs Ph.D. Professor Emeritus of Texas A&M University visit CCMH Brno Gallerie on Saturday, May 4, 2013, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Conversation with the author and book signing will provide an opportunity to discover and discuss his “A Memoir of Survival, Denial and Redemption,” his early idyllic growing up in Prague in a large Catholic and Jewish family, feeling the oppression and brutality of Nazi occupation of his beloved Czechoslovakia. World War II, and the ensuing subjugation to communism with eventual loss of 25 members of his Heller and Neumann family. It is the history of Czechoslovakia filling all the empty spaces we Americans never really knew or believed. It is a spell binding read for which we are grateful to have in the English language. You may order the book “Prague: My Long Journey Home” early for your signing on May 4 as Prague International Gifts will have them available the week of March 1. Please call (713) 528-2060. The CCMH invites the general public, schools, and certainly the Holocaust Museum Houston, all Czech Heritage Societies, KJT Societies and SPJST lodges for this special occasion, CCMH is honored to host.
