40 Pages of Fraternalism

This week’s 40-page Vestnik filled up quickly. Czech out all of the

activities that our lodges and youth clubs are involved in around the state. Plus, many items are already waiting for next week’s Vestnik. Thanks to each and every contributor for sharing photos and articles. We greatly appreciate you. And, stay tuned for next week’s Vestnik which will include scenes from:

• District Five Spring Meeting • Lodge 32, Victoria Polka Fest • Lodge 48, Beyersville Turkey Shoot • TCGS Fundraiser • Czech Class held in West

TCGS Hosts Successful Fundraiser Hats off to Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) for a very well-organized, fun, and successful fundraiser held Saturday, April 6 at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall. The meal was delicious, the company was fantastic, the music was great, and the cause was very worthy! TCGS volunteers organized the event to raise funds for the Czech Veterans’ Wall of Honor and Military Museum, located inside the SPJST Home Office. Thank you, TCGS, for a wonderful event. See an article and photos in next week’s Vestnik.

Nonat Salve Returns We recently received a call from Alfred Novacek, formerly of Nebraska and now of Oregon, about a salve used for medicinal purposes called Nonat. Nonat was brought to this country by Marie Leiblinger in 1899 which was given to her by a doctor from the old country (Czechoslovakia). She settled in Cleveland and later in California. Nonat came in a hard tube and to activate it, you

had to put a flame to it and spread it on the affected area. It was good for infections and splinter removal. It became very popular among Czech communities. The name of Nonat was a jumble of the name “Anton” as Marie had a devotion to St. Anthony. After an absence of 60 years, it is now back on the market in a soft form in a 3/4-ounce tin. Alfred Novacek gave it to Flanders Pharmacy who came up with the formula in a soft form. To order, or for more information, see the ad on page 37 of this week’s Vestnik; visit www.nonatsalve.com; or call (503) 234-5594.

SPJST Model Lodge Program: Best Practice No. 5 - Part 1

VӖSTNÍK

Lodge hosts a variety of events and partners with other groups in the community.

To maintain its relevancy and leadership position within the community, lodge hosts interesting meetings as well as a diverse calendar of events that appeal to a range (age, gender, etc.) of members and prospective members. There’s no shortage of good ideas to enliven your meetings. Consider guest speakers — limiting their presentation time to 10 minutes or so — addressing a range of topics ranging from financial planning, sports, local school and youth issues, senior topics community services, current events and entertainment. Potluck dinners and seasonal programs can be both enlightening and fun! Partnering with other lodges or organizations in your area offers fellowship and networking opportunities and helps to diversify the lodge's programming. This could be in conjunction with Join Hands Day in May or at any other time during the year. Seasonal events, including Christmas and other holiday gatherings may provide the opportunity for lodges to work and even celebrate together. In addition to partnering with other organizations, local businesses can sometimes make great partners when it comes to fundraising or supporting a charitable cause. Consider approaching local restaurants, service providers, and retail shops to see if they have an interest in a fundraising partnership. What about your lodge? What collaborative ventures have you experienced with other groups or businesses in your community? Were they successful? Why or why not? Some lodge events happen only once, such as a fund raiser or special anniversary of your

A successful partnership allows you to recognize your own weaknesses and draw on a partner's strengths. Recently, the Atlantic Monthly published a Harvard University study, for which 250 men had been interviewed every five years since the 1940s, to determine what really makes someone happy. To summarize the results, there was just one overriding cause of happiness: sustained partnerships over a long period of time.

lodge or youth program. Other events take place on a regular basis — like monthly lodge meetings. Identify some of the major events that your lodge has hosted in recent years. Did the events achieve their objectives? What could have been done to make them even better? Lodge revitalization takes place over time and through a series of projects and activities. Seldom, if ever, is there “just one thing” that will address all of the challenges facing a dor-

mant or relatively inactive lodge. It takes local leadership and vision to pull together the lodge and make good things happen. It’s important for lodge officers to understand that revitalizing a lodge program can be a slow and deliberate process, not one big project, and develop a variety of projects and activities that will lead to long term improvement of the lodge program. Patience and persistence pays off in the end. —SPJST—

Lodge 15 Buckholts reports on April meeting

The meeting of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts was called to order at 5 p.m. by President Doug Williams. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Martha Glaser followed by a moment of silence in memory of our departed members. All officers were present except Vice President A.W. Zajicek who was not feeling well. President Williams welcomed everyone and thanked all for coming. We were expecially happy to have as our guest Carla Mitchell from Rogers. She and Lamerle Zajicek are to do the decorative painting when the weather settles down. The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were read and approved. We had a very good report on rentals this past month, but expenses were high as well. Our rental program is currently under review as the prices of everything have gone up the past few years. We have not had an increase in rentals or bar sales to offset these higher prices. I need to make a correction on last month’s minutes. The paint that is to be used on the decorative painting is not fade-proof. It is a special outside paint and has a much slower process fading than regular paint. In new business, it is time to renew the contract with the school and the county tax office on the lodge’s taxexemption. Our SPJST building serves this area for many different occasions such as fundraisers for the local fire department, school events such as the junior and senior prom, for medical fundraisers, for funerals, reunions, weddings, and to boost our morale - a dance now and then. It is such a big help on our finances to be tax-exempt. We are currently having a problem with vehicles taking a short cut across the lodge property instead of using the designated streets. A barrier was put up by the Precinct One Commissioner, but that hasn’t stopped the vehicles so other measures will be taken. Several of our members were congratulated on recent events. Douglas and Virginia Williams just celebrated their 60th anniversary. Martha Glaser

will be celebrating her 88th birthday on April 11, and Kathleen Jurca will be 96 on April 18! Congratulations and happy birthday! Virginia Williams made the motion that we adjourn, seconded by Lamerle Zajicek. Motion carried. Door prizes were drawn and handed out, and a delicious meal was served. Next Meeting—May 13 The next meeting will be May 13. We hope that you can be there. Fraternally, Dorothy Tomascik, Secretary —SPJST—

Lodge 24, Cyclone sets Mother’s Day Barbecue

SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone met on April 8, 2013, in the land of the thistles that indicates a good cotton year. Most cotton farmers are waiting to plant the

expensive seeds after the cold weather of 40 degrees, as cotton is not for such low temperatures. The meeting was called to order by President Daniel Wilde at 7:10 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was said, and a moment of silent prayer was observed for the departed and sick was held. Secretary Margaret Mikeska was absent for a church convention. Bar Chairman Mark Maddux gave the bar report. Shirley Hoelscher gave the fraternal activities coordinator’s report: Model Lodge, 100 Pennies, Bloomin’ Temple Car Show that will include Miss Texas and beseda dancers, Join Hands Day in May, State Horseshoe Tournament on May 18, and End of Summer Getaway August 9 to 11 in Corpus Christi. Mother’s Day Barbecue Lunch will be held Sunday, May 12. Plates will be a low price of $8 each. Cooks chose to start at 3 a.m. again. A total of 120 pounds of cabbage will be ordered and processed into slaw on Tuesday before the dinner. One thousand chicken halves will be prepared for the event.

Sauce will be made by Barbara Macek - about 10 gallons. We are hoping for a good day and expect a large turnout. The price cannot be beat. Youth and members are asked to bring two desserts - cake, pie, or mixed fruit. Pit cleaning will be May 1 to 3. Hall managers have a busy time in the next month with rentals galore. We are having benefits, birthday parties, sports banquet, and weddings. The Czechaholics are booked for Sunday, August 4 from 2 to 6 p.m. We are looking forward to the polka dancers with us then. Efforts are being made to get another band. The lodge voted to donate $50 to Dorothy Vitek of Rocking Grandmas for the American Cancer Society; $50 to East Bell County Youth Boosters; and $100 to Heather Fry’s family for her eye accident while competing in a golf tournament. The youth club had a meeting on April 7 with 12 members present, one guest, and 10 adults. The next youth club meeting will be at the new bowling lanes. In March 2013, some members of Sokol and SPJST decided to honor an important member of both organizations. Lydia Alholm was chosen to be “Queen for a Day” as an honor for all she has contributed to Sokol and SPJST. She was treated to lunch and presented a bouquet of red roses in appreciation of her loving and giving spirit. For many years, Lydia and her husband Roy (now deceased) along with Lydia’s parents opened their home and farm to Sokol members for an Easter picnic that lasted all day. It was a great family event. It remains a wonderful memory for many young people as well as the older brothers and sisters. Roy and Lydia attended Sokol events especially District Slets and National Slets. They also performed in Europe in the Paris Slet and Czech Slet.

Roy was a member of SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth, and Lydia continues her membership at Lodge 92. Roy was active in fire insurance. They were always available to help or contribute their home in any way. R.L. Alholm, their son, was a great help in the club room, with putting up tables or assisting in any way. Roy and R.L. have passed away, but everyone has good memories of their active lives in Sokol and SPJST. There were many who attended the surprise celebration for Lydia at Oscar’s Restaurant in North Richland Hills. It was a wonderful day of thanksgiving for the Alholm and Tirk families. Lydia’s parents Mr. and Mrs. Tirk were charter members of Sokol Fort Worth in 1912. Gay Williams —SPJST—

Lodge 191, Lufkin sets April 19 dance

Thanks to Glenn Lenderman and Friends for a great time at our March dance. Lots of folks turned out for a good time. Our theme was Easter, and it is hard to believe Easter will be over by the time you get this newsletter for April. Thanks to all of you who brought food for our food table. We enjoy good food! We want to say a big thank you to Ruth Welch, Coleman and Linda Standley, Jesse Steele, and Linda Hammers for hosting our March dance.

the March meeting, left to right, are District two Director Jesse Pospisil, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Horak, and Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek.

They did a wonderful job. We had plastic Easter eggs taped to the bottom of four chairs with money in them, but we did not tell anyone until half time. Then, everyone had to look on the bottom of their chair. I did not get the names of all the winners, but congratulations to all of you!

Next Meeting—April 18 Our next lodge meeting is April 18 at 7 p.m. at SPJST Lodge 191, located at 197 Hughes Road in Lufkin. We need more of the members to attend these meetings. If you have any new ideas or want to see some changes, this is the time and place to put your two cents worth in. The meetings are the only way to get things done.

Next Dance—April 19 Come on out, kick up your heels, and dance to the tunes of Buffalo Nickel who will be playing at our next dance on Friday, April 19. Our dances are always the third Friday night of each month from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. The cost is $5 for members and $6 for non-members. Please bring finger food for the food table. We need at least four people to be hosts for the April dance. If you would like to do this, please email me at GeorgePat@consolidated.net or call me (936) 875-2867. Thanks so much. We had our first dance lesson on April 2 and had a very good turnout of student dancers. Also, we had a good number of members of SPJST and Lufkin Dance Club helping our students. Bernard and Catherine Hylands are the excellent teachers who will be teaching all but April 16, and Diane Hobbs and John Lilly will be teaching that night. The waltz and polka were the first two dances on the agenda, and

the students seemed to do very well. Our dance lessons are the first four Tuesday nights in April. Registration begins at 6 p.m., and the lessons are from 7 to 9 p.m. Come, bring a friend, and have a good time learning how to dance. The cost is $6 per night, or $20 for the four nights. If you attend all four lessons, you will get a free pass to the next dance. The Tuesday night dates in April are 2, 9, 16, and 23. I do not yet know what line dances they will be teaching, but I know you are going to like them. There will be a dance on May 11 from 6 to 11 p.m. benefiting the Texas Forestry Museum. It is called Jump Jive and Wail, a 1940s Hanger Dance, USO Style, at the hanger in Tyler. The cost is $30 in advance and $35 at the door. If anyone has any news, illness, or anything you think might be of interest to our readers, please email me at GeorgePat@consolidated.net. Until next time, Pat Scogin, Reporter —SPJST—

Words You Don’t Hear Anymore

Editor’s Note: Thanks to Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center President Jerry Milan, who also serves as president of Lodge 154, Fort Worth, for sharing this. Jerry says he remembers hearing these words in Czech most of the time.

Be sure to refill the ice trays, we’re going to have company. Why can’t you remember to roll up your britches’ legs? Getting them caught in the bicycle chain so many times is tearing them up.

Be sure and pull the windows down when you leave, it looks like a shower is coming up.

Don’t forget to wind the clock before you go to bed.

Wash your feet before you go to bed, you’ve been playing outside all day barefooted.

You have torn the knees out of that pair of pants so many times there is nothing left to put a patch on. Don’t you go outside with your school clothes on!

Go comb your hair, it looks like the rats have nested in it all night. Put a dish towel over the cake so the flies won’t get on it.

Lodge 196, Houston-West Hosts Successful Easter Egg Hunt

Lodge 196, Houston-West held its Easter egg hunt on Saturday, March 23, 2013. Almost 40 children showed up, and everyone enjoyed the festivities. The local fire department brought its truck for the children to climb on and enjoy. Everyone got a free picture with the Easter Bunny, and Everet Bear

helped with the hunt. Money from additional pictures benefited the Joe Joe Bear Foundation, which gives teddy bears to children with life threatening illnesses. It is hoped the event brought enough attention to start a youth program at the lodge. State Youth Director Lynette Talasek was on hand to help.

For the first year, it was definitely a success. Many thanks to all who volunteered to make this a great day. Fraternally Yours Delisle L. Doherty, Vice President —SPJST—

Open the back door and see if we can get a breeze through here; it is getting hot. You can walk to the store; it won’t hurt you to get some exercise.

Sit closer to the radio, don’t turn it up so loud.

If you pull that stunt again, I am going to wear you out! Don’t lose that button; I won’t be able to sew it back on.

Honest Day’s Work

By d.knape Lodge 187, Round Rock

The old farmer plowed his field rocks were what he mostly tilled, his work was hard, going uphill the rocks as stubborn as his will Every stone was buried deep as if the field had meant to keep, still he labored, working each until the stones at last released

For every rock that he would find was like a weight upon his mind, and as he removed each heavy stone his worries left him, one by one Finally when all light had gone he sat down, reflected on the fact he'd never took a rest yet felt himself uniquely blessed

He paused to look where he had been the rocks were gone, the rows were clean and where there once were weeds and thorns an inner sense of pride was born In the end his work was worth every drop of sweat, or rock he cursed for as he paused, looked where he’d been he’d gladly do it all again

Though bone weary, deep inside he felt accomplishment and pride knew every pain was plainly worth the joy of doing honest work. —SPJST—

2012 - 2013 Youth Club Member Update - Merit Points and Meeting Attendance

Second Quarter Merit Points and Meeting Attendance The totals below in the column labeled “Pts” are merit points earned in the first, second, and third quarters (June 2012 to February 2013). This is total merit points for the 2012-2013 youth year. Please see “What is the Merit Point System?” for complete information about the contest. The number in the column labeled “Mtgs” is the number of meetings each youth club member has attended during the June to February 2013 youth year. Please see “What is an Active Youth Member?” below to determine number of meetings needed to participate in youth activities.

What is the Merit Point System? Youth club members earn merit points for participating in SPJST lodge, district and state activities. At the end of the youth year, points are totaled and the youth with the highest points in the youth club receive cash awards.

Contest Dates June 1, 2012 to May 31, 2013

Merit Point Contest Age Divisions Junior—Entering Kindergarten to Age 12 Teen—Age 13 to High School Senior

Rules The youth leader or assistant youth leader is responsible for keeping track of the merit points for each active member of the youth club. The points are to be sent to the State Youth Director on the Quarterly and Merit Point Reports each quarter. Youth club members are also encouraged to keep up with their points and turn them in to the youth leader on a quarterly basis. This system helps both the youth leader and the youth member keep better records of youth participation. Current, official Quarterly and Merit Point Reports, available from the State Youth Director may only be used in the Merit Point Contest. The Quarterly and Merit Point Reports sent to the State Youth Director by the youth leader will be kept on file for at least six months following the conclusion of the contest. Merit points are earned for only those activities listed under Youth Point Values. An activity can only earn points in one category on the point sheet. When in doubt about any activity earning points, contact the State Youth Director prior to the contest conclusion. Everyone will be subject to the same rules in every contest. Failure to comply with any rule shall mean immediate withdrawal.

Merit Point Awards First through fifth place awards are presented in the junior and teen divisions of each youth club. The amount of points that top winners receive in both divisions will determine where the point rankings of the first through fifth winning categories begin. First place winners will be those equal to and 20 points below the top place winner in their age division. Second Place will be 21 to 40 points below the top winner in their age division. Third place will be 41 to 60 points below the top winner in their age division. Fourth place will be 61 to 80 points below the top winner in their age division. Fifth place will be 81 to 100 points below the top winner in their age division. Awards are presented on the lodge, district, and state levels in the junior and teen merit point contests. At each District YAD, the Home Office presents first through fifth place awards to qualifying junior and teen youth club members. The junior and teen with the most points in each district also receive recognition. In the event of a tie, all who tied for first place will receive the award.* Junior and Teen Point Awards First Place $30 Second Place - $25 Third Place - $20 Fourth Place - $15 Fifth Place $10

What is an Active Youth Member? A youngster with a current SPJST insurance certificate may enter the youth program the youth year that he/she will be entering kindergarten. To be considered active, youth club member must attend a majority (seven) of the monthly meetings during the year. The youth must attend the majority of these meetings at his/her home youth club. In those instances where a lodge does not have a youth club, the youngster may attend adult lodge meetings or the meetings of another youth club. The youngster will be eligible for camp and Youth Achievement Day (YAD) after the completion of his/her kindergarten year. Active youth members must be single and not be pregnant or a parent. The age of the youth on June 1 of the current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.). The youth year begins June 1 and ends May 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school.

Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth: Spring Break 2013

Dear Readers, Spring break this year was lots of fun! I got to spend the first two days with my Paw Paw and Maw Maw (Jerry and Lillian Beasley of Lodge 17, New Tabor) and my cousins Jaiden Beasley and Sierra Beasley.

Lodge 1 Fayetteville Youth Club to host MLBTM Pitch, Hit & RunTM

SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville Youth Club will host a free Major League Baseball® Pitch, Hit & RunTM Competition for area youth on Sunday, April 27, 2013, at 12 noon at SPJST Youth Ballpark in Fayetteville, Texas. Pitch, Hit & PitchTM is the official skills competition of Major League Baseball®. This grassroots program is designed to provide youngsters with an opportunity to compete, free of charge, in a competition that recognizes individual excellence in core baseball/softball skills. Boys and girls are divided into four age divisions: 7/8, 9/10, 11/12, 13/14, and have the chance to advance through four levels of competition, including Team Championships at Major League ballparks and the National Finals at the 2013 MLBTM AllStar Game®. The individual Pitching, Hitting, and Running Champions along with the All-Around Champion in each age and gender group at the local competition will be awarded an advance to the Sectional Level of Competition. For questions concerning the competition, please contact your local coordinators Clint

Paw Paw and Maw Maw took us to the George Bush Library in College Station, Texas, and Washington on the Brazos in Washington, Texas. I really enjoyed seeing the huge airplanes hanging from the ceiling at the George Bush Library and even got a replica

from the gift shop. At Washington on the Brazos, I learned lots of cool things about the history of Texas. I also got to go to a Texas A&M University softball game with my Maw Maw. It was cold, but we had a lot of fun and I even caught a tee-shirt!

Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club reports on activities

Dear Readers, Our youth attended a special outing on Sunday, April 7, 2013, at Whatz-up Family Fun Park in Seven Points. More than 20 members and guests joined in on the fun. First, we held our monthly meeting in the party room at the event center. Everyone worked their Vestnik puzzles, and we discussed topics from the youth leaders’ retreat and also upcoming events with a focus on Youth Achievement Day (YAD). Betty distributed packets to each member that consisted of YAD cards and the new 2013-2014 SPJST Youth Program Handbook. The District Three Spring Meeting will be held Sunday, April 28, and everyone is getting “egg-cited” about the egg decorating contest. I heard a rumor that both Reagan and Dustin have some special royal designs in mind for their eggs. I can’t wait to see what these two come up with! After the meeting, everyone enjoyed an afternoon of laser tag, bumper cars, go-cart riding, miniature golf, video arcade, pizza, and drinks. A big thanks to Betty for organizing the event.

Thank you to my Paw Paw and Maw Maw for taking me and my cousins to all these neat places. I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us next year! Weston Beasley —SPJST—

Lodge 88, Houston Youth Gains Skills at Cooper Farm

Dear Members, Our district had a retreat at SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) at Cooper Farm in February. We learned many different things and from the retired FBI and police officers who gave the presentation. They gave us different scenarios of what to do if a stranger happens to get into our school, asked us what our schools were doing to keep us safe, and also what kind of drills they do with us. Then, we discussed bullying and the importance to make it stop with us and not pass it on. Last, they talked to us about drugs and how drugs affect

us daily and in our schools. We had the opportunity to watch LouLou and Zeus at work. They planted a pouch. Then, they brought the dogs in, and they went to work. It was really amazing. After lunch, activities included canoeing, high ropes course, a hay ride, and later, dinner. We spent the night, and all had a good time. I hope that maybe we can do it again in the fall. Lodge 154, Fort Worth Hosts Annual Easter Picnic

What a great day for an Easter picnic! Lodge 154, Fort Worth and Sokol Fort Worth celebrated Easter with its annual Easter Picnic on Sunday, March 31, 2013. The beautiful weather brought a big group out for food, friends, family, and festivities. A potluck lunch was enjoyed by all after a warm blessing was said by Paul Milan. After lunch, there were three different age group children’s egg hunts held, then the women’s and men’s hunts. By tradition, the women and men hunt for adult beverages, special prizes, and this year—a gold prize egg. Once all the prize egg winners had received their cash prizes, we started the ‘raw egg toss.’ You’d be amazed to see how far a raw egg can actually roll across a rough partially grassy area! Some of our contestants had

great throwing arms; some had soft hands to cradle the catches; a few used special techniques passed down from generation to generation. Then there were those that must have had a rubber egg because that thing would just hit the ground and roll and roll! The men’s winner threw (and caught) the egg 120 feet to win! We finished the afternoon with a great game of softball with several generations playing together. Thankfully no one got hurt, although I’m sure there were some Tylenol bottles opened the next morning. West Czech language class completed

SPJST Lodge 180, Burleson members Joe and Alice Janecka completed another Czech language class in West, Texas, on April 1, 2013. This was their 14th class in the north Texas area, which includes West, Fort Worth, Dallas, and Ennis. Joe and Alice are always amazed at the enthusiasm and interest the students have in the Czech language, history and culture, even though many are second or third generation Czechs. It seems to be a characteristic of Texas Czechs to be proud of their heritage. Some students traveled from as far as Mansfield, Temple, and Killeen to attend this session in West. The 12-week course consisted of pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary language instruction along with presentations on Czech history, traditions, and culture. Joe tries to cram 12 years of language instruction into 12 two-hour sessions. A lot of material is presented in class, but it is also added to a progressive CD-ROM, which the students take home to study at their

leisure. Joe was fortunate to have Mr. Jan Vaculik, former editor and publisher of Hospodař, a Czech language newspaper, assist him with the intricacies of the Czech language. A technique Joe uses that helps the learning is the adding of one or two Czech songs per week along with their translation. Students acquire reading and pronunciation skills by singing the songs in class. This term, we were fortunate to have Mr. Alvin Moravec with his accordion, along with lead singer Karen Osbourne leading our singing. Most students really enjoy the singing session, rather than having in-class individual readings. The final class always culminates in a party. Everyone brings in “finger foods” that are always delicious and we end our session with the singing of the Czech national anthem, “Kde Domuv Muj” played on the piano by Pat Blackshear. Joe and Alice wish to thank the City of West along with City Secretary Mr. Joey Pustejovsky for the use of the West Community Center for these Czech classes. Any future classes will be announced here in the Vestnik and on Joe’s website at www.goodolejoe.org. Joe and Alice Janecka live near Burleson, Texas. TCGS Spring Steppin’ fundraiser allows purchase of bronze cross

A card was recently purchased which read, “Generosity has a grace all its own.” With a little word changing, the inside would read, “Your hearts were very giving, and ours are very grateful.” On Saturday, April 6, 2013, the Texas Czech Genealogical Society held its first-ever fundraiser—Spring Steppin’—at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall. Wow! We would have never been able to achieve the success we had without the help and donations from so many! Our goal was to raise funds towards the purchase of two particular items for the Czech Veterans’ Museum and Wall of Honor: a World War II Military Jeep for the entrance at the Wall of Honor, and a Bronze Battlefield Cross display for the entrance to the Ultimate Sacrifice Alcove. Supporters, through purchasing tickets to the event, donations, and individual bids in both the silent and live auctions, have allowed us to order the Bronze Battlefield Cross. With additional donations arriving daily, we are in hopes of soon being able to announce that we have obtained a World War II Military Jeep. We could not have achieved this without the help of so, so many. Throughout the evening, we received comments about the delicious meal prepared by TCGS Lifetime member, Slovacek’s. “It is so great to have good-old Czech music by a Czech band,” were common remarks concerning the Jerry Haisler and the Melody Five. Better evidence were the many couples who kept their feet moving around the dance floor, while others watched and tapped their toes. Add the unbelievable raffle baskets, the pistol raffle, the auction items, outstanding door prizes, a houseful of enjoyable folks to have conversation with, and the results made for a wonderful Saturday Spring Steppin’ event, bringing folks from all around asking, “When are y’all doing this again? This has been so much fun!” Door prize winners were Nell Stanton of Ovilla, Texas—Pirates Point Resort Relaxing Package at Little Cayman Island; Buddy Carlson of Caldwell, Texas— Bluebonnet Acrylic Painting by Joyce Matous Wall; Dolores Skrabanek of Temple, Texas—$150 Academy gift card; Louis Kohutek of Temple, Texas—Boy’s 20-inch Bicycle; and

Robert Doty of Waco, Texas—Westphalia Meat Market $100 gift card. TCGS realizes the success of this fundraiser is because of the support of so many, including the officers/members of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall who went over and above the line of duty helping us in our endeavor. President Edwin Pechal, Vice President/Hall Manager Frank Klinkovsky, and Assistant Hall Manager LaVerne Vanicek, we send you our deepest appreciation and gratitude. Not only those listed above, but others from the lodge went out of their way to be helpful in numerous ways, doing their best to insure the event’s success. In addition, we owe much gratitude to the SPJST Home Office for its support, as well as a special thanks to District Two Director Jesse Pospisil and wife Linda who took time from their busy schedule to come to the event, donate to the live auction, and participate in the auctions and raffle. Last, but by no means least, we give thanks to our own TCGS membership! As always, you are the best of the best. Our society is known for its giving. You, our members, proved it true once again. You gave, you supported, and you attended. You are awesome! To Everyone Reading This Article: Watch for our announcement of the arrival of the Bronze Battlefield Cross Statue and make plans to visit us in the SPJST Home Office in Temple. And, oh, yes, to answer the question as to when we will do it again? Mark your calendar - November 9, 2013, in Caldwell. Keep watching for updates! With much thanks, gratefulness, and appreciation, Texas Czech Genealogical Society Charlene Hurta, President Editor’s Note: Watch for photos from the event in next week’s Vestnik. —SPJST—

Charlie weaves many threads together to create an intriguing book that is hard to put down. One thread is the history of the Czech people from different origins, different faiths, and dominated by outside governments. Another thread is of his families that were entrepreneurs and community leaders. Still another thread is that of a youngster whose father goes far away to join the British Army to fight the occupiers of his homeland. This includes arbitrary loss of family at the hands of the occupiers, his mother being horribly oppressed, and his growth despite the circumstances. The family became American and achieved success through hard work in the manner of the classic American melting pot. Charlie was invited by the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences to visit his homeland in 1970. The reason for the invitation was his work in a revolutionary application of computers, computer-aided design. His parents were reluctant about his accepting the invitation because they were listed as enemies of the state. Sue, his wife, was

excited and insisted that she and their young son accompany him. This rewarding experience was not without tense moments, and Charlie describes them with drama and humor. Charlie has made many trips to the Czech Republic since the Velvet Revolution. He has given workshops and seminars to managers of newly-privatized companies on entrepreneurship and doing business in a market economy. This has also enabled him to reconnect with family and childhood friends. He has served the Czech culture in the United States through the board of the SVU (Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences) and many other ways. The books will be available for purchase at a bookstore or gift shop associated with each of the sites or at a bookstore designated by the site. —SPJST—
