for all affected by the West, Texas fertilizer plant explosion and the brave first responders and volunteers.
SPJST expresses its grief and profound sense of loss in the wake of the April 17, 2013, explosion in West, Texas. The Society shares a deep personal and cultural attachment to the City of West and its legions of SPJST members, families, and friends. A loss of this magnitude bares our collective souls and brings us together as a community and a nation. SPJST extends its appreciation and thanks to the first responders and volunteers who worked to minimize the loss of life and damage to property and bring a measure of comfort to those who have lost so much. We will continue to stay in touch with our members in and around West, monitoring the events as they unfold and providing assistance and support where it is most needed.

SPJST Model Lodge Program: Fundraising Ideas for SPJST Lodges
Premium refunds and incentives awarded by the Supreme Lodge can be substantial; however, they typically represent only a portion of what an active lodge needs to function effectively. Private rentals, public dances and bingo are fundraising mainstays for many SPJST lodges — and in particular — for those lodges with buildings and property to maintain. Even so, having a building isn’t a necessary prerequisite to host a fundraising event. The following listing of 10 fundraising ideas represents a compilation of past lodge initiatives as well as efforts made by other fraternal and civic organizations. While it is not intended to be an “all-inclusive” listing, it does provide you with a place to start when considering an approach to your next fundraising event.
1. Raffle One of the simplest of all fundraisers is the raffle. The Texas Charitable Raffle Enabling Act permits “qualified organizations” to hold up to two raffles per calendar year, with certain specified restrictions.
By definition, SPJST lodges fit the definition of a “qualified organization.” For the complete definition, please refer online to: https://www.oag.state.tx.us/consumer/raffle.sh tml The State of Texas defines a raffle as the award of one or more prizes by chance at a single occasion among a single pool or group of persons who have paid or promised a thing of value for a ticket that represents a chance to win a prize. A qualified organization may offer any prize except money. “Money” is defined as coins, paper currency, or a negotiable instrument that represents and is readily convertible to coins or paper currency. If the raffle organizers offer a prize which they have purchased or have given other consideration for, the value of the prize may not exceed $50,000, or $250,000 if the purchased prize is a residential dwelling. There is no value limit on prizes donated to the organization. Texas lottery tickets may be purchased and offered as prizes, even though the tickets’ payoff may exceed $50,000.
The organization must have each raffle prize in its possession or ownership or must post a bond for the full amount of the value of the prize with the county clerk of the county where the raffle will be held. Proceeds from ticket sales must be used only for the charitable purposes of the qualified organization. For more complete information on this topic, please refer online to: https://www.oag.state.tx.us/consumer/ra ffle.shtml 2. Bake Sale This is an easy fundraiser to run as part of a larger community event, such as a holiday craft sale, sporting event or even as a stand alone activity in cooperation with a local business.
In preparation, you will want to invite all of the bakers in your lodge to have them make their specialty. As an added attraction, suggest that they send a list of ingredients and recipe with their baked goods. Make sure to have an assortment of different types of desserts ranging from kolaches, strudels and cookies to muffins, cakes and pies. Some lodges and youth clubs have found it best to leave the pricing “open,” and allow the purchaser to pay whatever they believe to be fair. More often than not, this approach seems to result in a nice donation added to the “fair” price. 3. Auction or Consignment Sale Silent auctions as well as live auctions have long been a staple fundraising activity for many SPJST lodges. Auctions and consignment sales provide a great service for the community and have the potential to raise significant proceeds for the lodge. Consignment sales work much like consignment stores. Sellers tag their own merchandise and take it to a central location to be sold. In exchange for hosting and handling the
VӖSTNÍK
merchandise, the lodge takes a cut, varying from 20 to 30 percent of the profits from each sale. This can add up when a big consignment sale is hosted and lots of merchandise change hands. Typically, you will need a fairly large area to hold the sale such as a lodge hall, community center or easily accessible lot. The key is in securing a good location. Make the sale open to everyone. Sellers bring items from home they’d like to sell – or give away – everything from household appliances and furniture to farm equipment, antiques, and collectibles. Assign each seller a number to track sales. You’ll need to provide tables for sellers to display their sale items. Charge a small entry fee and offer concessions. Shopping makes people hungry! Decide beforehand how much of a percentage sellers will keep from what they sell. The rest is profit for your lodge. As soon as the location and date for the sale are decided, start getting the word out. Use email, printed fliers, Facebook, radio, and TV to promote your sale. Post fliers in locations where people with kids typically go – schools, churches, restaurants, grocery stores and other social and retail establishments. 4. Garage Sale Garage sales can serve as an excellent source of revenue for the lodge or youth club.
You can sell furniture, jewelry, clothing items, and practically anything else of value. Proper advertisement of this event will increase the number of visitors resulting in higher prices for the most sought after items. —SPJST—

Districts Five, Six Sales Agents Participate in Training
Twenty-six agents took part in a special training to roll out a new program to service members with certificates whose agents are no longer around. The agents learned how to properly review a member’s certificate, along with the paperwork to ensure everyone’s needs are addressed. We are asking each member who receives a phone call from an agent to welcome the agent into their home. If
you are a member of Districts Five or Six and know you have changes needed to your certificate, or have had an event in your life that would show a need for more insurance, please contact Delisle Doherty (832) 232-2049 or (254) 239-2841. Ennis Sewing Circle
Ennis Sewing Circle met on April 11, 2013. Ann Clagett, Dorothy Prachyl, Irene Prachyl, Pat Fowler, Eleanora Pelzel, and I came early. We stretched Pat Fowler’s quilt in the club room as someone had decorations in the dining room, decorating for a wedding. That was nice as the table and chairs were all set up. Quilters came early; ladies were all around the quilt. Pat had a pretty navy and red quilt top. By lunchtime, we had 21 members and three guests - Maggie Holy, Mildred Petter, and Joe Ehrenberger. We are happy to say Maggie joined our
Circle. She is a quilter - we are so glad to have you. After lunch, President Irene called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all. Ginny Svehlak read the minutes for Secretary Dolores as she was substitute teaching. Treasurer Dorothy Bobalek gave her report. Both were approved as read. President Irene had a brochure and talked about the quilt show, “A World of Color” on July 19 and 20 at the Conference Center in Midlothian. Hopefully, we will all plan to attend. Irene also had a copy typed up for approval by a committee - Dorothy J. Kudrna, Dorothy Bobalek, Lil Kosarek, and Libbie Vrla - of our guidelines to follow for our new address membership book. She had Ginny check with all members present to see if we have their correct address, phone number, birth date, and husband’s name for our new 2014 address book. Irene also had a list of how many years each member has been in the Circle. She had that I have been a member for 46 years. That surprised me. I don’t remember if Ann Clagett was asked or she volunteered, but she will cut the squares for our next year Polka Festival Junior Sokol Quilt. Ginny Svehlak read two cute newspaper clippings. One was about a woman with 15 children, really funny, can’t remember the other one. Ginny Svehlak and Dorothy Bobalek brought and showed how they dress little dolls. They have a pat-

tern; it didn’t look hard. One of these days, I may try one as I have two great-granddaughters. They were all so pretty, and they do a beautiful job. They dress them for the St. John Catholic Church carnival. Irene brought her small quilting frames, and she showed how to stretch the little baby quilt that she and Ann had pieced. Ann and I quilted on it. Lil thanked all for returning the squares that she passed out last meeting. She will sew them together soon. Sunshine Lady Eleanora announced our April birthday celebrants - Joyce Ehrenberger and Dorothy M. Kudrna. A card was signed for Dorothy M. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Joyce and Olga Krysinski whom we forgot last month. Sorry, Olga! Eleanora also mentioned that we all signed a birthday card in January for Libbie Elsik, and that it was returned last week. Eleanora will try to find out Libbie’s new address. Someone suggested that we not have little gift exchange and door prizes any more, and that we start having a 50-50 dollar game. It was voted on and passed. It will start in July. We have three members who have friendship quilts made by our members in 1959, 1960, and 2000. They were part of show-and-tell, and it was so nice to see our mothers’ squares with their names on them. All thought we should make one now in 2013 or 2014. Next month, Irene has asked for Victoria Vlk’s daughter Sally Long of the Ennis Blue Bonnet Quilters Guild to bring and show some of the quilts she has made. I am looking forward to seeing her quilts. The Circle wants to thank Henrietta Milan in Fort Worth for donating several items to our Circle for the July elephant sale and for show-and-tell. We will sell chances on our baby quilt, and the lovely items Henrietta donated. Irene also mentioned that Sokol Senior Gym Class will be hosting National Senior Citizen workout day on May 29 as we did last year at Sokol Hall. We hope all can attend. We had a great time last year. Lil Kosarek brought the door prize, and it was won by Joyce Ehrenberger. Little gifts were then handed out. President Irene thanked all for coming, for the food, the set up, the clean up, and that our next meeting will be May 19. Dorothy Prachyl made a motion that the meeting be adjourned; it was seconded by Georgie Morales.

Other News Joyce and Joe Ehrenberger were leaving the next day to Charlotte, North Carolina, to spend a week with their daughter, husband, and two grandchildren. Dorothy Prachyl was happy to have Easter visitors from Colorado, Houston, and Kennedale. Pete and I had a wonderful Easter with all our family, but not Libbie this time. She was with Lil’s family at Bill Kosarek’s home. Take care, everyone. We will meet on May 9, quilt, have lunch, door prize, and little gift exchange. We hope to see you all. Fort Worth Friendship Club
The Friendship Club met on Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at St. Thomas Parish Dining Room for our monthly meeting. President Betty Krenek called the meeting to order and welcomed all. Our guests were Rose Ann’s neighbor Nadine, Elizabeth Joy, originally from Florida, and Gloria. Thanks for coming ladies and hope to see you again. The Pledge of Allegiance was said. Then, Vice President Alene Kercho read a poem “I Know that God Loves Me,” which was enjoyed by all. Secretary Elizabeth Creamer read the minutes from the last meeting, and Treasurer Jo Ann Wilcox gave the financial report. Both were accepted as presented. Sunshine Person Paula Hall reported on sending get well cards to Elsie Anders and Marvin Grayson;
that he recently purchased. Brother Billy says the tractor that still can run sat in someone’s barn for 60 years.
thinking of you cards were sent to Mary Schneider, Lola Taylor, Darlene Tompkins, Linda Horner, Lucille Kret, Debbie Skrasek, and Mary Agnes Ward; and a sympathy card was sent to Alicia Castillo on the death of her sister. Rose Ann Spann reported Lucille Kret is back at her assisted living home, and Linda Horner is still in the nursing home. Linda, our prayers are with you for a complete recovery. Betty stated there is a donation box on the table in the event anyone would like to make a monetary donation to St. Thomas Food Pantry along with a cart by the door to deposit your nonperishable food items. All were thanked for their donations. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to April celebrants of Lydia Alholm, Linda Horner, Marie Keller, Alene Kercho, Rose Ann Spann, and Patti Williams. May you all have many more. The July eating out social was discussed, and all were asked to come up with suggestions. Hostesses for May will be Alicia Castillo, Sharron Connelly and Marie Keller. Hostesses for April were thanked — Alicia Castillo, Pat McWilliams, Lois Smith and all their helpers. Rose Ann Spann and Lola Taylor were thanked for the flower decorations on all the tables. Kathy Ormsbee was missed, but Stanley Krenek made out like the “chicken lady” and made the run for our fried chicken for lunch. Thanks, Stanley. Mary Ann Kozel suggested a token donation be given to Kathy as thanks for her efforts each month in picking up the chicken. This was approved. Discussion was held on masses being said for a deceased member, and it was suggested that they be spread out and not all said in the same week. In the future, if the family decides on Masses, they will be spread out. Door prizes were brought by Paula
Arsenault and Elizabeth Creamer with lucky winners being Marie Keller and Lola Taylor. Winners of the 50/50 dollar game were Mary Ann Kozel and Alene Kercho. Vice President Alene read a funny story which was enjoyed. Following the meeting, grace was said and a wonderful luncheon was enjoyed. Then, games were played and a good time was had by all.
News My friends from Dallas—Joe and Joyce Ehrenberger—came to Fort Worth, and we visited the Titanic Exhibit at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History. It was most enjoyable. We saw a first class passenger room and a third class room. In first class, there was a huge four poster bed, seating area with table, while third class had two small twin beds with a little table in between the beds. First class dishes were blue with gold trim; third class were plain with the ship’s insignia in the middle. They had lots of artifacts and told the whole story of the ship –most interesting. As you entered the exhibit, you were given a boarding pass with an actual person’s name making the trip, where they were from, what class they traveled, and at the end you could find out if you survived or not. Well, I was Clara (Mrs. Henry William) Frauenthal, age 42, from New York. Although Clara and Henry met in America, they decided to marry in England and were returning home following the wedding ceremony and were accompanied by Henry’s brother, Isaac, a successful New York lawyer. We were traveling in the first class section, and I was a survivor. Don’t recall who Joe and Joyce were, but they didn’t survive. From there, we went to eat hamburgers at “In and Out” and then went

Lydia, we appreciate the taxes you have to pay each time! Helen Skrasek celebrated Easter at the home of son Gary and Debbie. Della Green Della married Jerome Green, the love of her life, on October 26, 1937, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Cyclone. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone. She was also a lifelong member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and St. Mary’s Altar Society, Cyclone. Della understood the gift of giving. She used her God-given talents to make floral arrangements and decorations for her church. She took special interest in decorating for Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving, incorporating the help of church ladies to make the house of God special. On February 2, 1998, she was presented with the Yellow Rose of Texas

award for her outstanding service by Governor George W. Bush. June 2008 brought her the Lumen Gentium Award for outstanding service to her church presented by Bishop Gregory Aymond, Diocese of Austin. You could always find Della in her yard tending the beautiful Bougainvillaeas and many flower beds. Being outdoors and working the yard was her greatest joy. Her many talents also included decorating her beautiful home and sewing for all her four girls and many friends’ weddings. Her home at Christmas time was beautiful. She would begin to decorate in September; yes, it took her that long to decorate every room in her home. Her yard was amazing with nativity, lights, and wreaths. One of her greatest joys was having her children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren in her home for holidays, meals, and visits. She took pride in preparing the entire meal. Wow! What a cook. Della was a faithful and loving wife to Jerome, raising their six children and later contributing to making their business a success. In all their years together, they did manage many long vacations, cruises, a trip to Hawaii, and travels all over the state of Texas. Nothing like a cooler packed with cheese and sausage from the sausage house, maybe a cold drink or two, and a drive in the hill country. Her faith in God and sweet spirit was evident to all who met her because the spirit of the Lord touched people through her loving nature and kind heart. She will be greatly missed by her children Josephine Psencik Wilhelm, Henrietta Miller, Florence Mikeska and husband Dean, Corene Madeley and husband Jim, Marvin Green and wife Billye, and Charles Green and wife Jackie; grandchildren Michele Schoppe and husband Gordon, Michael Psencik and wife Tara, Jeffrey Mikeska, Wendy Lary and husband Trey, Stephanie Honeycutt, Steven Mikeska and wife Melissa, Brian and Darren Madeley, Chad Green, Kyle Green and wife Lindsay, Todd Green and wife Alicia, Kayla Green, and Devin Green; great-grandchildren Macy and Noel Psencik, Sarah Schoppe, Camm Lary, IV, Grace Adella Lary, Emily and Ashley Honeycutt, Meredith and Dylan Mikeska, and Cooper Green; and step-grandchildren Christi Lovelace, Shelly Humbert; and step-great-grandchildren Justin Marshall, Ashlyn and Laley Lovelace, and Braden Humbert.

District Four Youth Counselor reports on past, upcoming events
What a fast paced year this has been! Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve as District Four Youth Counselor for this past year. It has been very busy, but a fun and educational experience. There are currently four youth clubs in District Four—Lodge 229, Abilene; Lodge 219, El Paso; Lodge 215, South Plains; and Lodge 49, Rowena. We have a great group of young people who have been busy not only with their local youth clubs but with school, athletic, community, and church activities. I am proud to be a small part in each of their lives! We are so fortunate to have the support of our Supreme Lodge and our local lodges, members, and parents. I want to personally say thank you to our past State Youth Director Frank Horak for all of his help and support and to our current State Youth Director Lynette Talasek for all of her help in the short time she has been in her position. Also, thank you to Melanie and the Vestnik for their support and always having our articles in front of the membership! My first project as DYC was getting our young leaders to Leaders-inTraining camp in Ledbetter at the SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm (ENC) last June, as I had a prior commitment. Pam
Lehmann took the girls, Ana and Kaycee, for me. Then, came camp in July. We had 20 youth and adult leaders attend from District Four. This was a fun and busy three days! Youth Achievement Day was held in July at Lodge 49, Rowena hall. Talk about talent—this district has many youth with much potential! I was overwhelmed at the many projects and so varied! We had 13 projects advance to state competition. I know I learned from this experience. Thank you to Janeece Williams for all of her help in getting me organized and making my first YAD a success! Also, we had some wonderful people to serve as judges—they were super! We had only one district outing— we went to two museums in Sweetwater and had lunch there. The young people did enjoy both museums, but I think the Air Force Museum had a lot of history that many of us were unaware of. But it may have been a bit “much” for the younger members. They were a good bunch to take on an outing. The float from the SPJST Home Office was in Hawley with the Abilene Youth Club in December 2012 and in Ballinger with the Rowena Youth Club in November. All of the members enjoyed riding on the beautiful float. The float won first place in both parades. Thank you, Melanie and David and John and Lisa, for driving for us! Audree Williams is representing District Four as our queen, along with her duchess, Addee Williams. We are well represented by these two young ladies.
all of Lodge 162, Iowa Colony; Treasurer Bailey Stavinoha and Reporter Evan Stavinoha, both of Lodge 81, Needville; and Sergeant-at-Arms Zachary Collins of Lodge 162, Iowa Colony. The youth discussed plans for a social as well as a districtwide charity event.
Some of the many activities our youth clubs have participated in are the Flag Day Essay Contest, 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive, Join Hands Day, and Make a Difference Day. Also, some of our members help put out flags on the veterans’ graves on Memorial Day and Veterans Day. They are a busy bunch! District Four Youth Achievement Day will be held on June 29 at SPJST Lodge 49, Rowena hall. I would like to invite all of you to come and see what our young people can do. I am looking forward to working with the youth clubs in our district for another year. I do believe we have a brighter future as these young people grow and become our leaders of tomorrow! District Five Youth Gather for Winter Workshop/Retreat at SPJST ENC
Saturday, February 23 and Sunday, February 24, 2013 • SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm
On February 23, 2013, District Five visited SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) at Cooper Farm for a workshop and retreat. We started the day at 10 a.m. with a group of gentlemen who were retired police and FBI agents. They discussed with everyone the importance of what to do in a crisis situation. There were question and answer sessions, and all of the youth seemed to interact well the officers and agents. The officers discussed bullying and why it is so very important to have it stop. Last was probably the most interesting for the kids to see. They brought in the drug dogs, Lou Lou and Zeus. They planted various types of drugs. Then, the dogs went to work. The kids really thought it was cool that the dogs could pick it out so well. ENC Director John Hoelscher cooked burgers and hot dogs for us, and we all enjoyed lunch. After lunch, we set out for our “mini camp” that began with canoeing in the pond. Youth had a blast trying to race each other. Lisa Hoelscher decided she wanted to see how cold the water was
and took a dip in the pond! Next, we went to the high ropes. Lodge donated 88 money from Thursday night kitchen bingo sales to purchase small harnesses for the younger youth. Everyone was able to participate and had a good time. This will be a plus at camp this summer. We enjoyed a spaghetti dinner with salad and dessert and then set out for the hay ride. Once we came back, there were crafts for the youth to do and some even went and played in

the gaga pit outside. We went back to the cabins and got ready for bed. On Sunday morning, Leader-in-
Training Cole Collins and chaperone Jack Manchak were already busy in the kitchen before any of the other chaperones could get there to start it. It was great! They had the pancakes and bacon ready for us. This was the first time that the ENC was rented out for a weekend retreat by SPJST other than summer camp. I hope that other districts will decide to utilize that facility and rent it to have lock-ins, district trips, etc. It was especially nice since the weather was cool and not so hot. I would like to say a huge thank you to District Five Youth Counselor Barbara Linney for all of the hard work and preparation that she put into this weekend retreat to make it such an enjoyable time for everyone. We really appreciate you, and I know I can speak for most of the kids and say, “We want to go back!” Fraternally, Michelle Wockenfuss Assistant Youth Leader Lodge 88, Houston —SPJST—

Czech Class Held in West
Lodge 180, Burleson member Joe Janecka instructed a Czech class in West, Texas, that ended on Monday, April 1. Joe reports a good turnout with students coming from as far as Mansfield, Temple, and Killeen. CENTER PHOTO: Class participants. In front is Instructor Joe Janecka. Second row: Alice Janecka, David Laubert, Margie Mashek Davis, Linda Straten, Dorothy Straten, Karen Osbourne, Tammy Neill, Misty Nors Kaska, Lisa Nors, Valerie Grimm, and Brian Kaluza. Charlie weaves many threads together to create an intriguing book that is hard to put down. One thread is the history of the Czech people from different origins, different faiths, and dominated by outside governments. Another thread is of his families that were entrepreneurs and community leaders. Still another thread is that of a youngster whose father goes far away to join the British Army to fight the occupiers of his homeland. This includes arbitrary loss of family at the hands of the occupiers, his mother being horribly oppressed, and his growth despite the circumstances. The family became American and achieved success through hard work in the manner of the classic American melting pot. Charlie was invited by the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences to visit his homeland in 1970. The reason for the invitation was his work in a revolutionary application of computers, computer-aided design. His parents were reluctant about his accepting the invitation because they were listed as enemies of the state. Sue, his wife, was excited and insisted that she and their young son accompany him. This rewarding experience was not without tense moments, and Charlie describes them with drama and humor. Charlie has made many trips to the Czech Republic since the Velvet Revolution. He has given workshops and seminars to managers of newly-privatized companies on entrepreneurship and doing business in a market economy. This has also enabled him to reconnect with family and childhood friends. He has served the Czech culture in the United States through the
board of the SVU (Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences) and many other ways. The books will be available for purchase at a bookstore or gift shop associated with each of the sites or at a bookstore designated by the site. —SPJST—

• Letters to Bibbie •
This article is one of a series of “Letters to Bibbie, ” written by Ivo Marek to his distant relative Vickie (Bibbie) Cooper of Granger, Texas. Ivo and his parents live in Choceň, Czech Republic. Ivo is an engineer by profession and an accomplished weaver and textile artist. In addition, his hobbies are gardening, cooking, and fine-tuning his English.
Dear Bibbie, Today I will write about the city Pardubice and its surrounding. It is big city, historic, with the department capital in East Bohemia on the main railway from Prague to Olomouc. It is on the confluence of the rivers Labe and Chrudimka. The city has almost 90,000 inhabitants. University Pardubice, where I studied, is located here. Pernštýnské Square, Green gate, Old Town and Manor-house belongs to the history center in the city, which since 1964 is an urban conservation area.
The first recorded mention of Pardubice dates from 1295; the first owner was Púta from Dubé at the beginning of the 14th century. Ernest from Pardubice, the first Prague archbishop, was one of his descendants. The noble house Lords of Pardubice had on its coat-of-arm a white (silver) half of a horse with a gold curb on a red shield. Pardubice was promoted to a small town about 1336. Vilém from Pernstone, the most powerful nobleman of that time in the Czech kingdom, bought Pardubice at the end of 15th century. He began reconstructing a water defense system on the Pardubice fortress. Then there was a period of stagnation due to the influence of the 30 years’ war. The town went through new progress in the mid 19th century when the first steam train arrived in Pardubice.

In the second half of 19th century, industries arose such as a spirits` distillery, sugar mill, milling machines and other productions. The City theater was built in 1909. Engineer Jan Kašpar piloted the first airplane on a long flight from Pardubice to Velká Chuchle near Prague on May 13, 1911. Allied air forces bombed Pardubice in 1944, with 870 tons of bombs; 263 folks perished. After World War II, construction began with the building of new blocks of flats (apartments) and a railway station. Pardubice became the industrial center of East Bo-
hemia. It is known for chemical, grocery, electro-technical and machine industry. Since the 16th century, Pardubice is famous for production of decorated gingerbread. The name Pardubice gingerbread is a protected designation of origin in the EU. Furthermore, Pardubice is famous for its beer, Pernštejn, and its packaged coffee. Majority of international trains stops at the railway station. The city is an important roadway crossing. Public transportation includes buses, trolleybuses and the ship Arnošt, which also serves as a cruise ship. The airport
provides a mix of military and civil aeronautic traffic. Since 1874, the famous steeplechase horse race takes part every fall in Pardubice; it is the hardest steeplechase in Europe and the second hardest in the World. The most successful entrant of the steeplechase is jockey Josef Váňa with eight wins from 1987– 2011. Ice hockey is played on artificial ice in ČEZ Arena (sport hall). Culture institutions are some galleries, libraries, museums, Czech radio, observatory, and the mountain castle Kunětická Hora.

Some famous personalities: Smil Flaška from Pardubice (14th century Czech nobleman and writer), Dagmar Pecková (contemporary opera singer), Jan Neruda (poet), Josef Gočár (architect), and Antonín Dvořák (music composer). Nobody is bored in Pardubice. Everybody can give to his interest such as study; culture; sports; therapeutic spa, Bohdaneč, or enjoy the gingerbread. Come see for yourself! Yours faithfully, Ivo —SPJST—
