his 100th birthday on December 13th, 2013. A large number of persons gathered to honor Milady. Attendees included representatives from both her Blaha family and from her husband’s Hejl family, along with many of her long-time friends from a class at University United Methodist Church in Fort Worth. Milady’s physical health is still reasonably good. On good days, can she respond reasonably well during conversations. At times, she is still able to converse in Czech, the only language she spoke until she was about seven years old. Outdoor Life Article Thanks to Glenn Kaminsky of Lodge 28, East Bernard for sharing an article given to him by Edward Klecka, also of Lodge 28. The article entitled “His Father’s Gun” by Dušan Smetana (section edited by John B. Snow; photographs by Rab Cummings) appeared in the March 2013 issue of Outdoor Life magazine. The article is about Dušan leaving his native Czechoslovakia and its Communist system of government to make a new life in the United States. Dušan could not take his father’s hunting rifle with him; however, a new CZ 550 gun helped Dušan reconnect to the traditions of his homeland. —SPJST—

Lodge 39, Bryan member shares poems from across the ocean
Dear Melanie, I am a member of Lodge 39, Bryan. I am also a British war bride coming to USA in 1946. I keep in touch with my schoolfriend Winnie. We are both 88 years old. This week, she sent me some poems that she wrote, and I thought it would be nice to pass them around since they come from the other side of the world - 6,000 miles away. Winnie has only been writing these poems in the last six months. I hope you get as much enjoyment reading them as I did. Thank you, Proud to be an SPJST member Ruth Kolbasinski

It makes one wonder what is holding them there, and where do they go to when the sky is bare. There is one bright star that shines above, which brings to mind of the one I love.

60 years have flown since the day we wed Looking back at the old days thoughts turn in my head.
We did not own a pot of gold or luxuries abound, but happiness came within our hearts from the simple things around.
Holidays were simple, near the Sea and Sand, watching the children with Bucket and Spade, we thought that life was grand.
Thoughts drift back to the old days, when life was just a chore, but we would like to have it all again those simple times once more. Today is fast, selfless, with no time to spare no thought for others, to show how much we care. But life goes on regardless but at our age we just can’t understand, all this new technology that the world had found.
It’s simple things we live for as we do our daily chores, and the happiness within our hearts will live forever more.

The single most important attitude for you to carry into your presentation/closing interview is this one: I will take the initiative and assist my prospect in making the buying decision. The prospect will seldom ever close the sale. I must supply the motivation.

SPJST Model Lodge Program: Best Practice No. 6
An SPJST Youth Club can be a wonderful way to attract young people to your lodge and to the ideals of fraternalism. The mission of the SPJST Youth Program is to provide a well-rounded educational, patriotic, and social program. It’s also about having fun! Through participation in local youth clubs and statewide events, youngsters between the ages of five and 18 develop a greater awareness of the common bonds that we all share. SPJST Youth Clubs also work with schools, churches and other community organizations to tailor programs to fit local needs.
Lodge supports an active youth club.
Five Tips for Starting an SPJST Youth Club at Your Lodge
Bring together a small core group of young people and parents who believe in the mission of the SPJST Youth Program. Gather for a group meeting and brainstorm ideas for the club. Seek to include the District Youth Counselor and State Youth Director in this session.
Have the fledgling youth club work to establish a vision and mission for the new club. Answer some of these questions together: Why are we starting this youth club? Who specifically do we intend to reach? Where do we want to be this time next year? In five years? What kind of atmosphere do we intend to create for the young people, socially and charitably?
Launch the youth club and have fun! Be aware, too, that the SPJST Home Office will provide a $250 stipend to a newly established or reorganized youth club. If the club is up and running strong in six months, an additional $250 stipend will be extended to the club for their social and charitable activities. After six months or so, reevaluate your youth club’s goals and strategy and make whatever tweaks are necessary.
Your First Move? As previously stated in Best Practice No. 2, in the event that your lodge does not have a youth club, consider the merits of electing a Youth Leader to “be there” for young people who attend the meeting and to plan youth-oriented activities in conjunction with activities of the lodge.
SPJST Summer Camp fosters a spirit of cooperation, forms an appreciation of the natural environment, and helps campers to achieve their leadership potential. SPJST Summer Camp is provided for SPJST young people at no charge on the basis of their active participation. SPJST sponsors Youth Achievement Day (YAD) competitions on the district and state levels as an educational activity for SPJST Youth Club members. Contestants field entries in a range of areas including arts and crafts, music, dance, drama, and public speaking.
Young people who wish to participate in YAD must be a member by January 1 of the previous year in addition to meeting other contest guidelines. SPJST youth clubs help to widen contacts among young people and help to structure informal social relationships between the adult and youth members. Most of the adults that young people interact with in their daily lives are authority figures such as teachers, parents and business people. Young people often expect adults to treat them as children and are amazed to be treated as a full partner and taken seriously. That’s the spirit that we need to convey in our SPJST youth clubs. SPJST Youth Clubs should be valued and supported by the Society and by the local lodge as the club can make a big difference in the lives of many young people and their communities.
SPJST Youth Club activities can provide the warm, safe, friendly space for young people that they say they want. It can give them real power and ownership in the Society.
SPJST Scholarship Program Knowledge is power. SPJST encourages its outstanding young members to continue their educational development. Since its inception, the SPJST Scholarship Program has awarded more than $1.2 million to deserving, college-bound youth. Selections are based on academics and leadership. Active youth may also qualify for educational scholarships. If you have any questions about participation in the SPJST Youth Program, please browse the SPJST Youth Handbook. The book is available online at spjst.org. Hard copies are also available upon request from the SPJST Home Office. —SPJST—

Jerry and Janie Marusak Celebrate 60 Years of Marriage
Jerry and Janie Marusak will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on May 9, 2013. They first met at St. John’s Catholic Church in Ennis at the young ages of 17 and 21. They married on May 9, 1953, and had the traditional Czech wedding mass at 10 a.m. on a Saturday at St. John’s Catholic Church in Ennis, Texas. Following the wedding mass, it was tradition to serve homemade chicken noodle soup for lunch at the Czech dance hall then the wedding gifts would be opened by the bride and groom with anxious guests admiring the gifts. The wedding cakes would also be cut and served following the gift opening. Then at 5 p.m., the Czech supper would be served with the typical Czech sausages, complete with sauerkraut, salads, and desserts. A Czech polka band would soon start the grand march with guests participating in the festivities. The band would play until midnight for all to enjoy, young and old. After their marriage, Jerry who was enlisted in the Air Force, was assigned to Alexandria, Louisiana. The newlyweds moved there and welcomed their first child — daughter Janet, the following year. With Jerry spending four years in the Air Force, he received his training as an aircraft mechanic, and they moved back to Texas where Jerry would work in the airline industry his entire career. Janie remained a housewife, and they welcomed another daughter, Jenna, and son, Jerry, Jr. The family would travel back to Ennis each Sunday to visit their families where happy memories will always be held close to their hearts—wonderful Czech homemade meals and time spent with loved ones on the family farms. The couple’s oldest daughter Janet completed her bachelor’s degree in dietics and also completed her Juris Doctorate degree. She practices law in Ellis County. Janet has two children: Ana who currently is in residency in Anderson, South Carolina, and will begin her gynecology residency this July in Pensacola, Florida; and son Andrew is pursuing a career as a pharmacist and is also in Pensacola, Florida. Their second child Jenna is married to David Hunter. They have three children: Rachel graduated from Texas Tech University in Lubbock and was 2005 SPJST State Queen; Bryant will graduate from Tarleton State in Stephenville
with a degree in biology in May and hopes to continue in the field of biomedical engineering this fall; and Jordan also attends college at Tarleton and is an avid roper in Stephenville. All three children were active members at SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis. Their third child Jerry, Jr. is married and resides with his wife and two children in Crowley. They have a son, Alex, who attends college and is majoring in engineering, and a daughter, Marissa, who will be a senior this fall at Crowley High School. Jerry and Janie continue to reside in Ferris where all of their children were raised. They live on a farm where they continue to raise cattle and hay. Jerry retired from his career as an aircraft mechanic of which he has fond memories. He and Janie traveled along with their children throughout the United States and Europe. Janie continues to be a housewife and enjoys cooking and baking. Her specialty is homemade kolaches and egg noodles. She also enjoys genealogy. Janie has researched her own Novy family and her spouse’s Marusak family. Janie continues to update her books as she receives new history on the families. Jerry and Janie are members of Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Ferris and St. John’s Catholic Church in Ennis. They enjoy attending the St. John’s Golden Crusaders monthly meeting for the golden church community members.
Daddy and Momma, we thank you for all of your sacrifices and labors of love. You always put us first instead of yourselves and are always helping others. May you both always have joy, happiness, peace, and all our love. Happy anniversary, Daddy and Momma, Grandpa and Grandma. We all love you. Let’s congratulate this married couple for their everlasting love and commitment to one another, their children, and their grandchildren. Submitted by, Jerry and Janie’s Family —SPJST—

Czech Center Museum Houston sets fundraiser for West victims
To honor those who lost their lives and in recognition of the survivors of the West, Texas, fire and explosion tragedy on Wednesday, April 17, 2013, Czech Center Museum Houston presents Kingwood Chorale Czech it out! Great Music from Dvorak and his Countrymen on Thursday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m. at Czech Center Museum Houston. Proceeds from this event are a memorial fund collection for the West community. The history of America and its music intersects greatly with that of the Czech Republic. That is especially true in Texas, where so many towns in the state were founded by Czech immigrants. On May 9, the Kingwood Chorale will celebrate Czech music with a concert of choral and instrumental music from Antonin Dvorak and his fellow countrymen. “This is beautiful, rich, and exciting music,” says artistic director and conductor Todd Miller. “Czech music really came alive in the Romantic Period of the late 19th Century and the concert will be filled with music from that time.” The signature piece will be Dvorak’s Te Deum (sung in Latin), which the composer wrote in the 1890s while living in New York City. “Many people don’t know that Dvorak lived in America for several years after he became famous and is partially responsible for encouraging American composers to utilize African-American spirituals, hymns, and other indigenous folk music in developing a serious national sound,” said Miller. “We owe Dvorak a debt of gratitude for helping America embrace its own music.” At this festive concert, held at Czech Center Museum Houston in the Museum District, a representative from the West, Texas, community and the CCMH will be present to offer words of welcome. The concert will also fea-

The Brick Sidewalk Czech Collectors available at Association Granger Lake Fest Antique Show SPJST Lodge 20, Granger member and Convention
Darwin Machu, author of The Brick Sidewalk, will have a booth at Granger Lake Fest on Saturday, May 11. He will have his book available for sale, and he will personally sign each copy. This book, which is in its second printing, tells about Darwin’s life while growing up on a farm near Granger, during the 1930s and 1940s. His experiences were almost identical to the experiences of most folks who grew up in those slower paced, by-gone years. Many who have purchased the book have returned to purchase additional copies for other members of their families, especially for their children and grandchildren. For those unable to attend the Lake Fest Celebration, the book may be purchased from Darwin by sending a check for $27 ($22, plus $5 shipping/handling) to Darwin Machu, 11 Stillmeadow, Round Rock, Texas 78664. —SPJST—
