Recycle Your Capri Sun Pouches The Vestnik received a request from Lodge 18, Elgin Youth Club member Kody-Lee Laws recently. Kody-Lee is asking Vestnik readers to help him recycle Capri Sun pouches for his school. He writes, “I am collecting Capri Sun pouches to help raise money for my school, and I am asking for your help.” If you drink Capri Sun, please save your pouches for Kody-Lee. You can send the pouches to us and we will be sure to get them to Kody-Lee. Please mail to SPJST Vestnik, PO Box 100, Temple, TX 76503. Or, if you are in the Temple area, drop them by the Home Office at 520 North Main Street. Thank you!

How The Poor Live One day, a father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the firm purpose of showing his son how poor people live. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family. On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, “How was the trip?” “It was great, Dad.” “Did you see how poor people live?” the father asked. “Oh yeah,” said the son. “So, tell me, what did you learn from the trip?” asked the father. The son answered, “I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden, and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden, and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard, and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece of land to live on, and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us; they have friends to protect them.” The boy’s father was speechless. Then his son added, “Thanks, Dad, for showing me how poor we are.” —Author Unknown —SPJST—

District Three Queen expresses scholarship thanks

Dear SPJST, Just want to take time to thank you for the nice scholarship money I received for my college education. I will be starting this summer with one class— just to get my feet wet. Then, I will return to Tyler

Junior College for the fall semester where I will apply for nursing school that begins in the spring. I have gained so much for being a part of SPJST and will carry with me many valuable things learned that I can apply to my future aspirations in life. And, to all my fellow fraternal brothers and sisters at SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis . . . I will miss you! Keep up all the good work, and I know there will be several Kings and Queens come out of Lodge 25! Sincerely yours, Reagan Langer 2012 SPJST District Three Queen —SPJST—

SPJST Model Lodge Program: Best Practice No. 7

VӖSTNÍK

Lodge records a net increase in membership

There is a direct correlation between the quality of lodge activities and events and the capacity of that lodge to record a net increase in member participation and/or membership. The more attractive the lodge meeting looks — not only to non-members, but current members as well, the more likely the lodge and Society are to attract new members. The most important thing that you can do to retain members or attract new members is to make the lodge experience fun, productive, accessible and exciting. Treat existing members and the ones involved now like gold. As a membership-based organization, it is important that we, as lodge leaders, provide value to members and educate non-members about the benefits of membership, resulting in new members for the local lodge. SPJST lodges aren’t peddling a product, per se, but lodge leaders as well as active members “sell” their lodge and their activities all the time. As SPJST leaders, we are in a position to offer personal testimonials to others on the benefits of membership in SPJST — both from a financial perspective and from a humanitarian and social perspective. Convey to nonmembers how involvement can benefit their children and the community. What are you doing now as a lodge leader to make the lodge and SPJST activities a friendly and enjoyable experience? Consider where you are meeting — if you do not have a building — as well as the date and time of your meetings. Are they convenient for the members? Even as SPJST recommends that lodge leaders adhere to the basic Order of Proceedings in SPJST Lodge Meetings, lodge leaders are encouraged to develop programs to com-

1. Promote some aspect of Czech heritage and culture. If a large percentage of your membership is of a common heritage, take it as an opportunity to celebrate that culture. 2. Plan annual ceremonies and ritual events to build lodge spirit and help all members feel part of the group.

A delicious buffet dinner will be served starting at 7 p.m. in appreciation of your attendance. The meeting will follow, and door prizes will be awarded. SPJST is a family organization that cherishes the idea of service to each other and the community. In addition to reviewing your benefits of membership in the SPJST, Society officials want to visit with lodge members and

receive input in helping to make decisions which will determine the future course of direction for Lodge 156, Baytown and its members. Feel free to extend this invitation to others in your household or friends who are not already members. Please RSVP on or before 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 15 by calling Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez (800) 727-7578. Thank you for your attention and consideration. I look forward to seeing you on May 16. Fraternally, Brian Vanicek Supreme Lodge President —SPJST—

3. Involve the youth and provide them with an opportunity to showcase their Youth Achievement Day skits and speeches.

4. Meals and snacks can make a positive difference. People love snacks and refreshments. Consider assigning a meal or snack volunteer for each meeting so you change up the refreshments throughout the year.

5. Host a wine or beer tasting — after the meeting. On the flip side: Host a coffee or tea tasting.

6. Host a movie or documentary film night. Or, even better, bring in a guest speaker with the capacity to entertain, amuse and educate your members. 7. Game Night. Dominoes, cards and bunco are great; however, keep in mind that you're not limited to store-bought games. For games like charades and the name game, all you need are strips of paper and a good imagination. Remember, there’s tarok, too. Don’t know how to play? Then it may be time for Tarok Training Night.

8. Host cooking demonstrations. Consider bringing in a cook or a chef from a local restaurant. Learn to bake kolaches!

9. Host parties based on time of year. (Valentine’s Day, Czech Heritage Month, Christmas, etc.) 10. Consider a periodic “off-site” meeting. Consider meeting on site at a local business, restaurant, historical site, museum and let a tour of the facility be your program. —SPJST—

The May meeting was a fun one. Jennave Fuchs started our entertainment by sharing an old songbook— “All American Songbook.” This book

Lodge 169, Brenham hosts SPJST Float in Maifest Parade Saturday, May 4, 2013 • Brenham, Texas

was the first songbook that was made free of charge to the schools. It was filled with patriotic and influential American songs and also had songs about mothers. Jennave mentioned that today’s kids are not taught songs about their mothers or all the wonderful patriotic songs. We all remembered our mothers by going around and saying our mother’s first and middle names and also their age and if they were living or passed. Tom Etheredge had the oldest mother who is still living at 101 years young . . . and she still lives at home and drives. Wow! So wonderful! Mona Larson had a guest who accompanied her to this meeting. His name is Stanley “Swede” Erickson. Swede is a former chaplain in the Air Force and a retired pastor. We all loved his company and hope that he returns on a regular basis. At the meeting, we discussed the January through June incentive reports, and JoAnn Oman needs to have them filled out and ready by the June meeting. We discussed the Join Hands Day accomplishments and plans for continuing of the clean-up project of our lodge building. David “Red” Oman discussed the local lodge scholarship for graduating high school seniors and formed a volunteer review committee. The committee consists of Johnnie Haak, JoAnn Oman, and Janie Barron. Thank you, ladies, for volunteering. Mr. Oman reminded everyone of the Corpus getaway and about the up-

Lodge 191, Lufkin sets May 17 dance

We had a really good crowd on Friday night, April 19, 2013, that danced to the music of Buffalo Nickel. The band members were good vocalists and played all kinds of music. George Scogin played his saxophone some with them. How anyone can get up and play with a band and not have practiced with them is a mystery to me, but they all did a good job. Those of you who missed it missed a very good time. We want to thank Elizabeth Cavanaugh for helping out in the snack bar. Working in the snack bar or at the door selling tickets, you get to talk to just about everyone. Also, thank you to all of you who brought food for our food table. The turnout for our dance lessons

was amazing. We had around 60 students and some very good teachers. The teachers for three weeks were Bernard and Catherine Hylands. The line dance teachers were John Lilley, Diane Hobbs, and Diane Clevenger. A big thank you to all of you from all of us. All of you did an excellent job! Our next dance will be May 17 with Glenn Lenderman. He and his friends

The place is the SPJST Lodge 191 Hall, located at 197 Hughes Road, which is the old skating rink in Fuller Springs. The time is 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. The cost is $5 for members and $6 for non-members. Come on out for a good time and lots of exercise!

Next Meeting—May 16 Our next lodge meeting is May 16. We need more of our members at the regular meeting each month. Please mark it on your calendar and come out to support your lodge. The time is 7 p.m. It usually only lasts about an hour. This is where all of the decisions of the lodge are made. The lodge sends its sincerest sympathy to the family of Tommie Montes. She and her husband Arnold were longtime members of the SPJST lodge where they loved to dance. Our prayers are with the family. We have four new social members. They are Jeannine Butler, John Lilley, and Marvin and Diane McDowell. We welcome all of you. Alma Breazeale underwent surgery on April 24. This was supposed to have been an outpatient surgery, but she stayed in the hospital for almost a week. She was released yesterday and was very glad to get home to her own bed. She is doing well. Joel, hope you are doing better also. We still need hosts for some of the dances for the rest of the year. It is not a hard job. All you have to do is be friendly and sell Cokes and tickets. Until next time, Pat Scogin —SPJST—

Last Cab Ride

Editor’s Note: Thanks to Supreme Lodge Chairman and District One Director Donnie Victorick for sharing this story with the Vestnik. I arrived at the address and honked the horn. After waiting a few minutes I honked again. Since this was going

to be my last ride of my shift, I thought about just driving away, but instead I put the car in park and walked up to the door and knocked. “Just a minute,” answered a frail, elderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across the floor. After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 90s stood before me. She was wearing a

print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940s movie. By her side was a small nylon suitcase. The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets. There were no clocks on the walls, no knick-knacks or utensils on the counters. In the corner was a card-

board box filled with photos and glassware. “Would you carry my bag out to the car?” she said. I took the suitcase to the cab, then returned to assist the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the curb. She kept thanking me for my kindness. “It’s nothing,” I told her. “I just

try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother to be treated.” “Oh, you’re such a good boy,” she said. When we got in the cab, she gave me an address and then asked, “Could you drive through downtown?” “It’s not the shortest way,” I answered quickly. “Oh, I don’t mind,” she said. “I’m in no hurry. I’m on my way to a hospice.” I looked in the rear-view mirror. Her eyes were glistening. “I don’t have any family left,” she continued in a soft voice. “The doctor says I don’t have very long.” I quietly reached over and shut off the meter. “What route would you like me to take?” I asked. For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as an elevator operator. We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newlyweds. She had me pull up in front of a furniture warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl. Sometimes she’d ask me to slow in front of a particular building or corner and she would sit, staring into the darkness, saying nothing. As the first hint of sun was creasing the horizon, she suddenly said, “I’m tired. Let’s go now.” We drove in silence to the address she had given me. It was a low building, like a small convalescent home, with a driveway that passed under a portico. Two orderlies came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up. They were solicitous and intent, watching her every move. They must have been expecting her. I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to the door. The woman was already seated in a wheelchair. “How much do I owe you?” She asked, reaching into her purse. “Nothing,” I said. “You have to make a living,” she answered. “There are other passengers,” I responded. Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly. “You gave an old woman a little moment of joy,” she said. “Thank you.” I squeezed her hand, and then walked into the dim morning light. Behind me, a door shut. It was the

sound of the closing of a life. I didn’t pick up any more passengers that shift. I drove aimlessly, lost in thought. For the rest of that day, I could hardly talk. What if that woman had gotten an angry driver, or one who was impatient to end his shift? What if I had refused to take the run, or had honked once, then driven away? On a quick review, I don’t think that I have done anything more important in my life. We are conditioned to think that our lives revolve around great moments. But great moments often catch us unaware . . . beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one. People may not remember exactly what you did or what you said, but they will always remember how you made them feel. —Author Unknown —SPJST—

Armed Forces Day History

On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, and Air Force Days. The single-day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under one department — the Department of Defense. Each of the military leagues and orders was asked to drop sponsorship of its specific service day in order to celebrate the newly announced Armed Forces Day. The Army, Navy, and Air Force leagues adopted the newly formed day. The Marine Corps League declined to drop support for Marine Corps Day but supports Armed Forces Day, too. In a speech announcing the formation of the day, President Truman “praised the work of the military services at home and across the seas” and said, “it is vital to the security of the

nation and to the establishment of a desirable peace.” In an excerpt from the Presidential Proclamation of February 27, 1950, Mr. Truman stated:

“Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 20, 1950, marks the first combined demonstration by America’s defense team of its progress, under the National Security Act, towards the goal of readiness for any eventuality. It is the first parade of preparedness by the unified forces of our land, sea, and air defense.” The theme of the first Armed Forces Day was “Teamed for Defense.” It was chosen as a means of expressing the unification of all the military forces under a single department of the government. Although this was the theme for the day, there were several other purposes for holding Armed Forces Day. It was a type of “educational program for civilians,” one in which there would be an increased awareness of the Armed Forces. It was designed to expand public understanding of what type of job is performed and the role of the military in civilian life. It was a day for the military to show “state-of- the-art” equipment to the civilian population they were protecting. And it was a day to honor and acknowledge the people of the Armed Forces of the United States. —SPJST—

• Letters to Bibbie •

This article is one of a series of “Letters to Bibbie, ” written by Ivo Marek to his distant relative Vickie (Bibbie) Cooper of Granger, Texas. Ivo and his parents live in Choceň, Czech Republic. Ivo is an engineer by profession and an accomplished weaver and textile artist. In addition, his hobbies are gardening, cooking, and fine-tuning his English.

Dear Bibbie, Today my talk begins with the town Ivančice na Hané, one of the oldest towns in Moravia. It w a s founded at the beginning of the 13th century and lies in the warm and fertile valley at the confluence of 3 rivers and at the crossroads of ancient trade routes. Inhabitants’ livelihood was mainly wine vine planting and producing. Ivančice is a modern contemporary town with about 9,500 inhabitants. Children and youths learn there in 7 schools. Town leadership attends to ensuring the best function of the town`s infrastructure, about good quality school keeping and culture. The railway bridge over the river from 1870 is the technical monument with the height 42 meters (46 yds.). The most valuable historical monuments are the Roman Church Peter and Paul from the mid-12th century, Gothic church, Baroque Lady`s statue, a public fountain and the town-hall. Interesting is the Alfons Mucha Memorial museum presenting the most famous native Ivančice`s inhabitant. Alfons Mucha (b. 07/24/1860, d. 07/14/1939) was the world-known Czech painter, graphic artist and de-

He was author and head representative personality of decorative secession style, „le style Mucha“or art nouveau. A.M. was born in the family of justice assistant. He had 2 sisters and studied on Slovanské gymnázium in Brno. The Acad-

In 1894 began a positive up in his career: the painter with an original decorative way painted the theatre placard Gismonda for popular Paris actress Sarah Bern-

Petra a Pavla z poloviny 12. století, gotický kostel, barokní mariánské sousoší, kašna a radnice.

Svým všestranným nadáním zasahoval do všech uměleckých oborů. AM zemřel po výslechu gestapem na zápal plic v Praze dne 14. července 1939. Pochován je na v Praze na Vyšehradě. Další osobností vyprávění je Ivan Lendl (dále IL), nar. 07.03.1960 v Ostravě. Je to tenisový trenér, bývalý profesionální tenista, nejlepší český mužský tenista, který reprezentoval Československo a později i USA . IL se r. 1989 oženil s Američankou a má pět dcer .
