Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club members gathered on April 28—11 days after the tragedy in West—for their monthly meeting. The explosion was still very heavy on the minds of the youth. Meeting discussion turned philanthropical as the youth wanted to reach out and do something to help the people in West, Texas, —many of whom are their SPJST brothers and sisters. “These youth club members were so compelled to help out that they wanted to give their entire treasury to the West Benevolence Fund,” Assistant Youth Leader Michelle Wockenfuss said. “After an open discussion, they decided to give the sum of $2,500 so they could also help others with future needs.” But these very giving youth did not stop there. They challenged Lodge 88, Houston’s adult lodge to give the same donation. “Youth Club President Denae Bronikowski went before the board and challenged them,” Sister Wockenfuss stated. “The board voted and approved to match the youth club’s donation of $2,500.” Bingo Chairman JoAnn Buri then announced that the Bingo Committee would also make a $3,000 donation to the fund. Hats off to Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club for its fraternalism in action. “I am so proud of the youth for thinking of others by paying it forward,” Sister Wockenfuss added. “It is a very selfless act.” The youth club met on May 19 to finalize the donation. Youth Club Treasurer Keith Wockenfuss wrote out a check and presented it to Youth Club President Denae Bronikowski to send to the West Benevolence Fund. The youth club also issued a challenge: To each SPJST lodge, youth club, and member across the state—please donate something to West Benevolence Fund. “No matter how big or small the donation is, every dollar is needed and helps make a difference,” Sister Wockenfuss noted. Bloomin’ Success!
hat an awesome partnership . . . Czech Heritage Museum, Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS), and SPJST! Together, we hosted Charles Ota Heller, author of Prague: My Long Journey Home, for a presentation, refreshments, and book signing on May 2 at SPJST Home Office in Temple. Great event! Then, on Saturday, May 11, we teamed up to host a Czech Heritage Celebration in conjunction with the SPJST Car Show at the Bloomin’ Temple Festival in downtown Temple. Another awesome event! The day was filled with 188 vehicles and tractors in the car show. We had music by Mike Middleton and Clayton Capps and “Accordion Cowboy” Chris Rybak. Malinky the Clown delighted all with his charm and creative balloon twisting! SPJST District Two Beseda Dancers performed along with SPJST State Youth Achievement Day winner Amya Rodriguez singing several songs. Miss Texas DaNae Couch enjoyed meeting and greeting attendees, and she entertained us with her baton twirling talent. Thanks to Ratibor Country Grill (owners Edwin and Judy Pechal of Lodge 47, Seaton) for sponsoring DaNae’s visit. The Czech Heritage Museum sponsored several folklife demonstrations, including quilt and lace making, spinning wheel, sauerkraut making, and noodle making. These were so educational and interesting! And, Texas Czech Genealogical Society offered many beautiful items from the Czech Republic. Thanks to President Charlene Hurta and TCGS for this great addition to the event.

The kolache eating contest drew several fierce competitors and is always a delight to watch! The silent auction closed with so many people bidding and buying! Proceeds from the day will benefit the Czech Heritage Museum, located at 119 West French Avenue in Temple, and all of their upcoming projects. Special thanks to each and every person who participated in this year’s Bloomin’ Temple SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration. We appreciate you!
Thanks, King Jerry! Sending a very special thank you to SPJST State King Jerry Pechal and his parents David and Tammy for taking the float to the Granger Lakefest Parade on May 11. All of our float drivers were participating in Bloomin’ Temple or had prior commitments that day. I mentioned this to King Jerry, and he stepped up and said that he would take care of it. What a great leader and a dynamic SPJST State King. I’m going to miss this very helpful and dedicated young man when he completes his reign in August. And, congrats to Jerry and his fellow cast and crew members at Rogers High School for winning the State 2A OneAct Play Championship last week! —SPJST—

June Fraternal Updates
Dear Lodge FAC, Please share the enclosed information at your June lodge meeting.
Reserve Your Room Now for End of Summer Getaway By popular demand, good times again await you at the Corpus Christi Getaway. Make plans now to join us on August 9 to 11, 2013, for a fun-filled weekend. This event gets bigger and better each year. Chris Rybak will again perform on Friday night and all the evening activities at the Aloha Party. The theme for Saturday night will be a tribute to the “Groovy 70s.” In addition to last year’s events, there is another golf tournament planned for Friday, August 9 at one of the local golf clubs. Watch for additional details as they become available. This year, rooms have been blocked in the tower (front section) at Holiday Inn Emerald Beach. If you have not already done so, please make your reservations as soon as possible by calling the hotel at (361) 883-5731 and refer to group code “SPJ” to assure proper room rates.
2014 State Tournaments Letters will be mailed to all lodge presidents and secretaries inviting them to submit their interest in hosting one or more of the 2014 State Tournaments. If your lodge is interested, please submit your intent and choices to my office no later than July 1.
Flag Day—June 14 The week of June 14 is designated as “National Flag Week.” During National Flag Week, the president will issue a proclamation urging United States citizens to fly the American Flag for the duration of that week. In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened that day by res-
olution of the Second Continental Congress in 1777. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day. In August 1949, an Act of Congress established National Flag Day. Please take a few moments on this date to pause and recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag, and we encourage you to talk to your children, grandchildren, and friends about what the flag means to you. Because others have given their lives to secure our freedom, we have the freedom to participate in this national observance. In lieu of the traditional Flag Day celebration in Temple, SPJST will host a Flag Day celebration at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 14 at the William R. Courtney Texas State Veterans Home in Temple. All members and guests are invited to attend the celebration. Your lodge may want to join with veterans organizations in your community and be a part of the celebration. This would count as a patriotic act on your lodge Mid-Year Report.
Observe Father’s Day— Sunday, June 16 In the United States, the first modern Father’s Day celebration was held on July 5, 1908, in Fairmont, West Virginia. It was first celebrated as a church service at Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South, now known as Central United Methodist Church. Grace Golden Clayton, who is believed to have suggested the service to the pastor, is believed to have been inspired to celebrate fathers after the deadly mine explosion in nearby Nonongah the prior December. This explosion killed 361 men, many of them fathers and recent immigrants to the United States from Italy. Another possible inspiration for the service was Mother’s Day, which was recently celebrated for the first time in Grafton, West Virginia, a town about 15 miles away. Another driving force behind the establishment of the integration of Father’s Day was Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd, born in Creston, Washington. Her father, the Civil War Veteran William Jackson Smart, as a single parent raised his six children in Spokane, Washington. She was inspired by Anna Jarvis’ efforts to establish Mother’s

Day. Although she initially suggested June 5, the anniversary of her father’s death, she did not provide the organizers with enough time to make arrangements, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June. The first June Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane. Unofficial support from such figures as William Jennings Bryan was immediate and widespread. President Woodrow Wilson was personally feted by his family in 1916. President Calvin Coolidge recommended it as a national holiday to be celebrated on the third Sunday of June. The holiday was not officially recognized until 1972, during the presidency of Richard Nixon. Therefore, Father’s Day was born as a token of love and gratitude that a daughter cherishes for her beloved father. Roses are for the Father’s Day flowers: red to be worn for a living father and white if the father has died.

SPJST Moravia Cemetery Receives Texas Historic Cemetery Marker
7
Saturday, April 14, 2013 • SPJST Moravia Cemetery in Moravia, Texas
SPJST Moravia Cemetery is located on a 1.3 acre-tract of land in Moravia, Texas, adjacent to the Ascension of Our Lord Cemetery. A pasture borders the cemetery on two sides, and natural vegetation grows in the cemetery. This cemetery was established by SPJST Lodge 23, Nova Morava (New Moravia) in 1922, by Moravian-Czechs.(1) Immigrants from northeastern Moravia settled in the area presently known as Moravia, Texas, in the 1870s. This area had been previously settled by Anglo-Americans who started leaving the area in the late 1860s. The Moravian immigrants brought their culture and Moravian dialect with them.(2) Just like their Moravian homeland, this area provided the Moravian-Czechs with land for their crops, and wood for their heating, cooking, and building needs.(3) Although German immigrants, who had lived with the Czechs in their homeland, also settled in this area, the Czech immigrants outnumbered the German immigrants.(4) Moravia was founded by Jakub Hollub and his son-in-law Ignac (J.E.) Jalufka when they established a store at the junction of three roads in 1881. They named the community after their homeland of Morava. Soon after, a blacksmith shop, a gin, and a school were built. In 1889, J.E. Jalufka built a two story building which housed a mercantile store, saloon, and dance hall.(5) The Moravia School was built on land previously owned by Mrs. Jakub Hollub, J.E. Jalufka, and Frank Blahuta, J.E. Janufka’s son-in-law.(6) In addition, Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Jalufka donated land for the Ascension of Our

Immigrants from Northeastern Moravia (current Czech Republic) settled in the area presently known as Moravia, Texas. Moravia was founded by Jakub Hollub and his son-in-law Ignac (J.E.) Jalufka when they established a store in 1881. They named the community after their homeland of Moravia. A town quickly grew with a blacksmith shop, a gin, a school, store, and more. SPJST Lodge No. 23, Nova Morava was established as a charter member of SPJST (Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas), a non-denominational Czech fraternal organization, in 1897. The first members of the lodge consisted of immigrant farmers, storekeepers, and teachers who met at the Moravia High School. The group built a lodge hall in January 1914 and, in 1922, decided to establish a cemetery. On May 8, 1922, SPJST Lodge No. 23 purchased one and a half acres of land from Frank Blahuta. The first burial in this historic cemetery is that of Willie Trojcak, who was one-and-a-half when he passed away on September 10, 1923. Several veterans from World War I, World War II, and the Persian Gulf are buried here. The cemetery is bordered by pastures and a fence, and includes granite and marble headstones oriented in a feet-to-east position with natural vegetation. Originally, the cemetery was established as a burial place for members of Lodge No. 23 and their families but now anyone may purchase a lot. Burials included Catholic and non-Catholic members. SPJST members provided funeral and burial services to its members in the Czech language. The burials here provide a history of SPJST Lodge No. 23 Czech-Moravians and their families. Jalufka sold to Frank Blahuta.(8) SPJST Lodge 23, Nova Morava was established as a charter member of SPJST (Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas), a non-denominational Czech fraternal benefit society in 1897. The first members of the lodge consisted of immigrant farmers,

storekeepers, and teachers. Ignac Jalufka was elected the first president of Lodge 23. The first meetings of the lodge were held at the Moravia High School. Later the members of Lodge 23 decided to build a lodge hall which was completed in January 1914. The meetings of Lodge 23 were conducted in the Czech language until 1972.(9) The members of SPJST Lodge 23 were patriotic. During World War I
and World War II, Lodge 23 purchased Liberty Bonds and Savings Bonds. Also, the lodge made contributions to the Red Cross. Additionally, some of the lodge members served in the Armed Forces during World War I and World War II.(10) The first members of Lodge 23 took a vow to help its members. First, the lodge offered life insurance to its members. Second, the members of the lodge took care of the sick and paid sick benefits to those in need. Third, when a member suffered a serious accident, or if his home or property was destroyed by fire, local lodge members donated clothing, bedding, food, and cash to the individual. Fourth, members of the lodge helped support widows of deceased members with small children.(11) Last of all, Lodge 23 decided to provide a cemetery for its members and their family.
Overview SPJST Lodge 23 decided to establish a cemetery in 1922. In April 1922, Lodge 23 discussed buying one and half acres of land from Frank Blahuta. The lodge planned to use money in their treasury to purchase the land. They planned to return the money back to their treasury from the sale of cemetery lots. Brothers Louis Breska, Jos. Klapuch, Jan Drozd, Emil Holub, and Jos. Rektorik were put on the cemetery committee to purchase the land. Their duties included looking over the land selected for the cemetery and finding out the price of the land.(12) On May 8, 1922, Lodge 23 purchased one and half acres of land from Frank Blahuta for $300.(13) They paid

Frank Blahuta $100 cash and gave him a $200 Liberty Bond for the rest of the money they owed him.(14) Then, Lodge 23 paid $1 to record the deed in the Lavaca County Courthouse, and the deed was put in a safe deposit box.

In November 1922, SPJST Lodge 23 members discussed the material they would need to buy so they could construct a fence around the cemetery.(16) They purchased barbed wire for $100.(17) It is not known when the fence was installed around the cemetery. SPJST Moravia Cemetery is still an active cemetery. At the present time, 51 individuals are buried there. Czech names are found on the headstones, and 10 headstones are inscribed in Czech. All the graves are oriented in a feet-to-east position. The first person buried in the cemetery was Willie Trojcak, who was nearly one and half years old when he passed away on September 10, 1923. The last person buried in the cemetery was Lorene Lillian Vaculik, who passed away on October 4, 2009.(18) Both Catholic and non-Catholic individuals are buried in the SPJST Moravia Cemetery. SPJST lay ministers conducted some of the funeral and burial services of individuals buried in SPJST

Moravia Cemetery. These SPJST funeral and burial services were conducted in the Czech language. Joseph Trojcak’s funeral services were conducted by SPJST at the Kubena Funeral Home in March 1947.(19) Although Anna Trojcak, Joseph Trojcak’s wife, had her funeral services conducted by a Catholic priest at the Kubena Funeral Home in October 1947, SPJST was in charge of her
gravesite services.(20) Mr. Edward Darilek of Moulton conducted the SPJST funeral and gravesite services of Mr. Edward Kusy, Sr. in 1948.(21) When Mrs. Willie (Hermenia) Klapuch passed away in 1974, Mr. Edward Marek of the SPJST Supreme Lodge conducted her funeral services at the Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Home.(22) Sometimes funeral services were
held at the SPJST lodge hall for individuals buried in SPJST Moravia Cemetery. The lodge hall is located about one-third mile north of the cemetery. Albert Jurena, Jr.’s funeral services were first held at his home under the auspice of the American Legion Post from Moulton, Texas. Then brief services were held at the lodge hall before his burial in SPJST Moravia Cemetery.(23) It is not known if SPJST or the American Legion conducted these services. The visitation of Edward Kusy, Sr. was held at the lodge hall in 1948.(24) His late rites were conducted in the lodge hall. (25) Three charter members of SPJST Lodge 23 are buried in SPJST Moravia Cemetery. Joseph Trojcak, the first financial secretary of Lodge 23, is buried in the cemetery. Anna Trojcak, Joseph Trojcak’s wife, and Joseph Klapuch are the other two charter members buried in the cemetery.(26) Several veterans of the Armed Forces are buried in SPJST Moravia Cemetery. Albert Jurena, Jr., Frank Volsa, Joseph J. Drozd, and Rudolph Klapuch served in World War I. Julius Jurena is the only World War II veteran buried in the cemetery. tery was Glenn Jurena, who served in the Persian Gulf War. Three generations of Jurena veterans are buried in the Jurena Family Lot. SPJST Moravia Cemetery has always been well kept. Emil Vrana mowed the cemetery for many years. Eddie Vrana remembers his father mowing the cemetery when he was a young boy. Years later, Eddie Vrana took over his father’s mowing duties at the cemetery.(27) He stopped mowing the cemetery in his late seventies. In 2002, SPJST District Six Cemetery Organization became responsible for the maintenance of SPJST Moravia Cemetery. This decision was made because many SPJST Lodge 23 members were getting up in age. Also, the name of the cemetery was changed from Moravia SPJST Cemetery to SPJST Moravia Cemetery. On September 10, 2008, SPJST Moravia Cemetery officially became a member of SPJST District Six Cemetery Organization when Lodge 23 members signed the warranty deed.(28) In addition, SPJST Moravia Cemetery became a public cemetery.(29) Originally, the cemetery was established as a burial place for members of Lodge 23 and their families. Now anyone can purchase a lot in SPJST Moravia Cemetery.
Significance SPJST Moravia Cemetery provides a lot of historical significance. It was established in a community which was mainly settled by immigrants from northeastern Moravia in the 1870s. Also, the cemetery was established on land once owned by I g n a c Jalufka, who was one of the founders of Moravia, Texas, and the first president of SPJST Lodge 23. Its graves provide a history of Lodge 23 Czech-Moravian members and their families. Furthermore, three charter members of Lodge 23, including the first financial secretary of the
lodge, are buried in the cemetery. It is also important to note that several military veterans are buried in the cemetery. Additionally, SPJST members provided funeral and burial services to its members in the Czech language, and some funeral services and a visitation were held in the local lodge hall. M o r e o v e r, the SPJST Moravia Cemetery has undergone several changes by having a name change, becoming part of the SPJST District Six Cemetery Organization, and becoming a public cemetery. Finally, SPJST Moravia Cemetery became an official Historic

Fort Worth Friendship Club
15
The Friendship Club met on Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at the St. Thomas Parish Dining Room for our monthly meeting. President Betty Krenek called the meeting to order and welcomed all. Guests were Thula Kekos, mother-in-law to Thelma Smith; Nadine, Rose Ann Spann’s neighbor; and Agnes Saldana, friend of Elizabeth Creamer. Ladies, we enjoyed having you. Come again. The Pledge of Allegiance was said by all, and Vice President Alene Kercho read a poem and asked that we all observe a moment of silence for those in West. Libbie Vrla reported that Willie Mae Becan had two sisters living in the nursing home that was destroyed. One sister had some cuts on her face and neck while the other sister was not harmed. They are both now living in a nursing home in Hillsboro, Texas. This explosion was such a tragedy. Secretary Elizabeth Creamer read the minutes from the last meeting, and Treasurer Jo Ann Wilcox gave the financial report. Both were accepted as presented. Sunshine Person Paula Hall reported on sending a thinking of you card to Sharron Connelly. Sharron accidentally ran over her dog and the poor little thing had to have surgery. She believes he is going to be all right. It was nice to have Lucille Kret back after a few month’s absence, and she reported Linda is still not doing well. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her. Libbie reported Camille Bolcer wasn’t able to attend the meeting this month, Gerry Kortokrax has moved to Houston, and Elsie Anders is either still in the hospital or in a rehab facility. Get well wishes go out to her. We miss you, Elsie. The July dining out social was discussed, and everyone was asked to think of a place we could go out to eat. Golden Corral and Furr’s were mentioned, and someone will check on costs. President Betty stated $75 cash was received for the St. Thomas Food Pantry plus a lot of food items. Everyone was thanked for their contributions. Betty also acknowledged photos in the Vestnik of Anna Johnson and Lydia Alholm as being honored by friends from SPJST and Sokol for their longtime membership and many contributions made by them to these organizations. went out to May celebrants Paula Arsenault and Anna Johnson. May you each have many more. Hostesses of Alicia Castillo, Sharron Connelly, and Marie Keller were thanked for their splendid job along with Lola Taylor and Rose Ann Spann for the decorations. Door prizes were donated by Lydia Alholm, Paula Arsenault, Lorraine Cross, Mary Schneider, Helen Skrasek, and Rose Ann Spann. We had lots of happy winners as the table decorations were also given away. Winners of the 50/50 dollar games were John G (don’t know who he is, but Betty said he was passing through and she asked him to play), and Margaret Sears was the winner of the second drawing. Following the meeting, grace was said, a great fried chicken lunch was enjoyed, and games were played. A good time was had by all.
News Jill Parker, the late Rosie Steinman’s granddaughter, ran in the Nike’s Women Marathon in Washington, D.C. She didn’t run in the Boston Marathon, but she did have a couple of friends who did, but they were not hurt. Now, Jill will be traveling to China with her running friends where they will run the Great Wall of China. Jill said she has done this twice so she will just watch this time. Anna Johnson enjoyed attending the First Communion of her two greatgrandsons at St. Michael’s Church in Bedord. She was sorry to miss her great-granddaughter’s First Communion in Austin as it was on the same day. Lydia Alholm continues to make her monthly trips to WinStar, and it seems like each month, she wins more than the month before. Wouldn’t it be nice if we all could be so lucky! I spoke with Betty Landsfeld the other day, and she is so excited about the first time ever Liska family reunion which will be held at Weimar, Texas. This will be a three-day affair with Liskas coming from all over the United States. Betty was told her job will be to bake the strudel. I asked if she was able to do this. She answered, that she is “baking” the strudel, not “making” the strudel, and that she told them if they put her a chair next to the oven, she can do it. Helen Skrasek returned home Monday afternoon from a trip to Tennessee, by way of Oklahoma, where she and son Ron and his wife attended the eighth grade graduation of Helen’s great-granddaughter. They flew back from Tennessee to Oklahoma City, and
Helen boarded the Amtrak for Fort Worth. She said when she got on the train and while going through Moore, she was thinking what a beautiful day it was and how nice everything looked. When she got home, she learned of the tornado and after turning on the television, she couldn’t believe what happened to the town of Moore. How terrible and sad. Sister Frances celebrated her 60th Jubilee at mass on Sunday at Saint Andrew’s Catholic Church where she renewed her vows. Sister Frances and Sister Maggie are known as the “baseball nuns” and have been seen on television many times during the Rangers’ games as the cameraman knows where their seats are. An anonymous donor always gives them two tickets to all the home games, and they were even invited to ride the Rangers’ plane to some out of town games over the years. Sister Maggie is not well and doesn’t go to the games anymore, and Sister Frances doesn’t drive anymore, but she still goes to the games. At the Knights of Columbus breakfast/reception after mass, I ran into John and Martha Pelzel (I originally met them at a Czech language class at SPJST Lodge 92) and in visiting with them, they introduced me to their daughter, Theresa, who has a beautiful voice and leads the congregation in singing many Sundays. In visiting with Theresa, I learned that she takes Sister Frances to a lot of the games and said how much she enjoys them, and even went to two World Series games. Sister Frances also gets a special parking place. John and Martha Pelzel came to Saint Andrew’s mass to hear Theresa sing and to honor Sister Frances as they also know her. The next meeting will be June 5. See you there. So Until, Keep Smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

Lodge 181, Conroe Joins Greater Conroe/Lake Conroe Area Chamber
Remove Wax from Carpeting Place a paper towel over the stain and draw the wax up into it by placing a warm iron over the paper towel (this is called “capillary action”); repeat if necessary. Sponge the stained area with 1 cup isopropyl alcohol and 2 to 3 cups water if the stain remains. Sponge from the outside to the inside of the stain. Be very sure not to get the area too wet or you can bring up a stain from the padding. Remove Candle Wax from Furniture Turn stained furniture upside down. Put a piece of cotton cloth (tee-shirt) over the wax stain. Using a hot chrome or metal finish curling iron, heat wax and let it melt into the cloth. This may take several applications to fully remove the wax.
Remove Candle Wax on Material Remove the excess the best you can. This is best done by putting an ice cube on the wax to harden it, then peeling or scraping off the excess wax.
1/4 cup electric dishwasher detergent 1/4 cup bleach 1/2 - 1 bucket warm water
Soak until stain disappears and launder as usual. Note: DO NOT use chlorinated bleach. Perspiration Stains 2 tablespoons cream of tartar per gallon of water. Soak until stain disappears then launder as usual.
SPJST Lodge 181, Conroe members, officers, and guests are joined by Greater Conroe/Lake Conroe Area Chamber of Commerce members and staff at the ribbon-cutting ceremony held May 13, 2013, celebrating Lodge 181’s membership in the Chamber.
Then place an absorbent piece of paper underneath, such as a brown paper bag. Put a white paper towel on top. Place a warm (not hot) iron on top over the paper towel and it should draw the wax up to the towel.
Remove Candle Wax from Candleholders Put candle holders in the freezer til
wax is frozen. Chip the wax off. Or, put holders under very hot water and wipe wax off.

Musical entertainment included Mike Middleton and Clayton Capps, Chris Rybak, and Amya Rodriguez. A kolache eating contest, Miss Texas, beseda

District Two Youth Leaders Share Weekend of Training
Dear Vestnik Readers, District Two Youth Leaders met for their annual district training in New Braunfels the weekend of April 20, 2013. Eleven of the 17 leaders and assistants were able to attend. It was a wonderful weekend of training, sharing ideas, planning camp, and discussing Youth Achievement Day. There was excellent input from each one in attendance. We were very honored to have District Two Director Jesse Pospisil and Linda join us bright and early on Saturday morning with breakfast. Thank you, Jesse, for your words of praise and encouragement. Thanks, Linda, for the breakfast. We somehow figured out you were the “chef.” Good job! As a district, we wanted to do something for the community. West,
Texas, is very special to us. Our beseda costumes are made there by Maggie and, of course SPJST is involved in Westfest. We decided to “adopt” two families that were affected by the terrible disaster in West. Several youth leaders donated their monies from Join Hands Day, and along with funds from the District Two Youth Fund, a donation was made directly to these families to help in whatever way needed. We also discussed a project for SPJST Education and Nature Center in Cooper Farm. To stay in touch throughout the year, several leaders are participating in “Secret Sister.” We did this many years ago, and it was enjoyed by all. Leaders, don’t forget your sisters. They are expecting to hear from you.

Earn Some Volunteer Hours This Summer! The Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center has announced a new program to provide a new learning opportunity for our youth, the Junior Docent program. This program is designed for boys and girls ages 14 to 18. A Junior Docent will receive training on greeting visitors, assisting with curating and curating maintenance, and how to give guided tours. You will also have an opportunity to learn how the museum preserves the history of our ancestors through artifacts, photographs, textiles, books, music, and much more. And, by the way — in case you were wondering — the word “docent” means a person who acts as a knowledgeable guide in a museum. It’s derived from the German word “dozent,” which translated means “to teach.” Cool! This volunteer program will begin in June and continue through the summer. Young people interested in the Junior Docent program will need to commit to volunteer for six hours once
a week. These hours can also be used towards your Czech heritage merit points. What’s more—this program will provide you with invaluable community service that could be included on applications for college, honor societies, awards, scholarships, or future employment. For more information or if you are interested in applying for the program, please call the museum at (254) 899-2935. I have also included a letter to send home with interested youth members and their parents. You do not have to be a youth club member to apply.
Czech Feszt For Kids Summer Day Camp! The Czech Heritage Museum will be hosting a summer day camp starting on June 17 and ending on June 20 from 8 a.m to 1 p.m at the Czech Heritage Museum. The cost is $65 per camper, and the museum would like to have this paid by June 10. During the summer camp, participants can expect to learn a little about Czech food, culture, history, language, and music.

Congratulations, OneAct Play 2A State Champion Rogers High School!
Wow! What a blessing! This year, Rogers OneAct Play is a state champion again! Last year, when we won state, I was on crew backstage, and this year, I had the honor to be on stage. Rogers was the first school in UIL history to receive straight ones at the state level. And, this year again, we received straight ones! What a way to end my senior year! At graduation, I will be wearing five proud medals! I am also a part of National Honor Society for three years now, graduating with honors, and in the top 10 percent of the class! Wow! How God has blessed me in my high school years. With high school and State King reign coming to a close, I’m going to miss doing and being a part of a lot of things. I have been told these past two years, “It’s not about the winning and all the medals, it’s about the memories that were created.” So my advice, don’t miss any opportunities!! The Society shares a deep personal and cultural attachment to the City of West and its legions of SPJST members, families, and friends. A loss of this magnitude bares our collective souls and brings us together as a community and a nation. We remain in touch with our members in and around West, monitoring the events as they unfold and providing assistance and support where it is needed. Please know that a committee consisting of the presidents of the four West-area SPJST lodges has been charged with the responsibility of evaluating local needs and submitting requests to the SPJST Home Office for the disbursement of funds contributed to the West Benevolence Fund. Also, know that we will be periodically posting the names of contributors to the West Benevolence Fund in the Vestnik. Updates will also be provided on projects funded through the West Benevolence Fund. Thank you for your kindness and generous support to those in need in West, Texas.
