Benevolence
July 20 Gala to Benefit West Community
O n Wednesday, April 17, a massive
fertilizer explosion rocked the Central Texas city of West. Six weeks have passed and, as expected, the media fanfare has subsided. Even so, dozens of homes near the plant remain vacant or have boarded-up windows as families work to repair the damage caused by the explosion that sprayed debris as far as two-and-a-half miles away from the plant. The blast destroyed 150 homes and buildings, injured 200 people, and killed 15, including 12 first responders who were working to put out the fire. The West Benevolence Fund was established by SPJST on the day after the explosion. Initial response — pri-

marily, from SPJST members and lodges — has been gratifying. To date, more than $26,000 has been received. A committee consisting of the presidents of the four West-area SPJST lodges has been working to identify projects needing attention and submitting requests to the SPJST Home Office for the disbursement of funds contributed to the West Benevolence Fund. The first check issued was in the amount of $3,937 and was presented to West Sokol to enable the gymnastics club to purchase needed equipment that was lost when their building was destroyed. Helping our family
he Home Office Staff is a very close family. I have interviewed several staff members throughout the years, and I usually ask what the best part of working at the Home Office is. The common answer among most staff members is “because we are a big family.” And, when something happens to one of our family members, we must step up and pitch in to do what we can to help . . . Home Office staff members are planning a fundraiser for New Business/Certificate Issue Technician Lori (Coots) Slack and her husband Danny. Danny was seriously injured in an automobile accident on May 14. Danny and Lori are expecting their third child in June, and they are also the parents of two young daughters. Danny’s medical expenses are significant, and this young family needs our help with alleviating some of these expenses. Home Office personnel will prepare and host a spaghetti lunch on Friday, July 12 at the Home Office, located at 520 North Main Street in Temple. A meal of spaghetti and meat sauce, bread, salad, dessert, and bottled water will be available for $5 per plate. We will soon begin taking pre-sale orders for lunches, and plates will be available for drive-thru pick-up. We are also collecting prizes for a drawing. If you have an item that you wish to donate, please contact Underwriter Doni Powell or any Home Office staff member. If you would like the donation listed on the tickets, please contact us by Monday, June 10. Watch for details soon on how to order your spaghetti lunch plates and/or how to assist with the lunch.

Polka Paw-ty at Lodge 88, Houston Be sure to Czech out the very creative ad of a polka-ing puppy and kitty on page 21! Theresa Cernoch Parker of Lodge 88, Houston and polkabeat.com, along with A SMART Rescue and Cleo the Cat are partnering to host the first ever Polka Paw-ty to benefit homeless animals on June 29 at Lodge 88. Theresa sends out a weekly email with a lineup of polka dances around the state. You can subscribe at www.polkabeat.com. Here is last week’s “weekly laugh,” submitted to polkabeat.com by Ben Sustr of Schulenburg. An elderly woman was arrested for shoplifting in a supermarket. When she went before the judge, he asked her, “What did you steal?” She answered, “A can of peaches.” The judge asked the woman why she had stolen the can of peaches, and she replied that she was hungry. “How many peaches were in the can?” the judge asked. “Six,” she replied. “Then, I’ll give you six days in jail,” the judge said. The woman’s husband suddenly stood and asked the judge if he could say something. “What is it?” asked the judge. “She also stole a can of peas.” —SPJST—

Lodge 24, Cyclone members express thanks
Wow! What a day! We, Wilbert and Margaret, want to thank everyone who came out to enjoy Mother’s Day with us at Lodge 24, Cyclone. You are who make this day so special. We had such good help again this year, and thanks to all our friends who again came through with delicious desserts. Thanks to the guys at the pits. Wilbert is so grateful that all of you were so good and patient with us. I want to say how much I appreciate all of you who again came and served at plates-to-go and also the line inside. It is so nice to have a friendly line of ladies to meet the great public. What a treat to be greeted with a big smile! I love each and every one of you. Thanks!
To the members of the other lodges who showed up to help—from Temple, Taylor, Morgan’s Point, and Bruceville-Eddy . . . how great it is to have your support. Thanks to the youth mothers who took care of the desserts. You are the best. I am sorry if I didn’t get to visit with any of you as you could see we were pretty busy! Thanks to you who came by the kitchen, and said, “You all did it again . . . the best meal ever.” Thank you, Margaret and Wilbert Mikeska —SPJST—

order with a good quorum present. After opening ceremonies and grace given by Lodge Vice President Glenn Kaminsky, a recess was taken for the lunch which was barbecue chicken plates obtained from the East Bernard Little League Fundraiser. As always, the chicken was very well prepared to the point the meat fell off of the bones. Everything in the meal was first class. These people do a very good job every time. After everyone had sufficient time to eat, the meeting reconvened, minutes read, treasurer’s report given with both being approved as read. At this point, District Six Director Karen Kaspar was asked to speak whereby she congratulated the pin recipients and made a very brief comment on sales progress in the district. Now, it was time to turn the floor over to Supreme Lodge SecretaryTreasurer Leonard Mikeska who read several items about events taking place 75 years ago and 50 years ago. The names of our recipients were read. The recipients for 75-year pins were Rosalie Miculek and Norman Novosad. The 50-year pin recipients were Beverly Fry and Russell Graves. None of the recipients were present, but one had a relative present to receive the pin. Russel Graves’ mother Pauline “Pollie” Graves (also a longtime 50-year member) received his pin from SL Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska. In addition, “Pollie” Graves also was celebrating her 80th birthday this day, and the appropriate salutations were given by the membership.

Also, a special thanks goes to Lodge Secretary Helen Kelner and Treasurer A.J. “Tony” Kelner for bringing the sign for the pin presentation, dessert, potted plants, etc. Thanks also to Helen and Rudy Vrana along with Lionell Pastor. If someone’s name was missed, you, too, are thanked even more. Now to the Join Hands Day project: money and help was given to Beasley Cub Scout Pack to put stepping stones around and to the flag pole along with planting flowers around in the same area. Lodge 28 representatives were Secretary Helen Kelner, Treasurer A.J. “Tony” Kelner, Anthony J. Kelner, and Jessica Kelner. One of the Cub Scouts was our young member Wyatt Ohl who sent some small United States flags to our meeting so they could be given to the veterans present in commemoration of Memorial Day. He could not attend the meeting himself because his mom Jessica Kelner was sick. Thank you, Wyatt, for the
thought. By the way, this writer had the pleasure of bringing some freshly ground coffee and making it. I hope those who chose to drink it, enjoyed it. Also brought were some other items, too. To the faithful: Hope you mark your calendars, plan to attend on the 9th, and this writer remains . . . Fraternally yours, Joseph D. Nezval, FIC President —SPJST—

Lodge 84, Dallas; Foresters; Build-A-Bear Center host heart ceremony, build bears for Children’s Medical Center
This year, Lodge 84, Dallas was very lucky to join hands with two other groups from the community: Foresters and Build-A-Bear Center from Northpark. Our day on May 4, 2013, began at Lodge 84 with coffee, milk, and juice, and none other than Aunt Bessie’s warm strudel and kolaches. We then started on our project. First, we picked up a handful of hearts, and the heart ceremony began. We
held the hearts in our hands to warm them. By shaking them, the hearts get started. Rub your hand on your arm to wish them luck. Rub them on your side to give them laughter. Put them to your ear so they can hear your wishes. Kiss them in your hand so they can feel your love. And finally, say a prayer. After the heart ceremony, we placed the hearts inside the teddy bears and sewed the backs closed. We also put different kinds of clothes on
the bears. As you can see from the pictures, these bears are adorable. We made 165 bears that we donated to Children’s Medical Center of Dallas. These bears are given to children in the hospital to comfort and ease their fears. I would like to thank everyone who made this all possible: Lyn Olds who was our contact to Foresters, Build-ABear Center of Dallas, and Lodge 84.
This was such a great success not only for the children receiving the bears, but Lodge 84 as well. By reaching out and working with Foresters, we found out how much we had in common. We are proud to say that we are already planning our next community project together. Thanks again to all who came out and supported us. Vicki Sims First Vice President/FAC —SPJST—

is still under the weather. Revisiting unfinished business, the topic of a trip was discussed with enthusiasm. The dates decided upon were either June 20 or June 27, and Lone Star Park was set for the destination. We had 18 members sign up to go even though they don’t know specifics for sure. President Marlene will get details for the trip to Lone Star Park, and she will also get more info on WinStar travel. If you were unable to be at the meeting, please call Marlene to let her know if you are interested in going. The kitchen crew for this day was Joy Booe, Norma McLendon, Wilma Perry, and Sandi Celusniak. Thanks to them for their work setting up the wonderful lunch. Good stuff was brought by all, and one of my favorites—carrot salad was awesome. That wonderful little lady, Hermina Cihacek, was the owner of the dish; and hopefully, she’ll bring the recipe to us soon. There were a lot of babies born in May some years ago. They were Corina Cranfill, Sunny Kercho, Hermina Cihacek, Doris Overstreet, Magda Kronenberger, and Dedi Soares. “Happy Birthday” was sung to all and then . . . there was a surprise. Because this was a once in a lifetime birthday for Hermina, she was presented with a special birthday cake. She is 98 years

There were 12 in all and some very pleased members who received “just what they needed and wanted.” The ladies of the Circle are certainly a generous bunch, and we can always count on them to share their bounty. Gloria Farek was recog-

She’s one lucky lady because she won the basket last month as well. Another ‘wow’ moment! Betty Loyd gave a shout out to our retired nurses in the group. This is the
one week in the year that nurses are officially honored: National Nurses Recognition Week. We are so thankful for those who go above and beyond in care to others in need. We could not do without them. What you wanna bet that they’ll get extra stars in their crowns for their service to mankind. Sherrie Watkins reported on hall activities. She shared that the hall popcorn machine had been repaired and is in great working order. It’s fast, and they are thrilled to have it back in operation. She also stated that on the first Sunday of each month, a country western dance is held and the first Friday of each month is set aside for ballroom dancing. The Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center, located at 119 West French Avenue in Temple, Texas, announces a new program to provide a new learning opportunity for youth— the Junior Docent program. Are you interested in how your grandparents immigrated to Texas, how they survived the voyage to Texas, and how they lived once they made it here? A concert was held to honor those firefighters and first responders who lost their lives and to recognize the survivors of the West, Texas, fire and explosion tragedy on Wednesday, April 17, 2013. The Czech Center Museum Houston presented Kingwood Chorale Czech it out! It was great music from Dvorak and his Countrymen on Thursday, May 9 in Prague Hall. Proceeds from this event were a memorial fund collection for the town of West. The history of America and its music intersects greatly with that of the Czech Republic. That is especially true in Texas communities, where so many towns in the state were founded by Czech immigrants. The Kingwood Chorale celebrated Czech music with a concert of choral and instrumental music from Antonin Dvorak and his fellow countrymen. “This is beautiful, rich, and exciting music,” said artistic director and conductor Todd Miller. “Czech music really came alive in the Romantic Period of the late 19th Century and the concert is filled with music from that time.” The signature piece was Dvorak’s Te Deum (sung in Latin), which the composer wrote in the 1890s while living in New York City. “Many people don’t know that Dvorak lived in America for several years after he became famous and is partially responsible for encouraging American composers to utilize African-American Spirituals, hymns, and other indigenous folk music in developing a serious national sound,” said Miller. “We

owe Dvorak a debt of gratitude for helping America embrace its own music.” The concert also featured music of Smetana, Janacek, Fibich, and Suk. Though most of the concert was in English, the chorale took its first opportunity at singing in Czech with two short works. Guest soloists were soprano Nancy Curtis and bari-tenor Jon Janacek. At this festive concert, held at The Czech Center Museum Houston in the Museum District, member of the West, Texas community and the CCMH, Honorary Consul General of the Czech Republic for the State of Texas Raymond J. Snokhous presented words of welcome, and he and his wife Clarice spoke with emotion of their first-hand experience following the disaster. Proceeds for this continuing Memorial Fund will be managed in cooperation with Mr. Snokhous who will designate an agent for the use of the collected funds. Hors d’oeuvres, wine and beer reception followed the concert together with a silent auction.
Charles Ota Heller Visits Czech-born American author Charles Ota Heller visited Saturday May 4 to converse with those who took the opportunity to discuss with the author and have their book Prague: My Long Journey Home signed. The book a memoir of survival, denial and redemption of his early years in Prague in a large Catholic and Jewish family, describes the feeling of the oppression and brutality of the Nazi occupation in
his beloved Czechoslovakia; World War II and the ensuing subjugation of the regime under communism, eventually leading to the loss of twenty-five members of his Heller and Neumann family. The book is the history of Czechoslovakia that fills in all the empty spaces we Americans never really knew or believed. It is a spellbinding read. You may continue to order the book from Prague International Gifts. Another must read new book Rustic Baroque by Czech author Jiri Hajicek, Ceske Budejovice, living in Czechoslovakia through 42 years of communism, loss of people, personal freedom and property is also available in our Prague International Gifts Shop. It is another invaluable read documenting what happened to freedom, rights, properties and especially the missing people. The translator has annotated the novel to enhance English-language readers’ appreciation for Czech life and culture. Rustic Baroque makes for an excellent study for those who are learning Czech or for Czech speakers wishing to improve their English. Order your book or books early as it will be highly desired for genealogy purposes and history lovers for authentic history formerly unknown. Visiting Czech Republic (Moravia) in May. Visitors are treated to blooming flowers and fruit trees, temperate climate, people planting gardens, working their vineyards, bottling last fall’s grape harvest, receiving last year’s wine awards, fresh vegetables, and

May Fetes galore. For their Hody up to 20 men raise the central village May pole, usually three trees stripped of their bark, connected, about 150 high crowned with banners and streamers. During the night before, village boys erect smaller May poles in front of their favorite girlfriend’s home usually just one. Two trees convey to the girl of the house there are two rivals and even sometime three May poles!
