Celebrate Our Flag
Celebrated every June 14 in the USA, millions of Americans observe
Flag Day by waving Old Glory outside their homes and businesses. Veteran’s groups, fraternals, and sometimes whole communities also arrange civic functions and special ceremonies in honor of Flag Day. This year, millions of Americans from coast to coast will celebrate Flag Day on Friday, June 14, 2013. As the legend goes, it was George Washington and two other members of the Continental Congress who asked Betsy Ross to sew the first American flag sometime in the late spring of 1776. The young widow was only in her early 20s when she completed the first flag with 13 stars arranged in a circle. A year later, the Continental Congress officially adopted the design for the national flag, and henceforward the Stars and Stripes symbolized the U.S. around the world. The first Flag Day was celebrated in 1877 - the flag’s centennial. In 1916, a grass roots movement resulted in President Woodrow Wilson issuing a proclamation that called for a nationwide observance of Flag Day on June 14. Although still not an official holiday, Flag Day was made a permanent observance in America in 1949 by Congress who resolved “That the 14th day of June of each year is hereby designated as Flag Day.” —Source: Chiff.com
Flag Day Ceremony in Temple SPJST will sponsor a Flag Day observance at William R. Courtney Texas State Veterans Home, located at 1424 Martin Luther King, Jr. Lane in Temple, this Friday, June 14 at 10 a.m. The Courtney Home is on the campus of the VA Hospital. The
program will include patriotic music; posting of colors by Boy Scouts, Chisolm Trail Districts - Temple, Belton, and Salado; Pledge of Allegiance led by Sue Nelson, on-site representative for Texas Veterans Land Board at William R. Courtney Texas State Veterans Home; National Anthem by Ruth Hanusch of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton; Flag Day proclamation by Temple Mayor Pro Tem Judy Morales; youth club winning Flag Day essay announcement; and Flag Day message by Dan Corbin, State Commander of the American Legion of the State of Texas and Killeen Mayor. Refreshments will be served following the program, and everyone is invited to attend.
Flag Day Fun Facts Why red, white, and blue? To the original members of the Continental Congress, red stood for hardiness and courage, white for purity and innocence, and blue for vigilance and justice. Why 13 stars and stripes? They represented the 13 American colonies which rallied around the new flag in their fight against the British for self-governance. The 13 colonies included Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Virginia. To this day, 13 stripes still commemorate the original colonies. Instead of 13 stars, today the number of stars on the United States flag has grown to 50, representing every state in the Union. —Source: Chiff.com —SPJST—

Thank you for selecting me as a recipient of the Leadership Grant. I plan to use the money to help pay for books and tuition at Savannah College of Art and Design as I study for a degree in photography. I am very excited about the next four years, but am also aware of the financial burden of attending an out-of-state school. I am very grateful to have received this grant. West Gala set for July 20 at Lodge 47 Seaton
On Wednesday, April 17, a massive fertilizer explosion rocked the Central Texas city of West. Six weeks have passed and, as expected, the media fanfare has subsided. Even so, dozens of homes near the plant remain vacant or have boarded-up windows as families work to repair the damage caused by the explosion that sprayed debris as far as two-and-a-half miles away from the plant. The blast destroyed 150 homes and buildings, injured 200 people, and killed 15, including 12 first responders who were working to put out the fire. The West Benevolence Fund was established by SPJST on the day after the explosion. Initial response — primarily, from SPJST members and lodges — has been gratifying. To date, more than $30,000 has been received. A committee consisting of the presidents

Lodge 97, Placedo joins hands with Hospice of South Texas
Lodge 97, Placedo had a great time participating in Join Hands Day with Advancement Coordinator Gayla Whitaker and Hospice of South Texas on May 4, 2013, at 9:30 a.m. The location of the organization is 605 East Locust Street in Victoria, Texas. Donna Vanek brought breakfast items including doughnuts, coffee, and
juice. Attending the Join Hands Day event were Gay Revel, Marvin Tomas, Shelton Bluhm, Silvia Bluhm, Donna Vanek, Dawn Dierliam, Judy Bellanger, Jeanette Harabins, and Diana Redd. Activities included making cards for the patients, decorating gift boxes that
will be filled with items for the patients to use, and making decorations for the upcoming parade. These decorations will be used for the car that will be in the parade in Victoria. While we were working on the projects, two of the RNs—Rusty Wall and Lisa Wolter—came by. We also enjoyed admiring the hand-
crocheted and knitted blankets that volunteers had made. The blankets were very soft and colorful. The organization always needs new handmade blankets, and I know they are appreciated by the patients. Submitted by, Diana Redd, Reporter —SPJST—

Lodge 130, Dallas: SoupMobile - An Unsung Hero in West
Lodge 130, Dallas has been a strong supporter of the SoupMobile for the last several years donating more than $8,200 and providing volunteers. Well, the old saying “what goes around comes around” is true. See what came back around . . . and we did not even have to ask for it. They just simply came. They saw the need, and they came. April 17, 2013, will be a day that will long live in the memories of all Texans. The Texas city of West was hit by a massive fertilizer plant explosion. An explosion of such intensity that homes and businesses were destroyed in the blink of an eye. The city’s infrastructure took a huge hit. Most devastating were the lives lost in the blast. Fourteen people are known to have lost their lives. Countless others suffered injuries. In a town of 2,800 residents, it was a miracle that more lives were not lost. Parts of the town were literally leveled. The SoupMobile’s main missions are feeding and sheltering the homeless. However, in 2011, the SoupMobile formed an Emergency Response Team. Its purpose was to respond to natural and man-made disasters in Texas. Since its formation, we have responded to a whole host of emergencies including apartment fires, tornadoes in Lancaster, and now most recently, the disaster in West. Since the explosion, the SoupMobile has delivered more than four tons of food, blankets, and supplies to West. Then on Monday, April 29, we did something very special for the city of West. The SoupMobile Emergency Response Team set up camp in a Chevron gas station in West. We gave out $10,000 of gas money to pump free gas in the cars of 500 West residents, volunteers, and first responders. As a special act of kindness, we also washed the windshields of every car that received gas. The response was over-

More telling were the tears in their eyes and the smiles on the faces of the West residents as they received their free gas and sparkling clean windshields. Hearts were touched as we blessed the residents with the love of Jesus. We believe that if Jesus were walking the earth today, He would have been right there pumping gas and washing windshields. CBS DFW Channel 11 also made the trip down to cover the free gas event. From www.kwkt.com Lauren Holman, Reporter Friday, May 31, 2013
BRYAN, TX (KYLE) — It was a homecoming fit for two local heroes. Bryan’s streets were lined as injured firefighters, Ricky Mantey and Mitch Moran, made their journey home. “We’ve watched the pain that they’ve endured, the pain their families have endured and to see them come home is the most incredible thing for all of us,” said Fire Chief Randy McGregor. After spending four months in the Galveston, Mantey and Moran finally got to finish the shift they started. Friday afternoon (May 31, 2013) the two were brought back to Bryan in Engine No. 5, the same truck they rode on to respond to that February fire. “Wow! Engine 5 brought me home today! I left in it and came home in it and let me tell you how blessed I am to be apart of an organization that cares so much about their own,” Mantey said. It was an emotional homecoming since the department still mourns the loss of their fallen brothers but a return home that everyone has anxiously been waiting for. Crown on the occasion of his Czech King coronation in 1346. The same year, the Pope gave a Papal Bull to protect the crown. The Bull prohibits the crown alienate, to sell, or to pledge the crown. The crown is in the form of gold headbands, consisting of four parts. Each part has a top shaped like a lily flower. Headband is made of gold with 22 carats purity. The crown is set with gems and pearls: 19 corundum, 30 quartz, 44 rubies, 1 mica, 1 pyrite, 1 aquamarine and 20 pearls. In a cross on top is apparently inserted a thorn from the crown of Jesus Christ. The crown weighs more than 2.5 kilograms and has a height and diameter of 19 cm. Karel IV also participated in the drafting of the Order of the crowning of the King and the Queen. The scepter was created 1527 and is made up of eighteen carat gold. It has a length of 67 cm and weighs 1013 grams. It is decorated with iron pyrites, rubies and quartz. Extra large spinel is set on the top of the scepter. The royal orb was created in the same year as the scepter and it is also decorated with precious stones and pearls. The coronation cloak was made for the coronation of Ferdinand II, the Czech King in 1617. The cloak is made of precious silk material of red color and it is

bordered with an ermine. The coronation cross is a relics’ cross, because they are inserted into relics of The Christ Martyrdom are inserted (e.g. a thorn) in it. It was made after 1354. St. Wenceslas’ sword was probably made contemporary with St. Wenceslas’ crown. Crown jewels are stored in the Crown Chamber safe in the St. Vitus Cathedral at the Prague Castle. The entrance doors to the chamber have 7 locks. Seven keys for these locks have in holding the most important representatives of secular and church power of CR state. The locks are unlocked only on special occasions, i.e. when the Crown Jewels are taken out of the Crown Chamber and displayed in a special showcase to the public. Jewels are possible to expose only in area of the Prague Castle and only after a decision of the State President. Jewels were exposed this year in the Vladislav’s Hall from May 10th until 19th 2013 on the occasion of the direct vote of Mr. Miloš Zeman for the CR President. Jewels viewed more than 30,000 visitors. Fraternally, Ivo. •••••
rubínů, 1 slídu, 1 pyrit, 1 akvamarín a 20 perel. Koruna váží víc než 2,5 kg a má výšku i průměr 19 cm. Má délku 67 cm a váží 1013 g. Víta a primátor hlavního města Prahy. S pozdravem Ivo. —SPJST—
Letters to Bibbie •
This article is one of a series of “Letters to Bibbie, ” written by Ivo Marek to his distant relative Vickie (Bibbie) Cooper of Granger, Texas. Ivo and his parents live in Choceň, Czech Republic. Ivo is an engineer by profession and an accomplished weaver and textile artist. In addition, his hobbies are gardening, cooking, and fine-tuning his English.
Dear Bibbie, This day I will be brief with number of words in the text, because the theme “Floods in the Czech Republic” best expresses some photos that I send in the attachment. The nature most threats to people in the form of tornadoes on your continent America. Here at us in the middle of Europe in the last 15 years, floods are the biggest natural disasters. My parents say, that such large floods did not been for their life in Bohemia before now. The first big flood, what my parents remember, was in 1997. Another flood was in 2002 (in Prague was then, except others, underground railway Metro flooded), and the third great flood began this year in late May and continued until June 2013.
VӖSTNÍK
The cause of the floods is unusually intense and prolonged rain. Dams are not able longer hold much water, that is why rivers and creeks spilled out of its banks. Many cellars of houses, buildings, cars, roads, gardens, meadows, and fields were flooded with water. Train tracks flooded with water in the town Kolín. Citizens built flood barriers in Prague and in other cities. In Prague did not run trains of the underground railway Metro and cars’ driveways banned into some streets. High school students in Prague due to the floods received free and did not go to the school. Clients were evacuated from some retirement homes and from some hospitals. Fire brigade, policemen, and rescuers are working nonstop. Soldiers were called to against-flood and cleaning services. Czech television broadcast continuously flood news, reports, and film footage. To this day I know, that this year’s floods have killed 6 people and

5 people are missing. It will take a long time than will be done repairs and replacements of floods destroyed property, and it will cost a lot of money. So to the economic crisis in the Czech Republic was added natural crisis, i.e. flood one. See the attached photos of the floods in the Czech Republic. With kind regards, Ivo •••••
Statue in water.
Studenti středních škol v Praze z důvodu povodně dostali volno a nešli do školy. Byli evakuováni klienti z některých domovů důchodců a pacienti z některých nemocnic. Ve dne v noci pracovali hasiči, policisté a záchranáři. Do protipovodňových a úklidových prací byli povoláni i vojáci. Česká televize vysílala nepřetržitě povodňové zprávy, reportáže a filmové záběry.

Bude trvat dlouho, než budou udělány opravy a náhrady povodní zničeného majetku, a bude to stát hodně peněz. Takže ke krizi ekonomické přibyla v ČR i krize přírodní tj. povodňová. S pozdravem Ivo —SPJST—
