Editor’s Note

VӖSTNÍK

Welcome to the Home Office!

It’s always a great day at the SPJST Home Office . . . but it is es-

pecially great when we have visitors from our lodges and youth clubs. Last week, Danny, April, and Misty Dvorak of Lodge 25, Ennis stopped by while wife/mom Jennifer was attending a class in Temple. It was great to see them. I’m sure April and Misty will be writing letters to the Vestnik real soon and hopefully, April will include a picture of her new beautiful Czech kroj : )

Youth Achievement Days Begin District Youth Achievement Days begin this Sunday, June 23 with the year’s first YAD in District Three. Lodge 154, Fort Worth will host the event. I love attending YADs and seeing all of the craft projects, watching the individual and group talents, and listening to the king and queen speeches. Best wishes to each and every youth who is participating in an SPJST District Youth Achievement Day this year. You are all winners because you are participating! And, members across the state, please attend your district’s YAD and support our young people. If you need more information about your

district’s YAD, contact the District Youth Counselor listed on page 2 of each week’s Vestnik.

Early Vestnik Deadline Tuesday, July 2 at 12 noon Please make a note of an upcoming early Vestnik deadline. Due to the Fourth of July holiday, the deadline for the July 10 Vestnik will be Tuesday, July 2 at 12 noon. Please note this, and send your items for the July 10 Vestnik in early.

Duplicate Vestniks Calls sometimes come in from members saying that they are receiving multiple Vestniks in their mailbox each week. We do our best to send each household only one copy; however, sometimes household names are duplicated on the mailing list. We are in the process of revising the current Vestnik subscriber list to remove duplicate copies to a household. If your name is removed, but you still wish to receive multiple copies, please let us know and we will add your name back to the subscriber list. Please send us an email or contact Sharla or Dorothy in the Financial Secretary’s Department. —SPJST— Thanks to Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club members and Vestnik correspondents Misty, left, and April Dvorak for stopping by the Home Office last week. We had a great visit!

The meeting of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts was called to order by President Douglas Williams at 5 p.m. on Monday, June 10, 2013. President Williams asked one of our guests Linda Pospisil to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a moment of silence in memory of our departed members. All officers were present. We had a nice group for the meeting. We were so honored to have as guests District Two Director Jesse Pospisil and wife Linda and Honorary District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky and LaVerne Vanicek. President Williams greeted everyone and thanked all for attending. We are always so excited to fill some of these vacant seats with members and guests. As the saying goes, the more the merrier. We had a very nice meeting and get-together. We were so honored to help celebrate Linda and Jesse’s 46th anniversary which was on this very day. We congratulate them, and hope they have many more happy years together. The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were read and approved. The Cotton Festival was held in Buckholts the first Saturday in June as well as the class reunion which was held here at the hall. They had a great turnout this year. It was the best turnout in five years. They thought this might be their last year depending on this year’s attendance so now they are planning to carry on. Everyone seemed to enjoy it. The barbecue dinner was very good, and everyone enjoyed visiting with old friends. We sold kolaches which made them happy as well. Thanks to Monty Williams for arranging and delivering the kolaches to us.

West Gala set for July 20 at Lodge 47 Seaton

On Wednesday, April 17, a massive fertilizer explosion rocked the Central Texas city of West. Six weeks have passed and, as expected, the media fanfare has subsided. Even so, dozens of homes near the plant remain vacant or have boarded-up windows as families work to repair the damage caused by the explosion that sprayed debris as far as two-and-a-half miles away from the plant. The blast destroyed 150 homes and buildings, injured 200 people, and killed 15, including 12 first responders who were working to put out the fire. The West Benevolence Fund was established by SPJST on the day after the explosion. Initial response — primarily, from SPJST members and lodges — has been gratifying. To date, more than $30,000 has been received. A committee consisting of the presidents of the four West-area SPJST lodges has been working to identify projects needing attention and submitting requests to the SPJST Home Office for the disbursement of funds contributed to the West Benevolence Fund. The first check issued was in the amount of $3,937 and was presented to West Sokol to enable the gymnastics club to purchase needed equipment that was lost when their building was destroyed.

Czechs honor American liberators

To think another country, has honored our United States Military for so many years . . . On May 4, 1945, General Patton gave the order to resume the offensive in West Bohemia. The 2nd and 97th Infantry Divisions and the 16th Armored Division pushed forward in the direction of Plzeň. American tanks appeared on the streets of the city from 8 a.m. on the morning of Sunday, May 6, to be greeted with immense enthusiasm by local inhabitants . . . The city of Plzeň (Pilsen), Czech Republic remains grateful to its American friends and allies for their heroic actions on May 6, 1945. Plzeň commemorates its liberation by the American Army during World War II during its annual Liberation Festival.

Plzeň, Czech Republic - For 45 years, the people of Plzeň (Pilsen), in the Czech Republic, were unable to express their gratitude to the American Soldiers who liberated their city from the Nazis on May 6, 1945. When the Iron Curtain was lifted in 1989, Plzeň has since then educated its citizens on the circumstances of their liberation - circumstances and details which were kept from them during Communist rule. So one of the first anniversaries Plzeň’s citizens chose to remember was that day - May 6, 1945 so many years ago. Since 1990, the city of Plzeň - the home of the famous Czech beer Pilsner Urquell - has organized the annual Liberation Festival taking place in May, which has become a local tradition, and has been attended by many

American and Allied veterans. The annual Plzeň Liberation Festival remains a source of great pride for this small city in western Czech Republic. “The fact that we are visited by American veterans is a great and unique opportunity for us. They came to a country they hardly knew. It was uncharted waters for them but they did not hesitate to put their lives at stake to bring us freedom,” said Plzeň’s mayor, Martin Baxa. While the event has its roots in 1945 when George Patton’s Third Army led the liberation of western Czechoslovakia, Plzeň city planners have added a modern day focus designed to impress upon young people the meaning of the liberation to them and their future as Czech citizens. One of the highlights of the festival is the procession of historic vehicles through the centre of the city, where the streets will be lined by thousands of enthusiastic fans. In addition to seeing veteran vehicles, commemorative events, exhibitions and concerts, the festival includes scenes from the everyday lives of common soldiers and the inhabitants of the Protectorate. Lovers of military history can also look forward to contemporary military camps with authentic equipment, exhibitions and concerts.

Young World War II enthusiasts can be seen throughout the downtown area dressed in period uniforms, both Czech and American. Many are teenagers who are able to connect the events of 1945 to their lives today. American veterans are the stars of the show in Plzeň. Several return annually to the place where they fought hard to liberate the people of Plzeň.

These soldiers of yesterday are advanced in years, but with memories of 1945 still intact. Former Lieutenant Earl Ingram has come back to Plzeň several times; he was a platoon leader during the war. When Ingram arrived in Plzeň, the shooting had stopped, and he “saw the happiest and most grateful people in my life.”

Czech Muzika - Texas Style. Please come to the opening reception on Thursday, June 20, 2013, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Czech Heritage Museum, located at 119 West French Avenue in Temple. Presentations will be by Patrick Sparks, president of Texas Dance Hall Preservation, Inc., and Alfred Vrazel of the Vrazels’ Polka Band and radio host of the Vrazel Polka Show on KMIL in Cameron, Texas. Music is the social life of the Czech people. Where two or more are gathered, you will find a community center or dance hall. These halls bring families together to celebrate occasions, to listen to their favorite bands, and most of all to dance their favorite many step . . . the polka. From the late 1800s to the present, there were many Czech bands and orchestras that played throughout Texas. Highlighted in this exhibit are stories and photos of Czech bands, instruments that made the melodies, and the phonographs that played the recordings at home. The Czech Heritage Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visit www.czechmuseum.org or call (254) 899-2935 for more information. —SPJST—

Ingram and his fellow veterans, wearing their veteran’s hats and hardearned medals, make the pilgrimage back to Plzeň to salute those they liberated and receive the thanks from a still-grateful Plzeň community now 68 years later. Mayor Baxa expressed the great level of community pride that endures in Plzeň and as an historian, he is also able to connect the events of 1945 to his city and country today. The Czech Republic is now a NATO ally and training partner with the United States forces stationed in Germany and a contributing nation to the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan.

“The United States Army has done a great deal to keep Europe safe. It did a big part in World Wars II and World War II. I am very happy that it continues its role as a guarantor of security and peace today,” said Baxa. The annual May celebration is one of the biggest events of the year for the people of Plzeň. It includes military displays, wreath layings, and a gala concert.
