Green rides to Nationals again By Marc Robertson Frio-Nueces Current Thursday, June 13, 2013
La Salle County native Tanner Green has qualified for a shot at the national championship in his final year as a member of the Junior High Rodeo Association and will travel to Gallup, New Mexico, later this month to compete in team roping. Green, a 14-year-old homeschooled student, is making his third trip to the nationals this year, and for the second time, he will go there with an arena record to put him in the qualifiers’ circle. In order to reach the national competition, Green qualified by winning top ranks at the region and state levels, each time finishing among the top riders in the state. In the spring of this year, Green switched his membership to Region 7 in Edna, Texas, and earned the championship as tiedown roper, ribbon roper, team roper and chute dogger, and the all-around cowboy award. He qualified to the state finals in first place in each of his events. In April, however, Green was dealt a potentially competition-ending blow when he suffered a broken elbow while riding bulls at the Texas Youth Rodeo Association event at Caldwell. Caught in a rope, Green was hanging perilously close to the bull, which kicked him in the head and then flung him to the ground, fracturing and displacing a piece of bone in his right elbow. A three-hour surgery later and with two pins in his arm, Green began a re-

Green’s championship records go back to his sixth grade year, when he became the Texas Junior High Rodeo

My heroes are veterans. They are sons, daughters, fathers, and mothers, Uncles, aunts, cousins, sisters, and brothers. United we will continue to stand, Because of these veterans who have fought for our land. We should all take our hats off, raise our hand and salute, It is to our soldiers that we must pay our tribute. Everyone should realize that freedom is not free, We so easily forget those who have kept that right for you and me. Without their sacrifice America would be lost, They were brave and strong no matter the cost. For some, freedom was the gift Weston is pictured that they unselfishly gave, after reading his essay But in the end, death was the price at the SPJST Flag Day observance in Temple. that they paid. Others were able to return to their homes, But were left to deal with bad memories all alone. We must always remember, we must never forget, It is the red, white, and blue that these men and women so proudly represent. —SPJST—

The law became effective immediately. The Sales Tax Holiday gives Texas shoppers a break from state and local sales taxes on most cloth-
ing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100. Shoppers can save up to $8.25 for every $100 they spend. Publication 98-490, Sales Tax Holiday/Tax-Free Weekend and Rule 3.365, Sales Tax Holiday - Clothing, Shoes and School Supplies tell you what you need to know.
Innocence is Priceless Thanks to Ronnie Rieger of Lodge 29, Taylor for sharing this sweet story: One Sunday morning, the pastor noticed little Alex standing in the foyer of the church staring up at a large plaque. It was covered with names and small American flags mounted on either side of it. The six-year old had been staring at the plaque for some time, so the pastor walked up, stood beside the little boy, and said quietly, “Good morning, Alex.” “Good morning, Pastor,” he replied, still focused on the plaque. “Pastor, what is this?” The pastor replied, “Well, son, it’s a memorial to all the young men and women who died in the service.” Soberly, they just stood together, staring at the large plaque. Finally, little Alex’s voice, barely audible and trembling with fear asked, “Which service, the 8:00 or the 9:30?” Heartfelt Sympathy We extend sincere and heartfelt sympathy to Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek and his family. Brian’s mother Willie Mae Vanicek passed away on Saturday, June 15 after a battle with Alzheimer’s. Her funeral service was held Wednesday, June 19 at Seaton Brethren Church. Mrs. Vanicek was an active member of Lodge 24, Cyclone and assisted with and participated in the lodge’s events for many years.

VӖSTNÍK From The Desk of Gay Revel SPJST Lodge 97, Placedo Sales Agent • • • My Success Story • • •
I’ve been working the orphan member list and have had very positive response from the members. Last night (June 14) was our Lodge 97, Placedo meeting, and the attendance was one of the highest for our second quarter meeting. I contribute the high attendance to the annual review program we are working on in our lodges. Many of our members have had no contact with an agent since the day they first bought their life certificates, are not sure who their beneficiaries are, how much insurance they have, or where their certificates are. They usually have lots of questions, too. When we leave a member’s home we’ve made a new friend and are thanked for coming by to see them. Everyone likes to be appreciated and to know that SPJST cares about them. Many members also just enjoy the visit with someone that has a common interest—and that’s SPJST. At our meeting we had people attend who have been longtime members, but have had no contact with any Lodge 97 member or agent in many years. We received “thank yous” for inviting them and were told that they enjoyed the meeting and the fellowship with other members. These members can also lead us to future members through friends and family referrals which also promote lodge growth. I think these members will attend the next meeting, but it’s time to follow up with more “orphan” members and bring them back into our lodge activities. This was possible by knowing my patience and having the training and skills to be able to make a split-second judgment and following through with it. I want to give a special thanks to Fraternal Field Manager Delisle Doherty for showing that this program can be successful. All agents in his districts should get him on an appointment with them. Fraternally, Gay Revel

The March minutes and treasurer’s report had been handed out to the members before the meeting. The minutes and treasurer’s report were reviewed and approved. Secretary Janie Bucek stated she received a letter from SPJST Home Office asking if our lodge was interested in hosting any of the four SPJST State Tournaments. Our lodge declined the offer. Charles Bucek gave the nursing home report. He stated the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home Directors are trying to purchase some land in Taylor, Texas, for future use. They plan to build a new nursing home on this land. After the new nursing home would be completed and the residents would be moved into it, the old nursing home would be demolished. Both S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes are doing well. David Bucek gave the cemetery report. He reported the dedication of the historical marker for the SPJST Moravia Cemetery took place on April 13. Also, he stated the Texas Historic Cemetery Marker for the SPJST Shiner Cemetery is at the foundry. Fraternal Activities Coordinator Janie Bucek reported on upcoming SPJST activities in the state. She will attend the District Six Fraternal Activities Coordinators’ Workshop on June 26 at Lodge 30, Taiton. Under new business, we started working on our Lodge 151 mission statement. Information about developing a mission statement was passed out to the members before the meeting. After the members studied the information, several ideas were presented. To give more thought to our mission statement, we decided to table the discussion until our next meeting. For fun, Second Vice President Ray Pilgrim composed this humorous mission statement: “To serve our members, we work and slave for each other from the nursing home to the grave.” In addition, Lodge 151 voted to donate $100 to West Benevolence Fund. District Six Director Karen Kaspar was commended for sponsoring SPJST commercials on radio station KULP in El Campo, Texas. District Director Karen Kasper then gave her report. The meeting of the Fort Worth Friendship Club was called to order on Wednesday, June 5, 2013, by President Betty Krenek. Everyone was welcomed. The Pledge of Allegiance was said. Due to the absence of Vice President Alene Kercho, Lydia Alholm was asked to read a poem “Prayer of
Trust” which was about firemen. It was a sad poem. Hostesses Felma Smith and Libbie Vrla were thanked. I was one of the hostesses, and I want to especially thank Lupe Esparza for all her good help. I would not have made it without her. Thanks also to Sharron Connelly for washing all the dishes, to Stanley Krenek for setting up all the tables, and thanks to all the other helpers. We did appreciate all of you. Secretary Elizabeth Creamer read the minutes from the last meeting, and Treasurer Jo Ann Wilcox gave the financial report. Both were accepted as presented. Ella and Ann, it was nice to see you, and the cake was wonderful. They make picture perfect cakes! The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to June celebrants Lorraine

Golden Corral has a private room, but is not available until 1 p.m. Stopping at the Christian Museum to view “The Lord’s Supper” display was discussed. It was then voted to meet at St. Thomas at 11:15 a.m., with car pools leaving at 11:30 a.m. to the Christian Museum, 3221 Hamilton Avenue (on the corner of Bailey Avenue). We will then leave the Museum about 12:30 p.m. for Golden Corral, arriving about 1 p.m. Cost was discussed. It was then that Lydia Alholm got up and announced she was making a donation to the Club as she has been a longtime member, received lots of benefits, and now she wants to give back. She made a very generous donation which was greatly appreciated by everyone. Thanks, Lydia, you are so special to do this. They will also have a cake walk, 50/50 drawing, and other prize drawings. While we were waiting for Stanley Krenek and the chicken to arrive, Sharron Connelly got up and talked about attending school in the early days at St. Thomas with all teachers being nuns. Sharron can make any story funny. I wonder if she really did some of those things she told about! When Stanley and the chicken arrived, grace was said, lunch was enjoyed then games were played. A good time was had by all.

I also learned that Pat’s daughter-in-law Shari McWilliams also takes Sister Frances to some of the Rangers games. She talked about all the special treatment Sister Frances gets from all the ushers, and that everyone around knows her and really caters to her. Helen Skrasek had trigger-finger surgery on her right hand this week, but seems to be doing well, just a little slow, having to use her left hand for everything. We had several members absent Kathy Ormsbee, our chicken lady as she is lovingly called; Anna Johnson had a doctor’s appointment; Camille Bolcer was doing something on Tuesday and Thursday and decided she would rest on Wednesday; and Alene Kercho was also missed. We continue to miss Linda Horner. Get well soon. We miss you! Tracy Horn attended her brother’s grandson’s wedding in Deanville. She said it was a small but beautiful wedding, and that the food was wonderful. Martin’s BBQ from Bryan catered. Tracy talked about how good the barbecue was. Kaycee Lehmann was ready for prom night in Tahoka. Kaycee is the daughter of Lee and Pam Lehmann and a member of SPJST Lodge 49, Rowena Youth Club, where she serves as sergeant-atarms.
I enjoyed reading about “Nonat” in the Věstník recently. I googled it on the internet and ordered some for myself and each of my sisters. We all recall that our grandparents Frank and Marie Patril really believed in this healing salve and used it on our scrapes, cuts, burns, etc., when we were little. I haven’t had occasion to use it yet, but will let you know if it still works. The Southern District Sokol Slet was held this past weekend. Originally, it had been planned to be held in West, but in view of the tragic event, Ennis stepped up and held it for them. West had excellent participation along with Corpus Christi, Houston, Dallas, Ennis, and Fort Worth. It was a fun two days. Remember, we are going out to eat this month so you do not have to bring any food. See you at St. Thomas Church at 11:15 a.m., and be sure to bring your appetite. So Until, Keep Smiling! Top Home Staging Tips to Help Sell Your Home

If you want your home to sell fast and for the best price, staging it is a definite necessity. But knowing what to do isn’t always easy. Here are some
roping, qualifying for nationals in breakaway roping and team roping, the rookie all-around award and the Champion All-Around Cowboy title, among the most coveted in the sport. In 2011, Green returned from state finals with 10 trophy buckles and a saddle. Green again took regional titles in his seventh grade year, finishing as reserve champion team roper, tiedown roper and ribbon roper, and earning the all-around award to qualify for the Texas state finals, where he won 10 trophy buckles for placing in the top six at each event. Again qualifying to the nationals, Green competed in team roping, ribbon roping and light rifle, having won the reserve championship shooting award in the state.
great home staging tips to sell your home:
1. First, cleaning your home is the most important thing. a. A dirty, messy, cluttered home is a turn off and a perfect way to get a lot less than you are asking. b. Start by decluttering. Take all the things on shelves and furniture, pictures on the walls and so forth and pack them up. You’re going to have to do so to move anyway.
2. Then clean floor to ceiling and everything in between cleaning. a. Under furniture, in closets, behind doors. Buyers look every where. Steam clean carpets, wax and buff hard woods and make every surface gleam even the base boards. b. Cleaning your home may not seem like home staging but it really is and is extremely important
At the 2012 National Junior High Rodeo finals in Gallup, Green broke the arena record in team roping and won the second go-round, and placed in the top six in the first round of ribbon roping. The National Junior Rodeo Finals this year begin in Gallup on June 24 and continue through July 2. Events are broadcast on ihigh.com daily.

to getting the best price when you sell your home.
3. Most people think home staging is moving furniture around but that is not all of it. a. Check all the walls, wood work and doors for chipped paint, nail holes and other defects that make rooms look shabby. b. Fix them with some spackle and consider repainting. c. Touch ups may not match, and neutral colors help people envision their things in the house.
4. Make sure cupboards open and shut, that their doors are level and match and that no taps are dripping. a. Fix minor plumbing issues, and check to be sure all the electrical works. These things will be part of any inspection anyway, so make things faster at the time of sale.

b. Also, people will think your house is nicer if everything works and looks right.
5. Move furniture around so that rooms look spacious and larger. a. If there is too much furniture in a room, thin that out as well. b. Less is more, and remember that space sells. Clean out closets and make them look big as well. c. Bedrooms and baths should get new linens.
6. Find bedding that looks modern and minimal. New, fresh and updated are what buyers are looking for, so give it to them.
To sell your home, make it look the best it can. Ask your Realtor for direction and get to work because if you want to sell your home, cleaning your home and staging it isn’t optional.

Rebuilding and Recovering After Tragedies
community coming together to provide food, shelter – and, most importantly, support for one another. Since then, the outpouring of donations has overwhelmed the tiny town. As generous Texans reach out to help their neighbors in the wake of these devastating events, they should carefully vet relief organizations and websites before making any charitable contributions. Sadly, cybersquatters – unscrupulous individuals who register online domain names with the intention of using them in bad faith – often move quickly to exploit tragedies. According to an industry news site about online domain names, more than 150 websites with domain names relating to the West Fertilizer explosion have been registered. While a few of these domain names possibly will be used for genuine charitable or other efforts, the majority of them are destined to be used as scam-related websites to fraudulently solicit charitable donations or maliciously provide links to malware-infected sites. Texans who want to contribute to relief efforts to benefit survivors of the recent Moore, Oklahoma tornadoes or the West explosions should do so through well-known and easily recognized charities, such as the American Red Cross. Doorstep, telephone and online solicitation should be treated cautiously and fully researched. What we are seeing in West is a
Happy Birthday, Benjamin Dodd!

April brought a terrible tragedy to the rural community in West, Texas. In the wake of a deadly explosion that literally shook the town and reportedly claimed the lives of 10 first responders and four local residents, the good folks of West have embarked on the road to recovery and rebuilding. The day after the explosion, I had the opportunity to see the response to the situation in West personally. Before I got there, I knew the damage was going to be devastating, but there was nothing that could have prepared me for the destruction close to ground zero of the blast. But amid all of the damage, I also saw hope. I saw first responders who were helping begin the healing process for the people of West. And I saw the

Charitable Donations Texans who are solicited for charitable contributions to relief efforts by telephone, text message, email, mail, social networking sites or otherwise should consider the following:
• Ensure the relief organization is legitimate. Ask for credentials, including the soliciting entity’s exact name and telephone number, particularly if the purported relief organization is not well known.
Happy Birthday, Dianna Hejl!
• Call the charity directly and confirm that the solicitor is actually working for that organization.

• Watch for questionable charities using names that closely resemble the names of well-known charities. • Find out how the donation will be used.
• Be wary of appeals that are long on emotion and short on descriptions about how charitable contributions will aid the recovery effort.

By d.knape Lodge 187, Round Rock
When I’m around 3 year olds I’m actually pretty smart because they don’t know much and everything I say is brilliant I can actually sound like a wise old sage as I instruct and guide
them to the answers of life it’s only when I am around people my own age that things go awry for then I have to be serious and actually make sense which is hard to do considering my limitations so give me 3 year olds for companions we get along we think alike we can relate
and when in my latter years I’m in a nursing home being fed oatmeal with a spoon I will think back to those days with 3 year olds as some of the best days of my life and come to realize that I am now going backwards to be with them again. —SPJST—

Zabcikville Receives Texas State Historical Marker
Community members, family, and friends gathered in Zabcikville, Texas, on Saturday, May 25, 2013, for the dedication of a Texas State Historical Marker at the former store on Highway 53. The historical marker reads:
The area was originally known as Kocenda, but changed to Lugoville
around 1905 when John Alfred Lugo (1875-1963) opened a store in the
ZABCIKVILLE
Jan Zabcik Sr. (1810-1881), his wife, Anna Hruska (1825-1900), and daughters Johanna and Katerina traveled to Galveston, Texas, from Moravia in 1856 along with Jan’s brother, Martin Zabcik, and sister, Anna Zabcik. Once in Texas, the Zabciks made their way to Cat Springs in Austin County. While living and working in parts of Austin and Washington Counties, the Zabciks had five more children: John (Jan Jr.), Anna, Marie, Martin, and Joseph. In 1886, Anna Zabcik and her husband, Jan (John) Kadlecek moved to Bell County, followed by her brother, Jan Jr., and their brother-in-law, Martin Stepan. They all purchased land in Bell County as land ownership was a determining factor in status in the Czech community.
Pictured are sisters Betty Jean Zabcik Hall, left, and Barbara Zabcik Docekal at the dedication of the Zabcikville Historical Marker. “It was a great day for everyone,” Barbara reports. Barbara coordinated the ceremony. Betty Jean and Barbara are members of SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone. They are also the daughters of the late Ben and Regina Zabcik. Brother Ben served as SPJST Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary from 1961 to 1977.

community. In 1907, Lugo sold his store and house to Frank Joseph Marek Sr. (1884-1961) who changed the name to Marekville. The name changed a final time in 1923 when Frank Zabcik purchased the store, saloon, house, and land and changed the name to Zabcikville. Frank Zabcik replaced the old store building with a new stucco-faced structure in 1932 and the area and businesses grew. Other businesses included a cotton gin, blacksmith shop, automobile repair garage, granary, and café. In addition, members of the community were involved in social activities such as sports, entertainment shows, and religious associations, and joined to form co-ops. Most of the original land purchased by the Zabcik family remains in the hands of descendants. Citizens of the area continue to farm the land and provide services to the community. In Memoriam
In Memory of Willie Mae Vanicek
Funeral services for Willie Mae Hutka Vanicek were held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at Seaton Brethren Church with the Reverend Denise Mikeska officiating. She died Saturday, June 15 following a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s. Burial followed at Seaton National Cemetery. Visitation was Tuesday, Willie Mae Vanicek June 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple. Willie Mae was born August 30, 1927, in Temple Texas, the middle child of the late Paul and Annie (Pagac) Hutka. When she was five, Willie Mae’s father died, and she was raised by foster parents Emil and Minnie Fojtasek of the Red Ranger and Ratibor communities. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Willie Mae gave unselfishly of herself throughout her life. Possessing a true servant’s heart, Wilie Mae’s compassion to do unto others was an inspiration. Throughout her adult life, she gave unselfishly of herself to care for and manage the personal affairs of her brother, mother-in-law, mother, foster mother, cousin, and beloved husband during their times of need. As an employee of Haywood Manufacturing and Temple Independent School District, Willie Mae was a tireless worker and friend to many, bringing warmth to the lives of everyone she touched. After attending Thompson, Content, and Temple schools, Willie Mae met her sweetheart Henry Vanicek, following her performance in a school play. Henry and Willie Mae were married on December 20, 1945, just before Henry shipped out to the South Pacific, Philippines, and Japan in World War II. Married for 50 years, Willie Mae and Henry raised three children David, Harold, and Brian. A woman of faith with a strong work ethic, Willie Mae was no stranger to the joys and discomforts of farmwork. She was a member of Seaton Brethren Church for her entire adult life and in recent years, a visitor, along with her aide and companion, Savana Maizel, to the
New Faith Fellowship Church. Willie Mae devoted quality time as well as quantity time to her children serving as the perpetual school room mother and PTA member, hosting class parties, accompanying students on field trips and baking for countless school concession sales. With the birth of her first granddaughter Terri in 1967, Willie Mae and Henry took on the role of supportive grandparents being there as needed and being there to share and celebrate the defining moments of their grandchildren’s lives. With a joyous spirit and zest for life, Willie Mae loved to dance, read, play dominoes, build puzzles, try new recipes, bake cookies, cakes, kolaches, and rosettes, chat with friends and family and - especially in her later years - go on outings to the casinos of Shreveport, Atlantic City, and Las Vegas. Both Willie Mae and her husband Henry were active members of SPJST and involved in a range of Czech heritage and community service projects over the years. Willie Mae received the Lifetime Achiever Award for loyal and dedicated service to SPJST and SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone in 2002. May her dearly departed soul rest in everlasting peace. Pallbearers were Harold Vanicek, Jr., Brent Vanicek, Samuel Vanicek, Ronald Psencik, Anton Hutka, and Bill Smetanka. Memorials may be made to the SPJST Scholarship Fund, c/o SPJST Home Office, P.O. Box 100, Temple, Texas 76503. Willie Mae is survived by son David and wife Pat Vanicek of Zabcikville; daughter-in-law Doris Vanicek of Rosebud; son Brian and wife Joan Vanicek of Zabcikville; grandchildren Terri Vanicek of Zabcikville, Harold and wife Deborah Vanicek of Marble Falls, Brent and wife Jennifer Vanicek of Temple, and Stephanie Vanicek and Samuel Vanicek, both of Austin; and great-grandchildren Virginia and Henry Vanicek of Marble Falls. I would also like to thank Lynette Talasek, our new State Youth Director, at completing her first LIT camp and showing us the characteristics of a true leader. Fraternally, Brady Alexander —SPJST—

2012 - 2013 Youth Club Member Update - Merit Points and Meeting Attendance
Fourth Quarter Merit Points and Meeting Attendance The totals below in the column labeled “Pts” are merit points earned in the June 2012 to May 2013 youth year. This is total merit points for the 20122013 youth year. Please see “What is the Merit Point System?” for complete information about the contest. The number in the column labeled “Mtgs” is the number of meetings each youth club member has attended during the June 2012 to May 2013 youth year. Please see “What is an Active Youth Member?” below to determine number of meetings needed to participate in youth activities.
What is the Merit Point System? Youth club members earn merit points for participating in SPJST lodge, district and state activities. At the end of the youth year, points are totaled and the youth with the highest points in the youth club receive cash awards.
Contest Dates June 1, 2012 to May 31, 2013
Merit Point Contest Age Divisions Junior—Entering Kindergarten to Age 12 Teen—Age 13 to High School Senior
Rules The youth leader or assistant youth leader is responsible for keeping track of the merit points for each active member of the youth club. The points are to be sent to the State Youth Director on the Quarterly and Merit Point Reports each quarter. Youth club members are also encouraged to keep up with their points and turn them in to the youth leader on a quarterly basis. This system helps both the youth leader and the youth member keep better records of youth participation. Current, official Quarterly and Merit Point Reports, available from the State Youth Director may only be used in the Merit Point Contest. The Quarterly and Merit Point Reports sent to the State Youth Director by the youth leader will be kept on file for at least six months following the conclusion of the contest. Merit points are earned for only those activities listed under Youth Point Values. An activity can only earn points in one category on the point sheet. When in doubt about any activity earning points, contact the State Youth Director prior to the contest conclusion. Everyone will be subject to the same rules in every contest. Failure to comply with any rule shall mean immediate withdrawal.
Merit Point Awards First through fifth place awards are presented in the junior and teen divisions of each youth club. The amount of points that top winners receive in both divisions will determine where the point rankings of the first through fifth winning categories begin. First place winners will be those equal to and 20 points below the top place winner in their age division. Second Place will be 21 to 40 points below the top winner in their age division. Third place will be 41 to 60 points below the top winner in their age division. Fourth place will be 61 to 80 points below the top winner in their age division. Fifth place will be 81 to 100 points below the top winner in their age division. Awards are presented on the lodge, district, and state levels in the junior and teen merit point contests. At each District YAD, the Home Office presents first through fifth place awards to qualifying junior and teen youth club members. The junior and teen with the most points in each district also receive recognition. In the event of a tie, all who tied for first place will receive the award.* Junior and Teen Point Awards First Place $30 Second Place - $25 Third Place - $20 Fourth Place - $15 Fifth Place $10
What is an Active Youth Member? A youngster with a current SPJST insurance certificate may enter the youth program the youth year that he/she will be entering kindergarten. To be considered active, youth club member must attend a majority (seven) of the monthly meetings during the year. The youth must attend the majority of these meetings at his/her home youth club. In those instances where a lodge does not have a youth club, the youngster may attend adult lodge meetings or the meetings of another youth club. The youngster will be eligible for camp and Youth Achievement Day (YAD) after the completion of his/her kindergarten year. Active youth members must be single and not be pregnant or a parent. The age of the youth on June 1 of the current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.). The youth year begins June 1 and ends May 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school.

Visit the Czech Muzika exhibit at Temple’s Czech Heritage Museum
By Becky Vajdak, Administrator Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center
Our Czech ancestors lived a life tied to the land and for them, summer was a time of busy, back-breaking work in the fields from dawn to dusk. Cattle, cotton, corn, and other agricultural endeavors forged lifelong family connections and a strong tie to the very earth they worked. It is easy to forget when we travel past the green corn growing in neatly planted rows the hardships our ancestors endured. Miserable conditions aboard crowded ships, hunger, cold, and sickness were suffered in order to have the chance at a better life waiting in Texas. On foot, horseback, and by wagon, the Czechs migrated north from Galveston to the fertile blackland of the Brazos and beyond. They carried their Czech culture with them and despite the odds, flourished in a foreign place. Their music, food, language, religion, clothes, art, and agricultural practices became woven into the very fabric of life that is Texas. For those of us no longer tied to the land, summer has become a time to travel. We visit both far and dear, reconnecting with friends and family. I was reminded of the importance of this reconnection recently when attending the 60th annual Vajdak Family Reunion in Snook at SPJST Lodge 9, Snook Hall. It is one of many annual reunions held across the state by numerous families. Vital family history is shared and questions asked of the older members of the family who are present. Children darted in and out between the chairs at the lodge hall while avid genealogists exchanged email addresses with each other. Family histories do not have to be complicated or “perfect” to be shared

with others. I have been to the Genealogy Library in Salt Lake City. Many of the family histories housed on the first floor of the library are selfpublished. Here at the Czech Heritage Museum, located at 119 West French Avenue in Temple, we have a collection of family histories that have been donated to our genealogy library. Do we have your family’s history? If not, we would love to accept a copy to
share with those who come to do research. At the Vajdak reunion, there were Czech names, English names, Italian names, Irish names, German names, and Scots names. All were welcome at the tables as part of the Vajdak family. You are welcome here at the museum—no matter whom you are researching. While researching for the Czech Muzika exhibit, Curator Don Mears
Lodge 88, Houston member Becky Vajdak named Czech Heritage Museum Administrator
Becky Vajdak of Temple was recently named the new administrator of the Czech Heritage Museum. Becky is a member of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston. She was born and raised in Houston. She is married to Roy Vajdak, and they have three children Rachel, Madeline, and Cameron. A graduate of Texas A&M University with both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees, Becky worked as a landman after graduation where she became quite familiar with courthouse records. Since 1987, she has owned an antique quilt business and has taught and lectured on American quilts to guilds and groups. She also lectured in Japan at the Yokohama Quilt Festival, the Kumamoto American Festival, and the Bishop’s Palace on the island of Maui, Hawaii. Becky and husband Roy have had a real estate business for many years, and she served three terms on the Harris County Appraisal Review Board in Houston. She was also elected to office on the Board. Becky also resided in Las Vegas, Nevada,
for several years where she was employed by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. “Genealogy has been a passion since 1968 when I discovered my family tree at my grandparent’s 50th wedding anniversary,” Becky says. She is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and is working on her membership for the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. She is currently active in the Wildflowers Quilt Guild and the Texas Wildflower Needlepoint Guild. When her children were younger, she served as a 4-H Leader, Girl Scout Leader, PTA officer, and Cub Scout Leader. Texas and Texas history have always fascinated Becky. “My roots in Texas are deep—going back six generations,” she says. “My family first entered Texas with Stephen F. Austin. The Czech culture has been an essential part of Texas and my history. I look forward to the opportunity to reach out through the museum and share this culture and history.” —SPJST—

discovered a copy of the Star-Spangled Banner with the words in the Czech language. The museum wants to share this in honor of July 4th. We will have a mini-exhibit of related items in our front windows, viewable the first week in July. Make sure you make time to see our Czech Muzika exhibit. It will be sure to bring back fond memories of dance halls and polka bands. Czech music has had a great influence on music and musicians throughout Texas. It is important to teach this to others, but it is more important to remind ourselves of the invaluable gifts our culture has shared with Texas. —SPJST—

Patton Memorial Plzeň Museum
On May 6, 2013, it was 68 years since the end of World War II came to Plzeň and the borderlands of South-Western Bohemia. The Czech lands spent more time under Nazi occupation than anywhere else. They were occupied by Hitler’s Germany in two stages - October 1938 and March 1939 - and were among the last places to be completely liberated, with remnants of the German army continuing to fight in Prague for several days after the official capitulation. Most of the Czech lands were liberated by Soviet red army troops advancing from the east, but American soldiers under the command of General George S. Patton were first to reach south-western Bohemia, and they decisively liberated Plzeň itself after an uprising led by Škoda factory workers on the 5th May - early on the morning of the 6th. Close to the bridge across the river Mže - named in the General’s honour - is the low, white building of the George Patton Memorial Museum, which shows and explains everything
about the final days of the war including one of the great what-ifs of modern Czech history; why the Americans held back around Plzeň and waited for their Russian allies to liberate Prague and the rest of Bohemia. The Patton Memorial Pilsen includes more than 1,000 exhibits from private collections. The opening section of the museum presents the final air-raid campaigns in Western Bohemia and the bombing of the Škoda plants. Surrounded by the sound of sirens and authentic film sequences and photographs of that time, visitors are drawn into the atmosphere of the final combat operations of World War II. The exhibition documents the advancement of the United States Army in what was then Czechoslovakia, and the deployment of United States soldiers until November 1945. Authentic photographs depict the moments of the war’s final days, the arrival of the United States’ troops, moments of relaxation and friendly encounters with locals, as well as some ceremonial events – e.g. recordings from a troop inspection on June 15, 1945 attended by president Dr. Edvard Beneš. Other exhibits document the UNRRA aid thanks to which people were able to cope with the difficult situation after the war ended – food rations of all sorts, empty and unopened food cans, flour and maize bags or popular chewing gums. There is the gear and equipment of the time, medical material, eating kits, field rations, sports and relaxation equipment, craft tools, printed materials and many other objects which the United States’ soldiers left behind as war relics. A significant part of the exhibition focuses on General George S. Patton, the legendary commander of the 3rd US Army and his old friend General
Ernest N. Harmon, who provided technical and material assistance for the recovery of our country and who said goodbye to the Czech population together with US troops during the last inspection in November 1945. Patton was a successful Olympic pentathlete, was famous for his colourful phrases, and was one of the earliest to comprehend and publicly speak about the shift in the relationship with the Soviet Union from ally to rival. The museum also presents documents, newspapers and magazines from the period of the totalitarian regime in 1948 to 1989, symbolically placed in a barred cage. These documents provide a statement about the efforts of the communist regime to obscure facts about the liberation of Plzeň by the US Army. In between all the photographs and panels of text, which are in both Czech and English, are display cases of uniforms, instruments, weapons, ammunition, instruction manuals and personal effects of the soldiers like cigarette cases, letters from home, and pictures of loved ones. Another exhibit is contained in a steel cage and concerns communistera propaganda about the American liberation of Plzeň - the museum’s response to the communist-era revisionist fabrications that claimed Soviet troops, not Americans, were responsible for the city's liberation. The final exhibit is about veterans of the campaign and their return visits to Plzeň. Especially poignant are handwritten memories of former American soldiers who have returned to Plzeň in a new century.

U.S. World War II Army tank in Plzeň
Almost exactly 68 years to the day, an M-4 Sherman tank, much like the one commanded by Colonel Charles H. Noble from Combat Command B, 3rd Army, World War II, was delivered to Plzeň, thanks to the combined efforts of the United States Army, the city of Plzeň, Czech Republic, United States Embassy, Prague, Czech Military History Institute, and George Patton Waters, who donated the money to assist in the restoration of the tank. George Patton Waters is the grandson of General George S. Patton and the son of General John K. Waters. The tank was placed at the zoological and botanical gardens in Plzeň, next to the Patton Memorial Museum, as a memorial to the soldiers from the United States Army who came to Plzeň, fought, and defeated the Nazis on the last days of World War II, May 5 to 6, 1945. The tank is positioned so as to symbolize the overtaking of the Nazi position. Plzeň’s zoo was constructed on the former grounds of a Nazi bunker so it seemed a fitting place and time to unveil the contribution to the zoo.
