Lodge 6, Cottonwood member relays thanks

Dear SPJST, Howdy! My name is Jennifer Klein, and I am writing to thank you for the General Freshman Scholarship of $1,000 that was awarded to me last year. I am entering my sophomore year as an honors environmental studies major with a business minor, and I am very excited for what the Geosciences Program has to offer me. I am proud to report that I made the Dean’s List both Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 semesters. This next academic year will bring many challenges and opportunities for me, and I am very grateful to be a scholarship recipient to help defray expenses.

With regards to my extracurricular activities, I am a member of MSC Hospitality, the Official Host Committee of Texas A&M, which allows me to be involved in numerous community service events each semester and to meet new people. I am also working full-time this summer to earn money for the opportunity to study abroad in the summer of 2014. From the Fraternal Department

State FAC’s July Fraternal Updates

End of Summer Getaway Good times again await you at the Corpus Christi getaway. Make plans now to join us on August 9 to 11, 2013, for a fun-filled weekend. This event gets bigger and better each year. Lodge 79, Corpus Christi member Larry Elzner has organized the golf tournament for all you golfers on Friday morning August 9. For more information, contact Larry (361) 687-7125. Chris Rybak will again perform on Friday night for all the evening activities at the Aloha Party. The theme for Saturday night will be a tribute to the “Groovy Seventies” and include entertainment from DJ Arnold Medina with Blue Moon Entertainment. This year, rooms have been blocked at Holiday Inn Emerald Beach. If you have not already done so, please make your reservations as soon as possible by calling the hotel (361) 883-5731 and refer to group code “SPJ” to assure proper room rates.

July 20 Gala to Benefit West Benevolence Fund The West Benevolence Fund was established by SPJST on April 18 — the day after a massive fertilizer explosion rocked the Central Texas city of West. Two months have passed and, as expected, the media fanfare has subsided. Even so, dozens of homes near the plant remain vacant or have boarded-up windows as families work to repair the damage caused by the explosion that sprayed debris as far as two-and-a-half miles away from the plant. The blast destroyed 150 homes and buildings, injured 200 people, and killed 15, including 12 first responders who were working to put out the fire. Initial response, primarily, from SPJST members and lodges in support of the West Benevolence Fund has been gratifying. To date, more than $39,000 has been received. A committee consisting of the presidents of the four West-area SPJST lodges has been working to identify projects needing attention and submitting requests to the SPJST Home Office for the disbursement of funds contributed to the West Benevolence Fund. The first check issued was in the amount of $3,937 and was presented to West Sokol to enable the gymnastics club to purchase needed

equipment that was lost when their building was destroyed. Additional rebuilding and support projects are being considered by the West Benevolence Fund Committee for assistance. SPJST is partnering with lodges, members, and friends of the Society to host the West Gala on Saturday, July 20 at Seaton Star Hall, courtesy of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton. Proceeds will benefit West Benevolence Fund. Tickets for the event are $50 each and will cover an enjoyable evening of dining and entertainment. Your $50 ticket also entitles you to one chance in the drawing. Grand prize will be a trip for two — transportation and lodging — to the Czech Republic furnished by V2 Incentives. Other prizes include five $250 Visa gift cards courtesy of RVOS Insurance (2), Gulf Coast Claims Service (2), and Purifoy and Company Insurance (1). To reserve your tickets, please contact Debbie Klinkovsky at the SPJST Home Office at (254) 7731575. Slovacek’s Sausage will be furnishing a delicious barbecue dinner. Musical entertainment is being provided by The Ennis Polka Boys and Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six. Master of ceremonies for the evening will be Alfred Vrazel, host of the long-running Vrazels’ Polka Show. We’re also in the process of collecting merchandise for the live auction, silent auction, and bucket drawings that will be held on the night of the West Gala. For more information on how to give an item or to schedule a pick-up, please contact Debbie Klinkovsky at the SPJST Home Office at (254) 773-1575.

Pre-Gala Party—Friday, July 19 In conjunction with the West Gala, there will also be a pre-gala party on Friday night, July 19 at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall with 50s and 60s musical entertainment provided by Johnny and the Corvettes of Houston, Texas. Friday night attendees will also be able to build on the silent auction as well as purchase tickets for the Saturday night prize drawing. Admission is free, and all ages are invited. The entertainment is being sponsored by Gulf Coast Claims Service, who along with RVOS, continues to play a major role in the West rebuilding effort.

Barbecue Cook-Off The entire Gala weekend is being held in conjunction with SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton’s annual barbecue cook-off. For cook-off registration information, please contact SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton President Edwin Pechal (254) 9852282 or (254) 984-2255

By the way, Glenn and Jeanette Kaminsky both had June birthdays. We wish them happy birthday and many happy returns. Mary, a longtime Sokol member, is the Sokol National Operations Advisor whose responsibility is strengthening the organization by strengthening each individual Sokol unit. Mary spent the week visiting all of the Sokols in Texas and learning about the synergies of Sokol and SPJST and how the SPJST donation helps support the Sokol youth training programs. All of the Sokols of the Southern District are focused on long-term growth and service to the community and send their appreciation to SPJST for its support.

Happy Birthday, Albert!

Albert celebrated his birthday on June 5, 2013, but had to share his birthday gifts with Kenny G (saxophone player), Jill Biden (wife of Vice President Joe Biden), and Pat Garrett (sheriff famous for killing Billy the Kid). Not really . . . actually all of these famous people just share the same birth date. We’re sure Albert got to keep all of his gifts! Another look at June 5 in history: in 1907, the automatic washer and dryer were introduced; in 1937, Henry Ford initiated a 32-hour work week (okay - who is responsible for the 40-hour work week!); and in 1977, the first personal computer (Apple II) went on sale. Pretty neat, but none as cool as Albert. Happy Birthday, Albert! From Lodge 48, Beyersville Members

Lodge 187 Round Rock welcomes guests

Jennave Fuchs started our entertainment by talking about June brides. Mrs. Fuchs even brought her wedding dress that will be 64 years old later this year in October since Mr. and Mrs. Wilford Fuchs got married in 1949. Jennave was 19 years old when she married, and she even made her own wedding dress that took 13 yards of satin. The wedding dress is still so beautiful. Thank you, Jennave, for sharing it and all the great memories, too. We were honored to welcome several visitors. It was great seeing District Two Director Jesse Pospisil and wife Linda and District Two Youth

Counselor Patsy Koslovsky and grandson Colton Regan. Thank you, Rubie Volek and Jesse and Linda, for the door prizes. Jesse shared some information on the July 20 fundraiser in Seaton to benefit West, and you can win a trip to the Czech Republic. He also mentioned the July 7 meeting for all fraternal activities coordinators in Taylor to help with paperwork. Patsy mentioned that we need to get

the kiddos to start attending the youth club meetings. If they cannot attend, there is one call-in meeting that they can do that can replace going to a meeting or they can attend other lodge meetings. The youth handed out treat bags of trail mix along with a poem to all dads for Father’s Day. June birthday celebrants are Jennifer McCarthy on the 9th; Colton Regan on the 11th; and Deborah

nice. The hall had the tables and chairs set up for the Sokol Slet that weekend. Before we knew it, quilters were all around - the above and Dorothy Booth, Martha Ritchey, Dolores Vrana, Dorothy J. Kudrna, Dorothy Bobalek, and Pat Fowler. By lunchtime, we had 19 members. President Irene led us in grace. Then, we all enjoyed a most delicious lunch. Thank you all for the food, the set up, and clean up. After lunch, President Irene called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and the “Our Father” was said for all our members present and those not present. Secretary Dolores read the minutes of the last meeting. Treasurer Dorothy gave her report. Both were approved as read. Vice President Ginny read a really cute article, “Meaning of Life,” which was enjoyed by all. Ginny always has something good to read. Sunshine Lady Eleanora announced June birthday celebrants— Marie Vrla and Mildred Krajca. As neither were present, we didn’t get to sing. Quilt scheduler Pat announced in July - we will have our elephant sale and show-and-tell; August - we will quilt for Ann and in September, for Irene; October is open; November the Junior Sokol Polka Festival quilt; and December - our Christmas party. President Irene announced who won this year’s Polka Festival quilt. It was Tabitha Witt from Lubbock. She is our member Joan Brown’s granddaughter. Congratulations to Tabitha. President Irene talked some about the making of our new membership directory. She is compiling information, rules, and what-have-you for it. It will be great. We voted if everyone wanted to start saying “Our Father” for all our members. It was a unanimous vote. We also discussed our trip to Midlothian for the quilt show on Friday, July 19. We must know at the July meeting if you plan to go and who can take their car. We hope all of you can make it. Irene talked about the hassle she had at the bank when she and Dorothy Bobalek went to change the signature card. They had to go through so much, answering questions, showing our minutes, signing all kinds of papers. We hope it all worked out. President Irene announced the next meeting on July 11 will start at 10 a.m. Please bring all your sale items priced; if they don’t sell, please take them

home or you can use the big trash can out back. The sale will start at 11 a.m., we will have lunch at 12 noon then a short meeting will follow, show-andtell comes next, and the 50-50 dollar game. I almost forgot to mention our prize drawing, the baby quilt, and other items that Henrietta Milan sent us. To all our new members, please bring your special items for show-andtell. Anything that is old, a keepsake, or new from a trip, something you have made or not. We want to see your things and hear your story about what ever you bring.

Olga Krysinski made a motion to adjourn the meeting. It was seconded by Pat Fowler.

Other News Ginny Svehlak told us a wonderful story about her grandfather Stephan Kovar who came by himself to America as a stowaway on a ship when he was 12 years old. Ginny’s aunt, his daughter, would tell them stories about him. He walked with one crutch and had a bushy mustache. Her aunt always told them he invented the fly swatter. He took a square piece of leather and nailed it to a little board.

Lodge 160, San Angelo joined with Wall Middle School CORE (Choosing Only Responsible Environments) students for a Join Hands Day project. These students were encouraged to bring personal hygiene products to donate to the Concho Valley Home for Girls/Children Emergency Shelter. The students dropped the clothes off in Mrs. Jansa’s classroom each morning from April 29 to May 1. Her classes helped in boxing up all of the donated items. Students went above and beyond in their donations to this very worthy project. A total of 675 bottles of shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, lotion, deodorant, and miscellaneous items such as ponytail holders, wash cloths, dental floss, Q-tips, make up bags, tissues, etc. were col-

lected! Fifty-three of the middle school students delivered the boxes to the shelter and visited with the counselors there. The shelter was very appreciative of the much needed donations. Wall Middle School CORE group consists of sixth, seventh, and eighth graders who sign a pledge saying they won’t participate in underage drinking. Their parents also sign a pledge stating they won’t provide alcohol to their minor children. CORE students attend a summer camp. Services were at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 19, 2013, in Hillside Christian Church Chapel West Campus with Johnathan Mast officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements were by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Frances Pybus Directors. Frances was born August 10, 1922, an only child of Czech parents Frank Joe Masar and Cillie Lillie Masar delivered by a mid-wife in a home outside of Lockett, Texas. She grew up living on several sharecrop farms. She graduated from Vernon High School in 1940, where she met and married the love of her life, Luther Joe Pybus on June 7, 1942. Her husband Joe was a staff sergeant serving in the 8th Air Force, United States Army Air Corps, in the European Theatre during World War II. She lived with her parents on a farm with her young son Jerry until her husband returned after the end of the war. The family then moved to Amarillo in 1948. She was a most loving, dedicated homemaker all of her life. Her “home-style” cooking skills were legendary to her beloved family. She loved the Dallas Cowboys (always making an excuse for them when they lost), tending her flowers, working puzzles, and spoiling her pet cats through the years. Her values of always doing your best, always telling the truth, and putting others first inspired everyone. She was proud to call Harrington Assisted Living “home” for over eight years. She always had a kind word for everyone. She was a member of the old Buchanan Street Methodist Church. She was a member of SPJST Lodge ____ for over 65 years. She was preceded in death by her husband Joe in 1989; her second son, Douglas Carl in 2009; her parents; and her loving, special friend Charlie Mae Neely, who was like a sister to her. Survivors include sons Jerry Wayne Pybus and wife Judith and Dr. Charles

Jay Pybus and wife Shannon, all of Amarillo; daughter-in-law Cheryle Pybus of Plainview; grandchildren Dewayne Tod Pybus and wife Stacey of Commerce, Tim Wayne Pybus and wife Melissa, Haley, James and Jacky Pybus, all of Amarillo, and Carla Sells and husband David of Plainview; great-grandchildren Audrey and Kate Pybus of Commerce, Quinton Humphreys, and Brantlee and Destiny Sells, all of Plainview, and Avery Pybus of Amarillo. State Youth Director shares July updates

Dear Youth Leaders, It’s summer, and you know what that means? It’s time for SPJST District Camps, District Youth Achievement Days, State Youth Achievement Day, and last, but not least—Corpus Christi End of Summer Getaway. District Three youth club members participated in their Youth Achievement Day (YAD) at Lodge 154, Fort Worth on June 23. The competition was fierce! By the time this newsletter gets to you, Districts Four, Five, and Seven will have had their YADs. District Two YAD will be hosted by Lodge 47, Seaton on July 13; District Six YAD will be hosted by Lodge 40, El Campo on July 21; and District One YAD will be held at Caldwell Civic Center on July 28. I look forward to seeing your talents at these events! District camps start in July as well and our 2012-2013 State Royalty will make their final public appearance in the July 4 parade in Belton, Texas. Leaders-In-Training Retreat was held at SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm on June 14 to 16. I had a great time engaging with our youth. Youth members were divided into six groups, and we hit the ground running. Campers were taught how to properly fit belts used in the high ropes course and how to correctly select and fit a lifejacket as well as what their duties are as an LIT. Later that evening, campers were treated to a pool party followed by guest speaker Tony Doland from Austin, Texas. Tony was a lot of fun, but also relayed an important message about bullying and the rippling effect this type of behavior can have on others. Saturday, campers learned some timeless dance moves that included

polka, schottische, Cotton-Eyed Joe, and a few line dances. ENC staff educated everyone on how to play the new elements as well as some of the older games located on the ENC camp grounds. There was lots of team building and a trip to Cooper Farm would not be complete without a whirl on the ropes course. Later that evening, everyone enjoyed practicing their dance moves and hanging out with new found friends. From my prospective, many of the LITs made new friends from other districts and this is what SPJST is all about! Thanks to my assistants, Tammy Martinez and Gena Weeks, for all of the help and support. A big thank you to all of the District Youth Counselors, their assistants, chaperones, and nurse Becky Zavodny who helped with the Leader-In-Training Retreat. The Cows had the winning tee-shirt design, and I will be getting the shirts to LITs before district camps. I know that many of our youth are excited about going to camp. Your District Youth Counselors and their assistants have worked many hours planning a great camp for the LeadersIn-Training, youth, and chaperones. Education and Nature Center Executive Director John Hoelscher and his staff are ready for our camps to begin. Let’s make this a summer that our youth will enjoy and have fond memories of the time they spent with their friends and family. In 1966, the crowning of a State King was initiated. For this year’s State Youth Achievement Day, a special effort is being made to invite all past SPJST State Royalty Courts to celebrate the selection of the 20132014 Royalty Court. The Home Office is sending invitations to past SPJST State Royalty Court members with good addresses on file. Please feel free to extend this invitation to your past lodge and district royalty court members to ensure that the 2013 SPJST State Youth Achievement is our biggest and best ever!

2013-2014 Youth Spectacular Changes We will try something a little different with this year’s SPJST Youth Spectacular (the tabloid that has featured all of the YADs and camps in the past). District YAD photos and summaries will appear in the Vestnik after each event. The Youth Spectacular will include State YAD results and photos, summer camp articles and photos, and other Youth Department activities and information.

Why We Observe Independence Day

M

ost people in the United States celebrate the 4th of July, but do you know exactly why the holiday is so important to our country? Imagine how you would feel if someone older than you -- like an older brother or sister -- kept telling you what to do all of the time and kept taking more and more of your allowance. That is how the colonists felt in the years leading up to 1776. Great Britain kept trying to make the colonists follow more rules and pay higher taxes. People started getting mad and began making plans to be able to make their own rules. They no longer wanted Great Britain to be able to tell them what to do, so they decided to tell Great Britain that they were becoming an independent country. To be independent means to take care of yourself, making your own rules and providing for your own needs.

The Congress met in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and they appointed a committee -- a group of people working together to do a specific job - to write a formal document that would tell Great Britain that the Americans had decided to govern themselves. The committee asked Thomas Jefferson to write a draft -- first try -- of the document, so he worked for days, in absolute secret, until he had written a document that he thought said everything important that the committee had discussed. On June 28, 1776, the committee met to read Jefferson’s copy. They made changes to the document and declared their independence on July 2, 1776. They officially adopted it on July 4, 1776. That is why we call it “Independence Day.” Congress ordered that all members must sign the Declaration of Independence and they all began signing the official copy on August 2, 1776. In January of the next year, Congress sent signed copies to all of the states. The Declaration of Independence is more than just a piece of paper. It is a symbol of our country’s independence and commitment to the idea of freedom. The signers of the Declaration of Independence wanted the citizens of the United States to have a document that spelled out what was important to our leaders and citizens. The people who signed the Declaration risked being hanged for treason by the leaders in Great Britain. Every time we look at the Declaration of Independence, we should think about all of the effort and ideas that went into the document, and about the courage it took for these people to stand up for what they knew was right -- independence! Declaration of Independence a Work of Art Completed in 1819, John Trumbull's Declaration of Independence is a 12-by-18-foot oil-on-canvas painting in the United States Capitol Rotunda that depicts the presentation of the draft of the Declaration of Independence to Congress.

Now It’s Your Turn! As noted above, the Declaration of Independence is a symbol of our country’s independence and commitment to the idea of freedom. Using the back of this sheet, identify some of the many freedoms that you know and enjoy as a citizen of the United States.

TCGS to host Generation to Generation Research Conference

Two jam-packed days of genealogy and an evening of fun entertainment will be in store for those attending the conference at the Caldwell Civic/Visitor Center on July 12 and 13, 2013. Hosted by the Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS), sessions will focus on ways and means of locating ancestral knowledge from generation to generation. The two-day event begins with registration beginning at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 12. At 12 noon, the first session—Genealogy Software - An Adventure—will begin. Duwain Pingenot and Cecilia Forrest will address the question of why using computer genealogy software provides the easiest way to put genealogical information into a media that can produce the greatest variety of charts and reports, and offers the most means for sharing the information Duwain took the first course in data processing offered by the University of Texas in 1959 called “High Speed Computer Programming.” That start and his background in engineering and business led to his working for Eastman Kodak Company in sales of computer peripherals for large mainframe computers. After 30 years, Duwain retired in 1991. He and his sister, Cecilia, are third generation Czech Texans born in Del Rio and raised in Ennis, Texas. His involvement in computer genealogy includes the software programs of Personal Ancestral File (PAF), Ancestral Quest, Family Tree Maker, and Ancestry. Duwain operates programs on both the Mac and PC operating systems. Cecilia Pingenot Forrest, who resides in Houston, is a member of the

Daughters of the Republic of Texas. Because of the early death of their parents, Cecilia and her brother, Duwain, both developed an appreciation for family ties that ultimately led to their shared interest in genealogy. Cecilia has served as the Migl Family Historian for over 30 years and has more than 18 binders of family records that she takes to their family reunions. While Cecilia has limited experience with several other genealogy programs, her main program continues to be PAF. Her research has moved from cemeteries, courthouses, Clayton Genealogy Library utilizing microfilm, the local LDS Family History Center, the Texas State Archives, and finally to online original records which can be digitally copied and added to her computer genealogy program. From 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., attendees will be given a choice between two sessions: Preserving and Restoring Vintage Photos, taught by Monica Havelka, or Google Your Genealogy taught by James Hollis. Monica’s career in graphics design for print publications, photography interests, and family photographs led her into the photo restoration field. She worked in two Georgetown frame shops that also laid the path to her photo restoration business, Lasting Images. The Williamson County Sun featured Monica’s interest in both genealogy and photo restoration in the Life Section of the July 10, 2011, Sun. James Hollas began genealogy research in 1990 when a cousin wanted a family tree. With a new computer and a free program, James began his genealogical journey. Bitten by the genealogy bug, he has been active in local and national societies since. After serving as treasurer of the

Austin Genealogical Society, he served as president in 2002 and 2003, and followed that with working with the Federation of Genealogical Societies cochairing its exhibit hall at their national conferences for a number of years. James is unique in finding genealogical needs and then goes about researching and putting a program together to help others. While using Google, James learned the many “tricks” to finding genealogical answers. James attended University of Texas and graduated from University of Corpus Christi with a degree in political science. Shortly, everyone will be buzzing about the Vestnik being online. The Portal to Texas History will be a jump start for attendees to learn about the Portal and the enormous amount of information it contains. Dreanna Belden, Assistant Dean for External Relations for the University of North Texas Libraries, explores how digital cultural heritage collections can most effectively be used in education, and collaborates with museums, libraries, and archives to place historic materials online. The American Library Association selected Ms. Belden as a participant in its prestigious Emerging Leaders program in 2007. She recently completed service as a Chair for the Advisory Board for the Texas State Library and Archives Commissions’ “Train to Share” IMLS funded program. In 2011, she became the first librarian elected to the Council of the Texas Association of Museums and was recently appointed to their executive board. The Portal to Texas History session will run from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. This session will let attendees see how the Portal is a digital gateway to historical and cultural heritage collections

throughout the state of Texas. With more than 200,000 materials that include historic newspapers, photographs, city and county records, memoirs, maps, etc., the Portal serves as an indispensable source for genealogists. After a time for visiting with other attendees or searching through the genealogical books in the Research Room, the aroma of delicious food will fill the building. The 5:30 p.m. menu for Friday evening will consist of grilled chopped sirloin, Czech potatoes, corn casserole, tea, rolls, coffee, and apple cobbler for dessert. Accordionist Henry Machicek along with his lovely wife Susan will take the stage Friday evening for a Parade of Kroje. As toes tap to the beat of their music, we are sure to see a smile and a twinkle in the eyes of Czechs and nonCzechs alike.

Be sure to arrive early Saturday morning and begin your day with kolaches, coffee, and/or orange juice and join Henry and Susan as they kick-off our Saturday with a sing-along, singing some of your favorite Czech songs. Except for college years at Texas Tech, and beginning his career in insurance in Houston, Allan Lueck has spent 64 years in Temple, the town in which he was born and raised. He says, “It qualifies me not only to be a pioneer, but an old geezer as well!” Allan did his first performance at age 13. Essentially magic has been his hobby, but he has performed at church functions, birthday parties, banquets, civic club meetings, etc. for a good number of years. In addition to the magic he performs, he adds humor

During the same 9 to 10 a.m. hour, Karen Matheson will present Salt Lake City and Its Czech Holdings. There are very few with more knowledge concerning the holdings at LDS than Karen. She has been doing genealogical research for more than 20 years and presently works as a professional genealogist. Karen enjoys mentoring, teaching, and sharing her enthusiasm for family history with others! She served five years as the director of Round Rock Texas Family History Center and currently serves as president of Williamson County Genealogical Society, as chapter representative for Lone Star Chapter of the APG, and secretary of Texas State Genealogical Society. Always a favorite, and one of our most requested speakers, is Doug Kubicek. With the presentation, “X” Marks the Spot; Photographs, Maps and More, more help is on the way for the Czech genealogist who cannot seem to find where the photographs in their family collections were taken. Special emphasis will be given to the Czech business sector in larger towns and communities using hard-to-find maps and other overlooked sources. Doug is a native Texan born and raised in Shiner, Texas. He graduated from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville with a degree in United States History and Cultural Geography. He is a 45-year member of Texas Historical Commission and Lavaca County Historical Commission and currently is serving as chairperson and archeological steward.

The Star Spangled Banner by Francis Scott Key

O say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming; And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there; O say, does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave? On that shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep, Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep, As it fitfully blows, now conceals, now discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam-In full glory reflected now shines in the stream; ‘Tis the Star-Spangled Banner; O long may it wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where are the foes who so vauntingly swore That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion A home and a country should leave us no more? Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave; And the Star-Spangled Banner in triumph doth wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

O thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand Between their loved homes and the war desolation; Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n-rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation! Then conquer we must, for our cause it is just, And this be our motto, “In God is our trust;” And the Star-Spangled Banner in triumph shall wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Happy Fourth of July from SPJST!
