It all started last September when three teens from Georgetown 4-H Club got together to launch some rockets for Team America Rocketry Challenge, (TARC). Like all other years, this year’s challenge was a huge undertaking requiring solid engineering skills. But brothers Matt (age 17) and Mark (age 13) Janecka, who are home-
schooled, and Daniel Kelton (age 16), who attends East View High School, formed a three-man team and got to work. The boys had to design, build, and launch a rocket to an altitude of 750 feet and safely bring down a raw egg in 48 to 50 seconds under a parachute 14 to 16 inches in diameter. Competing against more than 700 other teams, Matt, Daniel, and Mark qualified for the national TARC competition, where

Once upon a time . . .
Once upon a time, a very strong woodcutter asked for a job in a tim-
ber merchant, and he got it. The pay was really good and so were the work conditions. For that reason, the woodcutter was determined to do his best. His boss gave him an axe and showed him the area where he was supposed to work. The first day, the woodcutter brought 18 trees. “Congratulations,” the boss said. “Go on that way!” Very motivated by the boss’ words, the woodcutter tried harder the next day, but he only could bring 15 trees. The third day he tried e v e n harder, but he only could bring 10 trees. Day after day, he was bringing less and less trees. “I must be losing my strength,” the woodcutter thought. He went to the boss and apologized, saying that he could not understand what was going on. “When was the last time you sharpened your axe?” the boss asked. “Sharpen? I had no time to sharpen my axe. I have been very busy trying to cut trees . . . “ —Author Stephen Covey Source: 7 Habits of Highly Effective People)
The Cleaning Lady During my second month of nursing school, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the
questions, until I read the last one: “What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?” Surely, this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, darkhaired, and in her 50s, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade. “Absolutely,” said the professor. “In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say, “Hello.” I’ve never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy. Author Joanne C. Jones Source Unknown “OK” became the most popular word in the world on March 23, 1839, when it was used as a shortening of the phrase “oll korrect” which should have been spelled “all correct” in the Boston Morning Post. OK, enough trivia.

they would compete against the best 100 teams nationwide. The national competition took place in May and was held in Virginia at the Great Plains. At the competition, the three teens carefully prepped their rocket. The launch was a good one and they came out of the first round in second place. The 24 teams with the best scores from the first round now launched again in a final fly off round to determine the winners. The three boys were among the last of the 24 to launch, but when the scores came in, they couldn’t be better. First place . . . and the title of National Champions! The team and their families were ecstatic. They won a cash scholarship prize and a beautiful trophy. The team also received a paid trip to Paris, France, where they would represent the United States in
the international competition. It’s a h a p p y ending to a h a p p y story. But the story isn’t over. The competition took place during the world renowned Paris Air Show and required the team to not only launch their rocket, but also give a 10minute presentation to a panel of engineers, which would account for 40

would affect their rocket’s performance. They also had to adjust for an unexpected and critical difference in the French launching equipment. So how did they do? The Texas

West Gala set for July 20 at Lodge 47 Seaton
On Wednesday, April 17, a massive fertilizer explosion rocked the Central Texas city of West. Seven weeks have passed and the media fanfare has subsided. Even so, dozens of homes near the plant remain vacant or have boarded-up windows as families work to repair the damage caused by the explosion that sprayed debris as far as two-and-a-half miles away from the plant. The blast destroyed 150 homes and buildings, injured 200 people and killed 15, including 12 first responders who were working to put out the fire. The West Benevolence Fund was established by SPJST on the day after the explosion to address the short and long-term needs that were certain to emerge. “Initial response — primarily, from SPJST members and lodges — has been gratifying,” says SPJST Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek of Temple. “To date, more than $39,000 has been received.” A committee consisting of presidents of four West-area SPJST lodges has been working to identify projects needing attention and submitting requests to SPJST Home Office for disbursement of funds contributed to West Benevolence Fund. The first check issued was in the amount of $3,937 and was presented to West Sokol to enable the gymnastics club to purchase needed equipment that was lost when their building was destroyed.
West Gala Saturday, July 20 SPJST is partnering with RVOS Insurance and Slovacek’s Sausage to host the West Gala on Saturday, July 20 at Seaton Star Hall, courtesy of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton. Proceeds will benefit West Benevolence Fund. Tickets for the event are $50 per person and will cover an enjoyable evening of dining and entertainment. Your $50 ticket also entitles to you to one chance in the drawing. Grand prize will be a trip for two — transportation and lodging — to the Czech Republic furnished by V2 Incentives. Other prizes include five $250 Visa gift cards courtesy of RVOS Insurance (2), Gulf Coast Claims Service (2) and Purifoy and Company Insurance (1). Slovacek’s Sausage will provide a delicious barbecue dinner for attendees. Musical entertainment will be

Underwriting Support Invited “This is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to has been wanting to help get involved,” says Vanicek. Business support —in the amount of $250 or more — will designate businesses as an event underwriter in the printed program as well as provide the business with promotional consideration leading up to the event. All prior donors will also be listed in the gala program. “Most importantly, your generous support will help to ensure that West Benevolence Fund makes a significant impact for the residents and community of West,” says Vanicek.
Auction and Prizes SPJST Home Office in Temple is also collecting merchandise for the live auction, silent auction, and bucket drawings that will be held on the night of the West Gala. Prize donors will be listed in the event program, and the merchandise you give will be on display through the event. Gift baskets are invited; however, any suitable gift item or service will be greatly appreciated. Gift baskets and other items are being collected at SPJST Home Office at 520 North Main Street in Temple. Upon notification, SPJST will make arrangements for pick up. To reserve your gala tickets or for more information on how to give an
item or to schedule a pick-up, call Debbie Klinkovsky at SPJST Home Office at (254) 773-1575.
Pre-Gala Party Friday, July 19 There will be a pre-gala party on Friday night, July 19 at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall with 50s and 60s musical entertainment provided by Johnny and the Convertibles of Houston, Texas. There will be a freewill admission, and all ages are invited. The entertainment is being sponsored by Gulf Coast Claims Service, who along with RVOS, continues to play a major role in the West rebuilding effort. The West Gala weekend is being held in conjunction with SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton’s annual barbecue cookoff. For cook-off registration information, contact SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton President Edwin Pechal at (254) 985-2282 or (254) 984-2255. “The road to recovery for the residents of West is and has only just begun,” says Vanicek. “Our sincere thanks to everyone who is joining hands to make a positive difference for the community of West.”

Hrabal family
The 41st annual Hrabal family reunion will be held Saturday, July 13, 2013, at SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood Hall, located three miles east of West, Texas, on FM 2114. The hall will open at 10 a.m. Socializing will take place until dinner is served at 1 p.m. Snacks and drinks will be furnished and served all day. There will also be games for the youngsters. A business meeting will be held at 3 p.m. followed by an auction and prize drawing. Donations of prizes for the auction and prize drawing are greatly appreciated. There will also be a door prize. Bring your pictures, scrapbooks, or anything that you would like to share with others. A goodbye breakfast will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 14 at the Grille Restaurant in the Waco Hilton. Our heritage has strong ties and roots with the city of West. The explosion at West has placed its mark on family members and friends of our reunion. The West Volunteer Fire Department lost three fire trucks in the explosion. It would be appropriate for the Hrabal family reunion to make a donation to this organization. Those who plan to attend, bring extra cash. Overbid items in the auction, or make a donation to the reunion. Those who cannot attend, please consider making a donation to the Hrabal family reunion. Note on your check that it is for the West Volunteer Fire Department. We will make the donation in the name of the Hrabal family reunion.

State King’s Notebook: Awesome Carnival Magic Cruise
LEFT PHOTO: Pictured left to right are Kandace Stone, Jerry Pechal, Trevor Coots, and Chris Zavodny. Trevor is a member of Lodge 24, Cyclone; and Kandace, Jerry, and Chris are members of Lodge 47,
Dear Readers, I have had an awesome past week. My parents took me on a seven-day cruise that debarked from Galveston! Our first two days were “a day at sea.” Then, our first port was Montego Bay, Jamaica. We got off the ship and took a taxi around town. We went to a private beach that was just beautiful. The next day, we ported at Grand Cayman, Cayman Island. We got off, loaded on a bus, and went to Stingray City Beach. They took us out about three miles in the ocean, and we
swam with the stingrays. The stingrays were wild, so they cut off the stingers. The ocean was just so clear; it looked like you were in a swimming pool. The water was only four feet deep. The stingrays were just calm as ever and would swim right between your legs! We then loaded up and went to Tiki Beack—aka the clearest, most beautiful beach I have ever seen! We loaded back on to the ship and headed to Cozumel, Mexico. We loaded off the ship the next morning and picked up our rental vehicle. We headed to

the other side of the island where there is no running water or electricity! We went to a restaurant called Mezcalitos. The best thing about this place was that it was only our group there. We were there for hours and headed back to the ship. The next day was “a day at sea.” This was the first cruise that I got to gamble on and it wasn’t too bad; I actually did good! Seven of my former Rogers High School classmates and their families were also on this cruise for graduation. This was a cruise that will forever be in my memory.
Last State Royalty Event I also had an awesome time at my last royalty event which was the Fourth of July Parade in Belton. I’m really going to miss being a part of the royalty court. I have had a blast this whole year and would not trade a second of it for the world. I have had an awesome and fun duke, queen, and her duchess. God bless, Jerry Pechal 2012-2013 State King Lodge 47, Seaton —SPJST—

Lodge 18, Elgin youth: Express game is cool
Dear Věstník, I went to a game at Dell Diamond on May 19, 2013, to see Round Rock Express play, and it was very cool. We saw awesome hits and catches. This is the third game to see, and I love it. I would love to see more games like this. I can’t wait for District Two Youth Achievement Day (YAD) and camp! I’m so excited for camp - to go meet new friends and learn new things. Dear Věstník, I like horses, and I like my dogs. I like to say how much fun I had at the Dell Diamond game on May 19, 2013. I liked my song that was playing on the big screen television and loved the popcorn. I liked all the hits from the players. I won two tickets to go to another game - I loved that! I also got a poster. Can we go again? Thank you, Kimberley West —SPJST—

Dear Věstník, I went to Dell Diamond with my youth club and the rest of SPJST on Sunday, May 19, 2013. The Round Rock Express played the Colorado Sky Sox. The Express lost. There were extra innings, 3 to 1. They played a good game. They had lots of little events for the kids to do between innings. It was really hot, and I got a tan. It was a very exciting game and would like to do this again. J.B. Anderson —SPJST—

Lodge 25, Ennis youth shares summer fun
Dear Vestnik Readers, I have been busy lately. This is me in my Czech at costume Polka Festival in Ennis. I got a new haircut. I had my competition for gymnastics in Sokol, and I received second place in my age group. I went to Uncle Tim’s and Aunt Kimberly’s for his birthday. It was a lot of fun. We went swimming. Adam and Trey were there, too! They were both doing flips off the diving board. They threw their sister Sara in the pool. Adam was being silly. He kept on sneaking in our pictures. I was eating Cool Whip out of the container, and Momma caught me.

Our group talent for YAD was the Pontoon. We sang. We dressed in summer clothes. We built a pontoon and decorated it. Then, we had to find a way to get it in the door at the hall. We finally did in the back. We got second place for our talent. I will be going to state because I got first place in sewing and on my science project. Mima and I made a pillow together. We put pretty ribbon on it, too. My science project was Acrctic Fox. Love, Misty, age 9 —SPJST—
Lodge 25, Ennis youth shares exciting activities
about school, I’ll tell you about band. Our band is one of the best middle school bands in the nation, and it is such a great honor to call myself a second chair clarinet player. In all the competitions we go to, we get first divison (it’s the highest ranking you can get). Also, in our last competition, we got a sweepstakes award which means we got first division on everything. Another great honor that the Ennis Junior High Band offered me was the opportunity to play bass clarinet. I told the band directors I would play it, so I’m looking forward to playing bass clarinet this upcoming school year. Now that I explained everything about school to you, let’s talk about summer. The weekend I got out of school, we went to Belton Lake because my mama had to attend a nurses’ conference. So why not tag along? While Mama was at the conference, my daddy, Misty (my sister), and I went and did a lot of cool stuff. My absolute favorite thing we did was visit the SPJST Home Office and the Czech Herritage Museum in Temple. The museum was so amazing. I got to see how my ancestors lived, and many other exciting things. My favorite thing at the museum was looking at all of the musical instruments and polka bands. I never knew that so many polka bands existed. You definitely have to make your way down to the Czech Heritage Museum in Temple to
Dear Fellow People Who Read The Vestnik, As y’all know, I have been very busy. I’ve been doing everything from receiving my STARR test scores to enjoying my gorgeous new Czech costume. By the way, I apologize for not writng sooner. Everytime I sat down to write a letter, something popped up that I needed to do. Many people have told me to write so I finally got time to do it. So first of all, I got my STARR test scores back, and just like I said, I’ll tell you the scores I got. Like I explained in my previous letter, the STARR test is pretty dang hard. So you know how I thought I would do somewhat good on the writing? Well, writing was my lowest score. I passed all of my tests though. In fact, I got commended on two out of three. On my writing, I was so close to getting commended. I only needed to get two more questions right, and I would have been commended. Although I was kind of crushed by this, on the bright side, I was commended on my math and reading tests. I was really proud of myself. Speaking of test scores, as y’all know, we have to take final exams at the end of the school year. I don’t mean to brag on myself, but I think I did pretty good. In athletics, I got a 100; in leadership, I got a 100; in math, I got a 95; in reading, I made a 100; in band, I made a 100; in history, I got a 100; and in science, i got a 94. Studying pays off—believe me. Also, all year, I made all As. Like I said, I’m not try- TOP PHOTOS: My gorgeous, new Czech costume. see all the mind-blowing and just flat out amazing things. Also, there was a little portion of the musem in the Home Office, and that was really, really cool, too. It had a big wall with all the veterans that are a part of SPJST. It was really cool because I found my Grandpa! The museum and everything was fun, and I gained a lot of knowledge about my Czech past, but the best thing about my visit was seeing Melanie. For y’all that don’t know, Melanie is the editor for the Vestnik. Without all of her hard work, the Vestnik wouldn’t even be possible. She is one of the most nice, beautiful, funny, and supportive people I’ve ever met. So next time you see her, make sure you thank her for all of her hard work. After all of that excitement, it was time for YAD. It was really fun because I got to see Bessie, Lynda, Melanie, and the new youth director Lynette. I also met a new friend, Zoe, who’s the new youth director’s daughter. Along with meeting a new friend, I got to see all my old ones. Speaking of my friends, a lot of them ran for queen, and they all did great! I’m so excited that I get to run for queen next year and follow in my friend’s footsteps! So back to this year’s YAD . . . I performed “Cups” by Anna Kendrick for individual talent. For group talent, me and some of my friends performed “Pontoon” by Little Big Town. YAD

was definitely fun this year, and I can’t wait until next year. Talking about other years, this weekend was my Uncle Tim’s birthday, and you know Czech people like to party. At his party, we went swimming and got to spend time with our cousins, Aunt Kimberly, and Uncle Tim. For his birthday, Aunt Kimberly gave him a speaker dock thingy, and that thing is really legit. Like, I’m not kidding, it’s really cool. Also, he got a sound system from Aunt Kimberly, and from us he got a lot of tools and work boots. His birthday was really fun! By the way, this is kind of off subject, but my birthday is July 13! I’m so excited! So anyway, you better put on your dancing cowboy boots because I’m about to talk about my favorite time of year. That’s right—Polka Fest! It turns out that I got to ride the SPJST Float so YAY! At Polka Fest, what outfit is better to wear than a Czech kroj? Well, my Czech costume isn’t just a regular one. I’m talking, my kroj is like the Holy Grail of Czech costumes. It beams with perfection. It has a brown poofy skirt with lots of pink ribbon and shiny ribbon on it. The vest is hot pink with gold ribbon. The shirt is white with long, pink ribbon on the sleeves with pink and white ribbon. The apron is sparkly lace. My shoes are some sparkly, brown cowboy boots, and my flower halo has pink and white flowers and long pink, white, and sparkly ribbon. It. Is. Perfect. I definitely danced till I could hardly stand anymore. It was so fun! I literally can’t wait till Westfest and next years Polka Fest so I can do it all over again! So from the STARR test scores to wearing my new Czech costume, I am one happy girl. I’ll continue to carry on my happiness by going to SPJST camp and my birthday. This might be a little bit early, but I’ll also carry on my happiness by knowing I can be an LIT and run for queen next year. Until next time! (: Your Polka Dancing Girl, April Dvorak, age 12 —SPJST—

have teamed up to remind parents, coaches and athletes to play safely when they’re playing sports. A child or young adult’s mouth and face can be easily injured if the proper precautions are not used while participating in sports or recreational activities. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than half of the seven million sports- and recreation-related injuries that occur each year are sustained by children as young as five years old. In 2012, the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation forecasted that more than three million teeth would be knocked out in youth sporting events. They also reported that athletes who don’t wear mouth guards are 60 times more likely to damage their teeth. Yet, in a survey commissioned by the American Association of Orthodontists, 67 percent of parents admitted that their children do not wear a mouth guard during organized sports. At a time when a good football helmet or hockey stick may cost a few hundred dollars, mouth guards remain inexpensive pieces of protective equipment. Mouth guards save teeth and protect the jaw. When a mouth guard is working properly, it will hold teeth in place, resist tearing and allow

Lodge 183, Arlington Youth Tapped into Top AHS Choir
On May 31, 2013, Lodge 183, Arlington Youth Club member Katelyn Daniel was honored to be tapped into the top choir Colt Choral at Arlington High School. “This is a big achievement for me,” Katelyn says, “ . . . and I cannot believe that the day has finally come.” Katelyn, right, is pictured with Kendall Quirk, the one who tapped her on such a special day.
for normal speech and breathing. Rely on a dental professional to recommend a properly fitted mouth guard for a vast array of sporting activities. Here are some additional sports safety tips to consider to reduce young athletes’ risk of injury. * Wear a mouth guard when playing contact sports. Mouth guards can help
prevent injury to a person’s jaw, mouth and teeth, and they are significantly less expensive than the cost to repair an injury. Dentists and dental specialists can make customized mouth guards to provide the best fit. Other less-expensive options are the boil and bite mouth guards, which are softened in boiling water to fit the mouth, and stock mouth guards, which are ready-
to-wear but may not fit as well as their customized counterparts.
* Wear a helmet. Helmets absorb the energy of an impact and help prevent damage to the head.
* Wear protective eyewear. Eyes are extremely vulnerable to damage, especially when playing sports. * Wear a face shield. Rely on a face shield to avoid damage to the delicate bones around the eyes, nose and jaw. Hockey pucks, basketballs and racquetballs can cause severe facial damage to athletes of any age.
Summertime is an opportunity to engage in recreational sporting activities. Athletes of all ages should wear the appropriate safety gear while competing to greatly reduce their risk of injury. —SPJST—

• Letters to Bibbie •
This article is one of a series of “Letters to Bibbie, ” written by Ivo Marek to his distant relative Vickie (Bibbie) Cooper of Granger, Texas. Ivo and his parents live in Choceň, Czech Republic. Ivo is an engineer by profession and an accomplished weaver and textile artist. In addition, his hobbies are gardening, cooking, and fine-tuning his English.
Dear Bibbie, I will write about the Czech state anthem “Kde domov můj . . . ” today, which is beautiful text and melody. It belongs to state symbols of the Czech Republic. By law, the national anthem is to be played and sung only in dignified way. It plays and sings at state holidays and at other occasions, when it is usual. The song comes from the drama of Josef Kajetán Tyl, Fidlovačka aneb Žádný hněv a žádná rvačka (no anger and no melee), first played in Prague 1834. František Škroup composed the music to it. The song popularized quickly and became national song. The song “Kde domov můj” became popular in 1920, commitment music sound of the anthem was set up 1927. First stanza of the named song creates the state anthem of CR. Text and music register of the state anthem CR became attachment of authorized law. One of the main sources of information for this letter was for me the link:
Flower apple.
Video Czech National Anthem 2008: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qn8 7PI9K99M The Video contains 3 various music records of anthem, photographs from the CR and next Czech symbols e.g. State Flag and State Coat-of-Arms. You open the Link on the PC, watt open the video and listen the anthem. Josef Kajetán Tyl (1808-1856) was the Czech playwright, journalist and writer. He studied grammar school in Prague and he did not finish study of Philosophical faculty UK. He worked in Prague as an accountant in an army office. He presented to theater and journalism in leisure time. He found Kajetánské theatre. His target was to create the Czech drama. He translated theatre plays once, than he played them. His theatre`s play Fidlovačka was brought out in the Estate theater 1834, where the song Kde domov můj the first time sung was. JKT married with the actress and woman-singer Magdalena Forchheim 1839. First child born them died, and Magdalena after the hard birth could not have next children. JKT than established love relation with Magdalena`s younger sister Anna Rajská and lived next with both sisters in a love triangle. Anna bore him 7 children. JKT was the organizer of the Czech culture life and was named “lover of the Czech Nation”. He died in poverty in Pilsen. František Jan Škroup (1801-1862) was the Czech musician, conductor and

music composer. He studied on the grammar school in Queen`s Burgh; he studied philosophy and laws on KU. He was named band-master of the Estate theatre in 1827th year. He composed the music to the song “Where is my home,” what the first time sang blind beggar and violoncellist Maresh in farce of J. K. Tyl with the name Fidlovačka aneb Žádný hněv a žádná rvačka. (Fidlovačka or No Anger and No Brawl). FJŠ died 1862; he is buried on Reformation cemetery in Rotterdam in Holland. Fraternally, Ivo. ••••••••

V Praze vystudoval gymnázium a studium Filosofické fakulty UK nedokončil. Pracoval v Praze jako účetní

První dítě se jim narodilo mrtvé a Magdalena po těžkém porodu další děti mít nemohla. JKT pak navázal milostný poměr s Magdaleninou mladší sestrou Annou Rajskou a žil dále se dvěma sestrami v manželském trojúhelníku. Anna mu porodila 7 dětí. JKT byl organizátorem českého kulturního života a byl nazýván miláčkem českého národa. Zemřel v bídě v Plzni. František Jan Škroup (*1801, +1862) byl český hudebník, dirigent a hudební skladatel.
