uly has been an extremely busy month in SPJST! It’s been filled with summer youth camps, district youth achievement days, Fourth of July parades, Supreme Lodge meeting, local lodge and youth club meetings and events, fundraiser for Danny and Lori Slack Family, and the West Gala. Wow! So much has been accomplished in the past 30 days! Special thanks to all of our members and friends who have supported and attended these events. The spaghetti lunch and raffle for Danny and Lori Slack and their family was a grand success. Lori serves as New Business/Certificate Issue Technician at the Home Office. When her husband Danny was seriously injured in a car accident in May, several Home Office staff members stepped up to help their SPJST sister with the massive medical expenses that the family was facing from Danny’s hospital stay and surgeries. And, Lori and Danny were expecting their third child just weeks after the accident happened. In just a short amount of time, a team of staff members pulled together a spaghetti lunch along with a raffle that included 20 nice, donated prizes. Staff members, with the assistance of District Two Director Jesse Pospisil and wife Linda, organized and carried out the fundraiser. Thanks to enormous support from many individuals and businesses (complete list appears on page 11), the event raised $5,651.98 for the Slack family. Thank you to everyone who donated money, prizes, and desserts; browned meat for spaghetti; sold tickets; and helped with the event. What a team! Special thanks to Vestnik readers who sent in donations and sweet notes of support for the family . . . along with all of the prayers. Danny is recovering at home and

is doing better. Baby Jesse Allan was born on June 19 and was 8 pounds, 5 ounces and 19 inches long. Lori and Jesse are doing great. The family expresses its sincere appreciation to each and every person who has prayed for them and donated to them.
West Gala Success The West Gala was held Saturday, July 20 at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall. What a success! Thanks to everyone who donated, helped, bought tickets, and supported this wonderful event. See a summary on pages 13 and 14 of this week’s Vestnik. Special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Roskey for donating their grand prize to the West Benevolence Fund. What philanthropists they are.

Floor Chairman Gene Pavelka gave his report. We discussed whether we were benefiting from advertising our Saturday night dances in the Waco Tribune Herald. The cost is pretty high. carried. We will continue to post on Facebook.com at Elk Hall, so please “like us” and check dance schedules and other activities there. We discussed giving away prizes for the Saturday night dances on Facebook also. This was to see if we could boost attendance at our Saturday night dances. A motion was made by Gene Edward Pavelka to give away two free door passes and $10 at the bar. The motion was seconded by Fred Kubitza, Jr., and the motion carried as well. There was some discussion on getting Jason Breton to remodel the ceiling on the front side of the hall so it would match the bar area.
Gene Edward Pavelka made a motion to have our work day on August 17. We will have our regular hall clean-up and lodge meeting as well. Walter Kubitza seconded the motion, and it carried. We had one birthday in July, and that was Walter Kubitza on July 16. Happy birthday, Brother Walter! We had 10 members and three guests present at the meeting. Lodge 187 Round Rock members enjoy hats/caps fun
Hello! The July meeting started with entertainment by Jennave Fuchs. She brought in an assortment of hats and caps for a game. Each person picked a number. It was a fun game and many made up some funny stories. David “Red” Oman discussed all the upcoming events with the lodge.

Ennis Sewing Circle
Ennis Sewing Circle met on Thursday, July 11, 2013. Ann Clagett, Irene Prachyl, Ginny Svehlak, Martha Ritchey, Dorothy J. Kudrna, and I arrived at 10 a.m. I want to send a big thank you to Chad Wester and a couple of young fellows who set up all our tables and chairs, which was so nice. They were there setting up tables and chairs in the hall. As everyone arrived, each person displayed show-and-tell items and all sale items. We had many nice things for sale, and we really did well on the sale. Thank you, everyone, who helped make it a success. At noon, President Irene led us in grace, and we all said the “Our Father” prayer for all our members. We then enjoyed a delicious lunch. As always, everything was great. Thank you all for the food, the set up, and clean up. I’m sorry I never get your names. After lunch, President Irene called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all 22 members present and two guests — Jerry Zmolek and Joe Ehrenberger. Vice President Ginny read the minutes of our last meeting for Secretary Dolores who was on vacation. Treasurer Dorothy Bobalek gave her report; both were approved as read. Ginny also read an article, “Expectations of Life” which was enjoyed by all. President Irene read the names of our July birthday celebrants - Dorothy Valek, Victoria Vlk, Dorothy Bobalek, and Joan Strunc. Sunshine Lady Eleanora fell on July 4 and went to the doctor. Nothing was broken, but she was unable to walk and drive her car. She is doing better now and said she may drive herself to the doctor on Wednesday. We were glad to hear all is going well. I thought we were going to quilt for Ann in August, but I was told on the phone today that we will quilt for Dorothy J. Kudrna. President Irene announced feathers are being collected and saved for us. I can’t remember who, but will tell you later when we make pastry brushes. We all are excited about that. President Irene made and handed out longtime member awards to our longtime members. They are: Sadie Kubin - 55 years; Anne Zabojnik - 46 years; Georgie Morales - 46 years; Bertha Podhrasky - 38 years; Ella Mae Zmolek - 35; Sidney Bridewell - 27; and Mildred Trlica - 25 years. She also had a list of our past member mothers
and their present daughter members. How neat that was! I didn’t get the list of names, but I will next time. Irene is really doing a great job. Irene also asked for the address membership committee to try and have guidelines ready for approval at the September meeting. Victoria Vlk was the first raffle winner. She picked the baby quilt. Other winners were Geraldine Valek, Irene Prachyl, Lil Kosarek, Dorothy Valek,
and Maggie Holy. Sorry, I didn’t get what each one picked. Can you believe, I was the 50-50 dollar game winner! It was good to see Ella Mae and Jerry Zmolek. Jerry was in the hospital, but he is doing well now. It was good to see him. President Irene thanked all for coming, for the food, the sale items, and show-and-tell items. She announced how much cash was made and thanked everyone again.

Show-and-Tell Items Ginny Svehlak brought a blouse or shirt that she embroidered the front and back with pretty flowers, but Ginny said she never wore it; I don’t really know why. She told of when her mother had passed away that the girls she worked with started her crocheting to keep her mind busy. She showed six pretty afghans, a sweater, and hat. She told of the hats she crocheted for a lady she worked with. A friend of this lady lost her brother Jack Lummus during World War II, and it was written about in our Ennis paper. The sister of Jack Lummus was asked to christen a ship in his honor, and she wanted to wear one of those hats. Ginny was more than happy to crochet her one. The picture of the christening and Ginny’s hat were also in the paper. Dorothy Prachyl showed a little gold box that her mother always kept on her dresser. It was at least 100 years old. Dorothy Valek showed a big oval picture of her great-grandparents John and Catherine Sonka Patril, which is also Irene Prachyl, Libbie, Lil, and my great-grandparents. She showed a picture album from Bardwell School dating back to 1941. I was in the first grade that year. There was a beautiful picture of the Blessed Mother with dried flowers around the picture under the glass that her uncle Bill Kubelka mailed his mother, Dorothy’s grandmother, while he was serving in the war. At that time, Dorothy was living with her grandmother and walked to pick up the mail. That day, the picture came and has been on the wall at the grandparents’ home ever since. The picture is still just as pretty as it was when it came. She had a postcard that her uncle Bill Kubelka sent her from Africa while serving there. Dorothy also had a picture of her grandmother Patril Kubelka. Pat Fowler had World War I and World War II picture annual books, which were very interesting; a twofoot long box from a strudel they purchased when on a trip to New Braunfels. Boy, I have never seen a strudel that long; a two-foot doll dressed in her daughter Julie’s first kroj that she made for her when she was two years old. She also had a picture of Julie dressed in the kroj. Lil Kosarek brought her first volume of her stamp collection. She has about four books. They asked the collection when her boys were home, and she has continued it. It really was a nice book. Someone asked about certain stamps that she had. They had if

she had the Elvis Presley stamp, and she does. Irene Prachyl brought her blue and white dish collection, different bowls, salt and pepper shakers, and many other pieces. All were collected from Czech Republic, England, Germany, Poland, and other places.
Other News Dorothy J. Kudrna attended the high school graduation of her greatgranddaughter Marissa Bailey from Midlothian. Marissa is the granddaughter of Glenn and Alvoy Kudrna, and Judy Kudrna. I know I have made many mistakes today, so I want to apologize now. There were so many things going on that day, and I had my great-granddaughter Gracie Morales with me. She was good, but I just couldn’t keep my mind straight. We will meet August 8. We will quilt, have lunch, meeting, and 50-50 dollar game. We hope to see you all. Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST—
Fort Worth Friendship Club
On Wednesday, July 3, 2013, several members met at St. Thomas Church for our trip to the Christian Arts Museum while several members met us there. We went to view the lifesize wax figures of the interpretation of Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting of “The Last Supper.” Everyone enjoyed the viewing, audio, and presentation of comments by one of the volunteers. Afterwards, we drove over to Golden Corral for our annual eating-out luncheon sponsored by the Club. It felt like we had a visit with Jesus and at the luncheon, Joan Wilcox led us in the blessing before lunch. It was a fun day. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to July celebrants—Kathy Ormsbee, Stanley Krenek, Rebecca Getty, and Jennifer Miller. May you all have many more. Stanley is a July 4 celebrant and was the only one in attendance. Kathy Ormsbee has been absent from the last several meetings, and it was learned that she had a stroke. Kathy, our thoughts and prayers are with you and get well soon. Tracy Horn missed our July social. Her niece’s husband passed away, and she went to the funeral in Bryan on a
Monday. Then on the following Sunday, she again went to Bryan to attend the 50th wedding anniversary of her brother and sister-in-law, Anton and Willie Ann Luza. Tracy said she really enjoyed all the good food and fellowship, and she especially enjoyed seeing her nieces from Arizona and California. I love hearing stories about Tracy’s great-grandtwins who will be three years old soon. This time, they got into nail polish and painted everything in sight—themselves, their clothes, the walls, rugs, etc. Congratulations to JoAnn Wilcox. Her son James Albert Wilcox, III was ordained a priest recently. We all know JoAnn is most proud. Lorraine Cross celebrated her 90th birthday with a surprise birthday party hosted by her daughter, Jeanette Lee, at the Haltom Recreation Center. Those of us that sit with Lorraine at the Friendship Club—Lydia Alholm, Paula Arsenault, Debbie Skrasek, Helen Skrasek, and myself—were invited. It was a beautiful party and a complete surprise to Lorraine. Sympathy goes out to Mary Ann Kozel on the death of her niece, Sister Gregoria, who was a resident at Nazareth Convent in Victoria, Texas. This was the first time I knew Mary Ann had a nun in the family. On June 8, Mary Ann and her family enjoyed the Popp reunion in Garwood, Texas, which was held at the “home place.” She said the house must be over 80 years old, remodeled a couple of times, but still in wonderful condition. Mary Ann said she enjoyed being with family. All of us were sorry to hear of Rose Ann Spann’s auto accident with her three grandchildren. They were traveling home from the lake in daughter Debbie’s car when they had a blowout. The car then hit a guard rail, ran into a ditch, hit a tree, and flipped over. Grandson Joey was the only one injured—he suffered a broken left leg and broken right foot. He is home with casts on both legs and in a wheelchair. I understand the casts should be off before school starts. Rose Ann said that whenever she takes the children anywhere, they always say, “Dear Lord, take care of us.” Guess now she will have to say, “Dear Lord, take care of us and the car” as Debbie’s car was totaled. I was sorry to hear about Joey, but thankfully, no one else was injured. Joey, get well soon! Betty Landsfeld certainly enjoyed the first-ever Liska family reunion in Weimar, Texas. She especially en-
joyed her great-grandchildren from Milwaukee. Liskas came from all over the United States. My sympathy goes out to Emil Milan, his daughter Debbie, and son David on the death of Sally, Emil’s wife, who was a special friend of mine. Sally, you can now rest in peace, and you shall be missed by all of your family and friends. Helen Skrasek made a short visit to Oklahoma City to visit with son Ron and his wife. They did go to the casino one day . . . apparently not big winners as nothing was said. They went out to eat and just stayed in and visited. It’s kind of late for get well wishes to Marilyn Llewellyn who had shoulder replacement surgery as I hear she is doing great and is even driving the car now. Anyway, Marilyn, so glad that everything went well for you. I was so glad to hear from Elsie Anders who is now home. Three months ago, she had surgery, got an infection, was in the hospital, in and out of rehab, but is now home. She told me that she is even able to drive her car in Crowley where she lives, but does not venture out too far. She talked about going to the Novy/Haskovec wedding in Ennis, and how much she enjoyed seeing everyone. My sister Lil and I attended the National Sokol Slet/Sports Festival in Milwaukee in June. We traveled by Amtrak along with Jerry and Henrietta Milan, Gay and Darrell Williams, and the 16 young gymnasts, parents, and coaches. Carolyn Cleveland and Elisa Werner and friend joined us later as they flew. It is most comfortable traveling by Amtrak. We were next to the club car and spent many hours playing cards and dominoes. The dining car was next so everything was most convenient. The food was good and service was excellent. Since we were traveling in a group of 34, we were able to load first. We were met in Chicago and escorted to our train to Milwaukee. Total trip took about 26 hours, and the train does “toot” at every crossing—day and night. Our young gymnasts ages six through 14 did extremely well. One of our gymnasts scored a perfect 10 in two events being the bars and vault . . . only 10s in the whole competition. Jerry, Henrietta, Rome, Carolyn, Elisa and I participated in the “All Sokol” final number in the program along with the children in which the field was full. I don’t know the count. I ran into Theresa after mass on Sunday, and she was so excited to tell

me she was taking Sister Frances (the baseball nun) to the Rangers game on the day of her birthday. She said “they” know it is Sister Frances’ birthday, and she is sure it will be a special day. But, I didn’t get the date, so all of you that watch the games on television, look for them. Our next meeting will be August 7, and it will be back at the St. Thomas Parish Dining Room. As usual, bring a dish to share for lunch. As always, fried chicken will be contributed by the Club. Hopefully, our “Chicken Man Stanley” will pick it up! Stay cool, and see you then. West Gala Raises $43,000 for West Benevolence Fund
Dear Brothers and Sisters, A massive fertilizer explosion rocked the Central Texas city of West on April 17, 2013. Dozens of homes near the plant have been torn down or remain vacant as families work to repair the damage. In addition to destroying 200 houses and buildings, the blast had a devastating effect on three of the city’s four school buildings. Approximately 200 people were injured and 15 were killed, including 12 first responders who were working to extinguish the fire. Last Saturday’s West Gala hosted by Slovacek’s Sausage, RVOS, and SPJST at Seaton Star Hall provides us with a wonderful example of how SPJST members and friends of the Society have been joining hands to assist the West community and its residents. Please allow me to express my sincere thanks to all of our sponsors for working so closely together on this effort and to all of our event underwriters, prize donors, and last but not least — the 450 men, women, boys, and girls who turned out to support the event. Thanks, too, to Gala emcee Alfred Vrazel who presided over festivities which attracted celebrants from throughout the community, state, and
as far away as California. The barbecued chicken and sausage dinner—as well as before- and after-dinner snacks and desserts—were furnished courtesy of Slovacek’s Sausage of West. Musical entertainment was provided courtesy of the Ennis Czech Boys and Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six. Saturday’s event raised more than $43,000 for the West Benevolence Fund. That amount, combined with what the fund had received previously from SPJST lodges, members, and friends, increased the West Benevolence Fund donation tally to more than $85,000. All of us encounter problems and challenges from time to time. At times — as in the case of the West explosion — those situations can take on monumental proportions. Maintaining close and personal relationships with each other and those who are affected represent an important part of the healing and rebuilding process. Events like last Saturday’s West Gala bring all us — men, women, boys, and girls — closer together as a community of friends and not merely nameless faces. In Memoriam
In Memory of Frances Sparks
Frances Podhrasky Sparks, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother passed away on Sunday morning, July 7, 2013, at her home after a brief hospital stay. She was born in Dallas, Texas, on December 8, 1922, to Julius and Frances Podhrasky, both of whom were immigrants from Frances Sparks the area now known as the Czech Republic, and who landed at the Port of Galveston in the early 1900s. She is survived by husband John Sparks of 61 years and children Karen Sherga of Arlington, Texas, Robin Sparks of Brooklyn, New York, and Glenn Sparks of Rockwall, Texas. Frances had five grandchildren, the first born being Audrey Sherga, who preceded her in death, and four surviving grandchildren Stephanie Kearns, Hayley Sherga, Ronald M. Sherga, Jr., and Nicholas H. Sparks. She is also survived by brother Julius Podhrasky of Dallas. Frances attended Forest Avenue High School in Dallas, Texas, for which she had many fond memories. After high school she began her career working as a secretary at National Lead and then General Plumbing where she met and married John Sparks. She continued to advance her education by taking evening classes at Metropolitan Business College in Dallas. Throughout her working years, she continued to expand her business, finance, and accounting knowledge by taking business courses. Frances was a lifelong learner and enjoyed learning about history, nature, science, as well as people and their cultures. As a young woman, Frances joined Sokol, SPJST Lodge 130, Dallas, and later, Dallas Czech Circle of Women, and she had recently received her 70th year membership pin. Sokol is a fraternal society for friendship, promotion of physical fitness through gymnastics, and social activities within the Czech community. Frances spoke fluent Czech which she learned at home as a child. Frances and her husband John started Sparks Oil Company where
she was an integral part of the planning and operations of the business, serving both as secretary and treasurer of the corporation, until they sold the business at retirement. Frances lived in many areas of Texas, and in addition to Dallas, she had lived at Cedar Creek Lake near Athens, Texas, Sun City in Georgetown, Texas, Heritage Ranch in Fairview, Texas, and finally at Autumn Leaves in the Casa Linda area of Dallas overlooking White Rock Lake with a beautiful view that she loved. Frances always loved to travel. After retiring, she traveled to Moravia in the Czech Republic to visit her father’s birthplace. She also enjoyed ocean cruises to Alaska, Mexico, the Caribbean, Hawaii, and the Panama Canal. Frances took an adventurous train trip to Copper Canyon in Mexico. Some of her favorite places to visit in the United States were Colorado, New Mexico, California, Utah, and many places in Texas. Frances was a member of Allen Senior Citizens’ Recreational Center, and Nifty Needles and Red Hats at Heritage Ranch where she resided before her relocation to Autumn Leaves. Card games with friends was also something Frances enjoyed doing regularly, as well as ceramic classes, needle work, sewing, and other crafts. She attended church services at Autumn Leaves where she resided, and also led an exercise class there up until very shortly before her passing. Friends and residents at Autumn Leaves marveled at Frances’ energy and vibrancy. Frances was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to all. She will be dearly missed. Memorial donations may be made to the Cornelia de Lange Syndrome Foundation, 302 W. Main Street No. 100, Avon, Connecticut, 06001 or to any charity of the donor’s choice. —SPJST—

State Youth Director shares August updates
Dear SPJST Youth Leaders, It is amazing how fast July 2013 has come and gone! By the time you read this newsletter, we will have celebrated the achievements of our SPJST youth at State Youth Achievement Day and celebrated 50 years of SPJST crowning a State Royalty Court. I am very proud of the number of youth that participate in our youth program. SPJST youth camps have come to an end. I have had a great time with all the youth, District Youth Counselors, their assistants, youth leaders, and chaperones. SPJST has always felt like family to me, and this summer I feel so blessed to have grown that family more than I could have imagined. I have many memories of the high ropes course and riding the inner tubes on Lake Fayette with the youth. Besides the usual activities at camp such as high ropes, archery, swimming, boating . . . each district provided their youth with other unique activities such as decorating bandanas, Coke floats, shaving cream fights, and a greased up pig to chase. This is what makes my job a lot of fun — having the opportunity to see how creative our District Youth Counselors and the Assistant District Youth Counselors are! I applaud each of you for the time and devotion you give our youth and youth program. Corpus Christi Get Away! Good times await you at the Corpus Christi Get Away on August 9 to 11 for a fun-filled weekend. We will again

Fall District Youth Counselors’ Meeting The 2013 fall District Youth Counselors’ (DYC) meeting will be September 28 and 29 in El Campo, Texas. During the meeting, DYCs talk about guidelines for 2014’s YAD: constructed items (plastic project), foods (candies), and photography (flags). We also discuss camp, next year’s theme, as well as any additions to the youth club handbook that may help things run a little smoother. Youth leaders, if you have any items you would like your DYC to discuss at our meeting, please submit your request in writing to your DYC. This way your voices can be heard and addressed. District One families vacation together
We work together . . . we serve together . . . and we vacation together. On July 7, six District One families departed for a Caribbean vacation upon the Carnival cruise ship “The Magic.” Our group of 28, included the Russells of Lodge 13, Dime Box; the Gaases of Lodge 17, New Tabor; and Lodge 9, Snook families of the Kovars, Lewises, Orsaks, and Shelfers. We were also joined by our 4-H friends, the Monroes from Caldwell. Our group of 14 adults and 14 “kids” included District One leaders and officers, lodge leaders and officers, State King and Queen, State Merit Winners, and SPJST Grant and Scholarship winners. You could say we represented SPJST on The Magic!

Our trip was inspired by three graduating seniors who thought they needed to cruise before starting college. Thanks to Robert Lewis, Zachary Shelfer, and Brittanie Gaas for coming up with the great idea. In addition to celebrating with our graduates, we celebrated three birthdays while on the ship. Hayden Kovar turned 16, Josef Orsak turned 20, and Grace Lewis, the baby of our group, celebrated the 12th birthday. I know everyone in the restaurant probably thought we were just making up birthdays because it seemed we celebrated every night. Our first port was in Jamaica. It was hard to believe that we got on a boat in Galveston, and we were stepping off of the boat in Jamaica. We went to the Falls at Ocho Rios and climbed up a 600-foot waterfall. It was not easy, and I was a little worried about my mom and dad, but we all made it up with only a few scratches

Padre Island National Seashore is the longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island in the world. The National Seashore is located 30 miles southeast of the city of Corpus Christi, Texas and separates the Gulf of Mexico from the Laguna Madre. The park protects 70 miles of coastline, dunes, prairies, and wind tidal flats teeming with life. It is a safe nesting ground for the Kemp’s ridley sea turtle, the most endangered sea turtle species in the world. The turtle nests on the beach from late April through mid-July. The National Seashore is also one of the few places people can see newly hatched Kemp’s ridleys released into the wild. Each year, the public is invited to attend 15-25 of the releases of hatchlings that emerge from eggs cared for at the Padre Island National Seashore 1. What number can you call to find out incubation facility. when hatchlings will be released? ________________________________ These releases are open to the public free-of-charge and are held at the northern end of the National 2. and bruises. We then visited Montego Bay for lunch, a quick swim in the ocean, and shopping. Our next stop was Grand Cayman, and our most exciting excursion. We boarded a smaller boat for a 30-minute ride into the Caribbean Ocean, where they had us jump out of the boat. There we stood (on a sand bar), in the middle of the ocean, surrounded by stingrays. We were able to pet, hold, and feed the stingrays, and I even got a message from one. The water was
so clear in the Caymans you could see four feet down into the water just as clear as looking through air. After the stingrays, we headed to Dolphin Cove where I was able to swim with the dolphins. This was Grace’s birthday, and all she wanted was to kiss a dolphin— she got what she wanted. Our final port was in Cozumel. My family spent several hours at the beach while others headed into town for shopping. An unwelcome thunderstorm cut our beach visit short, so we headed into
town for some shopping, too. SPJST taught us all to display our talents. Hannah Kovar, Brittanie Gaas, and Jeffery Pinkard, three of our past YAD participants, were among more than 100 people who auditioned for a part in the final night’s theatrical show in the Showtime Theater. Amazingly, all three were selected as one of six finalists for the three spots in the show. I think the assistant cruise director was a little shocked when she realized they were all from the same group. Brit-

Lodge 25, Ennis youth shares summer activities
Dear Vestnik Readers, As usual, I have been extremely busy lately. I have been doing everything from enjoying fireworks in the summer heat to freezing my prdel off in Colorado. These past few weeks have been a blast, and I can’t wait to tell y’all all about it. The first thing I’d like to y’all about is District Three Youth Achievement
Day (YAD). This year’s YAD was the best I’ve ever been to. One of the reasons this year’s YAD was the best was because I got first place on four of the five crafts I entered, I got second place on my individual talent, and on our group talent, we got second place. Also, I got third place on merit points, and I got first place in my age category for something else that I’ll talk to y’all later about. Although winning was good, I think watching all the gorgeous queens give their speeches was a little bit better. A lot of my SPJST friends ran for queen, and they all did
really good. I was so proud of all them. You have no idea how excited I am for next year because I get to be an LIT, run for queen, and seriously feel what it’s like to be a leader and a role model. By the way, I know I already talked about YAD in my pervious letter, but YAD was so spectacular that I had to mention it again. Along with YAD, I got first place in my age category in something that meant a lot to me. (I mentioned it earlier.) That something I got first place in was the Flag Day Essay Contest. As most of y’all know, there is a Flag
VӖSTNÍK
Day Essay Contest, and I enter it every year. When I was seven, I won the contest and got to read my essay at a convention in Killeen. The year after, when I was eight, I won first place in my age category, and this year I did it again. A lot of y’all know that I placed this year, and many people have requested that I put my essay in the Vestnik. I worked very diligently to write an essay and when I was done, I realized that the reader doesn’t get to see how magnificent America truly is. I also wanted the reader to realize how strong America is from reading my

essay. So, I checked the youth club handbook and found that it said that I could write a poem. With that in mind, I made my new and improved Flag Day essay.
Tribute To Our Patriotic Past I look at our American Flag with memories in my head, From the settlement of Jamestown to 9/11 where much blood was shed. I see the start of America during the French and Indian War, And Paul Revere’s ride before Lexington and Concord. When she almost ended at the Battle of the Alamo, With Travis, Austin, and Houston not letting her hang low. With Lincoln leading her through the Civil War, Waving high in Gettysburg by the eyes of the Lord. Still standing proud in 1917 with our allies by our side, During World War One soaring high with pride. She’s still flying high during the stock market crash, And in 1941 when the Japanese bombed us in a flash. She almost fell at Pearl Harbor it is to be said, With all the wounds she turned blood red, But she didn’t give up, yes that’s true. She still fought to save me and you. They stood her up tall, bold, and proud. The voice of America was yelled really loud. The stars and stripes red, white, and blue, Freedom ringing from me to you. Still soaring high during the Manhattan Project in 1950, Through the Korean War ever so swiftly. We went down a little in Vietnam, Being sent there by her Uncle Sam. After the assassination she flew at half staff, After that she lead everyone down the freedom path. Thanks to Dr. King on that oh so sunny day, Next Apollo 11 walking the moon's way. She continued to wave high during the Persian Gulf War, And on 9/11 she fell, but didn’t dare touch the floor. In Hurricane Katrina she got shredded and torn, But she still lives on and America is reborn.
We put her up every morning, we take her down every night. She’s boastful, strong, and helps us fight. Sometimes life is difficult, sometimes life lets us down, But in my heart is America and my flag safe and sound. As I look at my flag I say the Pledge of Allegiance then bow my head to pray. I thank God of the country I’m in each and every day. I thank God for the people who give their life up for me, And how I live happy, rightful, and free. She will live on forever, that grand old flag, America is my country and I do like to brag.
Soon after YAD, as y’all know, comes camp. Camp was so much fun. We did a lot of fun activities, and the dance was so much fun. As always, the dance was my favorite part. I got to dance with a lot of my friends, and make my SPJST friendships even stronger with everyone. Another thing that was my favorite part was watching all the LITs help the younger kids, and be there when any help was needed. They definitely worked the LITs hard this year, and thanks to everything they did, camp was awesome. Before camp was the Fourth of July, and you know how everything’s bigger in Texas. My uncle had a Fourth of July party, and the fireworks were totally audacious. I had explosives brightening up the world right before my own eyes. The best part was I got to light smoke bombs, use popper thingies, ignite the little racecars, and I even got to set off a Roman candle. It might not seem like a big deal to you, but it was my first time being at a party with fireworks since I was around five. It was also the first time to light fireworks by myself. Even though lighting fireworks and enjoying the miraculous works of art were fun, my absolute favorite part was hanging out with my family and meeting new friends. I will definitely remember this year’s phenomenal Fourth of July. In addition to all of this, I turned 13 on July 13, 2013. That’s a lot of 13s! I was quite melancholy to become a teenager, but I was also very excited to take on the responsibility. I got a lot of great presents and had a lot of fun. The day before we celebrated at my grandma and grandpa's house with a feast, and on my birthday, I ate at a
Mexican restaurant with my Mima, Paw-paw, Uncle Michael, Uncle Robert, and my family. After that, we went home and opened presents from them. I got a Vera Bradley purse, jewelry, Nike socks, and a Starbucks gift card. Grandpa and Grandma got me money, and my parents got me a water gun, a Starbucks gift card, my mama took my sister and me to get manis and pedis, a guitar, a trip to the mall, and a brand new pair of the best invention on earth—besides polka dancing— that’s right . . . I got a new pair of Crush by Durango Tan Jealousy Western Boots. They’re more perfect than a polka dance late on a Friday night. My cowboy boots are the best (in my opinion). Last, but certainly not least, I got literally the best present ever. I get to go to Westfest in my new boots and stay all night until the very end. You have no idea how covetous I am. I’m bouncing off the walls with excitement. I can’t wait until Westfest, so I can see my friends, party hard, and polka dance until it feels like my feet are numb—just like last year. In my opinion, last year’s Westfest was the best, but let’s see if we can break the record this year! Also, on my birthday was my cousin’s wedding. It was so much fun. I got to see my cousins that I haven’t seen in years, and I even got to see my cousins from California! I had a great time dancing and forming closer bonds with my family. I got to serve food with my cousins, hang out with my Dress for the cousins, and wedding. dance with my family. What I thought was really cool was that one of my best friends in the entire world is now my cousin. Also, my aunt, uncle, and some of my first cousins came to the wedding and gave me an adorable outfit, money, and a trip to the mall. Honestly, I couldn’t have asked for a better birthday. Right after my birthday was the day we went on vacation. So we hit the road, drove through Oklahoma, and stopped for the night in Kansas. The next day, we were on the road again to Golden, Colorado. We stopped at the gigantic Coors Brewery and took a tour and a couple of samples were given out to my parents. You how how Czech people love their beer! After

the tour, we were off to Estes Park, Colorado. When we got there, I was shocked in awe because of how beautiful it was. We stayed in a cabin really high in the air on the side of a mountain. The view was just breathtaking. While we were there, we s a w wildlife, drove our car to the top of a mountain with elevation at 14,000 f e e t above My beautiful sister sea level, and me by the river. w e n t shopping downtown, fed cute little squirrels and chipmunks, took an airway thingy to the top of a mountain, we took a few hikes, and my favorite part of all was riding the horses up the mountain. After we did all of this, it was sadly time to go back home, and we stopped by at the Garden of the Gods. It was amazing. There were huge red rocks balancing on top of each other, and the funny

part was some very brave people were climbing them! The only rock I climbed was about nine feet tall. After that, we hiked a little bit, then it was time to go home. From Colorado Springs, we went to New Mexico, and from New Mexico, we went home. This summer’s vacation was definitely fun. As you can conclude, I’m having lots of fun this summer and can’t wait to polka at Westfest. By the way, this is really off subject, but I just want to say thank you to all of y’all who read my letters. It really means a lot to me. Almost everywhere I go—whether it’s an SPJST adult meeting, to church, or just to Walmart—people always stop me and tell me that they read my letters in the Vestnik. Y’all have no idea how much that means to me, so I’d like to give a million thank yous out to everyone who reads my letters. So anyway, back on subject. I hope to see all of y’all at State YAD and Westfest. Y’all better put on y’alls’ dancing shoes, or in my case - cowboy boots, and get ready to polka the night away! Until next time! It was so much fun! I got first with my cookies. Yummmm. My cousin got first in her individual talent. She was phenomenal. I loved watching her perform. She has true talent. My most favorite part of YAD is watching all of the individual talents. I can never get enough of it. I can’t wait until next YAD. I already started planning all of the activities I was thinking about entering. In a couple of days, our family is going to Arkansas and Tennessee. I can’t wait until we finally leave. Dear Vestnik Readers, My summer has been full of activities. On the Fourth of July, my family and I went to Uncle Robert’s house. He had a cookout. He had all kinds of meat there. He had hamburger, wienies, pork, and beef. Mamma was putting chocolate cake on her plate and while she was doing that, I ate half of it. She didn’t even know it. Then, we went to PawPaw’s field to pop fireworks. The fireworks were big and loud. Momma asked me what my favorite firework was? I said the big orange firework. I went to SPJST camp. It wasn’t as hot as usual. I loved the snow cones. We went on a hayride. It was a long hayride. The gorilla, turtle, rabbit,
platypus, and elephant came out and silly-stringed and sprayed us with ice cold water. Then, after that, the gorilla got on the tractor and drove us. This was the first year that Momma didn’t stay in my cabin with me. I was so glad! She stayed in April’s cabin. Ha ha! I did rock climbing, the zip line, the giant swing, and the tall balance beam in the sky. I ate a lot of pickles at camp. Paige was my LIT that helped me with my meals, setting up my bed, and carrying my luggage. She did a lot of work. I am Paige’s duchess. I had a lot fun with her. I liked playing the game “Ships and Sailors” at camp, too. My family and I went on vacation. We went to Colorado. My favorite

Czech Feszt for Kids set for Sept. 21
The Czech Heritage Museum will be having a “Czech Feszt” for kids program at the museum on Saturday, September 21, 2013, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The program is for kids ages eight to 12. Tuition of $15 will include lunch. The museum will be sharing Texas Czech culture, music, language, history, and food with the campers in this session. The program will include a tour of the museum, language and song, crafts, and genealogy. We must have pre-registration paperwork and payment for each camper by September 18. Applications will be available at the museum or on the website www.czechmuseum.org. Instead of providing a summer program, the museum is looking at providing the Czech Feszt for Kids on a Saturday four times a year at minimal cost. Each quarter, the program will have a different focus. We need and appreciate your support of our programs. Submitted by, Becky Vajdak CHM Administrator —SPJST—

West Benevolence Fund Benefactors
The West Benevolence Fund was established by SPJST on the day after the explosion to address the short and long-term needs that were certain to emerge. Initial response has been gratifying. To date, $42,378.09 has been collected. A listing of donors appears below. Please note that this listing does not reflect the many and generous individuals who attended the West Gala on Saturday, July 20 at Seaton Star Hall. An advisory committee consisting of the presidents of the four West-area SPJST lodges has been working to identify projects needing attention and submitting requests to the SPJST Home Office for the disbursement of funds contributed to the West Benevolence Fund. The first check issued was in the amount of $3,937 and was presented to West Sokol to enable the gymnastics club to purchase needed equipment that was lost when their building was destroyed.
