Corpus Christi Getaway: Weekend of Fun, Family, Friends, and Fraternalism
Dear Members and Friends, Last weekend’s End of Summer Getaway in Corpus Christi was our grandest ever! Thanks to the many SPJST members, families, and friends who turned out to make it a success! I hope that you had as much fun as we did hosting. Based on the average chair count and Saturday pizza luncheon, this year’s attendance was estimated at 325. SPJST’s entire block of 125 “negotiated-rate rooms” was filled. Many of the pricier bay view rooms and beach cabanas at the Holiday Inn were also filled by SPJST members. There were also those who stayed nearby at other area hotels. As long as there have been fami-

lies, there have been reunions of sorts — annual picnics, holiday gatherings, and get-togethers for weddings and funerals. In addition to being a lot of fun, the Corpus Christi Getaway Weekend is a way for our SPJST Family to reconnect and build new relationships. It’s about being part of something bigger than just your immediate family. All of the events — from the Aloha Party on Friday night to the beach activities on Saturday, the luncheon, afternoon games, and “Tribute to the Groovy 70s” party on Saturday night were well-attended and punctuated by good cheer.

District officers who are planning fall meetings and fun days are especially encouraged to note these dates so you can get your meeting notices/agendas into the Vestnik in a timely manner.
Corpus Christi Fun What a wonderful weekend we all had in Corpus Christi on Friday, August 9 and Saturday, August 10 for the Eighth Annual Corpus Christi Getaway. The attendance was the biggest ever, and I think the event was the best ever! The Aloha party on Friday night welcomed everyone to Corpus in a big way, and the farewell party on Saturday night was so much fun. Thanks to everyone who dressed in costume! I really enjoyed seeing all of the great and interesting costumes. And, Saturday was filled with so many activities and so much fun. Pages 1 and 13 through 18 of this week’s Vestnik provide a summary and photos of the weekend. Many more pictures are online at www.facebook.com/spjst. By the way, it’s not too early to start planning for next year. Save the date—August 8 to 10! Back to School Best wishes to all students and teachers who are going back to school! May the school year be filled with great things. —SPJST—

Dear SPJST, The Czech Heritage Museum would like to thank District Seven for all its work on the Czech Heritage Museum raffle held at the Corpus Christi Summer Getaway weekend. We would also like to take the opportunity to thank all those who generously contributed an item for the raffle and all those who purchased raffle tickets. My puppets and I enjoyed making new friends among the young and many of the young-at-heart. The staff and I are so grateful for all of your support. Czech Heritage Society publishes new book
The Czech Heritage Society of Texas, Inc., has released the translation of the book, “Posledni Let,” (The Last Flight of American Bomber #118 on August 29, 1944). This is a factual account of a bombing raid of World War II, which chronicles the last half-hour of the American bomber #118’s flight over Čeladna and communities of Nova Ves, Malenovce, Baska, Hodonovice, Palkovice, Metylovice, and Lhotka, located in the present day Czech Republic. The whole aerial grouping initially had 893 planes involved which were composed of 599 heavy bombers and 294 fighter planes. It was one of the largest aerial conflicts of World War II in Central Europe. Author Stanislav Tofel personally interviewed villagers who witnessed the 10 airmen parachuting from the plane moments before it crashed into a forest. Among the various pictures in the book are pictures of plaques and monuments placed by the villagers where the airmen landed. Also included is a group picture of the crew of B-17 #118 along with their biographies. The bombardier was 2nd Lieutenant Albert Novak, a Czech from Missouri. This book has been translated from the Czech language into English and is approximately 100 pages with Czech text on one side and the English translation on the other side. The book, Posledni Let, may be purchased from The Czech Heritage Society of Texas for the introductory price of $13.50 plus tax $1.11 and shipping per book $3. Total $17.61. This price is for the first 100 books sold. Visit the Czech Heritage Society of Texas website at www.czechheritage.org for purchasing this book and other publications the society has for sale. The meeting of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts was called to order at 5 p.m. by President Doug Williams. He asked Hilda Burtis to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a moment of silence in memory of our departed members. All officers were present for the meeting. President Williams greeted everyone and thanked all for attending. We especially want to thank Honorary District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky and LaVerne Vanicek for driving all the way from Temple to be with us. Reports from the secretary and treasurer were read and approved. President Williams congratulated Frank Klinkovsky for selling the winning ticket for the trip to the Czech Republic at the West Gala. Frank said he sold that winning ticket on the night of the 19th then it was drawn on the 20th. The event was a great success with 447 tickets sold plus the income from the auctions. nice write-up in the Editorial Section of the Temple Daily Telegram thanking everyone for their support. President Williams asked Regina Peevey to report on her recovery from a recent car accident that she was in. She got a good report from the doctor. We are so thankful that her life was spared, and that she is recovering so well. Lamerle Zajicek reported that she will get back to her decorative painting soon as the weather gets a little cooler. Vice President A.W. Zajicek gave us a report on upcoming SPJST events. Frank Klinkovsky shared with us his recent elevator experience. They told everyone working at the SPJST Home Office that the electricity would be turned off at 5 p.m. - that is everyone, but Frank! So about seven minutes after 5 p.m., Frank was in the elevator going up to the first floor when suddenly the elevator came to a halt. The main light went out, leaving only a very dim light in the ceiling of the elevator. Frank was trapped in there. The elevator would not go up or down. To make matters worse, his cell phone would not work. He hollered and banged on the walls for help, but there was no help available; everyone had gone home. Luckily, there is an emergency phone in the elevator so he called - only to receive someone miles away and who had never even heard of Temple, Texas. They asked what his problem was, and Frank stated that he was trapped in an elevator. They asked what state he was in, then what city and the street address. By this time, Frank was so shook up, he couldn’t even give them
the street address, but told them it was the SPJST building on Fifth Street. He eventually got some help after being stuck for 45 minutes. When this suddenly happened, his fear was that he was going to be in the elevator for the rest of the day and night - for everyone had gone home. That had to be a very terrifying experience, and one that he will never forget. Frank Tomascik made the motion that we adjourn, seconded by Virginia Williams. Motion carried. Door prizes were drawn, and a delicious meal was enjoyed by all.
Next Meeting—September 9 The next meeting will be Monday, September 9 at 5 p.m. We hope that you will be able to meet with us. Dorothy Tomascik, Secretary —SPJST—

Happy Birthday, Lillie O’Shields!
Happy 90th Birthday Lillie O’Shields SPJST Lodge 39, Bryan 65 Years of Service Born August 23, 1923
President Pechal introduced newly crowned 2013-2014 SPJST State Queen Julia Zavodny of Lodge 47. She thanked the lodge for all its support and recalled being a young child and hoping to one day be Queen. Her dream has been fulfilled. Congratulations! Julia is the daughter of Elden and Becky Zavodny. Her proud grandparents are Leon and Vallie Zavodny and Maxie and Royella Roessler. Julia’s duchess is Emma Regan, daughter of Melanie and Chris Regan. Emma’s proud grandparents are Albert and Patsy Koslovsky and Mike and Rose Regan. We are so proud to once again have State Royalty in our lodge. In the 50 years of the SPJST Royalty competition, Seaton has been proud to have six State Royalty representatives from Lodge 47— two State Queens and four State Kings. It has been 30 years since an SPJST State Queen has been from Lodge 47. In 1983, Queen Shana Patterson and Duchess Michelle Skrabanek represented our lodge. Last year, State King Jerry Pechal took the role back from 13 years prior as Seaton’s State King. That role was previously held by 1990 State King Jason Reese and Duke David Koslovsky. In 1988, King Daryl Kortis and Duke Jason Reese, and in 1987, King Michael Morris and Duke Joshua Smith honored Seaton with their State Royalty roles. Congratulations to all who have participated in royalty from near and far. You all

have a lot to be proud of, whether a contestant on the local, district, or state level. Now, back to our lodge meeting. Roll call of officers showed all officers, board members, and active sales agents present except board members Lynette Talasek and Otis Meier. Twenty-eight adults and one youth member were present at the meeting. Thank you all for being a part of this meeting. We warmly welcomed Jerry Pechal to his first official adult meeting. We look forward to seeing you and now being active in the mother lodge. What a great master of ceremonies you were for State Youth Achievement Day. Joyce Skrabanek reported that Albert Pechal and Lucy Mihatsch are on the sick list. We wish you both a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing you soon. Correspondence included thank you notes from the families of Alice Banning and Elsie Forbes for the monetary donation to the lodge scholarship fund in memory of their loved one. A note was also read from State Duchess Emma Regan thanking the lodge for the money she received for being District Two/State Duchess. The July lodge minutes were accepted as read by Secretary Koslovsky. As secretary of the board, she also read the unofficial July board minutes taken by Becky Zavodny in her absence at the board meeting. Thank you, Becky! President Pechal thanked David and Jerry Pechal for the repairs they did at the hall and meeting with the repairman. He also thanked those who helped with YAD, especially Judy Pechal for making the cake and James Skrabanek and Otis Meier for helping in preparing and cutting the meat. I also want to thank those who helped and especially thank Edwin Pechal for purchasing the food, preparing, cooking, and cleaning up after cooking. We appreciate all the hard work and time he puts in to getting all the meals together for all the activities at Star Hall. Thank you, Edwin, and all others who made District Two Youth Achievement Day memorable. President Pechal stated the barbecue cookoff was a great success this year. Even though the days before there was big concern where everyone would park due to the rains, the weather cleared up, and we were given a beautiful weekend. The entertainment was fabulous. Thank you, Johnny and the Convertibles, for the much enjoyed music. A special thank you to Leo Makovy for the nice barbecue pit

Fort Worth Friendship Club
The meeting of the Fort Worth Friendship Club was called to order on Wednesday, August 7, 2013, at St. Thomas Parish Dining Room by President Betty Krenek. Everyone was welcomed. The Pledge of Allegiance was said by all. Vice President Alene Kercho read a poem titled “Blessings.” She then read a cute story about a little girl which was enjoyed. Hostesses Marilyn Llewellyn, Pat McWilliams, and Mary Agnes Ward were thanked for their good services. Everyone enjoyed Elizabeth Creamer’s sunflowers on all the tables and picture frames with praying hands by Jo Ann Wilcox which were later used as door prizes. It was nice to have Camille Bolcer back after a few months absence, and her buddy Lucille Kret was present, so they caught up on all their visiting. They have been sitting together at the same table for many years now. Secretary Elizabeth read minutes from the last meeting, and Treasurer
Jo Ann Wilcox gave the financial report. Both were accepted as presented. Our Sunshine Person Paula Hall was absent, but reports were made that Kathy Ormsbee and Monalee Hattendorf are both “under the weather.” Ladies, get well soon. You are being missed. President Betty stated that any changes to our guidelines are to be made at the September meeting. If anyone has any suggestions, be prepared to present them at the next meeting. Our guidelines state that we support St. Thomas Food Bank in August, but since this was not announced last month, we will have it for September. Door prizes were brought by Lydia Alholm (two) and Paula Arsenault plus all the pictures in frames from Jo Ann Wilcox on the tables. Lots of prizes and lots of happy winners! The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to August celebrants—Pat McWilliams, Betty Krenek, and Margaret Sears. May you all have many more. Margaret Sears reported she and Anna Marie Moncrief made a twoweek trip to Ireland and talked about how beautiful the countryside was. She brought her pictures, and we were able to view them on a television monitor. Guess I’ll have to put Ireland on my “bucket list” of places to visit. Margaret said they had a wonderful time. Anna Johnson was missed at the meeting, but she did tell me she enjoyed granddaughter Niki’s birthday eating-out social with their family. Anna is so lucky to have two loving granddaughters. Mary Ann Kozel was also missed; we hear that she was being taken to Austin to visit with daughter. Thanks to Tracy Horn for showing photos of her great-grandtwins, the ones that are always getting into mischief. Photos show them to be two precious, innocent, little children. My friend Gay Williams gave me a brochure from a luncheon she attended on Personal and Home Safety Tips for Seasoned Citizens. Her thinking was that I might like to bring this up at our Friendship Club. This presentation is put on by a Crime Prevention Specialist of the Fort Worth Police Department. This presentation covers personal safety for ladies, be aware of distraction crimes, personal safety of carrying large amounts of cash or wearing excessive amounts of jewelry, home safety, common scams by mobile criminals, and other scams. I
brought this up, and President Betty agreed this would be a good program for us to have. It was voted to see if this could be presented for our November meeting. I will contact the Police Department and try to set this up. More information on this will be presented at the September meeting. Libbie asked that if we are able to set this up, that we have a good attendance at this meeting/presentation. President Betty said the telephone committee would contact everyone beforehand. Hostesses for September will be Mary Ann Kozel, Shirley Martin, Mary Schneider, and Darlene Tompkins. Thanks to “Chicken Man Stanley” for picking up the chicken for our lunch. She is survived by parents Ida and Lionel Schulz; older brother Mark Bartos and wife April and children Luke and Francesca; nephew Alexander Bartos and wife Holly; sister-inlaw Betty Bartos; niece Jessica Good, husband Brian, and sons Austin and Coen; younger brother Michael Schulz, wife Lisa, and sons Nathan and Aaron Schulz; uncle Joe Armbruster, wife Penny, and family; numerous cousins in Dallas, Ennis, Arkansas, Iowa, Minnesota, and Nebraska; dearest friends Deborah Newman, Joe and Vreni Meier; and the numerous folks at White Hawk Community in Sanger, Texas, where she lived. Sandra was a longtime member of Lodge 84, Dallas and enjoyed the Czech Fests and the many wonderful dinners catered by “Miss Bessie” and her crew. Her father Lionel was the pitcher on the Lodge 84 Softball Team for many years and the whole family was often seen “rooting for their team.” Her mother Ida was the first female president of Lodge 84 and through the American Czech Culture Society she was an early member of
the Task Force of the Texas Cultural Partnership which was responsible for getting many ethnic groups back into the State Fair of Texas beginning in 1996 and continuing today. Sandra won numerous awards and recognitions during her career and was active in several art-related clubs both locally, statewide, and nationally. She sponsored the Art Club and the Robotics Teams at T.J. for many years, and those students were responsible for many civic projects, some of which were the refurbishing of “The Wall” on Forest Lane and the beautification in and around the school including murals in the gymnasium, lunch room, and in the hallways with murals depicting the various subjects being taught in those areas. Throughout her teaching career, she touched many lives as she shared her artistic knowledge with her students and her care and concern with her family and co-workers. Her advice throughout her life was two-fold: “Make Art” and “Art Rocks.” Farewell, dear one. We know that God has found a place for you in heaven where you can make art and pass the word that “Art Really Rocks!” Resolution Committee Cherri Petr Justine Yeager —SPJST—

SPJST Vestnik/Communication Department Presents $17,204 to Czech Heritage Museum
The Vestnik/Communication Department helped raise $17,204 that was presented recently to the Czech Heritage Museum. The Vestnik/Communication Department produced the third SPJST Cookbook that commemorated the Vestnik’s 100th anniversary and SPJST’s 115th anniversary in 2012. Proceeds from sales benefit the Museum and SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm. Thusfar, cookbook sales have generated $31,782.55 for the two organizations. The Museum is also selling SPJST Tasty Traditions Cookbooks in its gift shop.
SPJST Tasty Traditions Cookbook sales will continue to benefit both organizations while supplies last. As of August 1, less than 700 cookbooks are available. Additional funds for the Museum were raised at the 2012 Bloomin’ Temple Car Show, an event that was coordinated by the Vestnik/Communication Department and SPJST volunteers. The Home Office and Museum assisted with hosting the event that attracted 188 car show entries and included various Czech heritage activities.
Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny, left, presents a check for $5,905.37 for funds raised at the Bloomin’ Temple Car Show and a check for $11,298.83 for funds raised from the sale of SPJST Tasty Traditions Cookbook to the Czech Heritage Museum. Accepting the checks are CHM Treasurer Jesse Pospisil, CHM Administrator Becky Vajdak, second from left, and CHM Secretary Roxy Bertrand. The checks were presented at the Corpus Christi Getaway on August 10, 2013.
Czech Heritage Museum Note of Thanks
Dear SPJST, The Czech Heritage Museum would like to take the opportunity to express our gratitude and sincere thanks for two donations we received at the Corpus Christi Getaway Weekend. Proceeds from the sale of SPJST Tasty Traditions Cookbook provided one of the donations in the amount of $11,298.83. We carry the cookbook in our gift shop, and the recipes are wonderful. Many of the included traditional Czech recipes continue to promote our heritage with all visitors. Working together with SPJST at Bloomin’ Temple, we appreciated the level of dedication and the amount of
hard work that went into the entire event. It was a wonderful opportunity for both SPJST and the Czech Heritage Museum to reach the community. We were thrilled to receive a check from SPJST for $5,905.37 from the event. The museum staff, Board of Directors, supporters, and I are committed to our mission to fostering education, culture, and genealogy as it pertains to people of Czech heritage. Your financial support will assist us in our efforts. Fraternally yours, Rebecca “Becky” Vajdak CHM Administrator —SPJST—

Speaking for my family — and perhaps yours, too — it helps us to know that we are part of one really big extended family that cares about them and has a lot of interesting people! It's also a great vacation if you structure it that way. You go somewhere and have a great time with people whose company you enjoy. Look at the pictures that Melanie posted in this week’s Vestnik, and it’s very evident how true that is! Thanks to all of the moms, dads, grandmas, and grandpas who brought young people to the event. It’s especially important for them to see that the time-honored concept of “fraternalism” is as alive and vibrant today as it ever was!

Thanks, too, to those of you who visited with me and other staff members in Corpus to share your ideas for the next event. We took notes and will take them to heart. In case you’re wondering, tentative plans are to host the Eighth Annual End of Summer Getaway August 8 to 10, 2014, at the Emerald Beach Holiday Inn in Corpus Christi. Lodge 202 Jourdanton youth enjoys camp
This year, camp was very fun for me. It was my first year being a L e a d e rin-Traini n g (LIT), and I had g r e a t t i m e s with my little buddies and others my age. The entire camp experiKelly House, left, and ence was Amanda Hoggard, center, great, and both of Lodge 202, I was Jourdanton and Leah happy to McDonald of Lodge 185, experiNew Braunfels. ence it.
Amanda in the gaga pit.
Throughout the day, we did team building games, along with just being silly and goofing off in the pool or at the blob. On the last day, we had our western dance, which was my favorite. We introduced our buddies to everyone, and afterwards they could say something about their LITs. One of my kids, Trianna from the El Campo lodge, went up there and told everyone that I was “the best LIT ever.” After she finished, she ran up to me, plopped in my lap, and started crying because she was going to miss me, and well, I was going to miss her, too. So we sat in my chair both crying and laughing at the fun days we had together. It was hard to say goodbye, but some kids you will find hard to forget, and she is one of them. I can’t wait to see her next year. Fraternally, Amanda Hoggard —SPJST—

Lodges 202, Jourdanton; 30, Taiton: Making Connections
SPJST summer camp is a great way for youth members to make new friends and re-connect with old ones. This year at the combined camp of Districts Five, Six, and Seven, the LITs were assigned a group as well as two younger youth to look after. This gave all of the little ones the opportunity to make a friend with a “big kid’’ and to connect with the other kid assigned to the LIT. Even though she wasn’t assigned to me, I made a new friend this year at camp that I’m sure I’ll know for a lifetime. Emily Kresta from Lodge 30, Taiton is a sweet, little girl who automatically clung to me at our first group activity. She was always smiling at camp—no matter what we did. She said she couldn’t wait for Youth Achievement Day as she would be a duchess in the royalty contest. Walking into State YAD can always bring a surreal feeling to your head, and being my first time running for State King only made my stomach turn more. It was a delightful surprise to see my newfound friend Emily run up to me in excitement and jump up for a hug. Like any

friend would, Emily kept a positive and calm attitude throughout the day. This calmness was contagious and helped keep my nerves down during the royalty competition. It was so much fun watching the awards ceremony with my little friend sitting in my lap smiling as always. At the end of State YAD, my friend and I had a quick goodbye knowing that we’d see each other again. Even though we live far apart and have been acquainted for such a short time, Emily has impacted me in more ways than one. I love to have the opportunity to see a person grow and develop friendships. I’m sure many years from now, I’ll still look forward to seeing my little friend Emily. Czech Heritage Museum Mannequin Gets Kroj Update
Czech Heritage Museum staff Kenny Lange, left, and Frank Klinkovsky are pictured dressing one of the Museum’s mannequins. Textile expert Ms. Alice Vida of San Antonio came into the museum on July 20, 2013, and pointed out that the mannequin was not dressed properly. Her outfit was missing a traditional undergarment that was worn under short blouses with no petticoat. Alice made a cotton/linen undershirt called a rebac - spodnik by hand for the museum and sent it to the Museum. Alice also researched this type of kroj, and it comes from the
northwest part of Slovakia that borders the current Czech Republic in (the Trenčín region). With the donated rebac, the entire dress, apron, short blouse, and collar can now be seen by visitors. The Museum kroj was donated by Joyce Eddy in memory of her grandparents, Katarina and John Rendeck, who lived in the West, Texas, area. The kroj was made by Katarina using cotton that she spun by hand, and it has tiny handmade pleats. It is an unusual early Czech Texas textile that shows the incredible talent of Katarina Rendeck.

V živočišné výrobě se chová skot, prasata, drůbeže, včely a sladkovodní ryby. v S o u n dC z ec h v Lazing the day away
Welcome to another edition of SoundCzech. In today’s edition, we look at at expressions using the word ‘líný’ or ‘línej’— informal, featured in the song Jsem tak línej by legendary Czech pop group Olympic. Yawn. What could be more appropriate for the lazy days of summer, on a weekend when temperatures are expected to hit around 35 degrees Celsius! Laziness of course doesn’t necessarily have to be any way connected to the heat. Someone who is lazy by nature — think of Jughead in Archie comics or in a Czech context Hloupý Honza who never wants to do anything but hang around his bed in the kitchen — might be derided as being liný jako veš - as lazy as a pig; although veš means louse.
Someone who lazes around or sleeps until noon with alarming regularity - say boys in their teenage years - might be criticized by their family as líná kůže - lazy skin. I always imagine a boar hide hung on a cottage wall, just hanging around. Lazy bones would be the equivalent in English. The Czechs have an expression to get the blood flowing again — hejbni kostrou! —
which means get moving or literally move your skeleton, move your bones! Such a lazy person — takový lenoch! Someone who takes a long time to get somewhere, who was lazy and is now angry you kicked them out of bed, and has a proverbial black cloud over his head and is kicking an imaginary tin can along the road — se

To come back to the Olympic song, the group’s singer/guitarist Petr Janda sings, I wonder why I am so lazy, nothing makes me get up in the morning . . . Actually, that doesn’t sound half bad. Dr. Seuss has a famous children’s book about everyone getting up, up, up, going up Mt. Dilmadilts, up you worms, you pigs on stilts, up, up today. Umm, no. On second thought, like his protagonist, I think I’ll stay in bed. Maybe in the afternoon, I’ll take a cab and plop myself down by the nearest watering hole and doze off in the shade on a hot summer’s day. Let others work if they want. Want to mow your lawn? Feel free. Want to muck around underneath your car? By all means, don’t let me stop you. I’ll just lie down by this tree . . . and if you don’t like it, hey, you
can hurl all the insults you want.

Should I Buy Life Insurance Through Work or On My Own?
This isn’t always an either/or question.
Buying through work. Typically, your employer’s “basic” life insurance benefit provides coverage equal to one or two times your annual income. Many employers offer the option of purchasing supplemental coverage, often through an automatic payroll deduction. This is convenient, and you may be able to obtain the extra coverage at a higher rate without having to answer any questions about your health, a big plus if insurability is a concern.
SPJST is here to help you with what you need.
The answer is often “both.” Buying on your own. You can choose from among a wide variety of SPJST products, and you never need to worry about losing coverage if you change jobs. You also may be able to get coverage more affordably. Why? When you buy on your own, the price depends on your health and can be permanent. In a work plan, the rate often depends on the health status of employees in your age bracket and is usually temporary or until retirement age. Call us for more information - (800) 72-SPJST.
