Elizabeth Kristinek, right, daughter of Jason Kristinek, and Tristan Turner, left, son of Neal and Jennifer Kristinek Turner, present Angeline Turner with her new SPJST certificate. Grandparents are Jerome and Cyndy Kristinek, all of Lodge 157, Lubbock. Angeline was named after her great-grandmother, Angeline Kristinek.

This has been an extra busy year, and I wanted to share with you another adventure that Johnnie and I had in March. We had the wonderful experience of traveling to Germany and Czech Republic! Our grandson Blake was preparing for his discharge from the military so we wanted to see him and his wife Haley before he left. We arrived at Frankfurt Germany Airport on Sunday, March 10 with Laure, Greg, and Rita, and caught a train to Bamberg where Blake was stationed. In the USA, normally spring break is warm weather. But to our surprise, European spring weather this year was the coldest they had experienced in 10 years. Despite snow storms, ice on the roads, and below freezing temperatures, we kept trucking - literally. Laure and Blake rented a 10-passenger van and drove us all over the countryside. We even went on the Autobahn. I named it the “automatic bomb” because Blake was driving, I think, at least 100 miles per hour! We toured castles, churches, and cathedrals and enjoyed eating pig knuckles, kolaches, strudels, and all their versions of liver soup. We sampled dark beer, light beer, cold beer, smoked beer, and hot beer. We drank homemade peach slivovice, sampled Jelinek’s special brew, and drank hot tea. We had lots of “nice driveways.” (You’ll have to ask Johnnie about his “nice driveway” joke). Freezing cold weather was not going to stop us from this great adventure of a lifetime. We had the pleasure of visiting many of the villages where both John-

Here, we met the Mach cousins, Dennis and Michael, who spent the day taking us to the church where the Krajcas were married, to the original Krajca farm which is up on a hilltop overlooking Lipa, and to the Jelinek Distillery. I was happy to be able to find my Trojacek and Cvach family roots in Bechyne. We were able to locate my great-grandparents Trojacek’s grave at St. Michael Cemetery. Vaclav Martinek and his wife Rosemary welcomed us into their Chmelna House no. 10 which is the original Martinek

Great ser vice, happy smiles

avid and I were honored to attend Lodge 29, Taylor’s Barbecue Cook-Off Appreciation Dinner on August 19. We were very impressed with the event. As we drove into the parking lot, we noticed the new, bright roof on the hall. We were greeted at the door by smiling, happy, energetic youth club members who were welcoming everyone and wishing good times. That was so nice. A delicious homemade meal of tender steak, the best green beans, delicious potatoes, and homemade bread was served. And for dessert, I had the absolute best piece of homemade lemon square that I have ever tasted. Just as we finished, eager youth club members were coming around and taking our plates and offering drink refills. Talk about great service . . . with happy smiles! Thanks, Lodge 29, for a great evening. And, thank you, youth club members (under the direction of Youth Leader Cristy Girod and Assistant Youth Leader Connie Voigt) for your helpfulness. Be sure to save the dates of September 27 and 28 for Lodge 29’s annual barbecue cookoff at the lodge hall.

Next Week’s Vestnik The Editor’s email box has been filled with articles and photos for the Vestnik. Thanks to our contributors. Instead of bumping the issue to 40 pages (with limited color) and having many of the pictures printed in black and white, I opted to keep it at a full-color 32-page issue. So next week’s Vestnik will include the items that didn’t make this week’s issue. The September 11 Vestnik will also include the July Supreme Lodge meeting minutes and photos from Lodge 84, Dallas’ Princess Ball.

Member shares “Cornbread” recipe corrections

I have been looking at my copy of the SPJST Tasty Traditions Cookbook and noticed that one of the recipes I submitted has errors in it. The recipe is on page 401 for Cornbread. These are corrections that should be noted: (1) the amount of baking powder should be 4 teaspoons, not 1/2 teaspoon

(2) 1/4 teaspoon of salt is not listed, and should be

(3) in the directions, the sugar is not mentioned. It should have been included in the sentence: Sift cornmeal, flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt into mixing bowl.

I’m so sorry to those who have tried the recipe, and found it to be a flop without enough baking powder, when in reality, it is a delicious cornbread. I have tried several of the recipes and have given the book as gifts to my family and friends. It is an outstanding collection of superb recipes which can be a delight to all cooks. Since I love cooking for my family and friends, I look forward to continuing to enjoy trying the many new recipes I have noted in the book. Thank you! Lodges 91, Crosby; 156, Baytown members to discuss, vote on merger at September 13 meeting

State Fraternal Activities Coordinator’s Shares September Updates

Dear Members, As a valued member of SPJST, you and your family are invited to join in a special called meeting of SPJST Lodge 91, Crosby and SPJST Lodge 156, Baytown at Golden Corral, located at 4610 Garth Road in Baytown on Saturday, September 14, 2013. Dinner will be served starting at 3 p.m. The meeting will follow, and door prizes will be awarded. Members of both lodges will meet independently and then as a group to discuss and vote on the merger of the two lodges. For many years, many of the members of Lodge 91, Crosby and Lodge 156, Baytown have lived in close proximity to one another. In more recent times, the topic of merging the two lodges has been discussed as a way to bring the members of the

two lodges together as a stronger and more cohesive force within the community. This special called meeting addresses the necessary protocol for lodge mergers as outlined in the SPJST By-Laws. If you plan to attend, please call Sandra Dubcak at (800) 727-7578 by 12 noon on Friday, September 13 and let her know how many in your group will be attending. If you have any questions, please feel free to give District Five Director Larry W. Pflughaupt a call at (713) 859-8955 or me at (800) 727-7578. I look forward to seeing you at this meeting. Fraternally, Brian Vanicek Supreme Lodge President —SPJST—

From the Insurance Department Annual Certificate Review Program Underway

Thank you for your membership in SPJST. You are a valued part of what makes SPJST a great membership organization that provides benefits, coverage and services. These are all designed to not only provide security and peace of mind to you and your family but to provide a better quality of life with others who value their family and community. This year, SPJST has implemented a program to ensure that your certificate information, such as named beneficiary and insurance coverage, is correct and up-to-date. Our annual review campaign is under way and has had great success for those choosing to have a certificate update. By reviewing and knowing that your information is current, you can be assured that you are receiving the full value of your membership, and you have peace of mind that your loved ones will receive the care they deserve. Your fraternal field manager or lodge sales agent will continue to reach out to you, or you can even contact

them or the Home Office. Please take advantage of this service. SPJST has the most competitive insurance products, annuities, and IRAs to meet each family’s needs. We are a fraternal society that recognizes its proud heritage and believes strongly in its youth by teaching patriotism, good citizenship, teamwork, and leadership. And, if you have recommendations for new members, please share them with the Home Office, your district director, your fraternal field manager or your lodge sales agent. Together, we can continue to grow and strengthen our Society. For more than 116 years, SPJST has been a shining example in Texas of secure insurance plans and dedicated ideals of fraternalism. All this is possible because of you, our member. If you have questions or need our assistance in any way from the Home Office, please call on us at (800) 72-SPJST or (800) 727-7578. We are here to help you. —SPJST—

Thank You, Members I want to say a big thank you to my SPJST family for all the prayers, visits, cards, plants, and reading materials that I received while in the hospital. I am truly a blessed man to have so many wonderful, caring people in my life. I missed visiting with you at this year’s biggest summer events—State Youth Achievement Day and the Corpus Christi Getaway. The end of July and the first couple of weeks of August were not fun for me in the least. I spent 11 days in the hospital with pancreatitis. I was in my second day of chaperoning at Districts Two and Four summer camp when I had the attack. I am now at home and on the mend. I will be back in the office September 3. I did drop 30 pounds while in the hospital. I needed to lose the weight, but that wasn’t the right way of doing it. My plan is now to try to keep it off. In a couple of weeks, I will be making my way to the District Fun Fall Days and will get to visit with many of you. I am looking forward to those visits. Přeji vám dobré zdraví - Wishing you good health.

Fall Fun Days Start in September District Fall Fun Days will begin in September. Remember, the fall meetings are fun events. All business should be limited to emergency issues only. What a great time to meet fellow members in your district, renew old acquaintances and make new ones. Dates for the Fall Fun Days are: District One—October 13 Lodge 17, New Tabor District Two—September 22 Lodge 80, Holland District Three—October 27 Lodge 6, Cottonwood District Four—October 5 Lodge 49, Rowena District Five—September 21 Lodge 88, Houston District Six—October 27 Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje District Seven—September 8 Lodge 202, Jourdanton

Grandparents Day is September 8 Grandparents Day is the first Sunday after Labor Day. This is a day to remember those who are special in our daily lives. Everyone is somebody’s grandchild and can be involved in the observance of this wonderful day of

celebration. In 1970, a West Virginia housewife, Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade, initiated a campaign to set aside a special day just for Grandparents. Through concerted efforts on the part of civic, business, church, and political leaders, this campaign expanded statewide. Senator Jennings Randolph (D-WV) was especially instrumental in the project. The first Grandparents Day was proclaimed in 1973 in West Virginia by Governor Arch Moore. Also in 1973, Senator Randolph introduced a Grandparents Day resolution in the United States Senate. The resolution languished in committee. Mrs. McQuade and her team turned to the media to garner support. They also began contacting governors, senators, and congressmen in every state. And they sent letters to churches, businesses, and numerous national organizations interested in senior citizens. In 1978, five years after its West Virginia inception, the United States Congress passed legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day. The proclamation was signed by President Jimmy Carter. (September was chosen for the holiday, to signify the “autumn years” of life.) Today this event, begun by only a few, is observed by millions throughout the United States.

2014 SPJST Calendar Please send in your district/lodge/youth club important dates for the 2014 SPJST calendar no later than October 1, 2013. These should be annual events (not monthly events). Mark your events and mail to Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny.

Plan to Observe Czech Heritage Month October is Czech Heritage Month. That is something to consider if you are looking for an enjoyable theme for your October meeting. Here is an idea: How about hosting a covered dish social at your October meeting with an emphasis on Czech food? Many good traditional and modern recipes can be found in the SPJST cookbooks. In addition, regarding Czech Heritage Month, good times await those who travel to the State Fair of Texas in Dallas on Sunday, October 20. District Two Fall Fun Day set for Sunday, September 22 at Lodge 80, Holland

Dear Members of District Two, The District Two Fall Family Fun Day will be held on Sunday, September 22, 2013, hosted by Lodge 80, Holland. Registration will start at 1 p.m., and the meeting will be starting at 2 p.m. Our contest is to make a Christmas ornament. This is for youth and adults. We have had some great ornaments in the past made by some of our adults, so come on let’s see what you can come up with this year. We are planning on having a lot of fun, with spin wheels, cake walk, guessing games, and Patsy will be holding a silent auction. We are asking that you please bring items for the spin wheels—please be sure to check expiration dates on any food items (the district will furnish most of the items for

the spin wheels), cakes, or other sweets for the cake walk, and something for the silent auction. We will have speeches from our new State Queen Julia Zavodny and District Two King Collin Vanecek. What a great pleasure it is to hear these young people getting so involved in our SPJST and keeping the spirit going. Lodge 80, Holland, has promised to have a great meal—pork loin, potatoes, peas, carrots, and tea. Yum! So mark your calendars and come on to Holland on September 22, and let’s all have fun. The FAC report was presented by Vice President/FAC Jerry Sijansky. He stated our mid-year report has been submitted and to keep turning in our fraternal acts. Also, if anyone would like to attend any of the upcoming state tournaments, he has the forms. Thanks to all who made the kolaches for the weekend getaway. We made 63 dozen. It seems like everyone enjoyed them. All who attended from our lodge had a wonderful time and can’t wait until next year. Larry Elzner gave a report on the weekend getaway’s second annual golf tournament. His team placed third, and member James Elzner and his team placed first. Congratulations to both of these teams! There was no unfinished business. Under new business, our August donation will go to the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation. Secretary Rebecek read the youth club report in the absence of Youth Leader Gerilyn Donnell. The youth are sending boxes to soldiers in September so bring your items to the next meeting. Fourteen scarves have been turned in so far for nursing homes. They will be given out in December. Lodge 81 Needville supports VFD

The August 2013 meeting of SPJST Lodge 81, Needville was held Sunday, the 18th. At 12 noon, a prayer of thanks was given. Lodge members enjoyed a meal of barbecue brisket, and members brought an assortment of vegetables and desserts. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Bradley Stavinoha for getting the barbecue for us. He got it from the Needville Volunteer Fire Department fundraiser. Thanks also to Darlene Blinka and her kitchen committee for getting everything ready. President Vincent Newman called the business meeting to order at 1 p.m. Jeanette Newman led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We had a moment of silence for departed members Margaret Schultz and Martin Pesak. We extend our sympathy to their families and friends. All officers answered roll call. We had no one added to our sick list. Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall read the July treasurer’s report, and it was approved as read. Then, she read the secretary’s minutes for June, and they were approved as read. Treasurer Bradley Stavinoha gave the treasurer’s report, and it was approved as read. Special Funds Chairman Tom Stavinoha read his report, and it was approved as read. Under old business, Gilbert Walzel mentioned that our sign in the front is very faded and hard to read. He recalled that we had a 10-year warranty on it so Bradley Stavinoha said that he will contact the sign company and ask

about it. Under new business, we voted in new member Drenner David Gutheinz. We look forward to meeting you. Also under new business, Tom Stavinoha suggested buying an auction item from the Needville Volunteer Fire Department since we didn’t get to donate an item this year. It was approved for him to buy one item. President Vincent Newman also read a letter from Colby Zwahr asking for a donation for his Eagle Scout project. He decided to make a memorial at one of the local cemeteries for the fallen soldiers buried there. It was voted and passed to give him a donation. Door prize winners were Maxx Stavinoha, Glenn McDonald, Willie Mae Kuykendall, and Darlene Blinka. Congratulations to our lucky winners.

Next Meeting—September 15 For our next meal on Sunday, September 15, it was decided to have barbecue bought from the Catholic Bazaar. Ennis Sewing Circle

Ennis Sewing Circle met on August 8, 2013. We met around 8 a.m. and had lots of quilters arrive early — Irene Prachyl, Ann Clagett, Pat Fowler, Dorothy Prachyl, Dorothy J. Kudrna, Dolores Vrana, Martha Ritchey, Georgia Holy, Maggie Holy, and myself. We arranged tables and chairs and stretched Ann Clagett’s really pretty quilt top. Ann also brought several quilts and tops to show. They were all very pretty. We had quilters all around and quilted till 12 noon. By then, we had 20 members and two guests, Joe and Jerry. President Irene led us in grace, and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch. Thank you all for the food, many wonderful dishes, especially the upside- down German chocolate cake brought by

15

Ginny. It was really good. Thank you to the set-up and clean-up crew. After lunch, quilters returned to quilting. President Irene called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and a moment of silence was held for one of our members who passed away so very suddenly - Olga Krysinski. We also had special thoughts for Dorothy Bobalek’s aunt who is in the hospital and wish her a speedy recovery. “Our Father” was recited by all for the above, Eleanora, and all our members. Secretary Dolores read the minutes of the last meeting. A minor correction was made. Treasurer Dorothy gave her report which was approved. Sunshine Lady Eleanora was still absent. President Irene read the names of our birthday celebrants — Joan Brown, Kay Lynn Kovar, Geraldine Valek, Dorothy J. Kudrna, and Frances Vinkler. “Happy Birthday was sung to Joan Brown, Geraldine Valek, and Dorothy J. Kudrna. A birthday card was signed for Frances Vinkler - one of our shut-in members. We also signed a card for Sunshine Lady Eleanora. Remember, she fell in July and is still unable to come. She has been going to the doctor, and other things have come up. Let’s all keep her in our thoughts and prayers. Josephine Kubin was also in the hospital a few days. Let’s keep her in our prayers also. Vice President Ginny read a couple of really funny clippings, “My New Friends” and “The Patience of Grandpa.” Dorothy Prachyl also read a funny clipping about “The Doilies.” We all had a really good laugh which was good. Pat Fowler announced that in September, we will quilt for Irene; October is open; and November - Junior Sokol Polka Festival quilt. The top was made by Ann Clagett. It is really pretty with orange and brown tones. President Irene mentioned who all went to the quilt show in Midlothian — Libbie, Lil Ann, Irene, and myself. Libbie was asked to tell about the trip. We had a great time. The quilts were beautiful, most were machine quilted, and only a very were few hand-quilted. Martha also went to the show with her sister-in-law Helen Ritchey. She had a quilt on display. President Irene announced we will discuss and vote on the guideline rules for the new address membership book at the September meeting. So members, please come so we can have your input on all. President Irene showed a quilt book that Libbie bought for the Circle at the

quilt show. There was a quilt pattern that we can use when we start to make the signature quilt. We will all embroider our name on a square. Irene told of the feathers being saved for us by Helen and Gene Pechal. Dorothy Prachyl read the instructions in Czech on how to make the feather pastry brushes. She did a really good job reading the Czech. We all enjoyed it so much. Irene brought and showed how she made a small ironing board that she keeps next to her sewing machine. When she sews a square or something, she just turns her chair to the side and can press the seam. That is ‘really cool’ as the young kids say nowadays. Irene asked if anyone had any new ideas pertaining to sewing or quilting to please come forward with their ideas. Maggie Holy volunteered to show how she cross stitches. That will be interesting. Pat Fowler has been asked about quilting for non-members. We normally quilt for members only. President Irene thanked all for coming, setting up and cleaning up, the wonderful food, and all who quilted. She announced the next meeting will be September 12. We will quilt for Irene, have lunch, 50-50 dollar game, and the meeting. Georgie Holy made a motion to adjourn the meeting, and it was seconded by Pat Fowler.

Other News On June 5, Josephine Kubin, Geraldine Valek, Ann Juricek, and Mary Toupal made a trip to Bardwell for a surprise birthday visit to our member Mildred Krajca. They said they wish everyone could have seen her face when they arrived. Joyce and Joe Ehrenberger, Lil Kosarek, and Libbie Vrla recently attended the genealogy conference in Caldwell, Texas. They enjoyed it very much. Libbie always enjoys visiting with Ann Juricek from Ennis. She never gets to visit with her in Ennis. Dorothy Prachyl and husband Wesley attended a basketball game in Carrollton of their grandson Andrew Cole from Colorado called The Great American Shoot-out. They really enjoyed seeing Andrew. They didn’t say who won, but that really didn’t matter; they got to see Andrew. Dolores Vrana and husband Joe along with Joe’s daughter Vickie and husband Mike Valek, Thomas and Glenda Valek, Bill and Sharon Goodwin, and Nannette and Mike Liska went on a wonderful cruise to Alaska

on the Norwegian Pearl. They flew to Seattle, stayed three days, had a surprise visit from Jo Anne and Valerie Vitek from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, relatives of the Valek’s. They really enjoyed seeing them and had so much fun. Then they boarded the ship to Alaska which they all thoroughly enjoyed. I know they did as Dolores had many, many beautiful pictures. I almost forgot to thank Jerry Zmolek for taking out the trash; we appreciate it, Jerry. We will meet September 12, will quilt for Irene, have lunch, meeting, and 50-50 dollar game. Everyone come. We all have a great time. Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST—

State Youth Director’s Sept. updates

Dear Youth Leaders, What an exciting time we had this summer! I had a great time being at all district camps and enjoyed the fun activities at SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm. I really enjoy watching the youth interact with one another and how it helps them to come out of their comfort zone. I saw this happen with many new campers and experienced ones, too. You inspire them to be more confident in themselves, lead by example in teaching them to build lifelong friendships, and provide lasting memories from our SPJST camp. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped with State Youth Achievement Day on August 3 at the Mayborn Convention Center in Temple. Your assistance was greatly appreciated, and I could not have done this without you. This year’s constructive items and special category projects were absolutely amazing. Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek was equally impressed by the youth this year at State YAD and has enclosed a letter which he has requested be read at your next youth club meeting. 2013 SPJST State YAD Performance/Youth Videos Youth leaders, please inform your youth club that the 2013 SPJST State Youth Achievement Day DVDs are available. Grandparents Day September 8 is Grandparents Day. We all know that we live in a fastpaced world, but if we would slow down and take the time to visit with our grandparents we would learn so much from them. Marian McQuade of Fayette County, West Virginia, is the founder of Grandparents Day. Her aspiration was that such an observance might persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage of their grandparents. The first presidential proclamation was issued in 1978, with one

Make a Difference Day: Coming in October

M

ake a Difference Day is a national day of helping others. It’s a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. Established by USA WEEKEND Magazine, Make a Difference Day is an annual event that takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October. The next event will be on Saturday, October 26, 2013. Millions of men, women, boys and girls have participated in Make a Difference Day since it premiered in 1991. That includes lots of SPJST adult and youth club members. Getting involved in Make a Difference Day is easy. Anyone — young and old, individuals and groups — can carry out a Make a Difference Day project. It might be as big as coordinating a community-wide clean-up day or as small as spending an afternoon helping an elderly neighbor. Getting involved in a Make a Difference Day project is easy. The first step is deciding on a project. Choose a project that everyone in your lodge or youth club can get excited about. Volunteering together will help to solidify

Lend a Helping Hand The 22nd Annual Make a Difference Day is coming Saturday, October 26. It’s just one more chance for your lodge or youth club to make a positive difference in your community.

Each year in April, hundreds of good deeds done on Make A Difference Day are selected for honors, headlines and charitable donations. To be considered for a national honor, including the chance to receive one of thirteen $10,000 grants, it is necessary to fill out an official entry form after you have completed your Make a Difference Day project. your group and help your community at the same time. Second, find a project that has something that each person can do. You don’t all have to do the exact same thing. Each person can have a different piece of the puzzle to put in place. Third, get together on Make a Difference Day and make it happen! If your lodge or youth clubs already volunteer for worthy causes on a regular basis, that’s great! It’s what the SPJST is all about: People doing good for each other and for their local communities. On the other hand, if your lodge or youth club hasn’t been very active, Make a Difference Day is your chance to change that and make something good happen! September Vestnik Project Think about all the times that someone has helped you. Maybe it was a parent, family member, teacher or a friend. Now, what could your lodge or youth club do to make things better for someone? Think about it for a while. Maybe even talk it over with your family or friends. In the space provided — or on the back of this sheet — identify some of the things that your local lodge or youth club — working together could do— to make a positive difference in your community. _______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________

Observe Czech Heritage Month in October All youth clubs are encouraged to observe — and celebrate — Czech Heritage Month at their October meeting. Something you may want to discuss at your September youth club meeting . . . During the 74th Legislature Session 1995, House Resolution 83 and Senate Resolution 1023 were passed designating the last full week in October beginning in 1995 as Czech Heritage Week in Texas. That declaration was expanded in 1999, when the 76th Legislature of Texas passed a resolution signed by Governor George W. Bush

declaring that the month of October annually be observed as Czech Heritage Month in Texas to commemorate the contributions of Czech culture to the state.

Created by USA WEEKEND Magazine, Make A Difference Day is an annual event that takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October. The next event is Saturday, October 26. Who can participate? State King enjoys end of summer getaway

This year’s end of summer getaway in Corpus Christi was a huge hit! I have attended every year, and this year there were so many people that came from all across Texas for the weekend festivities. The sign-up table always seemed busy, and the lists for Bunco and horseshoes filled up in no time at all. This year, every friendly competition was met with a crowd of contestants ready to play 42 dominoes, pitch horseshoes, and sculpt amazing structures from the sand. In fact, the sand sculpture creativeness and ingenuity impressed the judge who had judged many sand sculpting contests before. The “extra” fun events such as the Czech spelling bee, hula dancing, hula hoops, limbo, and kolache eating contests kept all the

guests entertained. We had a great turnout this year, and I look forward to next year’s gathering. Fraternally, Sam Hoggard Lodge 202, Jourdanton 2013-2014 State King —SPJST—

During this time, I was able to work and share my faith with other youth from different churches and with the residents. My crew was in charge of painting the outside and porches of a family’s home. On Wednesday, our

group was able to go to White Sands and had an enjoyable time. We left Mescalero on Saturday, July 20 and spent the night in New Braunfels. In Memory of Billy G. Mitchell

Billy G. Mitchell, 75, of Cheapside and Victoria, passed away at his ranch home Saturday evening, July 27, 2013, with his wife of 51 years by his side. As a devout Christian and member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, he recited the rosary daily and had a special veneration to St. Bernadette. He was born March 7, 1938, in Gonzales County to J.D. and Emma Christian Mitchell. He graduated from Gonzales High School in 1956. On October 7, 1960, he successfully completed a course of study with the Texas Department of Public Safety Law Enforcement Academy as a highway patrolman. On September 12, 1969, he completed his in-service training as a license and weight patrolman. He was honorably discharged from the Armed Forces of the United States of America on March 31, 1963. Billy spent 13 years with the Texas Department of Public Safety. Not wanting to leave Victoria, he became employed with Dupont. Within six years of employment, he was offered the position of production supervisor, which was a rare feat in those days. The highlight of his career with Dupont was helping young engineers learn the process area from the ground up. This week on Czech-American TV at www.catvusa.com . . . Exploring Czech Lands The Little Wooden Town (The Wooden Townlet), as a part of Wallachian Museum in City of Rožnov pod Radhoštěm, embodies the distinctive spirit of vernacular Moravian municipal architecture of the late 19th and early 20th century. Combining both the carefully relocated original houses and the painstakingly recreated buildings fitted with interior exhibitions, the Wooden Townlet represents a particularly attractive open-air display of the traditional style of living, homerun trades and crafts and municipal and ecclesiastical institutions, and presents the spa character of the Rožnov area. The oldest part of the Wallachian Open-Air Museum in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm, the Little Wooden Town was spurred to existence by the Jaroněk brothers and the members of the Museum Association, who decided to save the traditional

Kolache Bake Show announces judging changes

Bakers are invited and urged to enter the 2013 Kolache Bake Show, an essential event of the Kolache Festival, to be held in Caldwell, Burleson County, Texas, on Saturday, September 14, 2013. 2013 entry forms with guidelines concerning those eligible to enter and other specific information are available at the Kolache Festival website at www.burlesoncountytx.com. Except for the time of the awards ceremony, this information remains unchanged from prior years. What has changed this year is the judging process. Effective with the 2013 Bake Show, the following changes are being implemented:

A) Every class in each of the five divisions is required to have a rosette winner. The only exceptions will be if there are no entries in the class, or there are unusual circumstances which warrant this. The divisions and classes as shown on the 2013 entry form remain unchanged from prior years.

25

B) The following ribbons will be awarded in each class: a rosette for the best kolache in that class, a second place ribbon for the second best kolache, a third place ribbon for the third best kolache in that class, and a participant ribbon for all other kolaches in that class. C) The judging criteria will continue to be based on overall appearance, filling, and dough.

• Overall appearance: uniformity— Are they all the same size? Do they look good together? filling/dough balance—Does the filling “fit” the dough: not too much, not too little? Are they all filled about the same? evenly baked—Are they evenly brown on top and bottom? Do they look appetizing and make you want to eat them right away? • Filling: taste—Does it taste good? Is it true to the taste of the class entered? consistency—Is the filling too runny . . . too thick?

• Dough: flavor—Does it taste good? Does it please your mouth and make your tongue want to do a happy dance? texture—Is it light to the touch

. . . not too dense or heavy? Is it “just right” . . . not too dry . . . undercooked?

Judges are encouraged to write comments on the judges’ card (one judges’ card per team of judges for each entry instead of one card per judges’ team member as has been done in the past). This card will be given to the bakers with their ribbon at the awards ceremony. Comments should reflect what is really good about the kolache, or what could be done better.

D) Grand and Reserve Champion trophy winners for each of the five divisions will continue to be chosen from the rosette winners as has been done in the past.

E) Grand and Reserve Champion trophies will be awarded at the awards ceremony Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. Grand and Reserve Champion winners are expected to write a 20word thank you note to each sponsor of the trophy and cash award received. This must be done before cash awards are released. A list of trophy and cash sponsors with contact information will be given to the winners at the awards ceremony. Instructions for how to provide verification that the thank you notes were sent will also be included. As always, for any issue which needs resolution, the decision of the Kolache Bake Show Committee is the resolution. The mission of the Kolache Bake Show Committee is to promote a fair and exemplary competition to encourage the continuation of kolache baking as a treasured culinary skill. While kolache baking is crucial to the cuisine of the Czech culture, a wellmade kolache is a joy to people of any culture.

The possibility of a sixth division, one in which prior Grand and Reserve Champion winners would compete, has been suggested and discussed. If you or someone you know would be interested in helping to sponsor this division, please contact the Bake Show Committee: Lydia Faust (979)2728317, Ann Sebesta (210) 244-3362, or Burleson County FCS Extension Agent Tina Roehling (979) 567-2308. —SPJST—
