Growing Good Corn
here once was a farmer who grew award-winning corn. Each year he entered his corn in the state fair where it won a blue ribbon. One year, a newspaper reporter interviewed him and learned something interesting about how he grew it. The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbors. “How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbors when they are entering corn in competition with yours each year?” the reporter asked. “Why sir,” said the farmer, “didn’t you know? The wind picks up pollen from the ripening corn and swirls it from field to field. If my neighbors grow inferior corn, crosspollination will steadily degrade the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbors grow good corn.” He is very much aware of the connectedness of life. His corn cannot improve unless his neighbor’s corn also improves. So it is with our lives. Those who choose to live in peace must help their neighbors to live in peace. Those who choose to live well must help others to live well, for the value of a life is measured by the lives it touches. And those who choose to be happy must help others to find happiness, for the welfare of each is bound up with the welfare of all. The lesson for each of us is this: if we are to grow good corn, we must help our neighbors grow good corn. —Author Unknown

Lodge 15 Buckholts welcomes rain
Wednesday, September 25, 2013
The meeting of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts was called to order at 5 p.m. by President Doug Williams. Lamerle Zajicek led us in the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a moment of silence in memory of our departed members. All officers were present for the meeting. The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were approved as read. In old business, President Williams found local contractor John Smith to make a lot of much-needed repairs to the lodge building. We had problems with inside and outside lights. We had to have three fans replaced, and one fan had to be repaired. He installed wiring and plumbing for two new refrigerators so we now have cold water and ice! In new business, John Smith attended our meeting. He made an offer to replace the eaves that are in bad
7
condition and apply two coats of paint on the outside of our building. A.W. Zajicek made the motion to accept this bid, seconded by Sandie Fischer. Motion carried. Hilda Burtis said that she finally got all three of her grandsons’ membership changed to Lodge 15. We are so happy to have them as members. Vice President A.W. Zajicek brought us up-to-date on all SPJST upcoming events. We especially want to remember the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive which begins in October. One of the nicest things that happened at the meeting was when we began to hear some promising thunder. Then the rain came pouring down. Different ones went to the door just to see what rain looked like. We had not seen rain like this in so long; all we had seen was sprinkles. Hilda Burtis made the motion to adjourn, seconded by Frank Tomascik. Motion carried. Next came the door prize drawing. I think everyone was a winner. A super meal was served and enjoyed by all.

There is nothing so sweet as a well earned rest, when you’ve had a very busy life — to take your ease with conscience clear, knowing you can say . . . that you put your best into the things you had to do . . . and rendered honest service in a matter straight and true. There is nothing so good as cozy as an evening in your own warm home . . . nothing better could you wish for, nothing more desire . . . a book, a

drink, in an easy chair, your own thoughts to pursue . . . a busy life behind, and quiet hours to spare. There is no pleasure quite like it, to know you’ve played your part . . . it leaves a glow of satisfaction deep inside your heart . . . To enjoy both work and leisure, that’s the way to live; the secret of true happiness, the best that life can give. The rest of my life, I plan to write, perhaps even a book. Fort Worth Friendship Club
The meeting of the Fort Worth Friendship Club was called to order on Wednesday, September 4, 2013, at St. Thomas Parish Dining Room by Vice President Alene Kercho. Everyone was welcomed. The Pledge of Allegiance was said by all, and Alene read a poem “Watching” which was enjoyed by all. Minutes from the last meeting were read by Secretary Elizabeth Creamer, and Treasurer Jo Ann Wilcox gave the financial report. Both were accepted as presented. It was reported that Lucille Kret currently is at Texas Care and will be going to a nursing home in Azle. Her daughter Linda Horner will be transferred to the same nursing home. Monalee Hattendorf was absent following her illness, but she called me to say that she is doing much better and hopes to be able to come to our next meeting. Mary Ann Kozel reported that Kathy Ormsbee called to say she is at River Oaks Health and Rehab Center on 18th Street, and when she is able, she will be going to stay with her son. Camille Bolcer and Tracy Horn were missed but hear they had doctors’ appointments. Hopefully, Ann Conner, Ella Greer, and Rose Ann Spann are well as they were also missed. Get well wishes go out to all our members on the sick list. Elizabeth Creamer thanked everyone for all the cards she received following her fall and injury to her hand. It was still bandaged. To all the other members that were absent, you were missed. We hope to see you next month. Vice President Alene stated Rose Ann Spann called to say she attended an event recently that had a ventriloquist on the program and how good this person was. Rose Ann asked if she could invite this person to our November meeting at her expense. Since we have already scheduled the Crime Prevention Specialist to our November meeting, Rose Ann will be asked to see if this could be scheduled for our December meeting. Hostesses Mary Ann Kozel, Shirley Martin, Mary Schneider, and Darlene Tompkins were thanked for their super job, and Shirley Martin’s decorations on all tables were especially enjoyed. The food table even had some large yellow Kalanchoe plants which were later given away as door prizes. Thanks, Shirley, you did good!
Alene asked if anyone has any suggested changes to the guidelines, to present them at the October meeting. A nominating committee will also be appointed. Hostesses for October will be Ann Conner, Ella Greer, and Tracy Horn. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to September celebrants Elsie Anders, Ann Conner, Faith Grantham, Paula Hall, Mary Ann Krivanek, Victor Martin, Nettie Naugle, and Libbie Vrla. May you all have many more! Door prizes were brought by Lydia Alholm (two), Paula Arsenault (two), Lorraine Cross, Shirley Martin, Helen Skrasek, and Carolyn Irby. Lots of prizes and lots of happy winners! The 50/50 dollar games were won by Darlene Tompkins and Jo Ann Wilcox. The lady from Crime Prevention/ Police Department will be a guest speaker at our November meeting. She will speak on personal and home safety tips for seasoned citizens. To all our members, be sure to come as I hear her presentation is very informative and good. President Betty Krenek was missed, but Stanley was there handling all his chores. He set up and took down tables, handled the dollar games, picked up the chicken, and even helped in the kitchen. We can’t do without Stanley! Thanks!
News There was a very nice article in the North Texas Catholic about Father James Wilcox who was recently ordained a priest and will serve at St. John the Apostle Parish in North Richland Hills. Congratulations, Jo Ann, we know you are most proud of your son. Debbie and husband Gary Skrasek and Helen Skrasek made a trip to Round Top this past weekend to attend a dinner/show featuring the Quebe Sisters. They apparently have seen this show before as Helen talked about how good these sisters are. They reported on having a wonderful time. A few weeks ago, Lil Kosarek, Lydia Alholm, Helen Skrasek, and I attended a dinner/dance at Dallas Sokol on a Sunday afternoon. Dinner featured a Czech meal of pork roast with dumplings and sauerkraut and green beans prepared the way “grandma used to cook.” It was so good, and of course, we all ate too much. We also enjoyed listening to the music and visiting with friends. While there, Lydia recognized Louise Kucera who is Anna Sustala’s niece. We found out that Anna, a longtime
member of the Friendship Club, is now 94 years old and resides in a nursing home in Austin. Louise told me she would have Anna’s daughter or son email me with the latest information on her. This past weekend, several or our members enjoyed attending the Czech Heritage dinner/dance at SPJST Lodge 92. It is always nice to visit and listen to good music, and the food was good, too. Tracy Horn enjoyed her two-week visit to Bryan where she was wined and dined and talked about all the good food she had everywhere. She especially enjoyed all her family visits. The next meeting will be Wednesday, October 2. See you then. So Until, Keep Smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—
Krouzek Českých Zen—Dallas Circle of Czech Women
President Deanna Houpy called the meeting to order. Lillian Maxcy led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and we remained standing to pray for peace in the world. We also remember the injured Martha Frnka who fell and had to have stitches in her head and Deanna’s mother Albina Vrla who fell and broke two vertebras. President Deanna welcomed 11 members and two guests—Barbara Jones, daughter of Bessie Tydlaska, and Ronnie Cechan, son of Henry and Evelyn Cechan. It was good to see Lovene Locklear and Bessie Tydlaska back. It was good to have Barbara Jones who has helped her mother Bessie Tydlaska after her back surgery, and Ronnie Cechan who had a liver transplant in December and is doing well. Vice President Jeraldine Becan said most of you have received a letter from the board whether to carry on with the Circle of Czech Women. The count has not been completed. Please sign and return it. Recording Secretary Carole Faraizl read minutes of August’s meeting. With a correction, they were approved as read. Treasurer Deanna Houpy read the treasury report of July and August. With a correction, it was approved as read.

New Business It was discussed whether to take out an ad in the State Fair of Texas Heritage Festival program book. The festival will be October 20. We decided to take a one-half page. It was discussed how we would pay for it. A motion was made that we take out an ad in the Heritage Festival program book and that we pay by money order receipt requested. Treasurer Joyce Ehrenberger resigned so we need a motion to approve Jeraldine Becan to sign a paper at the bank to make her an alternate signer of the checks. A motion was made and approved. Correspondence Secretary Anna Bradberry sent an email to Evelyn, and she said they went to Denver to turn on the heat in our condo. She said her husband decided to take a short vacation and with the cool weather, it was too hard to resist. She said she sent the donation cards, and she received a thank you for donation in memory of her son Michael Petter. I made a mistake in a thank you from the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center in Temple, Texas. It should have read in memory of Mary Lenart. The name Houpy should not have been there. Sorry for the mistake. Membership Chairman Carole Faraizl said she will have the updates at the next meeting. She delivered mine. Telephone Committee Evelyn Cechan said she hoped everyone was called or emailed. The letter was not in the Vestnik this week. There were no hostesses for September. Sunshine Committee Joyce Moore said thank you to Carole for the donation of the cards. The members signed thinking of you cards for Deanna’s mother Albina Vrla and for Martha Frnka. Bessie Tydlaska read September birthdays. We had no birthday girls present. Under new business, Vice President Jeraldine Becan said we need to select a caterer for our Christmas luncheon. A motion was made that we have Bessie Petr cater our Christmas luncheon. Bessie said she could cater it. The menu we decided on was stuffed chicken breasts, sweet potatoes, green beans, fruit salad, tea, and coffee. And, dessert will be a surprise. Bessie was asked how many circles of Beseda will she have at the Heritage Festival at the State Fair, and she said

three—Jeraldine’s family and two from Temple. Bessie said she would have the little children dancers. Bessie made a comment that Jeraldine does the costumes for her family. Jeraldine has each one starched and ironed, and they always look nice. She should be commended for her effort.
Humor Tidbits Carole read one about wrinkles. Wouldn’t it be great if we could put ourselves in the dryer and come out without any wrinkles? Evelyn read, “Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.” It ended up that “Everybody blamed somebody when nobody did what anybody could have done.” Our theme was Grandma’s brag day. The members brought pictures and told about their grandchildren. It was fun to hear the Grandma’s brag about their grandchildren. A motion was made that we adjourn. We adjourned with our quotation—“Mejte se vzdycky radi— Always love one another.” Lillian Maxcy led us in the blessing. The do vyhry gifts were drawn and handed out. We had two guests—Barbara and Ronnie—who went first in line for the luncheon of sandwiches, salads, chips, dips, and desserts.

Grandparent scam steals from senior Texans
By Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott
Many scams are designed to prey on the elderly, one of which is the family emergency scam – often known as the grandparent scam. Although variations of this scam have been around for a long time, it has become more sophisticated with the proliferation of information online. To add credibility to their calls and emails, con artists are often using personal information gleaned from family blogs, genealogy sites, social networking sites and online newspapers. The “original” grandparent scam has claimed many victims by taking advantage of a grandparent’s natural desire to protect a grandchild. According to complaints received by the Attorney General’s Office, Texas re-
tirees and senior citizens typically receive a call from an individual claiming to be their grandchild and then asked for money because the supposed grandchild is in trouble in a foreign country. To set up the ruse, the caller begins by saying something like “Hi, grandma,” or “Hey, it’s your favorite grandson.” The caller typically claims that he or she has been in an accident, was arrested, is stranded, or is in similar trouble and needs money immediately. The “grandchild” also insists that the victim not tell anyone else, including the “grandchild’s” parents – which increases the odds that the fraud will be successful. If all goes according to the con artist’s plan, the senior citizen will wire money to the “grandchild.” By the time the senior realizes that the call was fraudulent, the money is long gone and most likely not recoverable. Senior citizens have become wise to the scam in recent years, so scammers are adapting to make the scheme even more difficult to detect. Scammers have turned to the Internet and social media to research their victims and the loved ones they’re impersonating – making their act even more believable. They’ve also resorted to emails as well as phone calls, and are targeting a wider range of individuals claiming to be the target’s niece, nephew or other family member. Sometimes the callers even claim to be a law enforcement officer or lawyer representing a senior citizen’s loved one and ask for the money to be wired to them on the loved one’s behalf. Yet another ruse designed to lend credibility to the bogus call is for scammers to team up and call potential victims together. One scammer impersonates a law enforcement officer or lawyer and states that the loved one is in trouble and needs financial assistance, then hands the phone to a second scammer that impersonates a crying and very upset loved one. Telephone calls or emails that urgently request money and insist upon secrecy are red flags that a scam is underway. Other signs of detection are callers who claim to be relatives that are currently in Canada, Mexico or another foreign location; callers with unfamiliar voices who claim to be loved ones; and callers who are vague or elusive and get personal details wrong. To protect themselves from falling victim to the grandparent scam or any other fraud, senior Texans should always exercise some skepticism when they receive telephone calls urgently requesting money. Retirees and senior citizens who receive a telephone call or email from a relative who urgently requests money should verify the caller’s identity by asking personal questions a stranger would not be able to answer. Seniors should never “fill in the blanks” for callers. Instead, they should ask callers to identify themselves. Senior Texans may also consider calling back the supposed “relative” using a telephone number they know to be genuine – or simply ignore the caller’s wishes and verify the story first with another family member. —SPJST—

District Seven Queen shares summer activities
Dear Vestnik, I had a busy, but wonderful summer! I kept busy going from camp to camp. Leaders-in-Training (LIT) camp this year was really fun. After LIT camp, I went straight to the South Texas Buckskin Brigades camp in Uvalde. At Brigades camp, I learned all about the whitetail deer. The camp is based upon wildlife conservation. This year, I won top trifold. Trifolds are display boards that convey an aspect of the knowledge we gained at camp. After Buckskin Brigades, I went straight to our Area X FFA Leadership camp. Then, later in June, we had our District Seven Youth Achievement Day. I felt like it was a huge success for me since this was my last year to participate before graduating. After YAD, I still had two more suitcases to pack. One was for the Texas State FFA Convention, where I received my Lone Star Degree. After the FFA convention, I headed

Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club honors grandparents
Dear Readers, Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club honored grandparents with a spaghetti lunch and short program. Thank you to Betty for the delicious meal. Amanda Jurik, Brandon Droste, Austen and Madison Holland were charged with this quarter’s Czech cultural project. They taught everyone how to say grandma (babička) and grandpa (dědeček) in Czech. Everyone also learned to say thank you (dekuji) in Czech to all the grandparents present for everything that they do for us. A short history of Grandparents Day was given, and a sweet poem was read. The youth suggested several charity projects for the future, and we will start with a canned food drive for the local food bank as it is reportedly low on food. Now is a good time to help them out with the holidays coming up. Paige suggested that we have a lock-in at the hall and do some cleaning while we are there so we all look forward to that upcoming event and project to take on. More details to come. Everyone’s scrapbook page was distributed today so please make sure you write your Vestnik letters. Don’t forget that the theme is “friendship.” Have fun! Unfortunately, I had the Mesquite Rodeo outing this year, but Olivia reported how much fun the youth club had there on August 24. She said that it was much more exciting than last year. She said that several of the Presidents of the United States of America were in attendance. Boy, I really missed out this year. Olivia, were you joking?

Lodge 25, Ennis youth shares summer camp experience
Dear Readers, Sunday, September 8, 2013, was Grandparents Day. At our meeting, we talked about it. In Czech, grandpa is dědeček, and grandma is babička. It was fun.
Also, we are planning a lock-in, which is when we stay the night at the hall. I’m excited! I can’t wait for the next meeting. Fraternally yours, Austen Holland —SPJST—
Dear Readers, This summer I did a lot of things. For example, I went to camp and did the zipline—way high up in the air! I also got to do the blob, which we weren’t going to do because they thought we were to young. But I think we are the ones who enjoyed it the most. We didn’t get to go to the lake, but Leaders-in-Training (LITs) did and I heard they had loads of fun! Even though we didn’t get to go, we had are own fun back at the campground. Now my favorite part . . . the hay ride! All the costumes were awesome. We had a rabbit, a turtle, a platypus, the gorilla, and lots more! Now my vacation—the beach! I had way too much fun at that wonderland! And, I found my favorite thing to do . . . ride waves! How do I ride waves you may ask. So, I get my river rat floatie and go way far out in the water where the big waves are and wait for a wave to form right underneath me and ride it back. It’s fun to me; how about you? We also stayed in the best beach house ever built. It has two
stories, great views, and relaxing wave sounds. (I even fell asleep on a hammock on a screened porch on the back of the house.) It was the best place I had ever been. And in a picture that I saw, right after a big storm, it was the only house left standing. Last, but not least—school! I have the best teachers in the world. My teachers are Mr. Bramhall, Ms. Cameron, Ms. McCarson, and Ms. Cortez as fifth grade teachers. I’m also in GT (gifted and talented), and it’s lots of fun because we get to do things other kids can’t . . . like the GT picnic. I love my teachers and my school Jack Lummus Int. a lot, and we all know that I’m moving on at sometime in life. Like I always say, “You don’t get anywhere in life unless you move on or let it go.” I always say that to my friends at school when they have a loss or something. Dear Readers, Summer went by so fast. This summer I played a lot. I went to camp for the first time, and it was fun! I climbed the electric pole with the help of Mrs. Mary, Mrs. Tammie, and Mrs. Lynnette. Thank you! I went to District Three Youth Achievement Day and got first place on my blanket that I made for my cat. But I didn’t win at State YAD. Also this summer before school started, we went to the
beach with my aunt Sheila, Memaw, and my cousins Tori and Dustin. It was so fun! I got to swim in the ocean and almost flipped over in my tube, but I didn’t. Dustin and I dug a big hole in the sand, but the next day it was full of water so I made it into a swimming pool. Now school started, and it is fun. Thank you for reading, Lane Slovak —SPJST—

Lodge 49, Rowena Youth Club participated in the Miles Cotton Festival Parade. The theme was “hook, line, and sinker.” Brad Teplicek drove his pickup with a trailer that was decorated to look like the kids were in water. Youth members wore their SPJST tee-shirts, waved flags, and threw out candy to the parade watchers. All the youth had lots of fun.

Fun family activities for autumn
Fall is a great time to enjoy the great outdoors. Beautiful fall foliage coupled with great weather compel many people to spend ample time outdoors before the arrival of harsh winter weather drives them back indoors. The following are a handful of activities that are tailor-made for fall.
Raking leaves: While raking leaves might not jump out at you as a great way to spend a nice fall afternoon, families often find raking leaves together soon turns into a fun day in the yard. Build leaf piles and let the kids jump in, and then do it again. When raking, encourage kids to collect some colorful leaves and set
them aside. Once the raking is done, you can then enjoy making some homemade crafts with the leaves you and your youngsters just collected.
25
Apple picking: Perhaps no activity is more synonymous with fall than apple picking. Many apple orchards encourage customers to come by and pick their own apples in the fall. Once your family and you have scoured the orchard for the perfect apples, relax with a cup of warm apple cider before returning home to make some homemade apple sauce and, of course, a delicious apple pie.
Hayride: Hayrides are another fall tradition, and many farms offer relaxing hayrides throughout fall. Younger children who may tire if asked to patrol an apple orchard for apples might find a hayride is more their speed. Some farms may even allow customers to walk the grounds and visit the animals on the premises. Hiking: Hiking is a fun activity that can be enjoyed nearly year-round, but
VĚSTNÍK . . . Teaching Tool in the Czech Republic
This summer again I taught at a Summer English School with three Canadian teachers. I usually teach there for one week—sometimes for two and always take the SPJST Vestnik for reading giving a copy to all 49 students. The students all enjoyed the Vestnik, and they are very happy to take them home. One student Jana Hajzlerova is from Nepomuky where one SPJST family originated. People in the town talk about them moving to Texas. The family name is Lesikar. Jana is the student on the far right in the photo. The school has been held every summer for five weeks since 1992, and I have been teaching there for the past eight years. Some of the students have become my private students as they wish to continue with conversation and vocabulary. This has been a good year for all in my garden and others. My cherry trees were so loaded with fruit that the branches were almost touching the ground, and these are big 50- to 60year-old trees. I canned, froze, and

baked with many of them. The apricots were even better as last year we didn’t have that many. I made everything from them jam, canned, baked, dumpling, froze some, and made merunkavice, or as some call it “Special Moravia Juice.” And with all the rest, apples, pears, plums, and blackberries, they, too were canned, jams, and baked into cakes and kolac. I had so many tomatoes that I canned most of them and made my chili sauce for the winter time. Last but not least, the horseradish was dug, cleaned, and ground over 5 1/2 quarts of it. I have still plenty of plants for next year. So anyone who wishes may come visit me and enjoy my bounty! My private lessons have been ongoing all summer, and my fall classes will begin at the end of September. Fraternally, Br. John A. Kuba Podivin, Cz Lodge 133, San Antonio —SPJST—
it’s especially enjoyable in the fall. That’s because few things in nature are as captivating as a park or forest when the fall foliage is in full bloom. Early fall also boasts ideal temperatures for hiking, as the mercury likely won’t rise enough or sink low enough to produce the kind of extreme temperatures
that can compromise a hiker’s afternoon. Instead, fall temperatures tend to be mild and comfortable, allowing hikers to fully enjoy their often beautiful surroundings.

Czech American: The Ray Kroc Story
In honor of Raymond Albert “Ray” Kroc (October 5, 1902 – January 14, 1984)
“If I had a brick for every time I’ve repeated the phrase Quality, Service, Cleanliness and Value, I think I’d probably be able to bridge the Atlantic Ocean with them.” —Ray Kroc
How do you create a restaurant empire and become an overnight success at the age of 52? As Ray Kroc said, “I was an overnight success all right, but 30 years is a long, long night.”
Origins In 1917, 15-year-old Ray Kroc lied about his age to join the Red Cross as an ambulance driver, but the war ended before his training finished. He then worked as a piano player, a paper cup salesman and a multi-mixer salesman. In 1954, he was surprised by a huge order for eight multi-mixers from a restaurant in San Bernardino, California. There he found a small but successful restaurant run by brothers Dick and Mac McDonald, and was stunned by the effectiveness of their operation. They produced a limited menu, concentrating on just a few items—burgers, fries and beverages—which allowed them to focus on quality at every step. Kroc pitched his vision of creating McDonald’s restaurants all over the United States to the brothers. In 1955, he founded the McDonald’s Corporation, and five years later bought the exclusive rights to the McDonald’s name. By 1958, McDonald’s had sold its 100 millionth hamburger. A Unique Philosophy Ray Kroc wanted to build a restaurant system that would be famous for
food of consistently high quality and uniform methods of preparation. He wanted to serve burgers, buns, fries, and beverages that tasted just the same in Alaska as they did in Alabama. To achieve this, he chose a unique path: persuading both franchisees and suppliers to buy into his vision, working not for McDonald’s, but for themselves, together with McDonald’s. He promoted the slogan, “In business for yourself, but not by yourself.” His philosophy was based on the simple principle of a threelegged stool: one leg was McDonald’s, the second, the franchisees, and the third, McDonald’s suppliers. The stool was only as strong as the three legs.
Rewarding Innovation Ray Kroc believed in the entrepreneurial spirit, and rewarded his franchisees for individual creativity. Many of McDonald’s most famous menu items—like the Big Mac, Filet-OFish, and the Egg McMuffin— were created by franchisees. At the same time, the McDonald’s operating system insisted franchisees follow the core McDonald’s principles of quality, service, cleanliness, and value. The Roots of Quality McDonald’s passion for quality meant that every single ingredient was
Hamburger University In 1961, Ray launched a training program, later called Hamburger University, at a new restaurant in Elk Grove Village, Illinois. There, franchisees and operators were trained in the scientific methods of running a successful McDonald’s. Hamburger U also had a research and development laboratory to develop new cooking, freezing, storing, and serving methods. Today, more than 80,000 people have graduated from the program.
tested, tasted and perfected to fit the operating system. As restaurants boomed, the massive volume of orders caught the attention of suppliers, who began taking McDonald’s standards as seriously as McDonald’s did. As other quick service restaurants began to follow, McDonald’s high standards rippled through the meat, produce and dairy industries. Again, Ray Kroc was looking for a partnership—this time with McDonald’s suppliers—and he managed to create the most integrated, efficient and innovative supply system in the food service industry. These supplier relationships have flourished over the decades: in fact, many McDonald’s suppliers operating today first started business with a handshake from Ray Kroc.
The End of a Legend Right up until he died on January 14, 1984, Ray Kroc never stopped working for McDonald’s. Even when he was confined to a wheelchair, he still went to work in the office in San Diego nearly every day. He would keep a hawk’s eye over the McDonald’s restaurant near his office, phoning the manager to remind him to pick up the trash, clean his lot, and turn on the lights at night. From his passion for innovation and efficiency, to his relentless pursuit of quality, and his many charitable contributions, Ray Kroc’s legacy continues to be an inspirational, integral part of McDonald’s today.

Activites for Autumn
Continued from Page 25.
Corn maze: Visiting a corn maze is another activity that many people instantly associate with fall. Some farmers transform their cornfields into corn mazes once the temperatures dip, and such mazes can be fun for adults and children alike. Though adolescents can often be trusted to find their way through corn mazes, younger kids should be accompanied by an adult.
Pumpkin picking: Much like apple picking is best in fall, so is pumpkin picking. Rather than buying your Halloween pumpkin from the grocery store, where your options may be limited, go straight to the source and pick your future jack-o’-lantern from a nearby pumpkin patch, which will provide a much wider selection. Let your youngsters pick their own pumpkins and then spend the rest of the day carving them at home. And don’t forget to save those seeds, which can be roasted over an open flame to make a delicious snack. (MS) —SPJST—

Lodge 48, Beyersville Youth Club members hosted a back-to-school family fun day for their friends in the community and surrounding areas on Sunday, August 25, 2013. This day consisted of fun games and activities for kids of all ages, even those who are just kids-at-heart. No person went hungry or thirsty either, as they served chilling refreshments and all the best snacks. Better still, they gave out a vari-
ety of prizes at each game and held door prize drawings throughout the day where cool SPJST memorabilia was given out. The activities they had, just to name a few, were face painting, ring toss, dart throwing, duck pond, bean bag toss, cake walk, basketball, dominoes, taroks, needle in the haystack, and the giant water slide. Did I mention water was involved? Last, but

But it was the perfect end to a perfect day, and it was just what the kids needed to end their summer—on a great splash before gearing up to head back to school. Paula Kennedy, Co-Reporter —SPJST—

Sokol potřebuje tělocvičnu, taže nebudou váhat a postaví Sokolovnu i síň pokud možno co nejdříve poněkud modernějšího tvaru.

Budova Hlavní úřadovny jednoty nyní vyplnila vkusně celý městský blok a má dostatek parkování.
a volební výbory, aby volby proběhly v klidu a naše nadace pracovala i v roce 2014 bez průtahů.
Strange name for an event? Not at all, once you know the “rest of the story.” As great ingredients make great casseroles, so do individual lives blend together to make great and interesting families. In short, Great Ingredients (Individuals) = Great Casseroles (Families), the theme for the upcoming Texas Czech Genealogical Society event. The event is this Saturday, September 28, 2013, at Caldwell Civic/Visitor Center, the event will begin with registration at 8 a.m. The entire day will focus on ways and means of learning how to acquire information on those Czech family ancestors who lived in the Fatherland known today as the Czech Republic. hosting Dr. Miroslav “Mirek” Koudelka from Olomouc, Czech Republic, as our guest speaker. While TCGS has hosted Mirek to Texas a number of times in the past, this is the first time our entire program will be centered on and around his presentations. Well known for both his ancestral research and guided tours, because of the number of times he has been to Texas; this “Texanized” Czech has become a personal friend to many of us in the genealogical world. If you have not met Mirek, we invite you to join us. Mirek’s topics will include: (1) Moravian Churches: Rich History, Lofty Nobility, Neat Beauty and Private Charm; (2) How to Research Czech Birth/Marriage/Death Registers on the Internet - A Practical Lesson; (3) What Czech American Genealogists Should Know About the History of the Czech Lands; and last but not least, (4) Sedlak, Pasekar, Fleischhacker or Inquilinus? Let Us Get Acquainted with the Professions of Our Czech Ancestors. In addition to outstanding and informative presentations, our expanded Czech Research Library will be available in the Book Room where you may spend a few minutes, an hour, or the entire day researching through the large number of books which contain answers to help you fill in the blanks of your family tree. Lunch will be served at 12 noon, and keeping with the day’s theme, the menu will consist of King Ranch chicken casserole, enchilada casserole, corn on the cob, tossed salad, rolls, cookies, tea, and coffee. The fun, excitement, fellowship, and knowledge of the day is offered to all interested parties - young and the young-at-heart alike. The registration fee is $40 for TCGS members and $45 for non-members. Contact Bennie Stasny at (512) 497-6007 or by email at Blstasny@aol.com to register and for more information. —SPJST—

Expressions of Gratitude
“Homey” Environment
“Some brief reflections of our life at S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living Community”
The facility has a “homey” environment, yet it is decorated with class. We like it for my mother because we are confidant she is in a secure and safe place. She gets three nourishing meals per day, gets her medication given at the right times, has her housekeeping taken care of weekly, can go to church, beauty shop, and exercise right there in the facility. There are so many activities for our mom in the facility as well as out and about taking the “SPJST Bus” for outings. Sometimes she must pick and choose because there is more to do than time allows. From the director to receptionist, volunteers, cooking staff, nurse, maintenance, and housekeepers, etc. everyone is so friendly and gets to know each resident by name. The thing we like most though is that the family is encouraged to participate in activities and enjoy meals with your family member. It is great, too, that my sister from out of town is allowed to spend the night when she comes for a visit. We especially like the common areas we can reserve when many of us visit at the same time. If you are looking for a place for a loved one where you don’t have to worry about them, the S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living in Taylor is the place you are looking for. —Charlotte S. Albert of Thrall, Texas (Daughter of resident Arlene Schneider)
Friendly Neighbors and Good Friends
I can recommend S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living as a good place to live for several good reasons. You have your own apartment, furnished with your own things. There are personal assistants to assist you with what you need. The staff will assist you with medication, if needed. We have tasty and healthy full meals— three a day. We have our choice of games and crafts, also a variety of entertainment and church activities. Our neighbors are friendly, and we make good friends. —Abby Johnson, Resident
Many Advantages 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Small table dining. My two-room single person suite with bath. Furnishings and pictures from home. Plenty of plugs for sound system. The cleaning of apartments plus complimentary laundry. 6. Medicines managed. I do not have to schedule my own. 7. Meals are delicious. I have to guard against overeating.
These are just a few of the advantages . . . there are many more! —J. Noble Atkins, Resident
Beautiful Place and the Staff is Great
My name is Ruby Rakes. My husband Clarence and I have been married for 63 years. We came to S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living in March 2012. We moved here from Dumas, Texas, a small town north of Amarillo in the Panhandle. Our reason for moving here is that our daughter and her husband live here in Taylor, and we needed to be near them. We also have some of our grandchildren and great-grandchildren that are in the area, too. We feel fortunate to be living in such a beautiful place. The staff is great, and they are very helpful in making everything pleasant. We find the staff and residents friendly and always willing to help. We enjoy the church services, musical entertainment, and bingo. There is always some kind of entertainment we can choose to attend. We would recommend S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living to anyone. —Clarence and Ruby Rakes, Residents
Attentive Care; Close-Knit, Family-Oriented
I can’t say enough about what a blessing it is for my father to live at S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living in Taylor. The staff is caring, dedicated, reliable, and professional. They take a personal interest in each of the residents and make everyone feel welcome. They offer physical fitness and social activities that are so important in maintaining the well-being of the residents. It has been my experience and observation that the staff provides the attentive care that enables my father to “feel at home.” It gives my family and I great peace of mind knowing that he is safe, happy, and well-cared for in a close-knit family-oriented community. —Theresa Hajda (Daughter of resident V.J. Hajda)
Lots of Entertainment and Fun
I moved to Taylor when my son and his wife found this place this wonderful place. Everyone here is so friendly and nice. Staff, employees, and residents are so willing and able to help in so many ways. There are so many fun things to do here. Today, we visited the Blanton Museum of Art down at the University of Texas. It was wonderful. There is always something to do, exercise everyday in the week, and very well-attended. Lots of entertainment, bus trips, and more fun! I have used the exercise since I arrived, and it has certainly helped me physically. We have games, arts and crafts, painting, and more. —Ann Geil, Resident
