Celebrating Czech Heritage Month! ISSN —07458800
October is Czech Heritage Month in Texas!
Dear Brothers and Sisters, Happy Czech Heritage Month in Texas! What does that mean? Czech Heritage Month provides us the opportunity to inform and educate Texans of the contributions of individuals of Czech heritage in Texas history. Owing to the constraints of time and space, knowing where to start is a daunting task! Let's give it a try: We are Americans first and Te x a n s second. Adding to that, we are the descendants of our forefathers. With that as our premise, SPJST members share a common bond even as our cultural and ethnic backgrounds differ. It is through understanding and celebrating these differences that we come to know, accept and appreciate each other. Once again, through the Vestnik, through our lodges, and through our statewide sponsorships, SPJST is happy to help foster the pub-
lic’s awareness, understanding and appreciation of Czech culture in October — Czech Heritage Month. Czechs have contributed greatly to Texas history dating back to the arrival of writer Karel Postl, who may have visited Texas as early as 1823 and Frederick Lemsky, who came in 1836 and played the fife in the Texan band at the Battle of San Jacinto. On November 6, 1851, 74 men, women and children from the Czech villages around Nepomuky and Cermna set sail for America looking to make a better life for themselves. Initially, that wasn’t what they found. Conditions aboard the ship were so bad that only 38 members of the group reached Texas alive. Their first settlement was at Cat Spring in Austin County.

SPJST cookbooks receive “rave notices!”
To Whom It May Concern, I’ve used the cookbooks as gifts to my non-Czech speaking friends. Results: Rave notices! The best one is from a Kansas native - “I like the recipes because they are hearty ones . . like in the Midwest.” She often brings a ‘treat’ for our fellowship meal following church services. Neat! Czech Heritage
Continued from Page 1.
The great majority of Czech immigrants to Texas were farmers. It should come as no surprise that the great majority of the 250 or so Czech settlements in Texas lay in or near the fertile Blackland Prairie and regions of the state. The ownership and maintenance of the family farm represented a key measurement of success for the majority of the Czech immigrants, write authors Clinton Machann and James W. Mendl in Krasna Amerika, A Study of the Texas Czechs, 1851-1949. With few exceptions, they note that the firstand second-generation Texas Czechs who became teachers, preachers, merchants, doctors and lawyers, not only owned farm land but worked at farm labor for a significant part of their lives. On the matter of fraternal organizations — including SPJST which was organized by pioneers of Czech descent in 1897 — the authors define fraternal societies as “the culmination of the Texas Czechs’ characteristic enthusiasm for social organization . . .” That’s a glowing testament to fraternalism. From the outset, SPJST and its lodges have been making its members feel at home with one another in addition to providing economic security of fraternal life insurance. With this week’s Vestnik serving as your guide, I encourage you to take the next step and learn more about Czech heritage and culture in Texas. Read about it and then experience and enjoy it for yourself! Fraternally, Brian Vanicek Supreme Lodge President —SPJST—

Some district fall fun days have been held in September. Reports from members who attended have enjoyed the games and time visiting with other members. Thanks to the host lodges for arranging and hosting these fun days. Remember, the fall meetings are fun events. All business is typically limited to timely or emergency issues. What a great time to meet fellow members in your district, renew old acquaintances and make new ones! Coming up in October will be: District One—Sunday, October 13 Lodge 17, New Tabor District Three—Sunday, October 27 Lodge 6, Cottonwood District Four—Saturday, October 5 Lodge 49, Rowena District Six—Sunday, October 27 Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje
100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive Starts October 1 Spread the word! October 1 starts the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive that will benefit the scholarship fund. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Your donations will be accepted and added to the general fund that is maintained by the Home Office. In 2013, a total of 61 scholarships were awarded for a grand total of $62,500. That’s fantastic! Thanks to all who donated. No amount is too small or too large. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive will run through March 31, 2014.
Plan to Observe Czech Heritage Month October is Czech Heritage Month. That is something to consider if you are looking for an enjoyable theme for your October meeting. Here is an idea: How about hosting a covered dish social at your October meeting with an emphasis on Czech food? Many good traditional and modern recipes can be found in the SPJST cookbooks. In addition, regarding Czech Heritage Month, good times can be found for those who travel to the State Fair of Texas in Dallas on Sunday, October 20. That is Heritage Day and once again, SPJST lodges in the Dallas-Fort Worth area will be represented by their members at the celebration, which takes place just inside the entrance to the fair park. The SPJST Home Office will also
have a welcome station set up at this year’s Heritage Day celebration, and we invite you to come out for a good time!
Fraternalist of the Year Nominations It’s time to start thinking about selecting your lodge’s Fraternalist of the Year for 2014. This is your chance to recognize a stand-out individual who through example and accomplishment, provided outstanding service to your lodge or community this past year. Your lodge’s Fraternalist of the Year will also be recognized at the 2013 SPJST Awards Banquet scheduled for January 25, 2014, at the Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center in Temple, Texas. Please know that your local lodge Fraternalist of the Year may be chosen in a variety of ways. You decide the method that works best for you. The main emphasis should be on making sure that all adult members ages 16 or older be considered without bias. Individuals previously honored by your lodge may be honored again if they meet your selection criteria. The main thing to remember is that SPJST has a lot of great volunteers within our ranks, and we want to give credit where credit is due. Thanks for tending to this item at your October, November, or December meeting. If you have any questions, please give me a call.

participated in the memorial service. Supreme Lodge President Brother Brian Vanicek reported after 116 years, SPJST was all about doing good for each other and the community. In the aftermath of the West explosion, SPJST started a West Benevolence Fund. In six days, the fund received $3,845. A Texas A&M student from Seaton started a project, and with checks through the mail, the fund as of April 28 was $6,745. Four SPJST local lodge presidents close to the West area will be in charge of how funds will be dispersed. As the media moves out, lots of little projects need to be done. Hopefully, in the near future, SPJST will do a project to help raise money. In April, 52 scholarships in the amount of $1,000 were awarded to SPJST members. Eight of them were to District Three. Brother Brian’s advice was to apply for scholarships early. Youth were dismissed at 11:35 a.m. Second Vice President Sister Cherri Petr recognized age 96 and 75- and 50-year members. Then they drove on to Dennison, Iowa to visit with friends then back to Texas. Dorothy and Joe Valek, Pat and Raymond Zapletal also attended the Wahoo, Nebraska Polka Festival. They went on a bus with the Danny Zapletal Tribute Band. Everyone who went had a great time and lots of good fellowship. Irene Prachyl recently had visitors from Ankara, Turkey - her daughter and husband Ken and children Jordan and Nathan. This was their first visit in two years so they all had a very good time. Irene and Jordan did a lot of sewing while they were here. Also, recently, Irene went to visit her granddaughter Courtney and husband Wade and grandson Zac in Littleton, Colorado. The weather was 96 degrees while there so she was accused of bringing the hot Texas heat with her. she had a wonderful time visiting family and the surrounding area. The next meeting will be October 10. We will quilt, have lunch, meeting, 50-50 dollar game, and collect dollars for the shut-in members’ Christmas gift sack items.

This past summer, the daughters of the late Joe and Adell (Trojacek) Vlk - Barbara Lingberg, Irene Roche and husband Tom, and Laurie Vlk - were lucky enough to be able to travel to the Czech Republic to search for their roots. Barbara, Irene, and Laurie are members of SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas. Their late parents were also members of Lodge 84, Dallas. Armed with names, house numbers, and a good GPS, they rented a Skoda and found over 14 towns where their ancestors were from. Travelling mostly south of Prague in the Bohemian area near Bechyne, they even found a house that had been in their mother’s family for more than 150 years. While in the country, they also visited Prague, Český Krumlov, Hluboka Castle, Litoměřice, Lidice, and

On the Prague Castle grounds, they went into Saint Vitus Cathedral and saw the tombs of St. Wenceslas and St. John Nepomuk. And of course, after a busy fun-filled day of sightseeing, they thoroughly enjoyed schnitzel, pivo, trdelnik (a baked cinnamon pastry) and zmrzlina (ice cream!). While in Europe, they also explored the magnificent sites in Munich, Germany, Salzburg, Austria, and Krakow, and Auschwitz Poland. A wonderful time was had by all, and they fell privileged they were able to explore their ancestral homeland together. —SPJST—

Love blossoms at S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2, Needville “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13
Love blossoms everywhere, and S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2 in Needville is no exception. That’s where Frankie Bartosh and Joy Combs fell head over heels for each other; and now they’ve taken their devotion to a new level. Joy has been a resident at the facility for a few years, and Frankie has been there since 2007. “It just kind of happened,” said Activity Director Wilma Whatley. “They were at the same dinner table and they got to talking. It went from that to a friendship and then falling madly in love with each other.” So at 3 p.m. Saturday, September 14, with some 60 guests and most of the residents in attendance, a commitment ceremony was performed for the happy couple at S.P.J.S.T. “We had a minister and a beautiful, lighted archway,” Wilma said. “His nephew and her sister were the
best man and matron of honor, and we had a little flower girl and also a little boy as the ring bearer.” The groom was waiting at the front of the room with his best man by his side, all smiles, as the bride headed down the aisle. “She’s in a wheelchair, but with the help of her father and her son she walked down the aisle,” Wilma said. The couple exchanged vows and rings, and tears flowed as they sealed their love with a kiss. “One of the aides just cried and cried and cried,” Wilma recalled. “Everybody was taking pictures on both sides of the family and they all
seemed to have gotten along beautifully. It was just as perfect as a wedding could be.” The couple chose blue and white as their colors, and that theme was carried out throughout the ceremony. Joy chose chocolate for her bride’s cake, and it was decorated with chocolate roses. A smaller vanilla cake was topped with intertwining rings. “Tamika Coffman, who works here in the kitchen, bakes an absolutely delicious chocolate cake; and that’s what Joy wanted, so that’s what we had,” said Wilma said. Director of Nurses Angela Parks decorated the cakes, and Wilma said all the staff “worked really, really hard to make it a good wedding, and it turned out absolutely perfect.” “They brought in a bunch of food and it was a happy occasion,” Wilma said, adding the Bartoshes are now blissful in their own room at S.P.J.S.T. “They are just ecstatically happy,” she said. —SPJST—

Stories of Ammannsville

Can you hear it in the wind the voice of time come back again, here in this place where it stands still lay stories of old Ammannsville
The history of this lonely place lies just behind the graveyard gate, the haunting peal of St. John’s bell begs questions from old Ammannsville
What if they once again could rise could talk to us to our surprise, what answers would at last unfold what stories could at last be told
This place knows more than it will tell its secrets lie in those who dwell, but time is buried, won’t reveal the stories of old Ammannsville. —SPJST—

Words of welcome were given by Albin F. Machu, son of Albin E. Machu, who was the person most responsible for working with the Corps of Engineers to accomplish this huge task. Albin E. Machu didn’t rest until suitable land was found for the cemetery, instead of giving in to relocating the cemetery in a low-lying area that was first proposed. Colors were presented by Matt Whisenant and son Kolton Whisenant, as “The Star Spangled Banner “was played. The Czech flag was presented by Dylan Mehevec. Members of Taylor Czech Chorus sang the Czech National anthem, Kde Domov Muj. Reverend James Hejl, pastor of Taylor Brethren Church, gave a meaningful presentation, remembering war veterans, including Martin Vitek, and others interned at the site, ending with “The Lord’s Prayer” in English. Ms. Ross was the person from the Williamson County Historical Society who worked closely with Darwin Machu, who was directly responsible for acquiring the historical
marker for the Machu Cemetery. Darwin spent a bit over three years on this project. SPJST Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek congratulated the Machu family on its success in obtaining the marker. He spoke about SPJST and mentioned that Machu family members were charter members of several of the first 25 lodges. After Brian’s presentation, Darwin gave the closing remarks, thanking those who assisted him in this endeavor, including Ms. Ross and Mr. Bob Brinkman, from the Texas Historical Society, Terry Loessin, who put the entire program together, and to the members of the Machu family who keep the cemetery mowed and trimmed, making this cemetery the best-maintained cemetery in the area. He then read the inscription on the marker. The closing prayer and benediction were given by Reverend Larry Zabcik, pastor of Granger Brethren Church. After the official unveiling of the Texas Historical Marker, attendees, numbering approximately 100, were treated to an abundance of kolaches, donuts, and cold beverages as they strolled through the cemetery and visited with family members and friends. Mix in bowl until smooth, put 1 tablespoon oil in bowl. Roll dough around in oil. Cover with Saran Wrap. Let dough rest in warm place 30 minutes to 1 hour. Cut into 3 parts (work with 1 part at a time). Knead for 1 minute. Roll each part to approximately 14- x 16-inches on floured cloth. Brush dough with melted butter. Stay about 1 inch from edge of dough with all ingredients except about 2 inches of dough left on long side, to pull over top of roll to seal it off. Place on each part the following: 2 cups apples, peeled and shredded 1/3 cup raisins 1/3 cup coconut 1/3 cup rolled fine cornflakes or vanilla wafers sprinkled over all 1/2 cup pecans, chopped 1/2 cup sugar with 1 Tablespoon cinnamon, mixed (sprinkled over all ingredients) 3 Tablespoons butter, melted and drizzled over all ingredients
Pick up cloth along the long edge and roll up like jelly roll, stopping when ingredients are covered and leaving about 2 inches of dough with no ingredients on it. Fold in and pinch the 1-inch edges on the 2 sides to keep juice from escaping. You should have dough left on long side to stretch the dough over the top of the roll. With seam side down, place roll on greased foil-lined pan. Brush lightly with butter. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 40 minutes on middle rack until golden in color. Brush with butter again. • Letters to Bibbie •

This article is one of a series of “Letters to Bibbie, ” written by Ivo Marek to his distant relative Vickie (Bibbie) Cooper of Granger, Texas. Ivo and his parents live in Choceň, Czech Republic. Ivo is an engineer by profession and an accomplished weaver and textile artist. In addition, his hobbies are gardening, cooking, and fine-tuning his English.
Dear Bibbie, Today’s theme of my story can interest children as well as adults like you who like children and take care of them. So today I will write about famous Czech marionettes, Spejbl and Hurvínek and about Theater Spejbl and Hurvínek (next DSH). The founder of Theater Spejbl and Hurvínek was Josef Skupa (*1892, 1957). From his childhood, he presented a talent for marionette theater and drew well. He finished his study on Art-industrial school in 1915 and become a high school teacher. In 1915, Skupa registered at the Chamber of Commerce in Pilsen his own and original trade-mark on his marionettes, Spejbl (Hurvínek’s father) and Hurvínek (pupil of the ground school and Spejbl’s son). He successfully
began to act in his own Pilsen theater of Spejbl and Hurvínek from 1930. From this year, he left his teaching occupation and gave all the time to his marionettes by profession. In 1933, he became president of the international puppetry organization UNIMA. Skupa with puppets often drove from Pilsen throughout Czechoslovakia and became very popular; he repeatedly played abroad. In 1944, Josef Skupa was arrested by the Gestapo, and the theater was forced to close. After the end of World War II decided, with a group, to reopen the theater, but this time in Prague. In 1948, Skupa was named National Artist. The theater is currently based on Dejvické street in Prague. After Skupa’s death, Miloš

Kirschner became the director of the theater and the head marionette-actor (1927-1996). Kirschner spread Skupa’s trip tradition to abroad and spoke performances in language of the hosting country. So, by this way Spejbl’s plays became accessible even for foreigners, and today the theater is the most renowned Czech marionette scene abroad. Since this time the theater has played in 31 countries, in 18 languages. After Kirschner’s death, Kirschner wife, Helena Štáchová, became the director of the theater and interpreter of marionettes Mánička
(Hurvínek’s girlfriend in his age) and Mrs. Katharine (grandmother of Mánička),. Trademarks for use of Spejbl and Hurvínek today apply to the theater and its director Štáchová. DSH is the marionette theater, with plays for children and adult play marionettes Spejbl, Hurvínek, Mánička, Mrs. Katharine and the dog Žeryk. For children the stories are from this time, as well as the fairytale ones. Plays for adults are mostly satirical comedies. The theater has performed about 250 original plays until this time. In addition to these individual plays, short
Dnes tedy budu psát o slavných českých loutkách o Spejblovi a Hurvínkovi a o Divadle Spejbla a Hurvínka (dále DSH).

Kirschner rozšířil Skupovu tradici zájezdů do zahraničí a mluvil představení v jazyce hostitelské země. Spejbla a Hurvínka převzal Martin Klásek. Původních her uvedlo divadlo do dnešních dnů kolem 250. Kromě jednotlivých her si popularitu získala také pásma krátkých scének a grotesek, prokládaných písněmi. Meet . . . Prokop Diviš
Prokop Diviš was born in Žamberk, eastern Bohemia in 1698. He studied theology and was ordained a priest in 1726. From a number of his devices, he gained world fame through his grounded lightning-conductor, which was the first one built near the parsonage in Přímětice in the summer of 1754. He named it “meteorological machine.” (Notice: Benjamin Franklin constructed his underground lightning-conductor in 1760). Farmers destroyed Diviš´s lightning-conductor in 1760, because they assumed the year’s
27
big drought was brought about by this lightning-conductor. Diviš also engaged with influence of electromagnetism on plant growth, treated rheumatism with static electricity, and constructed a unique stringed instrument powered with electrical current from Leyden’s flasks. The priest and inventor Prokop Diviš died in Přímětice 1765. Vocabulary: priest — kněz

The Texas Czech dialect will most certainly die in the next 15 years, which makes its documentation paramount. Literally hundreds of tapes that sit disintegrating in boxes hold not only the key to preserving the dialect for future generations of Texas Czechs and for scholars, but also priceless information on Texas Czech culture and heritage in the context of Texas and American history. The Texas Czech Dialect Archive will be the only comprehensive Texas Czech archive in the world, a central place for a variety of audio-recordings and print documents (newspapers, autobiographies, immigrant letters, photographs, etc.) gathered from ethnic Czech Moravians in Texas over a 40-year period. The recordings will be searchable by topics and linked to the speakers’ home communities using an interactive map. You will be able to listen to a recording and read its transcript simultaneously. Access will be easy and free. The Project has been inspired by the Texas German Dialect Project (www.tgdp.org) also housed at the University of Texas at Austin and first envisioned by John Tomecek, a graduate student at UTAustin, in the early 2000s. Our goal is to digitize and/or digitally organize interview and event recordings featuring different generation ethnic Czechs in Texas, using three principle sources: Lida Cope’s 1997 Archive of 327 hours of speech (interviews and other events); John Tomecek’s 2007-2009 Archive of 150 hours interviews); and Svatava Pírková-Jakobson’s Archive of all things Texas Czech collected in the 1970s and 1980s (only
Cope, left, and Janis Hrncir. They recently visited the Svatova Jakobson exhibit that is housed at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. Lida is heading up the Texas Czech Legacy Project and its Dialect Archive.
97 recordings from her vast database have been digitized; her former students, TCHCC, and the Briscoe Center for American History in Austin own her other materials – all need to be identified, preserved, and made available). The Archive will be dedicated to her. The Texas Czech Heritage Cultural Center in La Grange, Texas, has already expressed interest in setting up a computer station for access to the TCDP in its genealogical library. As such, the TCDA will become a popular community resource searchable for oral histories and language features, and a helpful genealogy tool. What’s next? The website (search for “Texas Czech Dialect Archive”) should be available in the next few months. It will then need to be further developed and expanded to create a user-friendly searchable Archive. The team is small and funds are lacking. Modest funding might become available should the Texas Humanities grant proposal submitted mid-March be funded. Just consider: It takes about 48 hours of work to fully process one hour of speech! If you see value in this project and like what you see once you visit the site, please become a supporter of the project. In the spirit of the first call to the community issued by John Tomecek in the early 2000s, “Náš jazyk, naše dědictví, naše povinnost!” For more information on the project, email Lida Cope at East Carolina University at copel@ecu.edu. —SPJST—

Kněz a vynálezce prokop Diviš zemřel v Příměticích r. 1765. Ivo Marek —SPJST—
