Czech Republic Mission Trip 2013
This past summer, I had the privilege to go on a mission trip to the Czech Republic with members of the Fields of Faith group from Dallas, Texas. It was a journey of a lifetime, one filled with joy and excitement upon seeing the home land where my Czech ancestors lived before they immigrated to Texas. To my surprise, however, this joy quickly disappeared when I realized that my beloved homeland is very dark spiritually. Why? Because the light of our blessed Lord does not shine

Lodge 47, Seaton presents scenes from extravaganza
as brightly as it should. This revelation has prompted my testimony through this article and my future efforts to return the Christian faith to the homeland from where it was founded grew and then eventually destroyed through the years by multiple social and political events. Shortly, after my arrival in Prague, I realized that there was no real large Christian work in the Czech Republic. Yes, organized religion is alive and well, but not the Christian faith. Yes, there are some gatherings such as church services, bible studies, etc. Biblical Christian faith is not practiced on a large scale. In fact, very few people I spoke with practiced a religion or the Christian faith, own a Bible. They did not have someone to tell them why it was so important that they should each experience a personal relationship with Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Out of the 450 plus individual contacts

SPJST in New York Times
Each time I start my column with, “This week’s Vestnik comes to
you from . . . ” it has been an exciting place. Well, not so much this week. Most of this week’s Vestnik has been composed at my home . . . due to the dreaded wisdom teeth surgery. It’s been an interesting week trying to recover—chipmunk cheeks and all, but I was surrounded by a very loving husband and a family of kitties who all took great care of me. I learned that applesauce comes in peach, strawberry, and raspberry flavors. Of course, I will probably never want to eat it again after pretty much living on it for a week! I know better days are ahead. Thanks to those who shared their get well wishes. They are appreciated and inspired me to get up and get moving — despite the issues that came with this experience! SPJST Mentioned in New York Times An article entitled “The Kolache: Czech, Texan or All-American? (All Three)” appeared in the October 7, 2013, New York Times. SPJST (or actually Slavonic Benevolent Order
of the State of Texas) is mentioned in the sixth paragraph. You can view the article on SPJST’s Facebook page or on the “links” page at www.spjst.org.
Correction A photo of two Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club members each holding a tray of cupcakes appeared on the cover of last week’s Vestnik. One of the young ladies was incorrectly identified. The ladies are Kylee Halbrook, left, and Hailey Girod.
Czech Vestnik Contests Have you participated in the Vestnik’s Czech Heritage Month contests that appear in the October 2, 9, and 16 issues? The deadline to receive entries is October 30 at 12 noon. Below is a photo of the prizes that lucky winners will receive. These include a kolache candle, framed “The Lord’s Prayer” in Czech, Czech teddy bear ornaments, flashlights, and a Texas bag. Be sure to enter today . . . and good luck! (This week’s contest is a little challenging. Hint - not all kolaches may look alike.)

SPJST Education and Nature Center expresses thanks for donation from cookbook proceeds
Dear Melanie and All Who Purchased SPJST Tasty Traditions Cookbooks, Thank you for the donation of $9,638.62 from the SPJST Tasty Traditions Cookbook fundraiser to the SPJST Education and Nature Center. Please know that these funds are greatly needed and appreciated. To us, this donation helps show the commitment SPJST has to help SPJST Education and Nature Center to get on our feet and achieve the goals we have set out in front of us. Please know that you are making a great investment in the future of all the youth and adults who use our facility. It is one thing when someone verbally says that they support you, but it is truly special when they financially help you achieve your goals. I look forward to continuing to serve SPJST and all who come to SPJST Education and Nature Center. Fraternally, John Hoelscher Executive Director SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm —SPJST—

Dance starts at 7:30 p.m. and goes until 10:30 p.m. The same place—197 Hughes Road. You do not have to dress for Halloween, but it should be fun if you do. A $25 gift card to Outback Steak House will be awarded to the best costume. So come on out and dance to Nathan Ham and the Country Boys. We have danced to them before, and Nathan can play that trumpet! Please bring finger food for the food table. Hosts will be Andy and Maria Anderson and “Gang.” They are sure to do a great job of decorating for Halloween. Glenn Lenderman and Friends did an excellent job of playing for our September dance. They always put on a good show, and Glenn not only sings and plays every instrument in the world, but he is a good entertainer as well.
Next Meeting—October 17 Our next lodge meeting will be Thursday, October 17 at the SPJST lodge hall on Hughes Road. Last month, we did not have a quorum (at least five people) so we could not conduct a meeting. We need to have a quorum at this meeting so we can vote on having our business meetings changed to the Monday before the third Friday night dance to allow more of the officers and members to participate in

The Magic Act By d.knape
In magic we can all believe that rabbits come from hats, but it is all illusion it happens way too fast The eye follows direction misdirection is our bane, yet writing is the finer act even harder to explain
The reality is that writing uses only slight of hand, words flow from the magic wand come from the common pen What inspiration follows ink that flows from start to end, ideas and thoughts materialize into words we understand The wonderment of writing is more than we comprehend, a pen produces miracles lets mind and heart pretend The wand holds our attention asks thought to follow hand, it may be pure illusion but imagination is the end
How puzzling the ideas that come as notions, they portend mysteries that can't be solved made by the magic pen Now you see it, now you don’t can you imagine that, creating words out of thin air surely is a magic act. —SPJST—

Czech Mission Trip
Continued from Page 1.
we estimated that only a very small percentage knew how to be saved. Reread I Peter 3:15: “Be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you for reason of the hope that is in you.” You will recall how important it is to establish a common ground so that you can share your Christian faith. The Holy Spirit always provides the words and picture stories that will help develop this connection. We can only present our personal testimony, and we must remember it is only God that can do the saving. There I stood in an Eastern European country – an odd kind of foreigner – not from there, but yet from there; maybe even related to some of them. I had to find a way to bridge the gap and share the gospel. As I visited with the Czech people, I recalled these words of Peter, and I began my contact with them on a personal level. I told them that I was a full blooded Czech from Texas, visiting my homeland for the first time to find the homes and villages of my ancestors, but more importantly to make contact with the Czech people themselves. I reminded them that my ancestors left for socio-economic reasons, but more so to have freedom from religion as they best understood at that time according to the teachings of John Hus. I shared with them that my ancestors took their deep abiding Christian faith and left all they had for hope in a new land, The United States, eventually to settle in the blackland belt of Texas. They built Czech communities, continuing all their homeland traditions and Christian faith. With a connection established, I then would ask permission to ask them a question. With their consent, I asked them where is the Christian faith in the Czech Republic today that John Hus died for? Where are the churches with doors opened wide that teach the truth that John Hus was willing to die for? Why don’t Czechs have a relationship with Christ? To my surprise, after I shared the gospel with them, they asked: “Jesus died from what? What sin? What is sin?” They had no concept of the word “sin.” They did not know that they were lost and destined for an eternity in hell already condemned by God. I shared scripture with them so that they would see where God’s word states, that “all” people have fallen short of the will and purpose of God. Now with
each person I shared the good news with, the fallen human state –a sinful state—emerged. In response to hearing the word of God, they responded with all types of excuses why they do not need to believe. Some seemed to think that it was a new age and they had no need for the old ideas like following the Biblical teachings. Like it’s a new age, the old is left behind for the new. We don’t need God. We are not accountable to God. Some even blamed the former destructive Communist rule destroying all that was known about God through the true preaching of the word of God. Don’t misunderstand me. Today’s Czech people are smart, well aware of world events, educated with philosophies of the new age. All of them believe that they are living a good moral life, treating others well and through their lives contributing to the social good and order of the Czech Republic. Here in the United States, we send missionaries all over the world to share the good news about Jesus Christ. Our list includes the Congo, Costa Rica, the American Indian Reservations, Panama, China, and others. Rarely do we see the Europe on the list. I am here to challenge individuals to help send their Christian faith back to their homeland. It’s time for us to take our Christian faith back the Czech Republic. Don’t just send it; take it yourself! I am already planning to return to the Czech Republic next year. Look around the world today; we only have a short time to share Christ before great tribulation and persecution comes upon the Church in America. Long ago Amos Comenius famous prayer was . . . … As they bade farewell to their native land they did so in the firm conviction that they themselves should see the day when the Church of the Brethren should stand once more in her ancient home; and as they stood on a spur of the Giant Mountains, and saw the old loved hills and dales, the towns and hamlets, the nestling churches, Comenius raised his eyes to heaven and uttered that historic prayer which was to have so marvelous an answer. He prayed that in the old home God would preserve a “Hidden Seed,” which would one day grow into a tree. (Source)
I can tell you that yes absolutely that small seed is still there; it’s hidden; it has not grown into a tree. It will not
grow until you and I pray about the work needed in the Czech Republic. That seed will not grow into a tree until people like you and I care about the lost souls in the Czech Republic. If you don’t share the word, how will they ever hear? Comenius lifted a prayer that the Church of the Brethren should stand

I enjoyed the Slavic Festival in Houston. It’s really something to see — all the cultures come together in union for celebration. I’m looking forward to the State Fair coming up soon! District Two youth participate in fall meeting
The annual District Two Fall Meeting was held on Sunday, September 22, 2013 at Lodge 80, Holland. It was great to see more than 40 youth in attendance. Seven of the eleven youth clubs in District Two were represented: Elgin, Taylor, Seaton, Beyersville, Holland, Falls County, and Round Rock. We were pleased and honored to have with us District Two King Collin Vanecek and Duke Trevor Wuensche of Beyersville and State/District Two Queen Julia Zavodny and Duchess Emma Regan of Seaton. Collin and Julia shared their winning YAD speeches with the audience. Thank you both again for a job well done. Without a doubt, you could tell Trevor and Emma were once again looking up to their role models. There were 34 youth who entered the Christmas ornament contest. What beautiful ornaments! Congratulations to each of you who entered. It was great to see so many entries and each so well done. There were youth activities for the youth and adults alike. Along with the cakewalk and country stores, we had a new game to try your luck. A big thank you goes to Leonard Kaderka and District Two Director Jesse Pospisil for making and donating a “putting green.” What a hit! Not only did the youth enjoy it, so did the adults. It pays to write letters to the Vestnik! When District Two youth leaders met back in April, we brainstormed on how to get more youth to write letters to the Vestnik. A suggestion was made to have a drawing each quarter for letters to the Vestnik. Each time a letter is written the name is put in a box. The more letters you send in, the better your chances for a gift card. The first quarter Vestnik letter winners are: Brooke Newsom of Beyersville, Payton Porubsky of Seaton, and Isaac Flores of Elgin. Congratulations! Next drawing will be held at the District Two Lock-In on December 13 in Taylor. Get busy, District Two Youth. Write letters to the Vestnik. It pays! The District Two Youth once again held a silent auction. Funds of $320 were raised to help defray the costs of

The 2013-2014 State Royalty made its first appearance on August 31, 2013, at Westfest in West, Texas. The fallen firefighters were honored as parade marshals and fire trucks from across Texas made the trip to pay homage to their sacrifice. We were honored to ride in Corvettes in the parade and meet with people at the SPJST booth at the fairgrounds. I particularly enjoyed handing out fans and chatting with the local people and visitors alike. I also spent time with children encouraging them to add their name or a drawing to the SPJST board. After completing my duties, I roamed the festival sampling the great food and being entertained by the music and dancing on the various stages. ceeds to the West fire fund. I saw the same kind of friendship and outpouring of camaraderie at the 50th Annual Slavic Heritage Festival in Houston on September 29. To commemorate this milestone, the leaders recognized one of the original founders of the festival and explained some of the history. Long ago, before the festival’s inception, the different regions of Slavonic cultures held festivals at the same time but in different places spread across Texas. Fifty years ago, a group of Slavonic leaders banded together to create a festival in which the Czech, Ukrainian, Croatian, and Polish people from across Texas gather together to celebrate their similarities and their differences. The festivities began with the presentation of the American flag and the united singing of the national anthem fol-
lowed by the presentation of each country’s flag and the singing of the respective country’s anthem. As the various cultures took the stage to entertain guests, it was easy to make comparisons and contrasts in dances, music, and costumes. Traditional food and wares were on sale for all to enjoy. It was a special treat to see fellow SPJST members from the Houston area that I have been sharing district camp with for the past few years. As we celebrate Czech Heritage Month in October, I am looking forward to representing SPJST at the State Fair of Texas on October 20. Hope to see you there! —SPJST—

She was a winner this half of the year from our lodge. Others will be given at the District Two Spring Meeting. So write letters to the Věstník so people know what we are doing. I spoke about the recent trip to the Slavic Fest in Houston on September 29. District Two Beseda Dancers performed. They will also be dancing at the State Fair of Texas on October 20 then at SPJST Lodge 88, Houston on October 27. shown the proclamation. Then we talked about going to the SPJST Czech Museum. We tabled it till the November meeting. We then discussed fundraising projects. We handed out brochures and voted on selling bags. Amber has ordered the booklet, and we will be getting them to you all as soon as we receive them. A discussion was entertained about attending the Renaissance Festival, but we will not be going this year. Next, I spoke to the youth about the check we received from the Home Office based on the amount of meetings you come to and also talked about the fact you get points for writing letters to the Věstník, participating in bringing items for the charity projects, and
doing Věstník projects. We decided to collect more groceries for Make a Difference Day and will deliver these closer to Thanksgiving. And, we will be collecting jackets, blankets, stocking caps, socks, etc. and toys for Blue Santa. Please bring to the next meeting on November 3 at 1 p.m. Letters were then written to the Věstník and turned in. Birthdays for October are Brady Alexander and Jamie Bostick. Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Host Successful Glow-in-the-Dark Party
On October 6, 2013, Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club held a glow-in-thedark/black light party, which was also a membership drive. We had a wonderful time. We had 17 youth members and 13 guests attend—not to mention the many adults who were there. Two of the guests are SPJST members, and we’re so glad they came out to see what fun the youth program is. We hope to have them back! We draped the dance floor area with large sheets of cardboard decorated with neon markers and spray paint. We
hung black lights in the middle to give off the glowing effect. State Youth Director Lynette Talasek and District Two Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky shared our amazing youth program with the visitors while the current youth group met with a gentleman from Applebee’s to discuss our upcoming fundraiser. Once our meetings were finished, we had all the kids get in the middle of the cardboard and switched the lights. They had a blast looking at the shirts and clothing that glowed. We had a va-
riety of games to play, including pass the glow-in-the-dark poop! (It wasn’t really poop.) Then, we had snacks and all received door prizes. Thank you, Lynette and Patsy, for bringing the door prizes! Thank you, District Two Director Jesse Pospisil and wife Linda, for providing the cups that change colors. They were a hit! We hope everyone had a good time and hopefully we’ll see some new faces in our youth group soon! Cristy Girod, Youth Leader —SPJST—

Lodge 202, Jourdanton Youth: Visiting Westfest Again!
Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club meets Oct. 19 at Spring Creek Growers
Dear Members, Since our trip to the Museum and to NASA both got cancelled due to other obligations, we now have a new one planned. We will meet at Spring Creek Growers (23803 Decker Prairie-Rosehill Road, Magnolia, Texas 77355; (281) 259-8114; info@springcreekgrowers.com) on Saturday, October 19 at 10 a.m. for a day of fun. There is a snack bar available or you can bring your sack lunch. I will provide cookies and drinks.
I remember attending Westfest many years ago (I think in first grade) but going back was a very cool experience. My brother, the State King, was going to be in the parade so I went with him. It was 100 degrees and was very humid so every few minutes I had to splash water in my face. I enjoyed seeing all the floats and old cars pass by, and I acquired a lot of candy that day. It was really fun seeing my brother in a parade, but I’m sure it was really hot for him. After the parade, we went to the fairgrounds, ate some delicious food and shopped at nice arts, crafts, and clothing
booths (still sweating, of course). My favorite part was watching high school students dance to Czech songs, and not just because there were some cute boys (but that was also really nice). My trip with my brother to WestFest was a fun experience, and I can’t wait until the next parade we go to. Fraternally, Amanda Hoggard —SPJST—

“Texas Czechs: Rooted in Tradition” project seeks funds
Hello. I’m writing to let you know about “Texas Czechs: Rooted in Tradition.” It is a project Dawn Orsak and Lori Najvar are working to get started. If you have already heard about them and their project then you are one step ahead of me. I do not typically send these requests out but this is an ambitious goal and very professional. I know we get a lot of requests on a weekly basis about projects which would like our support. According to their website:
Through our work over the last 15 years, we saw evidence of the instrumental role that Czechs have played in shaping the iconic Texas cultural landscape. We came to understand the enormous value in documenting and honoring enduring Texas Czech community traditions, some of which have been celebrated over 150 years. The idea of a traveling exhibit was born to highlight the people and the traditions on a national level. The exhibit will include eight to 10 panels with colorful photography and well-researched text, artifacts, stunning portraits, and an audio/visual station showing inspiring short films of present-day Texas Czech culture. We anticipate that it will open in late spring 2014. Everywhere the exhibit is shown, we’ll plan public programs featuring Texas Czech musicians, cooks, dancers, speakers and more. Maybe we’ll feature you! Further, they would like to put this comprehensive exhibit in schools and museums in the United States and the Czech Republic. If you could look at
their site and make a mention of it at your meetings or in your newsletters to get a mention of it to your members. They are the next generation of Texas Czechs who want to exhibit our unique culture to the state of Texas and the United States. Everyone I have met says that us Texas Czechs have kept these traditions alive more than any other state. Visit their website at http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/516317. Please contact them for further questions. Email Lori Najvar at lori@polkaworks.org and Dawn Orsak at dawnorsak@gmail.com. Thank you, Jana Vaculik —SPJST—
Stories of Ammannsville By d.knape
Can you hear it in the wind the voice of time come back again, here in this place where it stands still lay stories of old Ammannsville For here among these old tombstones lie the remains of family bones, who rest in long and solemn rows and keep the stories of the old
What if they once again could rise could talk to us to our surprise, what answers would at last unfold what stories could at last be told
The history of this lonely place lies just behind the graveyard gate, the haunting peal of St. John’s bell begs questions from old Ammannsville
Oh, how we wish that we could ask and question those who knew the past, whose answers sadly lost, weren’t saved are now forever in these graves
This place knows more than it will tell its secrets lie in those who dwell, but time is buried, won’t reveal the stories of old Ammannsville. —SPJST—

Spirit of the Immigrants Czech Family Starts New Life in Strange Land By Jim Becka
JJ Becka came to Texas in the early 1900s, after the tragic death of his father, one of the wealthiest men in the Bohemian Paradise (North Czech Republic). In Texas, he started a construction company near Temple and became wealthy during the Great Depression.
I have some concerns for the country and the way it is changing. My dad’s family were immigrants from East Europe and my dad often talked about what his family found when they arrived in Texas. Like most of the immigrants to central Texas, there were rousing political discussions. But, people seemed to look at character more than words. And, they genuinely did what was best and morally correct. When my dad was about 10, one of the men in the community killed himself and his wife. The man was a wild drunk and abused his wife and the children. There were five or six children. One was old enough to take over the family farm. My grandfather and grandmother took in and raised the rest. The children did not get a free ride. They had duties like all the Becka children. But, they were loved, studied the Bible, and were expected to be
good students. My grandfather translated the British Classics from English to Czech for them on weekends (Grandpa was fluent in four languages). I met two of the surviving children two years ago. They were like my own family. They were moral, educated, and successful in the real world. One of the two had worked in the NASA Space program and helped send a man to the moon. They said JJ taught them independence. When it was time to buy school clothes the children were provided money and taught how it should be spent. My grandparents raised them without the help of government and in a community that refused to make excuses. I think our country has lost the attitudes of immigrants. Editor’s Note: Jim’s dad, Jerry C. Becka, spent his life reading the Vestnik. He passed away last year. Jim teaches journalism and was a writer for many years for several major media organizations. We appreciate him sharing this story with the Vestnik. —SPJST—

Great Ingredients = Great Casseroles A Great Success
Texas Czech Genealogical Society members and guests were treated to a full day of sharing and thought-provoking presentations on September 28, 2013, during which everyone learned new ways to research the individuals who make up our families. The entire day was devoted toward enabling the attendees to better understand the circumstances which influenced the lives of our ancestors. Registration began at 8 a.m. Coffee, juice, and kolaches were available for a light breakfast as the attendees renewed acquaintances and met new people who were in attendance for the first time. The event officially began at 9 a.m. with prayer and the singing of the “Star Spangled Banner,” both led by Reverend John Gantt. TCGS President Charlene Hurta was suffering from an acute case of laryngitis and was unable to make her customary remarks.
Dr. Mirek Koudelka Dr. Miroslav “Mirek” Koudelka from Olomouc, Moravia, Czech Republic, joined us for a return visit, delivering four interesting presentations. Mirek has been our speaker on a number of occasions, and his visits are always highly anticipated. During his time in Texas, he also met with individuals needing help with their re-
search in the Czech Republic and with those who are planning trips to the fatherland in the near future. Mirek’s first presentation of the day, “Moravian Churches: Rich History, Lofty Nobility, Neat Beauty and Private Charm,” was of particular interest to the conference attendees since the majority of Texas Czechs emigrated from Moravia. He presented a photographic tour of a number of Moravian churches, which helped us understand their history. As he showed the photos, he discussed the churches’ inherent features and explained the various architectural styles. The second much-anticipated session, “How to Research Czech Birth, Marriage and Death Registers on the Internet,” provided the tools to use to discover Czech birth, marriage, and death records on the internet, using Czech websites. After his presentation, some of the persons in attendance seemed ready to try to do this type of research on their own. Many others seemed to believe that having a Czech researcher do the job was the easiest way and the way most likely to obtain true, correct data since everything on the websites was written in Czech, German, and Latin, using old world script. In keeping with the theme of the day, lunch consisted of casseroles, corn-on-the-cob, tossed salad, and rolls. During the lunch break, attendees enjoyed inspecting and bidding on items on the silent auction table and purchasing Czech items from the sales table. Several shoppers noted that they were buying Christmas gifts.

Other people searched for information in the assortment of books in the Book Room where TCGS books, along with the Wendt Collection were set up. Several TCGS members, led by Arnold Pechal, helped with book research. Even after lunch, the attention of the audience did not wane. The next presentation, “What a Czech-American Genealogist Should Know about the History of the Czech Lands” was met with the same degree of interest as were the morning sessions. Mirek explained the history from the earliest structure of the country, through its many changes, to the time that the Czech Republic was formed in 1993. Many wars affected this small country and, because it was ruled by so many different nations, often the Czech people didn’t know who their ruler actually was. He discussed the beginning of Christianity in the Czech lands, which was brought in by Saints Cyril and Methodius. The religious situation was one of the reasons that many of the Czech people decided to

immigrate to America, but it wasn’t the only reason. Social changes were difficult for the Czechs and the industrial revolution there opened the door for many to decide to go to America. They just wanted a better life for their families, and they didn’t see much hope for that in their homeland. The earliest records which could be used for genealogical purposes were the Tax Records for Bohemia, known as “Berni Rula.” Land records, birth, marriage, and death register records, census records, and emigration records followed. Unfortunately, many of those records were not preserved, and the ones that were preserved are sometimes difficult to locate. The last presentation of the day dealt with the jobs and professions of the Czech population before immigration. A large group of them were farmers who had varying titles, depending on land ownership. Others were field cottagers, such as gardeners, or cottagers who usually had a craft, which was needed for the every-

day needs of the villagers. Those persons were known as weavers, tailors, shoemakers, laborers, blacksmiths, barkeepers, bakers and butchers. Lesser prestigious job groups consisted of sub-tenants, roomers, day laborers, grooms, and maids. A small number of the population consisted of retired persons, shepherds, foresters, winemakers and hop-growers. Absorbing this vast amount of information presented by Dr. Koudelka was challenging, but very paramount to understanding those people from the Czech lands who were brave enough to leave their homes and families for a trip over the ocean that would lay the foundation for our lives in Texas - lives that are much easier than our Czech ancestors lived.
Favorable Comments Many favorable comments were heard as people prepared to return to their homes. The day was obviously a great success and the many tips and websites that Mirek shared with all of us will help with further research of those ancestors from the Czech lands.
Next Meeting—February 1 The invitation was extended for everyone to plan to come to our annual meeting, which will be held on February 1, 2014. Submitted by, Nancy Machu —SPJST—
