Encourage One Another

ne day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry. He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal, he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so she brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?” “You don’t owe me anything,” she replied. “Mother has taught us never to accept payment for a kindness,” he said. “Then, I thank you from my heart.” As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strong also. He had been ready to give up and quit. Years later, that young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately, he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room. Dressed in his doctor’s gown, he went in to see her. He recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day, he gave special attention to the case. After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it, then

wrote something on the edge, and the bill was sent to her room. She hesitated to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally, she looked, and something caught her attention on the side as she read these words . . . “Paid in full with one glass of milk.” (Signed) Dr. Howard Kelly. Tears of joy flooded her eyes as her happy heart prayed: “Thank You, God, that Your love has spread abroad through human hearts and hands.” There’s a saying that goes something like this: Bread cast on the waters comes back to you. The good deed you do today may benefit you or someone you love at the least expected time. If you never see the deed again at least you will have made the world a better place . . . and, after all, isn’t that what life is all about?

With Sincere Sympathy We extend sincere sympathy to District Six Youth Counselor Lisa Bubela of Lodge 30, Taiton and her family. Lisa’s husband Greg passed away on October 14, 2013. The Central Texas Accordion Association (CTAA) and SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin have teamed up to sponsor a dance at SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin on Sunday, November 3, 2013. The event will be the first annual Central Texas Accordion Jamboree and will feature numerous accordion players and accordion music. Twelve different groups, including two dance bands, will perform from 3 to 7 p.m. Dance music will include waltzes, polkas, foxtrots, country two steps, and even rock and roll. There will be lots of opportunity to get out on the dance floor and have a good time. The popularity of accordions and accordion can be found in all cultures through the ages. In the 1950s, professional accordion players such as Myron Floren and Dick Contino kept the instrument popular and caused accordion sales to go up. Many an average Joe went out and bought an accordion to learn to play it. By the 1960s, however, the accordion’s popularity had gone south, and the newly bought accordions wound up in a closet and were mostly forgotten. More recently, the accordion has had a revival in popularity. New technology has made it possible for accordions to play not only traditional polkas and waltzes, but a va-

5

riety of more upbeat music as well. The accordion is an instrument for all ages. Both young and old can learn to play and enjoy making music for themselves and for others. For the youngster it can be a new challenge and make for some exciting sounds. For a retired person, it can give many hours of interesting and challenging times while keeping the mind active. Anyone interested in attending one of the monthly CTAA meetings will find this to be true. One of the newest members is a young person who has struggled with autism and learning difficulties all her life. She became interested in the accordion and has since learned to play well enough to participate regularly at area jam sessions. Other examples include the retired school principal who only began to play after retirement and now plays weekly at nursing homes, or the Harvard University graduate who came to the CTAA looking for a teacher and now plays solos on her own. However, not everyone is interested in performing at public events, and most CTAA accordion players play for their own enjoyment at home. The Central Texas Accordion Association is for anyone interested in playing the accordion or who just enjoys listening to accordion music. Members include professionals as well as beginners. Persons interested can reach us for more information at austinaccordion@gmail.com. The Central Texas Accordion Jamboree is taking place at SPJST Lodge

kitchen, and helping wherever needed. Thank you! Thank you! We thank our many members, friends, and businesses who participated with donations, purchasing tickets, purchasing signs for their business, bringing and bidding on silent auction items. Thank you for your support of Lodge 47. There are many friends (not lodge members, well, not yet anyway) who came out to help. We really appreciate you. Top prize winner of the one person guided management buck hunt at Tenroc Ranch in Salado was won by Jimmy Golden; second prize - three person pheasant/quail hunt in Santa Anna won by Steven Evans; third prize - five-night Caribbean Cruise/travel voucher won by Stacey Kabler; fourth prize - four-person guided bay fishing trip to Port O’Connor won by Gary Stock; fifth prize - four-person, one round golf at Tour 18 Dallas in Flower Mound; and sixth prize - one person guided hog hunt with Ronnie Creek from television show “American Hoggers” including a dinner with guest and Ronnie at Ratibor Grill won by Richard Giniewicz. An added attraction this year was “Get the Knife Out of the Deer.” You went home with the knife, and your name was put in a drawing. First prize winner of a gun was Justin Kraatz. Winners were excited to have so many nice top prizes this year along with many auction items and top prizes for the bucket drawing. There were many of you who bid on the live auction, purchased tickets for the bucket items, and bid on the silent auction

items. Thank you! Thank you! SPJST is a fraternal organization, and we want the entire family to be included so children are always welcome. We appreciate your bringing them with you. There were several games in which the children were kept busy. Many participated in the turkey call. It was great. Some of those calls had us believing there were turkeys outside the door. A new game for the children was a putting green in trying to get a hole-in-one. There were many really good, young golfers out there. A nickel flip for heads or tails was another game. It was so much fun to watch the youth choose their “heads or tails” and see who would continue on.

Then came the special drawing. Each youth attending was put into a drawing for special prizes. They had to be in attendance to win the prize. This year, we had six youth prizes. Winners were: shotgun - Bayley Mitchan; tent Allyson Briggs; outdoor game - Colton Surovik; outdoor games - Logan Erskine; fishing pole - Faith Vaculin; and fishing chair - Colton Regan. We appreciate Bell County Sheriff Eddy Lange for all the announcing and making the crowd feel welcome. It is always fun when the one announcing is out there in the crowd, and you can tell he is enjoying himself. Thank you, Eddy. Once again, thank you to all who participated in our annual fundraiser. It was a great evening. It was fun to see so many people enjoying, visiting, and making new friends. We look forward to next year. Please mark your calendars for the third Saturday in September which will be September 20, 2014, for our next annual Extravaganza. Invite your friends and family. We at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton do have a wonderful time in our many different activities during the year. We’d love to have you join us. We welcome you at any time. Always feel welcome to call any officer or member to find out what's on our calendar. We also have an outstanding youth program for youth kindergarten through high school seniors. There is so much to offer these young ones; scholarships, camp, outings, and lifelong friendships. Meetings for the youth are the first Sunday of each month at 1 p.m. with the adults meeting at 2 p.m. Please join us! We’d love to have you! Fraternally, Patsy Koslovsky, Secretary —SPJST—

Lodge 187 Round Rock members entertained

Hello, There! Our meeting started with entertainment from Jennave Fuchs. Jennave talked about and displayed the props of her Snow White Improv show that she does. As she acts everything out of all the characters, there is a narrator that says everything in English and German. Jennave also brought one of her many Oktoberfest dresses for us to see. We all talked about the Czech culture and how Halloween is celebrated. Czech Halloween is November 2, and they call it Dusicky. For Czechs, November 2 is a day called Commemoration of All the Departed. It means that people celebrate the memory of deceased relatives at this time. Especially on this day, they think of their loved ones that are gone forever. Many Czechs make journeys to visit the places where their relatives rest at last – the graveyards. They decorate the graves of their dead, bringing flowers and lighting candles in their memory. Source: http://prague.net/blog/article/29/dusicky-czech-halloween We discussed that the city of Round Rock is interested in buying the lodge and property. We moved and voted to table this item of business until further investigation. We spoke about the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive and how it benefits the children and adults. We scrutinized the list of missing addresses that we received from the

Lived Here All My Life By d.knape

I asked the local farmer man red of neck and face how long he knew this spot of ground how long in this place, and in plainspoken honesty he answered quite concise said he lived here purposely darn near all his life

I asked him what became of it the town now gone to seed he said the railroad moved the town despite the local pleas, the town was left in disarray no more people came the town had simply gone away has never been the same

I inquired how people felt what lesson had been taught without hesitation he replied on that I’ve got one thought, a man can search the whole wide world can lust for fame and wealth but always returns to where he began still searching for himself

It’s not the courthouse square or trains that make a happy town this place is better off without just take a look around, people seem the happiest when they are left alone raisin’ crops and families pride and purpose grown

MUDr. Emil Holub (dále EH) byl český lékař, cestovatel, kartograf a etnograf v Africe. Narodil se r. 1847 v Holicích v rodině lékaře. Na přání svého otce vystudoval lékařskou fakultu na univerzitě v Praze, kde r. 1872 získal titul doktor medicíny. Touhu po cestování v něm probudila četba afrického cestopisu Davida Livingstona. První cestu do Afriky uskutečnil r. 1872. Zpočátku tam léčil pacienty v evropských rodinách a hledače diamantů. Po návratu do Prahy uspořádal velkou výstavu, přednášel, napsal knihu o Viktoriiných vodopádech a vydal cestopis Sedm let v jižní Africe. Expressions of Gratitude

“Homey” Environment

“Some brief reflections of our life at S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living Community”

The facility has a “homey” environment, yet it is decorated with class. We like it for my mother because we are confidant she is in a secure and safe place. She gets three nourishing meals per day, gets her medication given at the right times, has her housekeeping taken care of weekly, can go to church, beauty shop, and exercise right there in the facility. There are so many activities for our mom in the facility as well as out and about taking the “SPJST Bus” for outings. Sometimes she must pick and choose because there is more to do than time allows. From the director to receptionist, volunteers, cooking staff, nurse, maintenance, and housekeepers, etc. everyone is so friendly and gets to know each resident by name. The thing we like most though is that the family is encouraged to participate in activities and enjoy meals with your family member. It is great, too, that my sister from out of town is allowed to spend the night when she comes for a visit. We especially like the common areas we can reserve when many of us visit at the same time. If you are looking for a place for a loved one where you don’t have to worry about them, the S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living in Taylor is the place you are looking for. —Charlotte S. Albert of Thrall, Texas (Daughter of resident Arlene Schneider)

Friendly Neighbors and Good Friends

I can recommend S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living as a good place to live for several good reasons. You have your own apartment, furnished with your own things. There are personal assistants to assist you with what you need. The staff will assist you with medication, if needed. We have tasty and healthy full meals— three a day. We have our choice of games and crafts, also a variety of entertainment and church activities. Our neighbors are friendly, and we make good friends. —Abby Johnson, Resident

Many Advantages 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Small table dining. My two-room single person suite with bath. Furnishings and pictures from home. Plenty of plugs for sound system. The cleaning of apartments plus complimentary laundry. 6. Medicines managed. I do not have to schedule my own. 7. Meals are delicious. I have to guard against overeating.

These are just a few of the advantages . . . there are many more! —J. Noble Atkins, Resident

Beautiful Place and the Staff is Great

My name is Ruby Rakes. My husband Clarence and I have been married for 63 years. We came to S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living in March 2012. We moved here from Dumas, Texas, a small town north of Amarillo in the Panhandle. Our reason for moving here is that our daughter and her husband live here in Taylor, and we needed to be near them. We also have some of our grandchildren and great-grandchildren that are in the area, too. We feel fortunate to be living in such a beautiful place. The staff is great, and they are very helpful in making everything pleasant. We find the staff and residents friendly and always willing to help. We enjoy the church services, musical entertainment, and bingo. There is always some kind of entertainment we can choose to attend. We would recommend S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living to anyone. —Clarence and Ruby Rakes, Residents

Attentive Care; Close-Knit, Family-Oriented

I can’t say enough about what a blessing it is for my father to live at S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living in Taylor. The staff is caring, dedicated, reliable, and professional. They take a personal interest in each of the residents and make everyone feel welcome. They offer physical fitness and social activities that are so important in maintaining the well-being of the residents. It has been my experience and observation that the staff provides the attentive care that enables my father to “feel at home.” It gives my family and I great peace of mind knowing that he is safe, happy, and well-cared for in a close-knit family-oriented community. —Theresa Hajda (Daughter of resident V.J. Hajda)

Lots of Entertainment and Fun

I moved to Taylor when my son and his wife found this place this wonderful place. Everyone here is so friendly and nice. Staff, employees, and residents are so willing and able to help in so many ways. There are so many fun things to do here. Today, we visited the Blanton Museum of Art down at the University of Texas. It was wonderful. There is always something to do, exercise everyday in the week, and very well-attended. Lots of entertainment, bus trips, and more fun! I have used the exercise since I arrived, and it has certainly helped me physically. We have games, arts and crafts, painting, and more. —Ann Geil, Resident
