Pay It For ward

ast week, a mother from Miami was so desperate to feed her hungry family that she was trying to steal a lot of food. Miami-Dade County Police Officer Vicki Thomas was about to arrest Jessica Robles but changed her mind at the last minute. Instead of arresting her, Officer Thomas bought Robles $100 worth of groceries. “I made the decision to buy her some groceries because arresting her wasn’t going to solve the problem with her children being hungry.” And, there’s no denying they were hungry. Robles’ 12-yearold daughter started crying when she told local television station WSVN about how dire their situation was: “[It’s] not fun to see my brother in the dirt hungry, asking for food, and we have to tell him, ‘There is nothing here.’” Officer Thomas says she has no question that what she did was right. “To see them go through the bags when we brought them in, it was like Christmas. That $100 to me was worth it.” But Officer Thomas did have one request: “The only thing I asked of her is, when she gets on her feet, that she help someone else out. And she said she would.”

And guess what? The story gets even better. After word got out about what happened, people donated another $700 for Jessica Robles to spend at the grocery store. And then best of all, a local business owner invited her in for an interview and ended up hiring her on the spot as a customer service rep. She started crying when he told her. “There’s no words how grateful I am that you took your time and helped somebody out—especially somebody like me.” And to think it all started with one veteran police officer trusting her “instinct” instead of going “by the book.” —Source: WSVN 7 News Miami/Fort Lauderdale

Dear Melanie, I wanted to make sure these kids’ picture was in the Vestnik. They were a blessing to us and to the vendors. They did odd jobs helping get set up for the Christmas in October craft show on Saturday, October 12, 2013, at S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living Community in Taylor. Also, the vendors were so thankful for all the help they were to them unloading their things from their vehicles to their booths. Just wanted to say a special thank you to them for being there for us. The event was a huge success! A total of 30 vendors offered a variety of specialty items to purchase. Among the customers, many were able to find their Christmas gifts early. Fraternally, Julie Stermer Marketing Director Editor’s Note: See more photos from Julie on page 10. —SPJST—

Member’s daughter seeks genealogy assistance

Dear Melanie, My daughter needs some help with her family history genealogy on my wife’s family. Is it possible for you to run the following in the Vestnik?

Dear Vestnik, Hello, I’m currently researching the John and Anna Polasek Hurta’s family tree, and I am trying to wrap up the research so that I can publish my family’s history. But, I’m running across some dead ends in my research, and now I find myself having to ask you to publish this letter in the Vestnik so that I can possibly get the clues I need to finish my research. These are the following families that I need some help on in my research: Joe and Rosa Pish family raised their family in the Taylor, Texas area. They had seven children: Albina (Hurta), Annie (Hurta), Rosy, Theresa (Tracy) (Hurta), August, Francis (Kanak) and Charles (Charlie). I need to get some information on Albina {married to Josef (Joe) Hurta}, Annie (married to John Hurta), and Tracy (married to August Hurta)? Frank Stiba and Annie (Anna) Hurta Stiba raised their family in the Taft, Texas, area. They had a daughter, Anna J. Hurta, who married a man with the last name of Pressler. First name I do not have. I am looking for the descendants of Anna and her husband.

Frank Hora and Albina (Bennie) Hurta Hora had three daughters (named Esther, Julia, and Helena) and one son Frank Hora, Jr. I am looking for any genealogy help on any of their daughters’ families. Esther never married, but chances are great that Julia and Helena did get married. My mother recalls one of the daughters marrying a man who was a professor at Texas A&M with a last name of White.

If anyone can help me out, please email me at the following email address: hruskawd@sbcglobal.net. Please put “Hurta Family Tree Search” in the subject line. Thank you in advance, Hope C. Hruska Thanking you in advance, Eugene M. Hruska Lodge 88, Houston —SPJST—

the instrument popular and caused accordion sales to go up. Many an average Joe went out and bought an accordion to learn to play it. By the 1960s, however, the accordion’s popularity had gone south, and the newly bought accordions wound up in a closet and were mostly forgotten. More recently, the accordion has had a revival in popularity. New technology has made it possible for accordions to play not only traditional polkas and waltzes, but a variety of more upbeat music as well. The accordion is an instrument for all ages. Both young and old can learn to play and enjoy making music for themselves and for others. For the youngster it can be a new challenge and make for some exciting sounds. For a retired person, it can give many hours of interesting and challenging times while keeping the mind active. Anyone interested in attending one of the monthly CTAA meetings will find this to be true. One of the newest members is a young person who has struggled with autism and learning difficulties all her life. She became interested in the accordion and has since learned to play well enough to participate regularly at area jam sessions. Other examples include the retired school principal who only began to play after retirement and now plays weekly at nursing homes, or the Harvard University graduate who came to the CTAA looking for a teacher and now plays solos on her own. Lodge 97, Placedo met on September 13, 2013, at the Lodge 32, Victoria’s building. A meal of fried chicken was provided by the lodge. Members attending brought side dishes. Several of the dishes were from the new SPJST SPJST Tasty Traditions cookbook. There was corn bread, macaroni salad, fruit salad, potato casserole, cinnamon cake, cookies, cinnamon rice, green beans, and cole slaw. We had to wait a few minutes on the chicken from HEB. It seems the order got mixed up. We visited for a while, and before you know it, the chicken was being brought in by an HEB person. It was nice and fresh. A wonderful meal it was! My Trip to Israel and Jordan My sister Lil Kosarek and friends Joe and Joyce Ehrenberger of Dallas and I traveled to the Holy Lands for a two-week visit. We flew into Tel Aviv and arrived just in time for dinner and to meet our fellow travelers. There was a group of 14 from Cleveland (and one person even knew about Sokol) plus others for a total count of 29. All were very nice and congenial, and we all had a good time. The first day out was a Sunday. Our first stop was at the site where prophet Jonah started his journey that left him in the belly of a whale and where Andromeda was tied to a rock as a sacrifice to a sea monster before being saved by Perseu. We went inside St. Peter’s church next door with a Catholic mass in progress in English with a large screen on the side with words to an English song, which we sing in my church, that the congregation was singing. We soon noticed that all signs were in Hebrew and English, everyone spoke English, and prices quoted were always in US dollars. I had purchased some Shekels before leaving home and then had problems in getting rid of them. We toured Tel Aviv, explored the Market, and drove to Haifa with a stop in Caesarea to see the ancient theater, aqueduct, and Hippodrome. We rode the cable car to view

the white cliffs, visited the UNESCO World Heritage site of Acre to see Crusaders’ Hall and Al Jazar Mosque, toured the Hanging Baha’l Gardens, and had a tour of the Carmel Winery where we were able to sample and purchase some wines. Next, it was on to Nazareth to see the Church of the Annunciation which is the location where Mary was visited by the Archangel Gabriel and was told that God had selected her to be the mother of Jesus. Then, it was on to Lippori National Park, known for its mosaics including the “Mona Lisa of Galilee” which was on the very top of a hill. Next visit was to Cana to view the wedding church, and one couple from Cleveland had arranged to have their wedding vowels renewed, which was so special to all of us. It was here we saw, and it is believed, to be one of the jars from the wedding of Cana where Mary told Jesus that all the wine was gone, and he told her to fill the six jars with water which he changed into wine. Next, a visit to Tabagha and Capernaum, villages where Jesus was said to have made local fishermen into “fishers of men” and where he multiplied the loaves and the fish to feed the multitudes. We enjoyed the views of Galilee from the Mount of Beatitudes and all along the way our guide talked about Israel culture and traditions. He was Arabic so he also told us of his culture and traditions. He was so knowledgeable of both cultures. Our next stop was the City of Jerusalem by way of the Jericho. We visited Mount Olivet for a panoramic view of the Old City with a visit to the Garden of Gethsemane. This evening we had a night tour of Jerusalem before arriving at the ruins of the Tower of David where we enjoyed a spectacular sound and light show. It was cold in the evening, and we were told to wear the warmest of clothes we had. Next morning, we went to Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Memorial Museum which contains the world’s largest collection of information on the Holocaust, and we also went through the Children’s Museum which was dark and had tiny flickering lights with a hand rail to guide us through while the names of all the children that died were read off. It was so very sad. We also went to the Museum to see the Dead Sea Scrolls. Later, we went to Bethlehem, a Palestinian city, to see the Church of the Nativity. We had to wait in line for about an hour to go down to see where Mary gave birth to Jesus. Next day, we journeyed into the desert, rode a cable car up to the fortress of

Masada, and walked the rest of the way to the top. We had lunch at a hotel on the Dead Sea where several of us went into the famously salty waters where you can float. Joyce and I didn’t try to float, we just went in a short way and sat down. When we left, we were told the camels were waiting and sure enough, out in the middle of this huge desert, we come to a place which looked like tent city, several camels were there, and all of us went for a ride. It was two persons per camel. Lil got on first, sat in the back, and by the time I barely got one foot over, the camel started getting up. Thank goodness, I had a good hold of the bar and held on. Otherwise, I would have tumbled off head first. (I thought to myself, I’m a former Sokol gymnast and I can hold on.) This was in the village of Kfar Hanokdim where later we sat on pillows, served hot tea, and were told of their customs (very interesting.) Then we were served a traditional Bedouin dinner in another tent where we sat at tables with benches. Their meals always consist of small salad bowls with various vegetables served family-style then a large round tray with pita bread on bottom, rice in middle with roasted chicken. It was very tasty. In Jerusalem, we visited the Wailing Wall where Jews traditionally gather for prayer. I noticed that it was fenced off, and there was a fence down the middle. We were told the ladies go to the section on the right, and men go to the left. I also noticed that there were lots of women—one had to wait a few minutes just to be able to touch the wall, while on the men’s side, there were only a few men, and their section was much larger. We had a nice Jewish couple from Cleveland so I asked why there were such few men. He showed me on his camera that the men are also allowed to go inside and that it was full. All of us put little notes in between the bricks with our prayers. On our last day in Jerusalem, we visited King David’s Tomb on Mount Zion and the Upper Room where Jesus held the Last Supper. Then, we followed the Via Dolorosa (Stations of the Cross) to the Church of Holy Sepulcher. A few of the stations had a small chapel, with the number on the outside, sometimes it was just a number, and all this was in narrow alleys with shops on both sides and packed with people. The last four stations were inside the Church of Holy Sepulcher. The 14th Station, where Jesus is laid in the Tomb, was a two-hour line, and we ran out of time. I was disappointed in the Stations, and in telling my friend Anna

Johnson about this, she said she knew what it was like as she has seen it on television. (Maybe I need to watch more television!) About half of the group left for home while 14 of us stayed to go to Jordan. We had a group visa, but we had to go through customs which was not a problem. Our Israel bus driver took us to the border where we got off the bus, got our luggage, and walked across the street where we were picked up by a Jordan bus, new driver, and Jordan tour guide. We continued on. We traveled to Petra, a city lost to the outside world for centuries which is carved into the red rocks of Mount Hor. It was a nice, long walk to the center which had tombs, caves, and carvings all along the way. We were told that people lived here in tents until in 1985 when the government came in, moved the people to apartments, and opened the area to visitors. Next day, we visited Madaba, a city of mosaics, St. George’s Church, and Mount Nebo where it is believed that Moses is buried. We ended up in Amman, capital of Jordan, which is a beautiful city built on mountains. Originally, only seven mountains were inhabited, and today, 21 mountains are inhabited. We visited more castles, temple ruins, and took a walk through the market. All made sure we didn’t lose our guide as we would not have found our way out. On our last day, we left our hotel at 10 p.m. to catch a 3 a.m. flight home. With a layover in Frankfurt, we arrived at DFW at 2:15 p.m. The food was good, we stayed in five-star hotels and made many new, good friends, especially from Cleveland. We saw so much and did so much that it is not possible to write about it all so I have just mentioned a few of the highlights. Just to think . . . we walked where Jesus is believed to have walked which made it all so spiritual and special. Everything was always, “believed to be” but that was okay. It was still so special. We all agreed it was a spiritual, wonderful, memorable, and educational trip. To my stained glass artist friends, John and Irmgard Kebrle of Dallas, we didn’t see any Hard Rock Cafes to see if they had one of your windows. Also to Rome Milan, we didn’t see any Sokols, which your friend mentioned being in Israel. My camera was always already. So Until, Keep Smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

A good group of people came from Lodge 229, Abilene; Lodge 215, South Plains; and Lodge 49, Rowena. We were also happy to have Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Horak, and State Youth Director Lynette Talasek with us for the day. adults. Fourteen Christmas ornaments were entered into the Christmas ornament contest, and I am glad I did not have to judge. The district really has some creative youth. The first place winners were Holt Teplicek (ages kindergarten through eight years) with a bottle cap snowman; ages nine to 11 years Charles Engel with a light bulb reindeer; ages 12 to 14 years - Brandon Teplicek with a seashell angel; and ages 15 to high school senior - Ana Fuentes with a bottle cap Christmas tree. All of the ornaments were so neat and creative. In my opinion, they were all winners! There were four contests for all members present, with a total of 17 entries. In the baked goods, Sylvia Rollwitz won first place with her pecan pie cookies. In canned goods, first place went to Brad Teplicek with his mesquite bean jelly. First place in needlework went to Tammy Copeland with her footprint cross-stitch design, and in the sewing category, Janeece Williams won first place with her

quilted purse. What fun! Thank you to Lodge 49 officers and members for working to make the day the success it was, to the District Four officers for their help, especially FAC Janeece Williams, the Home Office people who took time to attend, and all members who came and participated. It was a cool, damp, fun fall day! Beverly Teplicek District Four Youth Counselor —SPJST—

Lodge 18, Elgin youth: everyone needs a helping hand

Dear Věstník, I’m really enjoying school this year. My brother started school this year, and I’m glad we are together. We are learning lots and making new friends. We are having lots of fun and growing fast. I’m in second grade, and my brother is in kindergarten. My little cousin started pre-k this year. I can’t wait for the holidays when everyone can be with their families. I wish everyone would stop and look at

things that are important. Everyone is too busy and forgot about being a helper. The world is getting worse, too. Much is happening and needs to go back to caring about each other. We should be helpful to many and stop thinking of ourselves. That is what SPJST teaches you. Everyone needs a helping hand. Jayden Flores —SPJST—

The meeting was brought to order by President Jason Sims and after the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, we had a moment of silence for our departed members and the troops serving for our country. Old business was the September Czechfest and our dancing beseda earlier for the program at the fair. New business was our community service project for Make a Difference Day on Saturday, October 26. Youth report was a reminder to be at the lodge on Saturday by 10 a.m. to help with the hygiene kits we will be putting together. Additionally, our next meeting will be on Sunday, November 17 at 1 p.m. The meeting was then adjourned, and we were let loose to go enjoy the midway and other attractions at the fair. Fraternally, Elisabeth Cowan, Secretary —SPJST—

Czech Heritage Museum hosts open house for RVOS

The Czech Heritage Museum hosted an open house for RVOS employees, officers, and directors on October 8, 2013. SPJST co-hosted the event by providing refreshments and support with its Home Office staff. The evening was an opportunity for the museum to thank RVOS for its support. The May hail storm in Temple damaged five of the six air conditioning units and also damaged portions of the roof. The museum had limited air conditioning during the hot summer. RVOS, as the museum’s insurer, stepped up to help the museum and covered the cost of replacement of all five units and installation of a DuroLast roof over the existing old and new roofs. Without cooperation of all parties, the repairs might not have happened without substantial costs to the museum. RVOS employees and their families went on tours, explored the library, browsed the gift store, and enjoyed the live music provided by accordion player Mike Middleton. Special guests for the evening included RVOS President Wiley Shockley, RVOS Corporate Secretary James

Czech Heritage Museum hosted “Czech Night at the Museum” on October 22, 2013. Frankie Klinkovsky taught a dozen students to recite “The Lord’s Prayer” in the Czech language. Frankie told stories about his family and their immigration to America. Students wanted to learn more than the prayer and Frankie taught a variety of words to his students. Several children were also in attendance and enjoyed the puppets, puppet theatre, and crafts. Frankie also discussed benefits of SPJST membership. SPJST provided refreshments and door prizes of SPJST Tasty Traditions cookbook. Door prizes were won by Helen Newman and Aryanette Mesecke. Texas Czech Genealogical Society Delivers Special Treats to Special People

You never know which event will forever leave a lasting impression. When Patsy and Kayla Robertson, along with Leroy “Malinky” and Charlene Hurta left the Czech Catholic Home for the Aged in Hillje, Texas, on Thursday, October 10, 2013, they each knew they had been blessed in a special way. Invited to arrive early for a wonderful sandwich luncheon with all the trimmings, Malinky, also known as the Cookie Monster at home among the grandkids, was overjoyed with the delicious homemade peanut butter cookies made especially for us by the kitchen staff. Following lunch, we went to the Sunroom where TCGS gave each resident a special fall treat bag containing three pairs of socks (which had been specially made in the Czech Republic), crackers, fruit,

and fruit cups. While not in his full clown costume, Malinky began making balloon animals for each resident and staff member. To see the smiles and visit with each allowed us to depart with the peacefulness of having received a true blessing. We are extremely proud to have been able to share a few brief moments in time with the wonderful residents and staff of the Czech Catholic Home for the Aged. But . . . we will never be able to express our full gratitude for the warmth and joy we received. Charlene Hurta, TCGS President Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy —SPJST—

Czech Heritage Museum sets Nov. 19 night at the museum

The Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center will be hosting another “Czech Night at the Museum” on Tuesday, November 19, 2013, at the museum, located at 119 West French in Temple, Texas. The night’s entertainment will be tarok or taroky lessons with champion Jimmy Coufal. This ancient European card game has several spelling variations including tarok, taroky, and tarock, according to champion player Jimmy Coufal. The game is popular in Europe, where it has been played since before the Middle Ages. Similar to a standard deck of cards, there are four suits in taroky—hearts, spades, clubs, and diamonds. There are the traditional three face cards of king, queen, jack, and an additional
