Big Tex is Heavy!
Visiting Dallas for the Texas State Fair was awesome. I tried many new foods (most were fried), saw African acrobats, and helped run the SPJST booth that rested outside the African American Museum. We were positioned in the perfect spot (right across from the stage) to view the Slovak display of colors in the flags and costumes and enjoy the traditional dances. It reminded me of the 50th anniversary celebration in Houston a few weeks ago where similar exhibitions were performed. Our booth sat up on a little hill just inside one of the main fair gates and caught the attention of visitors walking through the festivities. Directly across from us, the car show exit landed people in sight of the tent and stage. I talked to many people during my three-hour shift, some of whom weren’t knowledgeable about SPJST. I enjoyed sharing the organization’s history, discussing the awesome youth program, and providing information about the fraternal acts we perform
across the state. I was pleasantly surprised to discover many of our booth visitors were involved in the organization already. The kids enjoyed trying to guess the number of candy corn and the bean bag game we sponsored at the booth. Besides running the booth, exploring the Fair later in the day was really fun. We went into the museum dedicated to Big Tex and watched a film on his rebuilding after the fire last year. It was truly inspiring seeing how a lot of people came together to rebuild the legend in time for the State Fair. The museum was interesting, and my sister and I left our farewells on a post-it board as a tribute to Tex. After the museum, we headed toward the African acrobats show. We found a spot to sit in front and enjoyed watching them limbo under a 12-inch stick, do flips while jumping rope, and building human pyramids. We wandered through the truck zone and visited a trailer dedicated to the Dallas Cow-

The Boy and the Politicians Once upon a time, there was a very intelligent boy called Lewis. Lewis had always wondered why there were always two politicians on TV arguing. So he asked his parents, “Mom, Dad, why do those men go on TV and argue?” To which his parents answered, “Lewis, they’re politicians. Their job is to make the people of our country happier.” Lewis was not satisfied with this answer and said, “But it doesn’t make sense – how can they be working for us when you can see them arguing like that. That’s not working for us at all!” His parents replied, “At the end of the day, a person who is truly working for us will have a clean conscience . . . he’ll be able to sleep at night. Go to sleep, Lewis, darling, and don’t think about the politicians anymore. All you need to do is work hard at school and not worry about them.”

From the President’s Department State FAC shares November Fraternal Updates
Fraternalist of the Year Program Seeks to Recognize Devotion and Service Through the Fraternalist of the Year program, SPJST lodges honor lodge members who through example and accomplishment have provided outstanding fraternal service to their lodge, society, and community during the past year. Please complete the SPJST 2013 Fraternalist of the Year program nominating form. If you need a form, you may go online to www.spjst.org and download the form or contact Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez at the Home Office. I hope that every active lodge considers designating a Fraternalist of the Year in 2013 — someone who has shown a strong commitment to SPJST while making a tireless effort to make
a positive difference in the lives of others. Your local lodge Fraternalist of the Year may be chosen in a variety of ways. The lodge decides upon the method that works best for you. The main emphasis should be on making sure that all adult members 16 or older be considered without bias and that the member’s effort was in some way exceptional or outstanding. SPJST Fraternalist of the Year forms will be reviewed by an outside fraternal organization to select the SPJST Fraternalist of the Year and honorable mention candidates. For that reason, we ask that your nomination form for the Fraternalist of the Year be returned to the office of the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator by December 13. Late submissions will be accepted; however, because of
4

the time element involved, they may not be considered for SPJST Fraternalist of the Year honors. All lodge honorees will be recognized at the annual Awards Banquet to be held on Saturday, January 25, 2014, at Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center in Temple. All other deadline dates remain the same. They are: January 2, 2014 New Officers – address, phone listing and email.
January 10, 2014 Year-End Fraternal Incentive Report and Year-End Support, and Community Services Report February 14, 2014 Outgoing Officer Awards
May 15, 2014 990 and 990-T to IRS and copy to Home Office
The end of another year is rapidly approaching. Many lodges have had a very productive and successful year. This is the time of year when lodges across the state will be electing leaders for the coming year. Has your lodge moved forward? Has your lodge met all of its goals? Has your lodge completed all of its projects planned for the year in your community? Has your lodge set goals for 2014? Keeping these questions in mind, they may help you make choices on who you will elect to keep your lodge moving forward in the coming year. It is the duty of all members to provide leaders of their lodge with suggestions, ideas, and assistance. When asked to assist with activities throughout the year, please help your lodge officers. Fraternalism works best when every member is involved in the process. While lodges are electing new officers, this would also be an excellent time to check the back page of the Vestnik for your meeting date and time. If any of this information has changed, please contact Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny (800) 727-7578 and have her update your lodge information.
Outgoing Officers With the election of new officers, do not forget to honor your officers who have given their time and dedication to your lodge. Honor your outgoing leaders by giving them an
outgoing officer plaque. Any officer who is not elected to serve in 2014 and does not seek re-election in future years is eligible. The recipient must be a current SPJST member and must be active at the time of selection. The plaques should be awarded at your local lodge meetings.
100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive will continue through March 2014. All members are encouraged to give their support as you have in the past. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Donations of any amount will be accepted and added to the general scholarship fund that is maintained by the Home Office. No amount is too small or too large.
Veterans Day On November 11, please remember to honor our veterans who have bravely answered the call to defend our right of freedom, aided, and comforted our friends and allies, and have turned away countless aggressors. We, as a nation, can never repay our debt of gratitude to the many men and women who died in the line of battle or were wounded to protect the right of our freedom. Please pause on this day and at your local lodge meeting (even if it is after November 11) to recognize and thank the veterans and the many military men and women who have fought in the past and are still fighting today to protect our freedom. By doing this at your local lodge meeting, this will fulfill item number 13 on your lodge Fraternal Act.
Christmas Open House Please make plans to be in Temple on Monday, December 2. This is the date of the City of Temple’s annual Christmas parade and tree lighting. Again, this year, SPJST will participate in the parade so come out to see what marvelous creation Vestnik Edi-
tor Melanie Zavodny, husband David Nauert, and assistant Katherine Morris come up with. They always do such an outstanding job decorating. Following the parade, SPJST will host the annual Christmas Open House at the Home Office, located at 520 North Main Street in Temple. What a great time to visit the Home Office and socialize with fellow SPJST members! Refreshments will be served and again, there is a rumor that Santa and Mrs. Claus will stop by for a visit at the Home Office. Spread the word about this fun event. Watch the Vestnik for additional details as they become available.
Fraternal Alliance of Texas Bowling Tournament and Silent Auction Start making plans now to be in New Braunfels on Saturday, February 8, 2014, at Fiesta Lanes, located at 1202 Huisache Avenue (behind HEB - Walnut Street) for the Ninth Annual FAOT (Fraternal Alliance Of Texas) Bowling Tournament to raise funds for scholarships. All lodges and/or members are encouraged to bring an item for the silent auction, which will be held in conjunction with the bowling tournament to raise additional funds. Those who participated in past years will testify that it was a fun day filled with lots of fraternalism shared by all while raising money for a worthy cause. Teams will consist of five members - any combination of men and women. Registration will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday with bowling starting at noon. A handicap of 80 percent of 200 per game will be added to the total score following the completion of the third game. All teams are encouraged to preregister by February 1. FAOT Scholarship Winners Congratulations to Elizabeth Ann Hoelscher of Lodge 47, Seaton in District Two and Julie Reagan Langer of Lodge 25, Ennis in District Three as the 2013 SPJST winners in the Fraternal Alliance of Texas Scholarships.

ber to allocate the funds for the losses incurred during the April 17 West Explosion. We discussed the rebuilding of Lone Star Hall and Sokol Gym. Mary Beth Dulock will be getting some plans drawn up and wants our President Freddie Kaluza to take a look at the architectural design of the building. They will build the gym and hall with adjoining kitchen and restrooms between the two buildings. They hope to seat at least 500 people. Freddie Kaluza let the members know they took part of the hall’s floor to put in the new hall on display. An architect from TSTC was contacted for advice on the construction. The hall will be moved a little further back than it was before. It was reported by Sokol that the insurance proceeds paid the loan on the hall so they will need extra funds to rebuild. The metal from the hall was sold by the demolition crew to offset the cost of demolishing the hall and gym. The list was passed around to see if anyone knew these members. Our lodge was privileged to have District Seven Director Bob Bayer and
wife Polly at our meeting. They both looked great. Bob gave us some good news about our lodge and information about what is happening at other events. It’s also so nice to have them attend our meetings. FAC/Vice President Jerry Sijansky gave us his report. He told a story about the Czech symbol of the two tail lion, that was very interesting. Small Towns
Those who grew up in small towns will laugh when they read this. Those who didn’t will be in disbelief and won’t understand how true it is. You can name everyone you graduated with.
You know what 4-H means. You went to parties at a pasture, barn, gravel pit, or in the middle of a dirt road. You used to ‘drag’ Main. You could never buy cigarettes because all the store clerks knew how old you were (and if you were old enough, they’d tell your parents anyhow.) Besides, where would you get the money? When you did find somebody old enough and brave enough to buy cigarettes, you still had to go out into the country and drive on back roads to smoke them. You knew which section of the ditch you would find the beer your buyer dropped off. It was cool to date somebody from the neighboring town. The whole school went to the same party after graduation. You didn’t give directions by street names but rather by references. Turn

by Nelson’s house, go two blocks to Anderson’s, and it’s four houses left of the track field. The golf course had only nine holes. You couldn’t help but date a friend’s ex-boyfriend/girlfriend. Your car stayed filthy because of the dirt roads, and you will never own a dark vehicle for this reason. The town next to you was considered ‘trashy’ or ‘snooty,’ but was actually just like your town. You referred to anyone with a house newer than 1955 as the ‘rich’ people. The people in the ‘big city’ dressed funny, and then you picked up the trend two years later. Anyone you wanted could be found at the local gas station or the dairybar/Queen. You saw at least one friend a week driving a tractor through town or one of your friends driving a grain truck to

school occasionally. The gym teacher suggested you haul hay for the summer to get stronger. Directions were given using THE stop light as a reference. When you decided to walk somewhere for exercise, five people would pull over and ask if you wanted a ride. Your teachers called you by your older siblings’ names. Your teachers remembered when they taught your parents. You could charge at any local store or write checks without any ID. There was no McDonald’s. The closest mall was over an hour away. It was normal to see an old man riding through town on a riding lawn mower. Most people went by a nickname. —Submitted by Mark Rebecek Lodge 79, Corpus Christi —SPJST—
SPJST Participates in 50th Annual Slavic Heritage Festival
The 2013 festival was especially noteworthy in that it was the 50th annual celebration. The festival was initiated 50 years ago by Father Dmytro Blazejowsky, Bishop John L. Morkovsky, and Maurice Haffernik. This year’s festival was held on Sunday, September 29 at Knights of Columbus Hall, located at 607 East Whitney in Houston. The Croatians, Czechs, Polish, and Ukrainians expressed their solidarity by beginning the day with a mass at 10 a.m. in the hall. The festivities, celebrating the unique
features of each of the groups, was held between 12 noon and 6 p.m. Among the featured performers were SPJST Districts One and Two Beseda Dancers. State King Sammy Hoggard, State Queen Julia Zavodny, and District Five Ryan and Bronikowski and Queen Denae Bronikowski also participated in the program. This was a very fast year. Now is the time for families to come together and be thankful for what is important—our health, relationships, and blessings; and this is the time of the year our youth can make a big difference in someone else’s life. There are many families having a hard time making ends meet. Youth leaders, challenge your youth to help out a family in need in your local community, help stock your local food pantry, help an elderly neighbor by rak-
ing the fallen leaves in their yard, or contact your local Salvation Army to register to help with the Red Kettle Christmas Drive. Remind your youth to submit photos and a short write up about this challenge to Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny. Our adult members love to read about our youth and their activities. On October 20, I traveled to Dallas, Texas, with the Royalty and their families to attend the Heritage Festival at the State Fair of Texas. The State Royalty met and visited with State Fair attendees at the SPJST booth. There were two guessing games that visitors took chances on guessing for an opportunity to win some really great SPJST prizes. We also had a bean bag toss game where we had lots of youth participants. After introducing our State Royalty on stage, the youth walked around the fair grounds and visited some of the booths. This year, the Heritage Festival was well attended by SPJST youth. District Two Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky arranged to have two circles of youth perform the beseda dance on the main

stage. District Three had one circle of youth and two circles of adults from Lodge 84, Dallas perform the long version of the beseda and a circle of Czech Children Dancers of Dallas that performed a handkerchief dance. Thanks to District Three Youth Counselor Bessie Petr and Assistant Youth Counselor Lynda Novak for the wonderful Czech food: cabbage rolls, sausage and sauerkraut, kolaches, and strudel. October was a very busy month. I attended several district fall fun day meetings. I really enjoyed judging contests and playing bingo and Bunco. I have also attended several successful membership drives. If you have not had a membership drive this year, please consider doing so and remember to take advantage of your yearly mailout that the Home Office provides for your youth club. During November and December, lodges host many different parties for their members—both active and nonactive. Youth leaders, I would like to highly encourage you to have some type of activity for these young people to do at these parties. It can be some-

On Wednesday, October 23, 2013, the District Two Beseda Dancers performed at S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1, Taylor. They had one circle performing. The residents enjoyed watching the youth dance this traditional Czech dance. It was nice to see the residents smile while they danced and clap when they finished. Before it was time to perform, the dancers visited with some of the residents.
Dancers were Aaron and Kara Kaderka, Brandon and Hailey Girod, Emma Regan, Kayla Wuensche, Makayla Newsom, and Ryan Davidson. Cristy Girod Assistant District Two Youth Counselor —SPJST—

Youth Development Workshop This year, the Youth Development Workshop is going to be a little different. Instead of conducting the workshop in Temple, each District Youth Counselor will conduct the meeting within their districts. If you have a topic that you would like to see covered, please email your District Youth Counselor your idea. Watch the Vestnik and your email for more information about the upcoming Youth Development
Workshop in your district.

your quarterly and merit reports before December 15. This is the second quarterly report for September, October, and November. Those of you that email the electronic quarterly report into the youth office need to submit the sign-in sheet with the electronic file. This took the place of the youth having to initial the paper quarterly report. You can send the sign-in sheet by scanning the page, mailing or faxing to my office. The fax number for the Fraternal Department is (254) 774-7447. These reports help to determine the funding your youth club will receive at the spring meeting and how much money your district receives for its youth activities. Youth clubs that do not submit their quarterly and merit reports on time will lose out on their incentives. This can mean losing hundreds of dollars for your youth club. 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive This year’s goal is to raise $25,000. This is in addition to the allocation
which the Supreme Lodge has made. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Thanks to all of the young people and youth clubs who contribute to this wonderful program. Remember that no contribution is too big or small. All young people who donate at least $2 will receive two merit points. All young people who donate at least $5 will also receive a certificate. Veterans Day Veterans Day is Monday, November 11. Please take time and remember our veterans at your next youth club meeting in November. Many of you live by or close to a veterans hospital or nursing center. Veterans enjoy visits from the youth and cards or other tokens of appreciation—not just on Veterans Day, but any day of the year. Please visit www.va.gov to learn more about a cen-
ter in your area and who to contact for opportunities to help.

Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club Makes A Difference at S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living
Dear Readers, Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club wanted to participate in Make a Difference Day this year. So we decided to host a bingo hour at S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living Facility in Taylor from 2 to 3 p.m. We had pieces of homemade cake as the bingo prizes . . . a little more than 50 of them! The residents were anxious for us to get the room set up for the hour of fun. We were so excited to see how quickly the room filled up with residents ready to play. At the last count, there were 27 residents participating in bingo.
Lodge 29 Assistant Youth Leader Connie Voigt called out the numbers while Youth Leader Cristy Girod and the youth club members present helped the residents watch their cards. Colten Voigt and Dounia Mohad delivered prizes to the bingo winners. Youth in attendance were Brandon and Hailey Girod, Kylee Halbrook, Colten Voigt, and Dounia and Basil Mohad. The residents were wonderful. They applauded our time together and were very excited to hear that we will definitely come do this again. Once we gave out the last prize, some resi-
dents needed help taking their winnings to their room. So some of the youth walked with them to their rooms. One dear gentleman even got a ride back to his room while Hailey and Kylee pushed him in his walker. We appreciate each and every person that came to play bingo with us. We truly hope it made a difference in their day. It definitely made a difference in ours! Cristy Girod, Youth Leader —SPJST—

Lesikar family restores historic Bell County cemetery
Many small cemeteries in rural and urban areas throughout Texas are in need of urgent care. Often, they are neglected and vandalized, and sometimes abandoned. The Lesikar Cemetery sits east of Seaton on Hruskaville Road on the south side of Highway 53. It is a small cemetery comprising of only five graves. Established in 1885, the first burial was that of Frantiska Lesikar (20 Dec 1884 - 8 Feb 1885). She was the daughter of John and Teresie (Schiller) Lesikar. The other four graves are children of Frank and Anna (Trlica) Lesikar: Albina (1889 -1889), Frantisek (25 Nov 1898 - 3 Dec 1898), Anna (22 Oct 1890 - 30 Dec 1890), and Albina (4 Jun 1901- 7 Dec 1901). It is believed that the children died from complications of pneumonia. At the 2012 Lesikar family reunion, the issue of the poor condition of the cemetery was brought up. The idea to restore the cemetery was met with overwhelming support. Many family members contributed to the restoration project. Richard Lesikar of Granbury is a nephew to four of the
children that are buried in this tiny, historic family cemetery. Richard volunteered to oversee the project and began the task of finding the best way to make the cemetery as maintenance free as possible. After much consideration, it was decided to remove the headstones so they could be leveled and reset. No headstone was found for Albina (1889-1889), therefore she was added to the headstone of her younger sister, Albina (4 Jun 1901-7 Dec 1901). A reinforced 8-foot by 8-foot by 12-inch concrete slab was poured to insure that the area would be free of weeds and the headstones would remain level. The finishing touch was the addition of a metal sign placed in front of the graves proclaiming: “Lesikar Cemetery established 1885.” At the conclusion of the annual Lesikar reunion on October 13, 2013, a re-dedication ceremony was held at the site. Mark your calendars and join the party on Friday, November 8, 2013, at SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, located at 1435 Beall in Houston. We’re hosting a Polka for the Park benefit from 8:30 p.m. to 12 midnight to raise money for our good friends who were affected by the plant explosion in West, Texas. The evening of fundraising will be full of entertainment, including live and silent auctions and a dance as we assist our fellow Texans in rebuilding their community. Grammy-winning epic band Brave Combo will be headlining the event. We hope you will join us in our efforts to help our neighbors to the north rebuild their beloved city park that will honor first responders. As many of you know, my mom hails from West, Texas, and our cousin Tommy Muska is the mayor. Please forward this invitation to friends and family so we can pack the hall for a great cause and a great time. For more information, call (832) 2248421 See you there! Similar to a standard deck of cards, there are four suits in taroky—hearts, spades, clubs, and diamonds. There are the traditional three face cards of king, queen, jack, and an additional face card—the rider. There is a fifth suit in the 54-card deck is a 21-card suit of cards numbered with Roman Numerals. This fifth suit is the trump

Expressions of Gratitude
“Homey” Environment
“Some brief reflections of our life at S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living Community”
The facility has a “homey” environment, yet it is decorated with class. We like it for my mother because we are confidant she is in a secure and safe place. She gets three nourishing meals per day, gets her medication given at the right times, has her housekeeping taken care of weekly, can go to church, beauty shop, and exercise right there in the facility. There are so many activities for our mom in the facility as well as out and about taking the “SPJST Bus” for outings. Sometimes she must pick and choose because there is more to do than time allows. From the director to receptionist, volunteers, cooking staff, nurse, maintenance, and housekeepers, etc. everyone is so friendly and gets to know each resident by name. The thing we like most though is that the family is encouraged to participate in activities and enjoy meals with your family member. It is great, too, that my sister from out of town is allowed to spend the night when she comes for a visit. We especially like the common areas we can reserve when many of us visit at the same time. If you are looking for a place for a loved one where you don’t have to worry about them, the S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living in Taylor is the place you are looking for. —Charlotte S. Albert of Thrall, Texas (Daughter of resident Arlene Schneider)
Friendly Neighbors and Good Friends
I can recommend S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living as a good place to live for several good reasons. You have your own apartment, furnished with your own things. There are personal assistants to assist you with what you need. The staff will assist you with medication, if needed. We have tasty and healthy full meals— three a day. We have our choice of games and crafts, also a variety of entertainment and church activities. Our neighbors are friendly, and we make good friends. —Abby Johnson, Resident
Many Advantages 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Small table dining. My two-room single person suite with bath. Furnishings and pictures from home. Plenty of plugs for sound system. The cleaning of apartments plus complimentary laundry. 6. Medicines managed. I do not have to schedule my own. 7. Meals are delicious. I have to guard against overeating.
These are just a few of the advantages . . . there are many more! —J. Noble Atkins, Resident
Beautiful Place and the Staff is Great
My name is Ruby Rakes. My husband Clarence and I have been married for 63 years. We came to S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living in March 2012. We moved here from Dumas, Texas, a small town north of Amarillo in the Panhandle. Our reason for moving here is that our daughter and her husband live here in Taylor, and we needed to be near them. We also have some of our grandchildren and great-grandchildren that are in the area, too. We feel fortunate to be living in such a beautiful place. The staff is great, and they are very helpful in making everything pleasant. We find the staff and residents friendly and always willing to help. We enjoy the church services, musical entertainment, and bingo. There is always some kind of entertainment we can choose to attend. We would recommend S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living to anyone. —Clarence and Ruby Rakes, Residents
Attentive Care; Close-Knit, Family-Oriented
I can’t say enough about what a blessing it is for my father to live at S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living in Taylor. The staff is caring, dedicated, reliable, and professional. They take a personal interest in each of the residents and make everyone feel welcome. They offer physical fitness and social activities that are so important in maintaining the well-being of the residents. It has been my experience and observation that the staff provides the attentive care that enables my father to “feel at home.” It gives my family and I great peace of mind knowing that he is safe, happy, and well-cared for in a close-knit family-oriented community. —Theresa Hajda (Daughter of resident V.J. Hajda)
Lots of Entertainment and Fun
I moved to Taylor when my son and his wife found this place this wonderful place. Everyone here is so friendly and nice. Staff, employees, and residents are so willing and able to help in so many ways. There are so many fun things to do here. Today, we visited the Blanton Museum of Art down at the University of Texas. It was wonderful. There is always something to do, exercise everyday in the week, and very well-attended. Lots of entertainment, bus trips, and more fun! I have used the exercise since I arrived, and it has certainly helped me physically. We have games, arts and crafts, painting, and more. —Ann Geil, Resident
