Inspiring Others

It’s probably true that most people who work with us will never

care as deeply as we do about building our business and serving our clients. If they did, they’d probably be working for themselves. Yet there’s a great deal we can do to raise the level of their commitment and inspire them to peak performance. The operative word in the preceding sentence is inspire. You can demand that people who work for you be punctual, or that they perform at a certain level of output, or even that they do things reasonably well. Yet real commitment can only be inspired. And, inspiring people is what great leaders like John F. Kennedy and Lee Iaccoca did best. How do great leaders such as these inspire others to commit themselves to their goals? It’s not just that they have charismatic personalities, or that they give a lot of high-powered motivational talks. What they do is communicate their vision so forcefully that other people adopt it as their own vision. For example, in the early sixties, President Kennedy set his sights on putting a man on the moon, and told the American people, “We can do it!” He said it with such conviction that masses of people believed it, and committed themselves to making it happen. And, sure enough, in less than a decade, the first human being had walked on the moon. Lee Iaccoca stepped into the ailing Chrysler Corporation and said, “We’re going to turn this company around!” With clear goals, a solid plan of action, and a strong conviction, he was able to inspire enough commitment from the U.S. Congress that he secured the largest loan ever made to a private company. Then he inspired enough commitment in thousands of Chrysler workers to enable the company to pay

back the loan ahead of schedule. That’s the formula for any leader to inspire commitment—clear goals, a solid plan of action, and a strong conviction. If you can communicate that to the people who work with you, you will have the kind of loyalty that makes them go the second mile. And the third and fourth miles if that’s what it takes to get the job done. —Nido R. Qubein President/CEO of Creatives Services, Inc.

Correction Last week’s Vestnik included a photo of Lodge 29, Taylor member Terry Skrhak who won several awards at the Hogeye Festival Barbecue Cook-Off in Elgin. We inadvertently left out one of Terry’s awards. Among his win of trophies and cash awards were for first and third in pork butt, first in sausage, second and third in ribs, and third in open pork. Congratulations, Terry, and we apologize for the omission. Important Holiday Deadlines Due to the Thanksgiving holidays, the deadline for the December 4 Vestnik will be Monday, November 25 at 5 p.m.

Lodge 8, Weimar plans holiday meeting

Lodge 8, Weimar members held their monthly meeting on October 28, 2013, at Leticia’s Mexican Restaurant in Weimar. Everyone enjoyed a Dutch treat meal of their choice. Present were 12 members and guests including District Six Director Karen Kaspar and State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Horak. The meeting was called to order by Erline Janik around 7 p.m. Due to the absence of Treasurer Carolyn Tobola, Mrs. Janik read the treasurer’s report, and it was approved.

Holiday Meeting—November 25 The November/December holiday meeting plans were discussed. These meetings will be combined for one big event on Monday, November 25. We welcome all Lodge 8 members to join us at Weimar Veterans Memorial Hall at 6:30 p.m. We will enjoy a turkey and dressing meal provided by the lodge and members. Please RSVP to Erline Janik (979) 562-2408 on or before Friday, November 22. Also, we encourage everyone to bring non-perishable food items to be donated to the food pantry. take pictures when it is completed so everyone can see this great work of art. We appreciate these ladies so much displaying their wonderful Godgiven talents on making this decorative painting for us. We are very excited about the new look. We want to thank Louis Mitchell from Rogers for donating the star on the front of the building. The old wooden one needed replacing. He wouldn’t accept any pay for it. We appreciate it so much. We hadn’t heard from our old faithful member Lillie Zajicek in some time. We checked with her family, and they said she is not doing so well. She has had some small strokes which have affected her memory. She is almost blind. I know Lillie must get very depressed. She is such a sweet person. We have missed her so much at our meetings. She and her late husband Joe have helped our lodge in so many ways through the years. We really miss Kathleen Jurca, another faithful member who no longer is able to attend the meetings. Faithful member Hilda Burtis fell this past week, and it is very difficult for her to get around. But with the help of Sandie Fischer, she attended the meeting. That proves what a devoted member Hilda is. RVOS’ annual meeting will be held in our SPJST building on October 20 at 2 p.m. Everyone is invited. Door prizes were drawn followed by a delicious meal. The next meeting will be on November 11 at 5 p.m. We hope to see you there. Fraternally, Dorothy Tomascik, Secretary —SPJST—

Lodge 191, Lufkin changes meeting dates

Only two more months left of this year. Where did the time go? Thank you, Nathan Ham and the Country Boys, for making our October dance so enjoyable, and thank you, George Scogin, for sitting in with them for a while with your saxophone. I know everyone had a good time. Nathan and his band will be back for the New Year’s Eve dance so put it on your calendar to remember to attend. The Halloween decorations were great; thanks to Andy and Maria Anderson and “gang.” A lot of work goes into getting our hall decorated for each dance. Be sure to thank them for a job well done; also the clean-up after the dance is a big job. The Halloween costume contest was won by Hanna Ellis, and she received a $25 gift certificate to Outback Steakhouse, and runners-up each received tickets for two to a dance of their choice, excluding New Year’s Eve. I did not get their names, but I will try to have it next month. The 50-50 drawing was won by Floyd Jopling, and he gave part of it back to the lodge. Thanks, Floyd. In November, we will dance to the music of Linda Kay and the Kool Katz. It should be a great evening for dancing, eating, and fellowship. Remember to bring food for the table. Thanks to all of you great cooks for being so good about bringing your favorite food. We always seem to have enough food and a such a variety. Lodge Meeting Change Our lodge meetings have been

Ladies Circle members of Lodge 92, Fort Worth were a little slow in arriving for our meeting on October 8, 2013, but they did come and were we glad. We had 38 members (one new one—Josephine Cox), four guests, and the gentlemen who come each month to play dominoes. It was fantastic to have each and every one who came; however, we did miss those who were unable to be with us. We began the meeting with our usual Pledge of Allegiance and gave a hearty welcome for our visitors. Gloria Farek brought her sister Margarette Bassage and husband Buster who were visiting from California. They have been with us several times before that we feel they are officially part of our group. Don and Pauline Morbitzer along with Lorinda Manasco were happy to have family members Sandra and Velma Filippone with them. We love it when families are in Fort Worth from out-of-town and agree to come along for a crazy meeting, wonderful lunch, and a couple of games of bingo. After receiving a sweet message and prayer from Theretta Praslicka, the minutes were read and approved.

Pauline Morbitzer gave the status of our finances and asked for names of those who were under the weather or in need of encouragement. As discussed last month, the annual catered lunch will be held in December. Information on several caterers was given, and after discussion, the decision was made to use Tootsie Telk, who operates her own catering service. We then moved on to our next order of business: a donation to the lodge hall. A suggestion was made and voted upon to have ceiling fans repaired if possible or replaced. Evelyn Scaff will research the project and bring information to the November meeting for a final determination. And last of all, President Marlene Bass announced that the annual craft sale would happen next month. The sale could also include items that were not “crafty or handmade” as well. Each member will be able to keep the proceeds from whatever her item(s) being sold brings. It will be fun to see who brings what. Birthdays celebrated were many; however, only three of the celebrants were attending. Janet Basham, Allison Hollenbach, and Bill Campbell were serenaded by the group, and pictures were taken. Although my report is late, we still want to send our “happies” to Mary Windham, Estelle Hurtik, Norma McLendon, and Monica Willenburg. A “shout out” was given for the

work our hostesses Lupe Esparza, Marie Keller, Darlene Tompkins, and Jo Ann Wilcox provided in setting up lunch and for the wonderful display of meat entrees. Lodge 92 ladies are still the best when it comes to preparing great food. It can’t be beat! Shirley Martin announced that St. Thomas was to hold a Las Vegas night and dinner on October 18. She has been working very hard helping to raise funds for the new church building that will be located in Lake Worth (I think). Other announcements made were regarding the Senior Citizen Fair being held at Will Rogers. The last announcement concerned the sale of chances for the beautiful quilt that was donated. The drawing will be held in December. In the absence of Sherrie Watkins, there was no information given on activities scheduled for the hall. We were sorry to learn that her father Albert Kubula had taken a turn for the worse and passed away later in the day. Mr. and Mrs. Kubula were a wonderful presence at so many of the Ladies Circle meetings, dances, and lodge meetings. Our sympathies go to Mrs. Kubala, Sherrie, and her entire family. Door prizes given were pumpkin cider, kitchen linens, a beautiful yellow mum plant, pumpkin lantern, potpourri, floral arrangement, tote bag, dolls, and a personal recipe book with cards. This activity is always one of the highlights of the day . . . as is the

fellowship and friendship with each other . . . as is the food . . . as is winning at bingo. My goodness! We really enjoy being together each month. Come join us—we miss you when you’re not there. New twists on a classic holiday celebration

(StatePoint) Thanksgiving traditionally marks the beginning of the holiday season. Ever since the Gimbel Brothers Department Store in Philadelphia put up the first Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1920, this decade became well known as the golden era of celebration, revelry and joy. Channel the spirit of the 1920s, by adding twists to your classic holiday celebration. From food to music to wine, there are plenty of stress-free ways to bring the lighthearted fun from this bygone era back to your holiday party:

• Skip flowers. Instead, create drama with eye-catching centerpieces of feather plumes draped in long strands of faux pearls. It’s a simple way to give the room a classic look.

• For a real crowd pleaser, fill the room with the smooth sounds of Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. Or use the room as your canvas to evoke the cozy atmosphere of a Norman Rockwell painting.

• Bring your celebration to life with a vibrant wine that fits every budget for under $10. According to French law and following a century-old tradition, Beaujolais Nouveau is released annually on the third Thursday of November with celebrations around the world. The first wine of the harvest, Beaujolais Nouveau is versatile and food-friendly – the perfect wine for every festive gathering. Traditionally served slightly chilled, this fruit-forward wine will please red and white wine lovers alike.

Whether you’re serving fun appetizers or a classic holiday meal, Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau is a great “go to” wine for a wide variety of dishes. To learn more about the history of the wine, visit www.Duboeuf.com. To add extra elegance to your table, try a splash of 1920s style and serve the wine in crystal glassware on

etched, vintage silver trays.

• For another fresh spin on the classic taste of the Golden Age, serve up this menu of 1920s-inspired dishes: curried deviled eggs, chorizo-stuffed mushrooms and cider glazed roast turkey. For dessert, bite-sized lemon cakes add a sweet surprise everyone will love.

Try out this tempting twist on the classic deviled eggs recipe from the 1920s, a perfect pairing with Beaujolais Nouveau. Curried Deviled Eggs

Ingredients • 6 eggs • 3 tablespoons Greek yogurt • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise • 1 tablespoon lemon juice • 2 teaspoons curry powder • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt • Paprika, for garnish

Directions: Place eggs in a saucepan and cover with enough cold water to cover the eggs by two inches. Bring water to a boil. Turn the heat to low, cover, and

cook for 1 minute. Remove from heat, and still covered, let rest for 12 minutes. Gently crack the egg shells and peel under cool running water, drying on paper towels. Slice eggs in half lengthwise. Reserve whites on a platter, and transfer the yolks to a bowl. Using a fork, mash yolks with all ingredients (except the garnish). Mix well, and evenly spoon mixture into whites. Sprinkle lightly with paprika and serve. Yield: One dozen deviled eggs

Fuss-Free Holiday Dessert Ideas

(StatePoint) Between decorating your home and preparing the year’s most important meal, you may lose steam by the time you get to the sweet stuff.

But creating holiday desserts that stand out doesn’t have to be a daunting prospect. There are simple things you can do to give treats flair, without spending hours slaving away. Whipped topping makes a perfect fuss-free topping on special occasion pies, cakes and cookies, as well as your everyday favorites like fruit, coffee and ice cream. Your family and guests will taste the difference, so be sure to use natural ingredients. For example, Reddiwip is made from real dairy cream, unlike other leading brands which have hydrogenated oils as their top ingredient. To deliciously top off your holiday meal, try this recipe for Apple Crumble Pie, where warm apple pie filling is topped with a brown sugar and oat crumble and served in a flaky pie crust. Want to save even more time? Consider picking up a frozen dessert pie, such as one from Marie Callender’s and top it off with Reddi-wip for a quicker, but still super tasty, dessert option. Ingredients • 1 frozen pie crust (9-inch), thawed • 1 can (21 oz each) apple pie filling

VӖSTNÍK

• 1/2 cup all-purpose flour • 1/2 cup quick-cooking rolled oats • 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon • 1/4 tsp. salt • 1/2 cup cold Parkay Original-stick (1/2 cup = 1 stick) Reddi-wip Original Dairy Whipped Topping

Directions • Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. Pierce bottom and side of pie crust lightly with fork. Bake 5 to 7 minutes, or until lightly browned. Cool slightly. Reduce oven temperature to 400 degrees F. • Pour pie filling into baked pie crust; set aside. Mix flour, oats, sugar, cinnamon and salt in medium bowl. Cut in Parkay with pastry blender or 2 knives until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle evenly over pie filling.

• Bake 25 minutes or until juices are bubbly and topping is golden brown. Cool slightly. Cut into 8 slices to serve. • Top with Reddi-wip, if desired. —SPJST—

Five tips for making the holidays more affordable

(StatePoint) Getting the perfect gift for everyone on your shopping list doesn’t mean you have to go over-budget. With the tips from the shopping experts at Dollar General, you can celebrate the season affordably without sacrificing the merriment.

• Décor: Whether you’re going for a classic look or a modern feel, you can deck the halls stylishly and on-budget at a discount retailer. Make your exterior inviting with a festive wreath and lights.

Decorate your tree with a wide selection of ornaments and ribbons, as well as homemade ornaments. Mini trees, snow globes, and scented candles can also add cheer in every room. Let the fireplace take center stage and make it glow with mantel décor and stockings on those extra-cold evenings.

• Gifts and stocking stuffers: With a large quantity of people on your shopping list from coworkers to cousins and teachers, save time and money by picking up a simple glass jar and filling it with their favorite candies and treats. You can also dress up the gift with a little ribbon and a $1 ornament. And don’t forget about the stocking stuffers. Dollar General offers a wide

15

range of great options for everyone on your list. For kids, skip the long lines, high prices and crowds at the toy store, and head to a discount retailer for a wide assortment of brand-name, affordable toys, dolls and electronics.

Save by buying toilet paper, paper towels and cleaning items in bulk online and have them delivered to your home for one less stop during the holidays.

• Hosting a crowd: If you will be hosting house guests for a winter party or for several days, stock up on basic household products before everyone arrives.

For more inspiration and coupons for your holidays, visit www.DollarGeneral.com. —SPJST—

• Baking: End your holiday meals on a sweet note by baking your own cake and holiday-themed cookies with simple mixes and pre-made frostings. This not only saves money, but also creates an activity the entire family can enjoy together.

• Staying Healthy: Avoid the physician this holiday by staying well as the colder temperatures arrive. Drinking lots of water and eating healthy fruits and vegetables can help keep you healthy this winter. Also consider taking a Rexall multivitamin to avoid the sniffles of the season.

Lodge 29, Taylor youth enjoys Six Flags

I’m Aaron Kaderka, and I like being a part of the SPJST Youth Club. For our reward, we went to Six Flags. We had a blast there with our friends.

District Six Youth Participate in Dozinky Czech Heritage Festival

District Six youth celebrated Czech Heritage Month by participating in the Wharton County Czech Heritage Society Dozinky Czech Harvest Festival on October 13, 2013, at Taiton Community Center. We had a fun-filled day listening to Czech music provided by Czechaholics. We ate a delicious Czech meal with homemade sauerkraut and kvasaky that was prepared by Bill Raley and Danny Hughes. And—best of all—there plenty of kolaches!

Many of the youth worked the cake walk booth. It was a rainy day, and the young men were helping the ladies in the door with umbrellas. I was really proud of the youth for their kindness. Wharton County Czech Heritage Society President Bill Raley had a display of

Czech articles such as glassware, clothing, books, and pottery from the Czech Republic. District Six Youth Counselor Lisa Bubela gave a demonstration to the youth on Czech articles such as the clothing and glassware, and she told them some of their ancestors came over

from the Old Country. Of course, the day did not go by without svacina. We had chicken noodle soup and much more. A great time was had by all. Youth members and parents from Lodges 4, Hallettsville; 30, Taiton; and 40, El Campo-Hillje participated. Fraternally, Lisa Bubela District Six Youth Counselor —SPJST—

2013 - 2014 Youth Club Member Update - Merit Points and Meeting Attendance

First Quarter Merit Points and Meeting Attendance The totals below in the column labeled “Pts” are merit points earned in the June to August 2013 youth year. This is total merit points for the 20132014 youth year thusfar. Please see “What is the Merit Point System?” for complete information about the contest. The number in the column labeled “Mtgs” is the number of meetings each youth club member has attended from June to August 2013 youth year. Please see “What is an Active Youth Member?” below to determine number of meetings needed to participate in youth activities.

What is the Merit Point System? Youth club members earn merit points for participating in SPJST lodge, district and state activities. At the end of the youth year, points are totaled and the youth with the highest points in the youth club receive cash awards.

Contest Dates June 1, 2013 to May 31, 2014

Merit Point Contest Age Divisions Junior—Entering Kindergarten to Age 12 Teen—Age 13 to High School Senior

Rules The youth leader or assistant youth leader is responsible for keeping track of the merit points for each active member of the youth club. The points are to be sent to the State Youth Director on the Quarterly and Merit Point Reports each quarter. Youth club members are also encouraged to keep up with their points and turn them in to the youth leader on a quarterly basis. This system helps both the youth leader and the youth member keep better records of youth participation. Current, official Quarterly and Merit Point Reports, available from the State Youth Director may only be used in the Merit Point Contest. The Quarterly and Merit Point Reports sent to the State Youth Director by the youth leader will be kept on file for at least six months following the conclusion of the contest. Merit points are earned for only those activities listed under Youth Point Values. An activity can only earn points in one category on the point sheet. When in doubt about any activity earning points, contact the State Youth Director prior to the contest conclusion. Everyone will be subject to the same rules in every contest. Failure to comply with any rule shall mean immediate withdrawal.

Merit Point Awards First through fifth place awards are presented in the junior and teen divisions of each youth club. The amount of points that top winners receive in both divisions will determine where the point rankings of the first through fifth winning categories begin. First place winners will be those equal to and 20 points below the top place winner in their age division. Second Place will be 21 to 40 points below the top winner in their age division. Third place will be 41 to 60 points below the top winner in their age division. Fourth place will be 61 to 80 points below the top winner in their age division. Fifth place will be 81 to 100 points below the top winner in their age division. Awards are presented on the lodge, district, and state levels in the junior and teen merit point contests. At each District YAD, the Home Office presents first through fifth place awards to qualifying junior and teen youth club members. The junior and teen with the most points in each district also receive recognition. In the event of a tie, all who tied for first place will receive the award.* Junior and Teen Point Awards First Place $30 Second Place - $25 Third Place - $20 Fourth Place - $15 Fifth Place $10

What is an Active Youth Member? A youngster with a current SPJST insurance certificate may enter the youth program the youth year that he/she will be entering kindergarten. To be considered active, youth club member must attend a majority (seven) of the monthly meetings during the year. The youth must attend the majority of these meetings at his/her home youth club. In those instances where a lodge does not have a youth club, the youngster may attend adult lodge meetings or the meetings of another youth club. The youngster will be eligible for camp and Youth Achievement Day (YAD) after the completion of his/her kindergarten year. Active youth members must be single and not be pregnant or a parent. The age of the youth on June 1 of the current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.). The youth year begins June 1 and ends May 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school.

BENEVOLENCE

Vicepresident Wilburn Willis se ujal volební části naší schůze a volby dopadly následovně: president dosavadní Freddie Kaluža, vicepresident dosavadní Wilburn Willis, tajemnice a anglická dopisovatelka Janice Kaluža, finanční tajemnice Mary Lou Mynář, koordinátorka našich akcí Jean Mahler, český dopisovatel Jan Vaculík. Všichni dosavadní úřadníci byli zvolebni jed-

nohlasně a všichni poděkovali za důvěru, kterou jim členstvo projevilo. Budeme se snažit vést náš řád ke všeobecné spokojenosti. Pak jsme schválili nové členy a členky: Jenson Bohannan, Jacoby McCauley, Bryson Bramble, Kameryn Bramble, Canon Dulock, Caison Pustějovský.

června, 12. září, 7. listopadu a vánoční be sídka bude 7. prosince roku 2014. Losování vyhrála Lillian Matúš a Christine Bishop . S bratrským pozdravem Jan Vaculík. —SPJST—

Vystudovala University of Houston v roce 1954, kde dosáhla titulu bakaláø výtvarných umìní, vychovala ètyøi dìti a pøitom i kreslila. Pozdìji pøišlo postgraduální studium dìjin umìní a architektury na University of Houston, pak kreslení v italském Orvietu a v San Miquel de Allende v Mexiku.

—Mgr. Ivana Majíèková, MBA —SPJST—
