Happy Thanksgiving!
What a great surprise it was to finally meet Jim and Jerryline Ho-
lacka at Lodge 66, Waco’s anniversary luncheon on November 2! David and I took a break from float work to travel to Lodge 6, Cottonwood for a fantastic event hosted by Lodge 66.
For the past several years, the most beautifully decorated envelopes have been sent to the Vestnik office by Jim and Jerryline. What a joy it’s been to receive these over the years . . . and what an even greater joy to meet the amazing couple behind the creative envelopes! Thank you, Jim and Jerryline, for sharing your creativity with us.
And, thanks to Lodge 66 for a nice, well-planned social and lunch. It was great to see many members visiting and reconnecting after many
years. Several looked through scrapbooks from yesteryear and enjoyed reminiscing. Thanks, Lodge 66, for a wonderful afternoon, and congratulations on a great event.
Correction Last week’s November 20 Vestnik featured two beautiful young ladies—Audrey Coleman and Emily Mayer-Bain—on the front cover. They are members of Lodge 97, Placedo and were riding the SPJST Float in the Victoria Veterans Day parade. We inadvertently misspelled one of their names. Our apologies.
Thanksgiving Facts The average American will travel 214 miles to visit family and friends for the holiday. Americans eat roughly 535 million pounds of turkey on Thanksgiving Day. The 2013 NFL holiday tripleheader will see the Detroit Lions against the Green Bay Packers, Dallas Cowboys do battle with the Oakland Raiders, and the Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Baltimore Ravens. The world’s largest pumpkin pie was made in New Bremen, Ohio, at the New Bremen Pumpkinfest on September 25, 2010. Weighing in at a hefty 3,699 pounds, the pie measured 20 feet in diameter. Started in 1924 by Macy’s employees, the Macy’s parade featured exotic animals like elephants and lions until 1927. Today, 3.5 million people watch Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, while 50 million viewers tune in on television. During 1942 to 1945, the helium used in parade balloons was needed for the war effort during World War II. The balloon to make the most parade appearances is Snoopy. —SPJST—

Members enjoy Thanksgiving in Czech Republic
Dear Friends, I am having my Thanksgiving dinner today (November 22) with my friends, Effie and Bill Rosene (of SPJST Lodge 232, Mid-Houston) from Houston, Texas, staying in Hlohovice. They have the Czech Cultural Center in Houston. I didn’t have to teach today so all is ready—the turkey, dressing (stuffing), corn, brussels sprouts, poached spiced apples, small finger sandwiches, relish tray, vege soup, and, of course, pumpkin pie. I know that it is all good because I made it! And, next week I teach in Brno so no time. I wish all of you a very Happy Thanksgiving! John Kuba Lodge 133, San Antonio —SPJST—

Lodge 32, Victoria: Hear ye - hear ye! Christmas social Thursday, Dec. 12
That’s right – our annual Christmas social is Thursday, December 12, 2013. Arrive at 6 p.m. for social time. The meal will be served promptly at 6:30 p.m. The lodge will provide ham, coffee, and tea. Each family is asked to bring a side dish and a dessert. What a great way to kick-off the Christmas season! We will be providing a family in need a wonderful basket so they can enjoy Christmas dinner. Please bring non-perishable items to the Christmas social. The lodge will provide them with a ham. Whatever you bring will be put to good use for their Christmas meal and possibly several meals. This is the season to give – and it is truly more blessed to give than receive – especially when we share our blessings with those in need. If anyone has any questions about the family, please contact Linda Mozisek (361) 676-7561. She can answer questions as she and Otto will be delivering the basket. Another thing new this year is to have a cookie exchange. Evelyn Horelka suggested this. It really is fun. I have participated in the exchange and love to take home cookies others have brought! If you want to participate, please bring three dozen cookies (all the same) and bring your recipe so others can copy it if they want. Each person participating will

get some of the other cookies to take home – the number of cookies you take home will depend on how many people are in on this – but everyone is to bring three dozen – and you will go home with three dozen. Fun to sample other cookies without making the entire recipe – if you like what you taste then you can make the recipe yourself! Yum-yum! I jumped the gun here with Christmas coming before Thanksgiving! There’s a reason for this . . . in case you get tired of reading I want to make sure you know about the Christmas social first – you can always go back and read the Thanksgiving part later! Thanksgiving is truly my favorite holiday. It’s all about faith, family, friends, food, and football – I say it every year – it never changes! I love it because it has not become commercialized (probably can’t say that much longer as “Black Friday” is actually beginning at 5 p.m. Thanksgiving Day!) – no presents – no pressure – just getting together – sharing time with family and friends. We are so blessed to have freedom of religion, to have a family and friends to share what we have - in our home! It doesn’t matter how large or small our home is – it’s who we have in our home that matters. Thanksgiving brings me much happiness! I leave you with this . . . “Gratitude, appreciation, giving thanks. No matter what words you use, they all mean the same thing: Happy!” So when you say ‘Happy Thanksgiving,’ it’s all about the gratitude, appreciation, and thankfulness our hearts are filled with for all the blessings we have received. “Count your many blessings, count them one by one” – you will truly be amazed at how much we take for granted – Give Thanks From the Bottom of Your Heart! Fort Worth Friendship Club
The meeting of the Friendship Club was called to order on Wednesday, November 6, 2013, at St. Thomas Dining Room by President Betty Krenek. Our guests were Jeanette Lee, daughter of Lorraine Cross, and Sarka Ondraekova of Czech Republic who was guest of Anna Marie Moncrief. It was so nice to have you, ladies. Everyone was welcomed. The Pledge of Allegiance was said by all, and Vice President Alene Kercho read a beautiful piece titled “The Lord’s Prayer by a 15-Year-Old.” It was especially enjoyed by all. Alene always comes up with some good poems or prayers. Secretary Elizabeth Creamer was late in arriving so the vice president read the minutes from the last meeting, and Treasurer Jo Ann Wilcox gave the financial report. Both were approved as presented. President Betty thanked hostesses Paula Arsenault and Debbie Skrasek along with their helpers as they did a great job. Also, decorators Rose Ann Spann and Lola Taylor were thanked as the Thanksgiving theme was carried out throughout the room. Thanks, ladies! Your turkeys and pumpkin arrangements looked great. Sunshine Person Paula Hall reported on sending a sympathy card and notification of masses to the family of Elizabeth Joyce who passed away last month. May her soul rest in peace. President Betty asked for any news on Lucille Kret, Linda Horner, and Monalee Hattendorf, and there was none. Libbie Vrla reported on seeing Elsie Anders who looks good and is doing great. I asked her if she would be attending the next Friend-

ship Club meeting, and she said that she does not drive that far yet. I asked if she could get to my house which is not that far from Crowley, and she could go with me. Elsie did call that a family member was having a birthday, and she was unable to go. Camille Bolcer called me, and she, too, was unable to go. Monalee, Elsie, and Camille, you were all missed. And, of course, we always miss and think of Lucille and Linda often. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to all November celebrants Pat Cabrera, Elizabeth Creamer, Ella Greer, Tracy Horn, Jacqueline Phillips, Ekebuta Walker, and Mary Agnes Ward. May you all have many more. Under new business, it was voted to give the priest at St. Thomas a monetary gift at Christmas. Our menu for lunch will be ham (purchased by the Club). So ladies, bring your side dish to complement ham. Paula Hall, chairperson of the nominating committee, reported her committee of Lupe Esparza and Margaret Sears, nominate Sharron Connelly as president, Rose Ann Spann as vice president, and Jo Ann Wilcox as treasurer. Paula further asked for volunteers to serve as secretary, and there were none. Therefore, it was suggested the vice president assume the secretarial duties. Following the motion by Paula which was seconded, these were unanimously elected to serve for the ensuing year. They will assume their duties in January. Congratulations, ladies! We know you will do a great job. Door prizes were donated by Paula Arsenault (two), Tracy Horn, Helen Skrasek, and Libbie Vrla, and Rose Ann said all the pumpkin centerpieces were to be used as door prizes. Winners of the 50/50 dollar games were
Marilyn Llewellyn and Helen Skrasek. We had lots of happy winners. At this time, President Betty turned the microphone over to Eartha Pitre, a crime prevention specialist from the Fort Worth Police Department who spoke on: always be aware of your surroundings, don’t disclose personal information to unknown sources, be careful about opening your wallet, don’t leave your purse unattended, be aware of distractions, have car keys ready to unlock your car, don’t leave valuable items in plain view, plan ahead – play the What If Game if something happens. She was such an interesting, funny speaker, and she gave examples. She also touched on at-home safety and common scams by mobile criminals. These are all things we need to be reminded of often. Eartha was thanked for her presentation and stayed to have lunch with us which she thoroughly enjoyed. I told her we have some of the best cooks in Fort Worth, and she agreed with me. She especially enjoyed Ella Greer’s German chocolate cake which she took with her as she had eaten so many other items—she couldn’t eat it all. President Betty announced hostesses for December will be Lupe Esparza, Mary Jean Loy, and Darlene Tompkins. Following the blessing, we had an outstanding lunch. Betty and Stanley Krenek’s turkey was wonderful, Jo Ann Wilcox’s and Alene Kercho’s dressing was great. I don’t know who made the big pot of gravy, but it was good, too. Thanks, ladies and Stanley, you’ll did good! And, to all you other ladies, everything was so good and outstanding. Thanks to all of you. Games were then played, and Rose Ann had a couple of fruit baskets which were given away as game

me anyway. There is just so much to see that I didn’t get to listen, read, or view everything. On Saturday, my nephew and wife, J.D. and Pam Kosarek of Waco, called and wanted to know if I wanted to go. They picked me up, then picked up sister Lil in Arlington, and their daughter Melanie, who lives in McKinney, met us. We took our time, viewed all the monitors, read most of the items, enjoyed seeing all the gifts received from other countries, and enjoyed all the exhibits. It is a beautiful museum, and it is close by (provided you can handle the traffic to Dallas), but it is a worthwhile trip. Then, we enjoyed an evening meal at the Cheesecake Factory at North Park. Expression of Sympathy
We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 17, Novy Tabor, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed brother, BILLY MOOREHEAD. Funeral service for Billy Wayne Morehead, age 60, of Caldwell was held at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 27, 2013, at Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Caldwell with Reverend David Johnson and Reverend Skip Stutts officiating. Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Billy Moorehead Thursday, September 26 at the funeral home. Burial was at New Tabor Cemetery. Mr. Moorehead died Tuesday, September 24 at Brazos Valley Hospice Inpatient Facility in Bryan surrounded by his family following a six-year battle with cancer. He was born May 12, 1953, in Hearne to Billy Ray and Peggy (Clark) Morehead. He graduated from Hearne High School in 1971 and began his work career with Southern Pacific Railroad. When the economy took a downturn and he was no longer able to hold a position with the railroad, he worked as a carpenter’s helper, painter, and finally as a truck driver to support his family. Family was always a priority to Billy. Billy also had a deep passion for golf. He couldn’t wait for the weekends so that he could gather with his friends and play a round of golf hoping to win a bit of money if he played good. His love for the game was passed down to his daughter Vicki, and they shared several memories over many years on the course. Billy also enjoyed grilling and smoking food on the barbecue pit as well as working on the tractor. He also had a deep interest in firearms that he shared with his son Vince. They had several conversations over which one was the best, could hold the most ammunition, and most importantly, if Vince had used this firearm while serving as a Marine. On June 22, 1974, Billy married Adelle Urbanovsky and they were blessed with two children Vince and

Vicki and three grandchildren Melanie, Delayni, and Liam. Billy loved his wife and children, but his grandchildren were the joy of his life. He loved to pick up Melanie, his oldest granddaughter, at school on Friday, stop for a snack, and then head to Caldwell for a weekend at Paw Paw’s and Maw Maw’s. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor. Billy was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law and mother-inlaw Kverin and Agnes Urbanovsky; and brother-in-law Jerry Urbanovsky. He is survived by his wife of 39 years Adelle (Urbanovsky) Morehead of Caldwell; son Vince Morehead and wife Stephanie; daughter Vicki McCallister and husband Jake; grandchildren Melanie, Delayni, and Liam Morehead; brother Dennis Morehead; sister-in-law Georgie Nors and husband Bob; brother-in-law Kverin R, Urbanovsky and wife Shirle; brotherin-law Robert Urbanovsky and Nina Little; sister-in-law Agnes Lamere and husband Rufus; special aunt Lucille Smith; numerous aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins, many friends; and his grand-dogs Bud and Hummer. District Two Youth set 2013, 2014 important dates
Dear Youth Leaders, Can you believe Thanksgiving is here. How exciting! Then it will soon be Christmas. Wow! I am so proud of the many youth clubs who are gearing up and helping the needy during this time. Many of you are helping a particular family/families, donating to a food pantry, giving to Santa Pals or organizations that collect food and feed those that otherwise might not have a warm meal. Thank you! Thank you! This is what the holiday season is all about—getting our youth involved to see that there are so many people and children a lot less fortunate than each of us. I hope all District Two youth leaders received my letter and permission slip regarding the lock-in scheduled for Friday, December 13 in Taylor. I hope you will encourage all your members to attend. A lot of fun things are planned. If you can get a head count at your next meeting, it would really help on how many snacks we will need. Of course, if someone says they cannot come and later see that they can attend, please have them still come. Encourage everyone to participate and bring their socks and pajamas. Everyone can bring a friend. As you are putting out your Christmas decorations in the very near future, please keep in mind that the SPJST camp theme is “Christmas in July.” We are in need of decorations that you no longer want. We are especially in need of a Christmas tree, wreaths for each cabin, lights, Christmas ornaments, ribbon, Christmas cookie cutters, and any and everything that has to do with Christmas will be appreciated. I ask that all youth get their decorations to you, and we will go through it before Christmas. What we need and do not

It could include an elf, snowman, reindeer, or a present. Use your imagination. Please do not dress as Santa or Mrs. Claus. My plans are to visit with Santa prior to Christmas and ask an enormous favor that he and Mrs. Claus join us in July—hoping they will be able to handle the 100degree weather. I am so excited to be planning camp so early, and it’s not

Please let me know if you, as an adult, are willing to walk the parade route. I do need a list of names to turn in to Melanie by November 27. Mrs. Mathers shared what life was like in the Czech Republic, pictures of dynamic architecture, favorite foods, and we had a lengthy discussion about the Czech baby “naming” days calender. Babies are very often named based on this calender. Based on my birthday, I would have been named Zdeneka. Mrs. Mathers also recalled things about the United States that surprised her family like that everyone has a car, and we don’t use public transportation anymore, that we live so spread out, and that we don’t eat fish at Christmas. Mrs. Mathers provided a very interesting and entertaining talk on her Czech heritage. —Emily Lewis, President

District Two plans Friday, Dec. 13-14 lock-in
Dear Vestnik Readers, District Two Members and Guest, we hope you will make plans to attend the District Two Lock-In on Friday, December 13, 2013, at Lodge 29, Taylor, located at 5025 FM 616. I realize it is Friday the 13th, but have no fear, we have plans for a fun-filled night for each of you. The lock-in will begin at 8 p.m., and youth will need to picked up by 8 a.m. on Saturday. The Taylor 4 H will be selling hamburgers on Friday evening. Parents, come on out, purchase your family hamburgers, and enjoy a meal together. Send the youth upstairs at 8 p.m. for all the fun. All youth and adults spending the night will have pizza, snacks, and drinks later that night. A light breakfast will be served the next morning after we all get the hall back in order. I just realized, breakfast may be served before some of us go to sleep? I think that has happened before. So much is planned, and I am so excited for the lock-in. It has been several years since we had one so plans are to make it the best yet. The stage will be set up for a glowin-the-dark/black light activity. Be sure and wear white or neon colors to get the most effect. Between 11 p.m. and midnight, everyone will be asked to change into their pajamas and socks for the pajama/crazy sock party. Of course, have your mom check out your décor beforehand to be sure it is appropriate. Prizes will be given to best dressed boy and girl. Lots of Games: Bunco, Bingo, Minute To Win It and More Some are just for fun, and some will be competitive.

Lodge 202, Jourdanton Youth Gives a Helping Hand
Our church has helped build a Habitat for Humanity home in San Antonio each year for some time. Habitat requires you to be 14 years old to work on the jobsite, so this was the first year I was able to help. My mother, brother Sam, and I arrived at 8 a.m. on one of the last work days – landscaping day! It was drizzling that morning so the clay stuck to your shoes and made it hard to walk. I called out to my mom, “Hey, look at me. I’ve grown a couple of inches!” We began by removing rocks from the yard filling at least 10 wheelbarrows.
Then, we added a little top soil and raked the yard level. The group worked hard to plant three trees, shrubs and sod the yard. We spread mulch and watered everything to help the yard get a good start. It was hard work, but we were almost finished just before noon. It is amazing what a group of people can accomplish. I hope I get to help next year, too. Fraternally, Amanda Hoggard —SPJST—

Texas Czech Genealogical Society Hosts Successful Bag-A-Jeep Fundraiser
November 9, 2013, was the date for the Bag-A-Jeep event, sponsored by the Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS). The Burleson County Expo Center in Caldwell was jumping, beginning at 5 p.m. when attendees were treated to a delicious meal of brisket, sausage, and all the trimmings, complete with banana pudding! The live auction with auctioneer
Harvey Johnson got underway immediately after dinner. A number of successful bidders were excited with their prizes of a Yeti cooler, a flat screen television, a large Christmas quilt, a Czech garnet pendant, a huge Christmas wreath, and other items. A silent auction was also held during the evening, and a number of great, fun prizes were won by many individuals.
Door prize winners were excited to win a $150 gift card from Lowes; $50 gift card from Home Depot; a casino trip to Marksville; and a $100 Visa gift card. The Red Ravens Band energized many people who enjoyed dancing to their special type of music. It was obvious that this band is a favorite of many who came out for the evening. TCGS wishes to thank everyone
who donated items for the auctions and to everyone who came out to support this event. Special thanks to Joe and Donna Rychlik, who were co-chairmen for the event, and also to their Edwin committee consisting of Hlavaty, Geraldine Lindeman, Nancy Pieper, Merlene Bravenec, Darwin Machu, and Nancy Machu. —SPJST—

This group in the evening of December 5 visit families with little children. Devils announce Nicolas’ coming with a bell ringing and a spencering. After coming to a flat, the Nicolas asks every child if he or she was good all year and ask it for saying of a prayer, a poem, or for a song singing. Then Nicolas with the Angel distributes to good children a detail tucks as e.g. cake and chocolate figures, oranges, tangerines, bananas, dates, and apples. The devil clatters with the chain, the devil is crying and to “bad” children gives only a a bit of a coal or a raw potato. Each Nicolas with his suite after distribution of Nicolas’ present in his district demasks, turn their costumes back to lending office, and comes back to his family. Fraternally, Ivo. •••••
Mikuláše vzniklo jméno i mýtická postava Santa Claus.

Potom Mikuláš s Andělem rozdávají hodným dětem drobné pamlsky jako např. perníkové a čokoládové figurky, pomeranče, mandarinky, datle, banány a jablka. Čert řinčí řetězem, křičí a „zlobivým“ dětem dává pouze kousek uhlí nebo syrovou bramboru.
