ore than 60 years ago, SPJST’s leaders realized that to keep the lodges growing they would have to keep the young people interested. Youth clubs were organized in lodges throughout the state . . . and what a blessing that was then—and still is today—for the entire organization. The SPJST Youth Program builds leaders. I have witnessed time and time again a young person who is shy and afraid to get in front of an audience go through the program developing self confidence, character, and leadership skills. This same youth grows into a young adult who is ready to conquer the world, speak in front of a group, and work with people. Ask past youth club members who have actively participated in the SPJST Youth Program. I’m confident they will tell you how it has helped grow them into who they are today. What a joy it has been putting this 56-page SPJST Youth Program Salute together; however, it barely scratches the surface of what a difference the program has made to the organization and to the members and leaders who have participated in it. The pages outline various aspects of the program. The information in this special Vestnik issue dedicated to the
history of the SPJST Youth Program was found in past Vestniks and in SPJST archival material. If you have an update to any of the information presented, give me a call so we can correct the data. Please see page 50 for a special invitation to preserve your youth club’s treasured past, and see the back page to share your SPJST memories. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you, SPJST members, for your support and commitment to the Youth Program. Thanks, past and present youth club members, for your participation. And a very special appreciation goes to past and present youth leaders. It’s these adult leaders’ dedication and hard work that has carried and inspired the program for the past 60 years. That same dedication and hard work . . . combined with continuous growth and participation . . . will carry the program to everlasting success. Thanks for the memories, and best wishes always. Recognizing 60 Years of SPJST’s Youth Program
SPJST Youth Clubs . . . Join and Get Involved Today!
SPJST is a fraternal organization
founded on the time-honored idea of doing good for each other and for the communities that we seek to serve. Our youth mission is to provide a well-rounded educational, patriotic, and social program. We also like to have fun! Through active participation in local SPJST Youth Clubs and statewide events, SPJST youth develop a greater awareness of the common bonds that we all share. SPJST youth clubs also work with community-based organizations to tailor programs to fit local needs. Youth activities include summer camps and community service projects, talent contests, and other local and statewide contests. SPJST also has a great scholarship program that has helped to enable hundreds of SPJST youth to continue their higher education. SPJST strives to instill a healthy lifestyle for children and families with programs like SPJST summer camp. Summer camp provides our members with the chance to have fun in the great outdoors and foster friendships that will last a lifetime. Helping children develop a love of the outdoors and being physically active is a big part of SPJST’s camp program. Young people are influenced by their friends, family, media, and other information that they receive. Our District Youth Counselors and volunteer youth leaders work hard to build and maintain a fun and stimulating youth program that instills positive values in SPJST youth. By becoming involved in the youth program as an adult volunteer, you can make a positive difference in your community and in the lives of our young people. You and your family can be a part of these programs by becoming active members of SPJST. SPJST membership is available through the purchase of a life insurance certificate from SPJST. If you are not currently a member of SPJST and would like information about SPJST life insurance and the many benefits that SPJST has to offer, please see pages 54 and 55 and contact the District Youth Counselor or youth leader in your area. You may also contact the SPJST Home Office at (800) 727-7578 and ask to speak with someone in the Youth Department. Membership in SPJST provides many opportunities for active youth club members. Even in communities
that do not have an active youth club, there are ways that you can participate in our fun, service-oriented program. Those qualifications are outlined in the following summary.
What’s an Active Youth Member? In SPJST, an active youth club member is a youth with an SPJST insurance certificate that is current and who attends seven out of 12 monthly youth club meetings during the youth year. Youth may attend the adult lodge meetings or another lodge’s youth club meeting if either their youth club is not meeting or they need to make up meetings. Active youth members must be single and not pregnant or a parent. The age of the youth on June 1
of the current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.). A youth with a current certificate may enter the SPJST youth program the youth year that they will be entering kindergarten. The youth will be eligible for camp and youth achievement day after the completion of their kindergarten year. The youth year begins June 1 and goes through May 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school.
SPJST Youth Achievement Day and Participation Guidelines Youth Achievement Day (YAD) consists of the following contests and exhibitions.
SPJST Youth Club Motto
Until the year 2001, SPJST’s Youth Club Motto was, “In support of the motto of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas, I extend (right hand) a helping hand in Benevolence, a friendly hand to Humanity, a fraternal hand to all my Brotherhood. By clasping the hand of my brother, I pledge Benevolence, Humanity and Brotherhood.” The SPJST Youth Program conducted a motto contest at the end of the year 2000 and the beginning of 2001. Youth club members were asked to write a motto for the youth program. The grand prize winner of the contest was 12-year-old Traci Dobecka of Lodge 6, Cottonwood in District Three. She received a $500 United States Savings Bond for her efforts. The youth club motto is recited at all youth club meetings and SPJST Youth Program activities.
I pledge my support to uphold the high ideals of the SPJST: S eeking brotherhood; P ledging benevolence; J oining hands; S upporting humanity; T rusting in my ability to make this world a better place. This I pledge.

Each district sponsors a Youth Achievement Day in which local lodge youth club members compete for district honors. First place district winners go on to compete at State Youth Achievement Day to be held on the first Saturday in August at the Mayborn Convention Center in Temple.
Who Can Enter? Active youth club members, who have completed their kindergarten year to high school senior, who attended seven out of 12 youth club meetings during the youth year and who perform constructive activities in the lodge, are eligible for the YAD contests. New youth club members joining after June 1 must have attended a majority of meetings since the join date. Certificates must be issued by January 1 in order to participate in YAD for that year. Youth in lodges where there are no youth clubs can enter YAD if they attend seven out of 12 adult meetings or participate in the call-in meetings with the State Youth Director. Youth leaders will verify eligibility of each contestant selected to complete in District YAD. How Do You Enter? A YAD contestant must pre-register for all contests by completing a separate YAD entry card for each contest to be entered. YAD entry cards are available from the youth leader, DYC, or State Youth Director.
SPJST Summer Camp and Participation Guidelines SPJST provides summer camping for its youth members. Youth camp funds come from an annual allocation by the SPJST Supreme Lodge. Each of the seven SPJST districts across the state hosts its own camp. Some districts may have combined camp sessions.
Who Can Participate? Camp is provided on the basis of participation in SPJST activities. Pending that the qualifications are met, summer camp is available to all SPJST

certificate-holding youth members. Campers must also be in good standing with SPJST. The ages for camp are completed kindergarten to high school senior as of June 1 of the camping year. Graduating high school seniors who are active youth club members may attend camp as a Senior Leader-inTraining (LIT) during the camp session that follows their high school graduation.
Camp Eligibility Qualifications for youth to attend SPJST camp are based on the previous youth year (June 1 to May 31). To be eligible to attend camp at no charge, youth members must attend seven out of 12 youth meetings or seven out of 12 adult lodge meetings, if the lodge does not have a youth club. Youth members must also attend a majority of the youth activities in the youth club or lodge. Any youth (previous member or new certificate) who initially joins the youth club by January 1 and attends seven meetings may go to camp free of charge. SPJST youth members who do not meet the above qualifications may attend camp for a prorated fee determined by the DYC. These funds will be submitted to the State Youth Director. Life insurance certificate must be written by May 1 of the current youth year in order for youth to attend camp. This rule also applies to those campers who will be paying to attend camp. Each camper must submit a completed SPJST Camp Application to the State Youth Department no later than May 31. These applications are available on SPJST’s Website. All incomplete camp applications will be returned to the youth. No one may attend SPJST Camp without a completed SPJST Eligibility Application on file for the current year. SPJST Scholarship Program and Qualifications SPJST recognizes and awards its members for academic excellence, exceptional leadership ability, and outstanding service with its scholarship and leadership grant program. In 2013, the SPJST Home Office awarded fiftyseven $1,000 scholarships to deserving SPJST youth. Another nine scholarships were presented at State Youth Achievement Day in August. SPJST awards the following scholarships and leadership grants: General Scholarships in the amount of $1,000
Leadership Grants in the amount of $1,000
State Merit Grant in the amount of $1,500
District Merit Grants in the amount of $1,000
Royalty Grants in the amount of $1,500
Any youth member who has been the recipient of either the State Merit Grant, the District Merit Grant, or the Royalty Grant is also eligible to apply for a General Scholarship or a Leadership Grant. A youth may receive a maximum of two scholarships/grants within SPJST, excluding the State Merit Grant. General scholarships are funded by the Supreme Lodge and voluntary contributions by SPJST members. Accordingly, the more funds available, the more scholarships awarded. Leadership grants were established in 1996 for active youth club members. Leadership grants are funded solely through allocations by the Supreme Lodge. To be eligible, applicants must:
• Have an active SPJST life insurance certificate in force for one year.
• Hold an active SPJST life insurance certificate for the duration of the scholarship or grant; and • Be a high school graduate or equivalent.
General scholarship recipients may only receive one general scholarship. Active youth club members are required to apply for both the general scholarship and the leadership grant; however, they are only eligible to receive one. You may request scholarship application guidelines through the Office of the President during the fall of the year. All required application materials must be returned to the SPJST Fraternal Department by February 1. Please note that this information is subject to change. All applicants are encouraged to please refer to the Office of the President for the most complete and up-to-date information regarding the SPJST Scholarship application process. SPJST Youth Program Through the Years
The Early Years
According to A History of the SPJST compiled by late Supreme Lodge President Nick A. Morris, the SPJST Youth Program began as early as 1937 when a youth group on the lodge level was formed at Lodge 25, Ennis. The second such youth group was formed at Lodge 88, Houston in 1948. The third youth group was formed at Lodge 4, Hallettsville in 1953. The fourth and fifth youth groups were organized at Lodge 66, Waco and Lodge 84, Dallas. Both were formed in 1954. A driving force behind SPJST’s Youth Movement in the early 1950s was Birdie Hilsher Pech. In a Vestnik column that Sister Pech wrote in 1953, she says, “If you think that the grass is just a little greener on the other side of the fence, better think twice. Our SPJST has all of the green grass. It is up to us to keep it watered now and keep it growing bigger and better all the time. Keep our youth and keep them entertained for a greater future of our SPJST, for without them, we would perish as grass would die without water.” Sixty years later, these words still ring true. The purpose of the SPJST Youth Department continues to be twofold: first, to build character among the younger members and secondly, to involve our young people in activities that will prepare them for leadership positions at all levels of our Society and in their adult lives.
A Three-Part Program
On an annual basis, SPJST Youth Clubs sponsor a wide range of social activities, community service projects, and charity projects. The SPJST youth club is about having fun, but it’s also about contributing to the welfare of the people of Texas. The SPJST Youth Program has three parts: educational, patriotic, and social. The educational part of the SPJST Youth Program is an ongoing part of local youth club activities. State and local programs address a range of areas, including human relations, nature, parliamentary procedure, juvenile decency, arts and crafts, the fine arts, music, dramatics, and ethnic tradition. Youth club members range from kindergarten to high school senior. The patriotic program consists of ceremonial rituals and an annual essay contest. The objective is to teach the operation of a free democratic society and majority rule. The social program includes socials, dances, picnics, pageants, hayrides, and family group activities geared to foster family unity. In addition, SPJST makes summer camping available to its active young members. Each of the seven SPJST districts across the state has its own camp time at SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm in Ledbetter, Texas. Some districts have combined camp sessions. Generally stated, SPJST camp is provided on the basis of participation in SPJST activities. To qualify for camp, active youth club members must attend seven out of 12 youth meetings
1953 - 2013
in the months preceding camp. Any youth (previous member or new certificate) who initially joins the youth club must attend the majority of meetings to be eligible for camp. Another way to qualify for camp is to attend seven out of 12 adult meetings in lodges where there are no youth clubs. Non-active youth members may attend camp for a fee that is determined by their district’s District Youth Counselor. Youth camp funds come from an allocation by the SPJST Supreme Lodge. A number of professional assistants are hired for instruction in archery, aquatics, and as camp nurses. Much of the chaperoning and programming is done by parents and SPJST trained leaders. Adult leaders are trained at an annual workshop held in March or April. District Youth Counselors and trained specialists instruct youth leaders in various aspects of the SPJST youth program, including camping, first aid and team-building. A second workshop, the leaders-intraining workshop, for high school youth club members is held in early June. In addition to its summer camp program, SPJST offers its young people a program which encourages them to participate in a range of individual and group skills and talent competitions. The program culminates with the State Youth Achievement Day and Royalty Contest, held on a statewide basis on the first or second Saturday in August. More than 300 young people from across the state participate in the event which represents the grand finale of the summer long district contests. The competition covers talent, speech and crafts. It is cooperative efforts such as these that truly symbolize the great potential of SPJST — young and old — working together to achieve common goals and enjoying life together.
Texans have long been familiar with the initials SPJST. Less familiar is the Czech name they represent— Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas. English translation: Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas. By any name, SPJST is an organization with a proud past and a bright future.

Paradise on Earth
To better understand SPJST and why it was established, it is important to know a little about the group’s founders and their homeland — the Czech lands of Moravia, Slovakia and Bohemia. Combined, this region represents a section of central Europe, rich in natural resources and often referred to in song and poetry as “Zemsky Raj to na Pohled” or “Paradise on Earth.” Because it was so well-endowed by natural resources, the Czech lands were among the most progressive and highly developed in Central Europe. With the establishment of the first university, Charles University, in Prague in 1348, the region also became a center of higher education. For these and other reasons, the Czech lands became an attractive prize and the target of recurring assaults by its neighbors. These attacks culminated with the Battle of White Mountain in 1620 when the Czech people were thoroughly defeated. The nation ceased to exist, and all its people were either killed or sent into exile and its wealth went to its conquerors.
Coming to America
The exiled Czechs emigrated into Germany, Russia, England, and the United States. The first arrived in North America after the Battle of White Mountain, settling in New Amsterdam,
which is now known as New York. Many others soon followed. They brought with them the spirit of liberty that had been crushed at White Mountain. They took great pride in this country which gave them the privilege to determine their own destiny and to bind together to achieve even greater accomplishments. Between 1834 and 1900, approximately 200,000 people of Czech descent immigrated from their native land to America. Many of those ended up in Texas. To make life more enjoyable, the Czech immigrants and their families stuck together.
Strength in Numbers
In the 1880s, Czech pioneers in Texas elected to join others across the United States in a fraternal benefit union called the CSPS, now known as the Czechoslovak Society of America (CSA). The first Texas lodge was organized April 13, 1894. At that time, the CSPS was undergoing a period of internal strife, mainly centering around disagreement over money matters. Generally stated, Texans believed that CSPS ties lay overwhelmingly in favor of eastern industrial workers, rather than in favor of the farming families of the west. Certain financial demands were not met by the CSPS, and western and Texas delegates grew disenchanted with the organization of the society. Giving up their efforts at fiscal reform, Texas Czechs shortly after 1896 decided on secession from the CSPS. And on December 28 of that year, Texas delegates gathered at La Grange and set about the task of forming a new society. After some discussion, a threemember committee was elected to draw up a set of by-laws for the new organization. The committee elected
consisted of J.R. Kubena, A. Haidusek, and F. Cihal. Haidusek later gave up the job, and L.V. Vanek was named to this committee. In March of 1897, the constitution was submitted to the Texas CSPS lodges for consideration. Seven of the 25 Texas lodges approved the constitution and withdrew from the older society. These seven lodges represented the vanguard of the fledgling SPJST organization. Official records indicate that the first convention was held in La Grange on June 20, 1897, and the society started operations on July 1, 1897, with 782 members and 25 lodges. SPJST received its state charter on August 12, 1897.
The Road to Temple
SPJST’s first base of operations was located in Fayetteville, Texas. The reason being that the central figure in administering the affairs of the Society, Secretary J.R. Kubena, had his personal business operations located in that city. Until his death in 1938, Kubena administered the affairs of SPJST out of a single room in his general merchandise store. It wasn’t until the early 1930s that the other officers were made full-time, and additional office space was needed. That is when the Supreme Lodge officers rented the building housing the former Fayetteville State Bank a door or two down in October 1932 for the rental fee of $30 per month. The building served two, then three, Supreme Lodge officers until the early 1940s when the records and offices were moved to a larger building on the square in Fayetteville until the offices were moved to Temple following the 1952 Convention in Houston. The move from Fayetteville to Temple was made during the months of Au-

gust and September of 1953. A decision had previously been reached to completely renovate and remodel the third floor of the Professional Building on Second Street and Central Avenue to house the officers of the Supreme Lodge. As the years passed, it became increasingly evident that adequate and suitable quarters would have to be sought elsewhere, and the solutions seemed to lie in the construction of a new building. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held on October 25, 1969, with formal dedication of the new SPJST Home Office building on the corner of Main Street and French Avenue taking place on Sunday, January 31, 1971.
Society With a Purpose
From the outset, SPJST lodge meetings made members feel at home and provided them with the economic security of fraternal life insurance. But, there was much more to SPJST than that . . . Through participation in lodge meetings and SPJST conventions, members learned and applied the democratic processes of their newly adopted homeland. They grew to appreciate the value of free speech and to express their opinions. Moreover, they learned how to conduct meetings and the importance of voting. Having learned and adopted these American values, SPJST members became better citizens. SPJST served its purpose well. Over the course of the next two generations, American society and lifestyles changed dramatically. Our state and our nation was becoming progressively more industrialized. At the same time,
the country was becoming more urban and less rural. Many people—including the sons and daughters of the early members—moved away from the farms and into the towns and cities. In many cases, they took SPJST with them. Thus, it was during this time that many of our urban lodges were established. It was also during this time, in 1953, that SPJST headquarters moved its state headquarters to Temple. Once again, SPJST had an important mission to fulfill—to provide its members with identity and support at a time when life in America was becoming increasingly impersonal and unstable. The society served its purpose well. The legacy of these days—the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes, youth program, and various cultural enrichment programs including the Czech Heritage Museum and SPJST Education and Nature Center—are with us today.
Looking Ahead
Achieving success in the future remains an exciting prospect. Just as SPJST’s forefathers learned to adjust, SPJST is responding to meet the needs of its members in these changing times. From a financial perspective, SPJST offers its members a full line of life insurance programs, annuities, and related member benefits, including home, business, and farm and ranch loans. One of the most significant fraternal developments in SPJST over the past decade has been the increase in volunteerism and human service projects. In lodges all over the state, members are committing their time and energy in support of worthwhile causes, helping people in need by working in hospitals, senior citizen homes, and raising money for many causes, including scholarships, food banks, volunteer fire departments, drug abuse programs, and various charities. They are taking the best that SPJST has to offer—a tradition of helping people to care for their families—and are extending it to their communities. In light of all these things, there is indeed great promise for the future of fraternalism and SPJST. • Mission
and Goals •
The mission of the SPJST Youth Program is to provide a well-rounded educational, patriotic, and social program. In support of this mission, the SPJST Youth Program will continue to fulfill the following goals.
1953 - 2013
I. Educational A. To educate youth about SPJST, its history, Czech heritage, purpose, benefits, and future. B. To cultivate a loyalty to SPJST as an organization and a desire to support it and ensure its continued progress and existence. C. To develop character traits in youth which will make them better citizens in their communities, their state, and their nation. D. To guide and lead youth to grow in personal development by giving them opportunities to express their opinions, thoughts, and feelings. E. To provide opportunities for youth to demonstrate creativeness, talent, and knowledge. F. To develop the skills and talents that benefit SPJST’s youth throughout life. G. To foster strong leadership and volunteerism in SPJST’s youth and adults. II. Patriotic A. To provide an opportunity for youth to learn about and to practice the democratic process. B. To develop patriotic projects and programs. III. Social A. To work with families and other community agencies to provide meaningful leisure time activities for youth.
Achieving the mission will result in capable, competent, and caring SPJST members.
• Definitions • Active Youth Member A youngster with a current SPJST insurance certificate may enter the youth program the youth year that
he/she will be entering kindergarten. To be considered active, youth club member must attend a majority (seven) of the monthly meetings during the year. The youth must attend the majority of these meetings at his/her home youth club. In those instances where a lodge does not have a youth club, the youngster may attend adult lodge meetings or the meetings of another youth club. The youngster will be eligible for camp and Youth Achievement Day (YAD) after the completion of his/her kindergarten year. Active youth members must be single and not be pregnant or a parent. The age of the youth on June 1 of the current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.).
The youth year begins June 1 and ends May 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school.
All exceptions will be approved by the Supreme Lodge President and State Youth Director. District SPJST is divided into seven geographic regions across Texas.
District Youth Counselor (DYC) Oversees all district youth activities (camp, youth achievement day, district social, etc.). Each of the seven districts elects a DYC and an assistant(s) in the spring district meeting every year. Head of the Youth Program SPJST Supreme Lodge President.

Leader-In-Training (LIT) A Leader-In-Training (LIT) is an active high school- aged youth who is deemed responsible by his/her youth leader and DYC. The youth club member may attend the LIT workshop, held in June, after completing a Leader-InTraining application and an SPJST camp application and with recommendation from his/her youth leader and District Youth Counselor. LITs with a certificate from the State Youth Director should attend and assist with their district’s summer camping session.* LITs also assist their youth leaders in their youth clubs throughout the year. Local Lodge Refers to the SPJST lodge of which the youth club is a part. There cannot be a youth club without a local lodge. Youth and adult members belong to a local lodge by being SPJST life insurance certificate holders.
Meetings The youth club meets only once per month for its business meetings irrespective of the frequency of lodge meetings.
Merit Point Contests Youth club members earn points for participating in lodge, district, and state activities. The youth leader or assistant youth leader is responsible for recording the merit points of each active youth club member. These points are to be posted on the Quarterly and Merit Point Report and sent to the State Youth Director each quarter. At District YAD, first through fifth place awards will be presented to all qualifying youth in the junior and teen divisions who have earned a minimum of 60 points. Youth club members are also encouraged to keep up with their point totals and provide them to their youth leaders on a quarterly basis.
Quarterly Report To be completed by the youth leader and/or assistant youth leader and sent to the State Youth Director. This report includes the sign-in list and merit point totals. A disbursement of $2 per member per meeting is mailed each quarter to each youth club provided that there is an average of at least five youngsters attending each meeting during the quarter. The quarterly reports are due as follows.

• Organizing a Youth Club •
To organize a new youth club or reactivate an inactive club:
1. Request permission from the local lodge.
2. Secure at least one youth leader who is a member of the lodge and who is willing to organize the youth club. The lodge must secure at least five youth
• Youth Club Policy • Extensions of Adult Lodge Youth clubs at local lodges are extensions of the adult or “parent” lodge, not separate entities. They exist by virtue and because of the local lodge. If there were no local lodge, then there would be no youth club.
Youth Club Reports It is very essential that a report be presented about youth club activities in the adult lodge meeting every month. This report should include the financial status (treasury) of the youth club. While we generally subscribe to the policy that what monies or funds are raised by the youth club belong to the youth club, it makes for a better relationship if the lodge knows what the youth club is doing, how the money is being spent, and what the status of the funds are. That way, if the youth club ever runs short of funds, the adult lodge will be more inclined to perhaps grant funds to the youth club. However, if the adult lodge never receives a report on any of the youth activities and the youth club operates as a separate and exclusive unit, the adult lodge is not apt to look favorably upon any request that the youth club may have. Furthermore, the funds of the youth club are subject to audit just as the funds of the lodge are. In other words, there has to be some control and accountability on the youth club and its activities.
Youth Club Eligibility Youth clubs must maintain five members in order to receive any monetary allocations or incentive awards. Youth may attend the adult lodge meetings or another lodge’s youth club meeting if either their youth club is not meeting or they need to make up meetings. H H H H H SPJST H H H H H

District Two Camp July 14 - 17 Camp Val Verde
You’re invited to come on back to Camp Val Verde!
Dear Youth Members, Camp is almost here! District Two Camp, to be held at Camp Val Verde near McGregor, begins Thursday, July 14, 2005, at 10 a.m. and ends on Sunday, July 17 at 10 a.m. This year’s theme is SPJST—Soaring to New Heights. This year’s camp will have some new activities. We will be spending a whole day at the challenge course. We will also spend some time at the ceremonial grounds with storytelling and camp songs. Of course, we will also have many hours of swimming, canoeing, archery, crafts, horseback riding, and hiking. We ask that campers arrive no earlier than 9:45 a.m. on Thursday. There is much preparation between the camp directors and the leaders. This time enables us to be certain everything is in order prior to your arrival. Things to Bring to Camp • sheets • jeans (mandatory if riding horses) • pillow • personal articles (toothbrush, soap, shampoo, etc.) • light blanket • flashlight • towels and washcloths
VĚSTNÍK
Please pick up your campers between 9:30 and 10 a.m. Please do not come earlier as we have activities planned until then. Also, please do not be late either as we will have many things to do in preparation of our District Two Camp Reunion. While this may seem like a big inconvenience to some, we really need everyone to depart camp to ensure that no camper is left behind. This will also enable you and your camper to enjoy lunch together. It also gives us time to do the things needed for the reunion without worrying about the safety of children. We look forward to seeing your smiling face and all your enthusiasm at Camp Val Verde on Thursday, July 14.

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club meets September 5 Dear Readers, On Saturday, July 29, 2006, I went
to Fiesta Texas. We enjoyed the amusement rides, saw shows, and went to the pool. On Saturday August 5, we went to State YAD in Temple, Texas. I entered the Special Category contest. We went to our monthly meeting

Lodge 1, Fayetteville Youth Club Begins Summer with Lake Picnic The June meeting of SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville Youth Club began the summer with a wet n’ wild party at Fayette Lake. A short n’ sweet meeting was held under the pavilion. The youth leader gave us the camp teeshirts and reminded us about turning in camp forms. Everyone was too anxious to get in the water. We had four jet skis and a large inflatable that seated three peo-
ple. You had to hold on for dear life or you would be bounced off like the blob. We also had a tube called Big Bertha. Sitting in getting situated was only the beginning . . . then the wild bouncing around started. Two of the jet skis were provided by Mr. Ronnie. The other two were provided by Wayne Peschel. District Two Skating Party: February 11
Dear Members, It is time once again to see many of our friends from around the district. Our last gathering was at the lock-in which seems like such a long time ago. I am looking forward to seeing all of you at our annual District Two Skating Party on Sunday, February 11, 2007, at Skate Haven in Temple. The time is from 5:15 to 7:15 p.m. Each year, this activity seems to get bigger and better. Hopefully, we will have the biggest turnout ever. Please bring a friend who is not an SPJST member and maybe he or she will meet so many neat people and have so much fun that he/she will want to join your youth club. Think of the points you can get at this one activity if you talk them into joining. If you are not a skater, come anyway. All youth will be in a drawing for many door prizes. Who knows—you may win a chocolate heart or a teddy bear for your sweetheart! There will be all sorts of prizes. This is one social where everyone is a winner. I hope to see you all at Skate Haven on Sunday, February 11! Fraternally, Patsy Koslovsky District Two Youth Counselor —SPJST—

Healthy treats that sweeten summer
With the end of the school year on the horizon, it’s time to start planning your family summer fun! Top your grocery checklist with healthy summer treats that will appeal to the whole family. “It’s not as hard as it seems,” says Laura Molseed, registered dietitian for Del Monte Foods, “to find something that is both healthy and delicious.” Whether you’re at a backyard barbecue, hanging out by the pool, or taking a trip to the park, there are a variety of quick and healthy treats that will please everyone in the family. “Keep your kitchens stocked with fruit cups, unsweetened applesauce and whole grain crackers for quick snacks,” says Trish Calvo of Shape magazine. “Animal crackers and fig bars are good for something sweet and they tend to be free of both high-fructose corn syrup and trans fats. Another option is to give your kids a lightly sweetened cereal, dry as a

treat. You can also take their favorite morning cereal and mix it with some raisins or dried cranberries for extra fiber.” “There’s no shortage of ideas for healthy treats,” says Molseed, who offers these tips for healthy snacking.
• Combat the heat with a cool treat. Try new Del Monte® Fruit ChillersTM (www.delmonte.com.). This unique sorbet can be found in the canned fruit aisle and is the first product of its kind that allows the consumer to freeze and eat at their leisure. “I usually don’t eat sweets, but since Fruit Chillers contain three-fourths serving of real fruit per cup and 100 percent Vitamin C, I allow myself and my kids this one treat,” says Jennifer Horowitz, a mother of two from Briarcliff, New York. Each frozen sorbet is a good source of nutrition and a guilt-free way to indulge your sweet tooth, cool off, and save your diet from a meltdown!” • Make sure your snacks are as ready to go as you are. Because summer is often filled with spontaneous road trips or jaunts to the beach, keep your pantry stocked with homemade trail mix that includes raisins, nuts, and crackers to easily add into your beach bag. You can pack them into any size

September 4 and September 11 were my first two appearances as SPJST State King. September 4 was Westfest, where I rode in Melanie and David’s famous Corvette during the parade. State Queen Jackie and I had a great time throwing candy and waving at the spectators. After the parade, we went to the SPJST booth at the Westfest fairgrounds. At the booth, the Royalty Court helped man a bean bag toss game where fest visitors could win prizes. We were also taken to the cultural amphitheatre where State Youth Director John Hoelscher gave Queen Jackie, Duke Ty, Duchess Chandee, and me a fine introduction to the crowd. The following Saturday, we all met up at Caldwell’s Kolache Fest, where SPJST was sponsoring a kolache eating contest. The Royalty Court walked around the festival, handing out flyers for the big competition. After gathering enough people, the contest began. There were teams, girls, boys, women’s, and men’s divisions. Each was entertaining to watch. However, we kept pretty busy, loading trays with kolaches, cleaning the competition tables, and refilling water cups for the participants. We had a great time, and I felt the day ended all too soon. I am really looking forward to my next appearances, and I would like to thank Jackie, Ty, Chandee, and their families for making the appearances such a wonderful time. —SPJST—
On Saturday, August 7, 2010, our youth club held a short meeting at State YAD in Temple at the Mayborn Center. In between all the excitement we were able to hold a meeting and discuss a few topics. Door prizes were awarded to a few lucky ones, and the meeting was over. We then went into the State YAD award ceremony where Sam Vanicek was crowned State King and Ty Stock was crowned State Duke. They are both from Lodge 24, Cyclone. Way to go! Our next meeting will be held on September 12 at Flag Hall for a ice cream social with all our grandparents. Your reporter, Ty Stock —SPJST—

Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Host Successful Glow-in-the-Dark Party
On October 6, 2013, Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club held a glow-in-thedark/black light party, which was also a membership drive. We had a wonderful time. We hope to have them back! We draped the dance floor area with large sheets of cardboard decorated with neon markers and spray paint. We
hung black lights in the middle to give off the glowing effect. State Youth Director Lynette Talasek and District Two Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky shared our amazing youth program with the visitors while the current youth group met with a gentleman from Applebee’s to discuss our upcoming fundraiser. Once our meetings were finished, we had all the kids get in the middle of the cardboard and switched the lights. They had a blast looking at the shirts and clothing that glowed. We had a va-

The king and queen are selected on the basis of the presentation of a prepared speech during which they are scored on content, delivery and overall poise. All of the individuals competing for the titles of SPJST State King and SPJST State Queen are winners in their own right, having been selected to represent their respective districts as king and queen candidates. The first SPJST State Queen was

selected in 1963 and an SPJST State King was added for the first time in 1966. Today’s winning State King and Queen representatives receive scholarships and together with their State Duke and Duchess represent SPJST at various statewide functions, parades, and festivals and various city and community events.

H H H H H Past State Royalty Speeches H H H H H 1971 State King Speech Anton Kaluza Lodge 6, Cottonwood “Why I Would Like To Be A Youth Leader” Youth today face the most trying times in their nation’s history, a history that never before has been so filled with drugs, sex, and generation gaps. Somewhere, though, there must be an answer. And I think I might be able to provide at least a part of it. Youth today don’t know which way to turn. They are afraid to talk to their parents because they are scared they will be laughed at or brushed aside. How can parents expect their children to grow up in the right social climate if the children can’t come to them when they need help. Naturally, however, the home isn’t always where the trouble lies. There is bad company, the movies and obscene books on the stands. These can be bought easily and often they are. Why? You ask. Well, maybe the kids don’t have anything better to do. Or, why are summer activities like baseball and swimming no longer a part of the children’s lives? There are solutions to this, and I think the SPJST is one of them. The opportunities are there, at least, to make a person want to better himself. And the youth clubs may be the answer. Should I some day become a youth leader, I would strive not for fun and games only, I would strive to make the young realize they have a place in life, a place that can provide them a successful future. Like we have it today, activities only once a month are too few and far between. I would like for the youth clubs to have planned activities at least twice a month, if not every week. I am talking about swimming, hayrides and other functions. We the youth need to take an active part in life, because one day we will be running this nation. And where will you be? Probably in the rocking chair wondering what happened to this country. The youth need a chance to prove themselves when they are young. They need to show they can handle responsibilities, and one way to prove that is to give them responsibilities. Let them handle money, be responsible for making arrangements for picnics and so on. If we keep feeding everything to the children, they won’t know what it is to work. Therefore, as I speak to you here today, I say give the youth a chance. And if I ever became a youth leader, I grant you, one thing my members will receive a chance.
Because remember, it may be the only chance they get. They need it now, before it is too late and they are on the road to trouble. And one last thought: You, too, were a youth one time and aren’t you grateful for every chance you were given? Thank you.
1971 State Queen Speech Pat Parma Lodge 130, Dallas
There are many reasons why I am proud to be a member of the SPJST, and I will state only a few to- night, since time is limited. First, I will say that membership in the SPJST has been a family tradition on both my father’s and mother’s side, dating back to my grandparents on both sides beyond 60 years. It only stands to reason that anyone would be proud to belong to an organization that has been so highly regarded by his ancestors for such a long time. Our SPJST was organized on July 1, 1897, with 25 lodges and 868 charter members, and on December 31, 1962, we had 145 lodges, with over 33,000 members and over $37 million worth of insurance in force. This continuous rapid growth of the SPJST is another reason for my pride in this organization. I am also proud to be able to say that our fraternal organization continued insurance of all certificate- holders who were active in both World Wars at the same premium rate at which the certificate was issued. We did not raise our premiums, as did some stock companies, who increased their premiums as much as $100 per $1,000 worth of insurance on their policyholders. These are only a few of the reasons why I am proud to be a member of the SPJST. I am personally aware through my own experience of how a person can derive educational benefits through a certificate issued by this great fraternal organization. When I was three months old, my parents took out a $2,000 18-year endowment certificate, and I am now using this money to further my education. I am now in my second year of college and the endowment certificate has been a great help to me in reaching this point. After reaching the age of 18, I immediately took out more insurance to continue my membership in the SPJST and be of some service to the organization in the near future. Thank you.
The most important thing is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the umph but the struggle. The essential thing is to have fought well! This Olympic creed has been recited repeatedly by many gifted athletes striving for victory in the world-famous Olympic games. Young people who have trained for years in these individual fields have learned to accept this creed to work toward the prized gold medal. Independently or as a small team, they discipline themselves to function to their very highest capacity to achieve their goal. Why do I speak of these talented athletes and their impressive creed? When I heard their creed I could relate it easily with our youth club, as it does not matter how small a lodge is. Its youth club can be very successful if its members all take part and try hard to make it successful. The youth organization, being a vital link to its mother lodge, helps promote the unity and fellowship so badly needed between the young people and the adult members. Without it, there would be no way to transmit the many new ideas and undertakings we youth may propose. Since it is obvious how important a youth club is to its mother lodge, can one question the service of a small club? A small youth club has the opportunity to grow into a better and bigger organization by putting forth a genuine attempt to get new members. If the meetings and social functions are made interesting enough, social members will soon have enough interest to perhaps encourage their parents to take part, and thus add new members to the mother lodge. But essentially, the small club must be sincere in its efforts to better itself, through membership drives, through 100 percent cooperation in club projects through participation in district and state activities. Remember, it is the vitality of the few that often out- wits the dawdling, passive ventures of a large, but disorganized group. If your lodge is small, there should be no reason why the youth should be deprived of a club of their own. Adopt the Olympic creed as your motto. Get in the midst of the action — plan ahead — set goals and make it truly a gold medal club. Remember, the most important thing is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is, to have really tried to make your youth club a real asset to its parent lodge.

In 1970, a $250 scholarship was awarded at State Youth Achievement Day to the youngsters who had earned the most merit points in his/her lodge over the preceding three-year period. Today, a $1,500 scholarship is presented at State Youth Achievement Day to a teen youth club member. The teen from each district with the most total merit
points over the previous three years is eligible to compete for this scholarship. The top teen submits an 850- to 1,000-word essay that is judged on neatness, content, and mechanics. Merit points are earned through youth club participation. The winners of the SPJST State Merit Scholarships have been as follows:

1953 • 50 Youth Clubs for 50 SPJST Youth Program Years • 2003 A 50s theme celebrated the program’s golden anniversary 10 years ago.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of SPJST Youth Clubs in 2003, a 20-foot tall by 10-foot wide display of a glittered cake surrounded by cupcakes and topped with candles was featured at State Youth Achievement Day in August at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple. Each cupcake included the name of a youth participating at State YAD. The 50 candles represented the 50 active youth clubs in 2003. The cake was designed and created by former youth club member and SPJST Home Office Vestnik/Communication Assistant Katherine Morris of Lodge 47, Seaton.

Universal Life. A flexible protection plan issued to ages 0 through 80 which offers both a guaranteed and current interest rate on the cash value accumulation. Estate Builder (Juvenile Term). The gift for the future. This inexpensive term provides youth ages 0 to 18 with $10,000 of coverage for a one-time payment of $100 per unit (maximum of two units). At age 25, SPJST will offer to convert the term coverage to five times the original face amount regardless of health.
Annuities. Both qualified (IRA) and non-qualified are offered to SPJST members. Interest rates are posted every week in SPJST’s weekly newspaper, Vestnik. For current rates, contact the SPJST Home Office, refer to the Vestnik, or visit www.spjst.org.
In many cases, the insurance application process can be accomplished at your home in one meeting. At other times, it may take an additional visit since the sales agent may need to spend some time assessing the information you provide in the initial meeting before he or she can recommend the appropriate life insurance solution. For more information on the life insurance options available to you, please contact your local lodge sales agent. If you’re not sure who that is, call the SPJST Insurance Department at (800) 727-7578, and you will be put in touch with a sales agent in your area. HHHHHHHHHHHHH
