VӖSTNÍK

The Christmas and New Year holidays have come and gone. And,

here it is January of another year. Best wishes to all of our dear Vestnik readers for a happy, healthy, and successful year in 2014. With the holidays, we have a slight backlog of items awaiting print in the Vestnik. So please stay turned for these and many other items:

• Lodge 29, Taylor Christmas Party photos • Lodge 84, Dallas photos • Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point Christmas Party photos • Photos from Christmas parades in Fort Worth, Temple, Belton, and Hewitt

Let’s ‘Step Up To The Plate’ in 2014 SPJST’s membership campaign for 2014 is “Step Up To The Plate.” The campaign will be introduced at the awards banquet on Saturday, January 25 at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple. All lodge leaders and members are invited to attend. See page 1 for more information. Keynote speaker will be Temple businessman and American entrepreneur Drayton McLane, Jr. What an honor it is to have Mr. McLane at our banquet. Baylor University announced last week that its football stadium under construction just off Interstate 35 in Waco, Texas, will be named McLane Stadium in honor of Mr. McLane and his family. McLane provided the lead gift, the largest capital donation in school history, for the stadium in March 2012. With the donation came naming rights and at the time the McLane

family asked that the $260 million facility simply be named Baylor Stadium. But the school’s Board of Regents apparently had other ideas, and McLane acquiesced. “With his continued generosity to the University, the board felt that naming our new football stadium McLane Stadium would appropriately honor Drayton McLane and his family for their remarkable generosity and visionary leadership, both of which have helped give rise to this extraordinary period in the history of our University,” Board Chairman Richard S. Willis said in a press release on Monday, December 30. “Drayton is a humble servant and did not seek such recognition, but he has reluctantly conceded to having his name on the stadium, and we are delighted,” he said. The 45,000-seat stadium is scheduled for completion in time for the start of the 2014 season. Next week’s Vestnik will feature more banquet details, including Mr. McLane’s biography and a presentation of local lodge fraternalists of the year.

With Sympathy We send heartfelt sympathy to Publication Committee Chairman Jarolyn Popp and her family. Jarolyn’s father, Emil Matula, passed away on December 27. Brother Emil was an active member of Lodge 133, San Antonio for many years. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was a Pearl Harbor survivor. His funeral service was on January 3 at St. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Granger, Texas. —SPJST—

History of West Museum Board expresses thanks

Dear SPJST Supreme Lodge, Local Lodges, and West Benevolence Fund Committee, The History of West Museum is honored and grateful to have been the recipient of the $6,000 donation to our museum. We also wish to thank Freddie and Janice Kaluza for recognizing

the costly renovation needs of the museum building and recommending this gift. Our museum’s mission is to promote and preserve the history and heritage of West and our surrounding communities. We feel it is important for our children and future generations to remember our ancestors who settled here. They were a resilient people who endured many hardships. As evidenced by our town’s recent tragedy, the History of West Museum will also showcase the strength and stability of the descendents of these early ancestors and symbolize hope for the town’s future. As requested by the SPJST organization, this gift will be used for electrical needs, lights, and photo reproduction. Acknowledgement will be made public in the form of a plaque in the museum. Our goal is to open by the fall of 2014. Thank you, Georgie Hutyra, President History of West Museum Board —SPJST—

Insurance Department laying groundwork for a more user friendly business model

The basic unit of value within SPJST is the relationship. The quality of that relationship — in large part — depends on the ability of the SPJST Home Office and devoted leaders on every level to provide service to our loyal members. “Moving forward, one of the most important objectives of SPJST and its marketing area, is to work on developing and in many cases, ‘rekindling’ relationships with our longtime and devoted members,” says SPJST Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride. “Effective outreach takes a high level of organization, excellent sales and communication skills, and a solid team of Home Office professionals helping to bring it all together,” he says. To that end, the Home Office is laying the groundwork for a more responsive, more engaging and a more “user friendly” approach to business. “That means ‘user-friendly’ to the membership and ‘user-friendly’ to the sales force,” says Vice President McBride. From a staffing perspective, members can expect to see a few changes in the coming weeks and months. Within the Insurance Department, two staffing shifts — in the name of “user-friendliness” took place at the end of December. Donica Zabcik, a 10-year veteran of the Insurance Department, moved from her role as Administrative Specialist and Donica Zabcik Underwriting Assistant to New Business Marketing and Research Technician. “Donica will continue to review all of the applications that come in,” says Vice President McBride. “In that regard, her role has not changed. She will still be working with sales agents and ensuring that the applications are complete before advancing them to underwriting.” “What’s changed is Donica will also be responsible for collecting, reporting, and interpreting analytics data,” says Vice President McBride. While SPJST maintains a detailed account summary for each of its members, the data within these files is being updated as a necessary first-step

in providing routine and efficient customer service. Processes for reviewing and acting on the data being collected will be implemented in 2014. Also, within the Insurance Department, Lori Slack was reassigned from her role as New Business/Certificate Issue Technician to Underwriting Assistant, a role previously occupied by Ms. Zabcik. Ms. Slack has seven years of SPJST Accounting Department Lori Slack and Insurance Department experience. As Underwriting Assistant, she will perform clerical duties, assist with telephone consults and preparing documents working in concert with SPJST Underwriter Doni Powell. As Underwriter, Ms. Powell, with 13 years of SPJST Insurance Department experience, reviews individual applications for life insurance to evaluate the degree of risk involved and determining the acceptance of applications. “The central role of the UnderDoni Powell writer is to help SPJST evaluate risk and protect SPJST from acquiring non-profitable business,” says Vice President McBride. “That doesn’t mean that every risk should be declined. It’s a balancing act that requires a lot of creativity from the underwriter. It’s an art and not an exact science.” To that end, SPJST worked with its actuary, Allen Bailey & Associates, during the month of November to conduct a thorough audit of its underwriting processes relative to fraternal and commercial insurers. As a result, the Insurance Department will be making some adjustments to its underwriting processes in 2014. “This was a review that was needed. Industrywide, insurance regulators and reinsurers are demanding greater accountability for the life insurance business,” says Vice President McBride. At the present time, employees

within the SPJST Insurance Department are working in tandem with other SPJST Home Office Departments, making preparations for the annual SPJST Awards Banquet which will be held on Saturday, January 25 at Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple.

State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Presents January Updates

Temple Businessman and Philanthropist Drayton McLane, Jr. to Address Awards Banquet SPJST Home Office takes pleasure in inviting all lodge leaders to attend the 2013 SPJST Awards Banquet to be held on Saturday, January 25, 2014, at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple. The event begins at 1 p.m. and is expected to conclude by 6:30 p.m. following a catered barbecue dinner. The January 25 event will also represent the statewide unveiling of SPJST’s 2014 “Step Up to the Plate!” Membership Drive. The 2014 membership program is loaded with incentives for sales agents, members, and lodges working to make a positive difference in the lives of SPJST members. Keynote presenter for the event will be Temple businessman and philanthropist Drayton McLane, Jr., founder and chairman of the board of McLane Advanced Technologies. Mr. McLane, past owner of Houston Astros, is a graduate of Baylor University, where he previously served as a trustee and regent and holds lifetime Regent Emeritus status. To facilitate your attendance, every lodge will have mileage paid for at least one vehicle. Lodges that will be receiving incentive awards will be authorized mileage for up to two vehicles. Lodge presidents and secretaries: There will be a letter mailed to you the first part of January informing you that your lodge received mileage for another extra vehicle. Award-winning sales agents will also be receiving notification from the Insurance Department. In order to plan for the banquet portion of the awards ceremony, the Home Office is requesting a head count on or before January 17. Efforts of lodge secretaries to get this information in prior to the deadline will be greatly appreciated!

All lodges are entitled to send 2013 and/or 2014 officers to the banquet free of charge. Each officer is entitled to bring a guest. A reservation form is being sent to lodge secretaries. If you have any questions with regards to this process, please feel free to call Assistant to the President Sandra Dubcak at (800) 727-7578. She will be handling the reservations for this awards banquet.

Happy New Year! First and foremost, please know that Fraternalist of the Year honorees that did not turn in paperwork may still receive recognition at the awards banquet on January 25. We will do our best to get your biographical sketch into the event program, time permitting. The main thing is that we want to give recognition where recognition is due and we would like to be able to present you with your medal during the awards ceremony. If you have any questions as it relates to the Fraternalist of the Year program or presentation, please give me a call at (254) 534-0681. I hope you had a Merry Christmas and wish you a healthy and happy new year! I really enjoyed the month of December having the chance to meet with many of you. Thank you for sharing the joy of the holiday season with me. According to preliminary financial data, 2013 looks to have been a good year financially for SPJST. From a fraternal perspective, it was also a very good year. Even so, we have the power to make 2014 even better. We look forward to new experiences and helping lodges to identify clearly defined goals that unite members and improve life within the community. I will be setting time aside to visit with many of you in 2014. I will be scheduling and attending lodge meetings that I did not have a chance to visit in 2013.

Important Deadlines The following reports are due on the dates listed below. Thursday, January 2 New Officers Listing (address, phone listing, and email)

Friday, January 10 Fraternal Incentive Report Year-End and Year-End Fraternal Support and Community Services Report Friday, February 14 Outgoing Officer Awards (Please note: The Outgoing Officer Award is meant for a seasoned fraternalist who is likely to be concluding his or her service as a lodge officer and not likely to hold another lodge officer position.) Thursday, May 15 990 and 990-T to IRS and copy to Home Office

If all these reports are submitted on time, your lodge will be able to use item number two on the Year-End Fraternal Incentive Report as one of your fraternal acts. Please know if these reports are not submitted by the deadline, any incentive money your lodge has coming will be held until these reports are received. If your lodge has not addressed these items, please make sure to do so as soon as possible. These programs benefit your lodge as well as your members. If you need assistance, please feel free to contact me.

SPJST Everyday Heroes If you would like to recognize the Everyday Heroes in your lodge, please call me at the Home Office.

SPJST Lifetime Achiever Award Lifetime Achiever Award requests will be due two weeks prior to your district’s spring meeting. With regards to the SPJST Lifetime Achiever Award, it is meant to recognize those individuals within the lodge who have devoted a lifetime of service to their lodge or Society. Generally stated, that reflects an individual in his or her golden years who has contributed a minimum of 10 active years of devoted service. In recent years, some very youthful individuals have been designated by their lodges to receive the honor. Even as SPJST greatly appreciates the time and energy of its young members, please keep in mind the Lifetime Achiever Award is meant to celebrate

the contributions of your lodge’s longtime and seasoned fraternalists.

Officer Elections All lodges should have elected officers in November or December. Please take a moment to complete the paperwork sent to each lodge and return to Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska. Information requested is the names, addresses, phone numbers, and emails of the officers for the coming year. Remember, this counts as one of your fraternal acts for the year if all paperwork is submitted on time. If this has already been done, thank you. While lodges are electing new officers, this would also be an excellent time to update information in the back section of the Vestnik. If any information has changed, please contact Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny at (800) 727-7578 or send an email to melaniez@vvm.com with the updated information.

Outgoing Officers Do not forget to honor your officers who have given their time and dedication to your lodge. Remember with regards to SPJST Outgoing Officer plaques, the idea — once again — is to honor lodge officials who may be near or at the end of their service tenure to the lodge. Generally stated, eligibility is based on being an outgoing lodge officer or trustee who has not been re-elected for the upcoming years and does not plan to seek reelection. The plaques should be awarded at your local lodge meetings. All requests should be in the State Fraternal Activities Coordinators office by February 14.

Progressive 42 Domino Tournament Please make plans to be at Lodge 47, Seaton on Saturday, January 11 for a day of fun and fraternalism. Lodge 47, Seaton will host the State Progressive 42 Tournament. You do not need a partner to enter this tournament. We will draw for partners at the start of each round. If you need an entry form, please go to the SPJST website at www.spjst.org, click on Fraternal Activities, and then click on upcoming fraternal activities for a flier and an entry form. All participants are encouraged to pre-register so we will have some idea as to how many players plan to participate and for meal preparations. The registration fee for members and non-members will be $7. If any member knows of someone (member

or non-member) who would like to participate, please invite them and submit an entry form.

100 Pennies Scholarship Drive This year’s goal is to raise $20,000 in addition to the Supreme Lodge allocation. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Since its inception in 1982, the Scholarship Program has presented SPJST scholars with near 1,700 scholarships valued at more than $1 million. That is a lot of pennies! Donations of any amount will be accepted and added to the general scholarship fund that is maintained by the Home Office. No amount is too small or too large. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive continues through March 31, 2014.

SPJST Scholarship Application Deadline The deadline for submitting applications for the SPJST Scholarship is Wednesday, February 1. Any student (high school seniors and college undergraduates) who has not previously received a scholarship is eligible to apply. For an SPJST General Scholarship or Leadership Grant Application and complete guidelines, please call the SPJST Home Office and ask for Assistant to the President Sandra Dubcak at (800) 727-7578 or (254) 7731575 or visit www.spjst.org.

Tarok Tournament The SPJST State Tarok Tournament will be held on February 1. Lodge 6, Cottonwood will host this event. All participants are encouraged to pre-register so we will have some idea as to how many players plan to participate. The registration fee for members and non-members will be $7. If anyone knows of someone (member or nonmember) who would like to participate, please encourage them to submit an entry.

Texas Fraternal Bowling Tournament Please make your plans now to be in New Braunfels, Texas, on Saturday, February 8 at Fiesta Lanes, located at 1202 Huisache Avenue (behind HEBWalnut Street) for the 10th Annual Fraternal Alliance Of Texas (FAOT) Bowling Tournament to raise funds for scholarships. All lodges and/or members are encouraged to bring an item for the silent auction. The auction will be held in conjunction with the bowl-

ing tournament to raise additional funds. Those who participated in past years will agree that it was a fun day filled with lots of fraternalism shared with many brother and sister fraternals from all parts of the state of Texas. Teams again this year will consist of five members – any combination of men and women over the age of 16. Lane assignments and late registration (provided lanes are available) will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday with bowling starting at 12 noon. Join Hands Day As your lodge makes plans for the coming year, we strongly encourage all lodges to mark May 3 on your calendar and make plans to organize a local Join Hands Day service project with those lodges that have a youth club or maybe with another fraternal or community group. The idea is simple: Adults and youth working together with other organizations to make good things happen in your community. Join Hands Day is a national event

sponsored by America’s Fraternal Benefit Societies in partnership with The Points Light Foundation and the Volunteer Center National Network. It is a day when young people and adults connect as equal partners in planning an activity that fixes or improves a local problem and affirms the values of caring and working together. The Home Office again will offer a $100 incentive to all lodges who register their project with the Home Office. You can do this by completing the Join Hands Day flier and returning it to the SPJST Home Office. This year, American Fraternal Alliance is asking that you not register your projects on their website prior to Join Hands Day. They are asking that you share stories of your projects, including and especially, photos on their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/fraternalalliance. We can help you with that if you have any questions. Our goal for 2014 is to see 50 or more lodges participate! What can your lodge do? Projects from previous years include baking for the needy, cemetery clean-up, highway beautification, assisting veterans and senior citizens programs, and conducting a variety of fix-up and refurbishing projects. You have plenty of time to decide what you want to do in 2014. The

main thing is to make a commitment now. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me or Tammy. We are here to help if you need assistance. Please feel free to contact me: mobile phone - (254) 534-0681 or email frankh@spjst.com. You can also contact Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez by telephone (800) 727- 7578 or (254) 773-1575 or email - tammym@spjst.com. Your District FAC is also available to assist you also. We thank Mr. Mitchell, Lamerle, and Regina Peevey for all their time and efforts in getting this accomplished. Under new business, we recently gained a new member—John Paul Vogel. He is the grandson of our longtime, faithful member Hilda Burtis. John Paul is a lawyer in the Fort Worth area. Recently, our president was visiting with him and discussing our lodge. We hope to get things rolling again on the restoration after the first of the year. Our roof is in critical condition and needs replacing. Our heating and cooling system is inadequate. It is not comfortable in the winter nor summer. John Paul seemed to be very interested and said to let him know when we get the restoration started up again. That is very encouraging to get some younger members interested in our lodge; for we old folks are not going to be around always to carry on. This lodge is a very old, historical building and definitely needs to be preserved. It is very beneficial in serving the community in so many ways—for school functions, miscellaneous fundraisers, weddings, reunions, etc. just to name a few. We are very proud to have John Paul added to our membership. Vice President A.W. Zajicek brought us up-to-date on SPJST

Lodge 181, Conroe Hosts SPJST Float in Christmas Parade

Lodge 181, Conroe members ride the SPJST Float in the Kiwanis Christmas Parade held Saturday, December 14, 2013, in downtown Conroe.

Treasurer JoAnn Wilcox gave the financial report. Both were approved as presented. December hostesses of Lupe Esparza, Mary Jean Loy, and Darlene Thompkins were thanked for doing such a great job. Decorations in the Christmas theme were by Rose Ann Spann and Lola Taylor. Thanks, ladies! Everything looked lovely. Sunshine Person Paula Hall was not able to attend, but she called me and asked if I would tell all that she received a thank you note from Lucille Kret thanking everyone for all the cards she and Linda received from the Club and its members. Lucille also said she would welcome visitors. Her address is c/o Azle Manor, Room 605, 721 Dunaway Lane, Azle, Texas 76020. After this report, I said I had lots more to talk about as I received a call from longtime member Annie Whitsell. It was so nice to hear from her. She still misses everyone and said all she does is eat, sleep, and watch television. She said her eyesight is getting worse. She uses a magnifying glass to read my Vestnik articles and her mail. She talked about a son that lives in Fort Worth and a daughter that lives in the HEB area. She said her daughter comes over every other weekend, on Saturdays they go to the grocery store and do other shopping, eat out, and go to a movie. The last movie they saw was Last Vegas, and she talked about how funny it was. I guess we talked about 25 minutes, and she said she still misses Harold. Annie has some friends that escort her to take communion to a few homebound from her church. Annie and Harold always did this for years. Then Camille Bolcer called and said that she doesn’t think she can go to our gatherings anymore. She is going to be 97 years young, and it is

just too difficult to walk. I was so sorry to hear this as I’ve been picking her up – she is such a delightful and beautiful lady. She will be missed. I spoke on the phone with Elsie Anders as I was hoping she would drive over to my house and go with me, but a family member was having a birthday, and she couldn’t go. Elsie, maybe next time! Elsie said she still does not drive across town. While I still had the floor, I reported that Sister Maggie, the Baseball Nun, died in November. She dearly enjoyed all the Texas Rangers games which she and Sister Frances always attended. Both were special fans of Nolan Ryan. Sister Maggie was buried in a white casket trimmed in Rangers blue with the team logo in several places. It was paid for by the team, according to Nolan Ryan. The Fort Worth Star Telegram had a beautiful article with lots of quotes by Nolan Ryan and Bob Schieffer. Sister Frances has been in the hospital, and I hope she is much better and will be back at 10:30 a.m. mass on Sunday.

I further reported that longtime member Agnes Reznicek was having her 100th birthday on December 16. Birthday cards for Aggie, Camille (December 8), and Frances Mathews (December 19) were passed around for everyone to sign. Christmas cards for some of our longtime members who have not been attending due to health were passed around for all to sign. Ladies, all of you have been missed. Last, I showed a photo of the LuzaMatous family reunion taken in 1965 which included our member Tracy Horn and was in the syllabus booklet from the Texas Czech Genealogical Society conference held in July. Tracy did not know this photo was included, but did say a relative belongs to the Society. I’ll probably never again be asked to give a report as I talked so much. The signing of “Happy Birthday” went out to December celebrants Camille Bolcer, Lupe Esparza, Carolyn Irby, Lucille Kret, Mary Jean Loy, Marilyn Llewellyn, Debbie

Skrasek, Helen Skrasek, and Lola Taylor. May you all have many more. Everyone enjoyed the exchange of gifts. Then we had a show-and-tell of what everyone received. Winners of the 50/50 dollar games were Lorraine Cross and Tracy Horn. Door prizes were provided by Anna Johnson (two) and Lola Taylor. Thanks, ladies! Special thanks to Rose Ann Spann for providing the entertainment by Nancy Worcester as all enjoyed her story telling and ventriloquism. She was very entertaining and funny. Her program was slanted toward Christmas and was just perfect. Betty and Stanley Krenek were missed as they were vacationing in Hawaii as an anniversary gift from their children. Congratulations – don’t know the number. And, Betty, thanks for baking the ham we had for lunch. We heard Betty baked the ham and put it in the refrigerator at St. Thomas. All Mary Ann Krivanek had to do was heat it. Your ham was wonderful. Hostesses for January will be Mary Ann Krivanek, Lola Taylor, and Lib-

The Czechs founded several organizations and clubs in Texas and throughout the United States to aid in their desire for a free homeland and to show their patriotism. The best known was the Ceske Narodni Sdruzeni (CNS), or Czech National Alliance. The Texas division, organized at the SPJST Convention in Galveston in 1916, was the first CNS division organized. The regional headquarters was originally in Houston, but was later moved to West where it flourished. All groups of Czechs worked together for the liberation movement. Money was the first priority. At Masaryk’s request, not even a

single dollar was to come from foreign sources. “This is our revolution and we must pay for it with our own money,” he said. Thus, local chapters raised money by a variety of ways. Speakers delivered patriotic speeches about freeing the homeland and the hat was passed. Farmers donated bales of cotton for auction. Local chapters also held bazaars. The total amount raised in Texas was $100,000. The crowning achievement for the CNS Texas region came in 1918 with a statewide bazaar held in Taylor, Texas. SPJST Floats Participate in Morgan’s Point Resort Christmas Parade

SPJST was represented in the Morgan’s Point Resort Christmas Parade held Friday, December 13, 2013. The parade route started at Ansay Park, traveled throughout most of the city, and ended at city hall where Santa greeted the entries. LEFT PHOTO: Pictured on the Smurf-themed

ally every local chapter of the 87 in Texas and the two in Louisiana participated in some way. Near the end of the war, the regional officers of the Texas branch commissioned Josef Bunata, a wellknown Czech-American editor, to write a history of the Texas CNS group. This book, Pamatnik (Memories), is remarkable not only in the information concerning the individuals

from all over the state who contributed their time and money, but also in the group photographs of many of the members of the local chapters. The pictures invoke the loyalties felt by the participants with the American flag displayed along with flags depicting some feature associated with Czech nationalism. Texas Czechs did indeed fulfill what they saw as their Czech and American duties.

State Youth Director presents January updates

The final weeks of 2013 were filled with Christmas festivities and fun. It was a great chance to visit and — in so many cases — make new friends, too! Active involvement in SPJST can be a blast — and a real family affair, too! A big thank you — Youth Leaders and District Youth Counselors — for the tremendous job you do with our youth. Thanks, too, to all of you for accepting me as your State Youth Director and for the many courtesies that you have extended to me — and my daughter, Zoe. This year has been a tremendous learning experience for me, and I am

looking forward to 2014. I have been amazed by the differences and the similarities in each lodge I have visited. All the youth members have been so willing to help the less fortunate in their communities. We have been so blessed with such selfless youth members and that comes from their families as well as their leaders. I am looking forward to attending your youth meetings in the coming months. Until then, all I can say is thank you and keep up the great work! This year’s Temple Christmas Parade and SPJST Christmas Open House on December 2 were both wonderful successes! Due to the warm weather we had a huge crowd at this year’s Christmas Open House. Thanks to all of the members who turned out for these events! Both of the SPJST Floats were in the Temple parade. Melanie and David continue to do a first-class job incorporating new ideas for the floats. Members of the SPJST State Royalty Court had to endure the warm evening and not the cold while

riding in the Corvettes. They did an exceptional job of representing SPJST. Later, at the Open House, Royalty Court members helped the children decorate Christmas sugar cookies. It was a great time for the youth and the young at heart. Thanks to Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club members and Youth Leader Joyce Kraatz. They painted many masterpieces on the faces of the youngsters who attended the event. I hope that everyone had a Merry Christmas. I wish all of you a happy and prosperous New Year!

2014 Vestnik Projects Youth Leaders, this year our Vestnik projects will be about the youth program and geared towards educating the youth about SPJST, its history, Czech heritage, purpose, benefits, and future. Please try and cover these projects with your youth club as a group. The more the youth realize what SPJST is then the more likely they are to tell others. For those of you with a lower attendance rate, this could be a good opportunity to talk about the program and encourage your youth to bring friends.

2014 SPJST Camp Tee-Shirt Design Contest “We need your good ideas and creativity!” I challenge all youth club members to participate in the camp tee-shirt design contest. Remember the deadline is January 31. This year’s grand prize will be a $100 Visa gift card, and your design on the 2014 camp tee-shirt. There will be first place winners out of the other three age groups and the youth will receive

a $75 Visa gift card. Youth leaders, please encourage all your youth members to participate. All participants will receive twp merit points and a participation certificate. We have many youth who are very creative and talented. This year’s theme is “SPJST Enriching Lives 2014.” I am excited in seeing a number of entries that have already been turned into the Home Office.

SPJST’s Next “Online” Youth Club Meeting Just a reminder that the January “online” youth club meeting will be Monday, January 6 at 7 p.m. For directions on how to join in on the teleconference, go to www.spjst.org/youth_call_in_meeting.html.

Youth Development Workshop This year’s Youth Development Workshop will be conducted by your District Youth Counselor. Please watch your email and the Vestnik for more information. You will be covering topics that pertain to youth achievement day projects where participation is lacking in each of the districts. Please be sure to encourage your youth members to participate.

No youth may receive more than one President’s Volunteer Service Awards during the preceding calendar year. SPJST will recognize youth for volunteer service during January 1, 2013, through December 31, 2013. Volunteer Service Tracking Forms are available from the State Youth Director or the SPJST Youth website. Forms must be returned by February 28 to the State Youth Director. I would really like for all youth leaders to come and stay overnight with us and head home on Sunday, March 23. All youth leaders and their assistants are encouraged to attend. Spouse and guest are welcome to accompany you; if you are planning to bring a spouse or guest, please let me know and I will work with you on making arrangements. We’re going to cover a lot of ground at Saturday’s program, but I plan on doing my best to make it as educational, informative, and fun as I possibly can. Following the day time agenda, we will enjoy a nice meal and a fun-filled evening. We have decided

to change up some of the state sponsored youth contests, and I would really like to get important feedback from all of you. We will also be addressing any questions that you may have about the youth program.

Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club Hosts Dinner for Needy Families

On Sunday, December 15, 2013, Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club hosted a special turkey dinner for three needy families in the Taylor area. We were able to get clothes for each child plus toys according to what was on their wish list. We also made sure to get the parents something, too. The families began arriving around 4 p.m., and the chil-

to see him, and some couldn’t wait to go sit on his lap. We took family pictures with Santa, too. Last, our youth club handed out all of the presents to each person and helped them load them in their vehicles. Only a few family members weren’t able to attend, but they were sent home a to-go meal. I would like to thank our youth club parents for helping so much with wrapping the gifts and preparing the meal. Plus, I would like to thank the

youth club members for being wonderful hosts and being so helpful. Also, a special thanks to District Two Director Jesse Pospisil and Linda for supporting us with a donation and for joining us at our event. We hope we made these families feel special and have a wonderful Christmas. We’ll definitely do this event again next year. Fraternally, Cristy Girod, Youth Leader —SPJST—
