Charles Mikeska Honored for Efforts Following West Explosion

Many unsung heroes emerged on the night of April 17, 2013, in West, Texas, and one of those was Charles Mikeska of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton. As soon as Mikeska, who is assistant superintendent and chief financial officer for West Independent School District, received word about the tragic and fatal explosion at the West Fertilizer Plant, he spent the next 36 hours communicating with authorities and administrators to confirm none of his district employees were killed or injured in the blast. Mikeska’s work did not end there. The district’s operations center, including phones and computers, was destroyed. All but two of the district’s buses were totaled, and all of the district’s buildings except the elementary school were rendered uninhabitable. None of the students or district staff, including personnel inside buildings at the time of the explosion, were harmed. Mikeska, however, was determined to get the city’s children back to school and return a sense of normalcy to a town in devastation. He, along with the district superintendent

and other district officials, worked around the clock to coordinate with other local school districts and agencies for

SPJST member on Food Network SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas member, former ‘Bachelor,’ reality-show

star, commercial pilot, and real-estate developer Jake Pavelka of Dallas is currently appearing on Rachael vs. Guy: Celebrity CookOff on the Food Network. The show began its third season on Monday, January 6 at 8 p.m. Rachael vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-Off is an American Jake Pavelka cooking competition series that pits Team Captains Rachael Ray and Guy Fieri against each other in determining who is the best cooking mentor toward their team of four celebrities. Jake is a member on Team Rachael along with actress Florence Henderson, magician Penn Jillette, and stand-up comic Judy Gold. Team Guy members are football legend Herschel Walker, actor/comedian Chris Kattan, and musical artists Tiffany and Vanilla Ice. Each week, one celebrity will be eliminated, with the “last star standing” winning a $50,000 cash donation toward their charity. Thanks to Lodge 92, Fort Worth members Al and Alene Kercho for sharing an article by David Martindale that appeared in the January 6 Fort Worth Star-Telegram. In the article, Jake comments that this show is tougher than appearing on The Bachelorette in 2009 and Dancing With the Stars in 2010 and starring in The Bachelor in 2010. “It’s true,” Pavelka says in the article. “And it’s because I’ve never cooked while the clock is ticking.

Or against people who definitely know what they’re doing in the kitchen. And I can tell you, everybody this season, they can cook! And it’s no secret that they deliver a challenge every week on the show. “So, yeah, it was absolutely stressful. But it was probably the most fun I’ve had on a show, too.” Best wishes to Jake on the show. Drayton McLane, Jr.

Continued from Page 1.

The grandson of a successful entrepreneur, Drayton experienced firsthand the hard work and dedication it takes to successfully thrive in industry. He began developing his tireless work ethic at age nine by working for his father at the family’s wholesale grocery business, the McLane Company. Mr. McLane received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Baylor University in 1958 and his Master of Business Administration degree from Michigan State University in 1959. Upon completion of his formal education, Drayton came back to begin working at the family business loading trucks on the second shift. He worked his way up and by earning the respect and admiration of his co-workers, he became president and CEO of the company in 1964 and held these positions for 30 years. During his tenure, he propelled the McLane Company into a $19 billion company, achieving an average growth rate of 30 percent per year. Following the McLane Company’s merger with Wal-Mart, Inc. in 1990, he became vice chairman of Wal-Mart while maintaining his position at the McLane Company. After playing key roles in each of these companies’ growth and productivity, he resigned in order to devote more time to the McLane Group, a parent company consisting of familyowned companies operating throughout the world, which until November 2011 included the Houston Astros where he served as chairman and CEO. Drayton McLane completed his

19th season with the Astros in 2011 when he sold the team for more than $650 million. Over the years, their philosophy remained consistent—bring home a World Series championship to Houston and make a positive difference in the community. They were unable to bring home a championship, but they were the first Texas team to make it to the World Series and they also made a very positive difference in the community. Mr. McLane currently serves as chairman on the Scott & White Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees; vice president at large for Boy Scouts of America National Board; member, National Board of Governors, Cooper Institute for Aerobics Research; board director for The Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University; chairman, Opportunity Houston 1.0 and 2.0; board director for United Way of the Gulf Coast of Texas; Baylor College of Medicine Board of Trustees; and The University Cancer Foundation, M.D. Anderson Board of Visitors. Drayton and his wife, Elizabeth, live in Temple. They are proud parents and grandparents. They have two sons, Drayton McLane, III and Denton McLane. Drayton III and wife Amy have three sons, and Denton and his wife Amy have two sons. They are members of First Baptist Church of Belton. Banquet registration forms must be completed and returned to the Home Office by January 17. Online registration is available at www.spjst.org. For additional banquet information, please call Sandra Dubcak at (800) 727-7578 or (254) 773-1575. —SPJST—

assistance in matters such as temporary learning spaces for displaced teachers and students, student transportation issues, and moving furniture, equipment, and supplies to a neighboring district that offered the use of empty school buildings. Mikeska also arranged for portable classrooms to be brought to the only structurally sound campus left in the district to create enough capacity to house an additional three grades—fourth through sixth— to the pre-K through third grade elementary campus. Mikeska was the first in line to greet the students off the bus on their first day back to school following the explosion. For his outstanding efforts and impact on the community following the

explosion, Mikeska was honored by Safety National, a national workers compensation provider, with its Community All Star Award at the West ISD Board Meeting on December 11. As a part of his award, Safety National donated $10,000 to local charity Legacy West Education Foundation on Mikeska’s behalf. The charity is providing support and aid in the rebuilding of West ISD. Tom Hebson, a vice president of Safety National, said Mikeska displayed “outstanding heroism in the face of adversity,” with a spirit and dedication to West ISD and West, Texas, that “never faltered.” Mikeska called the acknowledgment a “humbling experience.” He expressed appreciation for the community support and volunteer efforts in West. Congratulations to Brother Mikeska on this grand award. —SPJST—

Lodge 191, Lufkin reports on dances, activities

The third Friday night dance on December 20, 2013, was a great success. Glenn Lenderman did an outstanding job; Mike Shockley played with Glenn and George Scogin sat in for a while. The music was great! Thanks to everyone who brought an unwrapped toy for the Salvation Army. The toys covered the whole area around the tree. You made some children very happy Christmas morning. The decorators for this dance were Lois St. John, A.C. and Kathy Riley, and Marvin and Diane McDowell. Joel Towers decorated the lobby with a Christmas tree and fireplace that looked like it could warm you through and through. Good job, Joel! We always have lots of good food, and Joel Towers donated a huge box of cutlery. Thanks, Joel! We appreciate you very much. Also, Mike Shockley donated a box of fluorescent bulbs just in the nick of time—we already had to use one of them. The 50-50 drawing was won by Carol Upton. The total amount of tickets sold was $140 so Carol won $70. What a great Christmas present! Also, two tickets each were won by Maria Anderson and Eileen Salyer. On December 31, we had the New Year’s Eve dance. The music was furnished by Nathan Ham and the Country Boys. What a great band and a great entertainer! They played all the way until midnight. Everyone then ate ham, black-eyed peas, cabbage, and cornbread. Everyone should have

District Two: join in the fun of dancing the beseda

Dear Members, Happy New Year! The time is here to get back to the real world, the usual

routine. I could use a few more days, but couldn’t we all. The next performance of our District Two Youth Beseda Dancers will be Sunday, January 19, 2014, at 2 p.m. in Temple at the Country Lane Apartments. We are looking forward to having a performance again and excited for it to be with this fine group of people. We thank Janet Maddux for the invitation.

Following the performance, all dancers, parents, and those interested in becoming a dancer need to meet at Star Hall at 3:15 p.m. If you have a part of costume which needs altering or a new piece is needed, bring it on this day. Practice for all former dancers will be held so each dancer will be able to dance all parts. New members will also be able to practice. Plans will be made on this day for our annual beseda fundraiser which will be held on Sunday, April 27 at Star Hall. All details need to be finalized soon so we can advertise and make this the best ever. Our trip a couple of years ago was so exciting, and my hopes are to have another one this year. Bring ideas of other ways to earn monies and where you, as dancers, would like to go. We can then set our goal and make it happen. If you know of anyone who would like to participate in the 2014 beseda circles, please have them attend this meeting on January 19 at 3:15 p.m. at Star Hall. Please give me a call at (254) 7181606 if you have any questions. Fraternally, Patsy Koslovsky District Two Youth Counselor —SPJST—

Dear Readers, On Sunday, November 17, 2014, youth of Lodge 84, Dallas met for their monthly meeting. In attendance we had two special guests, State Youth Director Lynette Talasek and State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Horak. It was really nice to have them join us as we conducted our meeting. The meeting was brought to order by President Jason Sims. The Pledge of Allegiance and youth club motto were led by Flag Bearer Kendall Tucker; a moment of silence was then observed for our troops and the Philippine disaster victims.

Old and new minutes were then discussed. They were considering doing this in February in conjunction with the membership drive. Sister Novak said more details would be coming as it gets closer. The meeting was then adjourned before we started working on the tray favors we make each year for the patients at Scottish-Rite who are unable to be at home for the holidays. In Memory of Byron Foss

Our angel has been called away. Byron Dwayne Foss passed away peacefully on November 10, 2013, at the age of 64 years while surrounded by family and friends. Byron was born on December 29, 1948, in Rosenberg, Texas; Byron Foss the second child of Clarence and Viola Foss. He was diagnosed with Down’s Syndrome but

his parents rejected doctors’ recommendations that he be institutionalized. Instead, Byron was raised in a loving and caring family and community. He seemed to teach us more than we could ever teach him. Because of mental and physical differences he had challenges, yet he challenged us more by his seeing the world from a different viewpoint. His big smile after a simple hug was priceless. We learned so much from Byron and are forever grateful for the gift God gave us. Byron was preceded in death by father Clarence Foss; and sister Sandra Kunz. He is survived by his mother Viola Foss; brother Terrell (Terry) Foss; nieces Kimberly Dilone and Kristin Jones; nephew Austin Foss; and a large group of loving relatives. Pallbearers were cousins Ronnie Hurta, Kenny Mikel, Gregory Pavlas, Dean Hurta, Tim Novosad, and Russell Hurta. Honorary pallbearers were his buddy Dennis Vacek, his coffee attendant Adolph Chabisek, and his dance partner Jan Vacek. Visitation was November 13 at Garmany and Carden Funeral Chapel in Needville. Service was held at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Needville on November 14 to celebrate Byron’s life with the Reverend Jonathan Murray officiating. Burial followed the service at Needville Public Cemetery. Donations in Byron’s memory can be made to St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church of Needville, Texas or the Needville Public Cemetery. —SPJST—
