hanks to Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point member Charlie Herendon for sharing this. Charlie says, “This is one of the best I have seen in a while. It is so appropriate.” And, yes, it is very appropriate and certainly hits home— especially the editor of a weekly newspaper part.

T

To realize the value of a sister/brother Ask someone who doesn’t have one. To realize the value of 10 years: Ask a newly divorced couple.

To realize the value of four years: Ask a graduate. To realize the value of one year: Ask a student who has failed a final exam.

To realize the value of nine months: Ask a mother who gave birth to a stillborn. To realize the value of one month: Ask a mother who has given birth to a premature baby.

To realize the value of one week: Ask an editor of a weekly newspaper.

To realize the value of one minute: Ask a person who has missed the train, bus or plane. To realize the value of one second: Ask a person who has survived an accident.

Time waits for no one. Treasure every moment you have. You will treasure it even more when you can share it with someone special. To realize the value of a friend or family member: Lose one.

He, too, has always done a great job for years. Reporter will continue with Diana Redd, and she will also take the secretary’s position. Mrs. Ballinger made a motion to accept the officers as presented, and all members seconded the motion. Karen Kaspar installed the officers. The lodge handed out shelled pecans to each family that was present, and some great door prizes were given away. At that time, all the members that joined together then went their separate ways. I would like to thank everyone who came to join in fellowship and good food, and hope that each one had a wonderful Christmas and a happy new year. Diana Redd Secretary/Reporter —SPJST—

Dallas Krouzek Members Enjoy Christmas Party Saturday, February 3, 2014 • Submitted by Carole Faraizl, Recording Secretary

LEFT PHOTO: On the way to be seated at a table of their choice, members stopped by the utility table to pick up their door prize tickets— manned by volunteer member Dorothy Schroeder, their meal tickets— manned by volunteer member Carole Faraizl, and purchase their personal bingo card choices manned by volunteer member Sadie Liska. PHOTO 2: The Dallas Krouzek rescheduled its annual Christmas party from the first Friday in December 2013 to the first Saturday in February 2014 due to the December ice storm cancellation. Fifty members and

their guests were greeted at the Dallas Sokol front door by the Christmas Nutcracker theme decorated sign-in desk by Evelyn Cechan and several of her helpers. PHOTO 3: Members enjoying the buffet line catered by member Bessie Petr, with help from her daughter/member Lynda Novak, member Ann Hoefler, and Bessie’s daughter-in-law. RIGHT PHOTO: The officers’ table contained bingo prizes and the door prizes and all the Christmas decorations the members finally enjoyed— even if it was in February.

These table pictures show the members and their guests. The Dallas Krouzek is thinking of disbanding due to the fact that most of the members who used to attend the meetings have either passed away or are in rest homes, and the younger people all work, so they cannot come to the meetings. The officers are not getting any younger either and can no

longer hold down the two or three or more jobs they already do for the Krouzek. It is no longer feasible to go to all the trouble of decorating and cooking for the meetings for the attendees that have dwindled from 20 or 30 to the present day 10. Please attend the next meeting on Thursday, April 3.

LEFT PHOTO: Dorothy Schroeder manned the do vhyry ticket handouts, along with help from her friend and guest Lillian Honza. They also saw that each member and guest received a program and that each member received a souvenir: a Christmas Nutcracker butter knife. And, we want to take this opportunity to thank all the unsung heroes who stepped up to help make this year’s party such a great success! CENTER PHOTO: Our annual Christmas musicians serenaded us with Czech songs and Christmas carols and, as usual, the music was

enjoyed by all! We always appreciate these gentlemen for their festive background music—thanks Adolph Provazek, Laddie Gajdica, and Johnny Divin. RIGHT PHOTO: Vice President Jerrie Becan called out the door prizes and the bingo numbers, and President Deanna Houpy had help from several members delivering door and bingo prizes to all the lucky number winners. The next meeting will be Thursday, April 3 when we will vote on the future of Dallas Krouzek, so stay tuned for further news on the subject.

Lodge 191, Lufkin plans Feb. 21 Mardi Gras dance

What a January dance we had! If you missed it, you missed a good time with lots of Cajun music. Linda Kay and the Kool Kats did an outstanding job. There was a big crowd, and a lot of people were still there when the dance was over. Even after it was over, the band played one more song. Everyone seemed to enjoy the band, fellowship, and food. We have a 50-50 drawing and give back, to the lucky person, half of what we sell the tickets for. The total amount of the ticket sales was $174 so that means our winner won $87. So, congratulations goes out to Carolyn Hayden for winning the money. Free tickets to any dance but New Year’s, were won by Pat Vanover and Mike Zivich. We wish to thank everyone who brought food; it was wonderful. Also, our thanks to Ruth Welch, Kathy Riley, and Lois St. John for all of the decorations. Everything looks better when candles are glowing. Dues for this year must be paid by March 31 to remain on the active membership list. Regular member dues are $12, and social member dues are $15. Please send your dues to SPJST, PO Box 3113, Lufkin, Texas 75903 or they can be paid at the dances.

Mardi Gras Dance—February 21 Since Valentine’s Day will be over by the time we have our next dance, which will be February 21, we decided to have a Mardi Gras theme. So put on your colorful beads, and dance to the music of Glenn Lenderman and friends. The dance is always the third Friday night of the month at the SPJST Lodge, 197 Hughes Road in Lufkin. The time is 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. The cost is $6 for members and $7 for guests. We always have to eat so bring

Wednesday, February 12, 2014

your favorite finger food for the food table. The lodge meetings are always the Monday before the third Friday night dance. We need your support to keep this lodge running and the meetings usually last about an hour and start at 7 p.m. Also, we need hosts for the dances. If you are a member or a nonmember, you can host a dance. There is a board in the lodge with a space for you to write your name for the month you would like to host. It takes four people to do this. So if one person signs up, maybe three more will, too.

Valentine’s Day Dance— February 14 The next dance for the LDC (Lufkin Dance Club) will be February 14 which will be Valentine’s Day. The band will be Linda Kay and the Country Gentlemen. We wish all of you a Happy Valentine’s Day with lots of chocolate candy! Pat Scogin, Secretary —SPJST—

Expression of Sympathy

We the members of SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the family of WALTER STAVENA. Walter Louis Stavena, 94, of Wharton, passed away Sunday, February 2, 2014, following a short illness at a Sugar Land hospital. He was born September 4, 1919, in Fayetteville to parents Frank and Mary Novosad Stavena. Walter was reared in the Wharton area and graduated from Wharton High School. He served our country during World War II in the United States Army Air Corps. Walter married Nelga Janus on February 20, 1946. He started a rosary ministry at Wharton Nursing and Rehab, saying rosary every Tuesday. He and Nelga enjoyed dancing and music, belonging to several dance clubs, playing 42, hunting, and being with family. Walter was a 75-year member of SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton in 2013. His parents, sons Chris Shawn and Darryl Janus Stavena, sister Mary Ann Stavena, and brother Lambert Stavena all preceded Walter in death. He is survived by son Ronald Stavena and wife Honey of Wharton; daughter Dee Ann Viktorin and husband Larry of Wharton; grandchildren Brooke Merta and husband Derek of Bryan, Christie Viktorin of College Station, and Jason Stavena of San Marcos; and great-grandchild Anna Jean Merta. District Two sets youth development workshop

Dear Members, Please join District Two youth for an exciting afternoon/evening on Saturday, February 15, 2014. The afternoon will begin at 1:30 p.m. for the first-ever District Two Youth Development Workshop, located at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. We will begin with a few ice breakers to get everyone motivated and ready for action. Three interesting topics will be discussed, and you won’t want to miss out! State Youth Director Lynette Talasek will discuss duties of officers and committees and share suggestions on how to make the youth meeting more interesting. Melanie Zavodny, our SPJST Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication, will talk about the importance of Youth Achievement Day (YAD) talent. She will offer some great tips on speaking and finding the right talent act for YAD. Two of last year’s YAD photography judges—Dave Hansen from Temple College and Scott Woodall—will share ideas on picturetaking. Bring any questions you may have in any of these three categories, and I am sure these fine professionals will be happy to help you. Pizza and drinks will be served to those attending the workshop before heading on to the next activity: skating at Wheels Family Skate Center. Skating time is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Many commented on how much they missed the skating party last year. It is back this year, and we hope you will attend.

Of course, your friends are invited and will also participate in the workshop. And yes, parents, we’d love to have you join us, also. You may pick up on some super tips. If you have any questions about YAD or the youth program, bring them with you and we’ll discuss them. We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, February 15 at 1:30 p.m. for a fantastic day! New business included the District Three LockIn that will be held on Saturday, February 8 at Lodge 25, Ennis. Each lodge was asked to bring a craft/game

—SPJST—

Dear Bibbie, The chateau Lednice is in South Moravia in the settlement of Lednice on the right bank of the river Dyje. T h e chateau, with a large yard, belongs to the most beautiful chateau complexes in the Czech Republic. Lichtens t e i n s gained Appolo Pavilion Lednice’s manor in 1249 and it belonged to them almost 700 years. The settlement Lednice remains yet in document of Olomouc’s bishop s i n c e 1222. At that time, the settlement belonged to local governors who built a stronghold here. The stronghold should guard a pass-over Chateau Lednice river Dyje

on a way connecting the north with the south. A Renaissance Castel in style of Italian villas was built here in the16th century. Lednice became the Lichtensteins’ kin property in 1601, and the chateau was a summer settlement of the kin. The owner was Karel I. from Lichtenstein. His son Karel Eusebius f r o m Lichtenstein inherited the Minaret property after Karel. He went in all his life for large adjustments of Lednice-Valtice’s manor. He also built an orange-house, ancestor of today’s famous Lednice’s glass house. Karel Eusebius tried to occupy any significant artists to the Lednice’s manor. So arose the large complex of the chateau with a riding house, any domestic buildings and with a big garden. Karel’s son Jan Adam I. from Lichtenstein owned Lednice until 1712; in that time the chateau was rebuilt in Baroque style. T h e Dyje riverbed re-laid and the park reformed by 1 8 0 5 . Some Romantic buildings a s Minarette, Three Graces manmade ruin of John’s castle, Apollo’s temple, Three Gracias, Boarder’s chateau and Pond’s chateau were built in the park.

Castle Garden

A pond, with 16 islands piled up, in front of the chateau at the beginning of the 19th century, was hollowed. Since 1836, Lednice belonged to Alois II., who was imperial delegate on coronation of British Queen Victoria. Under his government, the 92 m long, 13 m wide and 10 m high glass-house with cast-iron construction was built, in which the most rare Czech glasshouse plant i.e. 300 to 500 years old tree cycas grows until this time. Last large chateau re-building was made in 1846 to 1858. The chateau so gained the beautiful Neo-Gothic Romantic style shape. Magnificent is also interior decoration. One of the most interesting rooms of the chateau is entrance hall with any cut-out wooden stairs and a giant brass chandelier. In the chateau are cut-out cassette ceilings and panel walls, original historical furniture, and notable pictures. The visitor tree of life relief from elephant bone, a hunting saloon, a Chinese cabinet with hand painted wall papers, a dining-room with tinny dishes and a library with a wooden rounded stairs from a 1 treestem piece made. A flower saloon adjusted Lichtensteins for sundry occasions or changed into a manor theater. There played also significant actors from near Vienna. František Josef II was the last Lichtenstein’s owner of Lednice. Since 1945, is Lednice in ownership of state CR. The chateau Lednice administrates National Monument Institute and was 1996 registered into list of World and Culture Heritage of UNESCO. Fraternally, Ivo —SPJST—

Attendees began arriving around 7:30 a.m., eager to visit with society friends and to partake of the kolaches, juice, and coffee that they knew would be waiting. The meeting was called to order by President Charlene Hurta. Chaplain Reverend John Gantt gave the opening prayer and led in the Pledge of Allegiance. Following the opening ceremony, President Hurta presented the President’s Award for the year. This award goes to the person or persons who have worked above and beyond expectations to assist Charlene with various endeavors during the preceding year. This year’s award had two winners: Merlene Bravenec, for her relentless, almost non-stop work on our new publication, Early Czech Schools, and to Allen Martinets, who has been organizing and maintaining the books in the TCGS Library and helping with the loading and unloading of the many, many cartons of books for transportation to our various events. The Member of the Year Award went to four hard-working members of the society who were instrumental in the planning, construction, and completion of the Pioneer Room at our Temple headquarters. The recipients were Monica Havelka, Ann Hyzak, Bob Kovar, and Edwin Hlavaty. Thadious Polasek was the first speaker of the day. He is a fifth generation Texas Czech, born in Moravia, Texas. He holds a bachelor of arts degree in Czech, with a minor in English and Russian from the University of Texas at Austin. He also has a master’s degree in library science from the University of Southern Mississippi and is currently enrolled, via distance learning, at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. Mr. Polasek’s topic, “Early Life in Moravia, Texas,” included stories and many points that the audience could relate to. It is almost certain that all the early immigrants faced the same obstacles as those who settled in Moravia faced. He explained the hardships that they endured. Their inability to speak English was a huge detriment during their early years in

Of utmost interest was the newest publication of the Texas Czech Genealogical Society, Early Czech Schools, a two-volume set containing over 600 pages with 2,900 surnames, fully indexed, offering information on a large number of Czech Schools in Texas from the 1800s through the mid-1900s. This publication will prove to be invaluable for Czech research, as are the rest of the books that are published by TCGS: Czech Family Histories, I, II, III, and IV, Czechs in Uniform I, II and III, Vsetin, Its Fight for Freedom, Czechoslovakian Legionnaires 1914-1920, Czech Pioneers, and Welcome to Hovezi. Please contact Bill Hodon for information on books by email at czbill@sbcglobal.net. After the break, Thadious Polasek returned to the podium for a talk on “Moravian Lasske Dialect.” The last speaker of the day was our president, Charlene Hurta. She gave an overview of the goals and activities of TCGS for 2014, urging every member to consider how he or she could help in achieving those goals and making the organization a better, stronger one with the work shared by a larger number of members. Among the activities coming up in 2014 is a Veterans’ event in Hallettsville on April 6 and our very first TCGS event in Temple, Texas, on June 6, which will be a genealogy research day. Revive the art of letter-writing

Getting a handwritten letter nowadays is extraordinary, as people often do not take the time to write letters in an age when emailing, texting and tweeting have revolutionized the way people communicate with one another. However, writing notes, letters and exclamations of love can be more intimate, especially on Valentine’s Day. In France, love letters are called billet doux. The French are known to be romantics at heart, but that doesn't mean people from all over the globe can't put pen to paper to express their feelings. Handwritten letters are often seen as thoughtful gestures, especially when those letters are expressing intimate sentiment. Here are some guidelines for writing a love note or letter.

• Visit a stationery store and find a nice piece of stationery and envelope to use for the letter. If you are putting forth the effort to create a beautiful, handwritten letter, you can add to the experience by selecting a fine paper on which to write. There are many different types of paper, including some that are embossed. Some may even feature flower petals or leaves embedded in the paper.

• Brush up on your penmanship. A letter will be rendered useless if it isn't legible. Therefore, practice penmanship before sitting down to write your letter. • Have a picture of the person to whom you will be addressing the letter nearby. This may provide some inspiration.

• Jot down ideas on a piece of scrap paper. Think about how your romantic partner makes you feel and the qualities he or she possesses that you find appealing, and use concrete examples why you love and care for this person. • Write a rough draft of the letter and be sure to proofread it for misspellings and grammatical errors.

• Always write from the heart and be sincere in what you say. Try to call out specific examples that recall particularly fond memories.

• Write your final copy of the letter on the good paper. Make sure it is neat and legible. Be sure you date it because it is likely the note will be saved.

Love letters and other handwritten notes are quickly becoming a thing of the past, as technology has largely replaced pen and paper. Yet, those who want to add a special touch to any occasion can choose to write a letter and make a lasting impression. (MS) —SPJST—

Expressions of Gratitude

“Homey” Environment

“Some brief reflections of our life at S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living Community”

The facility has a “homey” environment, yet it is decorated with class. We like it for my mother because we are confidant she is in a secure and safe place. She gets three nourishing meals per day, gets her medication given at the right times, has her housekeeping taken care of weekly, can go to church, beauty shop, and exercise right there in the facility. There are so many activities for our mom in the facility as well as out and about taking the “SPJST Bus” for outings. Sometimes she must pick and choose because there is more to do than time allows. From the director to receptionist, volunteers, cooking staff, nurse, maintenance, and housekeepers, etc. everyone is so friendly and gets to know each resident by name. The thing we like most though is that the family is encouraged to participate in activities and enjoy meals with your family member. It is great, too, that my sister from out of town is allowed to spend the night when she comes for a visit. We especially like the common areas we can reserve when many of us visit at the same time. If you are looking for a place for a loved one where you don’t have to worry about them, the S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living in Taylor is the place you are looking for. —Charlotte S. Albert of Thrall, Texas (Daughter of resident Arlene Schneider)

Friendly Neighbors and Good Friends

I can recommend S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living as a good place to live for several good reasons. You have your own apartment, furnished with your own things. There are personal assistants to assist you with what you need. The staff will assist you with medication, if needed. We have tasty and healthy full meals— three a day. We have our choice of games and crafts, also a variety of entertainment and church activities. Our neighbors are friendly, and we make good friends. —Abby Johnson, Resident

Many Advantages 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Small table dining. My two-room single person suite with bath. Furnishings and pictures from home. Plenty of plugs for sound system. The cleaning of apartments plus complimentary laundry. 6. Medicines managed. I do not have to schedule my own. 7. Meals are delicious. I have to guard against overeating.

These are just a few of the advantages . . . there are many more! —J. Noble Atkins, Resident

Beautiful Place and the Staff is Great

My name is Ruby Rakes. My husband Clarence and I have been married for 63 years. We came to S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living in March 2012. We moved here from Dumas, Texas, a small town north of Amarillo in the Panhandle. Our reason for moving here is that our daughter and her husband live here in Taylor, and we needed to be near them. We also have some of our grandchildren and great-grandchildren that are in the area, too. We feel fortunate to be living in such a beautiful place. The staff is great, and they are very helpful in making everything pleasant. We find the staff and residents friendly and always willing to help. We enjoy the church services, musical entertainment, and bingo. There is always some kind of entertainment we can choose to attend. We would recommend S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living to anyone. —Clarence and Ruby Rakes, Residents

Attentive Care; Close-Knit, Family-Oriented

I can’t say enough about what a blessing it is for my father to live at S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living in Taylor. The staff is caring, dedicated, reliable, and professional. They take a personal interest in each of the residents and make everyone feel welcome. They offer physical fitness and social activities that are so important in maintaining the well-being of the residents. It has been my experience and observation that the staff provides the attentive care that enables my father to “feel at home.” It gives my family and I great peace of mind knowing that he is safe, happy, and well-cared for in a close-knit family-oriented community. —Theresa Hajda (Daughter of resident V.J. Hajda)

Lots of Entertainment and Fun

I moved to Taylor when my son and his wife found this place this wonderful place. Everyone here is so friendly and nice. Staff, employees, and residents are so willing and able to help in so many ways. There are so many fun things to do here. Today, we visited the Blanton Museum of Art down at the University of Texas. It was wonderful. There is always something to do, exercise everyday in the week, and very well-attended. Lots of entertainment, bus trips, and more fun! I have used the exercise since I arrived, and it has certainly helped me physically. We have games, arts and crafts, painting, and more. —Ann Geil, Resident
