Vice President McBride was elected to serve a fouryear term at the 2012 SPJST Convention. “I want to apologize to the convention delegates for not completing the term that I was elected for,” Brother McBride shared with the Vestnik last week. “However, under the circumstances, I felt that it was best to leave my position as Supreme Lodge Vice President.” He stated that he did have several plans for the next two years, but he wishes much success to the next Vice President. The Supreme Lodge will meet in late February to discuss filling Brother McBride’s unexpired term that ends on July 31, 2016. Pet Parade Coming Soon!

The Publication Committee met

at the Home Office on Saturday, January 11. It’s always great to meet with these dedicated district representatives to share the past year in the Vestnik/Communication Department. The Committee recommended four items to the Supreme Lodge. These include:

1. At the request of the Insurance Department, we recommend that an Insurance, Annuity, and Mortgage Lending Extra be published in lieu of a Vestnik in the first quarter of 2014 and be mailed to all member households. 2. Due to member interest, we recommend that the SPJST Member Services Directory be published in lieu of a regular Vestnik in 2014. 3. Due to readers’ suggestions, we recommend that the Vestnik include a special “pet parade” in an issue(s) featuring SPJST members and their pets.

4. We recommend that a Vestnik reading room be established in a suitable location in the basement of the Home Office for archiving past Vestniks that preserve SPJST’s history and be available for online access.

Recommendations No. 1, 2 and 3 were approved by the Supreme Lodge. For Recommendation No. 4, the Supreme Lodge approved to set up a committee to determine the future uses of the basement space with the intent of approving Recommendation No. 4 and to honor existing commitment of establishing best use of Home Office building space. The committee consists of President Vanicek, District Two Director Pospisil,

District Three Director Krizan, District Six Director Kaspar, and your Vestnik Editor. We will announce very soon the date that the Insurance, Annuity, and Mortgage Lending Extra will be published. And, we will start collecting business cards for the Member Services Directory soon. Over the years, we have had several requests to include a “pet parade” in the Vestnik. So, members, get ready! Coming soon will be a special pet feature inside the Vestnik featuring photos of members and their pets. Watch for more information on how you can participate!

Thanks, Districts Three and Four Youth! David and I had the pleasure of attending youth development workshops in Districts Three and Four. District Three was held on February 8 at Lodge 25, Ennis, and District Four was held on February 9 at Lodge 49, Rowena. My compliments to the youth and parents at each of these workshops. The youth were polite, paid attention, and were interested in the topics being discussed. Thanks to Assistant District Three Youth Counselor Lynda Novak and District Four Youth Counselor Beverly Teplicek for asking me to present information at these events. I had a wonderful time! Correction Last week’s Vestnik included a photo on page one of Jeanette Bender with youth club members from Lodge 81, Needville. We incorrectly stated that Jeanette was a youth leader at Lodge 88. Instead, she served as a youth leader at Lodge 4, Hallettsville. —SPJST—

Lodge 18, Elgin member seeks ASCAP input

Dear Members, Our lodge is facing some challenges from ASCAP and BMI. Our lodge is classified by these organizations as a restaurant/bar that plays live music and juke box music. These organizations are billing us for more than what we make off the dances in a year.

If your lodge is also being faced with these same challenges and you are concerned, please give me a call at (512) 281-3207 or send a note to SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin, PO Box 55, Elgin, Texas 78621 - Attention Irene. We need to work together to see if there is anything that we can do. Your thoughts, suggestions, and correspondence will be appreciated. Please call or write. Fraternally, Irene Vrabel

Editor’s Note: What is ASCAP? According to Wikipedia, ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) is an American not-for-profit performance-rights organization (PRO) that protects its members’ musical copyrights by monitoring public performances of their music, whether via a broadcast or live performance, and compensating them accordingly. ASCAP collects licensing fees from users of music created by ASCAP members, then distributes them back to its members as royalties. In effect, the arrangement is the product of a compromise: when a song is played, the user does not have to pay the copyright holder directly, nor does the music creator have to bill a radio station for use of a song.

Wednesday, February 19, 2014

In 2012, ASCAP collected over $941 million in licensing fees and distributed $828.7 million in royalties to its members, with an 11.6 percent operating expense ratio. As of July 2013, ASCAP membership included over 460,000 songwriters, composers, and music publishers.

What is BMI? According to Wikipedia, Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) is one of three United States performing rights organizations, along with ASCAP and SESAC. It collects license fees on behalf of songwriters, composers, and music publishers and distributes them as royalties to those members whose works have been performed. In FY 2013, BMI collected more than $944 million in licensing fees and distributed $814 million in royalties. —SPJST—

Fifty-year membership pins were presented to Linda Wilde and Wilbert Mikeska by Lodge 24, Cyclone President Daniel Wilde, center, at the February 10, 2014, lodge meeting. Linda Wilde received her 50-year pin, and Wilbert Mikeska received his 75-year pin. The honorees stated, “How proud we both are to be so honored!”

There is the saying of “It seems like time just flies by.” Well, for me, that is always true. It seems like just yesterday that my parents signed me up as a member of SPJST, and I became a member of the youth club—dancing the beseda. Well, here it is 50 years later, and I can look back on the time that I was among the royalty court at an SPJST District Two youth event. Later, I was a part of the Seaton Choral Club singing those good Czech songs. Then, I was an officer of Lodge 24, Cyclone. I was lucky and got to attend a lot of functions at SPJST halls across the state, being the daughter of Anton Vrazel and getting to travel with Vrazels’ Polka Band to a lot of dances throughout the years. Where has the time gone? Wow . . . 50 years as a member of SPJST. It seems like just yesterday! Mr. Mikeska said he did not actually remember becoming a member of SPJST as his parents signed him up when he was about three years old, but

he looks back on a lifetime of events surrounding SPJST’s rich heritage and feels like Flag Hall is home to him. He remembers growing up and the changes the lodge and the organization have gone through in his lifetime. How things have changed . . . yet stayed the same. It is an organization where we are all brothers and sisters and work together for a common good. When I told Mr. Mikeska that I can look forward to the day when I get my 75-year pin and can be in his shoes, he just laughed and reminded me I had 25 more years to catch up with him! Thank you to Wilbert’s lovely wife, Margaret (who also makes the best hamburgers in Cyclone) for bringing the pins for the presentation and helping President Wilde with the presentation. (Margaret took the picture.) We are both “as proud as we can be!” Linda M. Wilde, Treasurer —SPJST—

Step Up to the Plate!

“Enhanced Premium Refunds” Cornerstone of the 2014 Membership Program

Traditionally, one of the most important financial benefits that the SPJST Supreme Lodge has extended to local lodges is the annual Premium Refund Program. The purpose of this program has been to help SPJST lodges keep their operations on a sound financial basis. In recent years, the formula for calculating the premium refund for each lodge has been: • $1.00 for each paid-up certificate; and • $8.50 for each premium-paying certificate

In addition to providing this premium refund, the Supreme Lodge has periodically approved other financial incentives for lodges, the most significant of which is the Society’s annual “Membership Program” incentives. Since the program’s inception in 1993, the formula for rewarding lodge incentives for their participation in the Membership Program has varied greatly. Most recently, the 2013 program provided lodges an incentive of $25 per certificate issued. An additional $15 is scheduled to be paid to the lodge after 25 months if the certificate remains in force. Under the guidelines of the 2013 program, it was also necessary for the lodge to meet a specified number of fraternal acts and reporting requirements to receive this incentive. Babe Ruth is often referred to as the greatest baseball player who ever lived. In 22 seasons, Babe Ruth hit a record 714 home runs. Many of Babe Ruth's numerous records for both pitching and hitting lasted for decades.

Step Up to the Plate! Lodge Incentive Guidelines

Beginning in 2014, the scope of SPJST’s longstanding Premium Refund Program will be expanded to incorporate the Membership Program incentives, dramatically simplifying the program and compensating lodges on the basis of the premium income generated by the lodge. The formula for calculating the Enhanced Premium Refund is: 1. $1.00 for each paid-up certificate; and 2. 2.80 percent of the lodge’s annual earned premium.

To receive the Enhanced Premium Refund, lodges must meet the following three-point criteria:

1. HOLD REGULAR LODGE MEETINGS IN ACCORDANCE WITH ARTICLE 50 OF THE SPJST BY-LAWS AND OFFER A WELL-ROUNDED FRATERNAL PROGRAM Every lodge is required to hold regular meetings to discuss lodge business with their members. Service to each other — as fellow SPJST members — and service to the community that we serve is an important part of the SPJST mission. Rather than mandating a specific number of fraternal activities that your lodge must accomplish in a given year in order to remain in good standing and qualify for incentives, the greater focus is on lodges working to host a healthy mix of “quality” events that bring value to SPJST’s community presence.

2. RETURN ALL REQUESTED PAPERWORK ON TIME BY THE DUE DATE Every lodge is required to send in all requested paperwork that is needed from the lodge. This includes 990; 990-T’s; and fraternal activity summaries.

3. SUBMIT REGULAR LETTERS/PHOTOS TO THE VESTNIK Every lodge is required to routinely submit news of upcoming events, lodge meetings, and/or meeting/event summaries and/or photographs to the Vestnik. Of course, the lodge may contribute to the Vestnik more frequently than once a month. Unless otherwise noted in the Vestnik, the deadline for submitting items for publication is at 5 p.m. on the Wednesday preceding the publication date of the next issue. For more information, please contact Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny.

Enhanced Premium Refund will be withheld from a lodge deemed to be “non-compliant.” Enhanced Premium Refunds will be retained in escrow for a non-compliant lodge for a period not to exceed two years. Upon regaining compliant status, lodge will receive its Enhanced Premium Refund.

The new Enhanced Premium Refund formula enables lodges to benefit in direct proportion to the amount of earned premium that is generated by the lodge. As such, there will be no maximum amount that any lodge can receive. Lodges that have over the years consistently enrolled solid, premium-paying business can expect to see an immediate increase in the amount of Enhanced Premium Refund that its lodge receives at the SPJST Awards Banquet in January 2015.

Gold Star Lodge In addition to receiving an Enhanced Premium Refund, qualifying lodges that generate at least $10,000 in earned premium — excluding dumpins and 1035 exchanges — on new business issued in 2014 will receive

VӖSTNÍK

designation as an SPJST Gold Star Lodge and recognition at the 2015 SPJST Awards Banquet.

The Supreme Lodge reserves the right to periodically revisit the terms and incentives provided in the 2014 “Step Up to the Plate!” Membership Program, making such adjustments and/or enhancements as necessary to ensure the success of the program and its participants. Additional Guidelines for New Lodges and Lodges in Existence Fewer Than 5 Years

For a newly chartered lodge, the lodge incentive award will be prorated from the date of the lodge’s organizational meeting. The lodge must also meet fraternal reporting requirements.

During the first five years of its existence, any lodge that receives an award greater than $2,000, the excess amount will be deposited into the SPJST Lodge Management Fund. The lodge can access the funds at any time with two lodge officers’ signatures, subject to the approval of the Supreme Lodge President and Supreme Lodge Vice President.

Step Up to the Plate!

Member Referral Incentive Guidelines

When it comes to getting new members, there's no substitute for referrals. When an SPJST member refers a friend or family member for membership in SPJST, he or she is helping to build a stronger and more active lodge. It also qualifies you to participate in the monthly referral card drawing contest.

All referral cards received during a given month will go into a drawing for three $25 Wal-Mart gift cards. The referrer also benefits by helping to build a stronger and more active local lodge.

All referral cards received during the year will go into a drawing for five $100 Wal-Mart gift cards to be awarded at the 2015 SPJST Awards Banquet.

Referral cards are available from the SPJST Home Office and online at www.spjst.org.

Please help us to ensure that the leads that you pass on are quality leads. We would not want any sales agent to devote precious time calling on unqualified leads. A good referral is someone who an SPJST member has spoken with about membership and/or life insurance in SPJST and who has expressed an interest in joining. In visiting with your prospective lead, make sure that he or she knows that an SPJST Sales Agent will contact him or her.

Cooperative Advertising Program for Associate Agents and Career Agents

SPJST provides a Cooperative Advertising Program for its Associate Agents and Career Agents who qualify. The program offers a cost-sharing arrangement between the SPJST Insurance Department and sales agents where SPJST pays for part of your radio, television, or print advertising. As your advertising partner, SPJST will reimburse up to 50 percent of your approved advertising, up to a maximum amount of $500 per year. The SPJST Cooperative Advertising Form is available online and through the SPJST Home Office.

Each cooperative advertising request will be subject to review and approval by the SPJST Insurance Department. To qualify, both Career and Associate Agents must have at least an 85 percent persistency over the preceding 12 months.

Annual Incentives

At the end of the year, the Top 5 SPJST Sales Agents — Associate Agents and Career Agents — will be recognized in two categories: Certificates Issued and Amount of Earned Premium

The top producing agent in each category will receive $1,500 and recognition in the Vestnik. The second through fifth ranked producers will each receive $500 and recognition in the Vestnik. To qualify, the agent must have at least an 85 percent persistency over the preceding 25 months. Annuities and dump-ins excluded.

Million Dollar Producers

SPJST Sales Agents who present themselves as fraternal life insurance professionals and stay abreast of changes in the industry are agents who generate business and become million dollar producers. It’s a plateau that is worthy of notice and one that pays incentives to those agents who make the grade.

For 2014, SPJST Sales Agents who achieve $1 million of life insurance issued between January 1 and December 26, 2014, and who maintain at least 85 percent persistency over the preceding 25 months will receive incentives as follows:

They supported the Czech organizations and were very active in planning and working on various committees for the Czech picnics at Comanche Park held each summer. Younger members still talk about the great times they shared at those picnics. SPJST played an important role in his life. Coming from the small communities of Granger and Taylor, he recognized the importance of fraternal organizations. He revitalized the San Antonio lodge by encouraging members to attend lodge meetings and activities. He served SPJST Lodge 133 as secretary and president for many years. He also represented District Seven on the SPJST Publication Committee from 1976 to 1984. Family and friends gathered at Dellcrest Funeral Home on January 2, 2014, to celebrate Emil’s life and share their memories. The funeral Mass was celebrated on January 3 at St. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Granger, Texas, with interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. Emil received military honors with bagpipes played by the New Braunfels Fire Department and “Taps” with a 12-gun salute provided by the VFW. Though he has left us, his spirit will always be with us. It is our job to follow his example and be committed to serving others. Resolution Committee Vicki Reese Jarolyn Popp Kelsey Trinidad —SPJST—

District Four reports on Youth Development Workshop

Dobry den! And what a good day we had at our first ever District Four workshop! We had 18 young people and 14 adults in attendance! Great! Melanie Zavodny and husband David were with us, along with our District Four Director Billy Rollwitz. We had great representation by our district representatives—President Laura Pospichal, Vice President Sylvia Rollwitz, Secretary Becky Wood, Treasurer Brad Teplicek, Flag Bearers

Tanner Wood and Jordan Taylor, Queen Ana Fuentes, and Duchess Grace Schwertner. Tanner Wood, District Four Flag Bearer, and Morgann Wood presented the colors at 2 p.m. with the pledges followed by a moment of silence for our sick and departed members and friends along with the people serving our country. Sutton Schwertner, Hunter Teplicek, and Brandon Teplicek presented a program on respect to our flag and the proper way to fold the flag. They did an excellent job! Kaycee Lehman and Morgann Wood conducted a program on parliamentary procedure. They handed out some information to help the younger members understand the correct pro-

Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club Decorates Valentines

After the February youth club meeting, Lodge 29, Taylor youth decorated 120 valentine cards to distribute to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1, Taylor

cedures. They did do their homework! As candy is the main food for Youth Achievement Day this year, Brandon Teplicek and Cammi Teplicek did a demonstration on making some candy. They used the safety rules for cooking on top of a range and described what they were doing as they worked. Everyone got to taste the finished product. Very good! Ana Fuentes and Kaitlyn Taylor went over all of the youth club officers and explained their duties. With the election of officers coming up soon, this was a very informative presentation. Last, but not least, Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny presented a power point program on communication. She gave some great ideas to everyone for getting their letters to the Vestnik and also reminded the youth they could send in poems and/or short stories they have written. As DYC, I could not have been more proud of all of our district youth—the ones presenting the various programs and the ones in attendance! What a great group of young people! I want to thank all of the parents for allowing their children to participate in the SPJST Youth Program. Thank you also to our youth for presenting the various programs. Fantastic job by each of you! Afterwards, a sandwich lunch was served, and a lot of fraternalism was shown. Everyone was reminded of the District Four Spring Meeting to be held in Rowena on April 5, hosted by Lodge 215, South Plains. We adjourned at 4 p.m. with everyone leaving with some new knowledge and a full stomach! I am looking forward to working with the youth clubs in our district for

another year. I do believe we have a brighter future as these young people grow and become our leaders of tomorrow! Beverly Teplicek District Four Youth Counselor —SPJST—

Czech Night Out - Oh, What a Night!

Tuesday, January 14, 2014 • Caldwell, Texas • Submitted by Katherine Morris

Good Czech music, good Czech food, and good Czech people comprised Texas Czech Genealogical Society’s Czech Night Out on Tuesday, January 14, 2014, at Caldwell Civic/Visitor Center in Caldwell, Texas, for Moravská Jedenáctka. Moravská Jedenáctka - The Moravian 11 - a group of outstanding, professional musicians of the Ištvánci and Stříbrňanka dechovki (traditional brass bands) from Moravia, Czech Republic - was on a nine-city tour of Texas. The group began the program with Kde Domov Muj? - the Czech national anthem. Then it charmed the audience with červená Sukynka, Muzikanti Pojď te Hrat, and many other favorites with the audience singing along as well. Also in-

cluded in the band’s program was the very familiar and frequently sung A Ja Sam. To the delight of attendees, the group performed an instrumental of the Beatles’, “Hey, Jude”, and the lead male vocalist sang Frank Sinatra’s “I Did It My Way” - all were a hit! Many thanks to the following: CEFT in partnership with the University of North Texas College of Music, which brought Moravská Jedenáctka to Texas; and Texas Czech Genealogical Society, and its marvelous volunteers who hosted the wonderful Czech Night Out of delicious food and beautiful music in Caldwell. —SPJST—

MEMBER REFERRALS

When it comes to getting new SPJST members, there’s no substitute for member referrals. When an SPJST member refers a friend or family member for membership in SPJST, he or she is helping to build a stronger and more active lodge. It also qualifies you to participate in the monthly referral card drawing contest.

MONTHLY CONTESTS! All referral cards received during a given month will go into a drawing for three $25 Wal-Mart gift cards. The individual making the referral also benefits SPJST by helping to build a stronger and more active local lodge.

QUALIFY FOR THE DRAWING AT THE 2015 BANQUET! All referral cards received during the year will go into a drawing for five $100 Wal-Mart gift cards to be awarded at the 2015 SPJST Awards Banquet.

Please help us to ensure that the leads that you pass on are quality leads. We would not want any sales agent to devote precious time to calling on unqualified leads. A good referral is someone who an SPJST member has spoken with about membership and/or life insurance in SPJST and who has expressed an interest in joining. In visiting with your prospective lead, make sure that he or she knows that an SPJST Sales Agent will call. Referral cards are available from SPJST Home Office and online at www.spjst.org.
