WANTED MEMBER REFERRALS

When it comes to getting new SPJST members, there’s no substitute for member referrals. When an SPJST member refers a friend or family member for membership in SPJST, he or she is helping to build a stronger and more active lodge. It also qualifies you to participate in the monthly referral card drawing contest.

Please help us to ensure that the leads that you pass on are quality leads. We would not want any sales agent to devote precious time to calling on unqualified leads. A good referral is someone who an SPJST member has spoken with about membership and/or life insurance in SPJST and who has expressed an interest in joining. In visiting with your prospective lead, make sure that he or she knows that an SPJST Sales Agent will call. Referral cards are available from SPJST Home Office and online at www.spjst.org.

Bingo Donations Welcome at S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2 Special thanks to Jeanette Bender of Lodge 88, Houston for sharing a

front page story that appeared in the Gulf Coast Tribune on Thursday, February 13, 2014. The article written by B.J. Pollock is titled, “Donations Welcome - Bingo highlight of SPJST residents.” The article says that most of the 58 residents at S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2, Needville love to play bingo, and there is always a need for prizes for the winners. Wilma Whatley, director of activities, points out that bingo is the residents’ favorite activity. They play at about 1 p.m. in the dining hall every day of the week except Mondays and Thursdays, with 10 winners each of those days. So the rest home goes through a lot of prizes! Whatley said each time someone bingos, an employee takes the cart full of gifts to them to choose which prize they want. Their favorites are plush animals, jewelry, toiletries, and food items, but Whately said just about any unbreakable gift item would be welcome. “They love Mardi Gras necklaces,” she said. “Playing bingo makes their day.” And, the last bingo game of the day is always black-out, for which special prizes are reserved. Anyone who has stuffed toys or any other items to donate is asked to take them to the nursing home at 8611 Main Street in Needville. For more information, or to make sure items are appropriate, call Whatley at (979) 793-4256. Donations can also be mailed to: S.P.J.S.T. 1251 from El Campo for donating their time to do this service project at Cooper Farm,” SPJST ENC Executive Director John Hoelscher said. “Their service is very much appreciated, and we look forward to a continued relationship with their troop and hopefully other groups like them.” Many members of the El Campo Boy Scouts are also SPJST members— just like Scoutmaster Tommy Drapela. All of Mr. Drapela’s sons were Boy Scouts and SPJST youth club members. In addition, Tommy’s youngest son Ryan was awarded the very prestigious Eagle Scout on February 19, 2012. SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm introduced the Benchmark program at the beginning of this year. The program is a way for individuals, families, lodges, youth clubs, businesses, etc. “to make a mark and get noticed by all who utilize our facility,” ENC Director Hoelscher

stated. “To get ‘Benchmarked,’ make a $250 donation to SPJST Education and Nature Center and let us know who or what name you would like put on the bench.” The benches will be placed throughout the Cooper Farm facility and used by guests for years to come. Thanks to the Boy Scouts, the benches are ready to be sponsored and put to use around the campground. “Quite a few benches have already been spoken for, but we still have some that are available to be sponsored.” ENC Director Hoelscher added. “Once this batch gets sold out, we will do another batch . . . so please keep those Benchmark sponsorships coming in!” For more details on the Benchmark program, please contact ENC Executive Director John Hoelscher by sending an email to spjstenc@gmail.com or calling (979) 249-5674. MUSEUM ADMINISTRATOR President Vanicek brought up the matter of providing some funding for a new museum administrator. The matter was discussed, and it was determined that President Vanicek should write a letter to the museum president, relaying expectations of the Supreme Lodge to the museum president. CALENDAR DATES President Vanicek reviewed the SPJST calendar of events for the Society.

SPJST FRATERNAL DEPARTMENT 2014 OBJECTIVES President Vanicek reviewed his goals and objectives for the SPJST Fraternal Department for 2014.

Departmental Objective 1: Integrating Unified Fraternal and Sales Objectives in All Organizational Initiatives. Develop an integrated approach to SPJST marketing and fraternal activities. Great marketing involves the deep understanding of people’s needs and the development of need satisfying products and services. This is what the Society seeks to achieve when we advance the broad themes of community service, cultural enrichment, and social interaction as central to our mission.

This initiative includes the development of a compact SPJST audio-visual display for lodge events, festivals, and other relevant high-traffic activities and working with the news media to build a greater awareness of SPJST efforts in our local communities, including the placement of SPJST and/or lodge articles and/or photos in local newspapers. Our challenge in 2014 — and beyond — is to build on SPJST’s good name a fraternal benefit society that cares about its members and the communities that we serve.

Departmental Objective 2: Advancing the Objectives of the SPJST Model Lodge Best Practices Guide. Working one-on-one with lodges or small groups of lodges to ensure that lodge officers have the education, training, and support they need to lead their lodge. Efforts are currently underway to develop a second-generation Model Lodge Best Practices Guide. The guide will be issued to lodge presidents and FACs.

In conveying the 10 model lodge objectives, key emphasis will be placed on objective one which conveys the importance of identifying and conveying the mission of the local lodge and establishing an annual calendar of events that will help to guide the lodge in supporting its mission. Departmental Objective 3: Build Upon Success of Join Hands Day Program. We will be presenting and promoting the attributes of Join Hands Day as a way to bring young and old members together with other organizations to make a positive difference in our respective communities. It’s about extending our lodges into the community.

In line with Departmental Objective One, this initiative includes working to build a greater awareness of SPJST lodge Join Hands Day efforts in our local communities with the submission and placement of SPJST and/or lodge articles and/or photos in local newspapers.

Departmental Objective 4: Build Upon Success of SPJST Scholarship Program. We will be working to promote and develop the SPJST Scholarship Program and as well as recognizing the academic excellence of our scholarship recipients. This will include placing articles about the program and its recipients in local newspapers.

Wednesday, February 26, 2014

Departmental Objective 5: Build Upon Success of SPJST Youth Program. Working through the district youth counselors and youth leaders to clearly understand the objectives of the SPJST Youth Program and to convey these objectives through words and actions throughout their respective districts. Moving forward, the emphasis is making sure the youth have a firm grasp on why SPJST exists as a fraternal organization and how their local youth club and active involvement helps to support the Society and the goals that it seeks to achieve. Based on the success of the response to the SPJST State Royalty Golden Jubilee in 2013, we will also be seeking to involve more former youth club members into the mainstream of SPJST involvement. Departmental Objective 6: Enhance Workplace Morale. Education and performance team-building activities can establish a stronger bond between coworkers who might blame one another when problems arise within shared business projects. This bond can help in increasing collaboration among employees during daily business activities. With that thought in mind, we are looking at implementing an SPJST Team Building Field Day in 2014 and hosting the activity at Temple Lions Park.

Departmental Objective 7: Maintain and Develop SPJST’s Presence at Regional and Statewide Czech Events That Seek to Promote Czech Heritage and Culture. One of the provisions of the SPJST Vision Statement is that we are “to encourage cherished Czech traditions.” Through active participation in Czech heritage and cultural events, we help to define the cultural identity of SPJST and its founding fathers. By active participation in regional and statewide events, we are also helping to raise a greater awareness of SPJST and convey to others the benefits of membership in our fraternal order.

Departmental Objective 8: Advance the Mission of the SPJST Foundation. Pending 501(c)3 designation, we will be advancing the mission of the SPJST Foundation. The corporation is organized exclusively for educational, scientific and charitable purposes. A workshop for Foundation directors is tentatively scheduled for April 14. NEW INSURANCE RATES Vice President McBride reported on the necessity of developing new rates. He also reported plans that were discontinued. He explained that an increase in reserves was mandated which required an increase in premiums. NEW BUSINESS

UNDERWRITING REVIEW Kirk Gravely and Doug Brown of the actuarial firm of Allen Bailey and Associates were present.

Their first report contained a study to determine if SPJST was applying more strict underwriting criteria than other fraternal benefit societies or commercial carriers. They found that SPJST does not have more onerous requirements than the surveyed competitors. In fact, SPJST has significantly higher non-medical limits ($100,000 through age 60) than most of the competitors surveyed. As a result, they would expect a more streamlined underwriting process with a higher approval rate relative to the surveyed competitors for most SPJST applicants.

They did observe, however, that SPJST has slightly lower EKG thresholds than the fraternal competitors surveyed and significantly lower EKG thresholds than the commercial competitors surveyed. There may be an opportunity for SPJST to increase its threshold for EKG testing and add a less expensive blood test in lieu of EKG testing.

Their next report concerned if SPJST is getting a fair deal from the reinsurer. A distinction should be made between the underwriting manual developed by a reinsurance company and the rates that they charge for reinsurance. While the reinsurance rates charged by a given reinsurance company vary among the direct companies that they serve, reinsurance companies typically maintain a single underwriting manual. Reinsurance companies are under a lot of pressure to maintain competitive underwriting manuals. Recess for the day was taken at 5:30 p.m. until 8 a.m. on January 16.

Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska led the Supreme Lodge in an opening prayer for the day.

President Vanicek shared a number of ideas for connecting with our members and taking advantage of the online environment to provide enhanced customer service.

ENC SWIMMING POOL Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reported that the SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) at Cooper Farm swimming pool has developed serious problems attributed to defective construction. The pool contractor did not fully follow specifications. The ENC has employed legal assistance to seek recovery of damages and have not been successful in recovering damages. Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reported that to assist the ENC, he has forwarded the matter to independent legal counsel for a review of actions taken thus far. Report will be made as soon as the review is complete.

QUARTERLY INVESTMENTS Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reported on real estate loans and investments during the quarter. to stabilization and operational performance of assets to SPJST’s bottom line. Focused the management of assets to more like a traditional insurance company. • Reduced equity exposure to approximately 25 percent of surplus (appx $5.2MM at year end 2013; down from appx $15.8MM at year end 2012) • Enacted an “Other Than Temporarily Impaired” (OTTI) policy for fixed income holdings • Realized trading gains of $1,577,830.99 in 2013; $971,792.13 Short Term, $606,038.86 Long Term • Reduced equity Book Value deficit to -$388,179.20 at year end 2013 from $1,654,454 at year end 2012. -$1,884,484 inclusive of MFs at year end 2013 vs -$3,461,587 inclusive of MFs at year end 2012. • Added to surplus by approximately $1MM • Began the process of extending duration of the assets to be more in line with liabilities • Reduced “Risk Based Capital” ratio • Extended maturity ladder to 15 years from 10 years to increase duration parity with liabilities. Approximate maturity goal of $10MM per annum • Believe 2013 asset performance emboldens SPJST’s position for a ratings increase from AMBest

Goals for 2014 • Adopt ERM language into SPJST’s investment policy statement to establish policies to further strengthen and protect SPJST’s financial position • Equity Book Value to “0” or net positive • Continue to add to operating income from equity trading with a focus to transition to longer term equity investing as book value deficits approach $0 • Fill and extend duration and maturity ladder to 2029 so that asset duration creeps more closely to liability duration • Purchase of securities that generate spreads of at least 1.5% over SPJST’s cost of funds • BCAR score of 140 or higher to embolden a rating increase to “A-“ or higher from AMBest • Reduce total MF and equity positions to 25% of surplus or less • Purge all NAIC 3 or lower paper from asset pool • Diversify issuer ownership to 15% of surplus • Add to surplus by $1MM or more for 2014

Let’s all pray for rain. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and a prayer of silence was observed for all those who are ill or who have recently been in the hospital. Minutes were read from January’s meeting by Secretary/Reporter Darlene Hollingsworth. There were three corrections. Renee Hughes is the daughter of Rosemary and Kenneth Stafford—not Mary Ann and Daniel Roznovsky; the lodge was opened New Year’s Eve for bingo; and our meeting was moved to February 17 instead of the regular meeting time which was originally scheduled on February 10 due to inclement weather. Robert Sill made a motion to approve the minutes, and Pat Sill seconded. All approved the minutes from January as read. President Ann Pustejovsky gave the bar report. Ann stated that for January, we had 13 bingos and no rentals. For the month of January, the kitchen totaled $492. Ann gave the bingo report. Financial Secretary Kay Weeks gave the insurance report. Kay stated for January, we had one termination and one transfer. Dorothy Gerlich, mother of Kay Weeks, has transferred to Lodge 183. Welcome to our lodge!

Janie Rejcek made a motion to approve the new member, and Tom Weeks seconded. All approved. Janie Rejcek gave the FAC report. Janie stated the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund continues until March 31. The State Domino Tournament is scheduled March 1. Fraternal Alliance Of Texas scholarship applications are due March 1. Join Hands Day is May 3. Assistant Youth Leader Kay Weeks gave the youth club report in the absence of Debra Daniel. Kay stated 25 members attended the District Three Lock-in at Lodge 25, Ennis on February 8. Everyone had a great time, and Bessie made homemade food. There were lots of games played by all. The Youth Leaders Workshop is scheduled Saturday, March 22 in Temple. Walk for Wishes is Saturday, March 29 at Reverchon Park in Dallas. Please plan on walking in honor of Katelyn Daniel, member of Lodge 183. The youth club is planning to go to the Ronald McDonald House on May 3 for their Join Hands Day. Trustee report—Pat Sill will get bids for repairing the front door. Under old business, President Ann stated the SPJST Awards Banquet was nice, and Lodge 183 was awarded the gold award for 25 new certificates and a check for $1,050 for a great job! Our youth club received an award for Top Youth Club of District Three, and the speaker was awesome! Ann stated a belated “Happy Valentine’s Day” to everyone! Ann stated we passed our fire inspection test for the lodge by the fire marshall. Under new business, Ann Pustejovsky stated we will need judges for the youth club chili cook-off and membership drive. This agenda is tabled for next month’s meeting. The

Fort Worth Friendship Club

The meeting of the Friendship Club was called to order by President Sharron Connelly on Wednesday, February 5, 2014, at St. Thomas Parish Dining Room. Everyone was welcomed. President Sharron asked Lydia Alholm to lead all in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Our guest was Ann Marie Carminati, friend of Anna Marie Moncrief. Mary Ann Krivanek took the minutes from the last meeting, but due to her absence, there were no minutes to be read. Treasurer Jo Ann Wilcox gave the financial report which was accepted as presented. Sharron thanked last month’s hostesses—Mary Ann Krivanek, Lola Taylor, and Libbie Vrla. We don’t have hostesses anymore. As Sharron said last month, we would do things differently, and she looked into her “magic” hat and found my name so I was designated as Queen for the day. I got to wear the white

cape with gold trim, crown, and hold the scepter which made me feel real “royal.” Then I was asked how I came to join the Friendship Club. For those of you that may not know, the late Mary Pavey invited me one Wednesday in 1996 to go with her, and she always sat with Lydia and Roy Alholm whom I already knew. I enjoyed being with Mary, Lydia, and Roy so I joined. At that time, Mary was the Sunshine Person and Reporter. After Mary moved to live with her niece in Alabama, President Josephine Prochaska asked Linda Horner to be the sunshine person and asked me to be the reporter which was in 1997, and I’ve been reporter since then. Mary always signed her articles with “So Until, Keep Smiling” and I adopted her closing which Mary was so appreciative since she was still living at that time. I still miss my friend Mary and look forward to hearing from her niece Mary Kay on special occasions (Mary Kay gets the Vestnik). I was asked to lead everyone in prayer for those that were unable to be with us. Our decorations for the day were in the theme of St. Valentine’s Day. Upon arriving, we were all given a valentine and signed another slip with our name. Later, we drew names, and presented our valentine to our special friend. I drew Anna Marie Moncrief’s name, and she is my special friend. In the meantime, President Sharron made all get up and form two lines, and we did the Grand March with last month’s Queen Lydia leading. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went to our February celebrants Shirley Martin, Mary Ann Kozel, and Maria Gill. May you all have many more. All received a special cupcake with candle. Door prizes were donated by Lydia Alholm (two), Paula Arsenault (two), Helen Skrasek, Lola Taylor, and Mary Agnes Ward (two). We had eight happy winners. Winners of the 50/50 dollar games were Annie Marie Moncrief and Shirley Martin. All went home happy. Our current Sunshine Person Paula Hall sent word that she is now babysitting with her new grandbaby and will not be able to continue as Sunshine Person. Darlene Tompkins was appointed Sunshine Person. Call her at (817) 238-6352 with names of members that need to be remembered. Ann Marie Carminati invited everyone to the special fundraiser for the Carmelite Nuns on April 5, and she is in charge of the event. I’ve been to these events before, and they are always most enjoyable. Ann Marie said

it will be in our church bulletins prior to the event. We also learned that Ann Marie was a schoolmate of Rose Ann Spann. And, I also learned that Ann Marie is a member of St. Andrew’s Church, which is my church, and later that evening I saw her at the Missions. Sharron spoke briefly on her happy days of attending St. Thomas School. She told several stories and can make anything funny. Shirley Martin distributed Nettie Naugle’s address as she is now residing in a nursing home as she ran into Nettie’s daughter. Libbie reported on a note she received from Lucille Kret saying that she and her daughter, Linda Horner, are roommates at a nursing home in Azle. She went on to say that Linda is beginning to talk again, which we were all so glad to hear. Lucille asked if I retired as reporter as she has not seen my reports lately. I’ll call her to make sure she gave the Vestnik her new address. Libbie also reported that it was too cold for Anna Johnson to get out, and she sends greetings to all. Also, Camille Bolcer sends her greetings, and she misses everyone. Mary Ann Kozel reported Marilyn Llewellyn had knee surgery, and our prayers go out to Marilyn for a complete recovery. Former President Betty Krenek was called forward by President Sharron who presented her with a thank you card with a monetary collection from the members. Lydia Alholm stood up and said we also need to thank Stanley for all he did. Betty and Stanley always arrived early; Stanley set up tables while Betty made sure the coffee and tea were made by the time we arrived. And they were always there at the end to make sure all tables were put

back and the kitchen was left clean. A big thank you, Betty and Stanley! You always did great, and you were greatly appreciated. It was announced the theme for March will be Mardi Gras so everyone wear your purple, green, gold, etc. It was also noted our meeting will be on Ash Wednesday. Either bring a fish or tuna dish for those not eating meat, and I believe it was decided some chicken will be purchased for those that do not observe Ash Wednesday. Since I was “Queen for the Day” I was asked to lead everyone in the blessing. A great luncheon was enjoyed with fried chicken and all the wonderful side dishes and deserts. Games were then played. A good time was had by all. News Mary Ann Kozel attended the wedding on February 1 in Austin of the late Martha Boenisch’s granddaughter, Jennifer Henrich. Mary Ann said it was a beautiful wedding, and such a fun time was had by all. All of Mary Ann’s children and their families were in attendance, and Mary Ann even did the grand march with her grandson. She said the mother of the bride, Linda, and her husband, sure do know how to put on a party. Linda must take after her mother, Martha, as I remember Martha was such a fun-loving person. I enjoyed being the guest of Lydia Alholm at the Dallas Krouzek Christmas party which was held on the first Saturday in February due to being postponed because of the snow and ice in December. It was a lovely party and so nice to see and visit with so many friends. Evelyn Trojacek from the Tyler area was there, and it was so nice

to see her. Evelyn and I were grade school friends in Bardwell and used to spend the night with each other. She had to leave a little early, so she gave me two of her bingo cards to play. I told her that if I won on her card, I would mail the prize to her. Well, I did win, but it was on my own card, and I got the huge red basket with bottle of wine, crackers, cheese, sausage, popcorn, cookies, and candy. I’m not sure I could have mailed this prize, but I sure did enjoy it. Thanks, Dallas Ladies, for a lovely party, and Bessie’s food was wonderful, too. I had a nice surprise yesterday with a phone call from Rose Cuba in Wichita Falls. She said she still misses all her friends, has trouble walking now, and has to use a cane. It seems she was run into by a wheelchair and received some injuries. Also, she said she has trouble hearing, had her sister, Georgia, make the call to me, but Rose understood everything I said as I tried talking as loud as I could. She enjoys keeping up with all of us through the Vestnik. She said to tell everyone hello. On one of those cold, miserable days in January, I joined friends Gay and Darrell Williams and several others from their church, which is St. Andrews’s Episcopal, and we toured the Leonard’s Department Store Museum here in Fort Worth. Leonard’s was already closed by the time I moved to Fort Worth, but I have heard about it all these years. We thoroughly enjoyed looking at all the photos and articles and reading the history. To those of you that lived here during those days, did you know that one Saturday in 1937, the store’s bakery sold 30,000 one-pound loaves of bread at three loaves for a nickel. The train that ran in the window each Christmas was on display, and it still runs. Leonards’ advertising slogan was “More merchandise for less money,” and the store delivered on that promise. After our tour, we enjoyed lunch at the M&O Grill. The M stands for Marvin and O for Obie—the Leonard brothers. This museum is a couple blocks north of the Montgomery Plaza, free, and well worth your time to tour. We enjoyed it. The next meeting will be on Ash Wednesday—March 5. Lately, the weather has been so nice so let’s all hope it will be nice on that day. Anna Johnson said she is ready to get out and see her friends. She missed the last two meetings due to the cold weather. See you then! So Until, Keep Smiling, Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

SPJST Shiner Cemetery receives historical marker

The Texas Historical Commission (THC) has recognized SPJST Shiner Cemetery as a significant part of Texas history by awarding it an official Texas Historic Cemetery Marker. The designation honors SPJST Shiner Cemetery as an important and educational part of local history. A dedication ceremony to commemorate the event will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2014, at the SPJST Shiner Cemetery at 10 a.m. The cemetery is located in the complex of four Shiner Cemeteries on CR 348. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and umbrellas (to shield the sun) to the dedication ceremony. SPJST Shiner Cemetery was established by SPJST Lodge Texasky Mir No. 10, Shiner in 1906. Lodge 10, Shiner was established as a charter lodge of SPJST, a fraternal benefit society, in 1897. The cemetery contains over 240 burials. Frank Welfl who passed away on October 29, 1908, was the first individual buried in the cemetery. Home funeral services were very common during the first half of the twentieth century for individuals buried in the SPJST Shiner Cemetery. Local and regional SPJST lay ministers provided many of the funeral services to its members in the Czech language. Czech names are found on the headstones and forty-four headstones are inscribed in the Czech language. None of the SPJST Lodge 10, Shiner charter members are buried in the cemetery, but several charter members from SPJST lodges outside of Shiner are buried here. This includes Jakub Vackar, charter member of Lodge No. 19, Velehrad, who was president of the Congregation of Freethinkers in Lavaca and Fayette Counties and C.S.P.S. Lodge Radhost No. 114, Schulenburg. Finally, several individuals who belonged to a branch of the Ceskoslovenskeho Narodni Scruzeni of Shiner which helped raise funds for the independence of Czechoslovakia are buried in the SPJST Shiner Cemetery. Over 35 veterans of World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War are buried in the SPJST Shiner Cemetery. Two of these veterans lost their lives during wartime. Tom Welfel was the only veteran who

died during World War I. Frank Dolejsi lost his life in combat during World War II. The SPJST Shiner Cemetery is now maintained by the SPJST District Six Cemetery Organization. —SPJST—

God and West Texas By d.knape

When god was makin’ texas he started in the east and filled the place with godliness and beautiful pine trees It was such a paradise even he could not believe this place that he called Texas would be his masterpiece Then off he went creatin’ still makin’ lots of trees all the way out to West Texas he got there eventually

But he was out of business creation not a breeze by plantin’ all the way across Texas he just ran out of trees

Now here was his dilemma no trees were left to please so he made some thorny cactus and left some tumbleweeds

The rest he just left barren as far as eyes can see that’s why there’s plains in Texas why West Texas has no trees! —SPJST—

Expressions of Gratitude

“Homey” Environment

“Some brief reflections of our life at S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living Community”

The facility has a “homey” environment, yet it is decorated with class. We like it for my mother because we are confidant she is in a secure and safe place. She gets three nourishing meals per day, gets her medication given at the right times, has her housekeeping taken care of weekly, can go to church, beauty shop, and exercise right there in the facility. There are so many activities for our mom in the facility as well as out and about taking the “SPJST Bus” for outings. Sometimes she must pick and choose because there is more to do than time allows. From the director to receptionist, volunteers, cooking staff, nurse, maintenance, and housekeepers, etc. everyone is so friendly and gets to know each resident by name. The thing we like most though is that the family is encouraged to participate in activities and enjoy meals with your family member. It is great, too, that my sister from out of town is allowed to spend the night when she comes for a visit. We especially like the common areas we can reserve when many of us visit at the same time. If you are looking for a place for a loved one where you don’t have to worry about them, the S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living in Taylor is the place you are looking for. —Charlotte S. Albert of Thrall, Texas (Daughter of resident Arlene Schneider)

Friendly Neighbors and Good Friends

I can recommend S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living as a good place to live for several good reasons. You have your own apartment, furnished with your own things. There are personal assistants to assist you with what you need. The staff will assist you with medication, if needed. We have tasty and healthy full meals— three a day. We have our choice of games and crafts, also a variety of entertainment and church activities. Our neighbors are friendly, and we make good friends. —Abby Johnson, Resident

Many Advantages 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Small table dining. My two-room single person suite with bath. Furnishings and pictures from home. Plenty of plugs for sound system. The cleaning of apartments plus complimentary laundry. 6. Medicines managed. I do not have to schedule my own. 7. Meals are delicious. I have to guard against overeating.

These are just a few of the advantages . . . there are many more! —J. Noble Atkins, Resident

Beautiful Place and the Staff is Great

My name is Ruby Rakes. My husband Clarence and I have been married for 63 years. We came to S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living in March 2012. We moved here from Dumas, Texas, a small town north of Amarillo in the Panhandle. Our reason for moving here is that our daughter and her husband live here in Taylor, and we needed to be near them. We also have some of our grandchildren and great-grandchildren that are in the area, too. We feel fortunate to be living in such a beautiful place. The staff is great, and they are very helpful in making everything pleasant. We find the staff and residents friendly and always willing to help. We enjoy the church services, musical entertainment, and bingo. There is always some kind of entertainment we can choose to attend. We would recommend S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living to anyone. —Clarence and Ruby Rakes, Residents

Attentive Care; Close-Knit, Family-Oriented

I can’t say enough about what a blessing it is for my father to live at S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living in Taylor. The staff is caring, dedicated, reliable, and professional. They take a personal interest in each of the residents and make everyone feel welcome. They offer physical fitness and social activities that are so important in maintaining the well-being of the residents. It has been my experience and observation that the staff provides the attentive care that enables my father to “feel at home.” It gives my family and I great peace of mind knowing that he is safe, happy, and well-cared for in a close-knit family-oriented community. —Theresa Hajda (Daughter of resident V.J. Hajda)

Lots of Entertainment and Fun

I moved to Taylor when my son and his wife found this place this wonderful place. Everyone here is so friendly and nice. Staff, employees, and residents are so willing and able to help in so many ways. There are so many fun things to do here. Today, we visited the Blanton Museum of Art down at the University of Texas. It was wonderful. There is always something to do, exercise everyday in the week, and very well-attended. Lots of entertainment, bus trips, and more fun! I have used the exercise since I arrived, and it has certainly helped me physically. We have games, arts and crafts, painting, and more. —Ann Geil, Resident

MEMBER REFERRALS

When it comes to getting new SPJST members, there’s no substitute for member referrals. When an SPJST member refers a friend or family member for membership in SPJST, he or she is helping to build a stronger and more active lodge. It also qualifies you to participate in the monthly referral card drawing contest.

MONTHLY CONTESTS! All referral cards received during a given month will go into a drawing for three $25 Wal-Mart gift cards. The individual making the referral also benefits SPJST by helping to build a stronger and more active local lodge.

QUALIFY FOR THE DRAWING AT THE 2015 BANQUET! All referral cards received during the year will go into a drawing for five $100 Wal-Mart gift cards to be awarded at the 2015 SPJST Awards Banquet.
