Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club Presents Bench to ENC at Cooper Farm in Memory of Greg Bubela
Bobby Soxin’ Fun
Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club shares a bench in memory of Greg Bubela with Greg’s wife and District Six Youth Counselor Lisa Bubela at SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm on Saturday, February 22. The youth club purchased the bench as part of the ENC’s new “Benchmark Program.” Pictured are, front, left to right, Lodge 88 Youth Leader Barbara Linney-Gonzales, District Six Youth Counselor Lisa Bubela, Tyler Parker, Cheyenne Parker, Lodge 88 Assistant Youth Leader Michelle Wockenfuss, and Lodge 88 Youth Club President Denae Bronikowski. Back: Allison Wockenfuss, Keith Wockenfuss, Ryan Bronikowski, Natalie Zalesky, and Garry Zalesky. More on page 22.
SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm was perfect with me being able to present a check to the ENC from our District Five Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club to help benefit activities for future generations. But the youth club mostly enjoyed presenting this bench to a very loved husband, friend, and SPJST Lodge 30, Taiton member. It was a day full of emotions. I am glad that Lodge 88 Youth Club is helping so many people
and organizations. Also, we all had a blast learning parliamentary procedure and ways to grow and expand our knowledge for Youth Achievement Day at the Districts Five and Six Youth Development Workshop. What a fun day! Denae Bronikowski 2013-2014 District Five Queen Lodge 88, Houston —SPJST—

A Little Bit of History
Supreme Lodge met last Thursday, February 27 for a special called meeting. The main agenda item was to discuss the timetable and interview process that will be used to fill the unexpired term of Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride who is retiring on March 28, 2014. His term ends July 31, 2016. The meeting began at 8 a.m. After opening procedures and a brief discussion, the Supreme Lodge went into executive session. After more than an hour, I was invited back to the meeting. The Supreme Lodge then approved that applications for the Vice President’s position will be accepted between April 1 and July 1. The Vestnik will soon include an announcement regarding applications.
A Little Bit of History The Vestnik has received a couple inquiries regarding past Supreme Lodge Officers who have vacated their positions prior to the end of their terms. We researched the history book and past Vestniks. If anyone has any updated information, please contact the Vestnik office. In the history of SPJST, it’s unprecedented that a Supreme Lodge Officer resign prior to the completion of his/her term. However, the process of appointing a person to fill the unexpired term has been completed five times. Supreme Lodge Secretary J.R. Kubena served from 1897 to 1938. Brother Kubena was killed in an auto accident in May 1938. His son Joe R. Kubena was appointed to fill the unexpired term through 1940. Vestnik Editor L.O. Hosek served from 1956 to 1962. He passed away on October 25, 1962. Brother Nick A. Morris was appointed Vestnik Editor in a special meeting of the Supreme Lodge and Publication Committee held November 20, 1962. A total of six persons had applied for the position, plus one via a petition from fel-
low lodge members and one via telephone after the designated deadline. One person was not a member and was disqualified. Out of four qualified candidates for the post, Nick A. Morris was elected by unanimous vote, effective December 1, 1962. Supreme Lodge Vice President Joe B. Hejny served from 1957 to 1978. He passed away on May 24, 1978. Brother Bernie Gebala was appointed to finish Brother Hejny’s term through 1980. Excerpt from the Supreme Lodge’s July 1978 meeting: “The agenda turned to filling the vacancy created by the death of Brother Joe B. Hejny. The resumes from individuals interested in being considered for appointment for Vice President had been received and distributed to each Supreme Lodge member. The matter was discussed at length . . . Following lengthy consideration of the matter, Bernard M. Gebala was appointed Vice President of the Supreme Lodge, effective October 1, 1978.” It’s interesting to note that Brother McBride was hired as new State Field Manager, also effective October 1, 1978. Supreme Lodge Vice President Bernard M. Gebala passed away March 8, 1994. Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska was appointed by the Supreme Lodge on March 11, 1994, to fill Brother Gebala’s unexpired term. Brother Mikeska’s appointment to Vice President left the position of Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer vacant. The Supreme Lodge met on May 7, 1994, and voted to appoint Lanita Anglin to the office of Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer.

Member gives to Czech Heritage Museum in honor of Vestnik staff
Dear Melanie, Enclosed is a check for $100 for the Czech Heritage Museum in Temple, Texas honoring Melanie Zavodny and the Vestnik Staff for publishing Agnes Reznicek Owen’s 100th birthday. We appreciate the fine job on publishing this article and photos for my aunt. Sincerely, Anna Marie Moncrief Lodge 154, Fort Worth —SPJST—
Lodge 18, Elgin member sends letter to ASCAP
Melanie, Here is a sample of one of the letters that I sent to BMI and ASCAP. If the other lodges wish, they may make adjustments to fit their needs. Make a copy to keep in their records and mail one to me at SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin, PO Box 55, Elgin, Texas 78621. I might not get anywhere, but I have to try as we can not afford to keep paying these fees.
We, the members of SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin, Texas, are asking you to please work with us on this. We are not a restaurant, bar, or grill. We are
a fraternal organization that tries to help the community. We donate the hall for fundraisers, benefits, etc. We have the polka dances to keep the Czech/German heritage alive. We do not make enough money to keep paying the fees that you are charging us in 2013. Our dances brought in $18,851. We paid the bands $15,080.80. The hall made $3,770.20. That is not enough to pay your BMI bill of $4,770.00 (discounted to $4,293, if paid in full). We have another bill from ASCAP for more than $4,000. We feel we are being overcharged. In addition, our hall is old and in need of repair. As you know, that is not cheap even though our members do most of the work. We donate our time, and we are trying to work with you. Please hear us. We do not mind paying our share, but we cannot afford your bill. Letters can be mailed to these addresses: ASCAP P.O. From the President’s Department March Fraternal Updates
Save the Date: Saturday, May 3 SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls! Make plans to join in the fun and festivities of the 2014 SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration to be held Saturday, May 3 at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall. Seaton Star Hall is located approximately seven miles east of Temple, just off Highway 53. Previously, this springtime event was held in conjunction with the annual Bloomin’ Temple Festival. The decision to move the event to a rural setting provides us with the opportunity to spread out as well as to provide attendees with a more family-friendly event. And what kind of event will it be? There will be cars! And more cars! There will be Czech heritage displays, music, and entertainment. Admission is free. Donations and proceeds generated from event underwriters as well as from the silent and live auctions will benefit the Czech Heritage Museum in Temple, Texas, and the SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm. It is no accident that the event coincides with Join Hands Day. If your lodge or youth club is still looking for a Join Hands Day event, the 2014 SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration could be the place for you! Booth space is available to all comers for $25 for a 10-feet by 10-feet space. Lodges and youth clubs will have this fee waived. No food concessions, please. To reserve a space for your lodge, youth club, organization, business — or even for yourself, please contact State Youth Director Lynette Talasek at (800) 727-7578 or (254) 931-0639. Consistently, the SPJST Car Show has been one of the premier car show events in the Greater Central Texas area. Based on past SPJST Car Shows,
at least 36 classes of vehicles are expected to participate in this year’s event. For car show information or serve as a judge, please contact David Nauert at (254) 534-0809 or Melanie Zavodny (254) 534-0807 or email melaniez@vvm.com. Out-of-town visitors may want to plan an overnight stay as this is also the weekend of the big Central Texas Air Show held at the Draughon-Miller Central Texas Regional Airport. Complete air show details may be found at http://centraltexasairshow.com.
Lodges Invited to Apply For Join Hands Day Incentives May 3 marks the date for this year’s Join Hands Day. Join Hands Day is a program of the American Fraternal Alliance, which is the trade association for America’s and Canada’s fraternal benefit societies. It’s a day when young people and adults connect as equal partners in planning an activity that fixes or improves a local problem and affirms the values of caring and working together. SPJST strongly supports this initiative and encourages our lodges and youth clubs to get involved on this special day! This year, SPJST encourages lodges to direct their Join Hands Day effort out into the community. Many SPJST lodges work with other groups in the community on this day to make an even bigger impact locally. If you haven’t tried, please consider partnering with other adult or youth groups this year and making something good happen. You can visit http://fraternalalliance.org/join-hands-day/what-is-joinhands-day/for more ideas. As in past years, SPJST will be offering a $100 incentive to all lodges that register their project with the SPJST Home Office. You can do this by completing the Join Hands Day flyer and returning it to the SPJST

FAC Reporting Requirements Streamlined for 2014 In my Fraternal Updates for February, I reported to you the Fraternal Task Force of the American Fraternal Alliance reviewed activities across a broad range of fraternal areas, seeking to establish common standards of fraternal reporting and record keeping. I should receive information from American Fraternal Alliance during the first week of March to start setting up login and passwords for you. Under the new reporting method, the FAC will complete a simple onepage fill-in-the-blank/check-off form for each lodge meeting and fraternal activity. The new “one-form fits all” eliminates the need for the three-part forms that have been used by SPJST for a number of years. The process also eliminates the necessity of filing both the FAC mid-year report and FAC annual report. Instead, the new form may be completed online following the lodge meeting or event. If the FAC
does not have access to a personal computer or would rather submit the information on a paper form, blank forms will be provided by the SPJST Home Office to the FAC. It will then be necessary for the FAC to send the completed forms into the SPJST Home Office on a quarterly basis, enabling Home Office personnel to key in the information. I will be getting the blank forms to you in the April Fraternal Updates packet. I am also including the Fraternal Activities Coordinator Position Description and 2104 Reference Guide. This guide will have important information such as FAC Reporting Requirements Streamlined for 2014, Premium Refund Program Expanded to Include Incentives, and Lodge Activity Guide.
time to send in your contribution to the Supreme Lodge. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Since its inception in 1982, the scholarship program has presented SPJST scholars with 1,817 scholarships valued at more than $1.2 million. Our goal this year is to raise $20,000. This is in addition to the allocation the Supreme Lodge has made. Any amount you submit will be greatly appreciated.
Monthly Contests All referral cards received during a given month will go into a drawing for three $25 Wal-Mart gift cards. The individual making the referral also benefits SPJST by helping to build a stronger and more active local lodge.
SPJST State Horseshoe Tournament Canceled The SPJST State Horseshoe Tournament scheduled for Saturday, May 17 has been canceled. If there is a lodge with horseshoe facilities or ready access to horseshoe facilities interested in sponsoring the tournament on that date — or any other date — or would like help setting up a tournament, let me know at frankh@spjst.com or (254) 534-0681.
Member Referrals Wanted: Participate in the Monthly Prize Drawing SPJST needs referrals! When it comes to getting new SPJST members, there is no substitute for member referrals. When an SPJST member refers a friend or family member for membership in SPJST, he or she is helping to build a stronger and more active lodge. It also qualifies you to participate in the monthly referral card drawing contest.
Qualify for the Drawing at the 2015 Banquet All referral cards received during the year will go into a drawing for five $100 Wal-Mart gift cards to be awarded at the SPJST Awards Banquet in 2015. If you have any questions, please contact me for more information at frankh@spjst.com or call me (254) 534-0681.
100 Pennies Scholarship Drive As we head into the final month for our 2014 scholarship drive, now is the
State “42” Domino Tournament The State “42” Domino Tournament will be hosted by Lodge 88, Houston on April 5. Please pre-register by April 1 so I can let the host lodge know how much food to prepare for lunch. We do accept walk-ins as well. We hope to see many of our domino players in attendance along with non-members. To request a registration form, contact Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez in the Fraternal Department at tammym@spjst.com or (800) 727-7578 to request a form. Please invite and encourage your friends to participate and enjoy a day of fraternalism. Registration for members and non-members will be $7 and will include lunch.
End of Summer Getaway It is not too early to start planning for the Corpus Christi Getaway. This event gets bigger and better each year. Last year, approximately 340 men, women, boys and girls from across the state came out to enjoy the weekend fraternal celebration. Once again, the 2014 celebration

commences with the Aloha Party Friday night. In addition to the Friday golf tournament, plans are now being made to also host a deep-sea fishing outing for those wanting to get a jump on the weekend fun. Saturday’s events will once again include sand sculpting, horseshoes, 42, Bunco, and an evening party. This year, the Saturday night festivities will take on a “Hee Haw” flavor! Additional details will be printed in the Vestnik as they become available.
Fraternal Alliance Of Texas (FAOT) Bowling Tournament What a great day it turned out to be on February 1 at Fiesta Lanes in New Braunfels, Texas. Twenty-four teams representing five fraternals in the state of Texas enjoyed a day of fun and fraternalism while raising money for FAOT scholarships. Bowling, the silent auction, and sales of raffle tickets raised $2,188.90 for this worthy cause. Thanks for your support. If you missed this year’s event, please make plans now to participate in next year’s tournament. Any SPJST members that participate in league bowling, please think about joining in the fun next year. KJT has won the trophy cup for the fifth consecutive year, and we would love to see the large trophy cup at the SPJST Home Office. Please contact me if you are interested in bowling next year. District Two Spring Meeting Sunday, March 16 at Lodge 24, Cyclone
Hosted by Lodge 4, Hallettsville American Legion Hall • 107 East Park Street in Hallettsville, Texas
Dear District Two Members, I just want to remind everyone that the time is coming again for the District Two Spring Meeting. The spring meeting will be Sunday, March 16, 2014, at Lodge 24, Cyclone Flag Hall. Lodge 24 asked Lodge 18, Elgin if they could switch dates. Therefore, our fall meeting will be held at Lodge 18, Elgin in September. District Two Officers recently met with the officers of Lodge 24, Cyclone regarding setting up for the spring meeting. We will have Saint Patrick’s Day decorations, and we are asking that everyone please come in green. Let’s make this a fun meeting even though it is our business meeting. We will have guessing games, prize drawing, and door prizes . . . so you see not everything has to be all business. We are having an Easter egg decorating contest again for the youth and the adults, so please do your best to decorate an egg. Who knows? . . . you may just win a prize. We have had some
very nice, decorated eggs in the past, and I know you will do an excellent job again. Also, District Two Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky will be having a silent auction to raise money for the youth club. Please help to support our youth and bring an item or two for the auction. Remember this is the time for election of officers for the district. If anyone would like to run for any of these officer positions, please let it be known. Lodge 24, Cyclone will serve a wonderful meal of sausage and sauerkraut with green beans, potatoes, bread, tea, and dessert. Come on out to Flag Hall on Sunday, March 16, and let’s all have a great time together. We hope to see you there! Districts Five and Six Host Sales Agents’ Planning Meeting
More than 50 people showed up for the Districts Five and Six annual planning meeting. In attendance were Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride, District One Director Donnie Victorick, District Five Director Larry W. Pflughaupt, and District Six Director Karen Kaspar. During the meeting, Delisle Doherty laid out 2014 goals and expectations for the agents. He also reintroduced the orphan program with 22 agents signing up to go to training to work on the orphan accounts. In addition, a new training for “How to do Annual Reviews” was introduced, and 30 agents signed up for this new program. Donnie Strickland introduced the Dignity Memorial tool, and 23 agents signed up to join this program, which makes 36 total agents in the two districts learning this new tool. We had a large trash party in which the agents threw away all old brochures and paperwork and were assigned new brochures and paperwork. We also reviewed changes from the last two years and a set new bi-monthly training schedule with classes set through March 2015, which includes 14 hours
7
of continuing education classes. The agents were excited to see the direction we are moving in, and they are even more excited to get the new review and orphan program started. The meeting included a special goodbye to Gene McBride. Gene was presented gifts which included a “retirement survival hat,” along with a new fishing pole and lures to keep him busy with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We wish Gene all the best! This meeting has poised Districts Five and Six to make 2014 a very successful year. Fraternally, Delisle L. Doherty Districts Five and Six Fraternal Field Manager —SPJST—

SPJST Shiner Cemetery marker/ dedication ceremony Mar. 29
The Texas Historical Commission (THC) has recognized SPJST Shiner Cemetery as a significant part of Texas history by awarding it an official Texas Historic Cemetery Marker. The designation honors SPJST Shiner Cemetery as an important and educational part of local history. A dedication ceremony to commemorate the event will be held on
Saturday, March 29, 2014, at the SPJST Shiner Cemetery at 10 a.m. The cemetery is located in the complex of four Shiner Cemeteries on County Road 348. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and umbrellas (to shield the sun) to the dedication ceremony. SPJST Shiner Cemetery was established by SPJST Lodge Texasky Mir No. 10, Shiner in 1906. Lodge 10, Shiner was established as a charter lodge of SPJST, a fraternal benefit society, in 1897. The cemetery contains more than 240 burials. Frank Welfl who passed away on October 29, 1908, was the first individual buried in the cemetery. Home funeral services were very common during the first half of the 20th century for individuals buried in the SPJST Shiner Cemetery. Local and regional SPJST lay ministers provided many of the funeral services to its members in the Czech language. Czech names are found on the headstones, and 44 headstones are inscribed in the Czech language. None of the SPJST Lodge 10, Shiner charter members are buried in the cemetery, but several charter members from SPJST lodges outside of
Shiner are buried here. This includes Jakub Vackar, charter member of Lodge No. 19, Velehrad, who was president of the Congregation of Freethinkers in Lavaca and Fayette Counties and C.S.P.S. Lodge Radhost No. 114, Schulenburg. Finally, several individuals who belonged to a branch of the České Národní Sdružení of Shiner which helped raise funds for the independence of Czechoslovakia are buried in the SPJST Shiner Cemetery. Over 35 veterans of World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War are buried in the SPJST Shiner Cemetery. Two of these veterans lost their lives during wartime. Tom Welfel was the only veteran who died during World War I. Frank Dolejsi lost his life in combat during World War II. The SPJST Shiner Cemetery is now maintained by the SPJST District Six Cemetery Organization. —SPJST—

President Nell Stautberg opened the meeting at 11:10 a.m. Chaplain Helen Hegwood said an opening prayer and led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. The roll of membership was called, and we had six members present. The minutes from the December meeting were read and approved as read. There was no meeting in January since we went on a trip. Nell asked for a cake for the next meeting, and Vernell Foyt will make a cake. Since our next meeting will be during the lent season, our lunch will consist of an assortment of salads. Treasurer Vernell Foyt gave her report. Then, Sunshine Chairlady Delores Pavlicek gave her report stating that she mailed a birthday card to Vernell Foyt who had birthday in January. President Nell Stautberg thanked Helen Hegwood for a wonderful trip we had to Galveston. We went to see a show at the IMAX theater in Moody Gardens. Then, we went to Golden Corral for lunch. After lunch, we rode

Helen Hegwood made a motion, seconded by Willie Mae Pechacek, that all officers remain for the coming year. The motion carried. We discussed kolaches for Founders Day on February 22. It was decided to purchase 25 dozen kolaches, and Nell will make the arrangements for the kolaches. Instead of cakes, we will have cookies and cupcakes. Ennis Sewing Circle
Ennis Sewing Circle met on Thursday, February 13, 2014. Ann Clagett, Pat Fowler, and I arrived about 8 a.m. We decided to gather in the club room. It was cold, and it is always warm and cozy, and the tables and chairs are set up. Coffee was started, and we began stretching Pat Fowler’s quilt. Before we knew it, Irene Prachyl, Dorothy Prachyl, Victoria Vlk, Martha Ritchey, Georgia Holy, Dolores Vrana, Cheryl Prachyl, Dorothy J. Kudrna, and Maggie Holy were there. We had quilters all around. I hope I didn’t miss anyone. At 10:30 a.m., President Irene started her workshop. Georgie Holy and Dolores Vrana had their material, and Irene showed them how to fold and start cutting. I was amazed at how they do it nowadays. I would have cut one piece at a time. That shows you how behind I am in things. Anyway, it was interesting, and I did learn something. By lunch time, we had 21 members and one guest Joe Ehrenberger. President Irene led us in grace, and we enjoyed a delicious lunch of taco soup and chili and many other wonderful dishes and desserts. Thank you all and thank you for the set-up and clean-up. After lunch, quilters returned to quilting. President Irene called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Alle-

Kudrna and from Pam Todd, Libbie Elsik’s daughter, for the Christmas sack for Libbie and Vicki Kohn and for Libbie’s birthday card. Dolores read two funny clippings that were enjoyed by all. Ann Clagett was our Sunshine Lady as Eleanora had a treatment. Our birthday celebrants were Anne Tupy,

Libbie Wisniewski, and Sidney Bridewell. We were so happy that Sidney was present. It was her 96th birthday. We all got to sing to her. Pat Fowler announced we will quilt for Dorothy Valek in March. Dorothy J. has one coming up soon, and in August, we will quilt our Ennis Sewing Circle Christmas quilt. Dorothy J. has donated a baby quilt. The little squares were cut by her sister Evelyn, and Ann volunteered to sew and quilt it for our Circle. We will sell chances on it in July at our elephant sale. Thank you both, Dorothy J. and Ann. Henrietta Milan and Joyce Ehrenberger have also donated items to our Circle that we will sell chances on in July. Thank you, both, so much. President Irene also talked about noodle cutting strips of material. More will be talked about next month. It sounded like a really good idea. Thank you to Kay Lynn Kovar for the lovely valentines with a piece of peppermint candy on each that she sent to all the members. We miss you, Kay Lynn. Thanks so much. We also missed Josephine Kubin. She had a doctor appointment. We hope all went well. On February 8, Ennis Sokol had the Czech Music Festival. The weather turned out good, and all went well. The music and food was enjoyed by all. Several of our members Margaret, Ginny, Willie, Barbara, Dorothy, and Dorothy J. enjoyed dancing. I got to see many friends in the museum. One was Milton and Madaline Jaresh. Milton and I went to school together. It is always good to talk with him. A very nice lady Jenelle Janosky Cerny from Bellville stopped in the museum and brought a very old postcard with a picture of “A road leading into Ennis, Texas.” She found the postcard in her grandparents’ belongings. It was postmarked 1915 with a one cent stamp. The picture had four bales of cotton and four wagons pulled by two mules or horses. It was written in Czech signed by Frank J. Honza. Neither one of us could read it. Later, Carolyn Holub came in and read it, and it said that he (Frank Honza) was wishing them well and sending them some cotton from Ennis. The postcard will be 100 years old next year. I think that was so nice of Jenelle Cerny for donating it to our museum. I showed it to everyone who came in. Thank you so much. It was good to see Maggie Holy. We have missed her, and I did see her washing dishes.

I forgot to mention earlier that Lil Kosarek helped Irene with the fabric cutting during the workshop. The 50-50 dollar game was won by Georgia Holy. Irene thanked all for coming, the food, the set-up, and clean-up. She announced the next meeting will be March 13. I made a motion that we adjourn, and it was seconded by Pat Fowler.
Other News Congratulations to Joyce and Joe Ehrenberger; they are expecting their first great-grandchild on Valentine’s Day - a little girl, who will be named Maddie. Joe and Joyce will also be celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary with a luncheon with Joyce’s nursing school friends. Take care everyone. We will see you on March 13, have lunch, meeting, and 50-50 game. Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST—

State Youth Director presents March updates
Dear Youth Leaders, On January 26, 2014, District Youth Counselors and I met for our spring meeting at SPJST Home Office. I am happy to report that we confirmed all district camp dates and made changes to the SPJST Youth Handbook. We completed all new business: royalty line-up for 2014 and DYC Fall Meeting was set for September 27 and 28 hosted by District Five. Congratulations to all of the winners in the Friendship 2013 incentive program! I enjoyed visiting with many of our members at the SPJST Awards Banquet held January 25 in Temple and was happy to see the winning youth clubs receive checks. Now, let’s focus on SPJST’s Step Up to the Plate membership drive! I hope to see each and every youth leader come up to the front of the auditorium and accept an award on behalf of their youth club at next year’s banquet. Please remind your youth members to use the referral cards for new members. All referral cards received by the SPJST Home Office during the month will go into a drawing for three $25 Wal-Mart gift cards. The person making the referral also benefits by helping to build a stronger and more active local lodge. All referral cards received during the year will go into a drawing for five $100 Wal-Mart gift cards to be awarded at the SPJST Awards Banquet in 2015. Please help us to ensure that the leads that your youth members pass on are quality leads. We would
not want any sales agent to devote precious time to calling on unqualified leads. A good referral is someone who an SPJST member has spoken with about joining. In visiting with your prospective lead, make sure that he or she knows that an SPJST sales agent will call them. Also, remind your club members about the “Top Youth Club in District” Award. It is a swimming, etc. party for the leader and youth members, not to exceed $200. You can do it!

If so, then you probably have a good idea what it’s all about. Like the SPJST SPJST,, the idea behind Join Hands Day is simple: It’ It’ss based on the simple idea of doing good for each other and for our local communities. organi Join Hands Day was established in 1999 as a way for fraternal organiganiknow,, to bring don’tt know zations like the SPJST to reach out to people they don’ adults and youth together and to build new relationships. In 2013, a total of 45 SPJST lodges participated in Join Hands Day activities. Activities ranged from clean-up and beautification projects to collection drives and raising money for local causes. Even though Join Hands Day is still two months away away,, it’ it’ss a good idea to start planning early for a successful event. A good place to start is to identify someone at the lodge who will serve as your project leader leader.. This will be the person responsible for registering the project and helping to effort. fort. Next it’ coordinate the ef it’ss important to choose a worthwhile project. worth What makes a worthwhile project? It should be big enough to be worthpeo while and challenging yet small enough to be done with the time and people available. It should be a project that involves both youth and adult
members. SPJST youth clubs and adult lodges are encouraged to discuss Join Hands Day activities in their March and April meetings. When the adults and youth of a lodge get together to host a Join Hands Day activity, activity, the SPJST Home Office Office provides a $100 incentive award for the lodge upon completion of the event. Lodge youth leaders and fraternal activity coordinators have received information from the Home Office Office on how to apply for the incentive award and register Join Hands Day projects.

Mark Your Calendar: May 3 is Join Hands Day Our goal for 2014 is to have 50 or more lodges participate. What can your youth club do? Some of the great projects from past years include baking for the needy, cemetery clean-ups, highway beautification, assisting veterans and senior citizens programs, conducting a variety of fix-up and refurbishing projects, and fundraiser for your local volunteer fire department. You’ve still got plenty of time to decide what you want to do in 2014. The main thing — at this point — is committing to doing something. When coming up with ideas for your project try to do something that will be no-
ticed by the public. If you have any questions on this, please contact me. Again, this year, the Home Office will offer a $100 incentive to local SPJST lodges to be used in developing and/or promoting their project. This incentive will be for lodges who partner with youth in their community. To receive the $100 incentive, lodges must register the event with the Home Office prior to Join Hands Day. The Supreme Lodge will then forward a check to the lodges who have registered.
2014 SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration Make plans to join in the fun and festivities of the 2014 SPJST Car Show
and Czech Heritage Celebration to be held Saturday, May 3 at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall. Donations and proceeds generated from event underwriters as well as

The Districts Five and Six Youth Development Workshop held at SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm was incredibly informative and also fun. We had our amazing State Youth Director Lynette Talasek teach us the parliamentary process by making a giant bowl of Chex mix that consisted of ingredients that we, the people, made motions for, seconded, amended, discussed, and voted on. This method of teaching presented a new side of the process that I never quite understood before, but is very important as all SPJST meetings follow these procedures. Now, I feel that I as well as the others who attended have been empowered with the ability to change and create things within our lodges. Grasping the concepts of the parliamentary process can be very difficult, but this fun activity gave a more clear perspective as to what I can do as a member of my youth club and SPJST. Next, Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny talked to us about what makes a photo a great photo. Yea, that’s right! We got the inside tips from SPJST’s most renown photographer. She emphasized the importance of starting early and taking many pictures at different times of the day, with different lighting, and experimenting with camera settings until you get that “perfect” shot. Hopefully, these new skills will help us to excel at District and State YAD. After a great lunch of hot dogs and chili dogs, Melissa
Brown talked to us about social speaking skills. I have taken debate and theatre arts and have been told that I am naturally a good speaker so I thought there wasn’t much more for me to learn. Boy, was I wrong! Ms. Brown showed us techniques that I had never seen. One activity had some of the younger members reading children’s books out loud as if they were speeches. I found this as a highly intelligent strategy as the kids would recognize the simplicity of some of their favorite books so they could focus on implementing the new elements of speech presentation they had learned. The kids really connected with the lessons and had a great time. I bet Ms. Brown’s high school students love her – she teaches with such passion! Special thanks to Districts Five and Six for welcoming us to the event. The day was filled with information, and I am sure everyone learned something—thanks to the informative program content and special guest presenters. It takes a lot of work to organize an event like this, and you are to be commended for a job well done. I thoroughly enjoyed the event, seeing my friends from camp, and making a new friend – Tyler. District Two youth learn, eat pizza, skate
Dear Members, February 15, 2014—What a fantastic day for District Two youth. It was a long, busy, and well-attended day. The day began at 11 a.m. with 26 youth practicing beseda. Several were there for their first practice and others to help with organizing the couples and keep everyone moving. I am so proud of each one of you. If everyone keeps their commitment, we will have three to four beseda groups for the year. While the groups were entertained dancing, parents met to talk about the barbecue lunch fundraiser, which will be held on Sunday, April 27. Raffle tickets were also distributed to each family. Tickets are available from any beseda dancer. Prizes are first prize -
Kindle Fire HD, second prize - dinner and movies for four, and third prize Round Rock Express Family Fun Pack. We also talked about suggestions for the group trip. No plans have been make so far, so beseda dancers, send me your request. Next on the agenda for the day was the first ever, District Two Youth Development Workshop. It was great to have 53 youth and 12 adults attending. Youth were divided into the groups by their grades. State Youth Director Lynette Talasek gave an outstanding presentation on parliamentary procedures. Her presentation included the correct procedure from making a motion to the final steps of voting. All this was done with the ingredients of Chex Mix. It was super interesting and a great snack! Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny also added

much information to the groups. Youth who had never been in front of an audience and up to a podium were able to come up and speak into the microphone. She also addressed that “Everyone who tries, is a winner,” our District Two motto. Melanie introduced a neat game ”SPJST Bingo Lingo.” I am sure this will be a great hit at many District Two activities, including camp. Photographer Scott Woodall presented some awesome tips on picture taking. He took the groups outside, and everyone took a picture of the United States Flag flying proudly in the beautiful weather. Scott was very pleased how well the pictures turned out and did offer advice on the clarity and centering of the flag. In between the sessions, if time allowed, groups played one of their most favorite games “Ships and

Sailors.” What an awesome game! Thank you to those who led the game. It seemed like the day had just begun when the pizza arrived. All who attended were treated with pizza and drinks. These youth worked up a lot of energy and were definitely ready for this part of the program. Pizza! We thank all three of our guest speakers, Lynette, Melanie, and Scott for taking their time to share their special talent with District Two. Thank you also to our Director Jesse and Linda Pospisil for joining us for the day. A special thank you to SPJST for allowing us to have our workshop at the Home Office. Our day wasn’t over yet. All pizza gone, Home Office back in order, we traveled up the road to Wheels Family Skating Center to meet even more youth club members and friends. Those two hours of skating seemed to roll past us. It was a great time with no serious accidents. Well, maybe pride was hurt a little after a few falls. Everyone had a great time! No competition, and once again, our motto “Everyone in District Two is a winner.” All youth walked out with a golden dollar coin. Thank you all for such a wonderful day. I can hardly wait for our next activity to see you all again—Sunday, March 16 at Lodge 24, Cyclone for the District Two Spring Meeting/Kraslice contest. Registration is from 1 to 2 p.m. Have a fun and safe spring break! Love, Patsy Koslovsky District Two Youth Counselor

District Two youth invited to spring meeting
The District Two Spring Meeting will be held on Sunday, March 16, 2014, at SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone. Registration of your kraslice (Czech Easter egg) entry is from 1 to 2 p.m. All entries must be registered by the participant by 2 p.m. You can find the rules on page 38 of your SPJST Youth Club Handbook. I hope each of you will participate. Participation money will be given. The top three eggs in each age category will receive cash prizes. As always, each participant will be a winner. Talk your mom and dad into entering, also! The district youth club will host a silent auction. Donated items will be appreciated. We look forward to those homemade desserts and home-canned goods. We thank members in advance who will be bringing and bidding on items. We appreciate the great support the members of District Two have always given to our youth. Proceeds will go towards two inscribed plaques
to go on each of the shade shelter structures at SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm, which were purchased and donated by the District Two Youth. It will be nice to have a shaded area on those hot July days at camp! The youth will be entertained during the meeting by making a group craft for S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home and S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living facility in Taylor. A large Easter card will also be made and signed by all the youth. We want to support and give to these fine facilities of SPJST. Our District Two Beseda Dancers always enjoy visiting and performing at each one. We will also play bingo and hopefully have time to enjoy the outdoors. Door prizes will be awarded to adults and youth attending the meeting. A meal will be served following the election of officers. The meal will be $4 per person. I look forward to seeing you at the spring meeting! Fraternally, Patsy Koslovsky District Two Youth Counselor —SPJST—
District Three youth participate in workshop
Hello, Everyone. As you know, just recently our district had a lock-in where a lot of you attended and hopefully had an awesome time. What was really awesome was two of our favorite people— Melanie Zavodny and David Nauert— came out and showed us a presentation on how the Communication Department works along with a couple of exercises for the youth to do to help them be comfortable with others and to meet people they didn’t know at all. Melanie also wanted to mention that the youth can use the website to submit letters or suggestions that you may have and want to share to or through the Communication Department. So on that note, we all would like to thank you both for taking time to come out and speak to us. You are always welcome any time. An officers workshop was also held by Lynda Novak. This was about knowing the duties of the different of-

ficers and what they are and how they should prepare for their meetings. I heard some adults had a great time and were also kept awake all night by some other folks. So for all the youth, here are a few reminders. The District Three Spring Meeting is Sunday, April 27 at Lodge 25, Ennis. All youth should attend because it’s election time for officers especially if you would like to hold a position along with some planning for the next year. Don’t forget to bring your very creative (kraslice) egg for the contest. Registration begins at 10 a.m., and judging will start at 10:30 a.m. so show a little early and have fun! Since I’m a senior this year, I wanted to thank you for a fun position as District Three Reporter. Good luck to our next candidate. In Memory of Honorary District Two Director Willie E. Kohutek Eulogy Presented by Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek
On behalf of the SPJST Supreme Lodge, we celebrate Brother Willie’s life and his legacy of fraternalism. As we mourn our loss, our thoughts and prayers are with those who were closest to him: His wife Adeline, and his children Kenneth, Ralph, Gordon; his brother, Louis, and their families. Brother Willie Willie Kohutek was a faithful and devoted member of the SPJST for more than 67 years. I want to emphasize that . . . that’s 67-years of service — not just numbers on a page — good times and even hard times during which Brother Willie touched and enlightened the lives of so many. A lot of Saturday night dances. A lot of Beseda performances. A lot of picnics, auctions, and fundraisers. A lot of lodge and trustee meetings. A lot of everything! An outstanding record of fraternal achievement within SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton, SPJST District Two and within the SPJST. So much so that in 1997, Brother Kohutek received the SPJST’s highest fraternal honor when he was recognized as our Statewide Fraternalist of the Year. Willie worked at what he loved. He worked hard and he was meticulous when it came to managing a project. He didn’t do anything half way. And why? Because he loved his fellow
man and he loved celebrating his Czech heritage. It was in 1947 that Willie — still pretty much of a newlywed himself— took on the responsibility of serving as SPJST life insurance sales representative. To excel in life insurance sales — requires drive and self-discipline. It’s a calling that can be all at once time-consuming and rewarding — financially, to a degree — but more rewarding in the sense that you have the opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of others. And Brother Willie was very good at it! At being an SPJST sales representative for nearly 40 years! During those years, he repeatedly received recognition from the Society for his sales accomplishments. If that had been his sole achievement that would have been enough to rank him high on the list of SPJST fraternalists. But that’s only part of the story. It was also in 1947 that Brother Willie — along with his devoted bride Sister Adeline — took on the very real and time-consuming obligation of serving as bar manager and band booking manager for SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton. And so, this would be the opening chapter of what would be one of the defining marks of the Willie and Adeline Kohutek Family. They were SPJST people — supporters and boosters of the Society in much the same way that Aggies and Longhorns remain true to their schools and Americans embrace the ideas of freedom and democracy. SPJST — this idea of doing good for each other and giving back to the community — defined their very existence. And that commitment extended to the family: Kenneth, Gordon, and Ralph all had a second home — especially on weekends there at Seaton Star Hall — helping Dad ice down the drinks on a Saturday afternoon; running and sliding on the dance floor on Saturday night; and — most likely — sleeping under a table into the wee hours until Mom and Dad closed the place down . . . and then come back again — the next morning — to sweep and pick up the hall from the night before. Earlier I said that Brother Willie was meticulous and detail-oriented. Some of you will recall the massive — and incredibly accurate — membership book that Brother Willie maintained for Lodge 47, Seaton’s during his 19 years as financial secretary. I should add that he also served as SPJST District Two Treasurer for nine
years. Willie was well-respected and liked by his fellow members. In 1984, SPJST District Two delegates to the 24th SPJST Convention in Corpus Christi elected Willie to serve as District Two Director — and as such — a member of the SPJST Supreme Lodge. The period between Willie’s arrival on the board and his retirement as Director in 1996 was a period of considerable growth for SPJST. When he came on board in 1984, the Society recorded assets of $34.7 million. When he retired in 1996, SPJST posted assets of close to $112 million, representing a more than three-fold — or 300 percent — increase. Those are impressive numbers, and Willie helped to guide the Society in its business dealings during these prosperous years. As a director, Willie was not a fence-sitter. He made common sense decisions on matters ranging from mortgage loans and investment strategies to new business development and fraternal activities. And in the sage words of Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska, “If there was ever anything new that came along — a question related to the evolving technology or in matters of financial reporting — he made a point to learn what it was all about. Well-mannered. Respectful. Pragmatic. He was an excellent director.” Brother Willie was fiercely loyal to this idea of fraternalism. Of giving to others. Of stepping up to the plate and providing leadership when and where it was most needed. And of asking precious little in return. And goodness knows. It wasn’t always easy. It sometimes meant sacrificing personal time — family time — to this idea of Fraternalism. It has been said that the Lord works in mysterious ways: The Bible states repeatedly that we experience victorious living only when we are focused on and serving the needs of others — and not ourselves. That is a value that we want to pass on to our children. Therein — I believe resides the legacy — of Willie’s lifetime of fraternal commitment. It is through sacrifice that God develops our character and uses us to impact others lives for Him. This biblical value — and this fraternal value — of service to others with joy and humility — is passed on to Kenneth, to Ralph, and to Gordon and to their children and now their grandchildren. Going back to the 1990s, when

Brother Willie was serving as Supreme Lodge Director, he would sometimes come in and visit with me in the Editor’s office — and to reminisce about the early days . . . and then the talk would turn to the present and he would beam about the young people at Lodge 47, Seaton who had started taking a more active role on the lodge board of trustees, as committee chairs, and as lodge officers, keeping the fraternal ideal alive for the next generation. What I learned then and am here today to affirm was that Brother Willie was involved in fraternalism not to get what he could but to give all that he could . . . He led by example and was very matter-of-fact about it all. “We just did what we did because it needed to be done,” he would say. “The lodge. That was our special place. People enjoyed it. Getting together with your friends and your family Having a little fun.” And really, isn’t that what we’re all looking for — in life? A special place? Getting together with your family and friends. Having a little fun? There is a passage that I would like to conclude with which is found in our old SPJST ritual book. It’s a passage that addresses the passing of an esteemed member of our fraternal order ... The final gavel has been sounded by the Supreme Architect and the curtains of fraternal love and fellowship have been drawn together on the life of our departed brother . . . Those of us who were close to Brother Willie and came in contact with him frequently know that he spent a great deal of his time in an earnest effort to lessen the hardships, sufferings, and various problems of the members of his immediate family, as well as of his fellow members in our Order, and of all his fellow men. He exemplified the beauty of true fraternity and fulfilled the obligations and promises that he took at the time when he was admitted as a member. He lived and served according to the instructions and teachings he received in our Order on Benevolence, Humanity, and Brotherhood. May honor be given to Brother Willie’s memory now and forever. —SPJST—

Je nutné, aby pomlouvači naší nadace přestali s falešnými obviněními a dali se raději do aktivní podpory naší nadace Jinak popřál dodatečně šťastný a veselý Nový rok 2014. Pokladník Tony Pustějovský přednesl velmi pěknou výroční zprávu a jen by si přál, aby naši příznivci posílali větší částky peněz, pokud možno v tisících dolarů, abychom mohli případně dokončit všechny naše

porující jednoty státu Texasu a v Našinci z Granger, TX.

—SPJST—
