Spring Break Travels: District Four Youth Visit Temple
March 26, 2014
Congratulations, Gene McBride!
By Beverly Teplicek District Four Youth Counselor
On Wednesday, March 12, 2014, the District Four Youth Club outing was “super” fun and educational with 16 youth and four adults participating. The group left Rowena at 7 a.m. with Brad’s car loaded with girls, and Beverly took the boys. First stop was at the Dairy Queen in Goldthwaite— the north wind was blowing and cold, but that did not dampen our spirits! Arriving at the SPJST Home Office shortly after 10 a.m., we were greeted by Lynette and Melanie, along with Frank, Ruth, and Sandra—wow! They all made us feel so welcome. This was the first time for many of the group to be in the Home Office where they were able to see the work that is done to keep SPJST insurance and fraternalism succeeding. The youth were impressed to see their youth club scrapbook along with

March . . . ing through SPJST
March was filled with lots of
great events in SPJST. David and I throughly enjoyed the ones we attended. Lodge 29, Taylor hosted a very successful fundraiser. My compliments to the members of Lodge 29, Taylor for a delicious meal, wonderful hospitality, and auctions filled with many, many donated items. It always amazes me how many individuals and businesses give items to this awesome event. Great job! I was thoroughly honored to serve as a judge for the second annual chili cook-off at Lodge 87, Temple. The youth club hosted the event that attracted 11 very tasty chili entries and five amazing bean dishes. The hall was filled with cooks and supporters. Hats off to the lodge and youth club leaders for a well-organized event. See pictures in next week’s Vestnik. The District Two Spring Meeting was hosted by Lodge 24, Cyclone on Sunday, March 16. My compliments to Lodge 24 for a fantastic meal and a very welcoming atmosphere. Lodge 24’s leaders were dressed in coordinating bright, blue shirts to match their bright, smiling faces. And, the hall looked beautiful, too. At the Home Office, we enjoyed a very special visit from Lodge 49, Rowena Youth Club during spring break. That really made my week to see and visit with these awesome young people and their leaders and parents. Come back anytime!
Parade Time Believe it or not, parade season is rolling around again! The first parade appearances for the SPJST Floats this year will be on Saturday, April 12 at Needville Youth Fair at 9
a.m. Members of the newly organized Lodge 81, Needville Youth Club will ride the float in the parade. Later that same day, the float will be at the Smithville Jamboree parade at 2 p.m. Lodge 38, Kovar will host the float in Smithville. If your lodge or youth club has a parade coming up in your town or community and would like to host the SPJST Float, give me a call. We are currently booking parades for all of 2014—even Christmas parades! Hosting the float is a lot of fun. A float driver from the Home Office will deliver and set up the float prior to the before and return the float to Temple after the parade. The lodge’s or youth club’s responsibility is to have smiling, waving riders on the float through the parade! It’s a great experience, and many lodges/youth clubs also combine a social with the parade. Give me a call or email for more details or to book the float. Lodge Refund Checks All lodge refund checks were mailed by the end of February. If your lodge has not received its check from the Home Office, please contact Financial Secretary Roy Vajdak at (800) 727-7578.
Correction The Step Up to the Plate Membership Program Update for February appeared in the March 12 Vestnik on page 4. Under the heading “SPJST Records 60 Referrals,” the name of Tyler Kaluza of Lodge 54, West was listed incorrectly. The Vestnik apologizes for this error. —SPJST—

District Six Cemetery Organization Invites All to Shiner Cemetery Marker Dedication this Saturday, March 29
Dear Members and Friends, In 2002, District Six Cemetery Organization was started by then District Six Director Michael Ahlstrom. The organization’s purpose was to maintain the three SPJST Cemeteries in
District Six. These are in Velehrad, Moravia, and Shiner. Since its creation, the District Six Cemetery Organization has maintained the cemeteries and obtained Texas Historical Commission recognition with
Texas Historic Cemetery Markers awarded to each of the cemeteries. Velehrad was dedicated in 2007; Moravia in 2013; and now, Shiner will be dedicated this March 29. David Bucek of Lodge 151, Wharton serves as president of the organization. Vice president is Vlasta Bartosh of Lodge 40, El CampoHillje; and Johnnie Hoffman of Lodge 184, Moulton serves as secretary/treasurer. Past secretary/treasurer was Eddie Vrana of Lodge 23, Moravia. Special thanks to Janie Bucek of Lodge 151, Wharton who has served as the historian for the organization. Janie has researched all of the history and submitted all of the information for the markers. Her article about this Saturday’s marker dedication in Shiner appears below:
The Texas Historical Commission (THC) has recognized SPJST Shiner Cemetery as a significant part of Texas history by awarding it an official Texas Historic Cemetery Marker. The designation honors SPJST Shiner Cemetery as an important and educational part of local history. A dedication ceremony to commemorate the event will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2014, at the SPJST Shiner Cemetery at 10 a.m. The cemetery is located in the complex of four Shiner Cemeteries on County Road 348. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and umbrellas (to shield the sun) to the dedication ceremony. SPJST Shiner Cemetery was established by SPJST Lodge Texasky Mir No. 10, Shiner in 1906. Lodge 10, Shiner was established as a charter lodge of SPJST, a fraternal benefit society, in 1897. The cemetery contains more than 240 burials. Frank Welfl who passed away on October 29, 1908, was the first individual buried in the cemetery. Home funeral services were very common during the first half of the
VӖSTNÍK
20th century for individuals buried in the SPJST Shiner Cemetery. Local and regional SPJST lay ministers provided many of the funeral services to its members in the Czech language. Czech names are found on the headstones, and 44 headstones are inscribed in the Czech language. None of the SPJST Lodge 10, Shiner charter members are buried in the cemetery, but several charter members from SPJST lodges outside of Shiner are buried here. This includes Jakub Vackar, charter member of Lodge No. 19, Velehrad, who was president of the Congregation of Freethinkers in Lavaca and Fayette Counties and C.S.P.S. Lodge Radhost No. 114, Schulenburg. Finally, several individuals who belonged to a branch of the České Národní Sdružení of Shiner which helped raise funds for the independence of Czechoslovakia are buried in the SPJST Shiner Cemetery. Over 35 veterans of World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War are buried in the SPJST Shiner Cemetery. Two of these veterans lost their lives during wartime. Tom Welfel was the only veteran who died during World War I. Frank Dolejsi lost his life in combat during World War II. The SPJST Shiner Cemetery is now maintained by the SPJST District Six Cemetery Organization. Once again, a very special thanks to each of the District Six Cemetery Organization officers and to founder Michael Ahlstrom for their dedication and efforts to achieve these historical recognitions. Please join me this Saturday, March 29 at this special dedication and historical marker presentation at the SPJST Shiner Cemetery at 10 a.m. Fraternally, Karen Kaspar, FIC, CFFM District Six Director —SPJST—

Meyer gave the treasurer’s report for Secretary/Treasurer Charles Wilson, who was not in attendance due to recent surgery. Vice President/Fraternal Activities Coordinator Ray Nelson gave his report. Irene Helgren came home; Artie Monson visited Irene and reported that Irene enjoyed the visit. Birthday for January was Charlie Anderson (22nd). Irene Vrabel gave the auditing committee report. She reported that Artie Monson and she had checked the checks to the records at the February trustee meeting the night prior, and she is currently reviewing contracts. Teresa Anderson, the third appointee of the auditing committee, was not notified in a timely fashion for the committee to meet to conduct the audit: she was notified the day of the planned meeting. Irene and Artie went ahead with the audit. State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Horak stated that the committee needs to schedule times to meet in advance. Members of the rules and regulations committee agreed to meet after the meeting to schedule a date for the committee meeting. This meeting was determined to be Thursday, March 6 at 6 p.m. Artie Monson gave the polka band booking report. Barefoot Becky plays on Sunday, February 23 from 3 to 7 p.m. Doors will open at 1 p.m. The kitchen will be open, and reservations will not be taken. Reporter Charlie Anderson stated that our donation to the Benchmark Program at SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm was received, and our bench had already been handcrafted. She reported on the specifics and measurements of the engraving. The lodge approved to engrave the bench with “SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin.”

President Meyer stated that Ms. Cannon at Elgin High School had previously cancelled a hall rental, but rescheduled the event for Thursday, April 3. The lodge will be donating the hall for the event. Trustee F.L. Meyer reported that Pure Country has a date open for Western Days on Saturday, June 28. The hall will already be donated for the class reunions, so he suggested to hold a free dance. Hopefully, it will draw a large crowd to the hall, as the annual tennis court dance charges a fee. The membership approved to pay the band $500, and they will play the standard Saturday time of 8 p.m. to 12 midnight. Youth Leader Joyce Nelson informed the lodge about the youth’s annual Easter egg hunt, scheduled for Saturday, April 19. In recent years, this event has been combined with the youth’s annual membership drive. The lodge approved donating $450 to the operating of the Easter egg hunt. Reporter Charlie Anderson brought up the contested issue of key distribution. At the January trustee meeting, trustees approved all officers having a key to the hall, with David and F.L. Meyer sharing a key. At that time, it was determined that more keys would need to be cut and distributed, yet Reporter Charlie Anderson has not received her keys. There was some confusion regarding who is responsible for making key arrangements. F.L. Meyer reported that keys could only be given out based on the key list, and that he was authorized to the key list. Then, he stated that Secretary/Treasurer Charles Wilson was in charge of the key list and that he could go pick up keys only if authorized by Charles. This matter caused major contention among President David Meyer, Trustee F.L. Meyer, and several members who hold no office, despite approval and the reported approval at the January meetings. State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Horak stated that the decision of key distribution had been made by the trustees, and Reporter Charlie Anderson needed to receive a key, as she was included on the list approved in January. Coincidentally, F.L. Meyer found a current, extra hall key in the bar for Reporter Charlie Anderson shortly after the meeting adjourned. Door prize winners were drawn, and the meeting was adjourned. Lodge 24, Cyclone plans Mother’s Day Barbecue
Lodge 24, Cyclone met on Monday night, March 10, 2014, in Flag Hall amid the newly-painted fields that will usher in new life of spring and furnish new money for the economy. The meeting was called to order by Margaret Mikeska at 7:10 p.m. After reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for our deceased and sick members, President Daniel Wilde took the chair for the meeting. It seems as though there is a wild animal problem at their home. President Wilde thanked everyone for their help at the State Domino Tournament and the Red Ravens dance. We are thankful for the attendance at the dance. There were no minutes of the last meeting as the secretary did not have time to assemble them. Brenda Maddux gave the bar report, and Linda Wilde have the treasurer’s report. Brian Vanicek gave a report on the SPJST Car Show that will be held in Seaton on May 3. The show will be in conjunction with Czech heritage day. They will have a kolache baking contest and a kolache eating contest. Lodge 47 will have the Red Ravens that night. Youth Leader Brenda Maddux gave the youth report. Their meeting had nine youth, two guests, and nine adults in attendance. They will join the youth group from St. Joseph’s on May 4 and help at our Mother’s Day event. On May 14, the youth will have a flag retirement ceremony and hamburger fundraiser. The time is 6:30 p.m. They cleaned out the youth closet and
hauled many items to the dump. Also, they found many pull tabs that apparently went back to 1991 when Shirley Ashcraft was youth leader. There were copious amounts. Ty Stock has a birthday on March 26. Under old business, Treasurer Linda Wilde advised that the insurance will be renewed with the same company for a price north of 6K. Daniel Wilde will get the supplies for the district meeting, and the lodge will donate the soft drinks for the youth club fundraiser.
New Business Wilbert Mikeska will secure three cords of wood for the Mother’s Day Barbecue on May 11. The price of the meal will be $9. Barbara Macek will get the kitchen supplies and will make 12 gallons of sauce. Daniel or Wilbert will order the 1,000 chicken halves. Bookings for the hall include District Two on March 16; Troy Athletic Boosters on March 29; Rogers High School prom - April 12; Reinders wedding - April 26; and May 3 - Cyclone-Marak Knights of Columbus Fundraiser. Lodge 24, Cyclone hosts domino tourney, dance
Flag Hall in Cyclone had an interesting and busy day on March 1, 2014, - the day that Lodge 24, Cyclone hosted the State Domino Tournament and had a well-attended dance at night. The tournament drew players from Holland, Cyclone, Temple, Ennis, Taylor, Granger, Fort Worth, Schwertner, and Seaton. We appreciate the trek that most had to get to the hall. Also, the kitchen crew did a yeoman job. The crew included Margaret Mikeska, Alice Hoelscher, Pauline Hoelscher, Barbara Macek, Woodrow Glen Chervenka, Daniel Wilde, Wilbert Mikeska, and Jason Hoelscher. Their chicken noodle soup and famous Flag Hall hamburgers were proof of the talents. The dance with the Red Ravens was well-attended as the band played with passion and enthusiasm. It seems as though we were suffering from cabin fever and needed an outlet, and the dance was perfect for the occasion. Lodge 24, Cyclone is on the way to being the home of polka and waltz music. The kitchen was busy, and the crew did an outstanding job. The lodge appreciates everybody who came for the tournament and for the dance. For the Lodge, Bobby Hoelscher, Reporter —SPJST—

Birthday Club Fort Worth Sisters of Friendship Club Lodge 88, Houston The meeting of the Friendship Club President Nell Stautberg opened the meeting at 11:20 p.m. Chaplain Helen Hegwood said an opening prayer and led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. The roll of membership was called, and we had nine members present. The minutes from the previous meeting were read and approved as read. President Nell gave a brief report about Founders Day and thanked those who worked at the pastry table. Next, she asked for a cake for the next meeting, and Almeida Bravenec will bring a cake. We decided to have fried chicken next month, and Helen Hegwood will get the fried chicken. The rest of us will bring covered dishes. Treasurer Vernell Foyt gave her report, and Chairlady Delores Pavlicek said she did not mail out any cards since there were no birthdays. Helen Hegwood said she has a bus reserved for us on April 23. We will discuss where we will go at the April meeting. Calcutta was won by Delores Pavlicek, Nell Stautberg, Vernell Foyt, and Willie Mae Pechacek. The meeting was then adjourned. We had a lunch of crab cakes and an assortment of salads. Fraternally yours, Bette Hurta, Secretary —SPJST—
was called to order by President Sharron Connelly on Wednesday, March 5, 2014. Everyone was welcomed. The Pledge of Allegiance was said by all. As the first order of business, Sharron read the obituary of Lucille Kret who passed away on February 26. A prayer was said for her, and the meeting was dedicated to her memory. Lucille was a very longtime member, and the last note I had from her, she was looking forward to coming to the meeting. She and her daughter, Linda, were roommates at a nursing home in Azle. She will be missed, and may her soul rest in peace. Our sympathy goes out to her family. Secretary Mary Ann Krivanek read the minutes from the last meeting. Treasurer Jo Ann Wilcox gave the financial report. Both were approved as presented. Sunshine Person Darlene Tompkins reported she sent a sympathy card to the family of Lucille. It was nice to have Marilyn Llewellyn back following her knee replacement, and she thanked everyone for all the cards she received. She reported her new knee is free of pain. It was reported that Mary Agnes Ward was bothered with arthritis and could not be with us. President Sharron thanked Shirley Martin, Rose Ann Spann, and Lola Taylor for all the Mardi Gras decora-

tions which were enjoyed by all. Sharron looked into her magic hat and Anna Johnson’s name came up, and she was crowned “Queen for the Day.” Anna is originally from New Orleans so it was most appropriate, and she enjoyed every minute. She got to sit in the special chair with robe, crown, and scepter in the middle of the room, and the rest of us had to get in a circle and do the chicken dance while Sharron wore her chicken mask. Then, there was a photo opportunity where everyone had their photo taken wearing hats, masks, beads, and all the other Mardi Gras apparel. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to March celebrants — Anna Marie Moncrief and Jo Ann Wilcox. May you have many more. Jo Ann received a cupcake with candle, and Anna Marie missed out as she was not present. While Sharron explained that we do not have assigned hostesses any more, she did ask those who are able to volunteer. Those with walkers and canes are excused. Mary Ann Kozel announced the Arts, Crafts and Trade Day Festival at SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth on March 21 and 22 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and invited everyone to attend. They will also serve food throughout the day. Margaret Sears was winner of the first 50-50 dollar game while Agnes Saldana was the second winner. Congratulations, ladies. Since this day was Ash Wednesday, Father Antony from St. Thomas Church brought ashes for those of us who had not already received them, said a prayer, and then led us in saying the blessing before our meal. We had a wonderful lunch with fried catfish and all the other side dishes which were all wonderful. After lunch, games were played, and a good time was had by all.
News We were all saddened about the death of Lucille Kret in February, and she had a beautiful service. Then on March 6, we lost another longtime member—Annie Snapka Sustala. For the past several years, she has been living in a nursing home. I still recall that Lucille, Annie, Nettie Naugle, Rose Romeo, Camille Bolcer, and Linda Horner always sat at the middle table at our meetings and enjoyed being together so much, and they always had such a good time. I stopped by at visitation. Annie looked beautiful, just like I always remember, and I still remember all the laughs she gave to us

all. Ladies, may your souls rest in peace. I spoke with Tracy Horn, and she was sorry to miss our last meeting but had a doctor’s appointment she could not miss. She is all excited that her grandson, the one who studied in Germany and now living in Massachusetts, is getting married. He is marrying a girl who was born in Switzerland, now lives in Massachusetts. They originally met in Germany. The wedding will be in Fort Worth before Easter, and all her family are coming as they live around Massachusetts. Tracy told me that Ella Greer is back home now, uses a walker, and is fearful of falling. Hopefully, she will continue to improve and be able to come to a meeting soon. Just come, Ella, you don’t have to bake one of those beautiful cakes. Then, Sunday my phone rang, and it was Annie Whitsell. We had a nice, long visit. She asked about everyone, and she still takes communion to some folks from church. She said her eyesight is not all that good, but she still can watch television. She said going to the movies is better as the screen is much larger. The last movie she and her daughter saw was “Son of God.” She said both her son and daughter have told her they each have an extra bedroom for her, but she would rather stay home,

Rose Cuba in Wichita Falls also called the other Sunday. She is doing well, uses a cane now as she was run into by a wheelchair. She sends greetings to all. The rain on Saturday was nice, cold again on Sunday, but a beautiful sunny day today. I don’t complain about the rain, but am getting tired of all the cold weather. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, April 2. I am looking forward to seeing all of you then. I guess our lunch will be fried chicken. So Until, Keep Smiling, Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm Hosts Holy Family JMJ Youth from Victoria
On March 8 and 9, 2014, SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm hosted the Holy Family JMJ Catholic Church youth group from Victoria, Texas. The group consisted of 26 people—mostly high school-aged, young adults. The Holy Family group has been visiting the Education and Nature Center for the past two years and is one of our consistent-user groups. Although the weather was not working with us, the group still managed to have a productive ropes session most of the day. We received a late day cool front that dropped the temperature pretty low that evening, and it brought the drizzly rain as well. The group toughed it out for as long as they could even
doing the power pole and vertical play pen during the height of the gusty winds. Once the weather became too much to be outside, the group went into the dining hall and continued to play indoor Gaga ball until late that night. Besides the weather being a factor for the group, we ended up having to fix their bus in the ENC barn before the group could depart for home. A huge thanks to Holy Family’s youth leaders, ENC staff, and the Cooper Farm neighbors for making this weekend event happen. Fraternally, John Hoelscher, Executive Director —SPJST—

Resolution of Sympathy
We, the members of Lodge Pokrok 84, Dallas, wish to express our deepest sympathy at the loss of our dearly departed sister, CAROLYN THERESA MAHDAK NEMEC, who was born Monday, April 24, 1916, in Ennis, Texas, and passed away Monday, March 3, 2014, in Dallas, Texas. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas for so many years that on her 96th birthday on April 24, 2012, she outlived her policy and was awarded a Carolyn Nemec certificate. Her parents were Czech immigrants John Mahdak from Ostrata, Czechoslovakia, and Frances Pavlicek Mahdak from Hrobice, Czechoslovakia, both deceased, and she grew up in a household immersed in Czech language, music, and tradition. Her father told her and her three sisters and five brothers Czech fairy tales, which she passed down to her children and grandchildren. Her favorite story was of the Hasterman, an ugly, evil Czech water sprite, covered with scales and slimy seaweed. Her father used to tell his children this story to scare them and keep them from swimming in the farm’s stock tank. Carolyn is also survived by her last youngest living brother Bernard Mahdak, wife Julie, and children Andy Mahdak and wife Jonye; and their son Zack and his wife Samantha, and children Autumn, Colton, and Makenzie; and son Houston; and daughter Laura Gosnell and her husband Jim and son Sean. Her sisters, Mary Mahdak Mikus, Frances Mahdak Crane, and Wilma Mahdak Gribbin, and her other four brothers John, Gerard, Lewis, and George, all Mahdaks, are deceased, but they have many surviving family members. Carolyn joined the Catholic Sokol in Ennis, Texas, around 1934 when she was 18 years old, where her older sisters Wilma and Frances had joined before her, and eventually became the women’s nacelnice, which is the Czech word for instructor. A group comprised primarily of Ennis Sokol gymnasts formed several beseda dance circles and went on to
perform at the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition held on the Texas State Fair grounds near downtown Dallas. The beseda is the national dance of the Czech people. She was always proud that her children and several of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren have all danced the beseda at the State Fair, also, in the Czech costumes called kroj she sewed for them, just as she sewed her own kroj in 1936, and sewed scores of other kroje since then for SPJST Lodge 84. The last one she made at age 96 was for one of her relatives for the Ennis National Polka Festival! At 19, Carolyn left the family farm in 1937 to live in Dallas and make a living for herself as a nanny until she married in 1940. She took up this occupation again years later after her own children had left the roost. Carolyn married George William Nemec, Sr. on Sunday, November 17, 1940, at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Ennis. She and George were blessed with five children, all born in Dallas, 10 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren, all of whom survive her: daughter Carole Annette Nemec Faraizl, husband Ray, their children Ray, Jr., Renee Oberle, her husband David, Sr., their daughter Nicole, and their son David, Jr. and his wife Brianna; and Faraizl children Adam and Mandy. George Wm. Nemec, Jr., and his daughter Alice and her partner Chris Barnes, and George’s son Chris. Daughter Margaret Holub, and her stepson Preston Peterson and his wife Kimberly, and sons Caleb, Jonah and Issac. Son Ed Nemec and his wife Krissi, and their daughter Delaney. Daughter Liz Opiela and her husband Roger. Liz’s son Sean and his wife Maggie and their daughters Chloe and Adelaide, and Liz’s daughter Carly and husband Rob Acox and their sons Xander and Sam. Carolyn’s husband George worked as a skilled floor mechanic for Blue Diamond and Ed Morgan and sons for many years and preceded her in death on May 6, 1971. Carolyn also has numerous other nieces, nephews, friends, cousins, and other relatives in both the United States and the Czech Republic that have survived her. While her children were in grade school, Carolyn excelled as a homemaker and volunteer. She served as a Blue Bird Leader and Camp Fire Guardian for five years at Holy Trinity Catholic School in Dallas where she was also in the Mother’s Club and on the Telephone Committee from the
VӖSTNÍK
1940s to the 1960s. During the time the family lived in Holy Trinity Parish and later St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, both in Dallas, she was active in both of their Women’s Altar Societies. She had taken pride in being a member of the Catholic Daughters since 1964, and was honored to receive her 45year pin from the organization several years ago. She was also a leader for SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas Teen and Junior Youth Clubs for many years. She was a member of Lodge 84 since 1947. She also found time along the way to take on jobs as a babysitter and as an employee of Frontier Stamps, where she received her 10-year pin, and after that, as an S&H Green Stamp employee, where she became the store’s floor manager. Carolyn’s hand-sewn costumes always won prizes when she was a young girl growing up in Ennis, and also the ones she sewed for her children in grade school and in the SPJST productions, and, while Carolyn’s oldest daughter Carole was attending Ursuline Academy High School, she made all her costumes for the stage productions held there each of the four years. Also, while her daughter Margaret attended Bishop Lynch High School, Carolyn helped Margaret design and sew 35 costumes for the production of the musical, “The King and I,” in which Margaret also played a leading role. Carolyn used to help her youngest daughter Liz design and sew costumes for the Mardi Gras in Jefferson, Texas, where Liz designed and built her own floats for the last 25 years. Since 1991, Carolyn had enjoyed being an active member of the Dallas Krouzek - Circle of Czech Women, and she had also been a member of the Ennis Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas for many years, keeping her Czech roots alive in Texas. Carolyn had always been a great Czech cook and an avid, accomplished gardener, tending her beautiful flower gardens at all three of the houses she lived in since she was married, and loved to propagate all types of plants. But her favorites were her irises and roses. She really liked mowing her own lawn, too, until she was 89 when her children took over that duty for her! She loved teaching her children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren how to cook all kinds of delicious dishes, especially Czech ones like her traditional Czech pork roast, sauerkraut, and dumplings, and her apple strudel and mouth-watering kolaches. She always had many funny
VӖSTNÍK
stories to tell. Over the years, she had traveled extensively around the country and outside of the United States with her children. Of all her excursions, the trips she enjoyed the most were the two tours she made to Czechoslovakia in 1979 and in 1983 to visit relatives when the nation was still cloaked behind the Iron Curtain and under Communist rule. Her 2001 tour there, when she was 85, was made with her daughter Carole and Carole’s son Adam and marked the last time she would visit her Czech relatives there in person. Carolyn’s daughter Carole compiled over 7,000 photos from her 97 years into 11 archival picture albums, six of which have “picture proof positive” chronicling all these events from her life. We’d like to conclude with an except from her favorite poem, “November,” by Alice Cary, which young Carolyn memorized while attending grade school in Ennis, but could still recite from memory after all these years. The leaves are fading and falling; The winds are rough and wild; The birds have ceased their calling But let me tell you, my child, Though day by day, as it closes Doth darker and colder grow, The roots of the bright red roses Will keep alive under the snow. And when the winter is over, The boughs will get new leaves, The quail come back to the clover, And the swallow back to the eaves.
Rest in God’s peace, Mom – you deserve it. May our departed sister rest in eternal peace. Resolution Committee Justine Yeager Cheryl Petr —SPJST—

District Two youth participate in spring meeting
The District Two Spring Meeting held at Lodge 24, Cyclone on Sunday March 16, 2014, was a fun-filled day for our youth. It was great to see so many in attendance. We began before lunch with practicing beseda and several new dancers. These youth are unbelievable. By the time the practice was over, they were performing as pros. I am so proud of you. Thanks to all who came to the practice and to those who helped out. The meeting began at 2 p.m. with Flag Bearers Brooke Newsom and
Kayla Wuensche, both of Lodge 48, Beyersville, presenting the flags. The youth were dismissed to the youth room with Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Leader Brenda Maddux and other helpful leaders Amber Bartek, Connie Voigt along with Shirley Hoelscher and Charlie Mitchan. Everyone loved playing Pictionary. The good thing about the quiet game I suggested were hugs for me and golden coins for the youth. Anyone want to guess how long the quiet game lasted? Seconds, but it was worth the fun and excitement.
Silent Auction The District Two Youth Club once again had a silent auction. We thank

Dear Vestnik Readers, I am in the fourth grade. My teacher is Ms. Zhanel. I am in UIL Ready Writing, student council, Encore Choir, Sokol Gymnastics Level 3, and SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club. Lodge 25, Ennis Youth April Dvorak Shares School, Community Activities and Fun
Dear Wonderful People Who Take Time Out of Your Day to Read My Letter, I’ve been quite busy lately. I don’t even know where to start. So much excitement has been happening lately. Let’s see, I went to band banquet. I’ve been getting ready for Youth Achievement Day. I competed in the solo and ensemble contest. I went to Czechfest . . . and so much more. First, let me tell you about band banquet. I wore a short, black dress with diamonds on the top. It had little tassels on the bottom that shook every time I moved, and I wore tall, silver, shiny shoes. I felt like a princess. Remember the really, really, pretty District Three Queen Reagan Langer? Well, her mom, Dana, did my hair and makeup, and I felt flawless. I had so much fun at band banquet with all of my friends, and I can’t wait until next year. Soon after band banquet, I had solo and ensemble contest. I play bass clarinet as y’all know, and my solo was called “Romance and Troika.” It was a mixture of smooth, romantic music and an upbeat polka. It sounded quite exquisite if I do say so myself. For my ensemble, I played with the woodwind section, and we played a piece called “Rondu.” (I probably misspelled that, so excuse my spelling.) On our ensemble, we made a “1—Outstanding” rating, and on my solo, I was rated with a “1—Outstanding,” also. That is the highest rating you could possibly get, so I was pretty proud of myself. The same day as solo and ensemble was the one and only, genuine Czechfest. As soon as solo and ensemble was over, I rushed home, took a few Advils, changed into my gorgeous Czech costume, put on my dancing boots, and went to church. You have to have God before you polka
your prdel off! At church, I got a great surprise. I saw our district youth leaders Lynda and Momma Bessie. After talking to them for a while, we headed off to Czechfest. I can honestly say, I waltzed across Texas, polka’d the night away, and partied all night long. I was surrounded by the most wonderful people at such a wonderful place. I can’t wait until next year. After Czechfest, I made my way to the SPJST District Three Lock-In. It was so much fun. I got to see all of my District Three friends—Lynda, Momma Bessie, David, and Melanie. We made fun crafts, and the food was so heavenly. We danced around, had fun, and developed a closer bond with our SPJST family. The last thing I would like to tell you about is cheer. As you know, I’m a junior high cheerleader. Recently, I tried out for high school cheer. It turns out . . . I made it. I’m a high school cheerleader! I get to spend another great, fabulous year with my best friends. I’m a high school cheerleader! I still can’t believe it! I remember when I was little looking at the high school cheerleaders and thinking, “I want to be just like them one day,” and that little voice in the back of my mind was telling me I would never be one. Well, it turns out that I am a high school cheerleader. I hope to inspire little girls just like I got inspired when I was little. This year shall be most definitely an action-packed year, and I couldn’t ask for better people to spend it with. There’s good, there’s better, and then there’s us. Let’s go, Lions (: As you can conclude, these past couple weeks have been a thrill. I can’t wait for LIT camp, YAD, and camp. I’m so excited that I get to be an LIT this year and run for queen! Anyway, I’ll try to write another letter pretty soon. Until next time! You’re Polka Dancin’ Cheerleader, April Dvorak, age 13 —SPJST—

to see the Texas Czech Genealogical Society’s Czech Veterans’ Wall of Honor and the Pioneer Room. There were many familiar names, and we were able to identify some relatives along with friends’ names from District Four. The uniforms, weapons, books, pictures, and many bits of information given to us by Merlene impressed us all! Due to time constraints, we had to cut our tour short, but many expressed interest in coming back. Thank you, Merlene, for your time and patience with our group. Next, we walked two blocks to the Czech Heritage Museum where we were met by Mr. Ken Lange. Mr. Lange started our tour with a short movie about the Czech immigrants coming from Czechoslovakia which was very informative. In the next room, we visited an original homestead—no electricity, no running water . . . it was hard to imagine no electronics for many! We also saw an old wood burning stove, a black wash kettle, irons that were heated on the wood burning stove, old school desks, and so much more. We then went to Dr. J.J. Shiller’s office. Dr. Shiller had his practice in Rowena until he retired at the age of 92. Along with many of his medical instruments, we saw his original saddle bags that he carried with him on his horse as he made house calls in the Rowena area. Because of the hard times, Dr. Shiller was often paid with produce that the people had raised on the farm—eggs, vegetables, milk, and butter, as there was very little money to spare. On rare occasions, he would receive some money from the patients. Quite different from today’s medical field! We also saw some hand puppets that came from Czechoslovakia, carved by two brothers that used them to earn a living once they arrived in America. Very unique! The girls were interested in the old wedding dresses that were on display. There were musical instruments, an old pump organ, and an old Bible. Here, too, we were rushed because we were trying to see so much in one day, but we enjoyed everything that we did get to see. Thank you, Mr. Lange, for your time spent with our group! It was lunchtime, and we were ready! Plans were to picnic in the park, but the weather had different plans for us so we had our “picnic” in-
side the Home Office. Everyone was ready and did a bit of visiting while there. Once we finished eating and cleaned our mess, we were off to the Railroad and Heritage Museum, also in downtown Temple. Once there, we were greeted by Cynthia Coyle, who was our guide. Our first adventure was the “pump” cars. Due to the size of our group, we were teamed into groups of four and got on the cars. We pumped, racing our way around the tracks; this was fun for everyone, but not as easy as it looked! We also found out this takes teamwork. The group would like to go back and do this again. We toured a caboose and an engine. Ms. Coyle explained the purpose of the caboose and why we do not see many today. Everyone climbed into the engine and got to ring the bell before exiting. The museum is located next to an active railroad yard, and while we were there, several trains passed by. They were very noisy and fitting! We then went inside the Santa Fe Depot, which was completed in 1911, which houses the museum. We explored the history of the railroad. The museum was hosting a display of model trains which was really neat to see. We all enjoyed the display that we could push a button to see what the model train would do. Yes, they do have a gift shop that we all visited and most of us came out with a souvenir! A look at my watch, and it was 2:30 p.m.—time to head back home. Gosh, what a busy day—full of fun and education! Due to trying to stay on schedule, we did not get to spend as much time at either of the museums as we would have liked, but we can go back. Thank you to each of our guides, Merlene, Ken, and Cynthia, for sharing your knowledge. We did enjoy it. Also, thank you to each youth member and to the parents—what a well-mannered and well-behaved group! I’m so proud to say you are members of SPJST District Four Youth Clubs! In closing, I would like to use a quote from one of our youth . . . “It’s always an adventure to go somewhere with Beverly!” Thanks, Sutton! TCGS offers Early Czech Schools
Early Czech Schools Volumes I and II . . . So much information it took two volumes to contain all of it. Early Czech Schools, published by Texas Czech Genealogical Society, is b e i n g m a d e available for purchase. Contained inside the covers are more than 600 pages along with 2,900-plus surnames. With the number of Czech schools attended by our ancestors, the contents of this set provides many hours of reading and research possibilities. Adding to the enjoyment are over 600 photos, many of which identify students and their classmates. Covering more than 100 Czech schools dating from the 1800s through almost the mid-1900s, TCGS has strived to make the photos large enough for facial recognition without being overly large making for extra page count. In addition to the early schools in rural Czech communities, photos and articles on the early Czech Clubs at Texas A&M, University of Houston, Rogers High School, Temple College and The University of Texas are also included. This unique set begins with information of Czech educators in the Fatherland, followed by Texas Czech Educators and Teachers. The soft-bound set is available for $55 plus $10 shipping/handling and can be purchased by sending your check made out to TCGS to Bill Hodon, 1201 Nimbus Drive, Pflugerville, Texas 78660. “Immigrant Languages in Contact: The Case of Texas Czech” set for April 7
“Immigrant Languages in Contact: The Case of Texas Czech,” a talk by Dr. Lida Cope, will be presented Monday April 7, 2014, at BUR 231 at the University of Texas in Austin. The Texas Czech Legacy Project’s (TCLP) ultimate goal is to document and preserve the dying Texas Czech dialect and make available various artifacts representing the Texas Czech community’s linguistic and ethno-cultural heritage. This presentation will introduce the digital open-access repository and demonstration website; and discuss the effects of cross-linguistically induced language change in a historic immigrant language community, as well as the development of the so-called “Texas Czech Standard.” We will review major morphological, syntactic, and discourse features of Texas Czech and listen to sample recordings from Texas Czech speakers. The presentation will end with some of the puzzles the TCLP team has dealt with in trying to develop a transcription guide for a reduced language mixing standard and vernacular, often archaic, features. Lida Cope is an Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, and an external research associate with the Department for Slavic and Eurasian Studies at UT Austin. A native of the Czech Republic, she has academic degrees from Palack´y University (Olomouc, Czech Republic) and the University of Arizona at Tucson. The event is co-sponsored by the Department of Germanic Studies and presented by the Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. —SPJST—

• Letters to Bibbie •
This article is one of a series of “Letters to Bibbie, â€? written by Ivo Marek to his distant relative Vickie (Bibbie) Cooper of Granger, Texas. Ivo and his parents live in ChoceĹˆ, Czech Republic. Ivo is an engineer by profession and an accomplished weaver and textile artist. In addition, his hobbies are gardening, cooking, and fine-tuning his English.
Dear Bibbie, I will write you on an unusual theme today. I will write about a litter sorting in CR. I read following information from company EKO-KOM in these days. I quote after firm EKOCOM on the internet: “8.88 mi2 of nature was saved thanks to the litter sorting in the last year. It reaches so that 71 percent of all the production of wrapped materials were recycled and again utilized! The recycled material substituted for production of new products so not to exploit natural resources. So throve to sink of nature environment loading. Thanks to the litter sorting, there is about 1,228,880 less short tons CO2 in atmosphere. It makes sense, sort the litter! is an advertising slogan for litter sorting in Bohemia. In all the CR, there are 229,021 colored containers (bins) for the sorted litter. Sorting is so for citizens still more comfort. The nearest collection place, so called container nest, is on average only 111.5 yards. Thanks to that, 99 percent inhabitants have a possibility to sort, and these are in 6,025 settlements of all the CR. 70 percent people actively use this possibility to sort the litter. them throve to recycled and again utilized 71 percent of all wraps that were given on the market last year. “We thank you! the company EKOKOM sends to all citizens sorting the litter. The average distance to containers for sorted litter sinks every year. Before five years, Bohemians had location of bins in average 129 yards, now it is only 111.5 yards. It is enough for Czechs in average only 2 minutes of free walking to the colored vessels. The number of litter sorting containers on the streets is still growing. There are 229,021 collection vessels at this time. 10.5 inhabitants’ millions now have the possibility to sort thanks to that.

Really, everybody can sort now! People, who sort the litter, do not belong to a minority; on the contrary! Seventy percent of inhabitants of the Czech Republic actively sort the litter, what is a growth about 14 percent in last 10 years. Afterwards, European Statistic Bureau Eurostat data, the Czech Republic holds the top in measure of recycling wrap litters. Every

Bohemian household sorted on an average 100 pounds of paper, 53 pounds of plastics, and 62 pounds of a glass in the past year. It throve so recycle together 71 percent of total production of wrapped materials. And, thanks to that, Bohemians left the majority of European countries behind. 1,800,000 trees were not idle cut in a forest right thanks to sorting more than 473,986 tons of paper. Also, one ton of the sorted paper can save more than 2 tons of a wood. The Bohemian household in past year sorted 100 pounds of paper and total measure of recycled paper wraps reached 85 percent. Thanks to that, for example, newspaper prints on the 98 percent recycled paper. And it has a useful effect! Fraternally, Ivo —SPJST—

Expressions of Gratitude
“Homey” Environment
“Some brief reflections of our life at S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living Community”
The facility has a “homey” environment, yet it is decorated with class. We like it for my mother because we are confidant she is in a secure and safe place. She gets three nourishing meals per day, gets her medication given at the right times, has her housekeeping taken care of weekly, can go to church, beauty shop, and exercise right there in the facility. There are so many activities for our mom in the facility as well as out and about taking the “SPJST Bus” for outings. Sometimes she must pick and choose because there is more to do than time allows. From the director to receptionist, volunteers, cooking staff, nurse, maintenance, and housekeepers, etc. everyone is so friendly and gets to know each resident by name. The thing we like most though is that the family is encouraged to participate in activities and enjoy meals with your family member. It is great, too, that my sister from out of town is allowed to spend the night when she comes for a visit. We especially like the common areas we can reserve when many of us visit at the same time. If you are looking for a place for a loved one where you don’t have to worry about them, the S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living in Taylor is the place you are looking for. —Charlotte S. Albert of Thrall, Texas (Daughter of resident Arlene Schneider)
Friendly Neighbors and Good Friends
I can recommend S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living as a good place to live for several good reasons. You have your own apartment, furnished with your own things. There are personal assistants to assist you with what you need. The staff will assist you with medication, if needed. We have tasty and healthy full meals— three a day. We have our choice of games and crafts, also a variety of entertainment and church activities. Our neighbors are friendly, and we make good friends. —Abby Johnson, Resident
Many Advantages 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Small table dining. My two-room single person suite with bath. Furnishings and pictures from home. Plenty of plugs for sound system. The cleaning of apartments plus complimentary laundry. 6. Medicines managed. I do not have to schedule my own. 7. Meals are delicious. I have to guard against overeating.
These are just a few of the advantages . . . there are many more! —J. Noble Atkins, Resident
Beautiful Place and the Staff is Great
My name is Ruby Rakes. My husband Clarence and I have been married for 63 years. We came to S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living in March 2012. We moved here from Dumas, Texas, a small town north of Amarillo in the Panhandle. Our reason for moving here is that our daughter and her husband live here in Taylor, and we needed to be near them. We also have some of our grandchildren and great-grandchildren that are in the area, too. We feel fortunate to be living in such a beautiful place. The staff is great, and they are very helpful in making everything pleasant. We find the staff and residents friendly and always willing to help. We enjoy the church services, musical entertainment, and bingo. There is always some kind of entertainment we can choose to attend. We would recommend S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living to anyone. —Clarence and Ruby Rakes, Residents
Attentive Care; Close-Knit, Family-Oriented
I can’t say enough about what a blessing it is for my father to live at S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living in Taylor. The staff is caring, dedicated, reliable, and professional. They take a personal interest in each of the residents and make everyone feel welcome. They offer physical fitness and social activities that are so important in maintaining the well-being of the residents. It has been my experience and observation that the staff provides the attentive care that enables my father to “feel at home.” It gives my family and I great peace of mind knowing that he is safe, happy, and well-cared for in a close-knit family-oriented community. —Theresa Hajda (Daughter of resident V.J. Hajda)
Lots of Entertainment and Fun
I moved to Taylor when my son and his wife found this place this wonderful place. Everyone here is so friendly and nice. Staff, employees, and residents are so willing and able to help in so many ways. There are so many fun things to do here. Today, we visited the Blanton Museum of Art down at the University of Texas. It was wonderful. There is always something to do, exercise everyday in the week, and very well-attended. Lots of entertainment, bus trips, and more fun! I have used the exercise since I arrived, and it has certainly helped me physically. We have games, arts and crafts, painting, and more. —Ann Geil, Resident
