Nonat Mary Steinman of Lodge 154, Fort Worth writes, “I want to get the word out about a website that I found. It is www.nonatsalve.com. I have ordered eight tins for my family and myself. I hope it is like the old stuff Grandma and Mom used.” Mary also says that her sister Donna Rose Parker says, “‘It will suck a cow out of a deep well’ . . . as Grandpa Milan always said. No infection goes on for long with Nonat Salve on it!” The Nonat website states that Nonat had its beginning in what is now the Czech Republic. The formula was brought to this country in 1899, by a lady who obtained it from a doctor there. She settled in Ohio and then in California where it was last produced and marketed in the 1950s. It had a definite market amongst East Europeans. The name Nonat was an intriguing name as the lady was of Catholic faith and had a devotion to St. Anthony. Nonat is a jumble of the word Anton.
One of the popular features was the drawing out of slivers. It originally came in a small hard tube shape. To soften it, the salve had to be heated with a small flame and then spread on the area. It is currently produced in a soft salve ointment. The website states: “Nonat is a one-of-a-kind ointment with all natural ingredients, so parents can feel completely confident using Nonat as a healing agent for their precious little ones who have a propensity for getting into things such as thorny bushes, poison oak and splintery wooded places. But Nonat isn’t just for children. Anyone and everyone can benefit from its healing powers and the versatility of ailments it treats.” For more information, visit www.nonatsalve.com or see Nonat’s ad in the April 17, 2013, issue of the Vestnik.

Minutes of the February 27, 2014 Special Meeting of the Supreme Lodge SPJST held at the Home Office, Temple, Texas
PRESIDING The meeting was called to order by Supreme Lodge Donnie Victorick on February 27, 2014, at 8 a.m.
ATTENDING Supreme Lodge—President Brian Vanicek; Vice President Gene McBride; Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska; Chairman Donnie Victorick - District One; Jesse Pospisil - District Two; Johnnie Krizan - District Three; Billy Rollwitz - District Four; Larry W. Pflughaupt - District Five (participated by conference phone); Karen Kaspar - District Six; and Vice Chairman Robert J. Bayer - District Seven. Officer—Financial Secretary Roy Vajdak. Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny and Human Resource Administrator Debbie Klinkovsky were present at the opening of the meeting.
OPENING OF MEETING The meeting was opened by Supreme Lodge Chairman Victorick with a welcome and recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was observed in respect to our departed members and in honor of our armed forces. SecretaryTreasurer Mikeska then led the Supreme Lodge in prayer.
PURPOSE OF MEETING Vice President McBride has recently informed the Supreme Lodge Officers that he is retiring from the position of Supreme Lodge Vice President and will leave office on March 28, 2014. The purpose of the meeting is:
1. To discuss recommendations relating to the timetable and interview process that will be used to fill the unexpired term of the Supreme Lodge Vice President. The term that is to be filled runs through July 31, 2016. 2. Financial Secretary Vajdak will review an item related to bonus commissions approved by the Supreme Lodge in 2007. This bonus payment was not provided for in either the 2014 or 2015 budget.
3. Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska will present information that is relevant to the construction of SPJST’s Enterprise Risk Management Plan. Director and Vice Chairman Bayer read the following opening statement:
“For the second time [sic] in the history of SPJST, we are here to start the process of appointing an officer of the SPJST. We have to make a decision that none of us really want to make, but we have to make a business decision, a sound business decision, I said a sound business decision. I do not think that we should do anything rash, rushing or drastic now. We really have until the convention to hire a person for this position.
“I do not think that we need an interim Vice President at this time. We can appoint one at the April Supreme Lodge meeting. I think that the three remaining officers could handle until the April Supreme Lodge meeting.
“I don’t think that any one officer should be in charge of the Insurance Department. Let it be a joint affair until April Supreme Lodge Meeting.
“We must set aside all of our personal feelings. Your personal feelings might cause you to make a rash decision.”
President Vanicek read the guidelines and the by-laws pertaining to the position of Vice President and reviewed suggested timelines for filling the vacancy in the position of Vice President.
Vice President Gene McBride will vacate the office effective Friday, March 28

Our regulators, the Department of Insurance; the NAIC; our rating agency A.M. Best; our auditors and insurers providing insurance coverage all have cited the need for a formal ERM Policy. He stated the ERM Policy documents articulate good management practices. He referred to a handout defining ERM as the process of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling the activities of our organization in order to minimize the effects of risk on an organization’s capital and earnings. ERM broadly extends to financial, strategic, operational and other risks.
Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reported that work has been in progress for several months and included revision and formulation of our Investment Policy Statement (IPS) to complement our ERM Policy. The IPS will become a significant portion of our ERM Policy, and it is now complete. The ERM Policy document is being finalized with the assistance of Consultant Theron Holloday and interaction of the Supreme Lodge Officers. Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reported the documents and information represents what has been done to date. The ERM Policy Statement provides for four committees. The committees and members appointed to serve are:
ENTERPRISE RISK MANAGEMENT (ERM) COMMITTEE Brian Vanicek, Donnie Victorick, Bob Bayer, Roy Vajdak, Leonard Mikeska

Underwriting Risk Committee— Gene McBride, Cynthia Hutka, Johnnie Krizan, Billy Rollwitz, Melanie Zavodny
Operational Risk Committee— Roy Vajdak, Larry W. Pflughaupt, Karen Kaspar, Jesse Pospisil, Debbie Klinkovsky After due deliberation, Director Pospisil moved that the work on the ERM Policy be affirmed. Director Kaspar seconded the motion, and the motion carried unanimously. The subcommittees will meet prior to adjournment of the meeting.
GUARANTEED INTEREST RATES Financial Secretary Vajdak reported that careful audit revealed a few annuity plan codes dating back to 2005 where the admin system recorded guaranteed rate and the payout rate were not in agreement. Any annuity that may have received credit for less than the guaranteed rate it should have received will be corrected to receive the proper credit. Financial Secretary Vajdak asked the Supreme Lodge to retroactively adopt the correct guaranteed interest rates. Director Pflughaupt moved that the Supreme Lodge retroactively adopt these guaranteed interest rates, and Director Pospisil seconded the motion and the motion carried unanimously.
FLEXIBLE ANNUITY PLANS FOR ANYONE AGED 71 AND ABOVE The Supreme Lodge previously adopted a special provision on commission paid on an annuity sold to an individual over age 71. The provision allows payment of 1 percent commission on issue and 2 percent after 24 months.
Financial Secretary Vajdak reported that agents continue to sell flexible Non-IRA annuities to those aged 71 and above. Reprogramming the USSI admin system to accommodate the new commission structure has proven to be futile due to the complexities of the varying commission payments and the possibilities of both additions and withdrawals to the annuity.
Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska moved that we offer flexible Non-IRA annuities to those aged 71 and above. The commission structure would be a 1 percent payment on the initial contribution and 2 percent 24 months later and that no commission payments would be made on future contributions to the flexible Non-IRA annuity. The motion provides that the matter is to be open for further study. Director Bayer seconded the motion, and the motion carried with seven in favor and three opposed. Voting in favor: President Vanicek, Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska, Director Victorick, Director Pospisil, Director Rollwitz, Director Pflughaupt, and Director Bayer. Voting in opposition: Vice President McBride, Director Krizan and Director Kaspar. Recess for lunch was taken from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
ERM SUB-COMMITTEES MEET Meeting recessed to allow time for the ERM subcommittees to meet.
CONCLUSION OF MEETING
President Vanicek announced a meeting concerning the SPJST Foundation meeting to begin at 8 a.m. on April 14, and the A.M. Best conference is at 1 p.m. on April 17, 2014.

Lodge 84, Dallas celebrates 104th anniversary
Dear Readers, Lodge 84, Dallas celebrated its 104th anniversary on Sunday, March 16, 2014. A good time was had by all who attended. President Yeager welcomed everyone before a motion was made to suspend the reading of minutes and old and new business until next month so that we could move on with the program. President Yeager asked Sunshine Lady JoAnn Manak to read her report so we could remember those members. Sympathy cards were sent to families of Brother Adolph Salac, Brother C.J. Olson, Sister Carol Nemec, and the family of C.H. Gannon. A thinking of you card was sent to Sister Pauline Prachyl and Brother Donald Petr, who have been under the weather. Sister Cherri Petr then presented 50-year membership pins to recipients John, Paul, and Thomas Athas.
Thanks! After the recitation of the lunch blessing by Lodge 84 Queen Elisabeth Cowan, everyone dined on a traditional spaghetti dinner and a variety of delicious desserts. Thank you to Sisters Vicki Sims, Kelly Tucker, Cherri Petr, and Barbara Kopecky Gannon for your tireless work in the kitchen to make sure everything went smoothly. Thank you to The Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra for the lovely mealtime musical entertainment. Additionally, a big thank you to the youth club for providing a short program in honor of the anniversary. Next Meeting Our next monthly meeting will be held on Monday, April 21 at 6:30 p.m. Mark your calendars so you can attend! Fraternally, Anne Scott Cowan Reporter —SPJST—

Lodge 92 Fort Worth hosts successful arts, crafts fair
Happy birthday to March birthday celebrants Linda Ann Belote, John Lawrence Pelzel, Jr., Vivian Read Prochaska, John David Wruble, and Jon Paprskar. The arts and crafts fair held March 21 and 22 was a success. The vendors who participated were very pleased and look forward to next year’s event. Our sign out front brought in many people and generated new interest for possible rentals. We received a few calls just inquiring about renting the hall. There were others who came in just to see our hall and wanted to know more about us. Thank you to all who came out and helped make this a success. Joyce Tesar is on the mend after being in the hospital for treatment for shingles, and Helen Kubala is recovering from her fall. President Gordon Hubenak was hospitalized for a possible heart attack, but thankfully, it was only a sprained muscle from an earlier fall. We welcomed back Vice President Gloria Farek after her hospital stay. Gloria was presented her plaque as Lodge 92 Fraternalist of the Year for 2013. Thank you to Lisa Juran for getting the refrigerator repaired, and thank you to the Ladies Circle for the new ceiling fans in the hall. Friday night ballroom dancing resumes April 18 and will continue on
the third Friday of each month from 8 to 11 p.m. Russ Dorsey will be playing on the 18th. Country and western dancing will be from 3 to 7 p.m. on the first Sunday of the month with Randy and the Roadhouse Band. Admission for the country and western dances is $6, and Friday night dance admission is $10.
Next Meeting—April 13 Our next meeting is April 13, and this will be our annual Easter egg hunt. So bring out your family and friends for a fun afternoon. We will have a meal that day, and we ask everyone to bring a dessert to serve with the meal.

Lodge 172 Pasadena reports on March meeting
The Sunday, March 24, 2014, meeting of Lodge 172, Pasadena was called to order at 1 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited followed by a moment of silence for the sick and departed and a prayer before the meal. The meeting was adjourned. After the meal and socializing, the meeting reconvened at 2 p.m. President Robert Mayfield asked Recording Secretary Jerry Dressler to call roll. Everyone was present except Trustee Raymond Holub. There were no new members or guests in attendance. We had a total of eight members in attendance. With no corrections needed, both the regular and executive meeting minutes were approved as read. President Robert Mayfield asked the recording secretary to read any correspondence he may had received. Robert stated that neither one had received correspondence. First Vice President/Fraternal Activities Coordinator Jo Mayfield told the members about the letter she had received from FAC Tammy Martinez telling her about the changes that have been made on the FAC reports. Jo told them that she would need all the help from the members she could get to be able to send in a good report. Jo also told the members that she was trying to find a good speaker for the next meeting. Financial Secretary Helen Schewe told us she received a statement from the Home Office that said we had 10 terminations and two death notices. No cards were sent out this month. Entertainment Chairman Jo Mayfield told everyone that we had a very good variety dance on Saturday night. It was one of the best variety dances we had in a long time. Treasurer Jerry Dressler explained the finance report to the members. President Mayfield said that we had 67 members with birthdays in April even though none of members with April birthdays were in attendance. We still wished them a happy birthday. Robert thanked Jerry Dressler for helping around the lodge hall and Ed Schewe for trimming the hedge in front of the hall. President Mayfield told everyone that the next workday and executive meeting would be Monday, April 7 at 2 p.m., and the next regular meeting would be Sunday, April 27 at 1 p.m.

Ennis Sewing Circle

Ennis Sewing Circle met on March 13, 2014. Ann Clagett and I arrived at 8 a.m. I want to send a special thank you to Ann. She is such a great, helpful, special person. We set up the tables and chairs and wiped all the tables and countertops. By then, others started arriving. We stretched Dorothy Valek’s quilt top made by her grandmother Adamcik. We had quilters all around – Ann, Pat, Irene, Dolores, Dorothy Prachyl, Dorothy J., Georgia Holy, Martha, and Victoria. I hope I didn’t miss any one. Thank you, all quilters. At 10:30 a.m., President Irene started her workshop. Ann brought her sewing machine, and Irene showed how to sew the squares and press the seams on each square. Dolores and Georgia Holy are doing a really good job. I am anxious to see their squares sewn together. By lunchtime, we had 22 members and two guests – Jerry and Joe. It was good to see Ella Mae and Jerry Zmolek. We have missed them. We

want to thank Jerry for taking out the trash. President Irene led us in grace then we all enjoyed a delicious lunch. Thank you to the set up and clean up crew. After lunch, President Irene called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and a moment of silence was held for Mildred Alexander, sister-in-law of Martha Ritchey in Brazoria, Texas, and Vlasta McCorvey. We all recited the “Our Father” for all our members. Secretary Dolores read the minutes of our last meeting, and Treasurer Dorothy Bobalek gave her report. Both were approved as read. Ginny read a funny story. I didn’t get the title, but we all enjoyed it. Ginny also told a story of her day delivering flowers with a little old man on Valentine’s Day. It was quite a story. He drove Ginny around all day. They didn’t get back to the flower shop till 7:30 p.m. that evening. I can’t tell it the way Ginny did so I will just say, it must have been quite a day for her. We were glad to have our Sunshine Lady Eleanora back. She announced our one and only birthday celebrant— Mary E. Zabojnik; she was not present so we didn’t get to sing. We hope Mary had a great birthday. Pat Fowler announced we will quilt for Eleanora in April; Dorothy J. in May; and Irene in June. In July, we will have an elephant sale and showand-tell. I don’t remember September and October, but I remember President Irene saying we filled up each month for this year - how great! The kitchen committee said we needed forks, napkins, and coffee cups. Libbie will purchase them at Sam’s in large quantities. President Irene talked and demonstrated the noodle-cutting strips of material by cutting the strips of material two and one-half inches wide. Next month, those who bring strips can swap with other members to match your color. We can swap for several months before we start our quilt tops. This is really a great idea. I don’t have any material so I will purchase some for cutting. President Irene thanked all for coming, for the food, and set up and clean up. She asked for everyone to help with putting up the tables and chairs. Thank you for that. Irene also said that we will quilt till 12 noon as most don’t return to quilting after lunch. That way, more will get quilted. President Irene also announced that
different members will start bringing their quilts from home for show-andtell. Ann and I will bring our quilts in April, and someone else the following month. Dorothy J. brought three lap quilts that she has made; she is really fast and does a beautiful job. I forgot to mention last month that I delivered our new membership address books to Bessie Laznovsky and Frances Vinkler. It is always so nice to see and visit with them. We could talk all day. I mailed Geraldine Zhanel her book; we hope she received it. Congratulations to Ginny Svehlak. She was our 50-50 dollar game winner. Dolores Vrana made a motion to adjourn the meeting. It was seconded by Ginny Svehlak.
Other News Congratulations to Pat Fowler’s grandson Justin Mraz. He and a group from Ennis school won third place at San Angelo Agricultural School competition; the group had made a trailer. He was the only seventh grader in the group. I have been reading in our Ennis paper all the things these kids make nowadays. It is really something. I’m waiting for some warm weather, not hot – just warm. Take care everyone, we hope to see you April 10. We will quilt, have lunch, meeting, and 50-50 dollar game. Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST—

Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth
There seems to be special celebrations held every day in March; sometimes two. There’s Peanut Butter Lovers’ Day, I Want You To Be Happy Day, National Potato Chip Day, and Saint Patrick’s Day — just to name a few! Oh yes, lest we forget the time change and March Madness. The time change we could do without. March Madness is all consuming for basketball fans and irritating for others. However, at my house, watching those young men and women display their talents and work so hard to achieve their goals is inspiring. It kind of makes you want to “fast-break” to get your bingo cards. The Ladies Circle March meeting took place on the 11th at SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth. No, we didn’t play basketball; we played bingo to our hearts’ content. But first, President Marlene Bass led the group in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. She welcomed our guests and newest member Smitty Wilbanks. Lorinda Manasco’s granddaughter, Aleesha Barrett, was helping out in the kitchen, and Cherish Ellsworth was there with Bessie and Garland. Estelle Hurtek had her two daughters, Claudette Cooper and Ann Hurtek Sammet, with her, and Christine Apperson had her sister, Wanda Moore, with her. All are welcome, and we take pleasure in having others join
in the fun. This day we had 59 members and guests. That’s 59 enjoying the activities! Vice President Theretta Praslicka gave an inspirational reading entitled, “When You Ask.” She then graced us with one of her special prayers. President Marlene commented on the passing of our longtime member Lucille Kret; she was always a regular when she felt well enough to come. Those of us who attended her funeral learned she was feisty and most of the time in charge according to her family’s memories. We enjoyed hearing some of the stories they shared. We will miss her, and we offer our sympathies to Linda Horner and the other Kret family members. It was also good to see Monalee Hattendorf in her spot playing and winning at bingo. Robyn Brownlee reported that she is hoping to bring her mother, Pauline, to the meeting in April. For those of you who can’t come: we miss you! Our thoughts and prayers go out to each of you. The business portion of our meeting included the reading and approval of minutes, financial report, and reminder that Treasurer Margaret Laymance is accepting payment of dues. Sherrie Kubala Watkins then reported on the installation of the new ceiling fans donated by the Circle. They look wonderful, and it is our hope that they will bring much comfort to those who come to the hall to dance. Remember, the first Sunday of each month is dancing. Beginning in April, ballroom

dancing will take place the third Friday of each month after that. Sherrie also announced that Gloria Farek was named Fraternalist of the Year for Lodge 92. Congratulations to Ms. Gloria on her wonderful honor. Sherrie also thanked Lisa Juran, as we all do, for the repair of the big refrigerator in the kitchen! Hostesses Lorinda Manasco, Hermina Cihacek, Pauline Morbitzer, Mary Ann Adcock, and Aleesha Barrett were thanked for their efforts in the kitchen. They worked hard to make sure each delicious dish was arranged perfectly, and judging from the spread, everyone who came brought a dish. So did we have 59 different offerings? Did anyone count? There was a lot of food to enjoy. JoAnn Wilcox was our lone birthday “girl” who was present. We serenaded her; however, we missed singing to our other birthday celebrants: Monica Willenburg, Judy Branton, and Willie Mae Becan who is a big 93 this year. Happy birthday to everyone on their special day. Door prizes revealed a beautiful spring towel, a book, money, candle, more money, beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers, bunny stack boxes, a plaque, wall art, decorative spoon rest, and jelly beans. As always, the winners were tickled that their names were called and thrilled with the prizes they received. After lunch was finished, March Madness Bingo began, and it appeared that everyone enjoyed themselves and had plenty to eat. Fraternally yours, Joan Simek Shropshire Secretary —SPJST—

Czech Heritage Museum series observes “Prague Spring”
The opening segment of SPJST and Czech Heritage Museum’s “All Things Czech” lecture series got off to a good start on March 20, 2014, with an evening reception and a program commemorating the events that led to the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia by Warsaw Pact nations. “Prague Spring is the term used for the brief period of time in 1968 when the government of Czechoslovakia led by Alexander Dubček sought to democratize the nation and lessen the stranglehold that Moscow had on the nation’s affairs,” says SPJST Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek, who led the evening’s discussion. “Prague Spring ended with a Soviet invasion,

the removal of Alexander Dubček as party leader, and an end to reform within Czechoslovakia.” Through words, images, and a short film, Vanicek traced the beginnings of Prague Spring to World War II and decisions that were made at the Yalta Conference for Czechoslovakia to come under the “sphere of Soviet influence.” “Any time you tell a story, you have to decide how far to go back. It’s that additional backgrounding that really brings texture and understanding to the topic at hand,” said Vanicek. “By going back 20 years, we are able to establish the political and social scene that gave inception to Prague Spring.” Jan Vaculik of SPJST Lodge 54, West immigrated to the United States in September 1968, just one month after Prague Spring ground to a halt. He offered a first-hand perspective of living under Communist oppression, stating that the real beneficiaries of
communism were a handful of officials who, while enjoying every pleasure of power, indulged in double speak to protect their positions. Vaculik went on to praise the Capitalist system for the rights of liberty and property that it affords the individual. Czech Heritage Museum President Jerry Milan of Fort Worth expressed his appreciation to attendees and encouraged them to come back. “I believe we touched a chord, and this series is destined to grow.” says Milan. “It was a chance to get together, socialize, and get some fresh insight into an important topic. I was pleased!”

Early Czech Schools available now
Did your loved ones live in the Ford’s Prairie Community? If they attended the Ford’s Prairie School in 1926 perhaps he or she appears in the class photo. Located south of Smithville near the Fayette County-Bastrop County line, the Ford’s Prairie School served the community from 1898 to 1939. Moving three times during that span of time, its last location was to the farm of Frank J. Kruppa in 1910. Frank Adamcik, F. J. Kruppa, and L. J. Lidiak, Sr. were trustees from 1910 to 1939. There was an average enrollment of 34 to 42 pupils. The one-room wooden building, heated by a wood stove, provided the children of the community with an education. After the school closed, the building was moved to Cistern, where it was used as a school for many years. The building still stands today. The photo, article, and the student identification is part of the vast number of photos in the two-volume Early
Czech Schools books published by Texas Czech Genealogical Society. This article was submitted by Donna Zimmerhanzel of SPJST Lodge 38, Kovar.
