The Corpus Christi Weekend Getaway will be August 8 to 10. Ray also mentioned that we need to be actively engaged in referring new members to SPJST. Youth Leader Joyce Nelson gave

This year’s Easter egg hunt will be on Saturday, April 19. March 16 was the District Two Spring Meeting at Cyclone, and she shared that none of the youth placed with their decorated eggs, but they took away some very good ideas for next year. Secretary/Treasurer Charles Wilson gave the February bar report. Delilah Wilson gave the ticket report for February. There was a nice turn-out for the Dujka Brothers and Barefoot Becky. President David Meyer gave the house report. He updated members on the rental bookings in February. Artie Monson and David Meyer gave the dance committee reports. local newspapers and radio stations. David reported that Steve Hamende and The Slackers, slated to play on April 5, cancelled due to band issues. Steve and The Slackers were scheduled into the April 5 slot recently after People’s Choice, the original holder for the date, cancelled as well. WeAreCountry contacted David about July dates, but July is already booked for the country and western dance. Evelyn Gustafson reported that she sent a sympathy card to Adeline Kohutek, who is in the nursing home. She also sent a sympathy card to Irene Helgren’s family. She sent a get well card
to Waldine Wieruscheske due to her recent fall. Irene Vrabel gave the auditing committee report. She reported that the committee has not met anymore, and that it is difficult to find times where all committee members are available. She asked President Meyer if he would request an audit from the Home Office. Irene also reported on the rules and regulations committee, which met on March 6. Ray Nelson was absent from the committee meeting, but the committee preceded with preliminary review and updates of the existing rules
and regulations. The committee will need to meet again. President David Meyer shared that he reviewed the questions the committee had about the existing document with Frank Horak, and that Frank would be unavailable to meet for the next tentatively scheduled committee meeting on March 25. The next meeting date for the committee was not finalized following the meeting. President David Meyer led into old business, most of which was later determined to be the trustee’s report. The point was made that Trustee Chairman F.L. Meyer needed to be giving the

trustee report per the duties of his position. President David Meyer reported that the trustees met with the cleaning crew, member Tommy Wright at the March trustee meeting, to discuss his contract, concerns, and add in a new term to the contract, which was not officially updated and signed at the trustee meeting on March 17. Rental clean up pay-out is $350, benefit rental pay-out is $200, and “spot cleanings” are $90. Spot cleanings would take place after most dances, unless there is a larger turnout than there has typically been in the past. The point was stressed that spot

cleanings are quick cleanings and do not encompass the entire hall, therefore there may be some areas of normal rental cleaning that are not carried out and that cannot be held against the cleaning crew. David also expressed the trustees’ growing concerns with the motorcycle club, which is being invited to the April trustee meeting to review the contract and discuss the concerns. Trustee Chairman F.L. Meyer reported that the trustees agreed to trim up the floors with 1 x 6s (and will be getting an estimate), patch holes, replace mirrors in the men’s restrooms, and paint the men’s restrooms with the paint that has already been purchased at True Value. The paint will need to be picked up and the restrooms painted. He also confirmed that there are termites in the youth room and youth closet, which shares a wall with the stage, and that Bug Masters will be providing services to remedy the situation. Old business was discussed. For Western Days, Fraternal Field Manager Hiram Dixon has agreed to come down and have a booth in the park to sell SPJST insurance, and he will bring his booth to the hall that night to continue to sell SPJST at the free dance. Fritz Hodde contacted Artie to know if Barefoot Becky would want to battle next year in February. With this kind of dance, both bands would play for two and one-half hours and split the sales 40/40. The dance would be from 2 to 7 p.m. with $10 tickets. F.L. Meyer suggested we set a ceiling for the ticket price that the two bands agree upon. Members discussed that $12 was a decent maximum price, but $15 would be too high, especially for many people who don’t stay long. Delilah Wilson brought up the fact that paying bands outright has never worked out well in the past, and that these bands would be heavily relying on their established crowds. Fritz Hodde usually draws a good crowd, and Barefoot Becky drew a fair crowd in February. On the same line of thought, Artie asked about advertisement for the dances. She said that Michael Craig with the Rockdale station offered us 12 spots for the price of six, and that she was unsure of prices for the Giddings newspaper and the La Grange radio station. Irene Vrabel shared that the Dancehall Boys on Sundays, a free public station, could most likely give free advertising. Members generated ideas to broaden the sources of local advertisement. Members suggested the following locations to provide dance cards: post

Lodge 23, Moravia Celebrates 100th Anniversary of Hall and Honors Albert Olsovsky and Eddie Vrana
Lodge 23, Moravia celebrated the 100th anniversary of the lodge hall and recognized Albert Olsovsky’s and Eddie Vrana’s service to Lodge 23 on Sunday, March 16, 2014. The quarterly meeting and celebration began at 2 p.m. Fellowship and a luncheon followed. President Elizabeth Holub presided over the meeting. Special guests were Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek and wife Joan, District Six Director Karen Kaspar, District Six Fraternal Field Manager Delisle Doherty, and Honorary District Six Director Michael Ahlstrom. Special presentations and plaques were presented in honor of past officers Albert Olsovsky and Eddie Vrana who were both thanked for their
many years of devoted service as officers to Lodge 23, Moravia and their service to SPJST. Albert and Eddie served as officers for more than 40 years.
Tradition Continues Albert took over from his dad. Now, Albert’s daughter Elizabeth Holub is serving as president after him. Eddie took over from his dad, and currently, Eddie’s niece Marilyn Palmquist is serving as treasurer after him. Lodge 23’s hall was built in January 1914. Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek presented a framed photo of the hall along with a message:
If Only These Walls Could Talk If only these walls could talk, what stories could they tell! For these walls are a diary of time; Having stood firm and weathered the elements — Coastal storms, spring showers and summer droughts . . .
The spirited debate, the friendly conversations and the familiar voices of family and friends long silenced. You may even hear yourself — for this wonderful lodge hall — this sentry of time — and the fraternal brotherhood that it represents is a part of you.
Lean in closer, brothers and sisters, and hear the echoes of your past:
The afternoon was spent visiting and reminiscing from through the years. —SPJST—
If only these walls could talk, lean in closely and you would hear Tales told in Czech — by our forefathers and mothers — of the joys, the sorrows and the challenges that they encountered and shared as a community of friends . . .
If only these walls could talk, they would tell us that time marches on: Their presence reminds us that the joy in living comes in knowing That each new day is a Blessing from God and a new day to serve.

for always bringing food for our food table. Thanks to Kathy Riley and Diane McDowell for decorating the lodge in green for St. Patrick’s Day. You did an excellent job. The lodge dances are always the third Friday night of every month. The address is 197 Hughes Road, and dances start at 7:30 p.m. and end at 10:30 p.m. The cost is $6 for members and $7 for guests. You get a lot of entertainment for a small amount of money. Where else can you go for $6 or $7 and eat and dance the night away! It is over early enough for everyone to get home before too late. Also, dancing is good exercise! Glenn Lenderman will be playing for the April dance. He always does an excellent job of singing and playing all of his instruments. The 50-50 drawing was won by Eileen Salyer, which was $86. The two free dance tickets to any dance but New Year’s Eve were won by Dane Lawder, and I am so sorry, but I cannot remember who won the other one. This is what happens when you get old! Congratulations to all of the winners. The lodge will be decorated for Easter for the April dance. The dance will be on Good Friday before Easter, but all of you who are in town or have friends or relatives visiting are urged to bring them with you to the dance. They will have a good time. There were a lot of dance students every Tuesday in March. Bernard and Kathryn Hylands did a very good job of teaching. Now they need to come to the dances to practice what they learned. He also gave a short talk about what SPJST is all about. Most people that come to the dances think SPJST is just a place to dance. It is . . . plus much more. SPJST membership is open to everyone. You become a member simply by purchasing an SPJST life insurance product. Through a wide range of life insurance and annuity plans, SPJST offers its members the peace of mind that comes with financial security. Lodge 246 Morgan’s Point ready to make a difference
Dear Members, Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point met on Monday, April 7, 2014, at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. Pizza, breadsticks and sauce, salad, and cookies were served for dinner. The meal was prepared by David and Melanie Zavodny Nauert. The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by President James L. Lee, III. The minutes from the March meeting were accepted as printed in the Vestnik. Treasurer Brandt Konkler presented balances for the lodge and youth accounts. He also announced new certificates and terminations.
Youth Leader Trish Konkler is planning a membership drive swimming party/lock-in for the summer. Fraternal Activities Coordinator Susan Hutton discussed the upcoming SPJST Car Show set for Saturday, May 3 at Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall. Lodge 246 will be joining hands at the event to assist with registration, parking and judging cars, and in whatever other areas where help is needed. Members then discussed feeding the community’s hungry and homeless again on the second Sunday of each month. We will begin in June. The lodge was one of the first groups to sign on when Feed My Sheep first organized in August 2012. We provided, prepared, and served a hot lunch and sack lunches until December 2013. We then took a much needed break from the project. Thanks to the groups who have been filling in for us. After
discussing the project at the past several meetings, we all believe that we are needed and do make a difference by serving the hungry/homeless each month. And, the project gives our lodge purpose by doing good for the community. We have witnessed many of the individuals who are down on their luck and need the warm meals and sack lunches to survive. Within a few months, we see many of them turn their lives around. The meals give them hope. We have received inquiries from members on how they can help with this project, and several members from different lodges have helped us in the past. It has been greatly appreciated. Volunteering at Feed My Sheep is an eye-opening, life-changing experience. If anyone is interested in helping serve the meals or is willing to prepare desserts or other dishes, please contact Lodge 246 member Melanie Zavodny (254) 534-0807 or email melaniez@vvm.com for more details. The meeting adjourned at 7 p.m. The next meeting will be held at the SPJST Car Show on Saturday, May 3. Fraternally, Ingrid Petrik, Secretary —SPJST—

Dallas Krouzek Meets; Votes to Disband
April 3, 2014 • Submitted by Carole Faraizl, Recording Secretary
LEFT PHOTO: The sign-in table for the Dallas Krouzek’s Thursday, April 3, 2014, meeting was very busy with members Mary Kubin, Dorothy Schroeder, and not seen behind Dorothy: Deanna Houpy, Lillian Maxcy, and Jerrie Becan, along with the other members all taking turns signing in and buying $2 bingo cards and tickets for the 50/50 split game, and
buying four for $1 surprise candy and money-filled plastic Easter eggs, as our fundraisers. CENTER PHOTO: The Egg-travaganza theme for the meeting included many Easter bunnies graciously provided by Jerrie Becan. RIGHT PHOTO: The members were asked to bring any dish made with eggs in keeping with the theme so we had a whole table full!
LEFT PHOTO: These lovely baskets—full of sandwiches cut in Easter shapes brought by Bessie Petr and Lynda Novak—were an example of the day’s foods. CENTER PHOTO: The desserts were also delicious dishes made with eggs. RIGHT PHOTO: Birthday Chairman Bessie Tydlaska read out the names of all the members who had birthdays in Jan-
uary, February, March, and April and member Sidney Bridewell, who celebrated her 96th birthday on February 27, won the honor of being the oldest member present, so she “took the cake,” that is, she won the birthday cake, and members sang the “Happy Birthday” song for all the members present that had birthdays in those months read.
LEFT PHOTO: Vice President Jerrie Becan and Parliamentarian Estelle Smith at the officers’ table. RIGHT PHOTO: After lengthy important discussions, the members present voted that the Dallas Krouzek disband. It has been looming for several years now, and the membership has been dwindling due to age and many members passing away, and younger members working and not able to attend; so, sad as it may be, it is time to disband. Many members have suggested the members meet as a social club, so all that it will take is for someone to call all the members with the date, place, and time, to keep its memory alive. Sometime later this year, the members plan to go on a bus trip to La Grange and donate all of the Dallas Krouzek records to the TCHCC Czech Research Library there, so the Krouzek heritage will be preserved.

I had fun at the District Four Spring Meeting. My egg came in first place in my age category. This was exciting, as this is the first time my Easter

Dear Bibbie, I shall talk about Easter tradition in our country. On Easter Monday, it keeps a tradition associated with a pomlázka, colored eggs, and a carol in Bohemia and in Moravia. Pomlázka is a twisted union of osiers decorated with color bands. It is a tool with what boys and men switch girls and women. At that, boys sing carols, e.g.: “Hody, hody doprovody, dejte vejce malovaný, nedáte-li malovaný, dejte aspoň bílý, slepička vám snese jiný…” Careful belabor girls and women through pomlázka symbolizes giving them youth, power, and health from young spring rods. Pomlázka twist: The most right are these osiers from a white willow. The spring of osiers, we prove by their twisting into the right angle and that

one, what cracks, is not right. We dive eight same thick osiers of one meter length and one weaker osier into cold water overnight, before twisting. Twisting: We take eight osiers into a hand by a thicker end, and we make a round union. We insert a thin osier between osiers of the union about 10 cm from a ranch (fig. a) and we twist a handle of pomlázka. The end of the little osier, we round between osiers up and we clip the end off (fig. b). We hold the handle by knees, we split all osiers on two deals i.e. 4 left (venture) and 4 right (hither) up, we twist afterwards fig. d) and e): We repeat the process alternately from a left (venture) and from a right (hither) side and we tauten it. The result is on the fig. f). On the weaker end, we tauten osiers with a string and decorate with any bands. Girls and women give to wellknown carolers dyed Easter eggs as a symbol of fidelity and fertility. They cook eggs with a whiteshell on hard and then stain natural or storebought food coloring. The natural color is a brown broth of an onion peel, a red color obtained from beets, a green color from spinach, and a blue color from a red cabbage. People are going to eat Easter eggs after Easter.
Mazanec loaf is baked for Easter from sweet yeast dough with raisins, almonds, and candied fruit. Easter Lamb cake is biscuit, rubbed or other sweet dough baked in the form of the Lamb, who (like Mazanec) is a part of the festive Easter hospitality in families. In grocery stores, you can buy chocolate Easter eggs, bunnies, and gingerbreads with Easter decorations. Easter eggs, i.e. ornaments decorated blown eggs

Early Czech Schools book now available
Seaton School was the last remaining rural school in Bell County, Texas. It closed at the end of the school year in May 1975, and the building has become a community center. One of the biggest events of the school year was the last day of school picnic to which each family brought wonderful food. One incident which was recalled in an article written by Rosa Schneider for The Temple-Bell Retired Teachers Association as a Bicentennial Project compiled between 1975 and 1976 was when a young student by the name of Rueben brought two delicious pecan pies his mother had made. Rueben was a first grader, and he had to walk a long way, and the two pies in the special container were difficult for a small boy to carry. When he arrived, he was red as a beet, and on closer look, it was apparent he had the measles. The article goes on to state, “We all felt very sorry for him because he knew that anyone with the measles was sent home right away, but he was very brave. We fixed up a big plate of all the goodies, and the principal took him home with his picnic dinner.” The photo and brief information is a portion of the 21 pages dedicated to Seaton School in the Early Czech Schools book published by the Texas Czech Genealogical Society. The twovolume set contains over 600 pages along with 2,900-plus surnames and covers more than 100 Czech schools around the state of Texas dating from
the 1800s through almost the mid1900s. The above photo and identifications is only one of several submitted by Jane Williams. Michael Holy, M.D. and Betty Lou Hejl Marek also submitted photos and information on the Seaton School. The soft-bound set is available for $55, plus $10 shipping/handling and can be purchased by sending your check made out to TCGS to Bill Hodon, 1201 Nimbus Dr., Pflugerville, Texas 78660. For more information, contact Bill by phone at (512) 251-5201 or by email at bdhodon@sbcglobal.net. —SPJST—
CHM series to focus on Czech religious heroes
The Czech Heritage Museum in Temple is partnering with SPJST throughout the spring and summer on the free informal “All Things Czech” lecture and discussion series. In April and May, “All Things Czech” profiles the lives of three religious heroes of the Czech lands. The April 24 presentation presented by the Czech Heritage Museum in Temple and SPJST will focus on “The Life and Times of Jan Hus.” Hus was a Czech priest, philosopher, and religious reformer burned at the stake for heresy against the doctrines of the Catholic Church. Dr. Mark Labaj of Temple will facilitate the presentation. Then, on May 22, “All Things Czech” journeys to ninth century Moravia and “The Life

and Times of Saints Cyril and Methodius.” Saints Cyril and Methodius were the principal Christian missionaries among the Slavic peoples and are credited with devising the first alphabet used to convey the Gospels in the Slavic language. Fr. Stephen Nesrsta, Pastor of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church of Corn Hill, and Father Paul Chovanec, Pastor of St. Justin Martyr Catholic Church of Houston, will present the program. “A hero is someone who people admire for their courage. They inspire us to be better people and work harder to achieve our own potential,” says SPJST Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek, host of the monthly “All Things Czech” informal lecture and discussion series. “Hus, Cyril, and Methodius were men of true faith who devoted themselves to the Lord and honored Him through their words and deeds.” Tried for heresy and burned to death in 1415, Jan Hus is a national hero in the Czech Republic. Hus lived and preached a century before Martin Luther. Both were college professors as well as priests. Both drew huge public crowds as they preached in their university chapels. Both condemned Church corruption and promoted a local religious autonomy. The Greek missionaries Saints Cyril and Methodius were the apostles of the Slavic peoples. Preaching Christianity in the native language, t h e y brought t h e Slavic countries firmly into the sphere of the Christ i a n Church. Sts. Cyril and Methodius For five years, they worked steadily to establish Christian worship according to the forms and language of the Moravian people. They inevitably clashed with the German missionaries, who were committed to the Latin form of Christianity. After Cyril’s death in 869, Methodius was appointed Bishop of the Slavic peoples, but the Germanic missionar-

Eventually, Methodius returned to Constantinople to complete a translation of the Bible that he and Cyril had begun together. Both the April 24 and May 22 programs will begin with a reception at the Czech Heritage Museum at 6 p.m. followed by the presentation at 7 p.m. next door at the SPJST Conference Room. The public is invited. Guest presenters will serve as co-hosts and will provide personal insight on discussion topics. The one-hour “Prague Spring Revisited” program that was presented as a part of the series on March 20 will be presented, upon request, for lodges and other interested organizations.
