hat a great day Saturday, April 12 was for not one - but two parades to promote SPJST! The members of the newly-organized Lodge 81, Needville Youth Club were filled with enthusiasm as they smiled and waved through the Needville Youth Fair Parade that morning riding the SPJST Float. We also enjoyed all of the “Bradley!” shouts from the crowd for Youth Leader Bradley Stavinoha. Best wishes to Lodge 81, Needville Youth Club. They are off to a great start. The afternoon parade was in Smithville for the Jamboree, and members of Lodge 38, Kovar welcomed the float with the same enthusiasm. The streets were lined with many people in the warm, beautiful sunshine. We then headed to Lodge 9, Snook for the annual fundraiser. What a great way to complete a very special SPJST day! The lodge served a delicious dinner, and the members’ hospitality was wonderful. Thanks for a great evening, Lodge 9!

When It Is All Said and Done, It’s About People By Delisle Doherty Districts Five and Six Fraternal Field Manager
As I sat at the banquet in January, I couldn’t help but notice how many lodges did not get an incentive award. As a Fraternal Field Manager, unfortunately, I hear more reasons why it isn’t happening than offers of solutions. For those who got incentives, this was not an accident or a lucky year for them. It was the realization, when it is all said and done, it is about people helping people, not agents, not lodges, not districts. There were no boundaries when it came to helping those in need. All everyone has to do is grasp on a simple understanding. Agents don’t work for just their lodge. All agents work for all the lodges. Lodges don’t refer people for their lodge; they help people in need. If there is a need, they know someone will take care of it. Some lodges earned a gold award this year yet they did not have any of the top agents. Some had double digit increases for the first time in years, even though they only have one agent active with the lodge. If they had a relative that had a need for insurance and they didn’t live near them, they contacted the Fraternal Field Manager. When everyone realizes it is not about the lodge or the district, it’s about people taking care of people, everyone grows. As a lodge don’t try to get a bigger piece of the pie; try to help build a bigger pie. There is a lot of need. It’s everyone’s job to help fulfill those needs. If there is a need, take care of it. We are all here to help each other. Many lodges have several orphan accounts. These are accounts where the agent is no longer around so they are not getting serviced. SPJST is working on assigning these accounts to existing agents to help you update and review your situation. If an agent calls you to offer a check-up or to sit and review your information, give them the courtesy of meeting with you. They will be the one to help you in the future
if the need arises. Give them the opportunity to meet with you and get to know the person who wants to serve you. Whether it is a simple conversation to let you know everything is good with your certificate or they need to help you change some information, welcome them into your home. With over a billion dollars in unclaimed life insurance in the USA alone, we don’t want you to be part of those statistics. There are many reasons for this, mostly life changes. People grow up, get married, get divorced, move, change addresses, change phone numbers, make a big purchase, have children, grandchildren, get a raise, or lose their job. Beneficiaries are forgotten and not updated. This is what the agents want to help you with. If your agent is no longer around, don’t wait for someone to call you. Contact your Fraternal Field Manager and let him get someone to service you. If you just got married, don’t wait for a tragic situation before you realize your needs have changed. Contact your agent or Fraternal Field Manager. If you moved or changed your phone number, SPJST can’t contact you if there is an problem. If any of these changes happened to you . . . don’t wait . . . call your agent or Fraternal Field Manager. That is what we are here for. If we work as a team, we can build a pie so big everyone can have as much as they want. When that happens, everyone celebrates. So next time an agent calls you to sit and talk, welcome them with open arms. And when you see someone who has a need for life insurance, tell them you can help and call the Fraternal Field Manager. Tear down the boundaries. When it is all said and done, it’s about people—not agents, not lodges, not districts. Let’s become a community of people helping people. —SPJST—

grows in the vacant part of the cemetery. SPJST Shiner Cemetery was established on April 14, 1906, by Lodge Texas Mir 10, Shiner. (1) In 1867, Henry B. Shiner came to Lavaca County and went into the cattle business. He drove cattle from Texas to Kansas and with the profits he made from the sale of his cattle, he acquired 8,000 acres of land. Shiner realized that the Czechs and Germans were hard working, dedicated farmers, so he induced them to settle in the area by selling them land for $7 and $8 an acre. In 1877, Henry B. Shiner donated land for a railroad right of way and a town site. The town was first called New Half Moon, but its name was changed to Shiner in 1888. (2) Texas-Czechs in the Shiner area joined the C.S.P.S. (Cesko-Slovanska Podporujici Spolecnost), a fraternal benefit society. They established Lodge Vitez 195, Shiner on January 31, 1894. (3) The Texas C.S.P.S. members had several issues with the national C.S.P.S. organization. Texas delegates who attended the national C.S.P.S. conventions in 1891 and 1896 attempted to get several reforms passed at these conventions, but they failed to get their reforms passed. As a result, the C.S.P.S. Main Lodge of Texas held a special meeting on December 28, 1896, in La Grange, Texas for the purpose of establishing a new fraternal benefit society. This was the start of SPJST. (4) Seven lodges withdrew from the national C.S.P.S. organization some time later to join the new SPJST. Lodge Vitez 195 probably was one of these lodges because it was one of the seven lodges that did not send a representative to the last convention held by the C.S.P.S. Grand Lodge in Texas. This
convention was held in La Grange, Texas, on June 19, 1897. (5) The next day all of the delegates to the last C.S.P.S. convention convened the First Convention of SPJST (Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas), a Czech fraternal benefit society. This convention was also held in La Grange, Texas. (6) Lodge Texasky Mir 10, Shiner was established a charter lodge of SPJST. (7) The Texas-Czechs who established this lodge were mostly from Moravia. The meetings of Lodge 10 were held in the Czech language until 1972. (8) Also, the financial secretary’s records were written in the Czech language. (9) Lodge 10 did not build a lodge hall. Some of their meetings were held at the lumber company, the fire station, and at the homes of the lodge presidents. (10) At the present time, SPJST Lodge 10 is not an active lodge.
Overview The SPJST Shiner Cemetery was established by Lodge Texasky Mir 10 in 1906 so it could provide a burial place for SPJST members and their families. Although this cemetery was known as the Shiner SPJST Cemetery, the entrance of the cemetery has a metal arch sign with the Czech words “Narodni Hrbitov” (National Cemetery). (11) A national cemetery was a burial place for people who were Czech. (12) SPJST Shiner Cemetery is still an active cemetery. At the present time, 237 known individuals are buried there. Czech names are found on the headstones, and 44 headstones are inscribed in the Czech language. All of the graves are oriented in a feet-to-east position. The first individual buried in the cemetery was Frank Welfl who passed away on October 29, 1908. The last person buried in the cemetery was Cecilia Tousek who passed away on May 20, 2011. Both Protestants and Catholics are buried in SPJST Shiner Cemetery. Obituaries indicate that

most of the Protestant funerals were conducted by Lutheran ministers. Some of the individuals buried in the cemetery were not members of any organized religion. Obituaries also indicate home funeral services were very common for individuals buried in SPJST Shiner Cemetery during the first half of the 20th century. Different people would volunteer to sit with the body. Sometimes the vigil would last for three days. If a person wasn’t embalmed, the funeral would be held the next day. (13) The last home funeral service took place in 1947. (14) Most of the home funeral services were conducted by Lutheran ministers or SPJST lay ministers. Local and out of area SPJST lay ministers conducted the funeral and burial services of several individuals buried in SPJST Shiner Cemetery. These SPJST services were conducted in the Czech language. Obituaries indicate that Tom Mikeska from Vlastenec, a small community near Shiner, officiated at several of the SPJST funeral and burial services. Some of the out of area SPJST lay ministers were Frank Svasta from Flatonia, Anton Smyka from Placedo, and Brother Sefcik and Stephen Valcik from Houston. In addition, officers of SPJST Supreme Lodge officiated at some of the funeral and burial services of individuals buried in SPJST Shiner Cemetery. John F. Chupick, SPJST Supreme Lodge Secretary, officiated at the funeral services of Joe Frank Mach in 1947 (15) and Charles Dolejsi in 1954. (16) Edward Marek, SPJST Supreme Lodge President, conducted the funeral services of John Podany in 1967 (17) and John J. Baros in 1975. (18) Last of all, Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris conducted the funeral services of Emilie Baros in 1977. (19) One individual buried in SPJST Shiner Cemetery had his funeral services conducted by SPJST and the

C.R.F.A. Lodge from Houston. This lodge brought a special speaker and a choir of select singers. (20) The first three initials of this lodge may have stood for the Czechoslovak Rationalist Federation which was located in Houston. There isn’t any known information about this lodge. None of the SPJST charter members of Lodge 10 are buried in the SPJST Shiner Cemetery, but several charter members of other SPJST lodges are buried in the cemetery. These include William Grossmann, Magdalena Grossmann, and Nikodem Kulhanek from Lodge Svojan 11, Praha. (21) Jakub and Marie Vackar were charter members of Lodge 19, Velehrad. (22) Lodge Svojan 11, Praha and Lodge 19, Velehrad were SPJST charter lodges. Other charter lodge members buried in the cemetery are Vincent and Agnes Pavlicek from Lodge 27, Pokrok Moultonu. (23) John and Marie Lukas were charter members of Lodge 45, Vlastenec Shiner. (24) Last of all, Josef W. Ripple, Rosalie Ripple, and Tom Welfel were charter members of Lodge 121, Spravedlnost (Lavaca County). (25) Not only was Jakub Vackar a charter member of Lodge 19, Velehrad, he was president of the Congregation of Freethinkers in Lavaca and Fayette Counties in 1888. (26) Also, he was the president of C.S.P.S. Lodge Radhost 114, Schulenburg in 1895. (27) Last of all, he was the president of the C.S.P.S. Main Lodge of Texas and convened the last C.S.P.S. convention held in Texas on June 19, 1897. (28) In addition, 11 members of Odbocka C.N.S. (Ceske Narodni Sdruzeni) of Shiner are buried in SPJST Shiner Cemetery. They are Joseph Benes, Charles Chrastecky, John Jurica, Charles Mikes, Charles Pavlicek, Vinc Pavlicek, John Podany, Charles Rosenfelder, Albert Turek, Marie Vackar, and her daughter Marie Vackar. National Alliance which was started after World War I to help raise funds for the new, struggling nation of Czechoslovakia. (29) Several veterans of the Armed Forces are buried in SPJST Shiner Cemetery. Frank Joseph Filip, Henry Grossmann, Henry Leck, Frank Pesek, Emil Spann, Raymond Vincek, and Tom Welfel served in World War I. Tom Welfel was the only veteran who died during World War I. (30) World War II veterans who have been identified are Frank Beithaupt, Charlie Victor Chrastecky, Jim Cmakal, Frank Dolejsi, Oscar Lee Filip, Henry Grossmann, Bernard J. Hass, Edward Janota, Henry Lamza, WACS CPL Helen Lieskovsky, Mark Parma, Herbert W. Neubauer, Milton Frank Pesek, Edwin R. Pesek. Otto Picha, William Sovadina, Jimmy A. Trousek, Jim Vaclavik, Robert Veit, Adolph Vincek, Harold William Vogt, Frank Welfel, and Joe E. Wentrcek. The only World War II veteran who died in combat was Frank Dolejsi. (31) Harold W. Vogt was the only veteran who served in both World War II and the Korean War. The other veterans of the Korean War are Alfred Joe Benes, Robert A. Pesek, Edwin Vancura, and George Joe Vancura. Several changes have occurred in the SPJST Shiner Cemetery. The entrance of the cemetery had a metal arch sign with the Czech words, “Narodni Hrbitov” (National Cemetery). After negative comments were made about the sign in the community, the sign was quietly removed before the year of 1970. (32) SPJST Shiner Cemetery once had a large dug well. This well had a wooden wall around it and had a wooden cover. Its water bucket hung from a wooden arch above the well. Local lodge members became concerned that an accident might occur at the well, so they had the well covered up before the year of 1970. (33) There was also a tool shed near the

Czech-Texans and members of the Lodge Texasky Mir No. 10, Shiner established this cemetery on April 14, 1906, to provide a burial place for SPJST (Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas) members and their families. Local and regional SPJST ministers provided funeral and burial services to its members in the Czech language. The SPJST Shiner Cemetery contains over 200 burials, many of them Catholic and Protestant. Czech names are found on the headstones and over forty are inscribed in the Czech language. Gravestone materials include granite, marble and funeral company markers. Prior to 1970, a metal arch sign marked the entrance of the cemetery with the Czech words, “Narodni Hrbitov” (National Cemetery).
All of the graves are oriented in an feet-to-east position, a tradition in the Czech culture. None of the SPJST Charter Members are buried here, but several Charter Members from SPJST lodges outside of Shiner are buried in the cemetery. This includes Jakub Vackar, a Charter Member of Lodge No. 19, Velehrad, president of the congregation of Freethinkers in Lavaca and Fayette Counties and President of other lodges in the area. Some members of the Odbocka C.N.S. of Shiner, a branch of the Czech National Association that helped raise funds for the new, struggling nation of Czechoslovakia, are also buried in the SPJST Shiner Cemetery. In addition, many veterans of World War I, World War II, and the Korean War are buried here. The cemetery is a reminder of the strong fraternal bonds of the Czech community. The SPJST District VI Cemetery Organization, established in 2002, maintains this historic cemetery. Historic Texas Cemetery – 2011

The tool shed was also removed before the year of 1970. (34) In 1972, Ben Svoboda was elected president of Lodge 10 and his wife, Alice Svoboda, was elected financial secretary of the lodge. The Svobodas had moved back to Shiner in 1970. The previous officers had served Lodge 10 for 30 years. The Svobodas started an annual clean-up day which was held before November 1 of each year until there was a lack of participation. The lodge hired someone to mow the cemetery. Later when the Svobodas

(35) In 1992, Ben Svoboda became ill so Gladys Veit, Alice Svoboda’s sister, became the president of Lodge 10 and her husband Robert Veit was elected vice president of the lodge. Gladys Veit and her husband mowed the part of the cemetery with graves and the cemetery road, but hired someone else to mow the vacant part of the cemetery. In 2001, Robert Veit became ill and the Veits could no longer mow the cemetery. So Gladys Veit contacted SPJST District Six Director Michael Ahlstrom and asked for his help with the mainte-
nance of SPJST Shiner Cemetery. (36) As a result, SPJST District Six Cemetery Organization was established in 2002. The SPJST Shiner Cemetery officially became part of the SPJST District Six Cemetery Organization on June 27, 2002. (37) Now the SPJST District Six Cemetery Organization is responsible for the maintenance of the SPJST Shiner Cemetery. In addition, individuals of any race or nationality can purchase a lot and be buried in SPJST Shiner Cemetery.

Ladies and gentlemen, honored guests, good morning. It is my honor to be here today for the dedication of the Texas Historic Cemetery Marker for the SPJST Shiner Cemetery as well as to pay tribute to those fraternal brothers and sisters who came before us. First things first: Thanks to the SPJST District Six Cemetery Organization for the crucial personal support that they have given to the maintenance of the SPJST Shiner Cemetery and to Janie and David Bucek for their exten-
He was the great-grandfather of Mary Ann Leck. Later, the Welfl name was changed to Welfel. Ronnie plans to be buried in Shiner Cemetery. PHOTO 3: Laverne and August Madala. PHOTO 4: Vlasta and Craig Cerny. RIGHT PHOTO: Kathy and Michael Ahlstrom.
sive research as well as Alice Svoboda and Gladys Veit for their support in securing the Texas State Historical Marker. The SPJST Shiner cemetery and many of those interred represent an important and defining segment of the history of our great fraternal benefit society and of the Shiner community. Between 1834 and 1900, approximately 200,000 people of Czech descent immigrated from their native lands to America. A good many of those ended up in Texas — and for that matter — right here in Lavaca County. Achieving success in this new land of promise was a challenge; however, it was possible — as long as a body was willing to learn the language, work hard, and apply some good business sense to the mix. To make life more enjoyable, the Czech immigrants and their families stuck together. It was during this time that organizations like SPJST were established. In their communities and in their local lodges, our early members continued to interact in the ways of the old country and talk in their native tongue. It should come as no surprise, then, that all of the SPJST’s early proceedings and rituals were written or conducted in the Czech language. Through participation in lodge meetings, events and SPJST conventions, members learned and applied the democratic principles of their newly adopted homeland. They grew to appreciate the value of free speech and to express their opinions. Moreover, they learned how to conduct meetings and the importance of voting. Having learned and adopted the democratic values, SPJST members became better citizens. The more than 200 men and women who are buried here — be they blood kin or not — are a part of us because they are a part of our history — and of
our present! In learning their names — and the stories of their dutiful lives — we establish a common bond with them. With that bond comes pride, respect, and appreciation . . . And, what one appreciates, one will take care of . . . It was one of our nation’s great founding fathers — Benjamin Franklin — who said, “Show me your cemeteries and I will tell you what kind of people you have.” I look around me on this beautiful March morning — this ninth and glorious day of Spring — and I see a wellgroomed cemetery that reflects the devotion, the planning and the physical labor of a community of friends that has pride and respect for its heritage and extends that appreciation to this cemetery. It is an open air museum of the SPJST and of the Shiner community’s founding fathers and mothers. Look out and see how many of the headstones are marked by the stars and stripes waving in the brisk morning air! Those flags are a proud reminder that so many of our own have served proudly and with distinction in our nation’s armed forces. Even in their passing, we salute their service! The dedication of the Texas State Historical Marker is an important event as evidenced by your attendance here today . . . First, it is important to families and friends: To immediate descendents, the Shiner Cemetery is a place of focus where they can talk and establish a connection with ancestors who preceeded them . . . Second, it is important to community: To family researchers and genealogists, the Shiner Cemetery provides a wealth of information relating to the origin of the community and its founders . . .

And finally, it is important to SPJST. The dedicated and ongoing efforts of the SPJST District Six Cemetery Organization and the dedication of the Texas State Historical Marker are ultimately a testament to the staying power of a good idea. And that good idea is fraternalism! Because the SPJST Shiner Cemetery is the final resting place for many of our fraternal brothers and sisters, I am compelled to share with you a reading from our fraternal order’s ancient ritual book. It is a passage that would have been shared by an SPJST official at a member’s funeral . . . I share it now — with respect and in loving memory — of the souls of those interred here who have gone before us . . . My beloved brothers, sisters and friends you know not the day nor the hour when you may be called and death may stare you face to face. You have not the slightest assurance that you can live until tomorrow. Indeed, in a short moment your eyes may be blinded, your hearing may be lost, your heart may stop beating forever, the importance of death can be appreciated only when we realize that we, too, will die
and our death will also some day be the topic of a funeral address. Man, the Master of all living creatures on earth, may be stricken down at a time when he may least expect it. His influence, greatness, honor, glory, his whole intellect, with power and riches avail him nothing when death finally strikes him down. His remains will then be placed on the same common level with all the other living creatures. He, as a giant oak of the world, must die the same as the smallest of living creatures which is often tramped to death by the foot of man. Having this in mind and knowing that life vanishes away like a dream, we should be governed by this great lesson and wherever duty summons us, yea, when even an occasion presents itself, we should ever serve and do good and should evidence our love to our fellow men, by reason of the principles and tenets, by which we have banded ourselves together as members of the Slavonic Benevolent Order. May honor be given to the memory of our departed brothers and sisters now and forever. —SPJST—

Lodge 32, Victoria readies for Join Hands Day
I hope all of you had a very happy and blessed Easter spent with family and friends! We survived the garage sale - yay! Thanks so much to everyone who helped by bringing items, pricing items, selling and buying items, and finally, boxing up the items that didn’t sell and taking them to Mid-Coast Family Services. Whew . . . what a lot of time and work went into this sale! But when it was all over, we realized we got much more out of it than the cash we took in. A lot of fraternal time—being together for that many hours, you find out things you never thought of asking—just by listening and observing. Getting to know each
other better and learning about the talent some of our members have is time well spent! And, of course, those great burgers from Dairy Treet hit the spot! If you weren’t available this time, don’t worry . . . we’ll do it again in the fall :-)
“It’s A Small World!” Our April meeting was actually on Alfred Horelka’s birthday so his sweet wife brought a Boston Cream cake and cream cheese cupcakes. Thanks for the goodies, Evelyn, and Happy Birthday to Alfred!
We sang “Happy Birthday” to him and then celebrated the 50th birthday of “It’s A Small World” - my favorite Disney song was introduced at the New York City’s World’s Fair on April 10, 1964. Two years later, the song accompanied the ride by the same name and is still one of the most popular rides for all ages at all the Disney Parks. It truly is a small world! I told them it was either sing “It’s A Small World” or do the Bunny Hop! No one would lead the hop so we sang - not sure that was the best choice or not. But one thing is for sure, I feel

Nearly a year after their nursing home was destroyed by the West Fertilizer Plant explosion, staff of West Rest Haven nursing home held a groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, April 4, 2014, to begin the rebuilding process. The new 75,000-square foot, 120-bed nursing facility will be built across North Davis Street from the old nursing home. “It’s a great day for West Rest Haven. We get to start fresh,” said West Rest Haven Board President Robert Payne, adding “Our community is a very strong faith-based community which is so important for a small town. Everybody rallies around each other, helps each other get through, picks up when you get down.” In conjunction with ground-breaking ceremonies, a check in the amount of $11,100 was presented by SPJST officials and payable through the West
Benevolence Fund for the construction of the SPJST Gazebo which will be located on the grounds of the property. Two stained glass windows in the nursing home chapel are also being funded. West Benevolence Fund was established by SPJST following the April 17, 2013, explosion. The West Benevolence Fund Advisory Committee, consisting of presidents of the four West-area SPJST lodges have been responsible for evaluating worthy efforts in the community and subsequent funding. Lodge 47, Seaton honors longtime members
Dear Vestnik Readers, On Sunday, April 6, 2014 following a nice, early morning shower in East Bell County, Lodge 47, Seaton members and guests met for the monthly lodge meeting at 2 p.m. The lodge was blessed in having a fantastic group of 52 members and guests in attendance. We thank each of you who attended and hope you will join us again. President Edwin Pechal called the meeting to order. Youth members Justin Kraatz and Jamie Bostick presented the flags and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Following the flag presentation, President Pechal turned the program over to District Two Director Jesse Pospisil who in turn honored and spoke to the members of Lodge 47 who have had membership with our lodge for 50 and 75 years. As each name was called, the honoree was escorted to the front to be seated at a beautifully decorated Easter-themed table. In the center of the table was a cake made and decorated by Judy Pechal in their honor. Being recognized and receiving 75- year pins were Edward Joe Coufal, Alvin James Hejl, and Janet Mikulas Odstrcil. Also recognized, but unable to attend, was Emma Mucha. (An article on Emma appeared in last week’s Vestnik) Fifty-year members present and recognized were Jerry Wayne Haisler, Edward Frank Hejl, Johnny F. Herring, Allen W. Hoelscher, Rodney G. Marek, and Dianne M. Psencik. Each of these members received their 50-year pins. Director Pospisil shared some interesting facts of 1939 and 1964 back when these fine folks first became members of SPJST Lodge 47. Did you know that in 1939, gas was 10 cents a gallon and went up to 30 cents in 1964 compared to the $2.39 plus that we pay today? Those of you who were unable to attend will be receiving your 50-year pins soon: Linda Kay Cox, Ray A. Dubcak, Rose Marie Everett, Angela Joyce Griggs, Bradley Frank Hejl, Kevin K. Kelarek, Gary James Kotrla, Daniel R. Kuban, Michael D. Kuban, Leo J. Makovy, J. Roger Malcik, Russel W. Malcik, Betty Jane Mikulas, Kathaleen L. Odstrcil, Katherine Ann Pechal, Rebecca M. Quinn, and Willie Mae Kuban Rose. Becky and Elden Zavodny were recognized as the recipient of the 2013 Lodge 47 Lifetime Achiever Award. This award is given to a member(s)
who dedicate their time to the lodge in numerous ways. Becky serves as the lodge treasurer. Both she and Elden help in all lodge activities throughout the year. Thank you, Becky and Elden, and congratulations for an award you well deserve. President Pechal also awarded a plaque to honor three gentlemen who are not Lodge 47 members but are very well known for their time spent at Star Hall. Tom Williams, Steve Lynch, and Ken Bartz spend countless hours helping in various ways at the lodge. Every time there is a function such as the lodge picnic, barbecue cookoff, annual fundraiser, Christmas party, etc., these guys are there loading wood, cooking, loading tables and chairs, cleaning, and many other jobs behind the scenes. If they see anything to be done, even stepping up to help unload or carry a box, they are there. Lodge 47 thanks you, Tom, Steve, and Ken, for all you
do for our lodge. We have definitely “adopted” you for the true fraternalism you are recognized for. Thank you, Director Pospisil, for the nice plaques you made for these guys. What a nice time to recognize so many well-deserving people today. Welcomed also were the many guests who joined us on such a special day. To each of you in attendance, whether a regular attendee of our meeting or a guest, we thank you for presence. It was then back to regular business. Roll call showed all officers and active sales agents present. Board members absent were Tammy Pechal and Lynette Talasek. Lynette was attending another district meeting. A motion was made and carried to count her present for today’s meeting. Members on the sick list are Madelyn Thompson and Tracy Klusacek. Please keep these ladies in your prayers.

History of Krouzek Ceskych Zen Submitted by Evelyn Cechan, Reporter
The Krouzek began when a group of Czech women met at Anna Sill’s house to drhat peri (pluck goose feathers) to make perinky pillows periny (feather comforters) and quilts. Some of the ladies were subscribing to a Czech newspaper called HLAS ATEL published in Chicago. After reading about groups of Czech women who had organized Krouzek in their community, the ladies decided to organize a Krouzek in Dallas. Their purpose was to help needy families, visit the sick, and support charitable organizations. The Krouzek Ceskych Zen (Circle of Czech Women) was organized on March 28, 1935, at Sokol Hall, 3700 Carl Street, Dallas, Texas. The 14 charter members were Adolphine (Dolfi) Stransky, president, Bessie Valcik, Marie Rezek, Marie Kraft, Mary Vancura, Mary Toberney, Agnes Hemzel, Albi Koze, Marie Filipec, Frances Roetrekl, Marie Stransky, Rose Bouska, Helen Harris, and Rose Spanel. According to the by-laws, no officers were elected that day. Meetings were held once a month on Thursday from 1 until 4 p.m., and dues were 10 cents a month. After the meeting, kolaches and coffee were served, and members played bingo for a penny a game. Sister Stransky closed her meeting with “Mejte se vzdcky radi”—
Always love one another. During World War II, many of the Sisters did volunteer work. The Red Cross brought sewing machines to Sokol, and the sisters sewed bandages for the armed services. Meetings were held at Sokol on Carl Street until the building was sold. On October 1, 1959, the Krouzek began meeting in its present home at Sokol Hall, 7448 Greenville Avenue in Dallas, Texas. All meetings were in Czech until 1981. The meetings were held the first Thursday of each month except January and July. Business is conducted, members sing “Happy Birthday” to each sister having a birthday that month, and draw for small gifts (do vyhry) that each Sister donates. Twenty cents tickets are purchased for the drawing by Sisters as a fundraiser, and a covered dish luncheon is shared with husbands and guests. At one time, the Krouzek had around 100 members. Several of the Sisters have been members for more than 40 years. The Krouzek continued to be an active organization made up of longtime friends and newcomers all of whom enjoyed the common bond of their heritage. —SPJST—

2013 - 2014 Youth Club Member Update - Merit Points and Meeting Attendance
Third Quarter Merit Points and Meeting Attendance The totals below in the column labeled “Pts” are merit points earned in the June 2013 to February 2014 youth year. This is total merit points for the 2013-2014 youth year thusfar. Please see “What is the Merit Point System?” for complete information about the contest. The number in the column labeled “Mtgs” is the number of meetings each youth club member has attended from June 2013 to February 2014 youth year. Please see “What is an Active Youth Member?” below to determine number of meetings needed to participate in youth activities.
What is the Merit Point System? Youth club members earn merit points for participating in SPJST lodge, district and state activities. At the end of the youth year, points are totaled and the youth with the highest points in the youth club receive cash awards.
Contest Dates June 1, 2013 to May 31, 2014
Merit Point Contest Age Divisions Junior—Entering Kindergarten to Age 12 Teen—Age 13 to High School Senior
Rules The youth leader or assistant youth leader is responsible for keeping track of the merit points for each active member of the youth club. The points are to be sent to the State Youth Director on the Quarterly and Merit Point Reports each quarter. Youth club members are also encouraged to keep up with their points and turn them in to the youth leader on a quarterly basis. This system helps both the youth leader and the youth member keep better records of youth participation. Current, official Quarterly and Merit Point Reports, available from the State Youth Director may only be used in the Merit Point Contest. The Quarterly and Merit Point Reports sent to the State Youth Director by the youth leader will be kept on file for at least six months following the conclusion of the contest. Merit points are earned for only those activities listed under Youth Point Values. An activity can only earn points in one category on the point sheet. When in doubt about any activity earning points, contact the State Youth Director prior to the contest conclusion. Everyone will be subject to the same rules in every contest. Failure to comply with any rule shall mean immediate withdrawal.
Merit Point Awards First through fifth place awards are presented in the junior and teen divisions of each youth club. The amount of points that top winners receive in both divisions will determine where the point rankings of the first through fifth winning categories begin. First place winners will be those equal to and 20 points below the top place winner in their age division. Second Place will be 21 to 40 points below the top winner in their age division. Third place will be 41 to 60 points below the top winner in their age division. Fourth place will be 61 to 80 points below the top winner in their age division. Fifth place will be 81 to 100 points below the top winner in their age division. Awards are presented on the lodge, district, and state levels in the junior and teen merit point contests. At each District YAD, the Home Office presents first through fifth place awards to qualifying junior and teen youth club members. The junior and teen with the most points in each district also receive recognition. In the event of a tie, all who tied for first place will receive the award.* Junior and Teen Point Awards First Place $30 Second Place - $25 Third Place - $20 Fourth Place - $15 Fifth Place $10
What is an Active Youth Member? A youngster with a current SPJST insurance certificate may enter the youth program the youth year that he/she will be entering kindergarten. To be considered active, youth club member must attend a majority (seven) of the monthly meetings during the year. The youth must attend the majority of these meetings at his/her home youth club. In those instances where a lodge does not have a youth club, the youngster may attend adult lodge meetings or the meetings of another youth club. The youngster will be eligible for camp and Youth Achievement Day (YAD) after the completion of his/her kindergarten year. Active youth members must be single and not be pregnant or a parent. The age of the youth on June 1 of the current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.). The youth year begins June 1 and ends May 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school.

Online youth club meeting set for May 5
Attention youth club members and others interested in learning more about the SPJST’s great youth program. Make plans to meet — online or by telephone — Monday, May 5 at 7 p.m. for the SPJST Youth Department’s online youth club meeting. This online meeting represents an effort by the Youth Department to use technology to bring young people together. Online conference will introduce young people to the SPJST Youth Program, especially those members belonging to lodges without youth clubs or living in areas not presently accessible to a youth club. Conducting meetings while miles apart is easy with online conferencing. Youth club members currently belonging to an active youth club will also be able to join in these meetings and may receive credit for attending up to two teleconference or online meetings. This may be crucial for those youth club members seeking to qualify for their district youth achievement days or camp. To join in this youth club online conference meeting, May 5 at 7 p.m. CDT. go to https://www3.gotomeeting.com/join/125-793-646. You may want to also use your microphone and speakers (VoIP) during the conference - a headset is recommended. You can also join in by calling in using your telephone. Dial+1 (626) 521-0014 Access Code: 125-793-646. The meeting ID is 125-793-646. The agenda for the May 5 online meeting will focus on making preparations for upcoming events this spring.
The meeting is expected to last approximately 15 minutes. —SPJST—

District Three encourages youth to enter kraslice contest
Dear District Three Youth, Don’t forget our district spring youth meeting on Sunday, April 27, 2014, at Lodge 25, Ennis. We will be having our kraslice contest again this year, and I need you to read the rules about this contest in your youth club handbook before creating your beautiful design. Remember, it is a painted or colored pattern egg and not a fictional character egg. Also, if your parents are planning to be a chaperone at camp this year, please remind them that after the spring meeting, State Youth Director Lynette Talasek will be conducting their class. We have a lot of important dates for you to remember. Bring your calendars so you can save these dates. I am really looking forward to seeing everyone at the meeting so you can help me schedule all of our fun summer activities. I cannot wait! The Garden of Promise
There is a place, I have been told, beyond an open gate. All have been invited where friends and family meet. It holds eternal promise of everlasting peace. No pain or sorrow ever comes and teardrops there have ceased. Abundant life is evident. Constant, fresh, and new. A garden of provision with eternity in view.
The promise is awaiting a place we can abide. Fulfilled for all who answer the call to come inside.

Special Memoires of My Great Aunt Elsie Roznovsky
Submitted by Christiana Gentry of Lodge 88, Houston
Aunt Elsie was the fourth child of Barbora Kuglova and Vojtech Sebek who immigrated to the United States at the turn of the 20th century. They were both Bohemians. Barbora came from Domazlice, and Vojtech came from Kladno. At the time of Elsie’s birth in 1920, her father was a baker in Caldwell,Texas. Elsie always had fond memories of her father baking rohliky, kolace, and buchty. By 1923, the Sebek family moved to the Cy-Fair area of Houston where they ultimately settled on their farm. Elsie had four brothers, Frank, Jerry, George, and Albert. She had one sister, Rosie Sebek Mrosko. Rosie was my grandmother. She and Elsie were close sisters. When they started school, they could hardly speak English. At home, only Czech was spoken. Once she made her way to Houston, Elsie frequented SPJST Lodge Stefanik, No. 142, Houston in Cottage Grove; Sokol Houston; and the old Pokrok lodge off North Main. She and all of the family held tight to their Czech heritage. I grew up hearing many family stories from Elsie, because I lost my grandmother Rosie when I was five years old. Elsie was always fun to be around. Whenever I visited her at her home in Spring Branch, she always made sure I was well fed and she always had dessert waiting for us. When I was the appropriate age, she made sure I had a pivo or a glass of vino in hand. She was always the life of the party! Elsie would tell stories of having to milk cows before and after school when she was young. The family was able to be self-sustaining during the Great Depression. They had hogs to butcher, cows to milk, chickens for eggs, and a vegetable garden. Elsie’s mom would often bake a
duck for Sunday dinner. To this day, we have the crock that they used to make their own sauerkraut. Her dad used to tell the children about Slivovice (Czech Plum Brandy) and how it would knock their hats off! Elsie’s first job outside of the farm was at a Weingarten Store on Washington Avenue in Houston. She became a manager of the candy department. We all have visions of Elsie working the department as Lucille Ball would work the candy factory on her television show! Some in the family nicknamed her, “Lucy” because of her similar beauty and personality. Elsie had that fun sense of humor that we all loved. I have had a special bond with Elsie over the years. I have always admired her strength as she managed to get through tough times. Her husband, Louis Roznovsky, passed away the very same night as my grandmother Rosie. Their funerals occurred one after the other on the same day. We believe that strong, hard-working Czech upbringing sustained Elsie over the past 17 years. Elsie would speak much about the Czech heritage. She made sure I knew where my family came from. I remember special moments of her teaching me how to pronounce Czech words. Not knowing the meaning of the words, I would read her letters from family in the Czech Republic. She would translate. Always excited and proud, she would come to watch me sing with Kovanda’s Czech Band. I feel so privileged to have had those fond moments with her. I know we will share even more stories in the life to come. Eliska, to není sbohem, ale nashledanou . . . Elsie, this is not goodbye, but see you later . . . —SPJST—

Czech Heritage Museum series to focus on religious heroes in April, May
The Czech Heritage Museum in Temple is partnering with SPJST throughout the spring and summer on the free informal “All Things Czech” lecture and discussion series. In April and May, “All Things Czech” profiles the lives of three religious heroes of the Czech lands. The April 24 event presented by the Czech Heritage Museum in Temple and SPJST will focus on “The Life and Times of Jan Hus.” Hus was a Czech priest, philosopher, and religious reformer burned at the stake for heresy against the doctrines of the Catholic Church. Dr. Mark Labaj of Temple will facilitate the presentation. Then, on May 22, “All Things Czech” journeys to ninth century Moravia and “The Life and Times of Saints Cyril and Methodius.” Saints Cyril and Methodius were the principal Christian missionaries among the Slavic peoples and are credited with devising the first alphabet used to convey the Gospels in the Slavic language. Fr. Stephen Nesrsta, pastor of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church of Corn Hill, and Father Paul Chovanec, pastor of St. Justin Martyr Catholic Church of Houston, will present the program. “A hero is someone who people admire for their courage. They inspire us to be better people and work harder to achieve our own potential,” says SPJST Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek, host of the monthly “All Things Czech” informal lecture and discussion series. “Hus, Cyril, and Methodius were men of true faith who devoted themselves to the Lord and honored Him through their words and deeds.” Tried for heresy and burned to death in 1415, Jan Hus is a national hero in the Czech Republic. steadily to establish Christian worship according to the forms and language of the Moravian people. They inevitably clashed with the German missionaries, who were committed to the Latin form of Christianity. After Cyril’s death in 869, Methodius was appointed Bishop of the Slavic peoples, but the Germanic missionaries, who from the very beginning opposed Slavic missionaries in Moravia, seized Methodius on his return from Rome, and kept him in prison for almost three years. Eventually, Methodius returned to Constantinople to complete a translation of the Bible that he and Cyril had begun together.
Both the April 24 and May 22 programs will begin with a reception at the Czech Heritage Museum at 6 p.m. followed by the presentation at 7 p.m. next door at the SPJST Conference Room. The public is cordially invited. Guest presenters will serve as co-hosts and will provide personal insight on discussion topics.
